12:1
'I speak after the manner of men, because of the weakness of your flesh.'
12:2
'For just as you presented the members of your flesh as slaves to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness unto sanctification.'
12:3
既然他要求了生活上極大的嚴謹,吩咐他們向世界死了,向邪惡死了,並在罪的活動面前保持不動;而他似乎是在說某種偉大而沉重、超越人性的事;
Since he had demanded much strictness of life, bidding them be dead to the world, and to have died to wickedness, and to remain unmoved toward the working of sins, and he seemed to be saying something great and burdensome, transcending human nature;
12:4
他為要顯明自己所要求的並不過分,甚至還不及那已享受如此大恩之人所理當獻上的,乃是極為適中而輕省的,就從相反的事來加以證明,說:「我照著人的常情說」;
wishing to show that he demands nothing excessive, nor even so much as it behoved one who had enjoyed so great a gift to render, but something very moderate and light, he establishes it from the contraries, and says, 'I speak after the manner of men';
12:5
彷彿是說:從人的推理,從日常習慣中所發生的事來說;
as if he were saying: from human reasonings, from the things that come to pass in ordinary custom;
12:6
for the appellation of 'human' indicates that which is moderate.
12:7
For indeed elsewhere too he says:
12:8
他所承擔的無非是人性所能及的;
He has taken hold of nothing that is not human;
12:9
that is to say, something measured and modest.
12:10
For just as you presented your members as slaves to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness unto sanctification.
12:11
And yet the difference between the two masters is great; nevertheless I demand an equal measure of servitude.
12:12
本當獻上遠更多的服事,並且要多得多,因為這位主的統治遠比那一位更為尊大、更為美善;
Indeed it would have been fitting to render far more, and by so much the more as this mastery is greater and better than that one;
12:13
yet, on account of your weakness, I demand nothing more.
12:14
And he did not say, 'of your resolve,' nor 'of your zeal,' but 'of your flesh,' making his exhortation less burdensome.
12:15
何況那一邊是不潔,這一邊是成聖;
And yet the one is uncleanness, the other sanctification;
12:16
the one is lawlessness, the other righteousness.
12:17
And who is so wretched and miserable as not to bring even so much zeal to the service of Christ as he brought to that of sin and of the devil? Hear then what follows, and you will clearly know that we do not render even this little.
12:18
For since, stated thus simply, it did not seem credible or acceptable, and no one could bear to hear that he does not serve Christ as much as he served the devil, by what follows he establishes it and makes it credible, bringing that former servitude into the midst and telling how they served.
12:19
'For when you were slaves of sin,' he says, 'you were free in regard to righteousness.'
12:20
And what he means is this:
12:21
when you lived in wickedness and impiety and the uttermost evils, you lived with such obedience that you did nothing good at all.
12:22
因為「你們就不被義約束」正是這個意思;
For this is what it means, 'You were free in regard to righteousness';
12:23
that is, you were not subject to it, but wholly estranged from it.
12:24
For you did not apportion the manner of your servitude between righteousness and sin, but gave yourselves wholly over to wickedness.
12:25
Therefore now also, since you have passed over to righteousness, give yourselves wholly to virtue, doing nothing at all of vice, so that you may display at least an equal measure.
12:26
何況不僅兩位主人之間的差別極大,就連這服事本身的差別也極大;
And yet it is not only that the difference between the masters is great, but the difference of the servitude itself is also great;
12:27
which very thing too he unfolds with much clarity, showing what they served then, and what they serve now.
12:28
And he does not yet speak of the harm that comes from the deed, but for the present only of the shame.
12:29
'For what fruit,' he says, 'had you then in the things of which you are now ashamed?' For such was that servitude, that even the very remembrance of it now brings shame.
12:30
But if the remembrance puts to shame, much more does the practice.
12:31
如此你們如今是雙倍得益:既脫離了羞恥,又認清了自己從前所處的境況;
So that now you have gained doubly, both being freed from the shame, and having learned in what state you were;
12:32
正如你們從前是雙倍受害:既行了當羞恥的事,又連當羞恥都不知道——這後者比前者更甚;
just as then you were doubly harmed, both doing things worthy of shame, and not even knowing to be ashamed—which was greater than the former;
12:33
yet nonetheless you continued in servitude.
