16:313
Spare for me the young man Absalom? And when, in his early days, he was conversing with his brothers who envied him and looked askance at him because of the victory that was to come, consider how meekly he speaks, saying: Is it not but a word?
16:314
And what of Moses? Concerning those who stoned him, concerning those who sought to slay him, so far as it lay in their power — hear what he says:
16:315
「你若肯赦免他們的罪,就求你赦免;
'If Thou wilt forgive them their sin, forgive it;
16:316
but if not, blot me also out of the book which Thou hast written.'
16:317
And again, when others were stirring him up to jealousy and provoking him to indignation, he uttered those words full of wisdom, saying:
16:318
'Would that all the Lord's people were prophets!' And again, when his sister reviled him, how great was the supplication he offered on her behalf!
16:319
And from many other instances besides, one may behold his meekness, when, having fallen out of the land and being hindered from entering into Palestine, he yet discoursed with the Jews in all forbearance.
16:320
Yet nevertheless this meek man deemed it right that Dathan and Abiram and Korah should be swallowed up by the earth, when they rose up against the priesthood, and that the others should be burned with fire, when they offered strange fire.
16:321
And David too, that meek man, struck down Goliath, and routed the army, and won the victory.
16:322
因為這正是溫柔之人最顯著的標記:對於加害自己的事情置之不理,卻為受冤屈的人伸冤;
For this above all is the mark of a meek man: to let go the wrongs done against himself, but to avenge those who are wronged;
16:323
even as Christ also did.
16:324
For, having gone up upon the cross, He said:
16:325
And again, lamenting over Jerusalem, He said:
16:326
'How often would I have gathered your children together, and ye would not!
16:327
behold, your house is left unto you desolate.'
16:328
當祂被打時,祂並不還手回打,倒向那打祂的人申辯;
And when He was smitten, He did not smite in return, but made His defence to him that smote Him;
16:329
當祂被稱為被鬼附的時候,祂卻趕出了鬼;
and when He was called one possessed by a demon, He cast out demons;
16:330
and when He was called a deceiver and an enemy of God, He led them by the hand into the kingdom.
16:331
祂又吩咐門徒無論在何處都要甘心受鞭打、被逼迫、被驅逐,並要甘居卑下的地位;
And He commanded His disciples to be everywhere scourged, persecuted, driven out, and to accept the lower place;
16:332
'For whosoever among you willeth to be first,' He saith, 'let him be your servant.'
16:333
And He adduced the example from His own case, saying:
16:334
'Even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.'
16:335
And if He drives out demons, and wars against the devil, and destroys deceit, this too is above all a mark of meekness: to loose all wickedness, to set free those held captive, to hold back the demons that plot against us, and to deliver from their terrors those who have been assailed.
16:336
「為真理、溫柔和公義」這話是甚麼意思呢?他既已述說了戰爭,述說了軍陣,顯明了那披甲的戰士;
And what does it mean, 'Because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness'? He has told of the war, He has told of the battle-array, He has shown the warrior in his armour;
16:337
he now speaks also of the achievements of His kingdom, he tells the form of the trophy, he declares the nature of the victory.
16:338
因為其他一切作王的人爭戰,或是為了城邑,或是為了財貨,或是出於仇恨,或是出於虛榮;
For all other men who reign make war either for the sake of cities, or of riches, or out of enmity, or out of vainglory;
16:339
但祂卻不是為了這些事,乃是為真理,好將真理栽種在地上;
but He for none of these things, but because of truth, that He might plant it in the earth;
16:340
又為溫柔,好使那些比野獸更兇殘的人變為溫柔;
and because of meekness, that He might make meek those who were more savage than wild beasts;
16:341
and because of righteousness, that He might make righteous those who were tyrannized by lawlessness, first by grace, and secondly also by
16:342
'And Thy right hand shall guide Thee wondrously.'
16:343
Another version: 'And Thy right hand shall enlighten Thee unto terrible things.'
16:344
Another: 'And Thy right hand shall show Thee terrible things.'
