To the end, concerning the winepresses.
5:2
Another version: A victory-song concerning the winepresses.
5:3
Another version: To the giver of victory, concerning the Gittite instrument.
5:4
But the Hebrew has: Lamanasseh, al haggittith.
5:5
O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is Thy name in all the earth!
5:6
Another version: How great is Thy name!
5:7
In the psalm before this one he was saying:
5:8
我要照著耶和華的公義稱謝祂,歌頌至高耶和華的名;
I will give thanks unto the Lord according to His righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High;
5:9
here he fulfils the promise, offering up a hymn to Him.
5:10
在那篇詩中,所說的話彷彿是出於一個人之口;
And in that psalm the things said are, as it were, from a single person;
5:11
for 'O Lord my God,' he says, 'in Thee have I hoped; save me.'
5:12
For 'O Lord,' he says, 'our Lord, how wonderful is Thy name.'
5:13
But give me silence, and listen with exactness.
5:14
因為在戲院之中,當那撒但的歌隊獻唱時,尚且有極深的靜默,好叫那些敗壞人的曲調得以被接受;
For if in a theatre, when the satanic choirs are singing, there comes about deep quiet, so that those pernicious songs may be received;
5:15
and this, though the choir is composed
5:16
戲子和跳舞的男子所組成,其中領隊的是某個褻瀆的人和彈琴的人,那曲調又是屬撒但的、敗壞人的,是由污穢邪惡的鬼魔所唱的;
of mimes and dancing men, with some profane fellow and harp-player leading the chorus among them, and the melody being satanic and pernicious, sung by a defiled and wicked demon;
5:17
here, where the choir is of holy men, and the choir-leader is the Prophet, and the melody is not from satanic energy but from spiritual grace —
5:18
But the One who is sung is no demon, but God.
5:19
How ought we not to furnish much stillness, and to listen with awe? For we have become fellow-choristers with the powers above.
5:20
For indeed the choirs on high, and the Cherubim and the Seraphim, have this as their work: to hymn God without ceasing.
5:21
From these choirs they also appeared upon the earth, singing together with the shepherds who kept watch in the fields.
5:22
Let us therefore give heed also to this song.
5:23
Now those who hymn an earthly king discourse to him concerning his dominion, concerning his trophies, concerning his victory; and they name the nations that have been vanquished, calling the kings sackers of cities and conquerors of barbarians, and all such things.
5:24
Such a song, in some sort, does this blessed man also sing.
5:25
For he recounts victory and trophy, and the abolishing of wars—not of such kinds, but of ones far more grievous.
5:26
For to all the others who do not believe in Him, He is Lord in one way only; but to us in a twofold way:
5:27
both by making us out of nothing, and by being known by us.
5:28
And observe how, from the very opening, he sets forth the sum of the benefaction.
5:29
For if you learn how He became your Lord—that He appropriated to Himself and made alive those who were alienated, and dead, and put to death—you will see well that this is the sum of the benefaction.
5:30
Struck with amazement, then, at this, the Prophet says:
5:31
How wonderful is Your name!
5:32
that is, exceedingly wonderful.
5:33
至於奇妙到何等地步,他卻沒有說出來;
But how wonderful, he did not say;
5:34
for neither was he able to measure it, but he represented the intensity and the surpassing greatness of it.
5:35
Where now are those who pry into the essence of God? For if, merely by uttering His name, he was so amazed as to be struck out of himself,
5:36
what pardon could those men obtain, who claim to know His very essence, when the Prophet was not even able to learn how wonderful the name is? How wonderful is Your name!
5:37
For in this name death was destroyed, demons were bound, heaven was opened, the gates of paradise were flung wide, the Spirit was sent down, slaves became free, enemies became sons, strangers became heirs, and men became angels.
5:38
我何必說天使呢?神成了人,人成了神;
Why do I say angels? God became man, and man God;
5:39
諸天接納了那出於塵土的本性;
heaven received the nature that is from the earth;
5:40
the earth received Him who sits upon the Cherubim, together with the angelic host.
5:41
The middle wall of partition was taken away, the fence was broken down, the things that were divided were made one, the darkness was quenched, the light shone forth, death was swallowed up.
5:42
Pondering all these things and more than these, the Prophet cried aloud, saying:
5:43
How wonderful is Your name in all the earth!
5:44
Where now are the children of the Jews, who shamelessly set themselves against the truth? For I would gladly ask them, concerning whom these things are spoken.
5:45
Concerning the Almighty, they will say.
5:46
But His name was not wonderful in all the earth.
5:47
And Isaiah bears witness, saying:
5:48
Because of you My name is blasphemed among the nations.
5:49
但若那些事奉祂的人反成了祂被褻瀆的緣由,那奇妙之處又在哪裏呢?至於這名按其本性乃是奇妙的,這是顯明的;
But if those who served Him became a cause of His being blasphemed, where was there anything wonderful? For that it is wonderful by nature is plain;
5:50
yet among men at that time it was not wonderful to the multitude, but even despised.
5:51
But when the only-begotten Son came, everywhere His name became wonderful, together with Christ.
5:52
From the rising of the sun, He says, even to its setting, My name has been glorified among the nations.
5:53
In every place incense is offered to My name, and a pure sacrifice.
5:54
The whole earth has been filled with the knowledge of the Lord.
5:55
Our fathers acquired false idols.
5:56
Do you see that all the things that have been spoken are concerning the Son? For it was His name that became wonderful in all the earth.
5:57
For Your magnificence has been lifted up above the heavens.
5:58
Another translator renders it: 'Who hast set thy praise above the heavens.'
5:59
因為他既已提到地,便將話題也轉向天;
For since he had made mention of the earth, he transfers his discourse also to heaven;
5:60
which indeed he is always wont to do, showing the whole inhabited world giving praise to its own Master.
5:61
And it is this very thing that he shows here too when he says: Marvellous below, marvellous above.
5:62
因為不只是人,連天使也頌揚這些已成就的事,並為所賜給人類的恩惠獻上感謝;
For not men only, but angels also, hymn the things that have come to pass, and give thanks for the benefits bestowed upon mankind;
5:63
which indeed they did from the very beginning, when they set up a choir upon the earth.
5:64
Either, then, he means this, that the angels also sing, or he wishes to set forth His greatness.
