'But now I go to Jerusalem, ministering to the saints.'
30:2
'For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem.'
30:3
'They have been pleased, and indeed they are their debtors.'
30:4
Since he had said, 'I no longer have any place in these regions, and I have had a longing for many years to come to you,' but was yet going to delay still further —
30:5
in order that it might not be thought that he was mocking them, he states also the cause for which he defers for the present, and says that 'I go to Jerusalem.'
30:6
他表面看來是在陳述延遲的緣故,但藉著這些話,他也另有安排——就是要激勵那些人行施捨,使他們更加熱心;
And though he seems to be stating the pretext for his delay, yet through these words he also contrives something else — namely, to spur those men on to almsgiving, and to make them more zealous;
30:7
since, had he not been eager to accomplish this, it would have sufficed to say, 'I go to Jerusalem.'
30:8
But as it is, he adds also the cause of his journey abroad:
30:9
'For I go,' he says, 'ministering to the saints.'
30:10
他停留在這一點上,並引動種種的思量,說:「他們是欠債的」,又說:「外邦人既然分享了他們屬靈的好處,就當在肉身的好處上供給他們」;
And he dwells upon the point, and sets reasonings in motion, saying that 'They are debtors,' and that, 'If the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, they ought also to minister to them in carnal things';
30:11
that those others might learn to emulate these.
30:12
正因如此,我們尤當讚嘆他的智慧,因他想出了這樣一種勸勉的方式;
For this reason above all one ought to marvel at his wisdom, that he devised this very manner of counsel;
30:13
for in this way they bore it better than had he spoken by way of direct exhortation.
30:14
For indeed they would have thought themselves insulted, had he, in order to urge them on, brought forward the Corinthians and Macedonians before them.
30:15
It is for this very reason that there he thus urges the one party on, saying:
30:16
「弟兄們,我把神賜給馬其頓眾教會的恩典告訴你們」;
'Moreover I make known to you the grace of God which has been given to the Churches of Macedonia';
30:17
and the Macedonians again by these words:
30:18
'For your zeal has stirred up the greater number.'
30:19
And with the Galatians too he does the same, as when he says:
30:20
'As I gave order to the Churches of Galatia, so do you also.'
30:21
But with the Romans it is not so; rather he speaks with more reserve.
30:22
And he does this same thing also in the matter of the preaching, as when he says:
30:23
'What? Did the word of God go forth from you? Or did it come to you only?' For nothing is so mighty as zeal.
30:24
所以他在許多地方都提出這一點;
Therefore he sets it forth in many places;
30:25
因為他在別處也說:「我在各教會中所吩咐的」;
for indeed elsewhere too he says, 'As I ordain in all the Churches';
30:26
and again, 'As I teach everywhere in every Church.'
30:27
And to the Colossians too he said that 'the Gospel of God is bearing fruit and growing in all the world.'
30:28
This very thing, then, he does here also in the matter of the alms.
30:29
且看他用詞何等宏偉;
And observe how magnificently he has used his words;
30:30
for he did not say, 'I go carrying alms,' but 'ministering.'
30:31
But if Paul ministers, consider how great the thing that is done, when the teacher of the whole world
30:32
teacher deigns to convey it, and, though about to journey to Rome, and though so longing for them, prefers this to that.
30:33
'For Macedonia and Achaia were well pleased'—that is, they approved, they desired—'to make a certain contribution.'
30:34
Again he did not say 'Alms,' but 'Contribution' (fellowship).
30:35
And the word 'certain' he did not put down without purpose, but that he might not seem to reproach these people.
30:36
他也不僅僅說「給窮人」,而是說「給聖徒中的窮人」;
And he did not simply say 'to the poor,' but 'to the poor among the saints';
30:37
making the commendation twofold, both that from virtue and that from poverty.
30:38
And not even with this alone was he content, but he added that 'they are debtors.'
30:39
Then he shows how they are debtors.
30:40
'For if the Gentiles,' he says, 'have been made partakers of their spiritual things, they owe it also to minister to them in carnal things.'
30:41
基督是為他們而來的,一切應許都是給那些出於猶太人的,基督也是從他們而出;
For their sakes Christ came, to them were all the promises made who are of the Jews, and from them came Christ;
30:42
所以祂也說:「救恩是從猶太人出來的」;
wherefore also He said, 'Salvation is of the Jews';
30:43
from thence the apostles, from thence the prophets, from thence all good things.