16:345
你看見他如何再次向我們敞開那成就這些事者的尊榮嗎?因為正如在前面,他既說到兵器和刀劍,便上升到榮美的主題,把聽者引領到非物質的概念上去;
Dost thou see how once more he has opened to us the dignity of Him who accomplishes such things? For just as above, having spoken of arms and sword, he ascended to the theme of beauty, and led the hearer up toward incorporeal conceptions;
16:346
照樣他又降到那更為粗淺的層面——弓與箭——並漸漸地再次把聽者引上去,述說那戰爭的緣由:真理、溫柔和公義;
so again, having descended to what is more material—the bow and the arrows—he little by little leads the hearer up once more, telling the causes of the war: truth and meekness and righteousness;
16:347
then again also the manner of the victory.
16:348
And of what sort is this? 'And Thy right hand,' he saith, 'shall guide Thee wondrously.'
16:349
And what he means is this:
16:350
The nature itself suffices for itself, the power itself suffices for itself, both to perceive what must be done and to bring them to their fulfilment.
16:351
另一位譯者說得好:「你的右手是可畏的」;
And well did another say, 'Terrible is Thy right hand';
16:352
for very terrible are the things accomplished, and full of awe.
16:353
死亡被消解,陰間被撕裂,樂園被開啟,諸天被展開,眾鬼被封口,下界與上界相交融,神成了人,人坐上了君王的寶座;
Death was undone, Hades was rent asunder, Paradise was opened, heaven was spread wide, demons were muzzled, the things below were mingled with the things above, God became man, man sits upon a royal throne;
16:354
the hopes of resurrection were opened, immortal expectations, the enjoyment of unutterable good things, and all the other things which He accomplished through His own coming.
16:355
For this reason he said, 'Your right hand shall guide you to these fearful things,' showing that nature and power are sufficient in themselves, he says, both to discover and to accomplish the tasks that lie before them.
16:356
Your right hand shall guide you wondrously.
16:357
That is to say: We must marvel not only at the deeds accomplished, but also that they were accomplished in a manner beyond all expectation.
16:358
因為藉著死,死被廢除了;藉著咒詛,咒詛被除去了,祝福被賜下了;
For through death was death undone; through a curse was the curse abolished, and blessing bestowed;
16:359
through eating we were formerly cast out, and through eating we were brought back again.
16:360
A virgin cast us out of paradise; through a Virgin we found life eternal.
16:361
By the very things through which we were condemned, through those same things we were crowned.
16:362
Pondering these things, then, the Prophet said:
16:363
Your right hand shall guide you wondrously.
16:364
Is there any need of weapons? Any need of a broadsword, of bows and arrows? Do you see how nature, how power, is self-sufficient in itself? But behold him again, like a most excellent dancer, descending once more from lofty things to grosser matters.
16:365
Your arrows are sharpened, O mighty one.
16:366
Peoples shall fall under you, in the heart of the king's enemies.
16:367
Another translator says: The king's enemies are struck to the heart.
16:368
Observe again how, when he made mention of arrows, he added the word 'mighty,' that you might learn that he has no need of arrows, but is himself sufficient unto himself.
16:369
And the sequence of the words is this:
16:370
Your arrows are sharpened, O mighty one, in the heart of the king's enemies.
16:371
But the clause, 'Peoples shall fall under you,' is inserted in the middle.
16:372
Here, then, the interpretation seems to me to be twofold:
16:373
for either he speaks of the Jewish capture, and the enslavement of the city and its utter destruction, or, by way of a higher application, he calls the power of the word 'arrows.'
16:374
因為這道比箭更銳利,走遍了普天下,觸動了那些先前作王仇敵之人的心,不是要殺滅他們,乃是要吸引他們歸向自己;
For sharper than arrows it traversed the whole inhabited world, and touched the heart of those who before this were the king's enemies, not to slay them, but to draw them to himself;
16:375
which is exactly what happened in the case of Paul.
16:376
For one would not err in calling that word an arrow, which, hurled from heaven, touched the heart of the one who before this was an enemy, and made him a friend.
16:377
Peoples shall fall under you.
16:378
Do you see the triumph of the war? The bringing near of those who before this were in rebellion? The teaching? The catechizing? For this falling down, this being 'under him,' is for all men the ground and root of exaltation.
16:379
For having freed them from senselessness and empty pride, and from the deception of the demons, he subjected them to himself.