5:65
因為每當經文要述說某件偉大的事時,便將這些元素之間的距離呈現在我們眼前;
For whenever Scripture wishes to say something great, it brings before us the distances between these elements;
5:66
'According to the height of heaven from the earth.'
5:67
'As far as the east is distant from the west, so far hath he removed our iniquities from us.'
5:68
Here, then, he is amazed at the things that have come to pass, how great they are.
5:69
For the nature which was lower than all things He set higher than all.
5:70
'Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou perfected praise.'
5:71
Another translator: 'Out of the mouth of infants thou hast founded strength.'
5:72
And what he means is this: that Thou didst most of all display Thy strength from this quarter, when Thou didst set in motion Thy invincible power, and didst make clear and articulate the lisping tongue unto that glorification.
5:73
For it is the hymn-singing of the children, which took place in the temple, that he here proclaims beforehand.
5:74
And why, pray, passing over the other miracles—the raising of the dead, the cleansing of lepers, the driving out of demons—does he make mention of the miracle of the children? Because those other things had happened even before this, and though not in this same manner, yet they had happened, and had some kinship with it, even if not in the mode.
5:75
因為在以利沙的時候確有死人復活,也有大痲瘋得潔淨;在大衛的時候,當掃羅被鬼附著時,也有鬼被趕出;
For indeed a dead man was raised in the days of Elisha, and a leper was cleansed, and a demon was driven out in the days of David, when Saul was possessed by a demon;
5:76
but a choir of sucking children then for the first time uttered its voice.
5:77
In order, therefore, that the Jew might not shamelessly assert that these things had been spoken concerning matters in the Old Testament, he selected a sign that then took place for the first time and alone.
5:78
此外,這些所發生的事,也是使徒們的預表;
In another way, too, the things that happened were also a type of the apostles;
5:79
for these men also, being exceedingly infants, and more voiceless than the very fish, drew in the whole inhabited world as with a net.
5:80
And that this in particular is the power of God, see the prophet saying this very thing in the Old Testament concerning His Father.
5:81
For discoursing with Moses, He says:
5:82
'Who made the dull of hearing and the deaf, the seeing and the blind?' And again:
5:83
'Giving clear tongues to those of stammering speech.'
5:84
'The Lord giveth me the tongue of instruction, that I should know when it is fitting to speak a word.'
5:85
'Come, let us go down and confound their tongues.'
5:86
Great, therefore, and mighty is the demonstration.
5:87
因為在其他神蹟的情形中,那些人雖然毫無道理,卻仍憑其厚顏猜疑背後有某人在作為;
For in the case of the other miracles, even if unreasonably, yet in their shamelessness they suspected that some one was at work;
5:88
but here they had nothing to say, since nature itself, bare and by itself, was contending.
5:89
為此緣故,他並不單單說「嬰孩」,免得有人以為他是指那些天真無邪、較為單純的人;
For this reason he did not simply say 'of babes,' lest anyone should suppose that he meant the guileless and the more simple-minded;
5:90
but he added 'and of sucklings,' characterizing the age by the addition of the reference to the breast.
5:91
For he does not simply say 'of babes,' but 'of those at the breast,' who had never yet partaken of solid food.
5:92
This, then, is not the only marvel, that they sent forth a voice, and a voice clearly articulate, but that it was also laden with countless good things.
5:93
For the very things which the apostles did not yet know, these children were hymning.
5:94
From this he also hints at yet another thing: that those who approach the doctrines must become children in their understanding.
5:95
For 'unless one receive the kingdom of heaven as a little child,' he says, 'he cannot enter into it.'
5:96
He states also the cause on account of which this marvel came to pass:
5:97
for the other miracles took place not for the sake of the enemies, but so that those who drew near might enjoy the benefit, and that others might be instructed.
5:98
不僅這事發生了,更是為要使仇敵閉口無言;
This alone came to pass, but it was also so that the enemies might be silenced;
5:99
concerning whom another prophet also, declaring them more precisely, says:
5:100
For it was they who had bound Him and led Him to the cross,
5:101
That Thou mightest destroy the enemy and the avenger.
5:102
為要使仇敵和那為自己報仇的止息,此處指的是猶太民族;
So as to still the enemy and him that avengeth himself, meaning here the Jewish people;
5:103
For they drove out Christ as an enemy, yet they pretended that they did this as avengers of the Father.
5:104
For this reason, depriving them of this excuse, He said:
5:105
恨我的,也恨我的父;
He that hateth Me hateth My Father also;
5:106
信我的,就是信那差我來者;
He that believeth in Me believeth in Him that sent Me;
5:107
in every way joining the Father to the honour and the insult shown toward Himself.
5:108
And behold the precision of the Prophet.
5:109
他沒有說「為要懲罰」,而是說「為要除滅」;
He said not, That Thou mightest punish, but, That Thou mightest destroy;
5:110
另一位先知更清楚地指明這點,說「為要使之止息」,意即除去他們的無恥,而非教導他們;
which the other prophet declares more plainly, saying, That Thou mightest still, that is, to do away with their shamelessness, not to instruct them;
5:111
Beholding therefore such a wonder, and having nothing to reply, they turned upon Him, saying:
5:112
Hearest Thou not what these are saying? Whereas they ought thereupon to have worshipped and marvelled, they were instead in great perplexity, and though bound to say to one another, each to his neighbour, 'Hearest thou not what these are saying?', they gave themselves up and said to Christ:
5:113
為何沒有天使的聲音出現呢?因為那在他們看來會像是幻影;
And for what reason was no voice of angels brought forth? Because that would have seemed to them to be a phantom;
5:114
but against this they had nothing to reply.
5:115
And what was it that the children said? Nothing burdensome, nor grievous, nor able to smite them, but rather something declaring the concord with the Father.
5:116
Blessed, they said, is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.
5:117
那時,祂制止了他們的無恥,後來連那城也傾覆了,普天下沒有一處不遭受猶太人所受的無數災禍;
At that time, then, He put down their shamelessness, but afterward the city too fell, and there is no part of the inhabited world untouched by the calamities of the Jews;
5:118
他們反倒像一具殘廢的身體,四散各處,顯露著自己的創傷;
but like a maimed body, they have been scattered everywhere, displaying their wounds;
5:119
正如審判官處死了許多兇手之後,將其中一人釘在木樁上示眾,好使即便他們死了,那刑罰仍彷彿方才施行一般,使活著的人警醒;
and just as judges, when they have executed many murderers, impale one, so that even after their death, as though the punishment had just now been inflicted, it may bring the living to their senses;
5:120
照樣,在這裡祂也不是使死了的、而是使活著的成為眾人的鑑戒,將他們四散各處;
so too here, not the dead but the living He made an example to all, by scattering them abroad;
5:121
and they who once inhabited a single land are now scattered over every part of the earth.