30:44
In all these things, then, the whole world has partaken.
30:45
'If therefore,' he says, 'you have shared in the greater things, and, entering in, have enjoyed the feasts prepared for those men, partaking of what was set before you, according to the parable of the Gospel;'
30:46
'you owe it also to share your carnal things and to impart them to those men.'
30:47
他沒有說「相通」,而是說「供職(服事)」;
And he did not say 'to share,' but 'to minister';
30:48
placing them in the rank of deacons, and of those who pay tribute to kings.
30:49
他也沒有說「你們肉身的好處」,如同他說過「他們屬靈的好處」那樣;
And he did not say, 'In your carnal things,' as he had said, 'In their spiritual things';
30:50
因為屬靈的事是屬乎那些人的,但肉身的事卻不單屬乎這些人,乃是眾人所共有的;
for the spiritual things are theirs, but the carnal things are not these men's only, but common to all;
30:51
for He commanded that money should belong to all, and not to those who possess it alone.
30:52
他既成全了這事,又把這果子印給了他們;
Having therefore accomplished this, and having sealed to them this fruit;
30:53
就是說,好像存入王家的府庫,存入不可侵犯而穩妥的地方;
that is, having deposited it as into royal treasuries, as into an inviolable and safe place;
30:54
他又沒有說「捐濟」,而是再說「果子」;
and he did not say, 'Alms,' but again, 'The fruit';
30:55
showing that those who give are the gainers.
30:56
'I will go by way of you into Spain.'
30:57
Again he makes mention of Spain, showing his unwearied diligence and his fervor concerning those people.
30:58
'And I know that, when I come to you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the Gospel of Christ.'
30:59
What is 'in the fulness of the blessing'? Either he speaks of money, or simply of all right achievements.
30:60
因為他多半慣以「恩福(祝福)」來稱呼捐濟;
For 'blessing,' for the most part, he is wont to call the alms;
30:61
正如他說:「當作恩福,不當作勉強(貪心的勒索)」;
as when he says, 'As a blessing, not as an exaction of covetousness';
30:62
and there was an old custom too of calling the thing thus.
30:63
但既然他在此加上「福音的」,因此我們說他所講的不單是指錢財,也是指其餘的一切;
But since here he added, 'Of the Gospel,' for this reason we say that he spoke not of money only, but also of all the rest;
30:64
as though he had said, 'I know that, when I come, I shall see you approved in all things, and abounding in good things, and worthy of countless praises for what pertains to the Gospel.'
30:65
And this too is a marvelous kind of counsel, to forestall them with praises.
30:66
For when he declines to do this by way of exhortation, he comes to this manner of correction.
30:67
'Now I beseech you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the love of the Spirit.'
30:68
Here again he puts forward Christ and the Spirit, and in no way makes mention of the Father.
30:69
But I have said these things, that when you see him making mention of Father and Son, or of the Father only, you may set aside neither the Son nor the Spirit.
30:70
And he did not say, 'Of the Spirit,' but 'Of the love of the Spirit.'
30:71
For even as Christ loved the world, and the Father, so also does the Spirit.
30:72
But what is it that you beseech, tell me? 'That you strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from those who are disobedient in Judea.'
30:73
如此看來,有一場大爭戰擺在他面前;
A great contest, then, lay before him;
30:74
wherefore also he calls in their prayers.
30:75
他沒有說「使我能與他們交手」,而是說「使我得以脫離」;
And he did not say, 'That I may grapple with them,' but 'That I may be delivered';
30:76
as Christ commanded, 'Pray that you enter not into temptation.'
30:77
And in saying these things, he showed that certain wicked wolves would set upon him, and beasts rather than men.
30:78
And from this he prepared yet another point, namely to show that he had justly undertaken to minister to the saints, if indeed those who were disobedient were so many that he even prays to be delivered from them.
30:79
因為那些身處這許多仇敵之中的人,也有因饑荒而滅亡的危險;
For those who dwelt in the midst of so many enemies were also in danger of perishing by famine;
30:80
wherefore of necessity they had to be supplied from elsewhere.
30:81
'And that my ministration for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints.'
30:82
That is, that my sacrifice may be acceptable, that they may receive with eagerness the things given.
30:83
Do you see how once again he exalts the dignity of those who receive, seeing that he stands in need of the prayers of so great a people, that the things sent may be accepted? And from this he shows yet another thing also: that it is not enough merely to give alms in order for the gift to be received.
