For the end, concerning the secret things of the Son, a psalm of David. Another version: A triumphal song upon the death of the Son, an ode of David. Another: Of the youth of the Son. I will confess to You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will declare all Your wondrous works.
6:2
This too belongs to the wisdom of the Spirit.
6:3
For He neither made them all short, nor drew them all out to great length, but varied the book even in its measure — by length rousing our sloth, and by brevity giving rest to our weariness.
6:4
I will confess to You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will declare all Your wondrous works.
6:5
The kind of confession is twofold.
6:6
For it is either the condemnation of one's own sins, or thanksgiving to God.
6:7
Here, however, it signifies thanksgiving.
6:8
And what does it mean, 'With my whole heart'? With all eagerness, with earnestness, he says.
6:9
Not only in prosperity, but also amid adverse things.
6:10
For this above all marks a thankful soul, this a soul given to true wisdom — to give thanks even in griefs, to glorify Him for all things, not only for the benefits, but also for the chastisements.
6:11
For this procures a greater reward.
6:12
因為當你為美好之事感恩時,你不過是償還了所欠的債;
For in giving thanks for good things, you have paid a debt;
6:13
but in giving thanks amid evils, you have made God your debtor.
6:14
For he who has fared well, and acknowledges the favour, has repaid what he owed.
6:15
But he who has fared ill, and yet glorifies God, has established a debt in his favour.
6:16
因此,神為著這樣的感恩,就賜下許多別的美善,無論在當時或如今;
In return for this thanksgiving, then, God renders many other good things, both then and now;
6:17
so that we shall not even feel the perception of our hardships.
6:18
因為沒有人會為著他向神感恩的那些事憂傷;
For no one grieves over the very things for which he gives thanks to God;
6:19
so that we shall reap yet another gain — the driving away of despondency.
6:20
For when you are deprived of money and give thanks, the loss cannot sting you as much as the thanksgiving gladdens you.
6:21
這對魔鬼乃是致命的一擊;
This is a mortal blow to the devil;
6:22
這使心思愛慕真智慧;
this makes the mind given to true wisdom;
6:23
this establishes the true judgment concerning present things.
6:24
因為許多人對地上這些事並沒有正確的判斷;
For many of mankind do not hold the true estimate concerning the things here below;
6:25
Thus also madmen fear things that are not fearful, and often dread things that have no existence, and flee from shadows.
6:26
To these are like also those who dread the loss of money.
6:27
For the fear is not of nature, but of the will.
6:28
因為若這事本是可悲的,凡失去它的人就都必然憂傷;
For if the thing were truly grievous, all who are deprived of it would necessarily grieve;
6:29
but if we do not all grieve when we fail to obtain it, then the grief comes no longer from the nature of the thing, but from an imperfect mind.
6:30
因為正如在黑暗中,人常常連一條繩子也懼怕,把它當作蛇,並且疑神疑鬼,把朋友當作仇敵;
For just as in the dark a man often fears even a rope, taking it for a serpent, and suspects everything, and reckons friends to be enemies;
6:31
so also those who are held fast by unreason, as though seized by some deep darkness, do not recognize the nature of things,
6:32
的本性,反倒在污泥中打滾,也不以草為草;
the nature of things, but wallow in the mire, and do not consider grass to be grass;
6:33
他們既被貪財所充滿,就聞不出它的惡臭;
and being filled full of avarice, they do not perceive its foul stench;
6:34
but if they withdraw from it, then they will know.
6:35
又正如那些迷戀醜陋女子的人,等到這病症止息了,那時才看出她的醜惡;
And just as those who love an ugly woman, when they cease from the malady, then perceive her hideousness;
6:36
so also do the lovers of avarice.
6:37
'And how,' someone says, 'shall I be able to quench this passion?' Once again I will make use of the same illustration.
6:38
Just as the man who is enamoured of an unlovely woman, if he continually keeps company with her, fans the furnace into flame; but if he withdraws himself a little, the passion by degrees ebbs away;
6:39
so also do you withdraw a little, yield but a little, and that small space will become a great distance.
6:40
Only make a beginning of the good work.
6:41
Have you a house to spare? Sell it, and give to the needy, not reckoning that you are alienating it from yourself, but rather that you are making it more truly your own.
6:42
不要只看那付出的花費,倒要看那將要得的收益;
Look not at the outlay, but at the revenue;
6:43
not that you are deprived of it here, but that you become its lord and master there.
6:44
And thus you will also be able to declare the wonders of God without ceasing.
6:45
For this is what the psalm says from the very beginning.
6:46
至於那貪愛錢財的人,卻不能專心從事於此;
Whereas the lover of money cannot greatly occupy himself with this;
6:47
for continually he is anxious over interest, over contracts, over bonds, over merchandise, over wills, over the prices of fields, the prices of houses, over gains and trafficking, and both in his talk and in his cares he never leaves off.
6:48
For where a man's treasure is, there is his heart also.
6:49
他所談論的是這些事,他所掛慮的也是這些事;
These are the things he utters, these are the things over which he frets;
6:50
正如僕人為主人的事操心,這人也照樣為他那主子的事操心;
and just as servants are anxious about their masters' affairs, so also is this man anxious about the affairs of his Master, Mammon;
6:51
what has it commanded? what has been accomplished? what has not yet been accomplished but is still to come? For this very reason I exhort you, once you are freed from that siege, to occupy yourself with these narratives, recounting day by day the wonders of God, both those wrought privately and those wrought in common, those toward all and those toward each single person.
6:52
因為人生中的萬事都充滿了這樣可述說的題材;
For the things of this life are full of such narratives;
6:53
無論你從何處起頭,你都必看見那題旨更加輝煌地湧流出來,或從天上,或從地上,或從空中,或從那些無理性的活物,或從種子,或從植物;
and from wherever you begin, you will see the theme welling up more splendidly, whether from heaven, or from earth, or from the air, or from the irrational creatures, or from seeds, or from plants;
6:54
whether you wish to recount the ancient gifts, or those before the Law, or those under the Law, or those in the age of grace, or those after our departure hence, or those in death itself, you will find countless seas of these narratives.
6:55
What folly, then, would it not be, when we have so much to recount, whereby both delight and gain and profit come to the soul, to defile our reason in the mire by talking of covetousness and rapine? 2.
6:56
And if you will, leaving the things above, let us discourse concerning the earth: its magnitude, its position, its usefulness, its nature, its perpetual travail, the produce that springs from it, so varied and manifold, the seeds, the herbs, the plants, the flowers, the meadows, the gardens.
6:57
然後我們再用言語逐一分辨每一棵樹的形狀、它的位置、它的高度、它的芬芳、它的果子、它的時節、它的用途,並衡量其餘的一切,也衡量這地本身,看它結果實之處與不結果實之處;
From these again let us in our discourse mark off each tree's form, its position, its height, its fragrance, its fruit, its season, its service, taking account of all the rest, and of the earth itself, both its fruitful and its unfruitful parts;
6:58
因為這一處出產鐵,那一處出產銅,那一處出產金子,那一處出產銀子;
for one part has brought forth iron, another copper, another gold, another silver;
6:59
and another spices, and another medicinal herbs of all kinds and every sort.
6:60
誰能說盡諸水的功用,無論是甜水還是鹹水;山嶺的用處;各種大理石的礦坑、其中的泉源、那些宜於作屋頂與建築之用的樹木呢?這一切都是曠野的出產;
What could one say of the use of the waters, both fresh and salt; of the service of the mountains; of the quarries of various marbles, the springs within them, the trees suitable for roofs and for building? All these are the fruit of the wilderness;
6:61
it also nourishes all the living creatures and the wild beasts.
6:62
誰能說盡湖泊、泉源、江河呢?因為正如生育了兒女的婦人,湧流出乳汁的泉源,好給她們的兒女供應養分;
What could one say of the lakes, the springs, the rivers? For just as women who have borne children pour forth a fountain of milk and thereby furnish nourishment to their offspring;
6:63
so also does the earth, stretching out to gardens and paradises its rivers and springs as breasts, furnish abundant irrigation.
6:64
然而在婦人那裡,是嬰孩必須來就那乳房;
But in the case of women, the child must come to the breast;
6:65
whereas here the earth herself stretches out her breasts,
6:66
reaching them out everywhere, bringing them down from on high.
6:67
The wilderness has yet another use as well.
6:68
For it is the more suitable for the body's health, affording a purer air to breathe, and the vantage from a height to survey the whole inhabited world, and to give oneself to contemplation in the solitude, and to draw a little breath free from the cares of this life.
