I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with my whole heart.
24:2
What is the meaning of 'With my whole'? With all eagerness, with strained effort, freed from the cares of life, and become lifted up on high, having released the soul from the bonds of the body.
24:3
Not simply in words, nor with tongue and mouth alone, but also with the understanding.
24:4
So too Moses said when he gave the law:
24:5
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your mind.
24:6
For here he seems to me to call the confession a thanksgiving.
24:7
I will sing praise, he says, I will give thanks.
24:8
他一生都用在這事上,以此為起首的引言,也以此作為結束;
He spent his whole life upon this, and from this he takes his opening, and in this he ends;
24:9
and this was his continual work: to offer up thanksgiving both for the benefits done to himself, and for those done to others.
24:10
因為神所要求的,沒有一樣像這事這般迫切;
For God requires nothing so much as this;
24:11
this is a sacrifice, this is an offering, this is the mark of a grateful soul, this is a blow against the devil.
24:12
正因如此,那有福的約伯得了冠冕,被高聲頌揚;因為儘管千萬試煉臨到他身上,他的妻子又設法絆倒他,他卻沒有被傾覆,反倒始終為著萬事向主感恩——不單在他富足的時候,就是在他成為貧窮的時候,也是如此;
From this the blessed Job was crowned and proclaimed victor: that though ten thousand trials were brought upon him, and though his wife tried to trip him up, he was not overthrown, but continued giving thanks to the Master for all things—not only when he was rich, but even when he became poor;
24:13
不單在他身體健康的時候,就是在他肉體受擊打的時候,也是如此;
not only when he was in health, but even when he was smitten in his flesh;
24:14
not only when his affairs flowed on with the current, but even when that grievous storm burst upon his whole household, and upon the very nature of his body.
24:15
因為這正是感恩之心最要緊的記號:在患難與逆境之中,仍向神深深地知恩感謝,並且始終不住地感恩;
For this above all is the mark of a thankful disposition: in afflictions and adversities to acknowledge great gratitude toward God, and to continue giving thanks without ceasing;
24:16
which very thing he too, hinting at it, made plain through what follows.
24:17
因為許多人在心情愉快之時尚且感恩,一旦遭遇相反的境遇便心生怨懟;
For since many of mankind, while they are in good cheer, give thanks, but when they suffer the contrary, are discontented;
24:18
甚至有些人還挑剔所發生的事;
and there are also those who find fault with the things that happen;
24:19
showing that this comes about not because of the nature of the things that befall us, but because of a perverse disposition, he went on to say:
24:20
"In the counsel of the upright and in the congregation, great are the works of the Lord."
24:21
This he said to show that there is need of an incorruptible judge and of an uncorrupted assembly, and then the works of God will be manifest—that they are great, that they are full of much wonder.
24:22
For they are indeed great in themselves, yet they are not shown to be great unless one has an upright judge.
24:23
Since the sun also is in itself bright and radiant, and shines upon the whole inhabited world; yet to those who are diseased in their eyes it is not such.
24:24
But the fault is not the sun's; rather it is the defect of their weakness.
24:25
Whenever, therefore, you see someone accusing the works of God, do not slander the works because of that man's malice, but take from God's providence the strongest proof of that man's folly.
24:26
因為那稱太陽為黑暗的人,並沒有毀損那光體,反倒為自己的失明提供了確鑿的證據;
For just as the man who calls the sun dark did not slander the star, but brought forth an exact proof of his own blindness;
24:27
那稱蜂蜜為苦的人,並沒有遮蔽蜂蜜的甘甜,反倒確立了對他自己病症的控訴之判決;
and the man who names honey bitter did not obscure its sweetness, but established the verdict of accusation against his own disease;
24:28
so too is the man who finds fault with the works of God.
24:29
正如這樣的人絲毫無損於那些事物,也無損於人對它們的看法,反倒對自己的愚昧發出最大的控告;
And just as such a man does no harm to those things, nor to men's opinion of them, but brings forth the greatest accusation against his own folly;
24:30
照樣,論到神的作為,那些沒有正確判斷的人,甚至連已成就的奇事也認不出來;
so too, concerning the works of God, those who do not have right judgment do not so much as know the wonders that have been wrought;
24:31
whereas if anyone should have a soul unbribed and not perverse, he will be amazed at every one even of the things that seem to be difficult.
24:32
For what, tell me, among the things that happen is not wonderful? And if you will, passing over all the rest, let us come to the things that seem to most people burdensome and grievous—death, disease, poverty, and all such things.
24:33
For if anyone should have an upright heart, he will heartily accept and marvel even at these.
24:34
For even though death entered through sin, yet so great is God's abundance, and His love toward mankind, and the exceeding measure of His care, that He has used even this for the benefit of our race.