12:34
Having then shown abundantly the harm of what took place then from the shame, he proceeds to the matter itself.
12:35
What then was the matter? 'For the end of those things is death.'
12:36
因為羞恥似乎並不十分令人難以承受,於是他就進到那極其可怕的事——我是說死;
For since shame does not seem exceedingly grievous, he comes to what is utterly fearful—I mean death;
12:37
and yet what had been said before would have sufficed.
12:38
For consider how excessive was the vice, seeing that even when freed from punishment they could not be freed from the shame.
12:39
'What reward then,' he says, 'do you expect from the deed, when from the mere remembrance—and that too when you have been freed from punishment—you cover your face and blush, and this while being in such great grace? But the things of God are not of this kind.'
12:40
'But now,' he says, 'having been freed from sin, and having become slaves to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end everlasting life.'
12:41
那些事的果子,即使在脫離之後仍是羞恥;而這些事的果子卻是成聖;
Of those things the fruit is shame even after the deliverance, but of these the fruit is sanctification;
12:42
and where there is sanctification, there is much boldness of speech.
12:43
Of those the end is death, but of these everlasting life.
12:44
Do you see how some things he shows to be already given, while others lie in hope? And from the things given he confirms those others as well, confirming life from sanctification.
12:45
唯恐你說「一切都存於盼望之中」,他便顯明你已經收取了果子;
For lest you should say that everything lies in hope, he shows that you have already reaped fruit;
12:46
第一,脫離了那邪惡與那些連回想都令人蒙羞的罪惡;
first, the being freed from the wickedness and from such evils, the very memory of which brings shame;
12:47
第二,成了義的奴僕;
second, the being made a slave to righteousness;
12:48
第三,得享成聖;
third, the enjoying of sanctification;
12:49
fourth, the attaining also of life—and a life not temporary, but everlasting.
12:50
'But nevertheless, even though these things be so,' he says, 'serve at least in equal measure.'
12:51
'For even if the Master is exceedingly superior, and the difference of the servitude is great, and of the rewards for which you serve, yet for the present I demand nothing more.'
12:52
Then, since he had made mention of weapons and of a king, he keeps to the metaphor, saying:
12:53
「因為罪的工價乃是死;
'For the wages of sin is death;
12:54
but the free gift of God is everlasting life in Christ Jesus our Lord.'
12:55
Having said 'the wages of sin,' in the case of good things he did not keep the same order.
12:56
因為他沒有說「你們善行的報酬」,而是說「神的恩賜」,顯明他們並非靠自己脫離,也不是領受了所欠他們的債,也不是勞苦的酬報與回報,乃是這一切都因恩典而成;
For he did not say, 'The reward of your good deeds,' but, 'the free gift of God,' showing that they were not delivered by their own resources, nor received a debt due to them, nor a recompense and repayment for labours, but that all these things came about by grace;
12:57
因此那超越的恩德就在於此:不僅在於祂拯救了他們,也不僅在於祂把他們遷到更美之地,更在於這一切乃是在他們既未勞碌、也未受苦的情形下成就的;
so that herein too lies the surpassing greatness, not only that He delivered them, nor that He transferred them to better things, but that He did so while they neither toiled nor laboured;
12:58
and not only that He delivered them, but that He gave things far greater, and gave them through His Son.
12:59
And all these things he threw in because he had discoursed concerning grace, and was about henceforth to overthrow the Law.
12:60
For lest both these things should make them more slothful, he interposed in the midst the matters concerning strictness of life, everywhere rousing his hearer to the pursuit of virtue.
12:61
And when he calls death 'the wages of sin,' he again strikes fear, and secures them against the things to come.
12:62
For by the very things through which he reminds them of former days, by these same he makes them thankful, and more secure against all that may come upon them.
12:63
Having therefore here brought to a close the discourse on morals, he passes again to matters of doctrine, speaking thus:
12:64
'Or are you ignorant, brethren—for I speak to those who know the Law?'