6:69
What could one say of the songbirds, and of the way of life of the creatures that may be taken in the hunt? The wilderness has yet another use.
6:70
For often it has served the lands in place of walls, having mountains raised up to a great height, and ravines, and precipices.
6:71
What could one say of the herbs that spring up in them, rendering great service to bodies that are sick? But if of deserts and mountains the use is so great, and the supply of good things so abundant,
6:72
if you should come to the arable land and the level plains, consider how many springs of narratives you will behold.
6:73
因為正如在我們身上,有的部分是骨頭,有的是筋,有的是肉;
For just as in our body some parts are bones, others sinews, and others flesh;
6:74
so also in the earth, some parts are mountains, others ravines, and others rich and fertile regions.
6:75
我何必說這地,這樣浩大的一種元素呢?你若只願講論一棵樹,論它的形狀、它的用處、它的果子、它的葉子、它的時節,並其餘的一切,你便會看見那可述說之事是何等豐富;
Why do I speak of the earth, so vast an element? If you should be willing to tell of but a single tree, its form, its use, its fruit, its leaves, its season, and all the rest, you would see the narrative grow great;
6:76
if you should proceed in your discourse to the position of the mountains, to all the other things, to man himself and the fashioning of his very body, here again you would find countless seas of narratives.
6:77
Let us therefore dwell upon these things; from them will come to us the greatest delight, from them gain, from them an unspeakable wisdom.
6:78
Wherefore also, making this plain, he went on to add:
6:79
'I will be glad and rejoice in Thee.'
6:80
'I will sing praise to Thy name, O Most High.'
6:81
This is no small kind of wisdom, to find one's gladness in God.
6:82
For he who rejoices in God, as he ought, casts out every pleasure of this life.
6:83
And what is the meaning of 'I will be glad in Thee'? It is as if he said: Having such a Master, this is my delight, this is my exultation.
6:84
若有人以當知的方式認識這喜樂,他就再感覺不到別的喜樂了;
If anyone knows this delight as it ought to be known, he perceives no other delight;
6:85
for all the rest are but names of delight, empty of the reality.
6:86
這喜樂使人高舉超凡;
This delight lifts a man on high;
6:87
這喜樂使靈魂脫離肉體的轄制;
this delivers the soul from the body;
6:88
這喜樂使靈魂展翅飛向天上;
this gives it wings toward heaven;
6:89
這喜樂使人超越屬世的種種事物;
this raises it higher than the concerns of this life;
6:90
因為那些迷戀俊美之軀體的人,對人生中的一切都毫無知覺,只專注於一件事,就是所愛之人的容貌;
For if those who love beautiful bodies are aware of nothing in life, but are given over to one thing only, the sight of the beloved,
6:91
那麼,凡照著當有的方式愛神的人,此後對這人生中的事還會有什麼知覺呢,無論是可喜的還是可悲的?什麼都沒有;
then he who loves God as one ought to love will thereafter be sensible of what, whether of the agreeable things in this life, or of the painful? Of nothing;
6:92
but he will be exalted above all things, revelling in immortal joys, since He whom he loves is Himself immortal.
6:93
因為那些愛慕別的事物的人,很快便不由自主地陷入遺忘,因為他們所愛的都要朽壞凋殘;
For those who love other things are quickly and against their will turned to forgetfulness, since the objects of their love perish and wither away;
6:94
但這愛卻是無限的、無終止的,它有更大的喜樂,也有更豐盛的益處;
but this love is boundless, unending, having the greater delight and the fuller gain;
6:95
and again it cheers the one who loves by this very fact, that it is never dissolved.
6:96
'I will sing praise to Thy name, O Most High.'
6:97
This above all is the custom of one who loves.
6:98
因為凡熱戀的人,都向所愛的人歌唱;
For those who are in love sing songs to their beloved;
6:99
and even when they do not see them, they console themselves through their song.
6:100
先知也正是這樣行;
Even so, then, does the Prophet also do;
6:101
既然不能看見神,他就作歌頌讚祂,藉著詩歌與祂相交,燃起自己的渴慕,並彷彿親眼看見了祂;
since it is not possible to see God, he composes songs to Him, holding converse with Him through his songs, kindling his longing, and seeming even to behold Him;
6:102
or rather, through his singing and hymning he kindles longing in many.
6:103
因為正如那些相愛的人述說所愛之人的稱讚,並到處傳揚他們的名字;
For just as those who love utter the praises of their beloved and carry their names about with them,
6:104
so too does this one: 'I will sing praise to Thy name, O Most High.'
6:105
See how he suspended himself from the earth, and hung his whole being upon that One, dedicating himself to God.
6:106
因此,他不住地把祂的名反覆傳揚;
For this reason he continually turns His name about upon his lips;
6:107
for this too is the custom of one who loves.
6:108
'When mine enemy is turned back'
6:109
μου εἰς τὰ.
'backward, they shall be made weak and shall perish at Thy presence.'
6:110
Another version: 'When mine enemies are turned back, stumbling and perishing from before Thy face.'
6:111
這尤其是愛者所行的:不住地述說所蒙的恩惠,並以此為榮;
And this above all belongs to one who loves: to recount the benefits continually, and to glory in them;
6:112
for this comes from affection, and it in turn rekindles the affection.
6:113
And one would not err in saying that here he speaks also of spiritual enemies.
6:114
For these too are turned back, whenever they find a noble soul.
6:115
因為正如一支長矛落在盾牌上,若盾牌柔軟便被刺穿,但若堅硬而能抵擋,長矛就毫無所成,反倒矛尖折彎而墜落;
For just as a spear falling upon a shield cuts through it if it is soft, but if it be hard and resistant accomplishes nothing, but with its point bent back falls away;
6:116
even so does it happen in the case of the soul.
6:117
因為魔鬼所發的箭若遇見柔軟鬆弛的靈魂,便深深射入其中;
For if the darts sent by the devil find the soul soft and slack, they sink into its very depths;
6:118
but if they find it hard and stronger, he himself departs without success, and has wrought no dreadful thing against it.
6:119
And two gains come of it, or rather even three:
6:120
for he did the soul no harm, but rather made it stronger, while he himself has thereby become weaker.
6:121
Consider now how he proclaims the strength of God.
6:122
'They shall be weak,' he says, 'and shall perish at Your presence.'
6:123
Again, when you hear of 'presence' (face), suspect nothing bodily.
6:124
For here it signifies His working, His manifestation, the effortless ease of His strength.
6:125
'He who looks upon the earth, and makes it tremble;'
6:126
so then here too he says the same thing.
6:127
For His mere oversight suffices to destroy the wicked.
6:128
For if the presence of holy men makes the strength of demons weak, how much more the presence of God.
6:129
If His lightning, when it appears, strikes all with terror, consider that indestructible power of His: how it strikes with terror, how it destroys the wicked.
6:130
Have you seen a form of hymnody? Have you seen a manner of doxology, and how he recounts His power? And from this too he teaches no small doctrine of true wisdom by saying, 'I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.'
6:131
'When my enemy is turned back.'
6:132
What then is this? That not only in afflictions, but also in times of ease, he was sober and watchful.
6:133
因為許多人在被苦難壓低的時候,反而變得更加殷勤;
For many, when they are humbled by evils, become more earnest;
6:134
但一遇順境,卻變得更加懶散、更加鬆懈;
but by good things they become more slothful and more slack;
6:135
which is what he says further on concerning the Jews:
6:136
'When He slew them, then they sought Him.'
6:137
but he is sober even in prosperity, and is fully awake.
6:138
And this is no small thing toward true wisdom.
6:139
'For You have maintained my judgment and my cause.'
6:140
'You have sat on the throne, You who judge righteousness.'
6:141
'You have rebuked the nations, and the ungodly has perished.'
6:142
'You have blotted out his name for ever and ever.'
6:143
See again the true wisdom of the man: how he does not himself take vengeance on his enemies, but yields the retribution to God, keeping the apostolic precept:
6:144
And this is not the only thing one may see, but also that he was suffering these things unjustly.
6:145
For unless he had been suffering unjustly, God would not have taken up his cause.
6:146
'You have sat on the throne, You who judge righteousness.'
6:147
He speaks in a more human fashion, saying 'throne' and 'seat.'
6:148
But the phrase 'who judge righteousness' declares what is customary to God, and what is peculiar to His essence.
6:149
For of men one cannot say this.