24:35
For what, tell me, is there grievous in death? Is it not a release from labors? Is it not a loosing from cares? Do you not hear Job commending it, and saying:
24:36
「死亡對於道路被隱藏的人,乃是安息。」它豈不是惡的斬斷嗎?因為人若是惡的,他一死,他惡行的作為便被斬斷了;
"Death is rest to a man whose way is hidden." Is it not a cutting off of wickedness? For if anyone be wicked, the works of his wickedness are cut off when he dies;
24:37
因為「已死的人是脫離了罪而稱義了」——就是說,他不再加添罪惡了;
for "he who has died has been justified from sin"—that is to say, he no longer adds sin to sin;
24:38
and if he depart being good, all the treasures of his virtue will lie in safety, and in an inviolable storehouse.
24:39
And the living, tell me, does it not make them more sober-minded and more forbearing? Do you not see that often, in
24:40
attending a funeral, the wealthy, puffed up and lifting their eyebrows, when they see the body lying mute and motionless, and children in orphanhood, and a wife in widowhood, and friends in dejection, and servants clothed in black, and the whole aspect of the house full of gloom—how are they humbled? how are they abased? how are they broken down? For indeed, having enjoyed ten thousand instructions and gained nothing, from that sight all at once they turn philosophers, learning both the worthlessness and perishableness of human nature, and the rottenness and instability of their own power, and foreseeing in others' misfortunes their own changes of fortune.
24:41
因為若在死亡尚且存在之時,就有這麼多的搶奪、這麼多的貪婪,而且如同魚類一般,強者吞吃弱者;
For if, while death exists, there are so many robberies, so many acts of greed, and, like the fishes, the more powerful swallow up the weaker;
24:42
那麼,若沒有死亡,他們的貪婪何時才會止息呢?因為他們明知自己所搶奪的東西享受不成,反倒不論情願與否都要交給別人,尚且如此瘋狂發癲;
if there were no death, when would they ever cease from their greed? For if, knowing that they will not enjoy the things they seize, but willingly and unwillingly must give them up to others, they nevertheless rage and are frenzied thus;
24:43
if they had this in security, when would the fires of their evil desire ever be quenched for them? And what more? Are not the crowns of martyrdom woven through death? And what of Paul? Did he not set up ten thousand trophies, saying:
24:44
"I die daily—by your boasting"? For death is not an evil, but an evil death is evil.
24:45
"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His holy ones."
24:46
「罪人之死乃是惡的」;
"The death of sinners is evil";
24:47
calling that death evil which is to depart with an evil conscience, weighed down and pressed by the many cares of transgressions.
24:48
Whereas he who has a clean conscience runs to the prizes, withdraws toward the crown.
24:49
And that you may learn that it is not the nature of things, but the disposition of men, that produces this turmoil, hear how Paul earnestly longs for this, now saying:
24:50
「我們這在帳棚裡的人也是歎息勞苦,等候得著兒子的名分,就是我們身體得贖」;
"For indeed we who are in this tabernacle groan, awaiting the adoption, the redemption of our body";
24:51
and now, in another place, declaring the same thing:
24:52
But even if I am poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice together with you all.
24:53
And in the same manner do you also rejoice, and rejoice together with me.
24:54
But if death is not burdensome, but rather even longed for by those who live rightly, how much more is poverty and all other things.
24:55
Sought out unto all His good pleasures.
24:56
在此,我以為祂是在論說受造之物,高聲宣揚神的智慧;
Here He seems to me to be discoursing about the creatures, proclaiming aloud the wisdom of God;
24:57
but higher up he was speaking of His works, although we too, for the sake of the faint-hearted and of another meaning, laid hold of these — the prodigies, the wonders, which He has often accomplished while ordering the race of men.
24:58
But what does it mean, 'Sought out unto all His good pleasures'? Made exact, he says — as another translator also put it — prepared, completed, brought into being, fulfilled, sufficient to accomplish His good pleasures, able to bear witness to His power, not limping nor falling short in carrying out His commands; which is what He says elsewhere also:
24:59
火、冰雹、雪、冰、狂暴的風,都成就祂的話語;
Fire, hail, snow, ice, stormy wind fulfilling His word;
24:60
that is to say, His commands.
24:61
Thus the Prophet also said:
24:62
祂造月亮定季節;日頭自知何時沉落;
He made the moon for seasons; the sun knows its going down;
24:63
You appointed darkness, and it became night.
24:64
這些受造之物不僅成就了牠們被造所要成就的事;
And not only do these accomplish the things for which they were made;
24:65
but even if He commands the contrary, here too there is great obedience.
24:66
He gave command to the sea, and it not only did not drown, which was its natural work, but having spread out its waves, it carried the people of the Jews across more securely than upon rock. The furnace not only did not burn, but even furnished a whistling dew.