12:65
For since he had said that we died to sin, he here shows that not only does sin not have dominion over them, but neither does the Law.
12:66
And if the Law does not have dominion, much more does sin not.
12:67
And to make his argument the more agreeable, he makes this plain by a human example.
12:68
他表面上似乎只說一件事,實則為所論之題立下了兩重證明:其一,丈夫既死,妻子就不再受丈夫之律的約束,也無人能攔阻她歸於別人作妻子;
And he seems to say one thing, but he lays down two proofs of the point before him: one, that when the husband has died, the wife is no longer subject to the law of the husband, nor is there anyone to hinder her from becoming another man's wife;
12:69
其二,在此不僅丈夫死了,妻子也死了;
and the other, that here not only has the husband died, but the wife also;
12:70
so that she enjoys a twofold freedom.
12:71
For if, when the husband has died, she is freed from his authority, when she herself is also seen to have died, much more is she set free.
12:72
For if one thing occurring frees her from the authority, much more do both concurring.
12:73
Being then about to enter upon the demonstration concerning these things, he begins with praise of his hearers, saying, 'Or are you ignorant, brethren—for I speak to those who know the Law?'
12:74
That is, 'I speak of what is very generally acknowledged and clear, and they know all these things with exactness.'
12:75
'That the law has dominion over a man for as long a time as he lives.'
12:76
He did not say 'over the husband,' nor 'over the wife,' but 'over the man,' which is the name common to either of the two beings.
12:77
For he that is dead, he says, is justified from sin.
12:78
The law, then, is laid down for the living, but for the dead it issues no more commands.
12:79
Do you see how he has shown the freedom to be twofold? Then, having hinted at this in the preface, he carries the argument forward in his exposition by way of the woman, speaking thus:
12:80
因為有丈夫的婦人,丈夫還活著,就按律法與丈夫綁在一起;
For the woman that is under a husband is bound by law to her living husband;
12:81
but if her husband dies, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
12:82
所以,丈夫還活著的時候,她若歸與別的男人,便要稱為淫婦;
So then, while her husband lives, she shall be called an adulteress if she be joined to another man;
12:83
ἐὰν δὲ ἀπο.
but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress though she be joined to another man.
12:84
他不斷地反覆申說這件事,並且極其精確;
He keeps turning this about continually, and with great exactness;
12:85
because he has full confidence in what is being established by him.
12:86
And he sets, in the place of the husband, the law, and in the place of the woman, all those who have believed.
12:87
接著他所引出的結論,卻不照著前提;
Then he brings in the conclusion not according to the premise;
12:88
for what would have followed was to say:
12:89
Wherefore, my brethren, the law shall not have dominion over you.
12:90
但他並沒有這樣說;反倒在前提中暗示了這一點;
But he did not speak so; rather, in the premise he hinted at this;
12:91
yet in the application, so as to make the argument free of offense, he introduces the woman as having died, saying:
12:92
Wherefore, my brethren, you also were made dead to the law.
12:93
and since that too, once it has come about, affords the same freedom, what hinders him from showing favor to the law, when nothing is thereby harmed in the matter? For the woman that is under a husband is bound by law to her living husband.
12:94
那些毀謗律法的人如今在哪裡呢?讓他們聽聽,他即使陷入不得不然的處境,也不貶損律法的尊嚴,反倒大大地論及它的權柄,因為律法既存活著,猶太人就被綁著,那些違背它、在它存活時離棄它的人,便被稱為姦淫的人;
Where now are those who slander the law? Let them hear how, even when he has fallen upon necessity, he does not tear down its dignity, but discourses greatly concerning its authority, seeing that while it lives the Jew is bound, and those who transgress it and forsake it while it lives are called adulterers;
12:95
但他若是在律法死了之後才放開它,這就不足為奇了;
but if he has let it go once it has died, it is nothing to marvel at;
12:96
for even among men, one who does this is not blamed.
12:97
But if her husband dies, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
12:98
Did you see how in the illustration he shows the law to have died? But he does not do this in the application.
12:99
So then, while her husband lives, the woman shall be called an adulteress.
12:100
See how he dwells upon the accusations against those who transgress the law while it lives.
