28:1
Verum, ne nos amatores Victorii temere illum aggressos esse lacerent, legant librum doctissimi et sanctissimi viri, Victoris videlicet Capuani episcopi, de Pascha, quod quindecimo calendas Maias putabatur celebrari debere, indictione autem decima tertia novies proconsule Basilio, et quanti a prudentibus et catholic s Ecclesiæ docloribus æstimatus sit suus magister invenient; cujus principium libri est: « Cum paschalis veneranda solemnitas, quanam die potissimum proveniret per anni præsentis indictionem tertiam decimam a nobis solliciie quærerelur, ei juxta patrum venerabilium constituta octavo calendarum Maiarum diceremus resurrectionem Domini procul dubio celebrandam;
But lest they tear us, as lovers of Victorius, for having attacked him rashly, let them read the book of that most learned and most holy man, namely Victor bishop of Capua, On the Pasch — which was thought it ought to be celebrated on the fifteenth before the Kalends of May, in the thirteenth indiction, when Basilius was for the ninth time proconsul — and they will find at what worth their master was esteemed by the prudent and catholic doctors of the Church. The beginning of his book is: 'When the venerable solemnity of Pascha was anxiously inquired of us, on which day above all it should fall in the present thirteenth indiction of the year, and we said, according to the established rule of the venerable Fathers, that the resurrection of the Lord must without doubt be celebrated on the eighth before the Kalends of May;'
28:2
aliquibus minime rationabilis visa est nostra responsio, eo quod Victorius quidam, in circulo paschali quem edidit,:'incr diem dominicæ resurrectionis adfixerit, licet ut hunc designaverit quem nos celebrandum puriter profitentur. i Et in proccessu operis: « Sed nunc, inquam, ordo expetit ut cyclorum quos Viclorius edidit patefaciam evidenter errores, dum nescit legitimum diem definire paschalem, ut cum in præteritis ostensus hoc modo fuerit deliquisse, in præsentibus ac futuris et auctoritate careat et occasionem pravæ persuasionis amittat. »
to some our answer seemed by no means reasonable, on the ground that a certain Victorius, in the paschal cycle which he published, had fixed the day of the Lord's resurrection — though he had designated it as the very one which we openly profess must be celebrated.' And further on in the work: 'But now, I say, the order of things demands that I clearly disclose the errors of the cycles which Victorius published, since he does not know how to define the lawful paschal day, so that, when in past times he is shown to have erred in this manner, in present and future times he may both lack authority and lose the occasion for wicked persuasion.'
