'I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, well-pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service.'
20:2
Having discoursed at length concerning the loving-kindness of God, and having shown His unutterable care and His ineffable goodness which cannot even be searched out, he now sets forth this very thing, in order to persuade those who have received such benefits to display a manner of life worthy of the gift.
20:3
他雖是這樣偉大、這樣崇高,卻不推辭去懇求;
And though he is so great and so exalted, he does not decline to entreat;
20:4
and this not for things which he himself was to enjoy, but for things which they stood to gain.
20:5
And why do you marvel if he himself does not decline to entreat, seeing that he even
20:6
sets before them the mercies of God? For since, he says, we have countless good things from this source, from the mercies of God, revere them, be moved by respect for them.
20:7
For they themselves put forward the supplication, that you may display nothing unworthy of them.
20:8
所以他說:我正是藉著這些事勸你們——藉著那使你們得救的事;
Through these very things, then, he says, I beseech you—through the very things by which you were saved;
20:9
just as if someone, wishing to make a man who had received great benefits feel shame, should bring forward his very benefactor as a suppliant.
20:10
And what is it that you beseech, tell me? 'To present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, well-pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service.'
20:11
For since he said 'a sacrifice,' lest anyone should suppose that he was bidding them slaughter their bodies, he quickly added 'living.'
20:12
接著,為要把它與猶太人的祭區別開來,他說:「是聖潔的,是神所喜悅的;你們如此事奉乃是理所當然的」;
Then, distinguishing it from the Jewish sacrifice, he says, 'holy, well-pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service';
20:13
for that other was bodily, and not very well-pleasing.
20:14
'For who has required these things at your hands?' He says. And in many other places He is seen to reject them.
20:15
Yet it was not this sacrifice, but even while that one was being offered, it was this that He sought.
20:16
所以祂也說:「凡以感謝獻上為祭的,便是榮耀我」;
Wherefore He also said, 'The sacrifice of praise shall glorify Me';
20:17
and again, 'I will praise the name of my God with a song, and this shall please God better than a young bullock that puts forth horns and hoofs.'
20:18
And in another place, casting it out, He says:
20:19
'Shall I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?' He added, 'Offer unto God the sacrifice of praise, and pay your vows unto the Most High.'
20:20
So here too Paul gives command:
20:21
'Present your bodies a living sacrifice.'
20:22
有人問:「身體怎能作祭呢?」你的眼不看任何邪惡的事,它就成了祭;
'And how,' one asks, 'could the body become a sacrifice?' Let the eye look upon nothing evil, and it has become a sacrifice;
20:23
你的舌不說任何羞恥的話,它就成了供物;
let the tongue speak nothing shameful, and it has become an offering;
20:24
let the hand do nothing lawless, and it has become a whole burnt offering.
20:25
Or rather, these things are not enough, but we also need the active working of good deeds, that the hand may do almsgiving, the mouth may bless those who insult us, and the ear may give itself continually to divine hearings.
20:26
For the sacrifice has nothing unclean; the sacrifice is a firstfruit of the rest.
20:27
所以,讓我們也把自己的手、腳、口以及其餘的一切,都當作初熟的果子獻與神;
Let us too, then, offer as firstfruits to God our hands and feet and mouth and all the rest;
20:28
such a sacrifice is well-pleasing, whereas that of the Jews was even unclean.
20:29
'For their sacrifices,' He says, 'are unto them as the bread of mourning.'
20:30
那祭物把被宰殺的獻為死的;
That sacrifice presented the slain victim as dead;
20:31
but this one renders the slain victim alive.
20:32
因為當我們治死自己的肢體時,那時我們才能活著;
For when we have put our members to death, then shall we be able to live;
20:33
for this is the new law of sacrifice.
20:34
And therefore the manner of the fire also is strange and marvellous.
20:35
For it needs no wood nor material laid beneath it, but our fire lives of itself, by its own power, and it does not consume the victim but rather gives it life.
20:36
這正是神從起初所尋求的祭;
This is the sacrifice which God sought from of old;
20:37
wherefore the prophet also said, 'A sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit.'
20:38
And the three children too offered this sacrifice, saying:
20:39
'There is neither ruler, nor prophet, nor place to offer the firstfruits and to find mercy; but in a contrite soul and in a spirit of humility may we be accepted.'
20:40
Consider how in each single word he has employed great exactness.
20:41
For he did not say, 'Make your bodies a sacrifice,' but, 'Present them.'