30:84
For when a man gives under compulsion, or out of injustice, or for the sake of vainglory, the fruit is lost.
30:85
That I may come to you in joy through the will of God.
30:86
Just as at the outset he said, 'If by any means now at length I may have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you,'
30:87
so also here he takes refuge in the same will, and says that: For this reason I hasten, and pray to be delivered from thence, that I may quickly see you, and see you with gladness, dragging along from thence no despondency.
30:88
See how once more he displays his freedom from pride.
30:89
For he did not say, 'That I may teach you and instruct you,' but, 'That I may find rest together with you.'
30:90
其實正是他自己在爭戰、在角力;
And yet it was he himself who was the one contending and boxing;
30:91
how then does he say, 'That I may rest together with you'? By showing them favour in this too, and by making them more eager, in that he makes them sharers of the crowns and shows that they also are contending and toiling.
30:92
Then, as he is ever wont to do, after the exhortation he adds the prayer, saying:
30:93
Now the God of peace be with you all.
30:94
I commend unto you Phoebe our sister, who is a deaconess of the Church which is at Cenchreae.
30:95
你看他用了多少話來尊崇她;
See by how many things he sets her forth with honour;
30:96
因為他在眾人之先題起她,並稱她為姊妹;
for he made mention of her before all the rest, and called her sister;
30:97
and it is no small thing to be called the sister of Paul.
30:98
他又加上她的職分,稱她為女執事;
He added also her rank, calling her a deaconess;
30:99
That you receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints.
30:100
That is, for the Lord's sake, that she may enjoy honour among you.
30:101
因為人若為主的緣故接待人,縱使所接待的並非甚麼大人物,也必殷勤地接待;
For he who receives another for the Lord's sake, even though the one he receives be no great person, receives him with earnestness;
30:102
and when she is moreover a holy woman, consider of how great attentiveness it is just that she should be counted worthy.
30:103
For this reason he added, 'As becometh saints,' as it behoves such persons to be received.
30:104
For she has a twofold ground for being attended to by you: both that she is received for the Lord's sake, and that she herself is holy.
30:105
And that you assist her in whatever matter she may have need of you.
30:106
你看這說法何等不使人為難?因為他甚至沒有說「叫你們替她解決難處」,乃是說「叫你們獻上你們的一分,伸出援手,在她凡有需要你們之處」;
Do you see how free from burdensomeness it is? For he did not even say, 'That you deliver her from trouble,' but, 'That you contribute your part, and reach out a hand, and in whatever she may have need of you';
30:107
不是在凡百的事上,乃是在她需要你們的事上;
not in whatever things there may be at all, but in whatever she may need of you;
30:108
and she will need help in those matters in which you may have authority.
30:109
Then again the praise is unspeakable;
30:110
For she herself also has been a succourer of many, and of my own self.
30:111
Do you see his discernment? First the encomiums, then in the middle the request, then again he has placed the encomiums, on either side shielding the appeal with the praises of that blessed woman.
30:112
她既從保羅得著如此的見證,怎能不是有福的呢?她竟能幫助那位匡正普天下的人。這正是她眾善之中的巔峰;
For how is she not blessed, who has enjoyed so great a testimony from Paul, she who was able to render aid even to him who set the whole world in order? For this is the crowning point of her good deeds;
30:113
wherefore also he set it down last, saying, 'And of my own self.'
30:114
And what does 'and of my own self' mean? Of the herald of the whole world, of him who suffered so many things, of him who was sufficient for ten thousand.
30:115
Let us therefore imitate, both men and women, that holy woman, and her also who comes after her together with her husband.
30:116
And who are these? Salute, he says, Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow-labourers in Christ Jesus.
30:117
路加也為他們的德行作見證;
To their virtue Luke also bears witness;
30:118
一面,是當他說保羅與他們同住的時候;
this, on the one hand, when he says that Paul abode with them;
30:119
因為他們是以製造帳棚為業的;
for they were tent-makers by trade;
30:120
and this, on the other hand, when he shows the wife taking Apollos to herself and instructing him in the way of the Lord.
30:121
But far greater are the things which Paul says.
30:122
他說了甚麼呢?他先稱他們為同工,指明他們是他那說不盡的勞苦與危險的同伴;
For what does he say? First he calls them fellow-labourers, showing them to be sharers in his unspeakable toils and dangers;
30:123
then he says that, for my life they laid down their own neck.
