So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
14:2
因為你們若順著肉體活著,必要死亡;
For if you live according to the flesh, you are about to die;
14:3
but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you shall live.
14:4
Having shown how great is the prize of the spiritual life — that it makes Christ to dwell within us, that it quickens our mortal bodies, that it gives wings toward heaven, and that it renders the path of virtue easier — he now of necessity brings in his exhortation, saying:
14:5
Therefore we are not debtors to live according to the flesh.
14:6
然而他並非如此措辭,卻用了遠更帶有責備、更為有力的說法;
Yet he did not put it thus, but spoke in a way far more reproving and forcible;
14:7
for by saying, 'We are not debtors to the flesh,' this is what he made plain.
14:8
他處處都在確立這一點,指明神向我們所行的事並非出於償還,而是出於純然的恩典;
And everywhere he establishes this, showing that the things done by God toward us were not of debt but of naked grace;
14:9
but the things done by us thereafter are no longer of free bounty, but of debt.
14:10
「你們是重價買來的,不要作人的奴僕」——他所暗示的正是此事;
'You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men' — this is what he intimates;
14:11
and when he writes, 'You are not your own,' he declares this very thing.
14:12
And elsewhere again he reminds them of these same matters, speaking thus: that 'if one died for all, then all died;'
14:13
'and he died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves.'
14:14
This indeed he here also establishes, saying:
14:15
Then, since he had said, 'We are not debtors to the flesh,' lest you should again take what is said as referring to the nature of the flesh, he did not keep silent, but added:
14:16
'to live according to the flesh.' For indeed we owe it much: to feed it, to cherish it, to give it rest, to tend it when sick, to clothe it, and to render it countless other services.
14:17
Therefore, lest you suppose that he abolishes this ministration when he says, 'We are not debtors to the flesh,' he interprets it, saying:
14:18
'For it is that zeal which I abolish,' he says, 'the zeal that leads to sin; whereas the things that tend to its care I wish to be done.'
14:19
因為他說了不要為肉體安排,卻沒有緘默,反而補上「去放縱私慾」;
For having said not to make provision for the flesh, he did not keep silent, but added, 'unto its lusts;'
14:20
他在此處也正是教導這一點,說「當然要照顧它」;
which he indeed here also teaches, saying that 'Let it be cared for;'
14:21
因為我們欠它這一份;
for we owe it this;
14:22
然而我們卻不要順著肉體活著;
yet let us not live according to the flesh;
14:23
that is, Let us not make it mistress of our life.
14:24
For it must follow, not lead, nor itself regulate our life, but receive the laws of the Spirit.
14:25
Having therefore defined this, and established that we are debtors to the Spirit, he then, showing for what benefits we are debtors, mentions not the things past — over which one may most of all be astonished at his understanding — but the things to come.
14:26
其實那些過去的事也已足夠了;
And yet those past things too were sufficient;
14:27
but nevertheless he does not set them down now, nor speak of those unspeakable benefits, but of the things to come.
14:28
For the benefit once given is not wont to draw on the many as the one that is looked for and yet to come.
14:29
And having added this, he first alarms them by the grievous things and the evils that come of living according to the flesh, speaking thus:
14:30
但你們若順著肉體活著,必要死亡;
But if you live according to the flesh, you are about to die;
14:31
intimating to us that death, the immortal one — the chastisement and punishment in Gehenna.
14:32
更確切地說,人若仔細查究這事,這樣的人甚至在今生就已經死了;
Or rather, if one should examine this carefully, such a man has died even in this present life;
14:33
which indeed we made clear to you in the discourse before this one.
14:34
But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you shall live.
14:35
你看見他所論的不是身體的本性,而是屬肉體的行為麼?因為他並沒有說「你們若靠著聖靈治死身體的本性,就必活著」,乃是說「行為」;
You see that he is not discoursing about the nature of the body, but about fleshly deeds? For he did not say, 'But if by the Spirit you put to death the nature of the body, you shall live,' but 'the deeds;'
14:36
而且並非所有的行為,乃是那些邪惡的行為;
and not even all these, but the wicked ones;
14:37
這在下文中是顯而易見的;
and this is plain in what follows;
14:38
for 'if you do this,' he says, 'you shall live.'
14:39
And how could this come about, if his discourse were about all the deeds? For seeing, and hearing, and speaking, and walking are deeds of the body, and if we were to put them to death, we should be so far from living that we should even pay the penalty for murder.
14:40
What deeds then does he say we are to put to death? Those that are moved toward wickedness, that make their way toward vice, which cannot even be put to death in any other way than through the Spirit.
14:41
因為若將其他的行為殺死,就是毀滅自己,這是不合法的;
For to slay the other deeds is to destroy oneself, which is not lawful;
14:42
but these are slain through the Spirit alone.
14:43
For if this be present, all the waves are stilled, and the passions crouch down, and nothing rises up against us.
14:44
Do you see how, from the things to come — as I said before — he urges us on, and shows us to be debtors not from the things already done alone? For this is not the only achievement of the Spirit, he says, that it has released us from our past sins, but also that it renders us unconquerable in respect of the things to come, and deems us worthy of the immortal life.
14:45
Then, setting down yet another reward, he added:
14:46
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.
14:47
Greater is the crown than the former.
14:48
Wherefore he did not simply say, 'For as many as live by the Spirit of God,' but 'As many as are led by the Spirit of God,' showing that he wills it so to be lord of our life as the pilot of the ship and the charioteer of the team of horses.
14:49
And not the body only, but the very soul itself he subjects to such reins.
14:50
For he does not wish even that to have supreme authority, but he has placed even its power under the might of the Spirit.
14:51
For lest, having trusted in the gift of the laver, they should neglect the manner of life that follows, he says that even if you receive baptism, but are not thereafter led by the Spirit, you have lost the dignity given and the pre-eminence of the adoption.
14:52
因這緣故他不說「凡領受了聖靈的」,乃說「凡被神的靈引導的」;
For this cause he did not say, 'As many as received the Spirit,' but 'As many as are led by the Spirit of God;'
14:53
that is, As many as throughout their whole life so order their conduct, these are the sons of God.
14:54
Then, since this dignity had been given to the Jews also —
14:55
'You are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High;'
14:56
and again, 'I have begotten sons and raised them up;'
14:57
and, 'Israel is my firstborn;'
14:58
and Paul too says, 'Whose is the adoption;'
14:59
he then establishes how great is the difference between that honor and this.
14:60
For even if the names are the same, he says, yet the things are not the same.
14:61
他為這些事提供了清楚的證明,從那些行為端正的人、從所賜的恩、以及從將要來的事,引入這番比較;
And he furnishes a clear demonstration of these things, bringing in the comparison both from those who act rightly, and from the things given, and from the things that are to come;
14:62
and first he shows what were the things given to those men.
14:63
那麼這些是甚麼呢?是奴僕的靈;
What then were these? A spirit of bondage;
14:64
For you did not receive a spirit of bondage again unto fear.
14:65
Then, forbearing to name that which is contrasted with bondage, that is, a spirit of freedom, he set down what is far greater, the spirit of adoption, through which that other also was implied, saying:
14:66
But you received a spirit of adoption.
14:67
But what the spirit of bondage may be is unclear.
14:68
所以必須把它講得更清楚些;
It is therefore necessary to make it clearer;
14:69
for what is said is not only obscure, but exceedingly perplexing.