5:122
And if thou shouldest ask the cause, thou wilt find no other, save the crucifying of Christ.
5:123
請告訴我,為何從前不是這樣呢?就算從前曾有過,他們也只是被隔絕於一個國度之中,而且僅有數年之久;
For why, tell me, has this not happened in this way before? But even if it did once happen, they were confined to one nation, and for a few years only;
5:124
but now it is not so, but they are punished without end.
5:125
And if thou shouldest ask them, Why did ye crucify Christ? they say, As being a deceiver and a sorcerer.
5:126
Then for this ye ought to have been honoured, and to have received a larger territory, as having pleased God.
5:127
因為那殺了迷惑人者、行邪術者、與神為敵者的,是殺了神的仇敵;
For he who slew a deceiver and a sorcerer and one who set himself against God, slew an enemy of God;
5:128
and he who slew an enemy would justly be held in good repute.
5:129
然而如今非尼哈,只為殺了一個淫婦,就在神面前得了這樣的嘉許,以致被算為配得祭司的職分和這樣大的尊榮;
But now Phinehas, in order to slay one harlot, so gained favour with God as to be counted worthy of the priesthood and of such great honour;
5:130
but ye, who ought to have been held in far greater repute than he, if indeed ye slew a deceiver, wander about everywhere, vagrants and without a city.
5:131
So that ye have suffered these things for no other reason than that ye crucified your Protector and Benefactor and the Teacher of truth.
5:132
For if He were a deceiver and one set against God, and, not being God, wished to be God, and drew to Himself the reverence due to the Father, then ye ought to have gained even greater repute than Phinehas and Samuel and all those men, having shown such great zeal for the law.
5:133
But now, the things which ye never suffered while worshipping idols, committing impiety, slaughtering your children—these things ye now suffer, and there is no release from your troubles, but ye are wanderers and fugitives and vagrants, enslaved to the laws of the Romans, ye traverse land and sea, exiles and cityless, homeless and reduced to bondage, cast out from freedom and fatherland and priesthood and all things,
5:134
having formerly been cast out, scattered in the midst of barbarians and countless nations, hated by all men, abominable, and exposed to all for ill-treatment.
5:135
因為你們並未因殺了神的仇敵而得著獎賞;
For ye did not receive the prizes because ye slaughtered the enemy of God;
5:136
For the things which ye now suffer belong not to those who slay the enemies of God, but to those who make away with His friends.
5:137
他們卻回答說:「先生,我們並沒有說這些話」;
But, good sir, we do not say these things, they reply;
5:138
It is because of our sins that we suffer these things.
5:139
'Do you now make confession, you who are disobedient?' And for what sins? Tell me.
5:140
Surely it is not now for the first time that you have sinned? On the contrary, you have now even become more moderate.
5:141
But this is what I would ask of you:
5:142
Why is it that, though formerly you were always sinning, you nonetheless met with God's loving-kindness, whereas now you no longer do so—and, what is still more astonishing, now that you are sinning less? For in those days you were being initiated into the rites of Baal-Peor, you worshipped the calf, you slaughtered your sons and put your daughters to death, and this while you were enjoying signs and wonders.
5:143
But now, though you see no sea being parted, no rock being split, no prophets appearing, and though you no longer enjoy the accustomed providence, you nevertheless display a greater moderation.
5:144
Why then is it that, when your sins are fewer and your self-control is greater, the chastisement and the punishment are greater? Is it not plain even to those who are utterly senseless, that it is because your present sin is greater? For so long as you sinned against fellow servants—slaying and stoning the prophets—you obtained pardon.
5:145
But when you stretched out your hands against the Master, thereafter the wound became for you incurable.
5:146
For this reason four hundred years have now passed since even the very soil of the city was made desolate, the priesthood was destroyed, the kingship dissolved, the affairs of the tribes thrown into confusion, and all those august and splendid things brought to nothing, so that not even a trace of them remains among you.
5:147
But at the beginning, even when the temple had been torn down, the prophets remained, and the supplies of the Spirit, and miracles.
5:148
但如今,為要叫你們清楚知道神已永遠轉臉離開你們,連這些事也都被除去了;
But now, so that you may clearly learn that God has turned Himself away from you perpetually, these things too have been done away with;
5:149
and slavery, and captivity, and the ruin of all things have overtaken you, and—hardest of all—the abandonment by God.
5:150
And God has done just as one might do who, when a thankless slave has often been scourged and yet not corrected, strips him of his garments and lets him go wandering naked, destitute, a vagrant, begging and driven off on every side.
5:151
But formerly your condition was not such; rather, there were prophets among you, both in Egypt, and in Babylon, and in the wilderness.
5:152
Moses in Egypt; in Babylon, Daniel and Ezekiel; and again in Egypt, Jeremiah.
5:153
And miracles upon miracles, and the nation grew ever more illustrious, since your captive kings came to be exalted above others.
5:154
But now all those things are gone, and the punishment is harder than the former ones—not only in the length of the time, but also in the great abandonment.
5:155
For what reason then, tell me, when you sinned more grievously, did you enjoy such great providence,
5:156
whereas when, as you say, you were even zealous on behalf of the Law, you suffered worse things? For from this you condemn God of injustice, as though He honored you while you sinned, but dishonored you while you did right.
5:157
For if, as you say, you did away with a deceiver and did what was right,
5:158
then, if God is righteous—as indeed He is righteous—He ought to have honored you, not to have chastised you.
5:159
But if He does chastise you, it is plain that your present sins are more grievous.
5:160
And if you are not now impious, nor do you sacrifice your children as before, what other sin is there on account of which you have suffered worse things? Or is it not plain that the audacity of the cross is the crowning point of your evils? This has destroyed you more utterly than idolatry, than the making of the calf, and than the slaying of children.
5:161
For it is not the same thing to slaughter one's own son and to crucify one's own Master.