24:67
The wild beasts not only did not devour, but even took the place of bodyguards over Daniel.
24:68
The sea-monster not only did not swallow him down, but even kept the deposit safe and sound.
24:69
The earth not only did not bear up, but even, more grievously than the sea,
24:70
把他們沉沒下去,就是當地裂開,吞了大坍,並掩蓋了亞比蘭一黨的時候;
drowned them down, when it opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered over the congregation of Abiram;
24:71
人還可以看見,在現存之物中所行的許多別的奇事;
and one might see many another marvel wrought among the things that exist;
24:72
so that those who are exceedingly foolish, and who deify nature, may learn that things are not led by the tyranny of nature, but that all things yield and give way to the counsel of God.
24:73
For this is the Maker of nature, who refashions all existing things according to what seems good to Him, now keeping their bounds unmoved, and now, whenever He wills, easily plucking them up and changing them into their opposite.
24:74
Sought out unto all His good pleasures.
24:75
他說,是為著祂的命令,為著祂的吩咐;
Unto His commands, he says, unto His injunctions;
24:76
and not only unto His injunctions, but also unto His being known by men, which is indeed His foremost will, and for the sake of which He especially made these things.
24:77
What then the Prophet says is of this sort:
24:78
that they are so perfectly completed as to implant in the minds of men, for those who give heed and possess understanding, a most exact and clear and most distinct knowledge concerning Him.
24:79
For to this end especially did His will from the beginning fashion them — by their magnitude, their beauty, their position, their operation, their ministry, and by all else stirring up the soul of the beholder, and rousing the mind to seek the Creator and supremely skilled Craftsman, God, and to worship Him who made them, so that the whole body of creation might become, in place of books and letters, a means of instruction.
24:80
And the creatures introduce for us the greatest teaching not only unto the knowledge of God, but also unto the ordering of our life.
24:81
因為那貪心的人,當他看見白晝讓位於黑夜、日頭讓位於月亮時,必要因這些元素的井然有序而心生羞愧,縱使他較為強盛,也不再貪戀那些比他微弱之人的財物;
For the covetous man, when he sees the day yielding to the night, and the sun to the moon, will feel shame before the good order of the elements, and even though he be more powerful, will not covet the possessions of those weaker than himself;
24:82
and the adulterer and licentious man, when he sees the sea raging, and then being bridled at the shore, once more feeling shame before the good order of these unruly waters, will quickly be able to lay low his own surging lust, and by the fear of Christ to bridle its onward rush, and to break up all the foam of this licentious impulse, and to lead it back to self-control.
24:83
And concerning the resurrection also, by looking upon the dry land he will easily be able to philosophize, and to receive the teaching concerning it.
24:84
因為當他看見地接受一粒堅實的麥子,先使它分解腐爛,繼而生出遠為美好之物;
For when he sees the earth receiving a solid grain of wheat, then first dissolving and rotting it, and bringing forth something far better;
24:85
當他看見葡萄樹在冬天光禿禿的,沒有葉子、卷鬚和果串,本身就像枯乾的骸骨般是一根乾木,繼而,當春天來臨,又重獲一切的秀美;
when he sees the vine in winter stripped of leaves, and tendrils, and clusters, itself a dry stock, like the dry bones, then, when spring is come, recovering all its comeliness;
24:86
in the bodies of the plants and of the seeds, which rise again after they have been destroyed, he will be able also concerning his own flesh to philosophize.
24:87
And industriousness again he will learn from the ant, and love of the beautiful from the bee, and the spirit of fellowship, just as the Proverb says:
24:88
Go to the ant, O sluggard, and be zealous for its ways, and become wiser than it.
24:89
For that creature, though it has no farm, nor anyone compelling it, nor is under a master, prepares its food in summer, and lays up a great store at the harvest.
24:90
或者你去看蜜蜂,學牠是何等的勞工;
Or go to the bee, and learn how she is a worker;
24:91
whose labors both kings and common men bring to themselves for health.
24:92
And yet, though feeble in strength, because she honored wisdom she was advanced to honor.
24:93
For the bee herself will once again discourse with you, teaching you not to admire without discernment the beauty of bodies when the soul possesses no virtue, nor to despise unshapeliness when the soul happens to be adorned.
24:94
This very thing, then, the author of the Proverbs also declared when he said:
24:95
Small among winged things is the bee, yet her fruit is the chief of sweet things.
24:96
Consider for me the birds, and from them you will receive true philosophy.
24:97
It is for this reason, too, that Christ said:
24:98
Behold the birds of the heaven, that they neither sow nor reap, and your heavenly Father feeds them.