6:150
因為即使他們是義人千萬遍,也絕不總是按公義審判,有時因無知,有時因怠惰,而不曉得什麼是公義的事;
For they do not by any means always judge righteousness, even if they be righteous ten thousand times over, being sometimes through ignorance, sometimes through slothfulness ignorant of what is just;
6:151
but God, being freed from all these things, both knowing and willing, brings forth a just verdict.
6:152
So then the phrase 'You have sat on the throne' means 'You have given judgment, You have taken up the cause, You have avenged.'
6:153
'You have rebuked the nations, and the ungodly has perished.'
6:154
Do you see how He has no need of weapons, nor of sword, nor of bows and arrows, but those things are spoken in a more human fashion?
6:155
For it suffices for God to rebuke, and those who are about to be punished perish.
6:156
But that you may learn His strength, listen also to what follows:
6:157
'Thou hast blotted out their name for ever, and unto ages of ages.'
6:158
Thou hast uprooted them, thou hast so utterly effaced them, that the very memory of them has perished.
6:159
'The swords of the enemy have failed utterly.'
6:160
What does this mean? That, having consumed his devices and his counsels, he says, thou hast made him destitute of his own weapons.
6:161
For such is the wrath of God:
6:162
it effaces all things and destroys them.
6:163
或者,正如另一位譯者所教導的,他用了「荒涼」一詞;
Or, as another interpreter teaches, having said 'Desolate';
6:164
that thou hast made desolate not only their cities, but even their wilderness places, and hast overthrown their cities.
6:165
For thus did the righteous man wage war, thus did he cast down his adversaries, not by employing weapons and spears, but by having the aid that comes from God.
6:166
Therefore his warfare was brilliant and illustrious, and his victory was won by main force.
6:167
'His memorial hath perished with a sound.'
6:168
What does 'with a sound' mean? Either he speaks of the utter ruin, or of the resounding magnitude of the evils.
6:169
And this too belongs to the providential care of God, that He does not do these things secretly, so that by the calamities of some others too may become better.
6:170
The word therefore signifies the conspicuousness of the destruction.
6:171
'And the Lord abideth for ever.'
6:172
因為「坐著」一詞,在許多處乃是指祂本體的常存不變;
For 'to sit' is in many places used of the permanence of His being;
6:173
as Jeremiah also declares, saying, 'Thou that sittest for ever.'
6:174
希伯來文在此處作「Yesheb(坐著)」。
And the Hebrew here says 'Yesheb.'
6:175
The prophet says this continually with regard to the destruction of men, showing the endlessness of His being, and that while the race of men is perishable,
6:176
yet His being and His majesty are without end.
6:177
And this he does by holding fear over them, so that they may tremble before Him on both accounts: both because of the greatness of His glory, and because of the imperishableness of His own being; both as one who abides for ever, and as one who ever punishes with exceeding severity.
6:178
But if it is needful to say something also according to a higher spiritual sense, we must not decline it.
6:179
因為有些事是可以按更深的意義去默想的;
For some things may be contemplated in a deeper sense;
6:180
但另有些事則必須僅按其字面所說的來理解;
but other things must be understood only as they have been stated;
6:181
例如這話:「起初,神創造天地」;
as the saying, 'In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth';
6:182
而另有些事則是與字面的用語相反的;
while other things are contrary to the words themselves;
6:183
as the saying, 'Let the hind of love, and the colt of thy graces, keep company with thee.'
6:184
'Let them be for thee alone, and let no stranger partake with thee.'
6:185
'Let the fountain of thy water be for thee alone.'
6:186
因為你若照字面所寫的去理解,不逃避那字句、反倒去追求其表面之意,那麼連一口水也不肯分給人,這乃是極大的無情;
For if thou shouldst understand what is literally set down, and shouldst not flee the word but pursue the meaning, it is a mark of great inhumanity not even to share water with anyone;
6:187
but here the discourse is concerning a wife, that one should enjoy her with chastity, calling her a fountain of good things, and a hind, on account of the purity of the marriage union.
6:188
但在有些情況下,人必須同時接受字面之意,以及藉此所表明的意義;
But in some cases one must accept both the literal sense, and that which is signified through it;
6:189
as is the case with, 'Even as Moses lifted up the serpent.'
6:190
For this too we must believe, that it happened; for indeed it happened; and yet what came of it was a type of Christ.
6:191
So here too one would not err in taking the things that are said with reference to the Jewish matters.
6:192
'Thou hast sat upon the throne, thou that judgest righteousness.'
6:193
「你曾斥責列國,惡人也就滅亡了;
'Thou hast rebuked the nations, and the ungodly hath perished;
6:194
thou hast blotted out his name for ever, and unto ages of ages.'
6:195
'The swords of the enemy have failed utterly, and thou hast overthrown their cities.'
6:196
'His memorial hath perished with a sound.'
6:197
For the calamity of the very men who crucified Christ is manifest throughout the whole inhabited world, their cities were destroyed, the devil's contrivances failed, and the providential care of Christ has laid hold of all things.
6:198
But leaving these matters to be fitted together by those who love learning, let us hold to the subject before us.
6:199
He has prepared His throne in judgment.
6:200
Another version reads, 'He has established it for judgment.'
6:201
And He Himself will judge the world in righteousness; He will judge the peoples in uprightness.
6:202
Do you see how little by little he leads his discourse upward? For since he had made mention of a throne, he shows the nature of that throne—not composed of wood, nor of any material, but of righteousness.
6:203
For it is founded upon righteousness, he says.
6:204
He will judge the world in righteousness.
6:205
He foretells both things present and things to come.
6:206
因為那普世的審判是存留在那將來的境地;
For the universal judgment is reserved for that other place;
6:207
but the partial judgment takes place even here.
6:208
For He works many things even now, so that the insensible may not suppose that things exist without providence.
6:209
But if not all receive their crowns here, do not marvel.
6:210
因為祂已預備了一個日子,在那日祂要審判世界;
For He has prepared a day on which He is about to judge the world;
6:211
but the present life is a stadium, a contest, and a wrestling-match.
6:212
正因如此,並非所有人都在此世得著他們所應得的;反而,賞賜是為那些行得正的人存留在那將來的境地,刑罰則為那些墮落的人存留在那裡;
For this reason not all receive their due here; rather, for those who do well the rewards are stored up in that other place, and for those who fall away the punishments;
6:213
but here there is forbearance and long-suffering, so that through repentance one may wash away his sins.
6:214
既然連兇殺之人,只要他仍在路途之上,便有能力改變,得以脫離刑罰;
Since even a murderer, so long as he is still on the road, has the power to change and to be delivered from punishment;
6:215
but once he has come under the sentence of the judge, thereafter there is the sword, the executioner, and the pits of doom.
6:216
只要我們還在這現今的生命中,就可能藉著改變自己的行為逃脫報應;
So long as we are in this present life, it is possible by changing our ways to escape the retribution;
6:217
but once we have departed there, we shall lament without remedy.
6:218
For He has prepared His throne in judgment.
6:219
但若有人照著上文所說的意思來理解「祂已預備了」這句話,他也不會有錯;
But if anyone should take the word 'He has prepared' in the way it has been stated, he will not err;
6:220
for all things are made ready—both the things of punishment, and the things of crowns, and the things of the sentence.
6:221
There is no delay, nor time, nor tardiness with God, when the living shall by no means precede those who have fallen asleep, even as Paul says, that 'We who are alive, who remain unto the coming of the Lord, shall by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.'
6:222
Behold the wisdom of the Prophet, how he speaks of things present, and how of things to come.
6:223
You have rebuked the nations, and the ungodly one has perished.
6:224
He has prepared His throne in judgment.
6:225
And He Himself will judge the world in righteousness.
6:226
And this he does, so that those who disbelieve in those future things may receive the proof from things present.
6:227
And the Lord became a refuge for the poor man.
6:228
Continually he calls himself both poor and needy, and that though he dwelt in royal palaces.
6:229
But I am poor and needy.
6:230
For he knew, he clearly knew, that all human things are feebler than a shadow, and that nothing is so truly our own as virtue, while all other things are like leaves attached from without.
6:231
For that virtue is truly our own is plain from this.
6:232
Wherever we go, we carry this about with us.
6:233
Therefore this is more truly our own, while all other things are far off.
6:234
Just as, then, we call our own the one who is near to us,
6:235
so also we call this virtue more truly our own than riches, since it is always near to us.
6:236
Consider for me also his thankfulness of heart and his philosophic soul.