14:70
因為猶太人的百姓並沒有領受聖靈;
For the people of the Jews did not receive a Spirit;
14:71
那麼他在此處是甚麼意思呢?他這樣稱呼那些經文,是因它們原是屬靈的——正如他也稱律法為屬靈的,以及那從磐石流出的水和嗎哪;
what then does he here mean? He so called the Scriptures, since they were spiritual — just as also he calls the Law spiritual, and the water from the rock, and the manna;
14:72
For, he says, they all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.
14:73
And the rock too he names in this way, saying:
14:74
And they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them.
14:75
For since all the things that were accomplished were beyond nature, he called them spiritual — not because those who then partook of them received the Spirit.
14:76
And how were those letters letters of bondage? Survey the whole of their polity, and then you will clearly understand this also.
14:77
For their punishments were close at their heels, and the reward followed immediately, being proportionate and given as it were like a daily ration doled out to household servants; and everywhere great fear was rife before their very eyes; and there were purifications concerning the body, and self-restraint extending even to their deeds.
14:78
But with us it is not so; rather, both the reasoning and the conscience are cleansed.
14:79
因為他不單說「不可殺人」,而是說「連動怒也不可」;
For he does not say merely, You shall not kill, but, Neither shall you be angry;
14:80
也不單說「不可姦淫」,而是說「連放縱情慾地觀看也不可」;
nor, You shall not commit adultery, but, Neither shall you look with unbridled desire;
14:81
so that no longer through fear of present punishment, but through longing toward Him, one may both abide in the habit of virtue and accomplish all other good works.
14:82
Nor does He promise a land flowing with milk and honey, but makes us joint-heirs with the Only-begotten, drawing us away in every respect from present things, and promising to give us above all those things which it befits those who have become sons of God to receive:
14:83
nothing perceptible to the senses nor bodily, but all things spiritual.
14:84
所以那些古人縱然被稱為兒子,卻仍是如同奴僕;
So that even if those of old were called sons, yet it was as slaves;
14:85
而我們既已成為自由的人,領受了兒子的名分,並且盼望天上的基業;
but we, having become free, received the adoption and await heaven;
14:86
祂對他們是藉著別人說話,對我們卻是親自說話;
and to them He spoke through others, but to us through Himself;
14:87
他們行一切事是被刑罰的懼怕所驅使,屬靈的人卻是出於愛慕與渴望;
and they did everything led on by fear of punishment, but the spiritual do so out of desire and longing;
14:88
and they show this by even going beyond the commandments.
14:89
那些人如同雇工,又忘恩負義,總是不住地發怨言;
They, like hirelings and ingrates, never at any rate ceased from murmuring;
14:90
這些人卻是為要討父的喜悅;
but these act toward the pleasing of the Father;
14:91
他們蒙恩待時反倒褻瀆;
and they, when treated with kindness, blasphemed;
14:92
but we give thanks even in the midst of dangers.
14:93
And if it be necessary that sinners be punished, here too the difference is great.
14:94
For not as those of old, being stoned and burned and mutilated by the priests, are we too brought back to correction; rather it suffices to be cast out from the paternal table and to become for a stated number of days deprived of the sight of it.
14:95
在猶太人身上,兒子的名分不過是言語上的尊榮;
And in the case of the Jews the adoption was an honour of word only;
14:96
but here a reality also followed — the cleansing through baptism, the gift of the Spirit, the supply of the other good things.
14:97
關於這些事,還可以舉出更多別的例證,來顯明我們所享的尊貴與他們的卑微;
And of these matters one could mention many others which display the nobility that is among us and the meanness of theirs;
14:98
all of which he intimated through the Spirit, the fear, and the adoption; and he furnishes yet another proof that we possess the Spirit of adoption.
14:99
What then is this? It is that in which we cry, Abba, Father.
14:100
And how great this is, the initiated know, who are rightly enjoined at the mystical prayer to utter this word first of all.
14:101
What then? Did not those of old also call God Father? he asks. Do you not hear Moses saying:
14:102
You have forsaken God who begot you? Do you not hear Malachi reproaching and saying that one God created us, and one is the Father of us all? But even if these things and more than these have been said, nowhere do we find them calling God by this word, nor praying in this manner.
14:103
But we all — priests and laymen, rulers and ruled — have been commanded to pray in this way.
14:104
And this is the first utterance we send forth, after those wondrous birth-pangs and the strange and marvellous law of that childbearing.
14:105
另有一層意思:古人縱然有時也如此稱呼祂,卻是出於他們自己的心思;
In another way too: even if those of old did at times call Him so, yet it was from their own mind;
14:106
but those who are in grace do so moved by a spiritual working.
14:107
因為正如有智慧的靈,藉此那本無智慧的人得了智慧,這從他們的教訓上顯明出來;
For just as there is a spirit of wisdom, by which the unwise became wise, and this is shown by their teaching;
14:108
也有能力的靈,藉此那些軟弱的人叫死人復活、趕逐鬼魔;又有醫病恩賜的靈、說預言的靈、說方言的靈;
and there is a spirit of power, by which the weak raised the dead and drove out demons; and a spirit of the gift of healings, and a spirit of prophecy, and a spirit of tongues;
14:109
so too there is a spirit of adoption.
14:110
並且正如我們知道那說預言的靈,凡擁有它的人便能預言將來的事,不是憑自己的心思說話,乃是被恩典所感動;
And just as we know the spirit of prophecy, from which he who has it foretells things to come, not speaking from his own mind but moved by grace;
14:111
so indeed also the spirit of adoption, from which he who has received it calls God Father, moved by the Spirit.
14:112
那要顯明真實嫡親之分的,甚至用了希伯來人的言語;
And he who wished to show genuineness employed even the tongue of the Hebrews;
14:113
for he did not say merely, Father, but, Abba, Father, which is especially the word of genuine children to a father.
14:114
Having therefore spoken of the difference derived from their polity, from the grace given, and from freedom, he adds yet another proof of the superiority pertaining to this adoption.
14:115
What then is this? The Spirit itself, he says, bears witness together with our spirit that we are children of God.
14:116
他說,我所憑據的不單是那話語本身,也是那話語所由生的根源;
For I rely, he says, not on the utterance alone, but also on the cause from which the utterance is born;
14:117
for it is at the Spirit's prompting that we say these things.
14:118
Which elsewhere, declaring it more plainly, he said: God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying:
14:119
But what is it, the Spirit bears witness together with our spirit? The Paraclete, he says, together with the gift given to us.
14:120
因為這話語不單是出於那恩賜,也是出於那賜下恩賜的保惠師;
For the utterance is not of the gift alone, but also of the Paraclete who gave the gift;
14:121
for it was He Himself who taught us through the gift to speak in this way.
14:122
既然聖靈作見證,還能有甚麼疑惑呢?因為若是人、或天使、或天使長、或別的甚麼這樣的能者作此應許,有些人或許還可能存疑;
And when the Spirit bears witness, what doubt any longer remains? For if a man, or an angel, or an archangel, or some other such power were promising this, some might reasonably doubt;
14:123
but when the supreme Essence, which both bestowed this and bears witness to us through the very words in which He bade us pray, does so, who could any longer dispute concerning our worthiness? For if a king appointed someone and proclaimed the honour before all, none of his subjects would dare to contradict it.
14:124
And if children, he says, then heirs also.
14:125
Do you see how little by little he heightens the gift? For since it is possible both to be children and yet not to become heirs (for not all children are heirs), he adds this also, that we are heirs also.