30:124
Do you see martyrs made perfect? For it was likely that under Nero the dangers were countless, when he even gave orders that all the Jews should be separated from Rome.
30:125
Unto whom not I only give thanks, but also all the Churches of the Gentiles.
30:126
Here he hints at their hospitality and the ministration from their
30:127
money, marvelling at them, that they both poured out their own blood, and set forth their whole substance as common to all.
30:128
你看見這些高貴的婦人,絲毫沒有因她們的性別而被攔阻,不能奔那德行的路程嗎?這也是理所當然的;
Do you see noble women, in no way hindered by their nature from the course of virtue? And this is very fitting;
30:129
for in Christ Jesus there is neither male nor female.
30:130
他論到前一位婦人所說的話,也照樣論到這一位;
And what he said concerning the former woman, this also he says concerning this one;
30:131
for concerning her too he said, 'Who has been a succourer of many, and of my own self';
30:132
and concerning this one again, that 'Not I only give thanks, but also all the Churches of the Gentiles.'
30:133
For lest he should seem to say these things out of flattery, he brings forward other witnesses of the women, far more numerous.
30:134
And the Church that is in their house.
30:135
For they were so highly esteemed that they even made their house a church, both by making all in it believers, and by opening it to all strangers.
30:136
For it is not without cause that he is wont to call houses churches, unless there be much godliness and much of the fear of God rooted in them.
30:137
For this reason he said also to the Corinthians, 'Salute Aquila and Priscilla, with the Church that is in their house';
30:138
and writing concerning Onesimus he says, 'Paul, unto Philemon and to Apphia the beloved, and to the Church in thy house.'
30:139
For it is possible even for one living in marriage to be admirable and noble.
30:140
你看,這兩位也是在婚姻之中,卻大放異彩,何況他們的行業也算不上甚麼光彩的行業;
Behold then, these too were in marriage, and shone exceedingly, and yet their occupation was not even a brilliant one;
30:141
然而德行遮蓋了這一切,使他們顯得比日頭更明亮;
but nevertheless virtue hid all these things, and showed them to be brighter than the sun;
30:142
and neither their craft nor their wedlock did them any harm, but that love which Christ required, this they displayed.
30:143
For 'Greater love hath no man than this,' he says, 'that a man lay down his life for his friends.'
30:144
凡作門徒的記號,他們都成全了;
And that which is the mark of a disciple, this they accomplished;
30:145
for they took up the cross and followed.
30:146
For they who did this for Paul's sake, much more did they display this manliness for Christ's sake.
30:147
Let both rich and poor hear these things.
30:148
因為那靠雙手作工度日、經營一間店鋪的人,尚且顯出如此的慷慨,以致成為許多教會的益處;
For if they who lived by the labour of their hands and presided over a workshop displayed such munificence as to become useful to many Churches;
30:149
那富足卻輕忽窮人的,還能有甚麼可推諉的呢?因為那些人為神所看為美的事,連自己的血都不顧惜,你卻連一點錢財也吝惜,且屢屢輕看自己的性命?或者有人要說:他們待師傅雖是這樣,待門徒卻未必如此?其實連這話也是說不得的;
what pardon could they have who are rich and yet overlook the poor? For those spared not even their blood for what seemed good to God, while you spare even a little money, often despising your own soul? But say you, such were those toward the teacher, but not such toward the disciples? Nay, not even this can be said;
30:150
for even the Churches of the Gentiles, he says, give thanks to them.
30:151
And yet they were of the Jews, but nevertheless they so believed sincerely as to minister even to those with all eagerness.
30:152
Such ought women to be: 'Not with braided hair, or gold, or costly array,' but adorning themselves with these good deeds.
30:153
請告訴我,有哪位王后曾如此光耀?有哪位王后像這位織帳棚者的妻子這樣被人傳頌?她的名字掛在眾人口中,不是十年,也不是二十年,而是直到基督再來之時;
For what queen, tell me, ever shone so brightly? What queen is so celebrated as this wife of the tentmaker? She is on all men's lips, not for ten years, nor for twenty, but until the coming of Christ;
30:154
and all men proclaim her praise for such things as adorn her more than the royal diadem.