20:42
彷彿是說:「從今以後你們與這些肢體再無相干之處」;
as if he said, 'Henceforth have nothing in common with them;'
20:43
for they too who present war-horses have nothing further in common with them.
20:44
You then also have presented your members to the war against the devil and to that fearful array of battle;
20:45
do not drag them down to private and menial services.
20:46
And by this he shows yet another thing, namely, that we must also make them approved, if indeed we are to present them.
20:47
For it is not to any of the men of earth, but to God Himself, the King of all, that we present them, not that He may merely wage war, but that He may also have the King Himself seated upon them.
20:48
因為祂並不推辭駕臨在我們的肢體之上,反倒極其願意如此;
For He does not refuse to be seated upon our members, but even greatly desires this;
20:49
and what a king would not choose to do towards a fellow-servant of ours, this the Lord of the angels chooses.
20:50
既然它既要被獻上、又是祭物,就當除去一切瑕疵;
Since then it is both to be presented and is a sacrifice, remove every blemish;
20:51
for if it has a blemish, it can no longer be a sacrifice.
20:52
For neither can an eye be sacrificed that looks upon unchaste things, nor a hand be presented that snatches and overreaches, nor feet that walk crookedly and go up into theatres, nor a belly that is a slave to gluttony and
20:53
kindles the lusts of pleasures, nor a heart that harbours wrath and unchaste desire, nor a tongue that utters shameful things.
20:54
Wherefore we must scrutinize our body on every side for blemishes.
20:55
因為那些獻舊約祭物的人尚且被吩咐要察看一切,凡耳朵殘缺的、尾巴短缺的、生疥的、長癬的都不准獻上;
For if those who offered the ancient sacrifices were commanded to examine everything, and were not permitted to offer an animal that was crop-eared, or bob-tailed, or mangy, or that had the scab;
20:56
much more must we, who offer not irrational sheep but ourselves, display greater exactness and be pure on every side, that we too may be able to say, according to Paul:
20:57
'For I am now being poured out as a drink-offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.'
20:58
因為他比任何祭物都更純潔;
For he was purer than any sacrifice;
20:59
wherefore he even called himself a drink-offering.
20:60
And this will come to pass, if we do away with the old man, if we put to death our members that are upon the earth, if we crucify the world to ourselves.
20:61
如此我們就不再需要刀,不再需要祭壇,不再需要火了;
So shall we no longer need either knife, nor altar, nor fire;
20:62
or rather, we shall need all these, yet not such as are made with hands, but all shall come to us from above—both the fire from above and the knife—and the breadth of heaven shall be our altar.
20:63
因為當以利亞獻上有形的祭物時,尚且有火焰從上頭降下,燒盡了一切——連水、柴和石頭都燒盡了;
For if, when Elijah offered a visible sacrifice, a flame borne down from above consumed everything—the water, the wood, and the stones;
20:64
much more shall this be so in your case.
20:65
And even if you have something fluid and worldly clinging to you, yet if you bring your sacrifice with a right mind, the fire of the Spirit coming down will both consume that worldly element and perfect the whole offering.
20:66
But what is 'reasonable service'? The spiritual ministry, the manner of life that is according to Christ.
20:67
所以正如那在神的殿中供職並被分別為聖的人,無論他本是何等人,在那時就變得更加持重、更加莊嚴;
As, then, one who ministers in the house of God and is consecrated, whatever sort of man he be, becomes at that time more reserved and more grave;
20:68
so we too must be disposed throughout our whole life, as those who serve and are consecrated.
20:69
這事必要成就,只要你每日向祂獻上祭物,並作你自己身體的祭司,也作那照著心靈之德行的祭司;
And this will come to pass, if every day you offer sacrifices to Him, and become a priest of your own body and of the virtue that is according to the soul;
20:70
as, for instance, when you offer self-control, when almsgiving, when gentleness and long-suffering.
20:71
For in doing these things you offer a reasonable service, that is, one having nothing bodily, nothing gross, nothing perceptible to sense.
20:72
Having then exalted the hearer by these titles, and having declared each man to be a priest through his own flesh, through his manner of life, he tells also the way by which it is possible to accomplish all these things aright.
20:73
What then is the way? 'Be not conformed,' he says, 'to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.'
20:74
For the fashion of this world is grovelling and worthless and temporary, and has nothing lofty, nothing lasting, nothing upright, but all things distorted.
20:75
所以你若願意行得正直,就不要照著今生的樣式塑造自己;
If then you wish to walk uprightly, do not mould yourself according to the fashion of the present life;
20:76
for nothing in it is abiding or firmly established.
