What then shall we say that Abraham our father found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has ground for boasting, but not before God.
8:2
Having said that the world had become subject to judgment before God, and that all had sinned, and that there is no way to be saved otherwise than through faith, he now presses on to show that this salvation is not a matter of shame, but is also the cause of resplendent glory, and of a greater glory than that which comes through works.
8:3
For since to be saved with shame carried with it a certain despondency, he now removes this suspicion as well.
8:4
And indeed he had already hinted at this, when he called it not merely salvation but also righteousness.
8:5
For 'the righteousness of God,' he says, 'is revealed in it.'
8:6
For he who is thus saved is saved as a righteous man, with boldness.
8:7
And not righteousness only, but also a demonstration of God.
8:8
But God demonstrates himself in things glorious, resplendent, and great.
8:9
Nevertheless he establishes this also from what has already been set forth, advancing his argument by way of question, which he is always accustomed to do both for the sake of clarity and to give confidence in what is said.
8:10
For indeed he did so above as well, saying, 'What advantage then has the Jew?'
8:11
and, 'What then? Are we better than they?'; and again, 'Where then is the boasting? It is excluded.'
8:12
and here, 'What then shall we say of Abraham our father?' For since the Jews were constantly turning this over, that the patriarch and friend of God was the first to receive circumcision, he wishes to show that even he was justified by faith.
8:13
which was the abundance of a great victory.
8:14
For that one who has no works should be justified by faith is nothing surprising.
8:15
but that one abounding in good deeds should become righteous not from these, but from faith, this was the wonder, and that which especially displays the strength of faith.
8:16
Therefore, passing by all the others, he brings his argument up to this man.
8:17
And he called him father according to the flesh, casting them out from genuine kinship with him, and preparing the way for the nations' close relationship with him.
8:18
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has ground for boasting, but not before God.
8:19
namely, that God justifies the circumcision by faith and the uncircumcision through faith; and having established this sufficiently in what went before, he shows it through Abraham even more fully than he had promised, and sets faith in contest against works, and stakes the whole struggle upon the righteous man.
8:20
Wherefore also he greatly honours him by calling him forefather, and lays upon them the necessity of obeying him in all things.
8:21
For do not, he says, name to me the Jew, nor bring forward into the midst this man or that.
8:22
for I go up to the summit of all, and to the very source from which circumcision took its beginning.
8:23
For if Abraham, he says, was justified by works, he has ground for boasting, but not before God.
8:24
It is therefore necessary to make this clearer.
8:25
For there are two kinds of boasting: the one from works, the other from faith.
8:26
Having said, then, 'If he was justified by works, he has ground for boasting, but not before God,' he showed that from faith too one may have ground for boasting, and that far greater.
8:27
For the great power of Paul is shown especially in this, that he turned the matter round to the opposite, and that very thing which salvation by works possessed—namely, boasting and speaking with boldness—he showed to belong far more to faith.
8:28
For he who boasts in works has his own labours to put forward.
8:29
but he who glories in having believed God displays a far greater occasion for boasting, inasmuch as he has glorified and magnified the Lord.
8:30
For those things which the nature of visible things did not suggest, these he accepted from his faith in Him, and thereby both displayed his genuine love toward Him and gloriously proclaimed His power.
8:31
And this belongs to a most noble soul, a philosophic disposition, and a lofty mind.
8:32
For not to steal and not to murder belongs even to ordinary men.
8:33
but to believe that God can do things impossible requires a great and generous soul, and one deeply devoted to Him.
8:34
for this too is a sign of genuine love.
8:35
For he who fulfils the commandments does indeed honour God, but much more does this man who lives philosophically through faith.
8:36
for the former obeyed Him, while the latter received a fitting opinion concerning Him, and glorified and marvelled at Him far more than by the display of works.
8:37
That boasting, then, belongs to the one who has done rightly; but this glorifies God, and is wholly His.
8:38
for he boasts in conceiving great things concerning Him, which pass over into His glory.
8:39
For this reason he says that his boasting is toward God.
8:40
and not for this reason only, but also for another.
8:41
For the believer boasts again, not only that he loved God genuinely, but also that he enjoyed much honour and love from Him.
8:42
For just as he himself loved Him, having conceived great things concerning Him.
8:43
so also God loved him, though he was liable to ten thousand charges, not only delivering him from punishment, but also making him righteous. He has, therefore, ground for boasting, as one counted worthy of a great love.
8:44
For what does the Scripture say? 'Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness.'
8:45
'Now to him who works, the reward is not reckoned according to grace, but according to debt.'
8:46
'Is not this, then, the greater thing?' one may say. By no means.
8:47
καὶ γὰρ τῷ πι.
For to the believer also it is reckoned.
8:48
and it would not have been reckoned, unless he too had contributed something.
8:49
So that this man too has God as his debtor, and not a debtor for trifling things, but for great and lofty matters.
8:50
For to show his greatness of mind and his spiritual understanding, he did not simply say 'to the believer,' but 'to him who believes on Him that justifies the ungodly.'
8:51
'His faith is reckoned for righteousness.'
8:52
For consider how great a thing it is to be persuaded and fully assured that God is able suddenly not only to free from punishment this man who has lived in ungodliness, but also to make him righteous, and to count him worthy of those immortal honours.
8:53
Do not, therefore, suppose that this man is diminished because it is not reckoned to him according to grace.
8:54
For this very thing especially makes the believer illustrious: that he enjoyed so great a grace, that he displayed such faith.
8:55
And observe that the recompense too is greater.
8:56
For to the one a reward is given, but to this one righteousness.
8:57
for righteousness is the recompense most comprehensive of many rewards.
8:58
Having shown this, then, from Abraham, he next brings in David also, casting his vote in agreement with what has been said.
8:59
What then does David say, and whom does he call blessed? The one abounding in works, or the one who has enjoyed grace, who has obtained forgiveness and a free gift? And when I speak of blessedness, I mean the summit of all good things.