12:101
But when he has laid it to rest, then with all security he shows favor to it in the interest of faith, thereby doing no harm.
12:102
For while her husband lives, he says, the woman shall be called an adulteress, if she be joined to another man.
12:103
Wherefore, my brethren, you also—
12:104
Now that the law has died, you are not judged for adultery, though you are joined to another man.
12:105
But he did not speak so; rather, how? You were made dead to the law.
12:106
If you have become dead, you are not under the law.
12:107
For if, when the husband has died, the woman is not liable, much more is she, having herself died, released from him.
12:108
Did you see Paul's wisdom, how he showed that the law itself wills this—namely, to depart from it and to be joined to another man? For it does not forbid, he says, being joined to another husband when the former has died.
12:109
既然律法連在丈夫存活時,也准她拿休書,它又怎會禁止呢?但這一點他也不提出來,因為那反倒是對婦人的一項指控;
For how could it, seeing that even while the husband lives it permits her to take a bill of divorcement? But this too he does not set forth, since it was rather a charge against the women;
12:110
for even though it was permitted, still it was not free from blame.
12:111
因為人若從必要而確鑿的憑據得了勝利,就不再尋求那多餘的了;
For when one has his victory from what is necessary and approved, he does not seek out what is superfluous;
12:112
那麼,可驚奇的正在於此:當我們離開律法時,律法本身竟使我們脫離那些控訴;
This, then, is the marvel: that the law itself releases us from the charges when we have departed from it;
12:113
so that it is its own will that we should become Christ's.
12:114
For indeed it too has died, and we too have died, and in a twofold way the claims of its authority have been abolished.
12:115
但他並不以這些為滿足,還加上了緣由;
But he is not content with these things alone; he adds also the cause;
12:116
for he did not simply set down the death, but again brought in the cross that wrought these things, and by this too making us debtors.
12:117
For he does not simply say, You were released, but, Through the death of the Master.
12:118
For you were made dead, he says, to the law through the body of Christ.
12:119
他不僅從這一點勸勉他們,也從那第二位丈夫超越的尊貴上勸勉;
And he exhorts them not only from this, but also from the surpassing excellence of the second husband;
12:120
That you should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead.
12:121
接著,恐怕他們說:「那麼,我們若不願歸與第二位丈夫,又當如何?」——因為律法固然不使守寡的婦人在再嫁時成為淫婦,卻也不勉強她出嫁;
Then, lest they should say, What then, if we are unwilling to be joined to a second husband? for the law does indeed not make the widow an adulteress if she enters into a second marriage, yet it does not compel her to marry;
12:122
所以,為使他們不這樣說,他顯明:單從那已經為我們所成就的事,我們也理當甘心願意;
in order, then, that they should not say this, he shows that even from what has already been done for us, we ought to be willing;
12:123
which he also sets forth more plainly elsewhere, saying:
12:124
又說:「你們不要作人的奴僕」;
and, Be not slaves of men;
12:125
and again, One died for all, that they who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who died for them.
12:126
This, at any rate, he hinted at here also when he said:
12:127
Then he further exhorts them with the better hopes, saying:
12:128
That we should bring forth fruit unto God.
12:129
For then, he says, you bore fruit unto death, but now unto God.
12:130
For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
12:131
你看見那前夫的「益處」了嗎?他並沒有說「當我們在律法之下的時候」,處處謹慎,免得給異端者留下把柄;
Did you see the gain of the former husband? And he did not say, When we were in the law, everywhere sparing to give the heretics a handle;
12:132
but, When we were in the flesh—that is, in wicked deeds, in the fleshly life.
12:133
For he does not mean this, that before this they were in the flesh, but now, having become bodiless, they went about.
12:134
但他說這話時,既不說律法是諸罪的緣由,也不使它脫離眾人的憎惡;
But in saying this, he neither says that the law is the cause of sins, nor does he free it from odium;
12:135
因為律法佔的是一位嚴厲控告者的地位,將諸罪暴露出來;
for it held the rank of a bitter accuser, laying bare the sins;
12:136
by enjoining more upon him who is willing to obey in nothing, it makes the transgression to abound.