20:77
所以他才稱它為「樣式」;
Wherefore he also called it a 'fashion';
20:78
and elsewhere again, 'For the fashion of this world passes away.'
20:79
For it has nothing enduring nor fixed, but all things are temporary.
20:80
所以他說:「這個世界」;
Wherefore he said, 'to this world';
20:81
by this indeed signifying its perishable nature, and by the word 'fashion' its unsubstantial character.
20:82
For whether you speak of wealth, or of glory, or of bodily beauty, or of luxury, or of any other of the things that seem to be great, it is a fashion only, not the reality of a thing; a display and a mask, not any abiding substance.
20:83
But do you not be conformed to this, but be transformed, he says, by the renewing of your mind.
20:84
他沒有說「改換你的樣式」,乃是說「要變化」,藉此顯明屬世的事乃是樣式;
He did not say, 'Change your fashion,' but, 'Be transformed,' showing that the things of the world are a fashion;
20:85
but that of virtue is not a fashion, but a certain true form having a natural beauty, that needs not the outward paintings and fashions which appear and perish together in an instant.
20:86
For indeed all these things are dissolved before ever they appear.
20:87
If then you cast away the fashion, you will quickly come to the form.
20:88
For nothing is weaker than vice, nothing so easily grows old.
20:89
Then, since it is likely that being men we sin every day, he comforts the hearer, saying: 'Renew yourself every day.'
20:90
What we do in the case of our houses, ever repairing them as they grow old, this do also in your own case.
20:91
你今日犯了罪嗎?你使你的靈魂老舊了嗎?不要絕望,也不要頹然倒下;
Have you sinned today? Have you made your soul old? Do not despair, nor sink down;
20:92
倒要藉著悔改、眼淚、認罪並行善的作為使它更新;
but renew it by repentance and tears and confession and the working of good deeds;
20:93
and never cease from doing this.
20:94
And how shall we be able to do this? 'That you may prove the things that are excellent, what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.'
20:95
他這話或是說:「你們要被更新,好叫你們曉得甚麼是有益的事,並神的旨意」;
Either he means this: 'Be renewed, that you may learn the things that are profitable and the will of God;'
20:96
or that: 'You are able to be thus renewed, if you learn the things that are profitable, and whatever God wills.'
20:97
For if you see this, and learn to discern the natures of things, you have laid hold of the whole way that is according to virtue.
20:98
'And who,' he says, 'is ignorant of the things that are profitable and what is the will of God?' Those who are agog after present things; those who reckon wealth a thing to be envied and despise poverty; those who pursue positions of power; those who gape after outward glory; those who reckon themselves great when they raise splendid houses, and purchase costly tombs, and possess herds of slaves, and carry about a great swarm of eunuchs.
20:99
這些人既不曉得甚麼是對他們有益的事,也不曉得神的旨意;
These men are ignorant both of the things that are profitable for them and of the will of God;
20:100
For indeed these two things are one and the same.
20:101
因為神所願意的,正是那對我們有益處的事;
For God wills the things that are profitable to us;
20:102
and the things which God wills, these also are profitable to us.
20:103
What then are the things which God wills? To live in poverty, in lowliness of mind, in the contempt of glory, in self-restraint, not in luxury; in affliction, not in ease; in mourning, not in dissipation and laughter; and in all the other things which He has laid down by law.
20:104
But the majority even regard these things as ill omens; so far are they from thinking them to be profitable and the will of God.
20:105
For this very reason they will never be able even to come near the labours undertaken for the sake of virtue.
20:106
因為那些連德行究竟是甚麼都不知道的人,反倒推崇邪惡取代德行,並將淫婦而非貞潔的婦人囚禁於自己心中,這樣的人何時才能脫離這現今的世代呢?因此,在一切之先,我們對諸事的判斷必須端正分明;
For those who do not so much as know this very thing—what virtue actually is—but instead admire vice in its place, and shut up within themselves the harlot instead of the chaste woman, when will they ever be able to depart from the present age? Therefore, before all else, our judgement concerning things must be rightly ordered;
20:107
縱使我們不去追求德行,至少要稱讚德行;
and even if we do not pursue virtue, let us at least praise virtue;
20:108
and even if we do not flee from vice, let us at least condemn wickedness, so that for the present we may keep our votes uncorrupted.
20:109
For thus, advancing along the road, we shall be able also to lay hold of the works themselves.