16:380
In this way another prophet also depicts him as stained with blood, speaking thus:
16:381
Who is this that comes from Edom? The redness of his garments from Bozrah? Nowhere there are weapons, nor bows and arrows, but garments.
16:382
那處的話語較為粗顯,卻又比此處更為精微;
The saying there is more material, yet more subtle than this;
16:383
and there too, little by little, he raises the discourse toward things incorporeal.
16:384
For when the prophet asks whence come the red garments, he says:
16:385
I have trodden the winepress all alone, showing the ease of the victory, and that he had no one to work together with him, but that he was sufficient unto himself.
16:386
For just as here he says, 'Your right hand shall guide you wondrously,'
16:387
so also there: 'I have trodden the winepress all alone.'
16:388
For just as it is easy for the treader of the winepress to tread down the clusters of grapes,
16:389
神成就他所願的事也照樣容易;
so too is it for God to accomplish whatever he wills;
16:390
or rather, not even so, but far more easily still.
16:391
Your throne, O God, is unto the age of the age.
16:392
A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
16:393
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness.
16:394
Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
16:395
Another translator renders it: 'Thy throne, O God, is everlasting,' and so on.
16:396
But the Hebrew renders the phrase 'O God, thy God' as 'Eloim, Eloach.'
16:397
What could the Jew say here? For of whom are these words spoken? And what could the heretic say? For if indeed he should claim that it is said concerning the Father, 'Thy throne, O God, is unto ages of ages,'
16:398
how then will what follows fit him?
16:399
'Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee.' For surely the Father is not the Christ, nor has He Himself been anointed.
16:400
由此可見,這段話乃是論到獨生子而說的,前面的話也是論到他而說的;
Whence it is clear that the discourse is concerning the Only-begotten, concerning whom the foregoing words were also spoken;
16:401
which Isaiah too declared, saying, 'Of his kingdom there shall be no end.'
16:402
But perhaps someone might inquire why on earth he now discourses concerning the Godhead, having first made his discourse concerning the dispensation? Because Matthew too does likewise.
16:403
For he begins from the flesh, and opens his prologue thus:
16:404
'The book of the generation of Jesus Christ.'
16:405
路加和馬可也照樣如此;
In like manner also Luke and Mark;
16:406
but John alone proceeds differently.
16:407
For having first spoken concerning the Godhead, 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,' and having discoursed much concerning it, then he said:
16:408
'And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.'
16:409
And though he employed the writing of his Gospel in a manner opposite to the others, yet even so he displayed a great harmony with them.
16:410
有人問:「在相反的事上竟有和諧,這怎麼說得通呢?」你豈不知道,吃也與不吃相反,喝與不喝相反,給與不給相反嗎?醫生也常常行許多這樣的事,並非自相矛盾,反倒是完全一致的;
'And how,' one asks, 'could it stand to reason that there is harmony in what is opposite?' Dost thou not know that eating too is opposite to not eating, and drinking to not drinking, and giving to not giving? And often a physician does many such things, not warring against himself, but in fullest agreement with himself;
16:411
for he looks to one end, the health of the patient.
16:412
This very thing came to pass also in the case of the evangelists.
16:413
Since summer too is opposite to winter, yet it looks to one end, the ripening of the fruits and their abundance.
16:414
And the whole world is composed of contraries, yet it displays much harmony for our life.
16:415
And Christ too came in a manner opposite to John.
16:416
'For John came,' he says, 'neither eating nor drinking, and they say,'
16:417
'The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber.'
16:418
But though the things done were contrary, yet they nevertheless looked to one end, the salvation of those who were to be caught in the net.
16:419
Thus indeed this ordering also, concerning the Godhead and concerning the dispensation, though it was done by John in a manner opposite to the others, was nevertheless in fullest agreement with them.
16:420
因為在起初,當道尚未被撒下之時,適宜的是駐足於論到救恩安排的講論,並在論到肉身的教導上操練人,從那較為粗淺、可感知的事物起頭作序言;
For at the beginning, while the word had not yet been sown, it was fitting to dwell upon the discourse of the dispensation, and to train men in the teaching concerning the flesh, beginning the prologue from the grosser and more perceptible things;
16:421
but when the things of knowledge had been made firm, and men had received the preaching, then it was opportune to begin from on high.