12:137
For this reason he did not say, The passions of sins that come to be under the law, but, that are through the law; and he did not add, coming to be, but simply, through the law—that is, those made manifest or made known through the law.
12:138
接著,為叫他也不至於控告肉體,他沒有說「那肢體所發動的」,而是說「那在我們肢體中被發動的」;
Then, so that he might not accuse the flesh either, he did not say, which the members wrought, but which were wrought in our members;
12:139
showing that the origin of the wickedness is from elsewhere—from the reasonings that set it in motion, not from the members that are set in motion.
12:140
For the soul held the rank of the craftsman, while the nature of the flesh was as a lyre, sounding just as the craftsman compelled.
12:141
Therefore we must reckon the discordant strain not to the latter, but to the former before the latter.
12:142
But now, he says, we have been discharged from the law.
12:143
Do you see how here again he spares the flesh and the law? For he did not say that the law was abolished, nor that the flesh was abolished, but that we were abolished.
12:144
我們是怎樣被廢除的呢?就是那被罪挾制的舊人已經死了,並且被埋葬了;
And how were we abolished? By the old man that was held fast by sin having died and been buried;
12:145
for this is what he showed by saying:
12:146
Having died in that in which we were held fast.
12:147
It is as though he said: The bond by which we were held fast has been put to death and dissolved, so that he who held us captive—that is, sin—holds us no longer.
12:148
但你不可鬆懈頹喪,也不可變得更加怠惰;
But do not sink down, nor grow the more negligent;
12:149
for you were set free from bondage, not that you should serve again, and not in the same manner, but that we should serve in newness of the Spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
12:150
But what is it that he says? For it is necessary now to disclose this, so that when we come upon the passage we may not be thrown into confusion.
12:151
他說:當亞當犯罪的時候,他的身體就變為必死的、能受苦的,並染上了許多自然的缺陷,那馬也變得更沉重、更難駕馭了;
For when Adam sinned, he says, his body also became mortal and subject to suffering, and received many natural defects, and the horse grew heavier and harder to rein in;
12:152
but Christ, when He came, made it lighter for us through baptism, raising it up with the wing of the Spirit.
12:153
For this very reason the lists of combat are not the same for the men of old and for us, since even then the course was not so easy.
12:154
所以祂也要求我們不僅像古人那樣潔淨脫離兇殺,更要脫離怒氣;
Wherefore He too requires that we be pure not from murders only, as the ancients were, but even from anger;
12:155
不僅要脫離姦淫,更吩咐我們連放縱情慾的眼目也要除去;
nor from adultery only, but He commands us to be delivered even from an unchaste glance;
12:156
不僅要脫離假誓,更要連起誓本身也全然免去;並吩咐我們不但愛朋友,也要愛仇敵;
nor from perjury only, but to be free even from oaths altogether; and He enjoins us to love our enemies together with our friends;
12:157
and in all other things too He made the courses longer, and, should we not obey, He has threatened hell besides, showing that the things required are not, like virginity and voluntary poverty, matters of the ambition of those who strive, but are by all means to be accomplished.
12:158
For indeed they belong among the necessary and pressing things, and he who does them not pays the uttermost penalty.
12:159
Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.
12:160
And he who sees not the kingdom shall by all means fall into hell.
12:161
For this reason Paul also said:
12:162
罪必不能作你們的主;
For sin shall not have dominion over you;
12:163
for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
12:164
That we should serve in newness of the Spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
12:165
For there is no letter that condemns—that is, the old law—but a Spirit that helps.
12:166
為此,在古人中間,若有人在哪裏顯出操練童貞,這便是極令人驚異的事;
For this reason, among the men of old, if anywhere someone appeared practising virginity, it was a matter of great astonishment;
12:167
但如今在普天下各處,這事都已廣傳播撒開來;
but now everywhere throughout the inhabited world the practice has been sown abroad;
12:168
and death then but few men scarcely despised, yet now in villages and cities alike there stand countless throngs of martyrs, made up not of men only, but of women also.
12:169
Then, since he had said these things, he resolves an objection that again arises, and in resolving it he establishes what he intends.
