'For we know that the law is spiritual;'
13:2
'but I am carnal, sold under sin.'
13:3
Since he had said that great evils had come to pass, and that sin, seizing its occasion, had become mightier than the commandment, and that the very opposite of what the Law was striving for had come about, and had cast the hearer into much perplexity, he now goes on to state also the reasoning according to which these things had come to pass, having first freed the Law from the wicked suspicion cast upon it.
13:4
For lest, on hearing that through the commandment sin took its occasion, and that when it came sin revived, and that through it sin deceived and slew,
13:5
in order, then, that no one should suppose the Law to be the cause of these evils, he first sets forth the defense on its behalf with great abundance, not only clearing it of the accusation, but also weaving for it a most exalted encomium.
13:6
And this he sets down not as one bestowing a favor of his own, but as one pronouncing a verdict held in common.
13:7
'For we know,' he says, 'that the Law is spiritual.'
13:8
這是眾所承認且顯而易見的,就是律法乃屬乎靈的;
This is confessed and manifest, that it is spiritual;
13:9
so far is it from being the cause of sin, or answerable for the evils that have come to pass.
13:10
And observe how he not only clears it of the accusation, but also praises it with all excess of commendation.
13:11
因為他稱律法為屬乎靈的,便顯明它是美德的教師,也是罪惡的仇敵;
For by calling it spiritual, he shows it to be a teacher of virtue and an enemy of vice;
13:12
因為所謂屬乎靈的,就是要引人遠離一切的罪;
for to be spiritual is to lead away from all sins;
13:13
which indeed is the very thing the Law did—terrifying, admonishing, chastising, correcting, and counseling all that pertains to virtue.
13:14
'Whence then,' he says, 'did sin come to be, if the teacher is so admirable?' From the sloth of the disciples.
13:15
Wherefore he added, saying, 'But I am carnal,' depicting the man who lives both under the Law and before the Law.
13:16
'Sold under sin.'
13:17
'For along with death,' he says, 'there entered in also the throng of the passions.'
13:18
For when the body became mortal, it necessarily received henceforth desire also, and anger and grief and all the rest, which stood in need of much philosophy, lest, overflowing within us, they should sink the reason into the deep abyss of sin.
13:19
因為這些事本身並不是罪;
For these things in themselves were not sin;
13:20
but their want of measure, when unbridled, was what wrought this.
13:21
For instance—that I may take one of them and treat it by way of example—desire is not sin; but when it falls into want of measure, unwilling to remain within the marriage bond of the Law, and leaping upon the wives of others, then thereafter the thing becomes adultery—yet not because of the desire, but because of its excess.
13:22
因為他讚美了律法之後,便立刻追溯到更早的時代,好叫他藉著顯明我們的族類即使在那時、以及在領受律法之時的光景,來宣告恩典的豐盛乃是必需的;
For having praised the Law, he ran at once to the earlier time, so that, by showing how our race was disposed even then, and at the time when it received the Law, he might declare that the abundance of grace was necessary;
13:23
which indeed he has been eager to establish everywhere.
13:24
For when he says, 'Sold under sin,' he speaks not only concerning those under the Law, but also concerning those who lived before the Law, and the men who existed from the beginning.
13:25
Then he tells also the manner of the selling and of the delivering over.
13:26
'For what I work out,' he says, 'I do not know.'
13:27
What is 'I do not know'? I am ignorant.
13:28
And when did this ever happen? For no one ever sinned in ignorance.
13:29
Do you see that, unless we pick out the expressions with fitting reverence and look to the Apostle's aim, countless absurdities will follow? For if men sinned in ignorance, they would not even be worthy to pay a penalty.
13:30
As, then, he said above, 'For apart from the Law sin is dead,'
13:31
他這樣說並非指他們不知道自己在犯罪,乃是指他們確實知道,卻不那麼精確;
not signifying by this that they did not know they were sinning, but that they knew indeed, yet not so exactly;
13:32
因此他們雖受懲罰,卻不那麼嚴厲;
wherefore they were punished, yet not so severely;
13:33
他又說「我就不知何為貪心」,這並非表明全然的無知,乃是彰顯那最清晰的知識;
and again, 'I had not known lust,' not signifying total ignorance, but manifesting the clearest knowledge;
13:34
因為他說「叫諸般的貪心在我裡面發動」,他這樣說並非指誡命產生了貪心,乃是指罪藉著誡命帶進了貪心的加劇;
for he said that 'it wrought in me all manner of lust,' not saying by this that the commandment produced the lust, but that sin, through the commandment, brought in the intensifying of the lust;
13:35
照樣,在此他說「因為我所作的,我自己不明白」時,也並非表明全然的無知;
so also here he does not signify total ignorance when he says, 'For what I work out, I do not know';
13:36
既然如此,他又怎能照著裡面的人喜歡神的律呢?那麼「我不明白」是甚麼意思?他是說:「我被蒙蔽了,我被擄去,我遭受欺壓,我不知自己怎樣被絆倒」;
since how could he delight in the Law of God according to the inner man? What then is 'I do not know'? 'I am darkened,' he says, 'I am carried away, I suffer violence, I know not how I am tripped up';
13:37
which we too are wont to say: 'I know not how so-and-so came and carried me off'—not putting forward ignorance, but manifesting some deception and circumstance and plot.