30:155
For what is greater, what is even equal, to becoming the protectress of Paul, to preserving through her own perils the teacher of the whole world? Consider then how many queens are passed over in silence, while the tentmaker's wife is everywhere carried on men's lips together with the tentmaker; and as much of the earth as the sun looks upon, over so wide a world does the glory of this woman also run.
30:156
Both Persians and Scythians and Thracians, and those who dwell at the ends of the earth, sing of this woman's love of wisdom and count her blessed.
30:157
為要得著這樣的見證,何等的財富、何等的冠冕與紫袍,你豈不甘願拋棄?沒有人能說:他們在危難中固然如此、在錢財上固然慷慨,卻疏忽了福音的傳講;
How much wealth, how many diadems and purple robes would you not gladly cast away to receive such a testimony? For no one could say that they were of this sort amid dangers and lavish with their money, yet neglected the preaching;
30:158
for it is on this account that he calls them fellow-workers and fellow-ministers.
30:159
他這蒙揀選的器皿,並不以稱一位婦人為同工而羞恥,反倒以此為榮;
And he is not ashamed to call a woman his fellow-minister—he, the chosen vessel—but even glories in it;
30:160
for he does not regard nature, but crowns the free choice of the will.
30:161
Τί τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἴσον; ποῦ νῦν ὑμῖν πλοῦτος πανταχοῦ περιῤῥέων; ποῦ δὲ τῶν ὄψεων καλλωπισμός;
What is equal to this adornment? Where now for you is the wealth that flows in on every side? Where the beautifying of the countenance?
30:162
Where the empty glory? Learn well this woman's adornment—one that is not draped about the body but beautifies the soul, one that is never laid aside, one that lies not in a chest but is stored up in the heavens.
30:163
你當看他們為傳道所受的勞苦、在作見證中所得的冠冕、在錢財上的慷慨、對保羅的愛、對基督的深情;
Behold their toil for the preaching, their crown in bearing witness, their generosity with money, their love toward Paul, their affection toward Christ;
30:164
set beside these your own things—your eagerness after money, your rivalry with harlots, your contention over grass.
30:165
And then you will see what sort they were, and what sort you are.
30:166
Or rather, do not merely compare, but also emulate this woman; and laying aside the burdens of the withering grass (for this is what the costliness of garments is), take up the adornment that comes from heaven, and learn from where those around Priscilla became such as they were.
30:167
那麼,他們是從何處成了那樣的人?他們接待保羅住了兩年;
From where, then, did they become such? They lodged Paul for two years;
30:168
兩年之久,豈能不在他們的靈魂上成就何等的事?「那麼,」有人說,「我既沒有保羅,我又能如何呢?」只要你願意,你可以比他們更確切地得著他;
and what would two years not have wrought upon their soul? 'What then am I to do,' someone says, 'seeing that I have not Paul?' If you are willing, you may have him more exactly than they did;
30:169
for it was not the sight of Paul that made them such, but the words of Paul.
30:170
So that, if you will, you may have Paul and Peter and John and the whole choir of the prophets together with the apostles conversing with you continually.
30:171
For take up the books of these blessed ones, and read continually in their writings, and they will be able to make you like the tentmaker's wife.
30:172
我又何必單提保羅呢?只要你願意,你連保羅的主自己也可以得著;
And why do I speak of Paul? For if you will, you shall have Paul's own Master;
30:173
for through Paul's tongue He too will discourse with you.
30:174
還有另一種方式,你也能接待祂:就是當你接待眾聖徒之時,當你服事那些信靠祂的人之時;
And in yet another way again you will be able to receive Him: when you receive the saints, when you tend those who believe in Him;
30:175
thus, even when they have departed, you will have many memorials of devotion.
30:176
For even the table on which the holy man ate, and the seat on which he sat, and the bed on which he lay down, know how to pierce the heart of the one who received him, even after that man has gone.
30:177
How, then, do you think that Shunammite woman was pierced to the heart when she entered the upper room where Elisha used to abide, and saw the table and the bed on which that holy man used to sleep? How much devotion she must have drawn from this! For unless it had been so, she would not have laid her dead child there, had she not reaped much benefit from that place.