8:60
For as righteousness is more than a reward, so blessedness is more than righteousness.
8:61
Having shown righteousness to be better, then, not only because Abraham received it, but also from reasonings ('For he has ground for boasting,' he says, 'but not before God').
8:62
he in yet another way declares it more venerable, bringing in David to cast his vote for it.
8:63
for he too, he says, calls blessed the one thus justified, saying:
8:64
'Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven.'
8:65
And it seems that he is bringing forward a testimony that does not fit.
8:66
'Blessed are they whose faith is reckoned for righteousness.'
8:67
But he does this deliberately, not in ignorance, in order that he may show the surpassing greatness the more.
8:68
For if he is blessed who has received forgiveness by grace, much more is he who has been justified, and who has displayed faith.
8:69
But where there is blessedness, all shame has been done away, and great is the glory; for blessedness is an intensification both of rewards and of glory.
8:70
for blessedness is an intensification both of rewards and of glory.
8:71
For this reason, that which is the advantage of the one he sets down without a written testimony, saying:
8:72
「做工的得工價,不算恩典」;
'For to him that works, the reward is not reckoned according to grace';
8:73
but that which is the pre-eminence of the believer, this he establishes by a written testimony, saying:
8:74
'Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.'
8:75
他說,你要說甚麼呢?說你所領受的赦免不是按著所欠的債,而是按著恩典嗎?但你看,這正是那被稱為有福的人;
For what do you say, he asks? That not according to debt but according to grace you receive forgiveness? But behold, this is the very one who is called blessed;
8:76
and he would not have called him blessed, unless he had also seen him enjoying great glory.
8:77
This forgiveness, then, is it upon the circumcision?
8:78
But what? Is this blessedness then (which was the greater thing) upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision? For it is now inquired with which of the two this good and great thing stands—whether with the circumcision, or with the uncircumcision.
8:79
for he shows that it not only does not flee the uncircumcision, but even dwells fondly with it before the circumcision.
8:80
For since he who pronounced the blessing, David himself, was also within the circumcision, and was conversing with those in the circumcision, observe how earnestly Paul contended to bring what was said over to the uncircumcised.
8:81
For having joined the blessedness to the righteousness, and having shown the two to be one, he inquires how Abraham was justified.
8:82
For if the blessedness belongs to the righteous man, and Abraham was justified, let us see how he was justified—being uncircumcised or being within the circumcision.
8:83
How then was it reckoned? While he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. For we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
8:84
Having said above 'For what does the Scripture say?' he asks,
8:85
'Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness'—here he further takes up the judgement even of those who make the objection, and shows that the righteousness came to be in the uncircumcision.
8:86
接著他從這些話中解答另一個隨之而起的反駁;
Then from these things he resolves another objection that arises;
8:87
for if, being uncircumcised, he says, he was justified, for what purpose did circumcision come in afterwards? He received, he says, a sign and a seal of the righteousness which came to him through the faith he had while he was uncircumcised.
8:88
你看見他如何指明猶太人彷彿處於食客的地位嗎?或者說,這些受割禮的人也不過是附屬於那些未受割禮之人的嗎?因為他既在未受割禮時被稱義並得了冠冕,後來才受割禮,而猶太人是後來才進入的,那麼亞伯拉罕首先是那些藉信歸屬於他之未受割禮之人的父,然後才是受割禮之人的父;
Do you see how he showed the Jews to be, as it were, in the rank of hangers-on? Or rather, that these too, who are in circumcision, are but appended to those in uncircumcision? For if he was justified while uncircumcised and was crowned, but afterwards received circumcision, and afterwards the Jews came in, then Abraham is first the father of the uncircumcised who belong to him through faith, and only then of those in circumcision;
8:89
for he is a twofold forefather.
8:90
Do you see faith shining forth? For until it came, the patriarch was not justified.
8:91
Do you see the uncircumcision in no way hindering? For indeed he was uncircumcised, and was not prevented from being justified.
8:92
Circumcision therefore is later than faith.
8:93
And why do you marvel that circumcision is later than faith, when it is even later than the uncircumcision? And it is not only later than faith, but far inferior to it also,
8:94
其不及的程度,正如記號不及那被它所標記之事一般;
and inferior in as great a degree as the sign is inferior to the very thing whereof it is a sign;
8:95
just as, for example, the seal of the soldier.
8:96
And for what purpose, one asks, did he need a seal? It was not he himself who needed it.
8:97
那麼他為何領受它呢?乃是要使他作那些藉未受割禮而信之人、以及那些在割禮中之人共同的父;
For what purpose then did he receive it? That he might become a common father both of those who believe through uncircumcision and of those in circumcision;
8:98
但這並非單指那些在割禮中的人;
but not simply of those in circumcision;
8:99
'to those who are not of the circumcision only.'
8:100
For if he is a father of the uncircumcised—not because he is uncircumcised is he for that reason their father, though indeed he was justified in uncircumcision, but because they emulated his faith—much more will he not be the forefather of the circumcised on account of the circumcision, unless faith also be added.
8:101
For he received circumcision, he says, that both parties might have him as their forefather, and that the uncircumcised might not thrust away those in circumcision.
8:102
你看見這些人如何首先以他為先祖嗎?但割禮若因宣揚義而尊貴,那麼未受割禮也有不小的優先地位,因為它在割禮之先便領受了那義;
Do you see how these first had him as forefather? But if circumcision is honourable because it proclaims righteousness, no small precedence has the uncircumcision also, in that it received that righteousness before the circumcision;
8:103
you will then be able to have him as forefather, when you walk in the footsteps of faith, and neither contend nor stir up strife by bringing in the Law.
8:104
Of what faith, tell me? Of that in the uncircumcision.
8:105
Again he abases the Jewish pride, reminding them of the time of the righteousness.
8:106
And he said well, 'In the footsteps,' that you might believe, like him, in the resurrection of dead bodies.