14:126
But the Jews, besides not having such an adoption, were also cast out from the inheritance.
14:127
For He will miserably destroy those wretches, and the vineyard
14:128
He will lease out to other husbandmen.
14:129
Καὶ πρὸ .
在這以前他也說過:「從東從西,將有許多人來,在天國裡與亞伯拉罕一同坐席;
And before this too He said that Many shall come from east and west, and shall recline with Abraham;
14:130
but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out.
14:131
But he does not stop even here; rather, he sets down something greater than this too.
14:132
這是甚麼呢?就是我們作神的後嗣;
What then is this? That we are heirs of God;
14:133
and, what is yet more, that we are not simply heirs, but also joint-heirs with Christ.
14:134
Do you see how earnestly he contends to bring us near to the Master? For since not all children are heirs, he shows that we are both children and heirs.
14:135
And since not all heirs are heirs of great things, he shows that we have this too, being heirs of God.
14:136
Again, since it happens that one may be an heir of God, yet not altogether a joint-heir with the Only-begotten, he shows that we have this also.
14:137
For having compressed the painful matters — when he was saying what those who live according to the flesh shall suffer, namely, that they are about to die — since he had touched upon the more cheerful things, he leads out the discourse into great spaciousness, expanding it with the recompense of the rewards, and showing the gifts to be varied and great.
14:138
For if even to be a child was unspeakable grace, consider how great is the added word, an heir also.
14:139
And if this be great, much more so is the word, joint-heir.
14:140
Then, showing that the gift is not of grace alone, and at the same time making what has been said trustworthy, he added:
14:141
If indeed we suffer together, that we may also be glorified together.
14:142
For if, he says, we have shared with Him in sufferings, much more shall this be so in good things.
14:143
For He who bestowed such great benefits on those who had achieved nothing, when He sees them also toiling and enduring so many things, how shall He not much rather reward them? (4)
14:144
他既已表明這事乃是一種回報,好使所說的話值得相信、無人生疑,接著又表明它同時具有恩典的能力;
Having therefore shown that the matter is a recompense, so that what is said may be worthy of belief and no one may doubt it, he goes on to show that it also possesses the power of grace;
14:145
一方面,是要使所說的話連在多疑之人中也能被相信,並使領受的人不至羞愧,好像總是白白得救一般;
the one, so that even among the doubtful the things said may be believed, and that those who receive may not be ashamed, as though always being saved by a free gift;
14:146
the other, so that you may learn that God, by His recompenses, surpasses the toils.
14:147
他確實藉著說「我們若一同受苦,也必一同得榮耀」,把前一點表明了出來;
And indeed the one he made clear by saying, 'If so be that we suffer together, that we may also be glorified together;'
14:148
and the other, by adding and further stating that 'The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.'
14:149
For in the former passages he requires of the spiritual man the correction of his ways, where he said:
14:150
「你們不是欠肉體的債,去順從肉體活著」;
'You are not debtors to live according to the flesh;'
14:151
意思是,這樣的人應當勝過情慾、勝過忿怒、勝過錢財、勝過虛榮、勝過嫉妒;
that is, that such a man should get the better of lust, of anger, of money, of vainglory, of envy;
14:152
but here, since he had reminded him of the whole gift already given and of that which is to come, and had lifted him up and exalted him with hopes, and set him near to Christ, and declared him a joint-heir of the Only-begotten, he then confidently leads him out even against dangers.
14:153
For it is not the same thing to get the better of the passions within us, and to endure those trials—the scourgings, the famine, the plunderings, the bonds, the chains, the being led away.
14:154
For these things require a much more noble and vigorous soul.
14:155
And see how at once he both restrains and lifts up the spirit of those who strive.
14:156
For when he shows that the prizes are greater than the toils, he both exhorts more strongly, and does not allow them to be high-minded, seeing that they are outdone by the recompense of the crowns.
14:157
For 'the momentary lightness of our affliction works out for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory.'
14:158
因為在那裡他的話是對更有修養的人說的;
For his discourse there was addressed to more philosophic minds;
14:159
but here he does not allow these things to be light, yet he comforts them by the recompense of the things to come, saying:
14:160
'For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy.'
14:161
And he did not say, 'compared with the rest to come,' but what was far greater, 'compared with the glory that is to come.'
14:162
因為凡有安息之處,未必也就有榮耀;
For where there is rest, there is not altogether also glory;
14:163
but where there is glory, there is altogether also rest.
14:164
Then, since he had called it 'to come,' he shows it to be already in existence.
14:165
因為他沒有說「比起將要成就的榮耀」,而是說「比起將要顯現的榮耀」,好像它如今已經存在,只是隱藏著;
For he did not say, 'compared with the glory that is to be,' but 'compared with the glory that is to be revealed,' as being even now in existence, yet hidden;
14:166
which also elsewhere he said more plainly, that 'Our life is hidden with Christ in God.'
14:167
所以你當為它壯膽;
Be therefore of good courage concerning it;
14:168
for it is already prepared, awaiting your toils.
14:169
但你若因它尚屬將來而憂愁,那麼這事本身倒該使你歡喜;
But if its being still to come grieves you, let this very thing rather gladden you;
14:170
for it is by reason of its being something great and unutterable, and surpassing the present condition, that it has been stored up there.
14:171
For he did not simply say, 'The sufferings of the present time,' but so as to show that that glory prevails not in quality only, but also in quantity.
14:172
因為這些苦難,無論是何等的苦難,都是分派給今生的;
For these sufferings, whatever they may be, are allotted to the present life;
14:173
but the good things to come are extended alongside the immortal ages.
14:174
既然他無法將這些事逐一詳述給我們,也無法用言語表達出來,他便以我們中間看為最可羨慕的事物——榮耀——來稱呼它們;
Since he could not tell us these things in detail, nor set them forth in words, he named them from that which seems most desirable among us—glory;
14:175
for this seems to be the summit and the chief point of good things.
14:176
他又以另一種方式高舉聽者,並從受造之物入手,使他的論述更加宏大,藉著即將要說的話確立兩件事:既使人輕看今世之物,又使人渴慕將來之物;
And uplifting the hearer in yet another way, he swells his discourse from the creation also, establishing two things by what is about to be said: both a contempt for present things and a longing for things to come;
14:177
and, a third besides these—or rather the first—to show how earnestly desired by God is the race of men, and in how great honor He holds our nature.
14:178
And along with these, all the dogmas of the philosophers, which they had composed concerning this world, like a spider's web or children's playthings, he overthrows by this one dogma.
14:179
But that these things may become clearer, let us give ear to the apostolic saying itself.
14:180
'For the earnest expectation of the creation,' he says, 'waits for the revelation of the sons of God.'
14:181
'For the creation was subjected to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of Him who subjected it, in hope.'
14:182
Now what he says is of this kind:
14:183
這受造之物正在極大的產難中,等候並盼望我們方才所說的那些美善之事;
This creation is in great travail, awaiting and expecting those good things which we have just now spoken of;
14:184
for 'earnest expectation' is intense expectation.
14:185
並且,為使論述更加生動,他將這整個世界擬人化;
And so that the discourse might become more vivid, he personifies this whole world;
14:186
眾先知也是這樣行,引入拍手的江河、跳躍的岡陵、踴躍的山嶺;
which the prophets also do, bringing in rivers clapping with their hands, and hills leaping, and the mountains skipping;
14:187
not that we should think these things to be endowed with soul, nor that we should ascribe any reasoning to them, but that we might learn the exceeding greatness of the good things, as reaching even to things without sense.