20:110
For this reason he too bids us be renewed: 'That ye may prove what is the will of God.'
20:111
And here he seems to me also to be striking at the Jews, those who cling to the Law.
20:112
因為那舊的體制固然也是神的旨意;
For the old polity too was indeed the will of God;
20:113
然而卻不是首要的旨意,乃是因著他們的軟弱而被容許的;
yet not as a primary will, but conceded on account of their weakness;
20:114
whereas the perfect and well-pleasing thing is the new polity.
20:115
For indeed, when he called it a reasonable service, he named it so in contradistinction to that former one.
20:116
'For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.'
20:117
Having said above, 'I beseech you through the mercies of God,' here again he says, 'through the grace.'
20:118
See the humility of the teacher; see his subdued disposition.
20:119
他從不說自己配得人信任,足以作出這樣的勸勉與忠告;
Nowhere does he say that he is himself worthy of credit for such exhortation and counsel;
20:120
but at one time he takes the mercies of God along with himself, and at another the grace.
20:121
'For it is not my own word that I speak,' he says, 'but that which is from God.'
20:122
他並沒有說「我憑著神的智慧對你們說」,或「我憑著神的立法對你們說」,乃是說「憑著恩典」;
And he did not say, 'For I say unto you through the wisdom of God,' 'for I say unto you through the legislation of God,' but 'through the grace';
20:123
continually reminding them of the benefits, so as to make them more grateful, and to show that in this way too they are bound to obedience to what is said.
20:124
不單是對這人或那人,乃是對治理的與被治理的、對奴僕與自主的、對愚昧的與有智慧的、對婦女與男子、對少年與老者;
Not to this man and that man only, but also to ruler and ruled, to slave and free, to unlearned and wise, to woman and man, to young and old;
20:125
for this law is common, since it is also the Master's.
20:126
In this way too he makes his discourse free from offence, setting forth his teachings before all, even before those who are not liable to reproof, so that those who are liable may more readily accept such rebuke and correction.
20:127
And what is it that you say, tell me? 'Not to think of oneself more highly than one ought to think.'
20:128
Here he brings in the mother of good things, humility of mind, imitating his own Teacher.
20:129
For when He had gone up into the mountain, and was about to weave His ethical discourse, He began from this very point first, and laid these foundations, speaking thus:
20:130
'Blessed are the poor in spirit.'
20:131
照樣,他如今也從那些教義的事轉到更關乎品行的事上,先總括地教導了德行,向我們索求那奇妙的祭;
So he too, now passing over from the doctrinal matters to the more ethical ones, taught virtue in general, having demanded from us that wonderful sacrifice;
20:132
而在他將要逐項描述德行之際,他彷彿從頭部開始,以謙卑的心為起點,說:「不要看自己過於所當看的」;
and being about to describe it in its particulars, he begins, as it were from the head, with humility of mind, and says, 'Not to think of oneself more highly than one ought to think';
20:133
for this is the will of God.
20:134
'But to think soberly.'
20:135
And what he says is of this kind:
20:136
We have received understanding, not that we should use it for arrogance, but that we should use it for soberness.
20:137
他並沒有說「以致於謙卑」,乃是說「以致於中道清明」;
And he did not say, 'unto lowliness of mind,' but 'unto soberness';
20:138
他在此所謂「中道清明」,並非指那與淫蕩相對的德行,也非指擺脫放縱,乃是指心思上的警醒與健全;
meaning here by 'soberness' not the virtue that is contrasted with wantonness, nor being freed from licentiousness, but being watchful and sound in mind;
20:139
for indeed this too is called 'soberness' (sōphrosynē), from having one's mind (phrenes) sound (sōas).
20:140
Showing therefore that he who does not act with moderation cannot even be sober-minded—that is, be settled and sound—but that such a man raves and is beside himself, and is more frenzied than any madman, he called humility of mind 'soberness.'
20:141
'According as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.'
20:142
For since the bestowal of the gifts of grace lifted many up into arrogance, both among these and among the Corinthians, see how he makes plain the cause of the disease, and little by little draws it out from beneath.
20:143
For having said that one ought to think soberly, he added:
20:144
'According as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith,' here calling the gift of grace 'faith.'
20:145
And by saying 'hath dealt,' he both consoled the one who had received the lesser portion, and restrained the one who had enjoyed the greater.
20:146
For if God dealt it out, and the achievement is not yours, why do you think highly of yourself?
20:147
But if anyone should say that here 'faith' is not being called the gift of grace, this too again shows him more forcibly humbling the boasters.