8:107
因為他也正是在這事上顯出了他的信心;
For indeed that one also displayed his faith concerning this;
8:108
so that if you cast out the uncircumcision, learn clearly that there is no profit to you, not even from circumcision.
8:109
因為你若不跟隨信心的腳蹤,縱使受了千萬次割禮,也不能作亞伯拉罕的後裔;
For unless you follow the footsteps of faith, though you be circumcised ten thousand times over, you will not be a descendant of Abraham;
8:110
since for this very reason he received circumcision also, that you who are in uncircumcision might not be cast out.
8:111
所以你不要向他也索求這事;
Do not, then, demand this of him also;
8:112
for the matter became a help to you, not to him.
8:113
But it is a sign of righteousness, he says.
8:114
這也是為你的緣故,因為如今連這記號也算不得甚麼了;
And this too was for your sake, since now it is not even that;
8:115
for then you had need of bodily signs, but now there is no need of these.
8:116
For from his faith, he says, was it not possible to discern the virtue of his soul? It was indeed possible, but you had need of this addition also.
8:117
For since you did not emulate the virtue of the soul, nor were able to see it, the perceptible circumcision was given to you, that having practised on this bodily thing, you might little by little be led by the hand even to the philosophy of the soul, and having received it with much diligence as a very great dignity, you might be trained to imitate and to reverence your forefather.
8:118
And this God contrived not in circumcision only, but in all the other things also—I mean, for instance, in sacrifices and sabbaths and feasts.
8:119
至於他是為你的緣故受割禮,你且聽下文所說的;
For that he received circumcision for your sake, hear what follows;
8:120
for having said that he received a sign and a seal, he sets down the reason also, saying:
8:121
「叫他作受割禮之人的父」——是指那些也承受屬靈割禮的人;
'That he might become the father of circumcision'—to those who also take on the spiritual circumcision;
8:122
so that if you have this alone, nothing more will accrue to you.
8:123
因為惟有當那被它所標記之事,就是信心,顯明在你身上時,它才算是記號;
For it is then a sign, when the thing whereof it is a sign appears in you—that is, faith;
8:124
since, if you do not have this, the sign can no longer be a sign at all.
8:125
因為若沒有被封印之物,它又能作甚麼的記號、甚麼的印證呢?這就好比你把一個封了印的錢囊指給我們看,裡面卻空無一物;
For of what will it be a sign, and of what a seal, if there is nothing being sealed? just as if you were to show us a purse bearing a seal, with nothing laid up inside;
8:126
so that circumcision is ridiculous, when faith is not within.
8:127
For if it is a sign of righteousness, but you have not righteousness, neither have you the sign.
8:128
你領受這記號的緣故,正是要叫你去尋求那你持有其記號之事;
For this cause you received the sign, that you might seek after the thing whereof you have the sign;
8:129
since, if you were going to seek after it apart from this, you would have had no need of this.
8:130
But circumcision does not proclaim this alone—namely righteousness—but also the righteousness that is in uncircumcision.
8:131
Circumcision, therefore, proclaims nothing else than that there is no need of circumcision.
8:132
'For if they who are of the Law are heirs,
8:133
faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.'
8:134
He showed that faith is necessary, that it is older than circumcision, that it is mightier than the Law, that it establishes the Law.
8:135
因為若人人都犯了罪,信心便是必需的;
For if all have sinned, it is necessary;
8:136
他若在未受割禮時被稱義,信心便是更古的;
if, being uncircumcised, he was justified, it is older;
8:137
if through the Law comes the knowledge of sin, but it has been manifested apart from the Law, it is mightier.
8:138
If faith is attested by the Law and itself establishes the Law, then it is not opposed to the Law, but is its friend and ally.
8:139
He shows again, and from another quarter, that it was not even possible to receive the inheritance by means of the Law.
8:140
And having set it side by side with circumcision, and having carried off the prize of victory, he once more marshals it against the Law, speaking thus:
8:141
For if they which are of the Law be heirs, faith is made void.
8:142
For lest anyone should say that it is possible both to have faith and to keep the Law, he shows that this is impossible.
8:143
For he who clings to the Law as though it saves, dishonours the power of faith.
8:144
這就是說:他以為不需要那憑恩典而來的救恩;
That is to say, there is no need of the salvation that comes by grace;
8:145
如此,信便連自己的力量也無從施展了;
for it cannot even display its own strength;
8:146
and the promise is rendered void.
8:147
Καὶ.
For indeed the Jew might perhaps say:
8:148
What need have I of faith? If then this be true, together with faith the things of the promise also are done away.
8:149
See how in all these things he contends from the very beginning, starting from the patriarch.
8:150
For having shown from that source that righteousness is jointly allotted to faith, he shows that the promise likewise is.
8:151
For lest the Jew should say:
8:152
「亞伯拉罕若是因信稱義,與我何干?」保羅便說:這確與你有關,因為那承受產業的應許,離了那信便無法成就;
'What does it matter to me if Abraham was justified through faith?' Paul says that it does concern you, since the promise of the inheritance cannot come into effect apart from that faith;
8:153
And what promise, he asks? That he should be heir of the world, and that in him all should be blessed.
8:154
And how, he asks, is this promise rendered void?
8:155
因為律法是惹動忿怒的;
Because the Law works wrath;
8:156
for where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
8:157
但律法若是惹動忿怒、使人陷於過犯之下,顯然也使人落在咒詛之下;
But if it works wrath and makes men liable to transgression, it is plain that it makes them liable to the curse as well;
8:158
and those who are under the curse and punishment and transgression are not worthy to inherit, but rather to pay the penalty and be cast out.
8:159
那麼結果如何呢?信便來到,帶著恩典同來,使那應許得以成就。因為哪裡有恩典,哪裡就有赦免;
What then comes to pass? Faith comes, drawing grace along with it, so that the promise may go forth into effect. For where there is grace, there is remission;
8:160
哪裡有赦免,哪裡就沒有刑罰;
and where there is remission, there is no punishment;
8:161
and punishment being done away, and righteousness supervening from faith, there is nothing to hinder us from becoming heirs of the promise that is from faith.