14:188
And this very thing they do often in the case of sorrowful matters too, bringing in the vine lamenting, and the wine and the mountains and the panels of the temple wailing, so that from these too again we may conceive the exceeding greatness of the evils.
14:189
使徒效法他們,在此將受造之物擬人化,說它嘆息勞苦、正在產難之中;
And the Apostle, imitating these, here personifies the creation, and says that it groans and travails;
14:190
not because he heard any groaning borne up from earth and heaven, but that he might display the exceeding greatness of the good things to come, and the longing for deliverance from the evils that hold it fast.
14:191
'For the creation was subjected to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of Him who subjected it.'
14:192
What is 'the creation was subjected to vanity'? It became corruptible.
14:193
For whose sake and why? For your sake, O man.
14:194
For since you received a body mortal and subject to suffering, the earth also received a curse, and brought forth thorns and thistles.
14:195
And that the heaven too, growing old together with the earth, shall afterwards be changed into a better lot, hear the Prophet saying:
14:196
'In the beginning You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands.'
14:197
'They shall perish, but You remain; and they all shall grow old like a garment, and as a mantle You shall roll them up, and they shall be changed.'
14:198
And Isaiah too, making these things plain, said:
14:199
'Look up to the heaven above, and to the earth beneath, for the heaven was made firm like smoke, and the earth shall grow old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall perish in like manner as these.'
14:200
Have you seen how the creation was in bondage to vanity, and how it is set free from corruption? For the one says:
14:201
「你要將天地捲起來,像一件外衣,天地就都改變了」;
'As a garment You shall roll them up, and they shall be changed;'
14:202
以賽亞則說:「其上的居民也要如此滅沒」;
and Isaiah says, 'And they that dwell therein shall perish in like manner as these;'
14:203
他所說的並非全然的毀滅;
he does not mean a complete destruction, he says;
14:204
for neither shall they that dwell therein—that is, mankind—undergo such a destruction, but a temporary one, and through it they shall be transferred to incorruption, just as also the creation.
14:205
這一切他都藉著說「如同這些一樣」而暗示出來;
All which he intimated by saying, 'in like manner as these';
14:206
保羅接下去也正是說這事;
which very thing Paul also, going on, says;
14:207
he discourses concerning its bondage, and shows for what reason it became such, and lays the cause upon us.
14:208
那麼,它為著別人的緣故承受這些事,豈是受了冤屈嗎?斷乎不是;
What then? Was it wronged in suffering these things for another's sake? By no means;
14:209
how then could that which came into being for my sake be wronged when it suffers these things for my correction? And besides, one ought not even to raise the question of just and unjust in the case of things without soul and without sense.
14:210
But Paul, since he had personified it, uses none of these arguments which I have mentioned, but another kind of reasoning, being eager out of his abundance to comfort the hearer.
14:211
那麼,這是何種論述呢?他說:你怎麼說呢?它豈是為了你的緣故受了苦、成了必朽壞的嗎?然而它絲毫沒有受屈;
Of what kind then is this? What do you say? he says; has it suffered ill for your sake and become corruptible? Yet it has been in no way wronged;
14:212
For it too shall be incorruptible again for your sake.
14:213
For this is the meaning of the words, 'In hope.'
14:214
But when he says, 'It was not willingly subjected,' he does not say this in order to show that it possessed a will of its own, but that you may learn that the whole came to pass through the providence of Christ, and that this was no achievement of creation itself.
14:215
Tell me, then, and in what hope? 'Because the creation itself also shall be delivered.'
14:216
What is the meaning of 'itself also'? Not you alone, but even that which is inferior to you, and which partakes neither of reason nor of sense—this too shall share with you in the good things.
14:217
'For it shall be set free,' he says, 'from the bondage of corruption.'
14:218
That is, it shall no longer be corruptible, but shall follow after the comeliness of your body.
14:219
因為正如當你成為必朽壞的時候,它也隨之成為必朽壞的;
For just as, when you became corruptible, it too became corruptible;
14:220
so, when you are established in incorruption, it too shall follow and attend upon you once more.
14:221
And it is this very thing that he shows when he goes on to add:
14:222
「得享神兒女榮耀的自由」;
'Into the liberty of the glory of the children of God';
14:223
that is, on account of their liberty.
14:224
For just as a nurse who rears a royal child, when that child has come into his father's dominion, herself also shares in the enjoyment of the good things, so likewise, he says, is it with the creation.
14:225
Do you see man everywhere set in the foremost place, and all things coming into being for his sake? Do you see how he comforts the one who is struggling, and displays the unspeakable lovingkindness of God toward man? For why, he says, do you grieve over your trials? You suffer for your own sake, but the creation suffers for yours.
14:226
And he not only comforts, but also shows that what he says is worthy of belief.
14:227
For if the creation, which comes to be entirely for your sake, cherishes hope, much more shall you, for whose sake the creation is about to enjoy all those good things.
14:228
人間也是如此:當兒子將要顯出尊貴時,人就把僕人也穿上更華美的衣袍,以增添那孩子的榮耀;
Even so among men, when a son is about to appear in dignity, they clothe even the servants in more splendid apparel, to add to the glory of the boy;
14:229
so likewise God invests the creation with incorruption, unto the liberty of the glory of the children.
14:230
'For we know that the whole creation groans together and travails in pain together until now.'
14:231
Do you see how he puts the hearer to shame, all but saying:
14:232
Do not become worse than the creation, and cling fondly to present things. For not only must you not hold fast to them, but you must even groan over the delay of your departure from here.
14:233
For if the creation does this, much more is it fitting that you, who have been honored with reason, should exhibit the same.
14:234
然而,這還不足以構成使人羞愧的重大理由;
But this is not yet a great matter to induce shame;
14:235
「不但如此,就是我們這有聖靈初結果子的,也是自己心裡歎息」;
'And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves';
14:236
that is, having already tasted of the things to come.
14:237
For even if a man be exceedingly hard as stone, the things already given are enough both to rouse him up, and to draw him away from present things, and to make him wing his way toward the things to come, in a twofold manner: both because the gifts bestowed are great, and because such great and so many things are but firstfruits.
14:238
For if the firstfruits are so great that through them we are both delivered from sins, and attain to righteousness and sanctification, and if those who lived at that time even cast out demons and raised the dead by a shadow and by garments—
14:239
and if the creation, which is deprived of mind and reason, and knows none of these things, yet groans—
14:240
接著,為了不給異端留下把柄,也免得顯出貶低現今之事,他說:「我們歎息」,並不是控訴現今的事,乃是渴慕那更大的;
Then, lest he give a handhold to the heretics, and seem to disparage present things, he says: 'We groan,' not accusing the present things, but longing for the greater;
14:241
for this is what he made plain when he said:
14:242
What do you mean, tell me? Up and down you were continually turning, and crying aloud, saying that 'We are already become sons,' and now you place this good thing in the realm of hope, writing that one must wait for it? Correcting this, therefore, by what he adds, he says:
14:243
that is, the perfected glory.
14:244
因為如今我們的境況直到最後一口氣息,仍處於不確定之中;
For now our affairs stand in uncertainty until the last breath;
14:245
for many who were sons have become dogs and captives.
14:246
But if we end our life with good hope, then the gift is immovable, and clearer and greater, no longer fearing the change wrought by death and sin.
14:247
Then, therefore, shall the grace be secure, when both our body is delivered from death, and from its ten thousand sufferings.