24:99
For if the irrational creatures take no anxious thought about food, what defense will you have, who do not display even so great a disdain for present things as the birds do? And if you also wish to despise adornment, the flowers of the field will train you not to be a lover of the world's finery.
24:100
This very thing Christ also declared when he said:
24:101
Behold the lilies of the field, how they neither spin nor toil.
24:102
Amen I say to you, that not even Solomon was arrayed like one of these.
24:103
所以,每當你熱衷於衣裳的華美時,當思想:無論你如何爭競,得勝的獎賞仍歸於那草,你絕無法與它相比;
Whenever, therefore, you are eager over the beauty of garments, consider that however much you strive for the prize, the victory rests with the grass, and you will not be able to contend against it;
24:104
and so put an end to this irrational madness.
24:105
And there are many other things too—from the irrational creatures, from the flowers, and from the seeds—by which one may practice true philosophy.
24:106
Confession and majesty are his work.
24:107
這就是說,祂每一件作為;
That is to say, each of his works;
24:108
for he certainly does not say these things concerning one single work.
24:109
But another interpreter said:
24:110
Praise and dignity is his handiwork;
24:111
while this one has, Confession—that is, thanksgiving and glory.
24:112
For each of the things seen is sufficient to conduct the beholder to thanksgiving, to a hymn, to praise, to the giving of glory.
24:113
Why is this? For what purpose is this? Yes, and the darkness and the day, and famine and abundance, and the desert and the uninhabited waste, and the rich and deep-soiled land, and life and death, and all the things that are seen, are for those who study them with exactness sufficient and able to rouse them to thanksgiving.
24:114
This, at any rate, God declared through one of the prophets, when he counted his punishments as benefactions, saying:
24:115
「我傾覆了他們,正如神傾覆所多瑪和蛾摩拉一樣;
I overthrew them, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah;
24:116
I smote them with burning and with jaundice.
24:117
I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, and out of the house of bondage I redeemed them;
24:118
reckoning his punishments as benefactions.
24:119
For indeed these things too are the acts of one benefiting, correcting, disciplining, guiding as a tutor, and cutting away wickedness.
24:120
因為人所行的,有些是出於善意,有些卻是出於憎恨與厭棄;
For men do some things out of kindness, but other things out of hatred and aversion;
24:121
但神所行的一切都是出於慈愛:例如,祂出於恩慈把人安置在樂園中,又出於恩慈把他逐出樂園;
but God does all things in love: for instance, in kindness he set man in paradise, and again in kindness he cast him out of paradise;
24:122
in kindness he brought about the flood, and in kindness he brought down that fire upon the Sodomites.
24:123
And whatever of the things that have happened one might name, he does each of them for a benefaction.
24:124
祂出於恩慈,甚至以地獄相威嚇;
In kindness he threatened even hell;
24:125
正如父親不僅在照顧兒女時是父親,就是在責打他們時也是父親,並且責打時作父親的身分並不亞於照顧時;
and just as fathers are fathers not only when tending their children but also when striking them, and are no less fathers in striking than in tending them;
24:126
For what son is there whom a father does not discipline? And Solomon says:
24:127
「因為主所愛的,祂必管教;
For whom the Lord loves he disciplines;
24:128
and he scourges every son whom he receives.
24:129
His righteousness abides unto the age of the age.
24:130
This, it seems to me, he says here on account of those who are made to stumble at the hardships that befall some contrary to their expectations, all but exhorting them and saying:
24:131
當你看見人被誣告、被欺凌、且不按其應得地受苦時,不要驚慌;
Be not disturbed when you see men slandered, treated with insolence, and suffering wrongfully beyond their desert;
24:132
For there abides an incorruptible tribunal, there abides a pure verdict, rendering to each according to his desert.
24:133
But if you seek that verdict now, take heed lest you first pronounce the sentence against your own self.
24:134
For if God were to bring punishment upon each single sin, and to pronounce the just sentence upon each of those who transgress, the race of men would long ago have been swept away.
24:135
And why do I speak of this man or that? For bringing into our midst the chief of all men, I will try to demonstrate this very thing—that Paul, that herald to the whole world, who was caught up to the third heaven, who was borne into
24:136
paradise, who shared in the awesome mysteries, the chosen vessel, the bridal escort of Christ, who displayed an angelic manner of life, who attained to such great virtue—
24:137
For if He had not been willing to be long-suffering toward him, nor to bear with him, but at the very moment when he was sinning and blaspheming and persecuting had brought the just sentence hard upon his heels, He would long ago have snatched him away before his repentance.
24:138
Therefore he himself, knowing this, said:
24:139
我感謝那賜給我力量的基督,因祂以我為忠心,派我承擔這職事;我從前原是褻瀆神的、逼迫人的、侮慢人的;
I give thanks to Christ who strengthened me, that He counted me faithful, appointing me to the ministry, though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and insolent;
24:140
but I obtained mercy, that in me first Christ might display all long-suffering, as a pattern for those who were to believe on Him unto life everlasting.