16:422
For this reason the prophets too, whenever they discourse concerning him, make their beginning and their opening words from the dispensation.
16:423
Observe then how Micah begins from below:
16:424
'And thou, Bethlehem, land of Judah, art in no wise least among the...'
16:425
'For out of thee shall come forth for me a ruler, who shall shepherd my people Israel.'
16:426
And yet it was not the Godhead that was from Bethlehem, but the flesh.
16:427
But he did not remain in this alone, but also ascended to the Godhead, saying:
16:428
'And his goings forth are from the beginning, from the days of eternity.'
16:429
'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.'
16:430
Seest thou how this one too ascended from the flesh to the Godhead? And again elsewhere consider this very thing coming to pass:
16:431
'Unto us a child is born, and unto us a son is given, and his name is called, the messenger of great counsel, wonderful counsellor, mighty God, potentate, prince of peace, father of the age to come.'
16:432
Seest thou how again, starting from a child and from the dispensation according to the flesh, as if ascending by certain steps, he takes his stand upon the Godhead? Thus also His Father was first made known from the creation.
16:433
'For his invisible things,' says Paul, 'from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.'
16:434
For this very reason He also often fashions Himself into a perceptible appearance, gradually leading up the race of men to conceptions of the incorporeal.
16:435
And why do you marvel if in matters of doctrine he thus employed this method of accommodation, when in the case of precepts and of commandments he does this very same thing? For this very reason the prophet has here so used his language, ascending from the flesh to the Godhead — for the 'lips' belong to the flesh — and again descending from the Godhead to the flesh, and by the variety of his discourse serving the salvation of those under instruction.
16:436
'Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever.'
16:437
By 'throne' here he means not a throne simply, but the kingdom.
16:438
他在這裡稱這寶座為永遠的,在別處卻稱它為崇高的;
Here he calls it eternal, but elsewhere lofty;
16:439
'For I saw,' he says, 'the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up.'
16:440
還有另一位先知看見他坐在榮耀的寶座上;
And yet another prophet beholds Him sitting upon a throne of glory;
16:441
而大衛則顯明那寶座也是慈愛的寶座;
while David shows the throne to be one of lovingkindness also;
16:442
'For mercy,' he says, 'and judgment are the establishment of His throne.'
16:443
And all these things have been said concerning His kingdom: that it is without end — for this is what 'for ever and ever' means — that it is glorious, that it is exalted, that it is mighty and strong.
16:444
Again, that it is without beginning, when he says:
16:445
'Your kingdom is a kingdom of all the ages.'
16:446
As, then, the throne is a symbol of the kingdom, so also is the rod a symbol both of the kingdom and of the judicial authority.
16:447
'A rod of uprightness is the rod of Your kingdom.'
16:448
For there justice is pure, there rectitude is pure, nothing there is overshadowed.
16:449
願那些狂亂與癲狂的人側耳而聽;
Let those who are frenzied and deranged give ear;
16:450
or rather, those who are worse than these.
16:451
And who are these? Those who bring charges against the providence of God, and who say:
16:452
「為什麼這事那事竟這樣發生了呢?」試想,這豈不荒謬嗎:一個人坐在木匠旁邊,看他劈木、鋸木,卻不向他索取解釋,也不追究緣由;
'Why has this and that come to pass thus?' For how is it not absurd that a man, sitting beside a carpenter and watching him split and saw timber, does not demand an account or a reckoning of him;
16:453
又如醫生割開並灼燒病人的肉,把他關在小屋裡,用飢餓折磨他,然而旁邊的人也好、受苦的病人自己也好,都不去干涉所行的事;
and though a physician cuts and cauterizes the flesh, and shuts the sick man up in a little room, and racks him with hunger, neither any of the bystanders nor the sufferer himself meddles with the things that are being done;
16:454
又如舵手拉緊繩索,鬆放船帆,又再放出並使船側沒入水中,沒有人去多管閒事或干涉這些匠人的每一舉動,反倒安靜緘默,儘管這些人往往在其技藝上出錯;
and though the pilot draws taut a rope, and slackens the sails, and again lets them out and drives the ship's side under the water, no one busies himself or meddles with each of these craftsmen, but they keep quiet and are silent, even though these men often err in their craft;
16:455
然而對於那不可言喻的智慧、那不可言喻的慈愛、這無窮無盡的眷顧,他們卻要去干涉、去打探?這豈不是何等的瘋狂呢?他們既不肯輕易地施以援手,也不肯為受屈者和貧困者破費錢財;
yet the unspeakable wisdom, the unspeakable lovingkindness, this boundless care — of these they make it their business to meddle and pry? And of what madness is this not the mark? And to help, and to spend money on behalf of the wronged and the needy, they would not readily choose;
16:456
but they investigate throughout: why is this man poor, why is that man destitute, why is this other one...