20:148
For if faith is the cause of the gift of grace, by which the miracles are wrought, and this too is from God, whence do you think highly of yourself? For indeed, had He not come and been made flesh, neither would the things of faith have gone forward.
20:149
So that all good things have their beginning from thence.
20:150
而祂既親自賜下,也就知道如何分配;
And if He Himself gives, He knows how to apportion;
20:151
for He Himself made all, and He cares alike for all.
20:152
And just as the giving came from His love for mankind, so also did the measure of how much to give.
20:153
For surely, having displayed His goodness in the chief matter—which is the giving of the gifts of grace—He was not going to betray you in the measure.
20:154
因為祂若有意羞辱你,起初就根本不會賜下;
For if He had wished to dishonour you, He would not have given at all in the first place;
20:155
然而祂若熱切地要拯救你、尊榮你(正是為此祂才降臨,並分賜了如此眾多的美善),你又為何煩擾不安、心緒紛亂,把你的悟性濫用以致於愚妄,使自己比那天生愚昧的人更加蒙羞呢?因為天生就成了愚人,並不算是罪過;
but if He was zealous to save and to honour you (for it was on this account that He came and distributed so many good things), for what reason are you troubled and agitated, and have misused your understanding unto folly, disgracing yourself worse than one who is a fool by nature? For to have become a fool by nature is no charge against a man;
20:156
but to have become a fool through one's understanding both is deprived of pardon and brings the greater punishment.
20:157
Such are those who think highly of themselves on account of wisdom, and fall into the uttermost arrogance.
20:158
For nothing makes one so foolish as does arrogance.
20:159
Wherefore also the prophet thus called the barbarian, saying, 'But the fool will speak folly.'
20:160
And that you may learn his folly even from his very words, listen to what he says:
20:161
'I will set my throne above the stars of heaven, and I will be like the Most High.'
20:162
'I will grasp the whole world in my hand as a nest, and I will take it up as eggs that have been left behind.'
20:163
What then could be more foolish than these words? And every piece of boastful speech straightway draws down upon itself this reproach.
20:164
縱使我把那些因驕傲而喪失理智之人的每一句話一一擺在眾人面前,你也無法分辨這些話究竟是出於一個喪心病狂者,還是出於一個愚人;
And even if I should bring forward into the midst each single utterance of those who have lost their wits through pride, you would not be able to distinguish whether the words are those of one bereft of his senses or of a fool;
20:165
so completely is this one and the same defect.
20:166
For indeed another barbarian again says, 'I am a god, and not a man';
20:167
and yet another, 'Shall God be able to save you, or to deliver you out of my hands?' And the Egyptian too: 'I know not the Lord, and I will not let Israel go';
20:168
and the foolish man spoken of by the prophet is such a one, saying in his heart, 'There is no God';
20:169
and Cain too: 'Am I my brother's keeper?' Are you then unable to distinguish whether the words are those of men bereft of their senses, or of fools? For the...
20:170
Madness, falling away from due proportion and issuing from the mind (whence it is even called 'senselessness'), makes men both fools and boasters.
20:171
And if the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, then surely the beginning of folly is not to know the Lord.
20:172
If, then, to know is wisdom and not to know is folly, and if this ignorance arises from pride (for the beginning of pride is not to know the Lord), then pride is the uttermost folly.
20:173
拿八也是這樣的人,縱然他不是對神、乃是對人,卻因狂妄而成了無知的人;
Such a one was Nabal too, who—if not toward God, yet toward man—had through his madness become a fool;
20:174
but afterward he died of terror.
20:175
For whenever a man falls away from the measure of prudence, he becomes at once both cowardly and reckless, since his soul has grown weak.
20:176
正如身體一旦失去了勻稱的調和、變得失衡,就被一切病症所侵襲;
For just as the body, when it has lost its balanced temperament and become ill-tempered, is prey to every disorder,
20:177
so also the soul, when it has lost its noble greatness and its humility, and has taken on a certain feeble condition, becomes both cowardly and reckless and senseless, and thereafter will be ignorant even of itself.
20:178
而那不認識自己的人,怎能認識超乎自己的事呢?正如患了譫妄狂病的人,一旦不認識自己,連腳前的東西也看不見了;
And he who is ignorant of himself, how shall he know the things above himself? For just as one seized with frenzy, when he becomes ignorant of himself, does not even know what lies before his feet,
20:179
又如眼睛一旦自身瞎了,便使其餘的肢體全都陷入黑暗;
and as the eye, when it is itself maimed, casts darkness over all the other members,
20:180
so it happens also in the case of madness.