6:237
For though he had horses, and armies, and ten thousand things beside, he let all those go and drew down to himself the help that comes from above, and to God he entrusted his deliverance.
6:238
因為他並沒有說:「軍隊成了你的避難所」,也沒有說錢財,也沒有說城牆;
For he did not say, 'My armies became a refuge for you,' nor 'my riches,' nor 'my walls';
6:239
but, 'The Lord became a refuge for the poor man.'
6:240
他說:「是他親自使我安穩無虞」;
'He himself,' he says, 'set me in safety';
6:241
for nothing is equal to this refuge, both in point of ease and of safety.
6:242
因為其他的避難所既可能遭人算計,也無法迅速地、隨手地尋得,反倒受制於時間、地點以及無數的境況;
For the other refuges may be plotted against, and it is not possible to find them quickly and ready at hand, but they are hindered by time and place and by ten thousand circumstances;
6:243
but this one you find near at hand, only if you seek it with exactness.
6:244
'For while you are yet speaking, I will say, Behold, I am here.'
6:245
And, 'I am a God who draws near, and not a God afar off.'
6:246
We have need therefore neither of running nor of a journey abroad, but even while sitting at home it is possible to draw to ourselves this refuge.
6:247
有時候他救人脫離危險;
And sometimes he delivers men out of their dangers;
6:248
but sometimes he even makes them themselves more illustrious and mightier than their enemies, and both of these at the fitting season.
6:249
For when those who enjoy his help are moderate, he grants both.
6:250
But if they do not possess this virtue in full measure, he stops at the one, so that by the addition
6:251
of the second they should come to madness.
6:252
為要使你明白這事往往叫人高抬自己以致狂妄,希西家就是因此被高舉起來;
And that you may learn that this often lifts men up to madness, Hezekiah was thereby exalted;
6:253
yet even so God did not overlook him, but since the prosperity of victory had exalted his mind, he brought upon him the correction that came through his sickness.
6:254
'A helper in good seasons, in afflictions.'
6:255
What is the meaning of 'In good seasons'? 'In due time,' he says, 'seasonably.'
6:256
He speaks of a twofold opportuneness, both that he helps, and that he helps in due season.
6:257
For here he calls affliction a 'good season.'
6:258
Why so? Because it is the mother of true wisdom, and it delivers a man from death, and above all it draws down the inclination of God.
6:259
那時,懶散被除去了,放縱也被除去了;
Then sloth is done away with, and dissipation;
6:260
then we become more earnest in our supplications.
6:261
And just as winter is the fitting season for the tilling of the earth,
6:262
so is affliction for the tending of the soul.
6:263
因為我們始終需要他的幫助,即使身處順境之時;
For we always have need of his help, even when we are in prosperity;
6:264
but then most of all, when we are in afflictions.
6:265
Here he also hinted at another thing:
6:266
that we too must be active and diligent.
6:267
For he who helps, helps the one who is working.
6:268
We must not therefore lie back in idleness, but must bring supplication, and almsgiving, and all that lies within our own power.
6:269
Since allies too give aid to those who are fighting, not to those who lie back and are idle.
6:270
If then you wish to enjoy the alliance of God, never betray what depends on your own self.
6:271
Thus also Job was helped, standing firm and contending like a wrestler.
6:272
Thus also the apostles, being active and diligent.
6:273
'And let those who know your name hope in you.'
6:274
The Prophet does this continually, turning his discourse from prayer to exhortation, being the common teacher of the whole world, and setting forth into the midst the treasure of true wisdom.
6:275
Well did he say, 'Let those who know your name hope.'
6:276
For those who know you, he says, and your succour and your alliance, have as a sufficient anchor the hope that rests upon you, a sufficient ally, and an unbreakable tower, which promises not only the loosing of their troubles, but also does not permit them to be thrown into confusion even while the troubles are present.
6:277
For the man who has freed himself from human concerns and has fastened himself to the hope that comes from above not only draws to himself the swiftest deliverance from his troubles, but even in the midst of those very troubles he is neither thrown into confusion nor disturbed, being aided by the hope of that anchor.
6:278
So it was, at any rate, that the three young men not only were delivered from the furnace, but did not even become disturbed while they lingered within the furnace.
6:279
For they knew the alliance that comes from God.
6:280
For this very reason another also says:
6:281
'And they shall trust'—which is to say, they shall be of good courage.
6:282
For far greater than the security that comes from the beginning of tumults is the security that comes from hope in God.
6:283
For the one is human, but the other is divine and invincible.
6:284
Since he said that He became a helper, that He became a refuge, he now shows also in what way this comes to pass.
6:285
How, then, does it come to pass? When we continue steadfastly hoping in Him.
6:286
But if He does not immediately dissolve your troubles, this too comes to pass for the sake of your testing.
6:287
因為正如祂本能夠不容患難臨到你,卻仍容許它們臨到,為要使你更加剛強堅定;
For just as, being able not to permit trials to come upon you, He permits them, that He may make you more steadfast;
6:288
so also, being able to dissolve them from the very outset, He delays and again defers, straining tight your vigour, exercising your hope, making your disposition toward Him more earnest; and He neither permits us to be forever afflicted, lest we grow utterly weary, nor forever at ease, lest we sink into slackness.
6:289
For You have not forsaken those who seek You, O Lord.
6:290
Another rendering: For You did not forsake.
6:291
So also another says: 'Look back to the generations of old, and see: who ever hoped upon the Lord and was put to shame? Or who ever called upon Him, and He forsook him?' And how, one asks, is God to be sought, seeing that He is everywhere? With diligence and eagerness, and by freeing oneself from all the affairs of this life.
6:292
For often, though we have many things before our eyes and in our hands, we do not know it, but go about searching for what we already hold fast, whenever the mind is turned toward something else.
6:293
How, then, is it possible to seek God? When we strain our mind toward Him, when we free ourselves from the affairs of this life.
6:294
For indeed the one who seeks, casting all things out of his soul, comes to that which is sought.
6:295
And one must not merely seek, but also seek diligently.
6:296
The one who seeks diligently does not seek by himself alone, but also takes others as helpers, so as to find what is sought.
6:297
然而在今生的事上,我們往往尋找卻尋不著;
But in the affairs of this life we have often sought and yet not found;
6:298
in spiritual things, however, this cannot be, but it is altogether necessary that the one who seeks should find.
6:299
因為我們只要一起身出去尋求,神就不容我們長久勞苦操勞;
For if we but go forth to seek, God does not permit us to labour hard for long;
6:300
Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion.
6:301
Declare among the nations His doings.
6:302
Another renders it: Among the peoples His devices.
6:303
What are you saying? He whose throne is heaven and whose footstool is the earth, in whose hand are the ends of the earth—does this One dwell in Zion? Yes.
6:304
因為此處所說的「居住」,並非指祂被圈限——因祂的威嚴是無邊無際的——乃是指祂與那地方的親近,以及祂視之為自己所屬之地,因為祂藉這樣的俯就吸引猶太人歸向自己;
For by 'dwelling' here he does not mean His being enclosed—for His majesty is boundless—but rather His intimate closeness to the place, and His holding it as His own, because through this condescension He drew the Jews toward Himself;
6:305
since a house too is so called with regard to us, because of our holding it as our own.
6:306
And He is said to dwell in us as well—not as being contained by us, but as holding us as His own.
6:307
And Zion, by way of a higher interpretation, is called the Church.
6:308
For 'you have come to Mount Zion, and to the Church of the firstborn.'
6:309
And fittingly the Church is called a mountain, because of its firmness, and steadfastness, and immovability.
6:310
For just as it is impossible to shake a mountain, so also is it impossible to shake the Church of God.
6:311
Declare among the nations His doings.
6:312
He wishes them to be heralds of the benefactions of God, and never to conceal His benefactions.
6:313
And this He seeks everywhere, both for the sake of those who speak and for the sake of those who hear.
6:314
For there is gain both for these and for those, if they give heed.
6:315
For He who requires their blood has remembered.
6:316
Do you see what sort of 'doings' he means? The benefactions.
6:317
Here too he hints at a great doctrine:
6:318
namely, that murder is not a thing dared with impunity, but is by all means avenged.
6:319
This Moses also shows in Genesis, when he says:
6:320
This is a proof of his boundless providence, of his far-reaching care.
6:321
但你若見祂沒有立刻、緊隨著惡行就施行追討,不要以為希奇;
But if he does not exact the penalty at once, on the very heels of the deed, do not be amazed;
6:322
for he gives to sinners an occasion for repentance.