16:457
你這惡僕、愚昧人哪!你不俯首,不責備自己,不給舌頭套上嚼環,不約束自己的心思,也不放下這種對這類事的干涉,反而把這打探之心轉向你自己的生活嗎?你當俯視自己所行的事,俯視你罪惡的汪洋;你若真是好奇又愛打探的,就當向自己追討你言語與行為的清帳,追究你所說的惡言、所行的惡事;
O wicked and foolish servant! You do not bow your head, nor condemn yourself, nor put a bridle upon your tongue, nor restrain your mind, nor, letting go this meddling in such things, turn this prying upon your own life? Peer into the deeds done by you, into the sea of your sins, and if you are curious and given to prying, demand of yourself a reckoning for the words, for the deeds, which you have spoken wickedly, which you have done wickedly;
16:458
but as it is, leaving yourself unexamined — though this negligence brings punishment, while such self-scrutiny brings salvation — you sit passing sentence upon God, and adding to your own sins.
16:459
Do you not hear the Prophet saying to Him, 'A rod of uprightness is the rod of Your kingdom'? And another again:
16:460
'His judgment shall go forth as light.'
16:461
But if you do not know all the ways of your Master with exactness, then for this very reason glorify Him, for this reason above all worship Him — because of the unspeakable greatness of His majesty, because of the incomprehensibility of His providence, because of the manifold and wise character of His care.
16:462
'You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness.'
16:463
For since he had spoken above of the achievements, the victories, the trophies, the salvation of the world — that He filled it with truth, with meekness, with righteousness — showing that it was nothing improbable that these things should come to pass, he next discourses concerning the dignity of Him who accomplished them: that He is God, that He is King, that He is without end, that He is a judge who takes no bribes, that He is a lover of the just, that He is a hater of evil.
16:464
'Since He is such a one,' he says, 'therefore such things have been accomplished by Him.'
16:465
'Let no one, therefore, disbelieve,' he says.
16:466
For He who accomplished so many things both had the power and the will, and so brought them to pass.
16:467
Having, then, spoken of the lofty things of His Godhead, he again brings the discourse down to the flesh, and says:
16:468
'Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You.'
16:469
Another version says, 'For this cause He anointed You.'
16:470
That is, for having accomplished the things spoken of, he says — for casting out lawlessness, for planting righteousness, for doing the very things you did.
16:471
But do not you be troubled at hearing that these things are reckoned to the Father.
16:472
因為他說這些話,並非要奪去他的功績,而是把子的工作歸於父,正如他也說父的工作是子自己的一樣;
For it is not in order to deprive Him of the achievements that he says these things, but in ascribing the Son's works to the Father, even as he says that the Father's works are His own;
16:473
'For all that is Mine is Yours, and Yours is Mine.'
16:474
Since concerning the resurrection also Paul, when discoursing, says that 'God raised Him from the dead.'
16:475
Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
16:476
But what does it mean, 'The oil of gladness'? And indeed Christ was nowhere anointed with oil, but with the Holy Spirit.
16:477
For this reason he added, 'Above thy fellows.'
16:478
signifying this very thing, that no one was anointed as he was.
16:479
For there were indeed many anointed ones before him, yet not one of them in such a manner as he.
16:480
正如有許多羊羔,惟獨他是那卓越的一位;
just as there were many lambs, but he was the choice one;
16:481
so also there were many sons, but he is the Only-begotten.