20:181
Wherefore these are more wretched than the insane and than those who are fools by nature.
20:182
因為他們像瘋子一樣引人發笑,又像愚人一樣令人厭惡;
For like the former they stir up laughter, and like the latter they are offensive;
20:183
他們像瘋子一樣失了常態,卻不像瘋子那樣得人憐憫;
and they are beside themselves like the former, yet are not pitied like the former;
20:184
他們像愚人一樣神志錯亂,卻不像愚人那樣得人寬容,反而只招來憎恨;
and they are deranged like the latter, yet are not pardoned like the latter, but only hated;
20:185
and having the defects of both, they are deprived of the indulgence granted to either, being ridiculous not only in their words but also in their very bearing.
20:186
請告訴我,你為何昂首挺頸?為何踮著腳尖行走?為何高揚眉毛?為何鼓起胸膛?你連一根頭髮也不能使它變白變黑,卻彷彿統管萬物一般凌空而行。或許你還盼望長出翅膀,好叫你不用在地上行走;
For tell me, why do you crane your neck? Why do you walk on the tips of your toes? Why do you arch your eyebrows? Why do you puff out your chest? You cannot make a single hair white or black, yet you tread the air as though you were master of all. Perhaps you would even like wings to sprout on you, that you might not walk upon the earth;
20:187
perhaps you even long to be some monstrous prodigy.
20:188
難道你現今不是已把自己弄成怪物了嗎——身為人,卻試圖飛翔?不如說,內裡飄浮、四面腫脹發炎?我該怎樣稱呼你,才能壓下你的狂妄呢?我若稱你為灰、為塵、為煙、為粉末,我固然道出了你的卑微,卻仍未確切捕捉到我所要的那幅圖像;
For have you not now made yourself a monster, being a man yet attempting to fly? Or rather, both flying within and inflamed on every side? What shall I call you, that I may cast down your madness? Should I call you ashes and dust and smoke and powder, I would have named your worthlessness, yet I would not yet have accurately grasped the image I intended;
20:189
for I wish to set forth also their inflammation and their utter emptiness within.
20:190
What image, then, might we find fitting for them? To me they seem to resemble tow that has been set ablaze.
20:191
因為那麻絮燃燒之後,看似膨脹、高高隆起;
For that too, after the burning, seems to swell up and rise high;
20:192
yet at the slightest touch of a hand it all collapses, and appears meaner than any ashes.
20:193
這等人的靈魂也是如此;
Such also are the souls of these men;
20:194
for their empty inflation, and any chance assault that comes upon it, will be able to humble it and cast it down.
20:195
因為狂妄的人必定同時是軟弱的;
For the man of madness must of all necessity be also weak;
20:196
for such loftiness is not sound, but just as bubbles are easily burst, so also these men are readily destroyed.
20:197
And if you disbelieve, give me a man reckless and mad, and you will see him become more cowardly than one already fallen, and that at any chance turn of circumstance.
20:198
正如乾柴枝上騰起的火焰,才一點著便化為灰燼,而堅實木材的性質卻既不容易點燃,又能長久保持火焰燃燒;
For just as the flame that rises from twigs is no sooner kindled than it turns to ashes, while the nature of solid timber is neither easily kindled nor readily quenched, but keeps the flame burning for a long while;
20:199
堅固穩重的靈魂也是如此,既不容易被點燃,也不容易被熄滅;
so also souls that are firm and steadfast are neither easily set ablaze nor easily quenched;
20:200
but these men suffer both these things in a single moment of time.
20:201
Knowing this, then, let us practice humility of mind.
20:202
因為沒有甚麼比它更有能力;反倒它比磐石更堅強、比金剛石更堅實,把我們安置在比城樓、城邑、城牆更穩妥的堅固中,高過魔鬼的一切詭計;
For nothing is mightier than it; rather, it is stronger than rock and firmer than adamant, and it establishes us in greater security than towers and cities and walls, being loftier than all the devices of the devil;
20:203
just as, on the other hand, madness makes men an easy prey even to the most trifling of foes, being burst more easily than a bubble, as I have said, and torn more swiftly than a spider's web, and dissolved more quickly than smoke.
20:204
In order, then, that we may stand firm upon the solid rock, let us forsake that madness and choose this humility.
20:205
We shall find rest in the present life, and in the age to come we shall enjoy all good things, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, and so forth.