12:170
For this reason he does not even introduce the solution as of primary purpose, but as arising from a counter-statement, so that by the necessity of the resolution he may seize an occasion to say what he wishes, and may render the accusation less burdensome.
12:171
For since he had said, In newness of the Spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter, he added:
12:172
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid.
12:173
因為在這之前他曾說過,那藉著律法而生的諸般罪惡的私慾,在我們肢體中發動;
For indeed before this he had said that The passions of sins, which were through the law, wrought in our members;
12:174
又說,罪必不能作你們的主;
and, Sin shall not have dominion over you;
12:175
因你們不在律法之下,乃在恩典之下;
for ye are not under the law, but under grace;
12:176
又說,哪裏沒有律法,那裏就沒有過犯;
and that, Where there is no law, there is no transgression;
12:177
又說,律法本是外添的,叫過犯顯多;
and, The law entered besides, that the offence might abound;
12:178
and, The law works wrath.
12:179
Since therefore all these things seemed to bring a charge against the law, as one correcting the suspicion arising from them, he sets down also the objection, and says:
12:180
What then? Is the law sin? God forbid.
12:181
Before the demonstration he forbade it, winning over the hearer, and healing the one who was being offended.
12:182
因為此後聽者既聽見了這話,又對他的心意得了確據,便與他一同探究那似乎難解的問題,並不猜疑那說話的人;
For thereafter, having heard it and being assured concerning his disposition, the hearer joins with him in inquiring into what seems to be perplexing, and does not hold the speaker in suspicion;
12:183
wherefore he has set down that objection by anticipation.
12:184
For he did not say, What then might I say? but, What shall we say? as of a deliberation and judgment set forth, and of a common assembly of the Church convened, and as though the objection appeared not from himself, but from the sequence of what had been said and from the truth of the matters.
12:185
他說:那字句叫人死,這是無人能反駁的;
For that the letter kills, no one will gainsay, he says;
12:186
and that the Spirit gives life, this too is manifest, and no one would contend against it.
12:187
If then these things are agreed, what should we say concerning the law? that it is sin? God forbid.
12:188
Do you see how he sets the adversary alongside himself, and, assuming the dignity of a teacher, proceeds to the solution? What then is the solution? Sin indeed it is not, he says.
12:189
But I had not known sin, except through the law.
12:190
What the law is not, he set down by way of counter-statement, so that by doing away with this, and thereby granting a concession to the Jew, he might persuade him to accept the lesser point.
12:191
But what is the lesser point? That I had not known sin, except through the law.
12:192
For I had not known lust, he says, except the law had said.
12:193
Do you see how by little and little he shows the law to be not only an accuser of sin, but even quietly its establisher? Yet he declares that this comes about not through its own fault, but through the fault of the senseless Jews.
12:194
For indeed he was eager also to stop the mouths of the Manichaeans, who accuse the law.
12:195
For having said that I had not known sin, except through the law, and I had not known lust, except the law had said,
12:196
Thou shalt not covet, he added:
12:197
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of lust.
12:198
你看他怎樣使律法脫離了一切指控嗎?他說:是罪趁著機會—不是律法—增添了貪心,以致與律法所願的相反的事發生了;
Do you see how he freed it from all charges? For sin, taking occasion, he says—not the law—increased the lust, and the contrary of what the law wished came to pass;
12:199
which was a mark of weakness, not of wickedness.
12:200
For when we desire something and are then hindered, the flame of the desire is kindled the more.
12:201
但這並不是律法的緣故;
But this is not owing to the law;
12:202
因為律法固然禁止,為要把人引離;
for it indeed forbade, so as to lead away;
12:203
but sin—that is, your own slothfulness and your wicked purpose—used the good thing for the contrary end.
12:204
But this is no charge against the physician, but against the sick man who used the medicine badly.
12:205
因為神賜下律法,並非為要點燃貪慾,乃是為要熄滅它;
For not for this cause did He give the law, that it might kindle the lust, but that it might quench it;
12:206
yet the accusation belongs not to it, but to us.