24:141
And what of this? If He had chastised the harlot, when would she have been changed? And what of this? If He had exacted the penalty of Matthew the tax-collector at the time of his tax-gathering, before his change, would He not have snatched him away before his repentance? So too the robber, so too the magi, so too each one of those who sin.
24:142
For this very reason He holds back His wrath and the recompense according to desert, calling men to repentance.
24:143
But if they remain uncorrected, they will assuredly undergo the just sentence.
24:144
Wherefore the Prophet, both consoling those who are wronged and bringing to soberness those who do wrong, added the words: His righteousness abides unto the ages.
24:145
And what he means to say by this is somewhat as follows:
24:146
你這受欺壓的人,若你臨終仍未得著公道,不要灰心絕望;
Do not you, the one who is wronged, if you should end your life without obtaining what is just, fall into despair;
24:147
因為你離開此世之後,必定要得著你勞苦的報償;
for after your departure from this world you will assuredly receive the recompense for your toils;
24:148
而你這搶奪一切、貪婪詐取、擾亂眾人的人,若你平安地結束一生,也不要因此壯膽;
and do not you again, the one who plunders all things and defrauds and throws all into confusion, if you should end your life in peace, take courage;
24:149
for you will render an account of all things after your departure from this world, and you will pay the recompense of your wickedness.
24:150
For God is one who abides forever, and has a righteousness that abides forever, in no way interrupted by death, neither as regards the recompense of the toils undertaken for virtue's sake, nor as regards the requital of the punishments due for wickedness.
24:151
He made a remembrance of His wonders.
24:152
What does it mean, He made a remembrance of His wonders? He did not cease, it says, from continually working wonders.
24:153
For this is what He made a remembrance means:
24:154
He did not cease, He did not desist, throughout every generation, from working wonders and rousing the more dull-witted by means of His marvels.
24:155
因為那高尚而愛慕智慧的靈魂,並不需要神蹟;
For the lofty and philosophic soul will have no need of signs;
24:156
For blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.
24:157
But since He cares not for these alone, but also for the more dull-witted, He does not cease from working wonders in well-nigh every generation.
24:158
因為那可見萬物的整個受造界,本身已是足夠的奇妙作為了;
For the whole creation of visible things is indeed a sufficient work of wonder;
24:159
yet nevertheless, rousing the sluggishness of the many, in the midst of this great theatre He displayed many marvels, both privately and in common—such as that at the Flood, that at the confusion of tongues, the things concerning Sodom, the things concerning Abraham, the things concerning Isaac, the things concerning Jacob, the things in Egypt, the things at the Exodus of the Jews, the things in the wilderness, the things in the land of Palestine, the things in Babylon, the things after the Return, the things in the days of the Maccabees, the things after the coming of Christ, the things at the coming itself, the things happening down to this very day—the overthrow of Jerusalem, the building up of the Church, the word that runs everywhere, that was lifted up through waves, that was increased through wars, the multitudes of the martyrs, and all the rest.
24:160
And one might behold many particular wonders as well, both such as have happened in a household and such as in cities.
24:161
But for the present let us look at the universal ones, plain and known to all, which come to pass in every generation.
24:162
How many things came to pass under Julian, who surpassed all men in impiety, when the Church was being warred upon? How many under Maximinus? How many before those emperors? And if you wish, consider also the things that befell in our own generation—such as the crosses that were suddenly imprinted upon garments, the temple of Apollo laid low by a thunderbolt, the translation of the holy martyr Babylas at Daphne,
24:163
and the manifest victory over the demon, the strange death of the steward of the royal treasures, the very slaying of the emperor himself—of Julian, who surpassed all men in impiety—and the destruction of that uncle of his, the springs teeming with worms, and countless other things: the famine, the drought, the scarcity of waters that fell upon the cities together with him, and countless other things everywhere.
24:164
And you have come to know the things that befell at that time in Palestine.
24:165
For when the Jews wished to rebuild that temple which had been thrown down by the verdict of God, fire leaping out from the foundations drove them all away, and the work bears witness by remaining unfinished.
24:166
Compassionate and merciful is the Lord; He has given food to those who fear Him.
24:167
Having proclaimed His benefactions—those wrought through wonders, those wrought through works—and the care that has been shown on our behalf, by this too he again enlarges his discourse, showing that, having done so many and so great things for the salvation of men, and having instructed them in every way, and instructing them unto the knowledge of God and the highest philosophy, and upholding their life, He does not do this as a matter of debt (which would be the greatest grace), but out of mercy and love for mankind—not as though He Himself had need of them, but solely out of goodness.