6:323
He has not forgotten the cry of the poor.
6:324
See again the poor held in high esteem.
6:325
But he does not simply say the poor; rather he means those who are poor in spirit, even as Christ says:
6:326
For these above all are heard when they pray, namely, those who are humble in heart and contrite.
6:327
And here he sets down two things: prayer and humility of mind.
6:328
'Upon whom shall I look,' he says, 'but upon him who is humble and quiet, and who trembles at my words?' And everywhere humility is found to be the vehicle of prayer.
6:329
For the Lord is near to those who are contrite in heart.
6:330
Thus he who prays must above all be freed from inflammation of the soul, which Paul also requires when he says:
6:331
Without wrath and disputing.
6:332
Well did he say, 'The cry of the poor,' calling 'cry' the disposition of the mind, not the loudness of the voice;
6:333
and by saying 'He has not forgotten,' he made clear that they were continually calling out, and did not obtain their request at the very outset.
6:334
那麼他所說的究竟是甚麼意思呢?不要以為神是忘記了,以致祂沒有施行追討;
What then is it that he means? Do not think that God had forgotten, and that for this reason he did not exact vengeance;
6:335
因為即使無人懇求,尋察這等事本是祂自己分內之事;
for it is his own proper work to seek out such things even when no one entreats him;
6:336
but when they do entreat, and those who entreat are humble, then much more so.
6:337
Have mercy on me, O Lord; behold my affliction from my enemies.
6:338
You who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare all your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion.
6:339
See him continually fixed upon prayer.
6:340
For even after being delivered from his troubles and having come into safety, he does not cease from praying again, saying:
6:341
Have mercy on me, entreating him also for things to come.
6:342
For we always need the providence of God, but especially in the deliverance from evils.
6:343
因為接續著前一場爭戰,還有一場比它更艱難的爭戰,就是怠惰之戰、狂妄自負之戰;
For another war succeeds the former one, more grievous than it: the war of sloth, the war of presumption;
6:344
and then the devil blows more violently.
6:345
Therefore especially after being delivered from evils, we need that support, so that we may bear our prosperity with ease.
6:346
Since the Jews too, when they had been delivered from the Egyptians, were in a grievous war, with presumption and with sloth.
6:347
Then indeed above all they perished, being unable to marshal themselves well.
6:348
For since they stood nobly firm neither against gluttony nor against faintheartedness, but emulated the passions of the Egyptians, these things destroyed them.
6:349
And David also, in the time of Saul, when he had been delivered from his troubles and from the rest of his enemies, and had come to enjoy relief, underwent a more grievous war, that of unbridled desire, which indeed chastised him the more severely.
6:350
Wherefore we ought above all to be afraid at that very time, when we have been delivered from troubles.
6:351
因為正如被捆綁的野獸,我們不像牠被放開時那樣懼怕;
For just as we do not so greatly fear a wild beast that is bound as one that has been set loose,
6:352
照樣,我們在患難之中也不必那樣懼怕惡念;
so too we ought not to dread wickedness so much in the time of tribulation;
6:353
因為那時它被憂愁和其他的鎖鏈捆住了;
for then it is bound by dejection and by the other bonds;
6:354
but after the relief, then we ought to be afraid.
6:355
For this very reason you will often see prosperity working greater harms than adversities.
6:356
Thus Hezekiah too, after his triumph, was on the point of perishing.
6:357
Wherefore this man too says in another place:
6:358
'It is good for me that You have humbled me.'
6:359
And once again, after his deliverance, he seeks God's mercy; and he sets forth as a claim upon that mercy the fact that he has suffered ill.
6:360
'Behold my humiliation at the hands of my enemies,'
6:361
'You who lift me up from the gates of death.'
6:362
'For to my protector and guardian I flee for refuge, to Him who ever stretches out His hand to me.'
6:363
Do you see him, in the very act of asking for things to come, becoming thankful for things past, and speaking of a twofold benefit? For he did not say, 'He who delivers me from the gates of death,' but, 'He who lifts me up.'
6:364
For God's beneficence did not stop merely at loosing him from his troubles, but it also made men wondrous, glorious, more illustrious, and exalted.
6:365
And he did not say, 'From the gate,' but, 'From the gates,' thus indicating the multitude of his dangers.
6:366
'That I may declare all Your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion.'
6:367
That which he exhorted others to do, this he himself also does:
6:368
'For declare,' he says, 'among the nations His doings.'
6:369
This I too will now do:
6:370
and I will not do it in an ordinary way, in the presence of one, or two, or three, but in the midst of a great theatre.
6:371
'I will rejoice in Your salvation.'
6:372
This is my crown, this is my diadem: to set up a trophy through You, to enjoy salvation through You.
6:373
So then let us too not seek by all means to be saved, nor by every means to be delivered from our troubles, but according to God's will.
6:374
I say this because of those who resort to incantations in their sicknesses, and who seek out other sorceries for the relief of their infirmity.
6:375
For this is not to be saved, but to be destroyed.
6:376
For the greatest salvation is to be saved through God.
6:377
'The nations are sunk down in the corruption which they made.'
6:378
他所說的「敗壞」,指的就是惡;
By 'corruption' he means wickedness;
6:379
for nothing corrupts so much as wickedness.
6:380
For nothing is weaker than the wicked man.
6:381
他被自己的兵器所擒獲,正如鐵被鏽所蝕,羊毛被蛀蟲所毀;
He is caught by his own weapons, just as iron is consumed by rust, and wool by the moth;
6:382
so too is the wicked man consumed by his own wickedness.
6:383
So that even before the punishment which comes from God, wickedness itself exacts the penalty from the one who works it.
6:384
For since he had discoursed much concerning the judgment above and concerning God's decisive influence, and yet this does not follow hard on the heels of sin, but often delays and is deferred, and this makes the many more careless, he shows that punishment stands at the very doors, and that the wicked endure it, even as Paul also says:
6:385
'And receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due.'
6:386
And observe how precisely he uses his words.
6:387
that is to say, he was held fast by main force; the plot became inescapable for him.
6:388
'In this snare which they hid, their own foot was caught.'
6:389
'With bonds that cannot be loosed,' he says, 'the wicked are fettered.'
6:390
These things came to pass in the case of the apostles and of the Jews.
6:391
For when they warred against the apostles, they did those men no harm at all, but involved themselves in countless evils, falling away from their city, their freedom, and everything else; and while the preaching increased, those who plotted against it were undone.
6:392
那些把三個少年人扔進巴比倫火窰的人,自己反倒被火窰所吞噬;
And those who cast the three children into the Babylonian furnace were themselves in turn seized by it;
6:393
which indeed also came to pass in the case of Daniel.
6:394
然而在但以理的事上,這樣的結局是理所當然的,因為正是他們自己把他扔進去的;
But in Daniel's case this happened with good reason, for they themselves had cast him in;
6:395
but in the case of the three children, why on earth, when it was the king who sinned, are these men who stood before the furnace the ones punished? Because these men who were burned up had themselves served the tyrant's command and had worshipped the golden image.
6:396
See how he showed their guilt to be unspeakable.
6:397
For since what was being done was full of shame, on this account they hide it and try to escape notice.
6:398
The Lord is made known in executing judgments.
6:399
另一譯本作:祂施行審判,就被人認識;
Another version has: He was made known in that He executed judgment;
6:400
that is, in punishing, in avenging, in bringing men to account.
6:401
你看見從懲罰而來的另一種恩惠嗎?他說,這不僅使受罰的人更加殷勤,也使那認識神的道理發出光輝;
Do you see another kind of beneficence that comes from punishment? For not only, he says, does it make those who are punished more earnest, but it also causes the word of the knowledge of God Himself to shine forth;
6:402
and one might see Him turning men back to Himself more effectively from this quarter.
6:403
At any rate, when He allowed the herd of swine to be carried down the steep places and to be drowned in the sea, then above all were they astounded.
6:404
And in the Old Testament likewise the Jews: When He slew them, then they sought Him out, as the Prophet says.
6:405
And why then does He not do this continually rather than otherwise? Because He does not wish the works of virtue to be accomplished by compulsion, but rather by free choice, and men to be set right by benefaction rather than by punishment.
6:406
And how much better, he says, is it to be good by necessity than evil by choice? It is not really good to be good by necessity.
6:407
因為那被捆綁而成為善的人,不會永遠為善,乃是一旦脫離了那強迫,就必回到惡裡去;
For he who becomes good by constraint will not always remain good, but once freed from the necessity, he will return to wickedness;
6:408
but he who is trained so as to become good by choice, once he has become so, remains firm.