5:162
為此緣故,當你們宰殺自己兒子的時候,你們尚能享受神的慈愛憐憫;
For this reason, when you were slaughtering your sons, you enjoyed loving-kindness;
5:163
but when you crucified the Son of God, who is also your own Master—
5:164
How many years are there from the Exodus out of Egypt until the coming of Christ? I think there are fifteen hundred years and more.
5:165
How then did He bear with you throughout all those years while you were sinning, but now has cast you off, at the very time when He ought most of all to have crowned you, even if you had sinned much? For your achievement, you say, was very great indeed, if you slew a deceiver.
5:166
Besides this, you also think you now keep the Sabbaths, and you do not worship idols, and in other matters you contend eagerly to observe the Law.
5:167
Therefore, at the very time when your life is better and your achievement, as you say, is so great, then it is that you suffer the utmost calamities.
5:168
What could be worse than this madness? What worse than this folly, that while wishing to make a defense on your own behalf, you blaspheme against God? For if the sin against Christ is not greater than all those others, but rather, as you say, a just deed and a righteous achievement, why on earth does He chastise you when you do right, but spared you when you were sinning? For this is a thing that not God—nay, not even any man who has his wits about him—would ever endure to do.
5:169
But what do they say in reply to this? 'We were cast off in order that we might become teachers of the whole world.'
5:170
These things are nonsense and idle chatter.
5:171
For those who are to be teachers must first themselves have attained to right conduct, and only then be sent forth to this task—
5:172
such as were the prophets and the apostles.
5:173
But when they themselves are perverted and full of every wickedness, how could they ever have been put forward for the work of teaching? Let us, then, look at what kind of life they led before this time.
5:174
For we shall find that they were more savage than wild beasts.
5:175
因為他們竟成了弒父的、殺害兒女的、拜偶像的、貪婪的人;
For indeed they became slayers of their fathers, and murderers of their children, and idolaters, and covetous men;
5:176
and the prophecies are full of these charges against them.
5:177
And Jeremiah, making plain their lustfulness, said:
5:178
他們變成了發情的公馬;
They became like lustful stallions;
5:179
each one neighed after his neighbor's wife.
5:180
有甚麼比這樣的污穢更惡的呢?因為他們與彼此的妻子交合,並不像人那樣;
What is worse than this uncleanness? For they did not consort with one another's wives as men do;
5:181
and for this reason he called their madness a neighing.
5:182
And he charges them not only with fornication, but also with adultery, and that committed shamelessly, just as among the brute beasts.
5:183
And another prophet says:
5:184
'They went in unto the woman, hanging up curtains; both son and father to the same handmaid.'
5:185
Was it for this, then—tell me—that he sent you as teachers: that we might learn fornications and adulteries, and that father and son should share the same bed? And what of Ezekiel? 'You have not even done according to the customs of the nations,' he says.
5:186
Was it these men, then, worse than the nations, that he sent as teachers? Tell me.
5:187
And who could bear to speak of their bloodthirsty deeds? For they slaughtered their sons and daughters to the demons, and burned them up.
5:188
David too shows this, saying:
5:189
'And they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons.'
5:190
Was it for these things, then, that he sent them—that human nature might learn this, that one must slaughter sons and daughters? Are you not ashamed, do you not hide your faces, in fabricating such nonsense? For yet another says:
5:191
'They mingle blood upon blood;'
5:192
'and cursing, and lying, and theft, and murder, and adultery are poured out upon the earth.'
5:193
And another says: 'You had the countenance of a harlot; you became shameless toward all.' And yet another again:
5:194
'Your rulers are like the wolves of Arabia.'
5:195
'There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God.'
5:196
'They have all turned aside, together they have become unprofitable.'
5:197
那麼,你們出去所教導的,竟是這些事嗎?就是無恥、愚妄、淫亂、姦淫、兇殺、一切邪惡之道?你們豈不停止逼我們把你們的惡行公之於眾嗎?你們這些「自出母腹便被人抬著,直到年老仍受管教的人」;
Was it these things, then, that you went forth to teach—shamelessness, folly, fornication, adulteries, murders, every way of wickedness? Will you not cease compelling us to parade your evils in public? You who are 'borne from the womb, and instructed even unto old age';
5:198
you who are blind, and cast one another into the pit.
5:199
For 'if the blind lead the blind,' he says, 'both shall fall into the pit.'
5:200
You who day by day enjoyed the prophets, yet never became any better—were you to be teachers of others? Will you not cease from prating such things, and come to recognize your own wickedness? For this it is that has ever destroyed you—the not
5:201
willing to know even the ground of your own sins.
5:202
For this reason—just as judges do, when they command those who are being scourged to be followed by heralds who cry aloud and declare the causes of the stripes, 'Let none be thieves, let none be robbers'—
5:203
so also God, parading you everywhere, commanded the prophets to follow you, declaring the cause of the punishment.
5:204
For everywhere throughout the world they are bound together with you, and even now they still cry out against you.
5:205
And should you enter into the synagogues, you will hear them continually speaking these very words.
5:206
And David indeed says, sketching out that robbers' tribunal of Caiaphas:
5:207
For having said, 'Let us break their bonds, and cast away from us their yoke,' he added:
5:208
'Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his fury.'
5:209
And Isaiah, having said that 'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter,' added:
5:210
'And I will give the wicked in exchange for his burial, and the rich in exchange for his death;'
5:211
and again elsewhere, discoursing concerning the vineyard:
5:212
'I waited that it should bring forth righteousness, but it wrought iniquity, and not righteousness, but a cry.'
5:213
And what kind of cry? 'Crucify, crucify!'
5:214
'Therefore I will pull down its hedge, and it shall be for a trampling;'
5:215
'and I will command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.'
5:216
所以你們被分散四方,並不是為了那緣故,乃是因為在十字架上所膽敢行的事;
It was not for this reason, then, that you were scattered abroad, but because of the deeds dared at the cross;
5:217
and this too is clear from the prophets.
5:218
And that you may learn the power of Christ, and that you may be taught through your own experience what you were not instructed in through the prophets, behold at least the very events themselves bearing witness.
5:219
For what the Law taught you, this the power of Christ has accomplished abundantly, out of its own overflowing fullness.
5:220
因為當你們仍持守律法之時,你們依然殺人、殺害兒女、又行姦淫;
For as long as you had the Law, you nevertheless committed murder, and slew your children, and committed adultery;
5:221
but when the Sun of righteousness shone forth, and many of your evils were diminished, and you came to lead a more temperate life, being reformed by your zealous rivalry toward us.