14:248
For this is redemption—not simply a ransoming, but such that one should never again return to the former captivity.
14:249
因為免得你屢屢聽見「榮耀」卻毫無明確的認識而感到困惑,他就將將來之事略微揭開,為你更新你的身體,並使整個受造之物也與它一同得著更新;
For that you may not be perplexed, hearing 'glory' continually yet knowing nothing clearly, he opens up in part the things to come, changing your body for you, and changing along with it the whole creation as well;
14:250
which he also declared more plainly elsewhere when he said:
14:251
'Who shall transform the body of our humiliation, that it may be conformed to the body of His glory.'
14:252
And again, writing in another place, he said:
14:253
'But when this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the word that is written:'
14:254
'Death is swallowed up in victory.'
14:255
And showing that together with the corruption of the body the whole order of the affairs of this life shall also pass away, he wrote again in yet another place:
14:256
'For the fashion of this world passes away.'
14:257
'For we were saved by hope,' he says.
14:258
For since he had dwelt upon the promise of things to come, this too seemed to grieve the weaker hearer—that the good things were in the realm of hope. He had first established that they are more certain than present and visible things, and had discoursed at length concerning the gifts already bestowed, and had shown that we have received even a firstfruits of those good things; and so, that we might not seek everything here and betray our nobility which comes from faith, he says:
14:259
And what he means is this:
14:260
We must not seek everything here, but must also hope.
14:261
For this is the only gift we brought to God—to believe Him when He promised the things to come; and by this way alone were we saved.
14:262
If, therefore, we lose this, we have lost the whole of our contribution.
14:263
For I ask you, he says: were you not liable to ten thousand evils? were you not in despair? were you not subject to condemnation? were not all men powerless to work your salvation? What, then, saved you? To have hoped in God alone, and to have believed Him concerning the things He promised and gave; and you had nothing further to contribute.
14:264
If, then, this saved you, hold it fast now also.
14:265
For she who bestowed on you such great good things, it is plain, will not deceive you concerning the things to come either.
14:266
For where, having taken you when you were dead and lost and captive and an enemy, she made you a friend and a son and a freeman and righteous and a joint-heir, and bestowed on you such things as no one ever even expected—
14:267
how, after such great munificence and adoption into His household, should He not receive you in what follows? Do not, then, say to me:
14:268
Again hopes, again expectations, again faith.
14:269
For thus were you saved from the beginning, and this dowry alone did you bring to the Bridegroom.
14:270
Hold it fast, therefore, and keep it.
14:271
For if you demand everything here, you have destroyed your achievement, through which you became illustrious.
14:272
'But hope that is seen is not hope;'
14:273
'for what a man sees, why does he yet hope for? But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.'
14:274
If you are going to seek everything here, what need is there of hope? What, then, is hope? To have confidence in the things to come.
14:275
因為神自己既從祂自己的府庫中將一切美善完全賜下,祂向你所求的又有什麼是大的呢?祂向你所求的只有一件—就是指望—好叫你自己也能為你的救恩有所貢獻;
For what great thing does God ask of you, when He Himself bestows all the good things entirely from His own store? One thing only He asks of you—hope—that you too may have something to contribute toward your own salvation;
14:276
which he also intimated when he went on to add:
14:277
'But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.'
14:278
因為正如神為那勞苦、受艱難、千方百計辛勤操作的人加冠,照樣祂也為那存指望的人加冠;
For just as He crowns the one who labors and suffers hardship and toils in a thousand ways, so also does God crown the one who hopes;
14:279
for the very name of 'patience' is a name of sweat and of much endurance.
14:280
But nevertheless He has bestowed this too as a favor upon the one who hopes, that He might comfort the soul that has grown weary.
14:281
Then, showing that toward this light burden we enjoy much help, he adds:
14:282
In the same way also the Spirit helps our weaknesses.
14:283
忍耐是屬於你自己的那一分;
Endurance becomes your own contribution;
14:284
but the part supplied by the Spirit is that which anoints you unto hope and, through that hope again, lightens your labours.
14:285
Then, that you may learn that this grace stands by us not only in our labours and dangers, but also cooperates with us in the things that seem to be the easiest, and everywhere brings in its own assistance, he goes on to say:
14:286
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought.
14:287
He said these things to make manifest the great providence of the Spirit toward us, and to teach them not to suppose those things to be altogether profitable which appear so to human reasonings.
14:288
For since it was likely that they, being scourged, driven about, and suffering countless dreadful things, would seek relief and would think it profitable for them to ask this grace from God, he says:
14:289
Do not suppose that the very things which seem to you to be profitable are indeed such.
14:290
因為連在這件事上,我們也需要神的幫助;
For in this very matter we stand in need of God's help;
14:291
so weak is man, and of himself nothing.
14:292
For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought.
14:293
For that the disciple might no longer be ashamed of his ignorance, he showed that the teachers also were in the same case.
14:294
For he did not say, You do not know, but, We do not know.
14:295
And that he was not speaking these things merely out of modesty, he made plain through other examples.
14:296
因為他在禱告中不住地祈求得見羅馬,然而當他祈求的時候卻未能如願;
For unceasingly in his prayers he begged to see Rome, and yet not when he begged did he then obtain it;
14:297
至於那賜給他肉體中的一根刺,就是他所遭遇的危險,他也屢次懇求,卻全然沒有蒙允准;
and concerning the thorn given him in the flesh—that is, concerning his dangers—he besought many times, and was wholly unsuccessful;
14:298
and Moses too in the Old Testament, praying to see Palestine; and Jeremiah interceding for the Jews; and Abraham pleading for the Sodomites.
14:299
But the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.
14:300
What is here said is obscure, because many of the miracles that then took place have now ceased.
14:301
Therefore it is necessary to teach you the condition of things at that time, and thus the discourse will henceforth be clearer.
14:302
那麼當時的情形是怎樣的呢?神賜給當時凡受洗的人各樣的恩賜,這些恩賜也被稱為「靈」;
What then was the condition at that time? God gave to all who were then baptized various gifts, which indeed were also called spirits;
14:303
For, it says, the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
14:304
有人得了說預言的恩賜,就預告將來的事;
And one had the gift of prophecy, and foretold things to come;
14:305
有人得了智慧的恩賜,就教導眾人;
another the gift of wisdom, and taught the many;
14:306
有人得了醫病的恩賜,就醫治患病的人;
another the gift of healings, and cured the sick;
14:307
有人得了行異能的恩賜,就使死人復活;
another the gift of powers, and raised the dead;
14:308
another the gift of tongues, and spoke in various languages.
14:309
And besides all these there was also the gift of prayer, which too was called a spirit, and which prayed.
14:310
For since, being ignorant of many things that are profitable to us, we ask for things that are not profitable, the gift of prayer came upon some one of those then living, and he himself stood asking on behalf of all for that which was of common profit to the whole Church, and instructed the others.
14:311
So here he calls 'Spirit' both this kind of gift, and the soul that receives the gift and makes intercession to God and groans.
14:312
For he who has been counted worthy of such grace, standing with much compunction, falling down before God with many groanings according to the mind, asks the things profitable for all.
14:313
Of which even now the deacon is a symbol, when he offers up the prayers on behalf of the people.
14:314
This, then, is what Paul was making plain when he said:
14:315
The Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.