8:162
For this reason, he says, it is of faith, that it might be according to grace; to the end that the promise of God might be sure to all the seed, not to that which is of the Law only, but also to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.
8:163
你看見了嗎?信不但成全律法,也不容神的應許落空;
Do you see that faith not only establishes the Law, but also does not allow the promise of God to fall to the ground;
8:164
whereas the Law, on the contrary, both nullifies faith when it is kept out of due season, and hinders the promise? Through these things he shows that faith is not only not superfluous, but so necessary that without it one cannot even be saved.
8:165
因為律法惹動忿怒;
For the Law indeed works wrath;
8:166
因為眾人都干犯了它;
for all transgressed it;
8:167
然而信卻連那忿怒也不容它從起初生起;
but faith does not even allow the wrath to arise in the first place;
8:168
For where there is no law, he says, neither is there transgression.
8:169
Do you see how it not only abolishes sin once it has come into being, but does not even allow it to sprout up? For this reason he says:
8:170
To what end? Not that they might be put to shame, but that the promise might be sure to all the seed.
8:171
Here he sets down two good things: that what is given is both sure, and to all the seed—thereby bringing in with them those of the Gentiles, and showing that the Jews are shut out, if they wrangle against faith.
8:172
因為這樣所得的,比那一樣更為穩妥;
For this is more sure than that;
8:173
for faith does you no harm—do not wrangle—but even rescues you when you are in danger from the Law.
8:174
Then, since he had said 'to all the seed,' he defines to what kind of seed.
8:175
'To that which is of faith,' he says, joining kinship with the Gentiles, and showing that those who do not believe as he did cannot even pride themselves upon Abraham.
8:176
看哪,信又成就了第三樣事;
Behold, faith has wrought yet a third thing;
8:177
因為信使人與那義人的親屬關係更為緊密,並使他成為更眾多子孫的先祖;
for it made the kinship with the righteous man more exact, and declared him to be the forefather of more numerous descendants;
8:178
wherefore he did not say simply 'Abraham,' but 'the father of us who believe.'
8:179
Then, sealing what has been said with the testimony, he says, 'Even as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations.'
8:180
你看見這些事是從上頭如此安排的嗎?有人問:那麼,倘若他這話是指以實瑪利人、亞瑪力人,或夏甲的後裔而說的呢?其實,他愈往下說,就愈清楚指明這話並非指著那些人;
Do you see these things ordered from on high? What then, one says, if he says this concerning the Ishmaelites, or the Amalekites, or the Hagarenes? This indeed, as he proceeds, he shows more clearly not to have been spoken concerning those peoples;
8:181
for the present he presses on to another point, through which he also shows this very thing, defining the manner of such kinship, and doing so with much care.
8:182
For what does he say? 'Before Him whom he believed, even God.'
8:183
And what he says is of this kind:
8:184
Just as God is not a partial God, but the Father of all, so too is Abraham himself.
8:185
又說:正如神作父不是按著本性的親屬,乃是按著信所生的相屬,亞伯拉罕自己也照樣如此;
And again: Just as God is a Father not according to natural kinship, but according to the appropriation of faith, so too is Abraham himself;
8:186
for it is obedience that makes him the father of us all.
8:187
For since they thought this kinship to be nothing, clinging to that grosser one, he shows this to be the more authoritative, tracing it up to God the Word.
8:188
他與這些話一同還暗示了那一點:亞伯拉罕之得著這尊榮,乃是他信心的報償;
And along with these things he also intimates this: that Abraham received this as the recompense of his faith;
8:189
如此,這事若非如此,那麼縱使他作了地上一切居民的父,「在他面前」這句話也就無處著落,神的恩賜反倒殘缺不全了;
so that, unless this be so, even were he father of all who dwell upon the earth, the word 'before Him' finds no place, but the gift of God is mutilated;
8:190
for 'before Him' means 'in like manner.'
8:191
For where is the wonder, tell me, in being father of those born of him? For this every man among us possesses.
8:192
For the marvel is this: that those whom he did not have by nature, these he received from the gift of God.
8:193
So that, if you wish to believe that the patriarch was honoured, believe that he is the father of all.
8:194
And having said, 'Before Him whom he believed, even God,' he did not stop there, but went on to add:
8:195
「就是那叫死人復活、使無變為有的神」;
'Who quickens the dead, and calls the things that are not as though they were';
8:196
already laying beforehand the foundation of the discourse concerning the resurrection.
8:197
And it was also serviceable to the matter set before him.
8:198
For if it is possible for Him to quicken the dead, and to bring forth the things that are not as though they were, it is possible for Him also to make those who were not begotten of Abraham to be his children.
8:199
For this reason he did not say, 'And bringing forth the things that are not as though they were,' but 'calling'—thereby signifying the greater ease.
8:200
For just as it is easy for us to call the things that are, so for Him it is easy—and far easier—to give substance to the things that are not.
8:201
And having spoken of the gift of God as being great and unutterable, and having discoursed concerning His power, he shows also that Abraham's faith was worthy of the gift, lest you should suppose that he was honoured to no purpose.
8:202
And having roused up the hearer, lest the Jew be troubled, or doubt and say, 'And how is it possible for those who were not children to become children?' he shifts the discourse to the patriarch, and says:
8:203
'Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken:'
8:204
'So shall thy seed be.'
8:205
How did he against hope believe in hope? Against human hope, in the hope that is of God.
8:206
因為他既指明這事的偉大,又不容所說的話被人不信;
For he shows both the greatness of the matter, and does not allow what is said to be disbelieved;
8:207
which things are contrary to one another, yet faith blended them together.