5:222
為此緣故,祂將你們分散各處,好叫你們知道祂在地上所栽植的是何等的國度;
For this reason He scattered you abroad, that you might know what manner of commonwealth He has planted upon the earth;
5:223
and He destroyed the Temple, drawing you away from wickedness even against your will.
5:224
And where the Temple was destroyed, there also was Christ buried, so that those who came to His tomb might behold the trophy of His power, and see standing firm the word which says:
5:225
'There shall not be left here one stone upon another.'
5:226
For everywhere are His trophies, and the memorials of His power.
5:227
但若如你們所說,祂是不虔且與神為敵的,那麼即使你們犯罪千萬次,你們也不當如此受懲罰;
But if, as you say, He was impious and an adversary of God, then even if you had sinned ten thousand times, not even so ought you to have been punished in this manner;
5:228
lest anyone should suppose that you are paying the penalty on His account.
5:229
Or have you not heard God saying, when you were in captivity, that 'It is not for your sake that I act, but for My own sake, that My name be not profaned'? And yet at that time your wickedness was stretched to its utmost.
5:230
'But nevertheless,' He says, 'lest the barbarians should think Me weak, I pass over your sins, and I save you.'
5:231
那麼,當時祂雖見你們干犯律法仍拯救了你們,為要祂的名不被褻瀆;
So then, at that time He saved you though you were transgressing the Law, that His name might not be profaned;
5:232
難道如今祂就不這樣行嗎?因為即使你們犯罪千萬次,你們也不當受這樣的苦——倘若基督真是個迷惑人的——好叫無人以為你們是為祂的緣故受這些苦,反倒你們理當得救;
would He not now have done the same? For even if you had sinned ten thousand times, you ought to have suffered no such thing—if indeed Christ were a deceiver—so that none might think you had suffered these things on His account, but rather you ought even to have been saved;
5:233
but even if you did deserve to suffer, as I said before, yet not at that time.
5:234
But now these things came to pass all together at once.
5:235
因為當十字架的事成就了,過了不久使徒們便出去了,隨即一場慘烈的戰爭便挑動起來,攻擊那城;
For when the Cross had gone forth, a little while after the apostles went out, and immediately a grievous war was kindled against that city;
5:236
福音書中所記的:「那些日子,餵奶的和懷孕的有禍了」,以及那一切的話,都在事實上應驗了;
and that which is in the Gospels—'Woe to those who are giving suck and to those who are with child'—and all those things came to fulfilment in deed;
5:237
and the word, 'Then shall there be tribulation, such as never was,' was fulfilled.
5:238
For indeed women ate their own children, and the enemy ripped open the bellies of the dead, and barbarian fire was spread everywhere, and all things were full of blood, and there were strange tragedies, and the whole inhabited world was filled with the calamities of the Jews.
5:239
Considering these things, then, come to know your own Master.
5:240
Did you not slaughter the prophets? Did you suffer any such thing? Did you not overthrow the altars? Did there befall
5:241
upon you any such calamity? Did you not worship the calf, and get yourselves initiated to Baal-peor, and become ignorant of your own nature? Did you not undergo the trial of such enemies? Were you not, in the very midst of My benefactions, saved even while being ungrateful? Whence, then, come to you these endless evils? Is it not utterly plain that it is because the sin was dared against the Master, not against the servants? Wherefore there is for you no release from the evils that hold you fast, nor shall there be.
5:242
For if there were, the prophets would have foretold it.
5:243
But as it is, they spoke of the captivity, yet of the return nowhere at all—and this though they continually mingled good things with the punishments, and appointed set times.
5:244
因為耶利米曾定了七十年,但以理也照樣定了三個半七;
For indeed Jeremiah appointed seventy years, and Daniel likewise three weeks and a half;
5:245
and concerning Egypt it was said that they should be in bondage four hundred and thirty years.
5:246
But concerning this captivity there is set down nowhere any time nor any end, but 'your house is left unto you desolate,' and day by day your affairs go on unto the worse.
5:247
Reckoning up all these things accurately among yourselves, and from them enlarging your argument—for 'Give occasion to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser'—you shall be able to convict their shamelessness and their ingratitude.
5:248
'When I look upon the heavens, the works of Thy fingers.'
5:249
Another version: 'For I behold the heavens.'
5:250
'The moon and the stars, which Thou hast founded.'
5:251
Having said, 'Thou hast destroyed the enemies,' he furnishes also the proof of this glorious victory.
5:252
'For Thou,' he says, 'who wast crucified, who wast slain, hast been revealed as the Maker of the inhabited world.'
5:253
Showing thereby that formerly not many knew this, yet afterwards all shall know it.
5:254
And for what reason did he not go through all the parts of the created world? Because, having gone over the more important of the visible things, there was no need of teaching about the rest.
5:255
To such a degree, then, were the enemies overthrown, that He who was driven away and slain by them was revealed to be the Maker of all things visible.
5:256
他為何不說「你的手」,卻說「你的手指」呢?乃是要表明這些可見之物不過是那極微小之能力的工作,並顯出創造的奇妙——就是星宿雖高懸空中卻不墜落;
And for what reason did he not say, 'Of Thy hands,' but, 'Of Thy fingers'? Showing the visible things to be the work of the smallest exertion of power, and the marvel of the creation—that though hung aloft, the stars do not fall down;
5:257
and yet it is not the nature of foundations to hang above, but rather they are by nature made to lie beneath.
5:258
But the Master-craftsman, the Creator, who works wonders as well, has in the visible things wrought most of them beyond the sequence of nature.
5:259
And why does he say nothing about the incorporeal powers, and demonstrate the Creator's handiwork from that source? Because for the present this was the matter of concern, that they should learn about the visible things.
5:260
For this reason his Father also, discoursing with the Jews time and again, does not say:
5:261
「我造了天使和基路伯」;
'I made the angels and the Cherubim';
5:262
卻說:「我鋪張了諸天」;
but rather, 'I stretched out the heaven';
5:263
「我的手立了大地的根基,我的右手堅定了它」;
'my hand laid the foundation of the earth, my right hand made it firm';
5:264
and he always expends his whole discourse upon the visible things, ordering all for the salvation of those who hear.
5:265
For being rather dull of understanding, they were led on more readily by the things that are seen than by the things unseen.