14:316
Do you see that the discourse is not about the Paraclete, but about the spiritual heart? For if this were not so, he ought to have said:
14:317
But that you may learn that the discourse is about a spiritual man who has the gift of prayer, he added:
14:318
And he who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit;
14:319
就是說,那屬靈之人的意思;
that is, of the spiritual man;
14:320
because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.
14:321
他說,這並不是要教導神,好像神無知似的,乃是為要叫我們學會禱告那當求的事,並向神求那在祂看為美善的事;
For he does not, he says, teach God as though He were ignorant, but this takes place in order that we may learn to pray for those things which we ought, and to ask from God the things that seem good to Him;
14:322
for this is the meaning of 'according to God.'
14:323
如此,這事的發生既是為安慰那些前來的人,也是為施行最美好的教導;
So that this took place both for the comfort of those who came, and for the best instruction;
14:324
for He who supplied both the gifts and gave the countless good things was the Paraclete.
14:325
For all these things, he says, one and the same Spirit works.
14:326
This takes place for the sake of instruction, and that the love of the Spirit may be shown, in that He condescends to such a degree.
14:327
Hence also it came about that the one who prayed was heard, because the prayer was made according to God.
14:328
Do you see by how many means He instructs them in the love toward them and the honour bestowed upon them? (Section 8)
14:329
神為我們的緣故有甚麼未曾行的呢?祂為我們的緣故使世界成為必朽壞的,也要為我們的緣故使它成為不朽壞的;
For what has God not done for our sake? He made the world corruptible for our sake, and He will make it incorruptible for our sake;
14:330
He permitted the prophets to be ill-treated for our sake, He sent them into captivity for our sake, He suffered them to be cast into the furnace for our sake, to endure countless evils.
14:331
祂為我們的緣故立他們作先知,為我們的緣故立他們作使徒;
And He made them prophets for our sake, and apostles for our sake;
14:332
He gave up the Only-begotten for our sake, He punishes the devil for our sake.
14:333
For it says, The reproaches of them that reproached you fell upon me.
14:334
然而,儘管我們在如此諸多恩惠之後仍然離棄祂,祂卻不撇下我們,反倒再次勸勉我們,並預備別人為我們代求,好使祂能施恩給我們;
But nevertheless, though after so much we withdraw from Him, He does not forsake us, but even entreats us again, and prepares others to entreat on our behalf, that He may show us grace;
14:335
which is exactly what happened in the case of Moses.
14:336
Let me alone, and I will blot them out;
14:337
為要激動他為那些人懇切代求;
that He might move him to supplication on their behalf;
14:338
for this reason too He gave the gift of prayer.
14:339
But He did this, not that He Himself stood in need of entreaty, but that we, being simply saved, might not become the worse for it.
14:340
正是為這緣故,祂常對他們說,祂是為著大衛以及某某人的緣故才與他們和好,再次安排這事,好使那和好能披上一種樣式;
For this very reason He often says to them that He is reconciled for the sake of David and of such a one and such a one, contriving this very thing again, that some outward form may be added to the reconciliation;
14:341
and yet He would have appeared far more loving of mankind, if He had told them He forgave His anger not for the sake of such a one and such a one, but for His own sake.
14:342
But He was not so anxious for this as that the ground of the reconciliation might not become to those who are saved an occasion of slothfulness.
14:343
For this reason too He said to Jeremiah:
14:344
Do not pray for this people, for I will not hearken to you;
14:345
祂並非要叫他停止懇求(因為祂極其切望我們的得救),乃是要使那些人懼怕;
not wishing to make him cease from his petitioning (for He greatly desires our salvation), but to make those afraid;
14:346
which indeed the prophet also perceived, and did not cease from petitioning.
14:347
And that you may learn that He said these things not because He wished to turn him away, but to bring them to shame, hear what He says:
14:348
Do you not see what they themselves are doing? And when He says to the city:
14:349
Though you wash with nitre, and multiply to yourself soap, you are stained before me;
14:350
He says this not that He may cast them into despair, but that He may rouse them up unto repentance.
14:351
正如在尼尼微人的事上,祂毫無條件地宣告了那定罪的話,並沒有給他們甚麼美好的指望,反倒因此更使他們懼怕,並領他們悔改;
For just as in the case of the Ninevites, having uttered the sentence unconditionally, and not holding out good hopes, He the more terrified them and led them to repentance;
14:352
So too He acts here, both rousing those others and rendering the prophet more worthy of reverence, that in this way at least they might give ear to him.
14:353
Then, since they remained sick with an incurable disease, and were not brought to their senses even when the others had been carried away, He first exhorts them to remain there.
14:354
But when they would not endure it, and instead deserted to Egypt, this indeed He permitted; yet He asked of them that they should not, together with Egypt, desert also to impiety.
14:355
And when they would not be persuaded even of this, He sent the prophet along with them, so that they might not thereafter be utterly wrecked.
14:356
For since they had not followed Him when He called, He Himself thereafter follows after them to set them right, and to hinder them from being carried further into wickedness, just as an affectionate father does with a child that is in wretched plight in every respect, leading it about everywhere and following along beside it.
14:357
For this very reason He sent not only Jeremiah into Egypt, but also Ezekiel into Babylon.
14:358
For since they saw their own Master loving them exceedingly, they too continued to do the same.
14:359
Just as if some grateful servant should take pity on a worthless son, seeing the father grieving and beating his breast for his sake.
14:360
For what did they not suffer for their sake? They were sawn asunder, driven out, reproached, stoned, they endured countless terrible things.
14:361
And after all these things, they ran back to them again.
14:362
For Samuel too did not cease from mourning over Saul, even though he had been grievously insulted by him and had suffered irreparable wrongs.
14:363
Yet nonetheless he made no mention of any of those things.
14:364
And for the people of the Jews Jeremiah even composed written lamentations.
14:365
And when the general of the Persians offered him, with full security,
14:366
to dwell in perfect freedom wherever he wished, he preferred to a life at home the ill-treatment of his people and the misery in a foreign land.
14:367
So too Moses, forsaking the royal palace and his sojourn there, ran to share the calamities of those people.
14:368
And Daniel too remained without food for twenty-six days, straining himself with the heaviest fasting, that he might reconcile God to them.
14:369
And the three children too, while they were in the furnace and in so great a fire, offered up supplication on their behalf.
14:370
他們哀傷,絕不是為著已蒙拯救的自己;
For it was surely not on behalf of their own selves, who had been saved, that they grieved;
14:371
but since they then above all thought that they had boldness, for this reason they made entreaty on their behalf.
14:372
'With a contrite soul and a spirit of humility may we be received.'
14:373
為著這些人,約書亞也撕裂了自己的衣服;
For these Joshua too rent his garments;
14:374
為著這些人,以西結也哀哭悲嘆,因見他們被砍殺;
for these Ezekiel too lamented and bewailed, seeing them cut down;
14:375
'Let me alone, I will weep bitterly.'
14:376
And even before this, since he did not dare to ask for the complete remission of the calamities, he sought a set term, saying:
14:377
'How long, O Lord?' For the whole race of the saints is affectionate.
14:378
'Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy, bowels of mercies, kindness, humility.'
14:379
你可看見這話語的精確,以及祂何等願我們持續不斷地施憐憫嗎?因為祂沒有僅僅說「要施憐憫」,而是說「要穿上」;
Do you see the exactness of the expression, and how He wishes us to be continually merciful? For He did not say simply, 'Show mercy,' but, 'Put on';
14:380
that just as the garment is always with us, so also should mercy be.