24:168
He has given food to those who fear Him.
24:169
For what reason has he here set down those who fear Him? For surely He does not feed these alone.
24:170
For also in the Gospel He says, that He makes His sun to rise upon the evil and the good, and sends rain upon the just and the unjust.
24:171
How then did he say, To those who fear Him? By food here he seems to me to mean not the food of the body, but that of the soul.
24:172
因此,他所論述的僅是那些敬畏他的人;
For this reason he speaks only concerning those who fear him;
24:173
for this has been set apart for these.
24:174
For just as the body is nourished, so also is the soul nourished.
24:175
'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'
24:176
This, then, is the nourishment of which he speaks, which he gave in a special manner to those who fear him: the instruction that comes through the word, the discipline, and the whole of true wisdom.
24:177
'He will be mindful of his covenant for ever.'
24:178
Again, restraining the arrogance of the Jews and cutting short their conceit, or rather showing that the good things they enjoyed they enjoyed not on account of their own worthiness, but on account of his friendship toward their fathers and the covenants that had been made with those men, he says:
24:179
'He will be mindful of his covenant for ever;'
24:180
which very thing Moses also charged them to say and to bear in mind as they were entering into the land of promise.
24:181
'For if you build,' he says, 'splendid cities, and gird yourself about with abundance of riches, do not say that these things have come to pass because of my righteousness, but because of the covenants with your fathers.'
24:182
因為沒有甚麼比驕橫更惡的了;
For nothing is worse than arrogance;
24:183
therefore in every way and at all times God continually cuts it off.
24:184
'He declared the power of his works to his people, to give them the inheritance of the nations.'
24:185
他將話語從普世的事轉到個別的事;
He shifts his discourse from the universal to the particular;
24:186
from the things that came to pass throughout the whole inhabited world, to the things that befell the Jews.
24:187
And indeed, if one were to examine the matter accurately, these too hold the rank of universal things.
24:188
For the things that happened toward them became instruction for the others; and the wars, and the trophies, and the victories were enough, in place of a proclamation, for those who gave heed.
24:189
For these things came about not by any human sequence of cause and effect, but beyond all reason.
24:190
For what natural sequence was there in this: that at their trumpet-blast the walls were cast down; that a woman leading the army should conquer and prevail; and that a little child should overthrow barbarian armies by the cast of a single stone? And other marvels of this kind likewise came to pass.
24:191
Thus they overcame their enemies; thus they cast them out of Palestine.
24:192
When, therefore, he says, 'He declared the power of his works to his people,' he means nothing other than this:
24:193
he displayed his power, not merely by casting out the nations, but in such a manner that one could most clearly know that, even if the earlier things had sufficed—when the blow inflicted upon those peoples was sent from God, and with him leading the army the affairs of the enemy were being decided.
24:194
For it was not merely by words, but also by deeds that he instructed them: through their sandals, through their garments, through their food, through the light by night and by day, through the cloud, through wars, through peace, through trophies, through husbandry, through rains; and all these things sent forth a voice proclaiming the Master, and pricking their hardened understanding; and no span of time was left in which he did not continually display his signs.
24:195
'The works of his hands are truth and judgment.'
24:196
Since he had discoursed concerning his power, he discourses also concerning his righteous judgment—namely, that he displayed in the things he then did not only power, but also great righteousness.
24:197
For he did not simply cast out the nations because he wished to bring the Jews in, but did so with justice.
24:198
Therefore Moses also said in another place:
24:199
'For the iniquities of the Amorites are not yet filled up.'
24:200
And these things are to be said not only of the Jews and of what befell them, but again the saying is universal.
24:201
因為凡他所行的都是真實與公義;
For all things done by him are truth and judgment;
24:202
'judgment'—that is to say, righteousness.
24:203
But Scripture often knows to call loving-kindness 'truth' as well.
24:204
What he says, then, is of this sort: that he mingled all things together with righteousness and loving-kindness.
24:205
For if he had employed only the principle of strict justice, all would have perished.
24:206
Wherefore this same prophet says in another place:
24:207
'Enter not into judgment with your servant;'
24:208
'for in your sight shall no living man be justified.'
24:209
'If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?' All things, then, done by him are full of both of these.
24:210
因為他若只索討公義所要求的,眾人就都要被毀滅了;
For if he were to demand only what is just, all would have been destroyed;
24:211
but if he employed loving-kindness alone, the greater number would become more slothful.
24:212
For this reason, diversifying the salvation of mankind, He has employed both of these means for their correction.
24:213
All His commandments are faithful.
24:214
What He does in many places He accomplishes here also: passing from the wisdom displayed in the manifold creation and from His providential care over to the giving of the law, and thus again setting in motion this same part of His providence.