5:266
For this reason Paul too, whenever he came forward and addressed the people, would begin his exordium from the visible creation, saying:
5:267
「那造天、地、海和其中萬物的神」;
'The God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all things that are in them';
5:268
and from the yearly rains, and from the race of mankind, he always frames his discourse.
5:269
因為我若說他造了基路伯,就需要雙重的論證:既要證明基路伯確實存在,又要證明是他所造的;
For if I say that he made the Cherubim, I have need of a twofold demonstration: both that the Cherubim exist, and that he made them;
5:270
but in the case of things visible, I am obliged to prove only that he made them.
5:271
所以這論證也就更為容易;
Therefore the argument is also the easier;
5:272
for sight itself provides the witness of what is asserted.
5:273
For the hearer sees the greatness, the beauty, the usefulness, the position, and the fair order of things.
5:274
So that for me there is but one thing to establish: to show that God wrought it.
5:275
And why did he make mention not of the sun, but of the moon and
5:276
the stars? Indeed, by saying this he hinted at that other matter as well.
5:277
For since some sever the night from God's creation, by means of the moon he brought it to light, showing that he is the Maker of this too.
5:278
No small thing, too, is the variety of the stars and the demonstration afforded by the courses of the moon.
5:279
'What is man, that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou visitest him?' Another version: 'What is a man, that thou rememberest him?' Another, instead of 'thou visitest him,' says, 'thou wilt visit him.'
5:280
Having spoken of the creation, and having hinted at the whole from a part, he thereafter plunges into the discourse concerning the providence exercised toward men.
5:281
因為那些所說的話固然是為著我們的族類,但那看顧的憑據也是如此,他正是以此扶持我們;
For those things which were spoken were indeed on account of our race, but so also are the tokens of the loving care by which he holds us fast;
5:282
for the whole creation is for the sake of man.
5:283
Yet he also stirs up another kind of providence, and does not simply enter upon this discourse, but with great thankfulness, giving thanks on behalf of the whole world, declaring the universal benefaction, and setting forth the greatness of the dispensation that has come to pass toward him.
5:284
For if before this there was nothing, much more was there nothing when Christ came, after so many and so great sins.
5:285
And he shows that the coming of Christ was not apart from sparing mercy, but out of great love toward mankind.
5:286
For just as some excellent physician, leaving those who are in health, he came to us who are sick.
5:287
Setting forth this very thing, therefore, he said:
5:288
'What is man?' That is to say, 'He is nothing, he is something paltry.'
5:289
For looking to so great a providence, and to God's so great loving care, and to the works which he wrought for the salvation of the human race, he is exceedingly amazed and marvels why on earth he counted him worthy of such great providence.
5:290
For consider that on account of him are all the things that are seen.
5:291
從亞當直到他降臨,凡所安排的一切,都是為著他;
On account of him were the things dispensed from Adam until his coming;
5:292
為著他,才有樂園、誡命、管教、神蹟、刑罰,以及律法之後的種種恩惠;
on account of him were paradise, and commandments, and chastisements, and miracles, and punishments, and benefactions after the law;
5:293
on account of him the Son of God became man.
5:294
What could one say of the things to come, which he is destined to enjoy? Reckoning up all these things, therefore, he says:
5:295
'What so great a thing is man, that he was counted worthy of so much?' (Section 7)
5:296
For if anyone considers how many things have come to pass and are still coming to pass on his account, and how many things he shall enjoy hereafter, he will be filled with much awe, and then he will see clearly how greatly prized by God is this living creature.
5:297
'Thou madest him a little lower than the angels.'
5:298
Another version reads, 'A little lower than God.'
5:299
希伯來原文則作:「Vattechasserehu me'at me'elohim。」
And the Hebrew reads, 'Vattechasserehu me'at me'elohim.'
5:300
Here he called to mind the condemnation, and the ancient sin, bringing death into the midst of his discourse.
5:301
But this too the Only-begotten, when He came, dissolved.
5:302
'Thou hast crowned him with glory and honour.'
5:303
Another version, 'Thou wilt crown him with glory and dignity.'
5:304
These words may be understood both according to the literal history and according to a higher, anagogical sense.
5:305
For he speaks both of the dominion which was entrusted to him at his creation,
5:306
and he speaks of the good things that came afterward, which he enjoyed after the coming of Christ.
5:307
For at the beginning he heard the words:
5:308
'The dread of you and the fear of you shall be upon all the beasts of the earth.'
5:309
And, 'Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea.'
5:310
'Tread upon serpents and scorpions.'
5:311
But leaving these things aside, he weaves his discourse from the humbler matters, leaving those loftier things to be discerned by those who are able to see more keenly.
5:312
For the greater glory and the honour are the things that came to pass under the New Covenant, when a man has Christ for his head, when he is perfected into His body, when he becomes a brother and joint-heir and conformed to His body, when he receives a glory greater than that of Moses, as Paul made plain, showing that not as Moses put a veil, but 'we all with unveiled face behold the glory of God as in a mirror.'
5:313
'For that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect.'
5:314
'by reason of the glory that surpasseth.'
5:315
This, then, is the glory of which the Prophet speaks according to the anagogical sense.
5:316
For what is equal to this, when we join in the dance with angels, when we are led into adoption as sons, when God does not even spare the Only-begotten for our sake? What purple robe, what diadem is not less splendid than these things, when we laugh death to scorn, when we are removed to the impassibility of the bodiless powers—we who before this were dishonoured, and inglorious, and abominable? Adam, having wrought neither anything evil nor anything good, was honoured immediately upon coming into being.
5:317
For how could he who did not yet exist have wrought anything? But we, who have committed countless dreadful deeds, have enjoyed far greater honour.
5:318
'No longer,' He says, 'do I call you servants.'
5:319
No longer do the angels feel shame at us, but they even minister to our salvation.
5:320
因為果然有天使來到腓利那裡,也來到許多別人那裡;
For indeed an angel came to Philip, and to many others;
5:321
and they brought good tidings to men.
5:322
And we are heirs not upon earth, but partakers of the heavenly good things, and sharers with Christ, and we are called into fellowship with the Only-begotten.
5:323
All these things he intimates through 'the glory and the honour.'
5:324
Wherefore also he said, 'Thou shalt crown him with glory and honour,' foretelling that which was to come.
5:325
'And Thou hast set him over the works of Thy hands.'
5:326
Another version, 'Thou hast made him to have authority over the works of Thy hands.'