14:381
And He did not say simply, 'Mercy,' but, 'Bowels of mercies,' that we might imitate a natural affection.
14:382
然而我們所行的卻恰恰相反;
But we do the very opposite;
14:383
and if anyone comes up asking for a single obol, we insult, we revile, we call him an impostor.
14:384
Do you not shudder, O man, do you not blush, to call one an impostor for the sake of a loaf? And even if such a one does practise imposture, for this very reason he is the more deserving of pity, that he is so pressed by hunger as to put on such a mask.
14:385
And this is an accusation against our own cruelty.
14:386
For since we cannot bear to give readily, they are compelled to devise countless contrivances, so as to outwit our inhumanity and to soften our harshness.
14:387
再者,他若是求討銀子和金子,你的疑心或許還有些道理;
Besides, if he were asking for silver and gold, your suspicion would have some ground;
14:388
but if he approaches you for necessary food, why do you philosophize out of season, and scrutinize superfluous things, charging him with idleness and sloth? For if these things must be said, they must be spoken not to others, but to our own selves.
14:389
Whenever, then, you draw near to God asking forgiveness of sins, call to mind these very words, and you will know that with more justice you yourself will hear them from God, than the poor man hears them from you.
14:390
然而神卻從未對你說過這樣的話,好比說:「你走開吧;
And yet God has never said these words to you, such as, 'Depart;
14:391
因為你是個騙子,你不斷進入教會,聽我的律法,卻在市集上將金子、私慾、情誼以及一切,都看得比我的命令更重;
for you are an impostor, entering continually into church and hearing My laws, yet in the marketplace preferring gold and lust and friendship and, in short, all things to My commandments;
14:392
如今你固然顯得謙卑,但禱告過後,你又變得放肆、殘忍、無情;
and now indeed you become humble, but after the prayer you are bold and cruel and inhuman;
14:393
depart therefore hence, and come no more to Me.'
14:394
我們原是配得聽見這些話,甚至比這更多的話;
For these things, and more than these, we were worthy to hear;
14:395
yet nonetheless He has never reproached us with any such thing, but both is long-suffering and fulfils all that is on His own part, and gives us more than we ask.
14:396
Considering these things, then, let us relieve the poverty of those in need, and even if they practise imposture, let us not scrutinize too closely.
14:397
For we too stand in need of such a salvation—one that comes with pardon, with loving-kindness, with much mercy.
14:398
For it is not possible, it is not possible, if we are examined strictly according to our own doings, ever to be saved; rather all must of necessity be punished and perish.
14:399
所以,我們不要作別人苛刻的審判官,免得我們自己也被追討嚴格的帳目;
Let us not, then, become bitter judges of others, that we too may not be required to render an exact account;
14:400
for we too have sins greater than all pardon.
14:401
所以,我們倒要憐憫那些犯了不可赦之罪的人,好叫我們自己也預先為自己積存這樣的憐憫;
Therefore let us rather show mercy to those who sin unpardonably, that we too may lay up beforehand for ourselves such mercy;
14:402
and yet, however much we may lavish, we shall never be able to bring in such loving-kindness as we ourselves need from the God who loves mankind.
14:403
How then is it not absurd that we, being ourselves in need of so much, should scrutinize our fellow-servants closely, and do everything against our own selves? For you do not so much prove him unworthy of your benefaction,
14:404
as you prove your own self unworthy of God's loving-kindness.
14:405
For he who scrutinizes his fellow-servant closely will find God doing this to him much more.
14:406
Let us not then speak against our own selves, but even if they come through slothfulness, even if through idleness, let us give.
14:407
For we too sin much through slothfulness—or rather in all things through slothfulness—and God does not exact the penalty from us at once, but grants us a set term for repentance, nourishing us every day, chastening, teaching, supplying all other things, that we too may emulate this mercy of His.
14:408
Let us then put an end to this cruelty, let us cast out this savagery, seeing that we benefit ourselves rather than others.
14:409
For to these we give silver and bread and clothing, but for our own selves we lay up beforehand the greatest glory, and one that cannot be set forth in words.
14:410
因為我們既將不朽壞地領回我們的身體,就要與基督一同得榮耀、一同作王;
For having received back our bodies incorruptible, we shall be glorified together and shall reign together with Christ;
14:411
這是何等偉大,我們將來就會知道——或者不如說,如今我們無從清楚地明白這事;
and how great this is, we shall know hereafter—or rather, clearly indeed we shall know it from no source now;
14:412
but that, being led up from the good things among us, we may gain at least some small notion of it, I will attempt, as far as I am able, to set forth what has been said.
14:413
For tell me, if someone should promise you, being grown old and living in poverty, that he would suddenly make you young, and bring you to the very prime of your age, and render you exceedingly strong and comely above all men, and give you a kingdom over the whole earth for a thousand years, a kingdom possessing the deepest peace—what would you not choose to do and to suffer for the sake of this promise? Behold, then, Christ promises not these things, but things far greater than these.
14:414
因為朽壞與不朽壞之間的差別,遠大於老年與青春之間的差別;
For the difference between corruption and incorruption is not so great as that between old age and youth;
14:415
nor is the interval between the glory to come and the present as great as that between a kingdom and poverty, but as great as that between dreams and truth.
14:416
或者不如說,我至今還什麼都沒有說;
Or rather, I have as yet said nothing;
14:417
因為沒有任何言語足以述說那將來之事與現今之事之間差別的巨大;
for no words are sufficient to set forth the greatness of the difference between the things that shall be and the things that are present;
14:418
and as regards time, it is not at all possible even to conceive of a difference.
14:419
因為誰能將一個沒有窮盡的生命,與現今的事相比呢?而那平安與現今相比的距離,正如平安與戰爭之間的差別那樣之大;
For how could anyone compare with present things a life that has no end? And the interval of that peace in relation to the present is as great as the difference between peace and war;
14:420
而那不朽壞的距離,正如純淨的珍珠勝過一塊泥土那樣;
and that of incorruption, as much as the pure pearl is better than a clod of clay;
14:421
or rather, whatever one may say, he will be able to set forth nothing.
14:422
For even if I compare the beauty of those bodies to the light of a sunbeam, or to the most brilliant lightning-flash, I shall say nothing yet worthy of that splendor.
14:423
For the sake of these things, how much money and how many bodies would it not be worth surrendering—nay rather, how many souls would it not be worth surrendering? Now, if someone were to bring you into a palace, and were to arrange for the emperor to converse with you in the presence of all, and to make you his table-companion and his intimate, you would say that you were more blessed than all men.
14:424
But when you are about to ascend into heaven, and to stand beside the King of all, and to shine in return upon the angels, and to enjoy that ineffable glory, do you hesitate whether you ought to surrender money—when, even if you had to strip off life itself, you ought rather to leap and exult and take wings for very joy?
14:425
But you, in order to gain a beginning that furnishes you with occasions for theft (for I would not call such a thing gain), even cast away what you have, and, borrowing from others if need be, you do not shrink from mortgaging even your wife and children.
14:426
Yet when the kingdom of heaven lies before you—a dominion that has no successor—and when God bids you take, not a corner-piece of earth, but heaven whole and entire, you hang back and draw away, and gape after money, and do not consider that if these portions of that heaven which lie toward us are so beautiful and delightful, how great are the things above, and the heaven of heaven? But since for the present it is not possible to see these things with the eyes of the body, ascend in thought, and standing above this heaven, look up to that heaven which is higher than this, to the boundless height, to the light that is full of awe, to the hosts of the angels, to the countless legions of the archangels, to the other bodiless powers.