16:482
因為凡屬他的都是卓越超群的,不僅是那屬乎他神性的,也包括那屬乎他救贖之工的安排;
For all that is his is choice and surpassing, not only what pertains to his divinity, but also what pertains to the dispensation of his incarnation;
16:483
for no one was anointed with such a Spirit as this.
16:484
但他若稱之為油,你不要希奇;
But if he calls it oil, do not marvel;
16:485
for being a prophet, he speaks in a more enigmatic manner.
16:486
And well did he say, 'Of gladness,' so that he might show that it is a matter of joy.
16:487
For the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.
16:488
Another translator rendered it, 'With the oil of splendour.'
16:489
But the Hebrew has 'Sason,' that is, of adornment, of glory, of ornament.
16:490
And if it also means gladness, this too is true.
16:491
所以,正如你聽見「刀劍」時不會想到刀劍,聽見「箭與弓」時不會想到弓與箭,而是想到他那成就了我先前所說之事的作為;
Therefore, just as when you hear of a sword you do not think of a sword, and when you hear of arrows and bows you do not think of bows and arrows, but rather of that operation of his which accomplished such things as I said before;
16:492
so also when you hear of oil, do not simply suppose it to be oil, but understand the anointing.
16:493
For indeed the oil was a symbol of the Spirit, and it was the Spirit that was the principal and necessary thing.
16:494
既然如此,你稱他為基督(受膏者)便當毫不遲疑,因為亞伯拉罕也被稱為受膏者,眾先知也是如此,然而他們並非都用油受膏;
Since, then, this is so, have no hesitation in calling him Christ, for Abraham too was called an anointed one, as were the prophets, yet not all of them were anointed with oil;
16:495
'Touch not mine anointed ones, and do my prophets no harm.'
16:496
But when was Christ anointed? When the Spirit came upon him as in the form of a dove.
16:497
here he calls all the spiritual ones anointed, just as John says:
16:498
'From his fulness have we all received.'
16:499
But concerning him it is said, 'God giveth not the Spirit by measure.'
16:500
And again, 'I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh.'
16:501
但在他身上並非是「從那靈分出的一部分」,乃是全備的聖靈臨到;
But there it was not out of the Spirit, but the whole Spirit that came;
16:502
'God giveth not the Spirit by measure.'
16:503
'Myrrh and stacte and cassia from thy garments.'
16:504
Another translator rendered, 'Upon thy raiment.'
16:505
Another, 'All thy garments.'
16:506
Now some say that by these words the prophet is hinting at the tomb, while others say he is indicating the changed and distinctive character of the anointing.
16:507
For the ancient anointing oil was not composed of these perfumes, but of others.
16:508
And that you may learn that this is a different manner of anointing, by the difference of the materials he showed the difference of the operation.
16:509
And the phrase, 'From thy garments,' shows that his very garments also were full of grace.
16:510
Thus indeed the woman with the issue of blood staunched the fountains of her blood by touching the hem of his garment.
16:511
然而無論當採取這一種還是那一種解釋,都沒有任何理由攔阻;
But whether this or that interpretation is to be adopted, no argument forbids;
16:512
for both are acceptable to me.
16:513
Just as, then—for nothing forbids us to say the same things again—when you hear of a bow and a sword,
16:514
以及一切這類的事物,你都不是按著感官字面的意思去領會的;
and all such things, you do not hear them in a sensible, literal way;
16:515
In the same way, when you hear of myrrh and cassia, do not understand them in a sensible manner, but in a spiritual one.
16:516
'Out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad, the daughters of kings in thine honour.'
16:517
Another translator says, 'Out of the ivory temples, whence they have made thee glad, in honouring thee.'
16:518
Another renders it, 'Among thine honoured ones.'
16:519
他既述說了自己所成就的事,就也講到隨著他的功績而來的尊榮;
Having told of the things he accomplished, he speaks also of the honour that followed upon his achievements;
16:520
namely, that he is destined to be worshipped in costly temples.
16:521
For in ancient times this material especially was precious, and that which was made of ivory was much sought after.
16:522
Wherefore another prophet also said:
16:523
'Woe to them that sleep upon beds of ivory.'