8:208
但倘若他所說的是那些出於以色列的人,這話便是多餘的了;
But if he were speaking of those descended from Israel, this saying would be superfluous;
8:209
for they were born not according to faith, but according to nature.
8:210
他又把以撒引到我們眼前;
But he brings Isaac also into the midst;
8:211
for it was not on behalf of those Gentiles that he believed, but concerning the one who was to come from the barren woman.
8:212
If, then, the reward is to become the father of many nations, it is clear that it refers to those nations on whose behalf he believed.
8:213
That you may learn that he is speaking of these, listen to what follows:
8:214
'And not being weak in faith, he considered not his own body now already dead, when he was about a hundred years old, nor yet the deadness of Sarah's womb.'
8:215
你看他如何既陳明那些攔阻,又陳明義人那超越一切的崇高心志麼?他說,那所應許的乃是「在指望之外」的;
Do you see how he sets forth both the obstacles and the lofty resolve of the righteous man that overcame them all? 'Beyond hope,' he says, was that which was promised;
8:216
for he had no other Abraham to look to who had received a child in such a manner.
8:217
那在他以後的人,都仰望他為榜樣;
For those who came after him looked to him;
8:218
but he looked to no one, save to God alone.
8:219
Wherefore also he said, 'Beyond hope.'
8:220
其次,是那已死的身體;
Then, the body already dead;
8:221
再者,是撒拉子宮的斷絕;
and the deadness of Sarah's womb;
8:222
this too, a third and a fourth thing.
8:223
'But at the promise of God he wavered not through unbelief.'
8:224
For God gave no demonstration, nor did He work any sign, but there were bare words alone, promising the very things which nature did not warrant.
8:225
Yet nonetheless, 'He wavered not,' he says.
8:226
他沒有說「他沒有不信」,乃說「他沒有起疑惑」;
He did not say, 'He disbelieved not,' but 'He wavered not';
8:227
that is, he neither hesitated nor doubted, and that though the obstacles were so many.
8:228
From this we learn that even should God promise things impossible without number, and the hearer receive them not, the weakness lies not in the nature of the things, but in the folly of him who receives them not.
8:229
For since the discourse was about those who work and those who believe, he shows that the one who believes works more than the other, and needs greater power and much strength, and endures no ordinary toil.
8:230
For they made light of faith as though it involved no toil.
8:231
Setting himself, then, against this, he shows that not only he who achieves chastity or some other such virtue, but also he who displays faith, has need of greater power.
8:232
因為正如前者需要力量,好抵擋那放縱情慾的思念;
For just as the former has need of strength that he may beat off the reasonings of licentiousness,
8:233
so also the latter has need of a mighty soul, that he may thrust away the notions of unbelief.
8:234
那麼他是怎樣剛壯起來的呢?他說,是「因著信」,並未將這事交託給人的推理;
How, then, did he become strong? 'By faith,' he says, having committed the matter not to reasonings.
8:235
And how did he achieve this very faith? 'By giving glory to God,' he says, 'and being fully persuaded that what He had promised He was able also to perform.'
8:236
So then, not to be over-curious is to glorify God, just as to be over-curious is to transgress.
8:237
And if we, by being over-curious and inquisitive about things below, fail to give glory, much more shall we, by prying into the birth of the Master, suffer the utmost penalties as those who commit outrage.
8:238
For if we ought not to inquire into the manner of the resurrection, much more into those ineffable and awful things.
8:239
And he did not say simply 'having believed,' but 'being fully persuaded.'
8:240
因為信心正是如此:比那出於推理的憑據更為清晰,也更能叫人信服;
For such is faith: clearer than the demonstration that comes from reasonings, and more persuasive;
8:241
for it is not possible that another reasoning, coming in upon it, should thereafter shake it.
8:242
那憑言辭被說服的人,也能被說服而改變其心意;
For he who is persuaded by arguments can also be persuaded to change his mind;
8:243
but he who is established by faith has thenceforth walled off his hearing against the words that would corrupt it.
8:244
他既說亞伯拉罕因信稱義,便顯明他也因信榮耀了神;
Having said, then, that he was justified by faith, he shows that he also glorified God by faith;
8:245
which is most especially the mark of a good life.
8:246
'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.'
8:247
Behold, this was shown to belong to faith.
8:248
And again, just as works have need of power, so also does faith.
8:249
因為就行為而論,身體往往也分擔那汗勞;
For in the case of works, oftentimes the body too shares in the sweat;
8:250
but there the achievement belongs to the naked soul.
8:251
So that the toil is the greater, when it has not even the body to share the struggles with it.
8:252
你看他如何顯明凡屬乎行為的事,都以更豐盛的程度歸屬於信心──如在神面前誇口、需要能力與勞苦、又榮耀神?他既說「神所應許的必能作成」,在我看來也是預先宣告那將來的事;
Do you see how he has shown that all that belonged to works pertains, with even greater abundance, to faith — such as glorying before God, having need of power and toil, and again glorifying God? And having said, 'That what He had promised He was able also to perform,' he seems to me to be proclaiming beforehand something concerning the things to come;
8:253
for He promised not only present things, but also things to come.
8:254
So then, not to believe is the mark of a feeble and petty and wretched mind.
8:255
Wherefore, when some accuse us for our faith, let us in turn accuse them for their unbelief, as being wretched and faint-hearted and senseless and weak, and in no wise better disposed than asses.
8:256
For just as to believe is the mark of a lofty and nobly-gifted soul,
8:257
so to disbelieve is the mark of a most irrational and mean soul, one sunk down to the senselessness of the brutes.
8:258
Wherefore, leaving these, let us emulate the patriarch, and glorify God, even as he gave glory to Him.
8:259
「他將榮耀歸與神」是甚麼意思呢?就是他思想神的公義,並祂那無窮的能力;
And what is it, 'He gave Him glory'? He pondered upon His righteousness, His boundless power;
8:260
and having formed a fitting conception concerning Him, he was thus fully persuaded concerning the promises.