12:207
因為,若有人不容那發燒又不合時宜地渴想冷飲的病人縱情飽飲,以致反倒增添了他對那致命之樂的渴望,這人也不當受公正的責備;
For neither, if one who does not permit a man in a fever, and craving cold drink unseasonably, to gorge himself thereon, should thereby increase the desire for that deadly pleasure, would he justly be blamed;
12:208
for it was the physician's part only to forbid, but the abstaining belonged to the sufferer.
12:209
因為,即或罪從律法取了機會,這又如何呢?連許多惡人也從美善的命令中增添了自己的邪惡;
For what of it, if sin took its occasion from the law? For many even of the wicked increase their own wickedness out of good injunctions;
12:210
正如魔鬼也照樣毀滅了猶大,把他投入貪財之中,使他偷竊窮人的財物;
since the devil too in this way destroyed Judas, casting him into the love of money, and making him steal the goods of the poor;
12:211
yet it was not the being entrusted with the money-box that wrought this in him, but the wickedness of his purpose.
12:212
夏娃也照樣,她預備了亞當去吃那樹上的果子,就把他趕出了樂園;
And Eve too, having prepared Adam to eat of the tree, cast him out of paradise;
12:213
yet neither there was the tree the cause, even though through it the occasion came about.
12:214
但他論到律法時,若用了頗為激烈的言辭,你不要驚奇;
But if he uses somewhat vehement language concerning the law, do not marvel;
12:215
for Paul takes his stand toward the pressing need, not indeed leaving even to those who otherwise suspect his words a handle to lay hold of, yet making great haste to set right the matter at hand.
12:216
Therefore do not examine the things said here in a bare fashion, but add also the theme on account of which he is led to say them, and take into account the Jewish madness and their vehemence.
12:217
the contentious dispute which he was hastening to dissolve.
12:218
He seems to breathe out much against the Law, not that he might slander it, but that he might relax the vehemence of these men.
12:219
For if it be a charge against the Law that through it sin took its occasion, this will be found to happen in the New Covenant as well.
12:220
因為在新約裡同樣有無數的誡命,而且是關乎更重大的事;
For indeed in the New Covenant also there are countless laws, and these concerning matters far greater;
12:221
and one might see the same thing coming to pass there too, and that not in the case of desire only, but in the case of every kind of wickedness whatsoever.
12:222
For 'If I had not come and spoken to them,' He says, 'they would not have had sin.'
12:223
Therefore from this source sin took its occasion, and the greater punishment as well.
12:224
And again, Paul, discoursing concerning grace, says:
12:225
'Of how much worse punishment, do you think, shall he be counted worthy who has trodden underfoot the Son of God?' Therefore even the worse punishment has its occasion from this source, namely from the greater benefit.
12:226
And the Greeks too, he says, are on this account without excuse, in that, though honoured with reason and having learned the beauty of the creation, and being able through it to be led by the hand toward the Creator, they did not use the wisdom of God unto its proper end.
12:227
See how everywhere occasions for the greater chastisement of the wicked arise out of good things.
12:228
But surely we shall not on this account accuse the benefits of God; rather, these we shall admire the more even after these things, while we shall censure the disposition of those who have used good things toward the contrary ends.
12:229
This same thing, then, let us do also in the case of the Law.
12:230
But this indeed is easy and simple.
12:231
How is it that he says, 'I had not known lust, except the Law had said'?
12:232
For if a man had not known lust before he received the Law, whence came the Flood? Whence were the Sodomites burned up? What then does he mean? The intensified lust.
12:233
For this reason he did not say, 'It wrought in me lust,' but 'all lust,' hinting here at its vehemence.
12:234
有人會說:「若律法反倒使情慾加增,那律法有何益處呢?」並無益處,反倒有大害;
'And what,' one may say, 'is the gain of the Law, if it increased the passion?' None, but rather much harm;
12:235
yet this is no charge against the Law, but against the slothfulness of those who received it.
12:236
因為是罪成就了這事,雖然是藉著律法;
For sin wrought this, though through the Law;
12:237
yet this was not what the Law was earnestly seeking, but rather the very opposite.