30:178
因為經過了這麼久的時日,當我們進入保羅曾停留、曾被捆鎖、曾坐下講論的地方,我們尚且如插翅一般被提起,並藉這些地方被引回到對那日子的追念;
For if, after so long a time, when we enter the places where Paul stayed, where he was bound, where he sat and discoursed, we are given wings, and by these places are carried back to the memory of that day;
30:179
那麼當這些事還新近之時,那些以敬虔接待聖徒的人,想必又是何等的感受呢?所以我們既知道這事,就當接待聖徒,好使我們的家宅發光,脫離荊棘,使我們的居所成為港灣;
then while these events were still fresh, what must those who lodged the saints with devotion likely have felt? Knowing this, therefore, let us receive the saints, that our house may be radiant, that it may be freed from thorns, that our dwelling may become a haven;
30:180
and let us receive them, and wash their feet.
30:181
You are not better than Sarah, nor of nobler birth, nor of greater means—even if you be a queen.
30:182
For she had three hundred and eighteen home-born servants, at a time when even to have two children was accounted wealth.
30:183
And why do I speak of three hundred and eighteen household servants? She possessed the whole world in the seed and the promises; she had for her husband the friend of God; she had God Himself as her protector, which was greater than any kingdom.
30:184
Yet, being in such splendor and glory, she herself kneaded the flour and ministered in all the rest, and again stood by the guests as they feasted, in the rank of a serving-maid.
30:185
You are not of nobler birth than Abraham, who did the tasks of servants—after those trophies, after those victories, after the honor shown him by the king of Egypt, after driving off the kings of the Persians and setting up his glorious trophies.
30:186
Do not look at this, that the saints who are brought to you appear mean, and are often poor and clothed in rags; but call to mind that voice which says:
30:187
'Inasmuch as you did it to one of these least, you did it to Me;'
30:188
and, 'Do not despise one of these little ones, for their angels do always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven;'
30:189
and receive them with eagerness, as they bring you ten thousand blessings through their salutations of peace.
30:190
除撒拉之外,你也當思念利百加,她既打水、供人飲用,又邀請那客旅進到裡面,把一切驕傲都踐踏在腳下;
And along with Sarah reckon also Rebekah, who both drew water and gave drink and called the stranger within, trampling underfoot all pride;
30:191
and for this very reason she received great rewards for her hospitality.
30:192
But you, if you are willing, shall receive rewards even greater than theirs.
30:193
因為神所賜給你的果子,不僅僅是一個孩子,還有諸天和那裡的美善,以及脫離地獄的拯救和罪的赦免;
For God will give you as fruit not merely a child, but also heaven and the good things there, and deliverance from Gehenna and the forgiveness of sins;
30:194
for great, exceedingly great, is the fruit of hospitality.
30:195
耶忒羅也是如此,他雖是外邦人,卻得著了那位以何等權柄向海發號施令的人作他的女婿;
So too Jethro, and that though he was a barbarian, received as his son-in-law the one who with such authority laid his command upon the sea;
30:196
for it was his daughters who netted this noble prey.
30:197
因此,你當默想這些事,思念那些婦人的勇毅與敬虔的智慧,把眼前的驕矜——衣裳的華飾、金飾的奢華、香膏的塗抹——都踐踏在腳下;
Reflecting, then, on these things, and considering the courage of those women and their love of wisdom, trample underfoot the pride that is present—the beautifying with garments, the costliness of gold ornaments, the anointing with perfumes;
30:198
and forsaking the mincing and the affected daintiness and the walking with studied rhythm, bring all this care into the soul, and kindle in your mind the longing for the heavens.
30:199
因為這樣的愛若抓住了你,你就會看清那污泥與糞土,並嗤笑如今眾人所豔羨的事物;
For if this love seizes you, you will see the mire and the filth, and you will laugh to scorn the things now admired;
30:200
for it is not possible that a woman adorned with spiritual good deeds should crave this laughter.
30:201
Casting away, therefore, all these things—which even women of the marketplace, and dancing-girls and flute-girls possess with much ambition—put on love of wisdom, hospitality, the protection of the saints, compunction of heart, unceasing prayers.
30:202
These are better than garments of gold, these more venerable than gems and necklaces; these both make you well-approved among men and bring you a great reward from God.
30:203
這是教會的妝飾,那另一種則是戲園的妝飾;
This is the adornment of the Church, that other the adornment of the theaters;
30:204
這一種配得諸天,那另一種只配馬匹與騾子;
this is worthy of the heavens, that other of horses and mules;
30:205
that other is put even about dead bodies, but this shines only in a good soul, in which Christ dwells.
30:206
Let us therefore acquire this adornment, that we too may be held in reverence everywhere, and may be well-pleasing to Christ unto the ages of ages.