8:261
所以讓我們也用信心和行為榮耀祂,好叫我們也得著被祂榮耀為賞賜;
Let us, too, therefore glorify Him, both by faith and by works, that we may also receive as our reward to be glorified by Him;
8:262
for 'Those who glorify Me I will glorify,' He says.
8:263
And indeed, even were no reward laid up, this very thing were glory — to be counted worthy to glorify God.
8:264
因為人若向君王頌讚,即使別無所得,也單以此為榮耀;
For if men, when uttering praises to kings, pride themselves on this very thing alone, even though there be nothing else to be gained;
8:265
你且想想,我們的主因我們得著榮耀,這是何等的榮耀──正如祂因我們受褻瀆,乃是何等的刑罰;
consider how great glory it would be that our Master should be glorified because of us — even as it is punishment that He should be blasphemed because of us;
8:266
然而連這被榮耀的事,祂也是為我們的緣故願其成就的;
and yet even this very being glorified He wills to come about for our sakes;
8:267
for He Himself has no need of the thing.
8:268
Πόσον γὰρ οἴει τὸ μέσον εἶναι Θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων; ἆρα ὅσον ἀνθρώπων καὶ σκωλήκων;
For how great do you think the distance is between God and men? Is it as great as that between men and worms?
8:269
然而即或我設了這麼大的差距,卻仍是甚麼也沒說出;
But I have as yet said nothing, even in placing so great a distance between;
8:270
for it is not even possible to tell how great it is.
8:271
Would you, then, be willing to have great and splendid glory among worms? By no means.
8:272
既然你這愛慕榮耀的人尚且不願意這樣;
If, then, you who are a lover of glory would not be willing to have this;
8:273
how could He who is free from this passion, and who is so far exalted above, stand in need of glory from you? Yet nonetheless, though needing it not, He desires it — for your sake, he says.
8:274
For if He endured to become a servant for your sake, why do you marvel if He clings to these other things also for the same purpose? For He counts nothing unworthy of Himself, so long as it tends to our salvation.
8:275
Knowing these things, then, let us flee every sin, through which He Himself is blasphemed.
8:276
For 'As from the face of a serpent,' He says, 'flee from sin.'
8:277
'If you draw near to it, it will bite you;'
8:278
For she does not come to us, but it is we who desert of our own accord and go over to her.
8:279
For God has ordained even this, that the devil should not prevail by sheer tyranny; else no one could have stood against that strength of his.
8:280
For otherwise no one would have withstood the might of that one.
8:281
For this reason He drove him far off, as one drives away some robber and tyrant.
8:282
And unless he seizes a man naked and forsaken into his lairs, he does not dare to set upon him.
8:283
Unless he sees us journeying through the wilderness, he takes no courage to approach.
8:284
And the wilderness, the place of the devil, is nothing else than sin.
8:285
所以我們需要信德的盾牌、救恩的頭盔、聖靈的寶劍;
We have need, therefore, of the shield of faith, of the helmet of salvation, of the sword of the Spirit;
8:286
這不僅是為叫我們免受傷害,更是為叫我們在他妄圖撲來時,能砍下他的頭;
not only that we may not suffer harm, but that, even if he should wish to spring upon us, we may cut off his head;
8:287
we have need of unceasing prayers, that he may be crushed beneath our feet.
8:288
因為他既無恥又污穢,而且是從下方向我們爭戰;
For he is shameless and vile, and that too though he fights from below;
8:289
其緣故乃在於:我們不肯竭力使自己升高,超乎他所能擊打之處;
and the reason is that we are not zealous to become higher than his blows;
8:290
for neither is he able to be lifted up on high, but is dragged along below.
8:291
And if from the beginning God so ordered him, much more now.
8:292
But if you do not know what it means to fight from below, I will try to explain to you also the manner of this warfare.
8:293
What then is it to fight from below? It is to do battle by means of things below—by pleasure, by wealth, by all the affairs of this life.
8:294
因此,他若見有人向著天飛翔,首先他甚至無法撲到那人身上;
Wherefore, if he sees anyone soaring toward heaven, first of all he will not even be able to spring upon him;
8:295
其次,縱然他嘗試,也必迅速跌落;
and secondly, even if he attempts it, he will quickly fall;
8:296
因為他沒有腳——不要懼怕;
for he has no feet—do not be afraid;
8:297
他沒有翅膀——不要驚惶;
he has no wings—do not be dismayed;
8:298
he is dragged along upon the earth, and among the things of the earth.
8:299
Let nothing, then, be common between you and the earth, and you will have no need even of toil.
8:300
For neither does he know how to fight face to face, but like a serpent he hides himself among the thorns, ever lurking in the deceit of wealth.
8:301
And if you cut away the thorns, he will readily take flight, having become a coward; and if you know how to chant over him the divine incantations, he will straightway be wounded.
8:302
For we have—yes, we have—spiritual incantations: the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the power of the Cross.
8:303
This incantation not only drives the dragon forth from his holes and casts him into the fire, but also heals wounds.
8:304
但若有許多人念了它卻未得醫治,這是因他們自己信心微小,並非所念之言有甚麼軟弱無力;
But if many who have uttered it were not healed, this was owing to their own little faith, not to any weakness in the thing spoken;
8:305
正如當日有人推擁擠迫耶穌,卻毫無所得;
since Jesus too was thronged and pressed by some, and they gained nothing;
8:306
whereas the woman with the issue of blood, though she touched not His body but only the hem of His garment, stayed the long-standing fountains of blood.
8:307
This name is terrible both to demons and to passions and to diseases.
8:308
With this, therefore, let us adorn ourselves; with this let us fortify ourselves.
8:309
Thus also did Paul become great, and yet he too was of the same nature as we; but faith made him another instead of the man he was, and so great was his abundance that even his garments possessed much power.