24:215
For it was not only by creating a creation so vast and so great, but also by laying down the law, that He set the human race aright.
24:216
Wherefore also in the eighteenth psalm, having divided both these parts, he said at the beginning:
24:217
諸天述說神的榮耀;
The heavens declare the glory of God;
24:218
and when he came to the middle, and had completed the discourse concerning the creation, he added:
24:219
耶和華的律法完全無瑕,能使靈魂回轉;
The law of the Lord is blameless, converting souls;
24:220
the commandment of the Lord is radiant, enlightening the eyes.
24:221
So here too, having spoken concerning His portents and wonders and works, he turns his discourse to the theme of the commandments, saying thus:
24:222
All His commandments are faithful, established for ever and ever, made in truth and uprightness.
24:223
He did not say simply, 'All,' but, stirring up a vast host of commandments, he set down this word.
24:224
For there are also the commandments of the creation, which all creation observes: sun and moon, day and night, the stars, and the course of the earth and of nature.
24:225
There are commandments given to nature from the beginning, when He fashioned man, concerning which Paul says:
24:226
For when the Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things of the law, these, not having a law, are a law unto themselves.
24:227
For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.
24:228
There are also the written commandments.
24:229
And all these have remained.
24:230
But if some were done away with, it was not that they were altered for the worse, but rather refashioned for the better.
24:231
因為那「不可殺人」的誡命並未被廢除,反而被加強了;
For the saying, 'You shall not kill,' was not done away with, but intensified;
24:232
and the saying, 'You shall not commit adultery,' was not abolished, but made greater.
24:233
And He said, 'I have not come to abolish the law or the prophets, but to fulfil.'
24:234
因為那不動怒的人,必更遠遠地遠離殺人;
For he who does not grow angry will far more abstain from murder;
24:235
and he who does not look with unchaste eyes has pitched his tent far from adultery.
24:236
The law, then, has this above all as its distinctive mark—being immortal, being perpetual—whether it be the law of creation, or the law of nature, or the law of true wisdom, or the law of the New Testament.
24:237
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall by no means pass away.
24:238
For all things that God wills to abide, abide perpetually, and there is nothing that can move them.
24:239
Made in truth and uprightness.
24:240
「憑真理與正直」是甚麼意思呢?他說,這些誡命裡沒有任何彎曲之處,沒有任何盤根錯節,沒有任何含糊不清,沒有任何是為了討好誰或報復誰而設的,而是一切都指向有益處、有裨益之事;
What does 'in truth and uprightness' mean? There is nothing crooked in them, he says, nothing tortuous, nothing obscure, nothing framed to gratify or to spite anyone, but all things are ordered toward what is beneficial and profitable;
24:241
not like human laws, which contain much that is perishable, much that is obscure, and much that is merely human.
24:242
For indeed many laws have often been enacted out of human passions.
24:243
For, whether avenging himself on an enemy, or wishing to do a favour to a friend, a man has composed his statutes in such a way.
24:244
但神的律法並非如此;它們反而比太陽更為明亮,尋求那些受其約束之人的益處,引領他們回歸美德、回歸事物的真相——而非回到那些虛假之物,我是指財富和權勢;因為這些都是虛假的;
But the divine laws are not so; rather, they remain brighter than the sun, seeking the benefit of those for whom they are legislated, leading them back to virtue and to the truth of things—not to these false things, I mean wealth and dominion; for these are false;
24:245
whereas the things of God are truth, teaching men not how they may become more affluent, nor how they may attain the things of the present, but how they may enjoy the things to come.
24:246
Concerning things true and upright, and having nothing perverse in them, those laws spoke all their words.
24:247
All His commandments are faithful.
24:248
What does 'faithful' mean? Firm, abiding.
24:249
因為即使有人違犯了它們,刑罰仍必隨之而來,而這些刑罰是不會動搖的;
For even if they are transgressed, the punishments follow, and these are not shaken;
24:250
and if men transgress them, yet God vindicates them.
24:251
Do not, then, say that the things spoken were uttered by way of threat, or hyperbolically.
24:252
No lawgiver speaks only for the sake of threatening, but also for the sake of correction.
24:253
But if you do not fully believe concerning things to come, take your proof from things past.
24:254
The flood in the days of Noah, the burning of Sodom, the destruction of Pharaoh, the utter ruin of the Jews, the captivities, and the wars—were these matters of mere threat, or of actual experience of events? And if such things came to pass in the type, how much more in the reality, in proportion as the wickedness is greater of those who dared such deeds after so great a care and correction.
24:255
The Lord sent redemption to his people.
24:256
按照歷史的意義,他是指猶太人的得釋放;
According to the historical sense, he means the deliverance of the Jews;
24:257
but according to the higher spiritual sense, the deliverance of the whole world, which the sequel also makes plain:
24:258
He has commanded his covenant for ever.