16:524
And he shows again that the preaching will lay hold not only of common men, but will also subdue kingdoms, and they will raise up for him costly houses.
16:525
These things are even now seen coming to pass in the events themselves.
16:526
For the prophet, wishing to show the might of the preaching, tells how it captured, how it laid hold of women, of common men, of the rich, of the very men who wear the diadems and of those who dwell with them, so that everywhere they build temples to God.
16:527
Then, since he had at length come to this theme, he weaves it out more fully, sketching those who serve and supplicate him.
16:528
他指明萬民如何降服,他如何觸動了他們的心,如何勝過了仇敵,他的右手如何使他亨通,他如何栽植了真理、溫柔與公義;
And showing how the peoples fell subject, how he touched their heart, how he prevailed over the enemies, how his right hand prospered him, how he planted truth and meekness and righteousness;
16:529
and again he uses the discourse metaphorically, sketching the Church as in an image, even the things which the apostles afterwards spoke, the one saying:
16:530
'I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you a chaste virgin to Christ;'
16:531
and another, 'He that hath the bride is the bridegroom;'
16:532
and another, 'The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king, who made a marriage for his son;'
16:533
這些事這位先知也預先宣告了,他把新婦同時也當作王后引介出來;
these things this prophet too foretells, introducing the bride as at once also a queen;
16:534
wherefore he says, 'The queen stood at thy right hand.'
16:535
Another renders it, 'She was set up as a pillar,' that is, she stood firmly, she stood unshaken, which is what Christ says elsewhere, that 'The gates of hell shall not prevail against her.'
16:536
Do you see the excess of honour? Do you see the weight of dignity? To what a height has he raised her that was trodden under foot, that was dragged along the ground, so that she stands beside him? Have you learned to what a dignity she has ascended — she the captive, the alienated, the harlot, the accursed? She stands together with the ministering powers.
16:537
For the Son indeed, inasmuch as he is of equal honour, sits at the right hand, but she stands.
16:538
For even if she is a queen, yet she is of created substance.
16:539
'He raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.' But attend to the exactness.
16:540
He did not simply say, 'He raised us up together and made us sit together;'
16:541
For since our Head is above, he says, and we are the body, when the Head sits above, we too partake of the honour, even though we stand.
16:542
'Clothed about in vesture wrought with gold, in raiment of divers colours.'
16:543
Another renders it, 'In a diadem of gold from Ophir.'
16:544
正如論到那君王時,我們並非想到弓箭,照樣,論到新婦時,也不要想到衣裳;
Just as in the case of the King we do not understand bows and arrows, so in the case of the bride do not think of garments;
16:545
but through the things of sense take up thoughts befitting God.
16:546
For that no one might suspect any such thing, he went on to say:
16:547
'All the glory of the king's daughter is within.'
16:548
然而衣裳在萬物中乃是最外在的,是為了給人看的而存在的——但那是就它們屬乎肉身之物而言;
And yet garments are of all things the most outward, and exist for the sake of what is seen — but that is when they are bodily;
16:549
but when the discourse is about spiritual things, turn the eye of the understanding inward.
16:550
This garment the King wove, and clothed her with it through baptism.
16:551
'For as many of you,' he says, 'as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.'
16:552
因為在此以前,她原是赤身露體、羞恥難堪,暴露在一切從路上經過的人面前;
For before this she was naked and unseemly, lying exposed to all that passed by on the way;
16:553
but from the time she put on this garment, she was borne up to that height, and was counted worthy of the standing at the right hand.
16:554
And well does he call it also of divers colours.
16:555
For the garment is not of a single form.
16:556
For it is not by grace alone that we are saved; there is need also of faith, and after faith, of virtue as well.
16:557
But the discourse here is not about garments.
16:558
For neither was the Spirit so concerned as to describe in detail a woman's golden garments.
16:559
For if Isaiah reproaches women who adorn themselves, and everywhere the things of luxury are cast out,
16:560
how then could he here have praised a woman for adorning herself? 'Hearken, O daughter, and behold, and incline thine ear, and forget thy people and the house of thy father.'
16:561
'And the king shall desire thy beauty.'
16:562
Another translator says, 'That he may desire.'