8:310
那麼,我們還能有甚麼可辯解的呢?若說那些人連影子和衣物都能驅逐死亡,我們卻連禱告也不能制伏情慾?這是甚麼緣故呢?乃是心志上有極大的差異;
Of what defense, then, should we be worthy, if of those men even the shadows and the garments drove away death, while of us not even our prayers subdue the passions? What then is the cause? Great is the difference of disposition;
8:311
至於本性方面,我們原是同等相共的;
since in respect of nature we are equal and share alike;
8:312
因為他也和我們一樣受生、受養育,住在地上,呼吸同樣的空氣;
for he too, like us, was born and nourished, and dwelt upon the earth, and breathed the air;
8:313
but in all else he was far greater and better than we—in zeal, in faith, in love.
8:314
所以,讓我們效法他,也讓基督藉著我們發聲;
Let us therefore imitate him, and grant that through us also Christ may speak;
8:315
or rather, He it is who is more truly ours, and for this cause He fashioned this instrument, and does not wish it to remain useless and idle, but desires ever to have it in His hands.
8:316
Why then do you not make it ready for the Artist's hand, but slacken the strings, and make them softer through luxury, and render the whole lyre useless to Him—when you ought rather to tighten and brace the members, and to make them firm with the spiritual salt? For if He sees it thus tuned, Christ will make music even through our soul.
8:317
And when this comes to pass, you will behold even angels leaping for joy, and archangels, and the Cherubim.
8:318
所以,願我們配得那雙無瑕的手;
Let us therefore become worthy of those blameless hands;
8:319
讓我們懇求祂也來撥動我們的心弦;
let us entreat Him to strike upon our heart as well;
8:320
或者說,祂連懇求也不需要;
or rather, He has no need even of entreaty;
8:321
only make it worthy of that touch, and He Himself will run to you first.
8:322
For if He hastens for the sake of things to come (for He wove the encomium for Paul while he had not yet become such a man), when He sees the work perfected, what will He not do? And if Christ makes music, the Spirit too will assuredly light upon us, and we shall become better than heaven, having not the sun and moon fixed within our body, but the Master of sun and moon and angels dwelling and walking within us.
8:323
These things I say, not that we may raise the dead, nor that we may cleanse lepers, but that we may display that which is greater than all these signs—love.
8:324
For wherever this good thing is, straightway the Son also is present together with the Father, and the grace of the Spirit visits.
8:325
For where two or three, He says, are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.
8:326
Now this belongs to great affection, and to those who love exceedingly—to have those they love on either side of them.
8:327
And who is so wretched, He says, as not to wish to have Christ in the midst? We, who are at strife with one another.
8:328
And perhaps someone will laugh at me and say, What do you mean? Do you see us all under the same walls, under the same fold of the church, standing under the same sheepfold in concord, no one at quarrel, crying out together under the same shepherd, hearing together the things spoken, sending up together our prayers—and yet you speak of strife and of division? I do speak of strife, and I am not mad, neither am I beside myself.
8:329
For I see indeed what I see, and I know that we are under the same fold and the same shepherd.
8:330
And for this very reason I lament most of all—that though so many things draw us together, yet we are at strife.
8:331
有人說:你在這裡見著甚麼紛爭了?在這裡確實沒有;
And what strife, he says, have you seen here? Here indeed none;
8:332
然而一等我們散去,這人就控告那人,那人就公然侮辱,又有人嫉妒、貪婪、搶奪;
but when we have dispersed, one accuses another, another openly insults, another envies, is greedy and plunders;
8:333
and another does violence, another lusts wickedly, another stitches together countless deceits.
8:334
And if it were possible to lay bare our souls, then you would see all these things clearly, and would know that I am not mad.
8:335
Do you not see in the camps that, when there is peace, they lay aside their arms and pass over, naked and unguarded, into the camp of the enemy? But when they are fenced with arms, and there are watches and outposts and sleepless nights, and fire is kept perpetually burning, such a state is no longer peace, but war.
8:336
這同樣的情形,在我們中間也可以看見;
This same thing may be seen also among us;
8:337
因為我們彼此提防、彼此懼怕,各人湊到鄰舍耳邊交談,一見有別人走近,就默不作聲,把話題盡都從中間收起;
for we guard ourselves against one another and are afraid, and each of us converses with his neighbor close to the ear, and if we see another coming up, we fall silent and draw back everything out of the midst;
8:338
which is not the mark of men who are confident, but of those who are exceedingly on their guard.
8:339
But we do these things, he says, not in order to wrong others, but in order not to be wronged.
8:340
For this reason I mourn—that living in the midst of brethren, we have need of a guard against being wronged, and kindle so many fires, and set watches and outposts.
8:341
And the cause is that falsehood abounds, deceit abounds, great is the overthrow of love, and there is a truceless war.
8:342
因此,人可以發現有許多人竟信任外邦人過於信任基督徒;
Wherefore one may find many who trust the heathen more than Christians;
8:343
and yet of how much shame are these things worthy? of how many tears, of how many wailings? And what am I to do? he says; so-and-so is perverse and wicked.
8:344
And where is your philosophy? where are the apostolic laws that bid us bear one another's burdens? For if you know not how to deal with a brother, when will you be able to deal with a stranger
8:345
aright? If you know not how to handle your own member, when will you be able to draw in the outsider and join him to yourself? But what am I to do? I am in great difficulty as regards a flow of tears, else I would have let loose abundant fountains from my eyes, according to that prophet, seeing upon this plain wars past number more grievous than those.
8:346
因為那位先知看見蠻族來攻,就說:「我的肚腹疼痛」;
For he, seeing the barbarians coming on, said, I am pained in my belly;
8:347
but I, seeing men drawn up in battle-line under one general, and then standing against one another, biting and tearing one another's members—some for money's sake, some for glory, some simply and at random mocking and jeering, and inflicting countless wounds upon one another, and corpses more grievous than those of war, and the name of brethren left henceforth a bare name only—I cannot devise any lamentation worthy of this tragedy.