6:409
In the works of his own hands the sinner is snared.
6:410
He did not say in the hands of God, but in the hands of the sinner.
6:411
Do you see how he varies the discourse, both bringing in the punishment from above and inflicting the penalty that arises from wickedness itself? How, the punishment from above? The Lord, he says, is made known in executing judgments.
6:412
How, the penalty from wickedness itself? The nations are sunk down in the corruption which they made.
6:413
And again, the penalty that arises from their own depravity:
6:414
In the works of his own hands the sinner is snared.
6:415
因為他既非單指從神而來的懲罰,因這懲罰往往遲延、緩慢而至;
For he speaks neither of the punishment from God alone, since it is often delayed and slow in coming;
6:416
也非單指從惡而來的刑罰,因為許多人甚至樂在其中、流連忘返;
nor of the penalty from wickedness alone, since many even take delight and linger in it;
6:417
but he secures his discourse on both sides.
6:418
In the works of his own hands he is snared.
6:419
所以,當你設下詭計陷害人的時候,不要以為你是在為別人設計機關;
Therefore do not suppose that you are contriving your schemes against another when you plot;
6:420
for it is against yourself that you are weaving the nets.
6:421
Let the sinners be turned back into hell, all the nations that forget God.
6:422
Again he dwells on the same points, showing that wickedness has punishment allotted to it, and that impiety gives birth to death, and sin to perils.
6:423
For the poor shall not be forgotten to the end, the patient endurance of the needy shall not perish to the end.
6:424
For the expectation of the meek shall not perish to the end.
6:425
Well did he say, To the end, showing that one does not always seek relief.
6:426
For where would the fruits of endurance be displayed, if there were always to be relief? And what he means is something of this sort:
6:427
The wicked shall pay the penalty, and shall suffer the uttermost things.
6:428
For God will not endure that those who are wronged should for ever be subject to plots against them.
6:429
Hereby he both comforts these and puts fear into those others, and he shows the loving-kindness of God, that even His delay makes the one sort more approved, and draws the other sort to repentance.
6:430
再看那窮乏人如何得蒙美好的稱許;
See again the poor being held in high esteem;
6:431
poor not simply so called, but those who are contrite in heart.
6:432
因為這等人尤其也是最適於忍耐的;
For these especially are also well fitted for endurance;
6:433
or rather, these things build up one another, humility building up endurance, and endurance building up humility.
6:434
And how is humility poverty? We shall say this, that it is better fitted for virtue.
6:435
因為富足的人心煩意亂,且常受攪擾;
For the rich man is distracted and troubled;
6:436
but the poor man bears everything easily, being often exercised by poverty as in a wrestling-school.
6:437
For this reason Christ also said that it is hard for one with riches to enter into the kingdom.
6:438
What does it mean, 'The patience of the poor shall not perish for ever'? Never, he says, but assuredly it shall receive its own fruit.
6:439
Which is not so in the affairs of this life; rather, one often falls short of the end, the labours being lost.
6:440
因為農夫在等待,商人也在等待;
For indeed both the farmer waits, and the merchant;
6:441
yet often, through the inconstancy of the weather, both fall short of the fruit of their labours.
6:442
But with God this is not so; rather, it is altogether necessary that one enjoy the end.
6:443
And this is no small thing toward the ground of comfort—to be always confident concerning the end.
6:444
'Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail.'
6:445
'Let the nations be judged before you.'
6:446
Another version has: 'And before your face.'
6:447
Having spoken of the wickedness that holds sway over the greater part of mankind, and having recounted their villainy, their plunderings, their acts of greed, their murders, he calls upon God for the help of those who are wronged.
6:448
For such are the tender affections of the saints: not to care only for their own concerns, but, as though for a single household—the whole inhabited world—or for one body—the multitude of mankind—so to call upon God.
6:449
'Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail.'
6:450
But what does 'Arise, O Lord' mean? Go forth, he says; give aid; punish those who do wrong.
6:451
他用這樸素的字眼是好的,說:「求你起來」,又說:「不容人得勝」;
And well did he use bare terms, saying, 'Arise,' and, 'Let not man prevail;'
6:452
so as to show that man is a paltry thing, sprung from earth, dust and ashes.
6:453
'Let the nations be judged before you.'
6:454
What is this? Let them pay the penalty, he says, for their sins.
6:455
他們並沒有因你的恆久忍耐而變得更好;
They have not become better through your long-suffering;
6:456
demand an accounting for the things they have dared to do.
6:457
'Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them.'
6:458
'Let the nations know that they are but men.'
6:459
What does 'Appoint a lawgiver over them' mean? Since, he says, they do all things as though under no law, unwilling to pay any penalty, go forth, and let punishment come upon them in place of admonition.
6:460
This another also declared, saying, 'Appoint, O Lord, a terror over them.'
6:461
See how he does not seek their punishment, but their admonition and correction, and that they should not live lawlessly.
6:462
因為他說,那刑罰對他們必成為勸誡的代替;
For the punishment shall be to them, he says, in place of admonition;
6:463
and not to them alone, but to others also.
6:464
And that you may learn how great the gain is, and how it checks the disease, hear what follows.
6:465
'Let the nations know,' he says, 'that they are but men.'
6:466
And what he means is this:
6:467
Many have lost even this: they have forgotten their nature, they have run aground into madness, they have been ignorant of themselves.
6:468
And well did he add the word 'Always,' to show that it is not in adversities only, but also in prosperity.
6:469
For if you chastise them now, while their fear is at its height and the memory of the dreadful things that have befallen them is fresh, then even if they come into prosperity, they will know their own nature.
6:470
Do you see how he makes his supplication on their behalf, and counts it worthy that their madness be corrected? For to be ignorant of oneself is worse than the utmost madness and frenzy.
6:471
for the one is a disease of necessity, but the other of a corrupted will.
6:472
「耶和華啊,你為甚麼站在遠處?在急難的時候,在患難之中,為甚麼掩面不顧呢?」先知說這些話,是代表那些受患難之人的口,是懇求哀告,並非控訴;
'Why, O Lord, do you stand afar off, do you overlook us in seasons of need, in tribulations?' These things the Prophet says, in the person of those in tribulation, entreating and beseeching, not accusing;
6:473
因為許多受患難的人,因著自己的痛苦,就求那審判在合宜的時候之前臨到;
since many of those in tribulation, on account of their pain, deem it right that judgment should come before the fitting time;
6:474
正如那些接受手術的人,在切割尚未完全完成之前,就懇求醫生把手縮回去;
just as those undergoing surgery, before the incision is fully completed, beseech the physician to withdraw his hand;
6:475
asking a favour that is to their hurt, and suffering this because they cannot bear the pains.
6:476
And often they cry out to the physicians, 'You have tormented me, you have destroyed me, you have killed me;'
6:477
But these are not the words of a deliberate mind, but of anguish.
6:478
Thus indeed do many of the faint-hearted speak amid their afflictions, unable to bear their sufferings.
6:479
And Zephaniah too employs a saying of this kind.
6:480
但這些乃是屬於舊約的事,那時的競技場尚有分寸;
But these things belong to the Old Testament, when the contests were of a measured kind;
6:481
such things, however, are far removed from the philosophy of the New Testament.
6:482
'While the ungodly man behaves proudly, the poor man is set ablaze;'
6:483
'they are taken in the devices which they have imagined.'
6:484
'Because the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul, and the one who does wrong is blessed.'
6:485
'The sinner has provoked the Lord.'
6:486
先知披上懇求者的樣式,為受欺壓的人代求,並述說臨到他們的苦難,那正是人性軟弱所有的;
The Prophet, clothing himself in the guise of a suppliant and interceding on behalf of those who are wronged, tells also of the sufferings that have befallen them, which belong to human weakness;
6:487
namely, that before any chastisement or retribution comes, the one who is wronged already grieves, being unable to endure the prosperity of the wicked.
6:488
And this too is no small punishment.
6:489
接著他求告,願他們受到應得的報應,願他們的詭計反歸到自己身上;
Then he asks that they may pay the penalty, and that their plots may be turned back upon themselves;
6:490
and he speaks of an intolerable kind of wickedness.
6:491
What sort is this then? 'That the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul.'
6:492
For the very things at which he ought to hide his face, the very things, he says, of which he ought to be ashamed, for these he is admired and praised.
6:493
And how could there any longer be a cure for this, when wickedness itself is praised? For indeed this happens even now.