5:327
'Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet.'
5:328
'All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field also.'
5:329
'The birds of the heaven, and the fish of the sea, whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.'
5:330
'O Lord our Lord, how wonderful is Thy name in all the earth!'
5:331
正如他論到創造時,並不單單觸及上面的能者,也把話語引下來,論到那些可憑感官察知的事物;
Just as, when discoursing about the creation, he does not touch upon the powers above alone, but brings his discourse down also to the things perceived by the senses;
5:332
so also, when teaching about the honour that has been bestowed upon men, having hinted at those ineffable and bodiless things which he enumerated, he now dwells more upon the things of sense, which were clearer than those to the grosser minds.
5:333
And what were these things? The earthly dominion that was given to him.
5:334
And the marvellous thing, and that which he especially hinted at, is that, having honoured him before the transgression, God did not, even after his sin, cast him out from that honour.
5:335
他說:「你叫他比天使微小一點」——就是說:「他犯了罪,你便定他死罪」;
'For Thou hast made him,' he says, 'a little lower than the angels'—that is, 'Thou hast condemned him to death when he sinned';
5:336
yet not, because Thou didst condemn him to death, didst Thou strip him of the gift.
5:337
Διά τοι.
For this very reason, having said the one thing, he then adds the other, showing the unspeakable loving-kindness of God: that even him who was made lower on account of his own transgression, God allowed to be crowned with the honour of glory, and did not annul his dominion.
5:338
But if He withdrew some small thing, this too was a part of His providential care.
5:339
因為在悖逆之前,人連野獸也能管轄;
For before the transgression man held even the wild beasts in his power;
5:340
but after the transgression He curtailed a little of this authority.
5:341
For even now man does rule over them by certain arts, yet with fear and trembling.
5:342
因為祂既沒有奪去全部的權柄,也沒有全然留下,乃是把那些對人有益、可供食物與勞作之用的,仍留給人管轄;
For He neither took away the whole dominion nor left the whole of it, but as many as were serviceable to man for food and for labour He left subject to him;
5:343
but the more savage beasts no longer, so that from the anxiety these cause he might be reminded of the ancient sin of the forefather Adam.
5:344
So that even from their not being wholly subject to us a great gain arose.
5:345
For what benefit is there in having the lion under one's hand and tamed? What advantage in having the leopard domesticated? None at all, but only boastfulness and folly.
5:346
For this reason, then, He left these beasts outside man's dominion, but made those useful to us tame: the ox that ploughs, the sheep that clothes the nakedness of the body, the beasts of burden fit for the carrying of loads, birds and fishes, so that our table too might be the more abundant.
5:347
因為正如一個要剝奪兒子部分繼承權的人,並不把他從一切之中逐出,只奪去某一部分,為要使他醒悟自制,神也是這樣行;
For just as one who partly disinherits his son does not cast him out of everything, but only of some portion, in order to bring him to soberness, so also does God;
5:348
因為人剝奪繼承權時,是奪去較大的部分,留下較小的;
for a man, when he disinherits, casts out the greater part and leaves the lesser;
5:349
but God, leaving the greater part, cast out but a little, and that too for our benefit, lest we should too easily gain the mastery over all the rest.
5:350
但這也是屬於神的眷顧;
But this too belongs to God's providential care;
5:351
因為神為要磨礪人的智慧、摧毀他的高傲、除去他那不合時宜的閒散──因為人樣樣都得來輕易,就翻覆敗壞了──便在生活的使用中攙入了某種艱難,既不容他一切都靠勞苦才得,也不容他一切都不勞而獲;
for whetting his wisdom, humbling his pride, and cutting off his untimely idleness—since, having everything with ease, he broke his neck in ruin—He mingled a certain difficulty also into the use of life, and permitted him neither to reap all things with toil nor all things without toil;
5:352
but the things needful He suffered him to have without labour and sweat, while the things of luxury with labour and sweat, desiring to curtail for us also this great licence.
5:353
But what benefit is there in wild animals? one will ask.
5:354
First, it works humility of soul, and makes man watchful in the contest, and reminds the exceedingly boastful of his own nature, whenever an irrational creature is a terror to him.
5:355
And from these creatures many remedies also arise for bodies that are sick.
5:356
But he who asks these things—why ever the wild beasts came to be—
5:357
will ask also why ever there are phlegm and bile within us. For these too, if provoked, come forth more grievous than a wild beast, and do injury to the whole body.
5:358
忿怒也存在我們裡面,情慾也是;
Anger too is set within us, and again desire;
5:359
and these do more grievous harm than wild beasts, to those who do not restrain and bridle them.
5:360
And why do I speak of anger and wrath, when even our own eye has clothed itself in passions worse than those of wild beasts, transfixing us upon a bitter lust? Yet not on this account shall we say:
5:361
Why have these things come to be? Rather, we shall render thanks to the Master for all things.
5:362
For what the strap is to a child, that a wild beast is to men.
5:363
For if, hemmed in by so many terrors, the greater part are lifted up into such folly, should you take away this bridle as well, consider to what lengths their wickedness would proceed.
5:364
正因如此,我們的身體也被如此造成──容易患病、能受痛苦、被無數的災病所圍困;
For this reason too our body has been so framed—liable to sickness, subject to suffering, besieged by countless ills;
5:365
地也是勞苦地出產它所有的;
and the earth yields its produce with toils;
5:366
and the whole of life is full of sweat.
5:367
Since the present life is a place of schooling, and ease and leisure destroy the greater part of mankind, for this reason He mingled with us occupation and toil, that, as if by certain bridles, the elation of the mind might be chastened.
5:368
But do you consider both the things that swim through the deep of the waters, and the things that soar aloft—the Master has subjected them to you through skill.
5:369
And why ever did he not go over all things visible—both plants and seeds and trees? From a part he hinted at the whole, and left the discourse concerning these things to those who love learning.
5:370
他又把它結束在與起初相同的收尾上;
And again he brings it to a close in the same ending from which he also began;
5:371
setting down the same words both before the demonstration and after the demonstration.
5:372
Let us then also continue perpetually saying the same things, marvelling at His providential care, astonished at His wisdom, His love of mankind, His forethought on our behalf.
5:373
And these things have been said by us by way of interpretation.