8:348
Reverence therefore, reverence this table of which we all partake, the Christ who was slain for our sake, the sacrifice that lies upon it.
8:349
Robbers who share salt together are robbers no longer toward those with whom they have shared it; the table changes their disposition, and makes those fiercer than wild beasts gentler than sheep.
8:350
Yet we, who partake of such a table, who share in such food, take up arms against one another, when we ought to do this against the devil who wars against us all.
8:351
For this very reason we grow weaker, while he grows stronger with each passing day.
8:352
For we do not stand shielded together against him, but stand with him against one another, and use him as our general in such battle-lines, when we ought to war against him alone.
8:353
But now, leaving him aside, we bend our bows against the brethren.
8:354
What bows? someone asks. Those that come from the tongue and the mouth.
8:355
For it is not only javelins and arrows, but words too, that inflict wounds far more bitter than arrows.
8:356
And how shall we be able to bring this war to an end? someone asks. If you consider that in speaking evil of your brother you pour forth filth from your mouth; if you consider that you are slandering a member of Christ, that you are devouring your own flesh, that you are making that dread and impartial tribunal more bitter for yourself, that the arrow destroys not the one struck but you who shot it.
8:357
然而他虧負了你、待你不善麼?你當歎息,卻不可惡言相向;
But has he wronged you and done you evil? Groan, but do not speak evil;
8:358
weep, not for the wrong done to you, but for his ruin, just as your Master also wept over Judas, not because He Himself was being crucified, but because that man was betraying Him.
8:359
Has he insulted and reviled you? Beseech God to become merciful to him speedily.
8:360
他是你的弟兄,與你同經那一樣的產難;
He is your brother; he was brought forth in the same birth-pangs as you;
8:361
he is a member of yours; he has been called to the same table.
8:362
But he tramples upon me all the more, someone says.
8:363
Then greater and more abundant is your reward.
8:364
For this reason above all it is right to lay aside your anger, since he has received a mortal blow, since the devil has wounded him.
8:365
所以你自己不要回擊,也不要與他一同跌倒;
Do not, then, strike back yourself, nor cast yourself down together with him;
8:366
因為只要你還站立,你就能連他也一同救回;
for as long as you stand, you are able to save him too;
8:367
but if you throw yourself down by insulting in return, who will raise you up thereafter? He who was wounded? But he cannot, lying prostrate.
8:368
Or you, who have fallen along with him? And how, when you were not sufficient to give a hand to yourself, will you have strength for another? Stand, then, nobly, and putting forth your shield, drag your brother, though he lies dead, out of the fray by your longsuffering.
8:369
Has anger wounded him? Do not you also wound him, but rather draw out the arrow that was there before.
8:370
因為我們若這樣彼此相待,眾人都必速速痊癒;
For if we treat one another thus, we shall all speedily be made whole;
8:371
but if we take up arms against one another, there is henceforth no need even of the devil for our destruction.
8:372
For every war is grievous, but civil war most of all.
8:373
But this is even more grievous than civil war, inasmuch as the claims of our commonwealth upon us are greater—indeed, greater than those of kinship itself.
8:374
從前一位兄弟殺了亞伯,流了骨肉之親的血;
Once a brother killed Abel, and shed kindred blood;
8:375
but this murder is more lawless than that, by as much as the ties of kinship are greater and the manner of the death more grievous.
8:376
For he wounded the body, but you drive the sword against the soul.
8:377
But did you suffer evil first? Yet it is not the suffering, but the doing of evil, that is truly to suffer evil.
8:378
該隱行兇,亞伯被殺;
Cain slew, Abel was slain;
8:379
which, then, was the dead man? He who cried out after his death—
8:380
for 'The voice,' Scripture says, 'of the blood of your brother Abel cries out to Me'—
8:381
or he who while living trembled and was afraid? For this man, this man, was more pitiable than any corpse.
8:382
Have you seen how it is better to be wronged, even if one should go so far as murder? Learn how it is worse to do wrong, even if one should prevail to the point of shedding blood.
8:383
那人擊殺了他的兄弟,然而一個得了冠冕,另一個卻受了刑罰;
That man struck down and slew his brother, yet the one was crowned while the other was punished;
8:384
Abel was slain and murdered contrary to justice, yet the one, in dying, accused and destroyed and overpowered,
8:385
while the other, though living, was silent and ashamed and stood convicted, and brought about the very opposite of what he desired.
8:386
因為他殺他,乃是因見他蒙愛,指望連那份愛也把他從中除去;
For he slew him because he saw him beloved, expecting to cast him out of that love as well;
8:387
but he only intensified the affection the more, and God sought him out even more after his death, saying, 'Where is Abel your brother?'
8:388
因為你並沒有用嫉妒澆滅那愛慕,反倒把它點燃了;
For you did not quench the affection by your envy, but rather kindled it;
8:389
you did not diminish his honor by the slaughter, but rather increased it the more.
8:390
因為在此以前,神原叫他順服於你;
For before this God had even made him subject to you;
8:391
but since you slew him, even in death he shall avenge himself upon you—
8:392
so great is my affection toward him.
8:393
Which, then, was the one condemned? He who punished, or he who was punished? He who enjoyed such honor from God, or he who was given over to a new and strange chastisement? 'You did not fear him while he lived,' Scripture says;
8:394
所以如今他既已死了,你倒要懼怕他;
'therefore fear him now that he is dead;
8:395
you did not tremble when about to bring the sword upon him;
8:396
你流了那血以後,卻要被無盡的戰兢所纏擾;
you shall be seized with perpetual trembling after shedding the blood;
8:397
他活著的時候作你的僕役,你尚且不能容忍;
while he lived he was a servant to you, and you could not endure it;
8:398
therefore, having died, he has become to you a fearful master.'
8:399
Reflecting on these things, then, beloved, let us flee envy, let us quench malice, rendering love to one another in return, that we may reap from it the good things both in the present life and in the life to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of ages.
