8:1
But after two days John of Antioch arrived, and learning that things had been done as we have said above, and after these the proceedings in the condemnation of Nestorius, and that those twelve chapters of Cyril had been received and confirmed in the very council, he was greatly indignant against Cyril as the author of sedition, because he had carried out Nestorius's condemnation most fervently. The bishops who had then assembled with John — that is, Alexander of Apamea, John of Damascus, Dexianus of Seleucia, Alexander of Hierapolis, Himerius of Nicomedia, Helladius of Tarsus, Maximus of Anazarbus, and the rest, thirty-four in number, who had then come together with him at Ephesus — complained about Cyril, saying:
'According to the command of the rulers, why were the bishops of the other provinces not awaited, so that the council might judge concerning the books of Nestorius and concerning the sayings of Cyril in the same way it had judged?' When therefore they had gathered at Ephesus, John inveighed against Cyril and Memnon thus: 'We did indeed desire, according to the rules of the holy Fathers and according to the letters of our most pious and Christian emperors, that the synod should be held in peace.
But since you, using audacity and sedition and a heretical mind, have sat in session alone — though we were drawing near, according to the letters of our most pious emperors — and have filled the holy synod with every kind of rabble, so that the chapters which agree with the perfidy and impiety of Apollinaris and Arius and Eunomius might not be examined, and you did not await the presence of the holy bishops who were summoned from every quarter by the most pious emperors, although the most magnificent count Candidianus had, both in writing and without writing, charged you to presume nothing of the sort but to await the common council of all the holy bishops:
therefore know that you are deposed and excluded from the episcopate — you, Cyril, bishop of Alexandria, and you, Memnon, bishop of this city — and excluded from all ecclesiastical ministry, inasmuch as you are wholly the authors of sedition and iniquity, who gave occasion for the rules of the Fathers and the imperial decrees to be trampled underfoot. But all the rest of you who consented with the seditious, acting against the laws and against the imperial decrees, are excommunicated, until, acknowledging your own offense, you do penance and accept the faith of the holy Fathers who were gathered at Nicaea, introducing nothing else new, and anathematize the heretical chapters which were set forth by Cyril, bishop of Alexandria, against the evan-

gelical and apostolic doctrine, and follow the letters of our most pious and most Christian emperors, which command that an examination concerning the faith be sought and carried out carefully and in peace.' This their interlocutory sentence John and those who were with him publicly set forth at Ephesus against Cyril and Memnon, and they conveyed the condemnation of both to the emperor by their letters, the beginning of which is: 'Your Piety, shining forth for the benefit of the whole world,' etc. After this there came from the West to the council the legates of Pope Coelestine, the bishops Arcadius and Projectus, and Philip, presbyter of the Roman Church.
While they were sitting, Cyril and Memnon presented petitions in the council, lodging a protest against John of Antioch and the bishops who were with him, that they should be summoned and render the reasons for their deposition. Therefore, having been summoned by the council through Daniel of Colonia in Second Cappadocia, Commodus of Tripolis in Lydia, and Timothy of Termae in the Hellespont — bishops — together with Musonius the notary, and with a reader, through a deacon acting as intermediary, they received this reply: 'Neither do you send to us, nor we to you, since we await the ruler's response concerning you.
Therefore Cyril, together with Memnon, wishing to avenge themselves, condemned John and all who had assembled with him, and both parties endured many evils at Ephesus with equal arrogance. Moreover the emperor, through John, count of the Sacred Largesses, wrote a sacred letter to the whole council and to the place, saying: 'We accept the condemnation of Nestorius, Cyril, and Memnon; but the other things which were done among you, we censure, preserving the Christian faith and rectitude which we received from our fathers and forefathers.' But when seven and seven bishops went out from the council, they satisfied the emperor, because the great and universal council, doing all things in due order, had condemned Nestorius.
8:8
Having learned these things, the emperor ordered them to enter the church and to ordain another bishop in place of Nestorius. And after this he ordered all the bishops to depart, each to his own region. And so John set out with his followers for Antioch, where, gathering very many bishops, he again condemned Cyril, who was by then at Alexandria. And as Socrates says, Nestorius, perceiving that through strife matters had come to a certain ruin, began to call Mary the Mother of God, saying: 'Let her even be called the Mother of God, and let the sad things which they have done be at rest.' But no one accepted him as saying such things out of repentance. Wherefore, condemned thus far, he was sent into exile to the Oasis.
8:9
Post damnationem autem ejus dura Constantinopoli turba contra Ecclesiam mota est, divisusque est populus propter tepidum ejus, sicut dictum est, tractatum; clerici vero communi decreto eum anathematizaverunt. Post biduum vero.] Imo post quintam a depositione Nestorii dict, ut tradit lib. VII, cap. 53, Socrates, qui res suis oculis subjectas scriptis man. davit.
After his condemnation, however, a harsh tumult was stirred up at Constantinople against the Church, and the people were divided on account of his lukewarm teaching, as has been said; but the clergy by common decree anathematized him. 'But after two days.' — Rather, on the fifth day after the deposition of Nestorius, as Socrates relates in book VII, ch. 53 — Socrates, who committed to writing matters set before his own eyes. 'The chapters received and confirmed.' — But indeed the third letter of Cyril to Nestorius with its chapters was read; yet there was no judgment of the Fathers concerning it, but only concerning the second, as is clear both from the acts of the council and from the Council of Chalcedon and the fifth synod:
Publice proponentes.] Repugnant acta Ephesina publicationem differentia in id temporis quu catholici Orientales schismaticos anathemate perculerunt; tunc enim primum facta publicatio est, ut Orientales se ab abstentis, quorum nulla esset auctoritas, damnatos ostenderent. Vocalia concilio per Danielem.] Fuit ista citatio tertia. Nam prima functi sunt Arcbelaus Myndi, Paulus Lampæ, et Petrus Parembolarum. Secunda Timotheus Termesi, Eustathius Docimi, et Eudoxius Chomatis. episcopi. Cone. Ephes. act. 4.
nor is it any wonder, for the second alone had a reply of Nestorius with which it could be compared, so that the Cyrilline doctrines might be shown to be opposed to the Nestorian. 'Publicly setting forth.' — The acts of Ephesus contradict this, deferring the publication to that time when the Catholic Orientals struck the schismatics with anathema; for then for the first time the publication was made, so that the Orientals might show themselves condemned by men who had abstained and whose authority was nil. 'Summoned to the council through Daniel.' — That citation was the third. For the first was carried out by Archelaus of Myndus, Paul of Lampe, and Peter of the Parembolae; the second by Timothy of Termesus, Eustathius of Docimium, and Eudoxius of Chomata — bishops. Council of Ephesus, act 4.
8:11
Volentes se ulcisci.] Hæc decent trium capitulorum defensorem Ibae exscriptorem. Jussit eos imperator ecclesiam ingredi.]
'Wishing to avenge themselves.' — These things befit the defender of the Three Chapters and the copyist of Ibas. 'The emperor ordered them to enter the church.' — Either the statement is mutilated and there is lacking the word by which the bishops of the Catholic party would be distinguished from the Orientals; or, contrary to the truth of history, all the bishops of whom there was discussion are said to have entered Constantinople to ordain a bishop — for only those of the Catholic party entered, as is clear from the very letters of the schismatics to their own people.