6:494
有人因是有權勢的人而受人稱羨;
One man is admired as a man of power;
6:495
有人因向仇敵報復而受人稱羨;
another, as one who takes vengeance on his enemies;
6:496
有人因奪取了眾人的財物而被視為精明;
another, as a prudent man, because he has gathered together the goods of everyone;
6:497
甚至當他毀了自己的時候,人還稱讚他;
and even when he has ruined himself, they praise him;
6:498
and there is among them no discourse about spiritual things.
6:499
從沒有人會迅速稱讚那不營營逐利的人,也沒有人稱讚那甘心貧窮的人;
Nowhere is the man free of worldly business quickly praised, nor the lover of poverty;
6:500
but rather the money-maker, the huckster, the flatterer, the man who submits to servile ministrations for the sake of nothing useful.
6:501
These things the Prophet laments, that wickedness has so prevailed as even to preen itself and speak with boldness, and, what is more grievous still, that it is not ashamed, and not only praises itself for what is done, but has others also as its praisers.
6:502
What could be worse than this madness? 'The sinner has provoked the Lord.'
6:503
Another translator says: 'Because the lawless man, having praised according to the desire of his soul, and the covetous man, having blessed himself, has provoked the Lord.'
6:504
'When his rage is exalted, he does not seek Him out.'
6:505
Another: 'Because he sang praise according to the longing of his soul, and the covetous man, having blessed himself, reviled the Lord.'
6:506
'The ungodly man, in the loftiness of his rage, will surely not seek Him out.'
6:507
But the Seventy render it: 'The sinner has provoked the Lord;'
6:508
'according to the greatness of his wrath he will not seek Him out.'
6:509
Do you see to what point the works of wickedness have advanced? Why do I say, he asks, that he grieves the poor? He provokes God Himself.
6:510
'And according to the greatness of his wrath he will not seek Him out,' that is, God, he says.
6:511
And another shows that this refers to the ungodly man, saying, 'Of his loftiness,' that is, of his senseless folly and his arrogance.
6:512
Do you see the intensity of the madness, and its corruption? He is a foe and enemy toward his own kinsmen, estranged from virtue, a lover and praiser of wickedness.
6:513
And well did another say: 'God is not in all his thoughts;'
6:514
making clear that he does not seek out God, because he is filled with darkness, because he does not keep the fear of Him before his eyes.
6:515
But just as the rheum darkens the pupil of the eye, so wickedness darkens the mind, and carries it down over precipices.
6:516
'God is not before him.'
6:517
Another translator has it: 'Through all his devices.'
6:518
His ways are profaned at every season; your judgments are taken away
6:519
from before his face.
6:520
Another has it: 'Your judgment is removed.'
6:521
Do you see the fruit of wickedness? His light is quenched, his reasonings are blinded, he is given over a captive to depravity.
6:522
因為正如瞎了眼的人不斷跌入坑中,這人也是如此;既然他眼前沒有神的敬畏,他便終其一生都活在惡中;
For just as the man who has been blinded falls continually into pits, so too does this man; since he has not the fear of God before his eyes, he spends his whole life in wickedness;
6:523
他並非時而行善、時而行惡,而是始終在惡中,既不記念地獄,也不記念將來的審判,也不記念那要交的帳;
not now in virtue and now in wickedness, but always in wickedness; and he remembers neither hell, nor the judgment to come, nor the reckoning to be rendered;
6:524
but having cast off all these aids like a bridle, he is given over, like a ship without ballast, to wicked winds and savage waves, with none to guide his understanding.
6:525
Do you see the wicked man undergoing his punishment in his very wickedness? For what is more grievous than an unbridled horse, than a ship without ballast, than a man who has been blinded? (verse 10)
6:526
But more wretched than all of these is the man who lives in wickedness, who has quenched the light that comes from the fear of God, and has been given over as a captive.
6:527
He shall have dominion over all his enemies.
6:528
For he has said in his heart:
6:529
I shall not be moved from generation to generation, being without evil.
6:530
Another has it: 'He blows away all his enemies, saying in his heart:'
6:531
I shall not be overthrown from generation to generation.
6:532
Do you see the madness? Do you see the unspeakable ruin? Do you see the destruction growing little by little? Do you see the things counted blessed among the foolish, though laden with much misery, and how he is sinking down? He is praised in his sins, he is blessed in his iniquities.
6:533
This is the first pit, and it is enough to break the neck of the man who does not take heed.
6:534
Wherefore we ought rather to welcome those who blame and correct us, than those who praise and flatter us to our destruction.
6:535
因為這等人敗壞那些愚鈍的人,把他們推向更大的惡;
For these men corrupt the dull-witted, and thrust them on to greater wickedness;
6:536
just as, having puffed up this sinner too, they trained him into folly.
6:537
Wherefore Paul also says this very thing to the Corinthians concerning the man who had committed fornication:
6:538
And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned.
6:539
The one who sins ought to be mourned over much, not praised.
6:540
你看見這惡的乖謬了嗎?他非但不被責備,反倒受人喝采?於是,他因自己的愚妄與眾人的稱讚,愈發加增他的邪惡,忘了神的敬畏和祂的審判;
Do you see the perversity of wickedness, that not only is he not accused, but he is even applauded? Hence, from his own folly and from the praises, he intensified his depravity; he forgot the fear of God and His judgments;
6:541
hence he forgot even his own nature.
6:542
For the man who forgets the judgments of God comes in time to be ignorant even of himself.
6:543
I shall not be moved from generation to generation, but shall be without evil.
6:544
What is more senseless than this way of thinking, that a man—being mortal and perishable, entangled in transient affairs and subject to countless changes—should imagine such things? And whence does this arise? From folly.
6:545
For whenever a foolish man enjoys great prosperity, and prevails over his enemies, and is praised and admired, he becomes the most wretched of all.
6:546
For by not expecting any change, he neither bears his prosperity with self-restraint, and when he falls into adversity—being untrained and unpractised—he is thrown into confusion and turmoil.
6:547
反倒是那智慧人,即便在順境中,也天天預料逆境的臨到;
but rather, even in prosperity, he expected adversity each day;
6:548
'For the fear that I feared has come upon me, and that which I dreaded has befallen me.'
6:549
'Neither was I at peace, nor was I quiet, nor did I rest;'
6:550
'Remember the time of famine in the time of plenty, and poverty and want in the day of wealth.'
6:551
然而這人已徹底敗壞,不思想人間的事,反倒因自己的亨通,以為凡事對他都是不可動搖的;
But this man, being utterly corrupted, does not consider human affairs, but supposes, on account of his prosperity, that things are immovable for him;
6:552
which is the ground of the utmost folly and corruption, and the occasion of utter destruction.
6:553
Do not, then, count blessed those who grow rich, those who get the better of their enemies, those who are praised for these things.
6:554
For these are great pits and precipices to those who do not take heed, hurling them down to the very depth of impiety.
6:555
His mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit.
6:556
Under his tongue are toil and trouble.
6:557
He sitteth in ambush with the rich in secret places, to slay the innocent.
6:558
Another version: Lying in wait beside the courts.
6:559
His eyes are fixed upon the poor man.
6:560
He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den.
6:561
Another version: As within his enclosure.
6:562
He lieth in wait to catch the poor; he doth catch the poor when he draweth him into his net.
6:563
In his snare he will bring him low.
6:564
He will crouch and fall, when he hath gained the mastery over the poor.
6:565
Another version: But he that is crushed shall be bowed down, when he falleth upon the weak with his mighty ones.
6:566
Dost thou see that the man himself has become a wild beast? For the Prophet describes him as though depicting a beast, and thus discourses concerning him, parading forth his deceits, his ambushes, and his plots.
6:567
What could be more wretched than such a man, and what more destitute, when he covets the goods of the poor? Shall we then, tell me, call this man rich? Then we must call the thief and the burglar rich as well.
6:568
For what does it matter that he does not break into courts of justice? What does it matter that he does not come by night, but with deceit quenches the light of the judge? What does it matter that he attacks not when men sleep, but when all are wide awake? For such a man is only the more shameless.
6:569
Indeed, of robbers too, the laws punish more severely those who steal by day.
6:570
你看見他的貧窮了嗎?你看見他的殘暴了嗎?說他貧窮,是因為他貪圖窮人的財物;
Hast thou seen his poverty? Hast thou seen his savagery? His poverty, in that he covets the possessions of the poor;
6:571
his savagery, in that he is not even moved to compassion by their misfortune, but the very poverty which ought to be pitied and set right, this he grinds down all the more.