12:238
所以罪變得更為強大,而且極其強大;
Sin therefore became stronger, and exceedingly so;
12:239
but neither is this again a charge against the Law, but against their perverseness.
12:240
'For without the Law sin is dead;'
12:241
that is, not so plainly recognised.
12:242
For those before the Law also knew that they were sinning, yet they learned it more exactly after the giving of the Law.
12:243
For this reason too they were liable to a greater accusation.
12:244
For it was not the same thing to have nature as an accuser, and to have, along with nature, the Law also openly proclaiming all things.
12:245
'And I was alive without the Law once.'
12:246
When, tell me? Before Moses.
12:247
See how he is earnest to show that the Law weighed down human nature both by what it did and by what it did not do.
12:248
'For when I was alive without the Law,' he says, 'I was not so condemned.'
12:249
'But when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.'
12:250
這看似是對律法的一種控告;
This indeed seems to be an accusation of the Law;
12:251
but if one should examine it accurately, it will appear to be even an encomium of it.
12:252
因為律法並非造出一個本不存在的罪,而是顯明了那本已隱藏的罪;
For it did not bring into being a sin that was not there, but showed one that was hidden;
12:253
這正是律法的稱讚,因為在律法以前他們犯罪而不自覺,但律法一來,即使他們別無所得,至少也確切地學到了這一件事,就是他們原是在犯罪;
which very thing is a praise of the Law, seeing that before it they sinned without perception, but after it had come, even if they reaped nothing else, this at least they learned accurately, namely that they were sinning;
12:254
which would be no small thing toward deliverance from wickedness.
12:255
But if they were not delivered from wickedness, this is nothing against the Law which did all for this end, but the whole accusation belongs to the disposition of those men, which was corrupted beyond all hope.
12:256
For it was not according to reason, this thing that came to pass, namely to be harmed by the things that were profiting.
12:257
'And the commandment which was unto life, this I found to be unto death.'
12:258
He did not say, 'It became death,' nor 'It brought forth death,' but 'I found,' thus interpreting the strange and paradoxical character of the absurdity, and turning the whole matter upon their own head.
12:259
因為你若願意看它的宗旨,它原是引向生命的,他說,也正是為此才賜下的;
For if you are willing to see its aim, it led unto life, he says, and for this end it was given;
12:260
but if death resulted from it, the charge belongs to those who received the commandment, not to that which was leading unto life.
12:261
And this very thing he makes clearer also through what follows.
12:262
'For sin, taking occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it slew me.'
12:263
Do you see how everywhere he lays hold of sin, freeing the Law from every accusation? Wherefore he added, saying:
12:264
'So that the Law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.'
12:265
但你們若願意,我們也把那些曲解這些解釋之人的說法擺在中間;
But, if you please, let us bring also into the midst the discourse of those who pervert these interpretations;
12:266
for thus what is said by us will be clearer.
12:267
For some say that here he is not speaking these things concerning the Law of Moses, but some say concerning the natural law, and others concerning the commandment given in Paradise.
12:268
然而保羅處處的目的都是要使這律法得安息,至於那些別的律法,他毫無論辯之意;
And yet everywhere Paul's aim is to give this Law its rest, whereas toward those others he has no argument at all;
12:269
for it was this that the Jews, dreading and shuddering at, made them contentious against grace.
12:270
But the commandment in Paradise he nowhere appears to have called a law, neither he himself nor anyone else.
12:271
But that this may become clearer even from the very words that have been spoken, let us go through the expressions, carrying the argument back a little higher.
12:272
For having discoursed to them accurately concerning the manner of life, he added, saying:
12:273
'Or do you not know, brethren, that the Law has dominion over a man for as long a time as he lives? So that you were made dead to the Law.'
12:274
所以,這些話若是指本性的律法而說,我們就要被發現是沒有本性律法的了;
Therefore if these things were said concerning the natural law, we shall be found not having a natural law;
12:275
and if this be true, we are more senseless than the irrational beasts.
12:276
But this is not so, it is not so.
12:277
For concerning that which is in Paradise it is not even necessary to contend, lest we take upon ourselves a superfluous war, stripping ourselves for battle against things already agreed upon.