5:374
But if you please, let us handle the discourse also in a more contentious manner, and let us ask the Jews: where did infants sing forth a voice? and where did such a voice bring an enemy to nought? and when did His name become wonderful? But they would be able to name no other season than this, which shows forth the power of the truth more brightly than the sun.
5:375
我要觀看你手指所造的天;
I will behold the heavens, the works of Thy fingers;
5:376
and yet Moses had already said that In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth.
5:377
But against the Jews these things too suffice, together with what has been said before.
5:378
But since there are those who, without circumcision, imitate and emulate the ways of those men — the followers of Paul of Samosata — and who say that Christ came into being only from the time when He proceeded from Mary, let us ask these people as well: how, if Christ existed only from that time, did He fashion the heavens? For the Prophet says that the very One spoken of here — the One who out of the mouth of infants and nursing babes perfected praise — is the same One who wrought the heavens.
5:379
As the Maker of the heavens, He must then be prior to the heavens.
5:380
And He did not take His beginning from Mary, but was even before Mary.
5:381
And consider the wisdom of the Prophet.
5:382
For he does not introduce Him simply as Creator, but as one creating with great ease.
5:383
'I will behold the heavens, the works of Thy fingers.'
5:384
Not that God has fingers, but he calls the things that are seen the product of His smallest exertion — teaching us the things that are above us by means of names familiar to us.
5:385
Since indeed, when He says, 'He who measures the heaven with a span, and the earth in the hollow of His hand,'
5:386
he does not say this to signify an actual handful and span, but wishing to set forth the boundlessness of the power of God.
5:387
How then do some dare to call the Son a subordinate helper? For He who did not set in motion even His whole energy when the heaven had to be made —
5:388
why do I say His whole energy? Nay, not even the least part of it, but only the very smallest —
5:389
how could this One be a subordinate helper? How a helper, if 'Whatever the Father does, these the Son also does likewise'? For where is the 'likewise,' if the one is a helper and the other the Creator? And how does He say that the works are His, when at one time He says, 'Thou, Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thy hands,'
5:390
while here He says, 'I will behold the heavens, the works of Thy fingers'? For these are the works not of helpers, but of creators.
5:391
And even if someone be a helper, the work is not reckoned to him, but to the one who creates.
5:392
Therefore the things spoken earlier by Moses were said concerning the Son — namely, 'In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth,'
5:393
and 'Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea.'
5:394
For this same One, who out of the mouth of infants and nursing babes perfected praise, He it is who visited man.
5:395
So then, the things which Moses speaks concerning the Father, Paul applies to the Son, showing forth their great equality.
5:396
When therefore it is a matter of indifference to the saints to reckon the things said concerning the Father to the Son, and the things said concerning the Son to the Father — for 'all things came into being through Him' — where at all does the name of 'helper' find any place? One could nowhere see it.
5:397
'Yes,' he says, 'it is said, ‹Through Him.›'
5:398
What of it, since the same thing is said also concerning the Father? Hear how.
5:399
'God is faithful, through whom ye were called into the fellowship of His Son.'
5:400
'Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God.'
5:401
'For of Him, and through Him, and unto Him are all things.'
5:402
For what reason, then, do you call Him a subordinate helper? 'That we may honour the Father.'
5:403
'That all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father.'
5:404
'And he that honoureth not the Son,' it is plain that neither does he honour the Father.
5:405
'What then,' he says, 'shall I call the Son Father?' By no means.
5:406
But what then? That, while He remains Son, you may honour Him as the Father.
5:407
But if you call the Son Father, you have confounded all things.
5:408
While therefore this distinct property remains, the things pertaining to honour are common.
5:409
For this reason He spoke of Son and Father, that you might not confound the hypostases.
5:410
但倘若本質並非同一,祂又怎能要求同等的尊榮呢?他說:「那麼,基督為什麼說出許多卑微的話呢?」這既是為要教導謙卑,也是因祂披戴了肉體的緣故,又是因猶太人的麻木無知,也是因為必須循序漸進地把人類引入認識,並且因著聽者的不完全;
But if the substance were not the same, how could He demand equal honour? 'For what reason, then,' he says, 'does Christ utter many lowly things?' Both to teach humility, and on account of the enrobing of the flesh, and on account of the insensibility of the Jews, and because it was needful to lead the human race gradually into knowledge, and because of the imperfection of His hearers;
5:411
and besides this, He often speaks in accommodation to the supposition of His hearers.
5:412
因為那些更崇高的事,唯獨屬乎祂的尊位;
For the higher things belong to His dignity alone;
5:413
or rather, whatever you may say concerning God, it is far, exceedingly far short of that substance, and is a matter of condescension.
5:414
你想說什麼呢?說神是偉大的麼?然而論到神,這樣說仍是渺小的;
For what do you wish to say? That God is great? But this is a small thing to say of God;
5:415
因為那偉大之物,無論它何等偉大,總是有限的;
for the great, however great it may be, is something finite;
5:416
and this too is a small thing to say of God.
5:417
因為我知道,祂是沒有界限的;
For that He has no limit, I know;
5:418
But I do not even know what it is, nor where it is.
5:419
Though you should call Him wise, though you should call Him good, and these things without limit, you have said nothing worthy of that Essence; but there must be joined to the word a conception befitting God.
5:420
既然如此偉大的言辭尚且不能表明祂的尊榮,那麼那些竟然試圖將這些也加以削減的人,還能得著什麼寬恕呢?所以我們要逃避他們的聚集,既已學得那獨生者先於萬世的存在、祂創造的大能、祂本有的權柄、祂與父完全無差別、祂救贖經綸中的俯就、以及祂看顧我們那多樣的眷佑——這一切,以及比這更多的,凡以精確之心留意的人,都能從詩篇中所存的寶藏學到——就讓我們持守教義的精確,並顯出配得的品行,好叫我們也能得著將來的美福;
If such great things do not represent His worth, what pardon could they deserve who even attempt to curtail these? Let us therefore flee their assemblies, and having learned the pre-eternal existence of the Only-begotten, His creative power, His authoritative sovereignty, His unchangeableness in relation to the Father, the condescension of the dispensation, the manifold providence of His care for us — for all these things, and more than these, the treasure that lies stored in the Psalm teaches those who attend to it with exactness — let us guard the exactness of the doctrines, and let us display a manner of life that is worthy, that we may also attain the good things to come;
5:421
which may it be granted to us all to be counted worthy of, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be honour and glory unto the ages of ages.