6:572
然而,他行這些事並非不受懲罰的;
Yet nevertheless he does not work these things unpunished;
6:573
乃是當他得勝之時,當他似乎已佔上風之時,當他自以為不可戰勝之時,那時他必滅亡;
but when he has prevailed, when he seems to have gained the upper hand, when he supposes himself to be invincible, then shall he perish;
6:574
so that thereby the resourcefulness of God may be made manifest, and the patient endurance of the poor, and this man's incorrigibility, and the forbearance of God's long-suffering.
6:575
正因如此,刑罰並不立刻緊隨其後,因為神藉著祂的恆久忍耐呼召他悔改;
For this reason justice does not follow hard upon his heels, since God through His long-suffering calls him to repentance;
6:576
but when he gains nothing from that long-suffering, then God admonishes him through punishment.
6:577
因為這些人雖然受了不公的對待,卻絲毫未受損害;
For these men, though they were wronged, suffered no harm;
6:578
nay, they became both better and more illustrious through their affliction;
6:579
至於神,則顯明了祂自己的恆久忍耐,容忍了他、寬容了他的惡行,並且在祂的恆久忍耐之外,也顯出祂的大能與豐富的方策;
while God displayed His own long-suffering, bearing with him and enduring his malice, and together with His long-suffering both His might and His abundant resource;
6:580
因為正是當祂彷彿比祂自己更有能力之時,祂便勝過了他;
for it is when He is mightier than Himself, so to speak, that He gains the victory over him;
6:581
but this man, remaining incorrigible, pays the uttermost penalty.
6:582
And this is no small lesson in self-restraint for those who prosper.
6:583
Therefore, when thou hast prevailed over thine enemies and all things go for thee with a fair wind, be not confident to live in wickedness, but rather fear all the more.
6:584
For thy wickedness increases, while the grounds of thy defence are taken away, and the means of pardon are cut off from thee, so long as thou remainest wicked.
6:585
For he hath said in his heart:
6:586
He hath turned away his face, that he may never see.
6:587
See to what an abyss of destruction he goes down, what manner of doctrines he gathers together—doctrines which for very shamelessness he dares not utter openly, yet turns over within himself, warring against the truth, and casting into shadow things clearer than the sun, because of the blindness of his own understanding.
6:588
Arise, O Lord my God; let Thy hand be lifted up.
6:589
Another version: Lift up Thy hand.
6:590
For what cause hath the ungodly provoked God? For he hath said in his heart:
6:591
Thou seest it; for Thou dost consider trouble and wrath, to deliver him into Thy hands.
6:592
Another version: Thou hast seen that Thou wilt look upon trouble and provocation, to give with Thy hand.
6:593
Another version: That they may be delivered into Thy hands.
6:594
那不法的人,那擄掠的人,那貪得無厭的人,確實說出這樣的話,彷彿他永不必受刑罰;
The transgressor indeed says these things—he who plunders, he who is grasping—as though he would never pay the penalty;
6:595
but the Prophet, refuting his doctrines, fulfils his discourse concerning the long-suffering of God.
6:596
He hath turned away his face, that he may never see.
6:597
Thou seest, and dost consider, and art longsuffering, until they themselves fall into thy hands.
6:598
What does this mean, 'Until they themselves be given into thy hands'? He has spoken in a manner more suited to human understanding.
6:599
Thou dost wait, thou dost bear with evil, so that by the excess of their wickedness they may be delivered up.
6:600
因為祢從起初就有能力擒拿並制伏他們;
For thou art able, even from the very beginning, to seize and to subdue them;
6:601
but unspeakable is the ocean of thy forbearance, in that thou dost behold them, and yet dost not proceed against them, but dost await their repentance.
6:602
But if they are unwilling, then thou dost punish, when they gain nothing from thy longsuffering.
6:603
For that he holds the wronged in great account, hear how he establishes this very thing in what follows:
6:604
'To thee is the poor man left; thou wast a helper to the orphan.'
6:605
And what he says is of this sort:
6:606
This is thy work, this is thy peculiar office.
6:607
And he would not have abandoned what is his own, and betrayed it.
6:608
因為正如建造是工匠的本分,把船駛正是舵手的本分,發光是太陽的本分;
For as it belongs to the craftsman to build, and to the pilot to steer the vessel straight, and to the sun to give light;
6:609
so also is it thine to stand as protector over orphans, and to stretch out a hand to the poor.
6:610
No one is so great a protector of these as thou, but thou alone.
6:611
For the word 'is left' sets this very thing before us.
6:612
No other, he says, but thou alone art the protector of orphans and of the poor.
6:613
'Break thou the arm of the sinner and the wicked man.'
6:614
'His sin shall be sought out, and it shall not be found because of it.'
6:615
Another translator: 'Let his impiety be sought out, that he himself may not be found.'
6:616
他所求的並非單單要惡人被打斷,乃是要他的力量、他的權勢、以及助長他惡行的燃料被打斷;
He does not simply ask that the sinner be broken, but his strength, his power, the fuel of his wickedness;
6:617
then he asks that the man render account, and give a reckoning of the things he has done; and, showing the magnitude of the injustice, he says:
6:618
If this comes to pass, he will not even be able to stand, nor will he appear, but he will perish, be gone, be utterly rooted out and wiped away, when the things he has done are examined.
6:619
Let no one, then, bewail his orphanhood; let no one bewail his poverty.
6:620
For the more these afflictions are intensified, so much the more will the help of God be increased.
6:621
Let no one be high-minded on account of power, nor be puffed up.
6:622
For this ground is treacherous and precipitous, and it overturns with great ease those who are not on their guard.
6:623
'The Lord shall reign unto the age, and unto the age of the age.'
6:624
Here he replies to those who are troubled and disturbed because those who sin do not straightway pay the penalty.
6:625
Why, he says, art thou afraid? Why art thou terrified? Is the Judge but for a season? Has his kingdom an end? Even if he does not give recompense now, he will assuredly give it.
6:626
For he who demands the reckoning abides, and reigns perpetually.
6:627
'Ye nations shall perish out of his land.'
6:628
'The desire of the poor thou hast heard, O Lord;'
6:629
'thine ear hath given heed to the preparation of their heart.'
6:630
Another translator: 'Thine ear hearkened to the purpose of their heart.'
6:631
Another: 'Thou wilt prepare their heart; thine ear will give heed.'
6:632
'To judge for the orphan and the lowly, that man upon the earth may no more presume to boast himself.'
6:633
Another translator: 'To judge for the orphan and the crushed.'
6:634
Dost thou see the prophet making the greater part of his discourse concerning care for those who suffer evil? For to these especially belongs the being ill-treated.
6:635
For to the one who is wronged there is the loss of goods, but to the other the danger concerns the last and utmost things.
6:636
For what if they do not even perceive the sickness in which they lie? This is an intensification of their insensibility; and for this very reason they most of all ought to be pitied.
6:637
For little children too take no account of things that are terrible, but often thrust their hands even into fire, while at empty masks they are frightened and tremble at the mere sight of them.
6:638
貪婪之人正像這樣的孩子:他們懼怕貧窮——貧窮本不是可怕的事,反倒是安穩的憑藉;
To such children the covetous are like: fearing poverty, which is not a thing to be feared, but is rather a ground of security;
6:639
yet setting great store by unjust wealth and covetousness, which is more to be feared than any fire.
6:640
For everywhere covetousness is an evil.
6:641
This vice, then, the Prophet exhorts us to cut out root and branch, threatening, striking fear, calling upon God to rise up for the punishment of such insensibility.
6:642
'You shall perish, you nations, from His land'—threatening them with utter destruction—and asking Him to become a helper and
6:643
an avenger of those who are wronged, so that these too may find relief, and those others may be brought to their senses.
6:644
Let no one, therefore, pursue abundance of riches.
6:645
Many evils are born of it for those who do not take heed:
6:646
senselessness, sloth, envy, vainglory, and many others far more than these.
6:647
但你們若要脫離這一切,就當把那根剷除;
But that you may be rid of all these, cut out the root;
6:648
for while it remains, the evil shoots do not cease to sprout.
6:649
這些話之所以說出來,並非只要我們聽見,乃是要我們也加以改正,並在基督耶穌裡顯出豐盛的德行;
For this reason these things have been spoken—not that we should merely hear, but that we should also amend our ways and display great virtue in Christ Jesus;
6:650
to whom be the glory and the might unto the ages of ages.