24:259
Here he speaks of the New Covenant.
24:260
For since he had made mention of commandment and of law, and this had been transgressed and had wrought wrath, therefore he says that He sent redemption to his people, even as He himself also said:
24:261
I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
24:262
因為律法被違背時,就帶來刑罰;
For since the law, when transgressed, brought punishment;
24:263
因為他說,律法是惹動忿怒的;
for the law, he says, works wrath;
24:264
因為那裡沒有律法,那裡也就沒有過犯;
for where there is no law, there is no transgression either;
24:265
又說,世人都犯了罪,虧缺了神的榮耀,如今卻蒙祂的恩典白白地稱義;
and, All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, being justified freely by his grace;
24:266
The Lord sent redemption to his people.
24:267
Yet nevertheless it was not redemption simply by itself, but after the redemption a law also, that we might show forth a manner of life worthy of the grace.
24:268
Holy and terrible is his name.
24:269
For since he had pondered all the things that proclaim his providential care and his forethought—that in the Old, that in the New, that in his works, that through his commandments, that through his wonders, that through his marvels—being filled with divine inspiration and astonished at his majesty, he brings his discourse to a close in doxology, offering up a hymn to Him who does these things.
24:270
祂的名是聖的,是可畏的;
Holy and terrible is his name;
24:271
that is to say, full of amazement, full of great wonder.
24:272
And if his name is such, how much more his essence? And how is his name holy and terrible? Demons tremble at it, diseases dread it, and by the use of this name the apostles set right the whole world.
24:273
大衛用這名代替兵器,就打倒了那個蠻族的巨人;
With this David, using it instead of a weapon, cast down that barbarian;
24:274
藉著這名,無數的大事得以成就;
by this were countless deeds accomplished;
24:275
by this we are initiated into the sacred mystery.
24:276
Considering therefore how many wonders his name works, how many benefits, how it disperses the adversaries, how it makes safe his own people, and reckoning up deeds that surpass the course of nature and overcome the reasoning of men, he says:
24:277
Holy and terrible is his name.
24:278
And if it is holy, it requires holy mouths for its praise, holy and pure ones.
24:279
A good understanding have all they that do it.
24:280
What is 'beginning'? A fountain, a root, a foundation.
24:281
For since he had said such great and lofty things concerning the Master of the whole world, and had been filled with such astonishment, he adds this as a consequence, showing henceforth that whoever fears Him is filled with all wisdom and becomes prudent.
24:282
Then, lest anyone should suppose that the matters of wisdom go no further than knowledge, he added:
24:283
A good understanding have all they that do it.
24:284
For faith does not suffice, unless there be also present a manner of life corresponding to the faith.
24:285
And how is the fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom? It delivers from all wickedness, it accomplishes every virtue.
24:286
And by wisdom he means not that which lies in words, but that which lies in deeds.
24:287
Since even those outside the faith defined wisdom thus: a discernment of things divine and human.
24:288
And this art the fear of God teaches, taking away wickedness, planting virtue, disposing us to despise the things present, and transferring us toward heaven.
24:289
And what is wiser than such a soul? Here he seeks not the hearer only, but also the doer.
24:290
凡遵行的人便有美好的聰明;
A good understanding have all they that do it;
24:291
that is, to those who practice wisdom and display it through their works belongs a good understanding.
24:292
'Good understanding,' he said, for there is also a wicked understanding, as when he says:
24:293
'They are wise to do evil;'
24:294
'but to do good they have not known.'
24:295
But he here seeks the understanding that consists in virtue.
24:296
'His praise endures forever and ever.'
24:297
The thanksgiving, the doxology which is rendered through works, is immortal; and before these, that very praise which is bound up together with His essence.
24:298
因為神是不朽的,就其自身而言也極其配得讚美;
For God is immortal, and in Himself exceedingly worthy of praise;
24:299
而當你思想祂的威嚴以及其餘的一切時,祂也是配得讚美的;
and He is worthy of praise also when you consider His majesty and all the rest;
24:300
He is worthy of praise also through His works, when you behold His wisdom in the things that are seen.
24:301
He says these things to exhort men to thanksgiving, and to show that those who murmur against the things that come to pass are worthy of no pardon at all, not even the slightest.
24:302
For when His praise, and the thanksgiving, and the doxology are thus manifest, and evident, and clear, and unmoved, and fixed fast, and abiding, so as to be even immortal, boundless and without end, while those men, being ignorant of it, utter the very opposite,
24:303
they are doing nothing else than contradicting things far clearer than the sun, and are willfully blind.
24:304
For it is not something transient, that they should be ignorant of it, nor dim and obscure, but it is manifest, and continual, and immortal, ever abiding, and never having an end.