14:427
And again, coming down from above, take hold of the image among us.
14:428
And sketch out the things that surround the emperor among us: such as men clothed in gold, and teams of white mules adorned with gold, and jeweled chariots, and snow-white coverlets, and plumes waving upon the chariots, and dragons figured upon silken robes, and golden shields with bosses, and from these bands stretched upward to the chariot-rails through many jewels, and horses bearing gold, and golden bridles.
14:429
But whenever we see the emperor, we no longer behold any of these things.
14:430
For he alone turns our gaze upon himself—both the purple robes, and the diadem, and the throne, and the clasp, and the sandals, and all the great splendor of his aspect.
14:431
Having therefore gathered all these things carefully, transfer your thought again from them to the things above, and to that fearful day on which Christ shall come.
14:432
For then you will not see teams of mules, nor golden chariots, nor dragons and shields, but things that are full of great awe, and that inspire such astonishment that even the bodiless powers themselves are struck with amazement.
14:433
For 'the powers of the heavens,' it says, 'shall be shaken.'
14:434
For then the whole heaven is opened, and the gates of those vaults are flung wide, and the only-begotten Son of God comes down, attended not by twenty, nor by a hundred men, but by thousands and myriads of angels and archangels, of the Cherubim, of the Seraphim, of the other powers; and all things shall be full of fear and trembling, as the earth is rent asunder, and all the men who have ever been born, from the time Adam came into being until that day, rise up from the earth and are caught up—while He appears in such great glory that even the moon and the sun and every light are hidden, being outshone by that radiance.
14:435
What discourse can set forth that blessedness, that splendor, that glory? Alas, my soul!
14:436
For indeed it comes upon me now to weep and to groan deeply, when I consider from what good things we have fallen away, from what blessedness we are estranged.
14:437
For indeed we are estranged (I speak for the present of myself), unless we accomplish something great and marvelous.
14:438
Let no one, then, speak to me here of hell.
14:439
For to fall from so great a glory is harder than any hell, and to be estranged from that portion is worse than ten thousand punishments.
14:440
But nevertheless we still gape after present things, and do not consider the craftiness of the devil, who through small things robs us of great ones, and gives clay that he may snatch away gold—nay rather, that he may snatch away heaven—and shows a shadow that he may cast us out of the truth, and creates phantoms in dreams (for such is present wealth), so that when day comes he may prove us poorer than all men.
14:441
Considering these things, then, let us at length at last flee the deceit, and pass over to the things to come.
14:442
For it is not possible to say that we were ignorant of the perishableness of the present life, since affairs cry out daily, more loudly than a trumpet, of the worthlessness that is present—the laughter, the shame, the dangers, the pits.
14:443
What defense, then, shall we have, pursuing with much zeal the things that are perilous and full of shame, but fleeing the things that are safe and that make us honorable and illustrious, and giving ourselves wholly over to the tyranny of money? For the slavery to these things is harsher than any tyranny.
14:444
And they know it, as many as have been counted worthy to be delivered from it.
14:445
In order, therefore, that you too may learn this good freedom, burst the bonds, leap away from the snare.
14:446
And let no gold lie stored in your house, but that which is more precious than ten thousand treasures—almsgiving and love of mankind in place of gold.
14:447
For this gives us boldness before God, while that pours much shame upon us, and makes the devil breathe fiercely against us.
14:448
Why then do you arm your enemy, and make him stronger? Arm your own right hand against him, and bring all the beauty of your house into your soul, and lay up all your wealth in your mind, and instead of a strongbox and a house let heaven guard your gold, and let us clothe ourselves with all these things.
14:449
For we are much better than walls, and more honorable than the pavement.
14:450
Why then, forsaking our own selves, do we empty all our zeal upon those things which we cannot take with us when we depart, and which oftentimes we cannot even keep hold of while we remain here—when it is possible so to be rich that we may appear most abundant not only here but there also? For he who carries about his fields and his houses and his gold upon his soul, wherever he appears, appears together with this wealth.
14:451
And how can this come to pass? one says. It can, and with much ease.
14:452
For if you transfer them into heaven through the hand of the poor, you will transfer everything into your own soul, so that even if death should thereafter come, no one will take them away from you, but you will depart rich there as well.
14:453
Such a treasure did Tabitha possess.
14:454
Therefore it was not the house that proclaimed her, nor the walls, nor the stones, nor the pillars, but the bodies of widows clothed by her, and tears poured forth, and death put to flight, and life restored.
14:455
Let us too prepare for ourselves such storehouses, let us build for ourselves such houses.
14:456
Thus shall we have God as our fellow-worker, and we ourselves shall be His fellow-workers.
14:457
For He indeed brought the poor from non-being into being, but you, by tending and setting them right, did not allow those thus brought forth and made to be destroyed by hunger and by the rest of their misery, and in every way you upheld the temple of God.
14:458
What could be equal to this in respect of benefit and good repute? But if you have not yet clearly understood with what an honor He has adorned you, in bidding you set poverty right, reckon this to yourself:
14:459
if He had given you such authority as to be able to set the falling heaven aright, would you not have deemed the matter an honor exceedingly surpassing you? Behold, then, He has now counted you worthy of a greater honor.
14:460
For that which is more precious to Him than the heavens, this He has entrusted to you to set right.
14:461
For among the things that are seen, nothing is equal to man in God's sight.
14:462
For indeed He made heaven and earth and sea for man's sake.
14:463
And He takes more delight in dwelling in him than in the heaven.
14:464
But nevertheless, though we know even these things, we take no care or forethought for any of God's temples, but leaving them to be neglected, we build for ourselves splendid and great houses.
14:465
For this reason we are destitute of all good things, and poorer than the very poor, because we beautify these houses, which we cannot take and depart hence, while we forsake those which we can carry away together with our own selves.
14:466
For indeed the dissolved bodies of the poor shall assuredly rise again.
14:467
And when God, who gave these commands, shall then bring them forth, He will praise those who took care of them, and will marvel that, when they were about to fall now under hunger, now under nakedness and cold, they set them right in every way.
14:468
But nevertheless, even with so many praises set before us, we still delay, and draw back from this good care.
14:469
基督尚且無處可安歇,反倒作客旅、赤身、飢餓地四處漂泊;
And Christ has nowhere to lodge, but goes about a stranger and naked and hungry.
14:470
But you build suburban estates and baths and colonnaded walks and ten thousand chambers, idly and in vain, and you do not impart even a little roof to Christ, while for crows and vultures you adorn your upper chambers.
14:471
What could be worse than this madness? What more grievous than this insanity? For these are things of the utmost madness—nay rather, whatever one might call it, one will say nothing worthy of it.
14:472
But nevertheless, if we are willing, it is possible—grievous though the disease be—to beat it back; and not only possible, but even easy; and not merely easy, but far easier to be rid of this plague than of bodily ailments, inasmuch as the Physician also is greater.
14:473
Let us therefore draw Him to ourselves, and entreat Him to lay hold together with us, and let us bring in our own part—I mean, resolve and readiness.
14:474
For He will need nothing else, but if only He takes hold of these, He will bring in everything on His own part.
14:475
所以,讓我們獻上自己那一份,好使我們在此既得享純全的健康,也得著那將來的美善;
Let us therefore bring in our own part, that both here we may enjoy pure health, and may attain unto the good things to come;
14:476
by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father be glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