16:563
'For he is thy Lord.'
16:564
Another says, 'For he himself is thy Lord.'
16:565
Another says, 'And worship thou him.'
16:566
'And the daughter of Tyre shall come with gifts.'
16:567
Another says, 'And the mighty daughter shall bring gifts.'
16:568
'The rich among the people shall entreat thy favour.'
16:569
你可看見,這裡沒有一件是屬感官的,沒有一件是屬肉體的,而是一切都屬乎靈?因為新婦怎能同時是那一位的女兒呢?而女兒又怎能是新婦呢?在屬肉體的事上,這是不可能的,乃是這是一回事,那是另一回事;
Do you see how nothing is sensible, how nothing is bodily, but all things are spiritual? For how is the bride daughter of the same one? And how is the daughter the bride? In the case of bodily things this cannot be, but this is one thing and that is another;
16:570
but in the case of God both are possible.
16:571
For he himself begat her anew through baptism, and he himself also espoused her to himself.
16:572
'Hearken, O daughter, and behold.'
16:573
他賜給她兩樣東西:一是藉著言語而來的教導,二是藉著神蹟而來的所見,以及那藉著信而來的;
He furnished her with two things: both the teaching that comes through words, and the sight that comes through miracles, and that which comes through faith;
16:574
and some things he gave, while others he promised.
16:575
'Hearken therefore to my words, behold my miracles and my works, and give heed to my exhortations.'
16:576
And observe what sort of command he issues first.
16:577
'Forget thy people and the house of thy father.'
16:578
For since he espoused her from among the nations, this is what he first commands her: to scrape off that former way of life, to put it away from her memory, to cast it out of her mind, exhorting her not only to flee from those things, but not even to remember them.
16:579
'And forget thy people and the house of thy father.'
16:580
And when he says both 'people' and 'house,' he means all the things done there among them, both their manner of life and their doctrines.
16:581
'And the king shall desire thy beauty.'
16:582
Do you see that the discourse is not about bodily beauty?
16:583
For if you do these things, then you shall be beautiful, then the king shall desire your beauty.
16:584
And yet these things do not produce bodily beauty.
16:585
For indeed among unbelievers too we see bodily beauty, and comely women who are Greeks.
16:586
這番話並不是關於肉體的美貌,他藉著說這美貌乃是由她的順服所構成,就顯明了這一點;
That the discourse is not about bodily beauty, he shows by saying that this beauty is constituted out of her obedience;
16:587
and obedience does not constitute bodily beauty, but the beauty of the soul.
16:588
For if you do these things, he says, then you shall be beautiful, then beloved of the Bridegroom.
16:589
'For he is thy Lord.'
16:590
Behold, he has been revealed as Father and Bridegroom and Master.
16:591
For since he commanded her to withdraw,
16:592
to forsake her fathers, to forget her peoples, to cast out the old custom, he shows that the justice of these commands is very great, and that the consequence of the argument is compelling, and that this ought indeed to come to pass.
16:593
For if he himself is thy father, and he himself the bridegroom, and he himself the lord, it would be just that, having withdrawn from all those, you should dedicate yourself to him.
16:594
而他並沒有說:「因為他是你的父」;
And he did not say, 'For he is thy father';
16:595
But rather, 'Because He Himself is thy Lord,' that by this above all He might win her over.
16:596
For He who is thy Lord and Master and Father chose also to become thy Bridegroom.
16:597
Nay rather, this very fact of His becoming Lord is itself a mark of great solicitude and love for mankind—that He should choose for Himself as His own her who had been the slave of demons and trodden underfoot by error.
16:598
And He made her not only a slave, but also a daughter and a bride.
16:599
'Forget thine own people, and thy father's house.'
16:600
For thou art not coming to some stranger, but to Him who made thee, who is nearer to thee than all those others, and who cares for thee and takes thought of thee.
16:601
For He Himself is thy Lord and Father, and He Himself has given thee all things.
16:602
καὶ.
'And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with gifts.'
16:603
What is this sequence of thought? A most excellent one.
16:604
For this is the greatest kind of exhortation.
16:605
因為祂的能力實在浩大;
For great indeed is His strength;
16:606
and all shall be obedient to Him.