13:38
'For what I would, that I do not; but what I hate, that I do.'
13:39
How then do you not know what you work out? For if you will the good and hate the evil, this belongs to a perfected knowledge.
13:40
Whence it is plain that he said 'What I would not' also, not doing away with free will, nor introducing any forced necessity.
13:41
For if we sin not willingly, but under compulsion, then again the matter of the punishments that took place aforetime would have no reason.
13:42
然而正如他說「我不明白」時,所表明的並非無知,乃是我們所已論及的那些事;
But just as, in saying 'I do not know,' he indicated not ignorance, but the things we have spoken of;
13:43
照樣,他加上「我所不願意的」,所表明的也不是必然,乃是不贊同所行的事;
so also, in adding 'What I would not,' he signified not necessity, but the not approving of the things done;
13:44
since, if he had not meant to signify this by saying 'What I would not, that I do,' how is it that he did not add, 'But what I am compelled and forced to do, that I do'? For this is what stands opposed to willing and to freedom of choice.
13:45
But as it is, he did not say this; rather, in place of it he set 'What I hate,' that you might learn that even in saying 'What I would not,' he did not do away with freedom of choice.
13:46
那麼「我所不願意的」是甚麼呢?就是我所不贊同的、我所不接納的、我所不喜愛的;
What then is 'What I would not'? What I do not approve, what I do not accept, what I do not love;
13:47
by way of contrast with which he added also what follows, saying:
13:48
'If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the Law.'
13:49
Do you see for the time being the mind not corrupted, but preserving in the very deed its own nobility? For even if it does pursue vice, yet it pursues it while hating it—which would be the greatest encomium both of the natural law and of the written law.
13:50
他說:「律法是善的,這從我控告自己的事上就顯明了,就是我違背了律法、又恨惡自己所作的事;
'For that the Law is good,' he says, 'is plain from the very things whereof I accuse myself, in disobeying the Law and hating what has been done;
13:51
and yet, if the Law were the cause of sin, how, while delighting in it, should I hate the thing done that was commanded by it? For I consent unto the Law,' he says, 'that it is good.'
13:52
'But now it is no more I that work it out, but sin that dwells in me.'
13:53
'For I know that there dwells not in me'—that is, in my flesh—'anything good.'
13:54
Here those set upon it who slander the flesh and estrange it from the workmanship of God.
13:55
What then shall we say? The very things we said before when discoursing concerning the Law: that, just as there he says that the whole belongs to sin, so also here.
13:56
For he did not say that 'the flesh works it out,' but on the contrary, that 'It is no more I that work it out, but sin that dwells in me.'
13:57
他縱然說在肉體之中沒有良善居住,這也還算不得是對肉體的控告;
And if he says that no good dwells in it, this is not yet an accusation of the flesh;
13:58
for the fact that good does not dwell in it does not show it to be evil.
13:59
我們固然承認肉體比靈魂低下,也較為次要,但它並非相對敵、並非相爭戰、亦非邪惡,乃是如同琴之於彈琴者、船之於舵手一般,服在靈魂之下;
We indeed confess the flesh to be inferior to the soul and of lesser account, yet not contrary nor at war nor evil, but subject to the soul as the lyre to the lyre-player, and as the ship to the pilot;
13:60
which things are not contrary to those who guide and use them, but rather are in full accord with them, though not of equal honor with the craftsman.
13:61
因此,那說「技藝不在於琴,也不在於船,乃在於舵手和彈琴者」的人,並非貶低那些器物,乃是要顯明技藝與運用技藝的匠人之間相距何等之遠;
As, then, one who says that 'the art lies not in the lyre nor in the ship, but in the pilot and the lyre-player,' does not disparage the works, but shows how great is the interval between the art and the craftsman of the art;
13:62
so also Paul, in saying that 'there dwells no good in my flesh,' did not disparage the body, but showed the superiority of the soul.
13:63
因為正是靈魂,被託付了掌舵與彈琴的全部工作;
For this it is that has been entrusted with the whole business of the steering and of the lyre-playing;
13:64
which very thing Paul here shows, laying down the sovereignty of the soul.
13:65
他既將人分為這兩部分——靈魂與身體——便說肉體較為無理性,缺乏悟性,屬於被引導之列,而不屬於引導者之列;
And having divided man into these two—soul and body—he says that the flesh is the more irrational, and devoid of understanding, and among the things led, but not among the things that lead;
13:66
至於靈魂則較為明智,能辨別當行與不當行的事,卻不足以憑己力隨心駕馭那馬;
but the soul is wiser, and able to discern what ought and what ought not to be done, yet not sufficient of itself to rule the horse as it wills;
13:67
which would be an accusation not of the flesh only, but also of the soul—which knows indeed the things it ought to do, but no longer carries into deed the things resolved upon.
13:68
'For to will is present with me,' he says, 'but how to work out the good I find not.'
13:69
在此他又說「我尋不著」,所指的並非無知,也不是困惑,乃是罪的某種欺壓與陰謀;
Here again, in saying 'I find not,' he speaks not of ignorance, nor of perplexity, but of a certain insult and plot of sin;
13:70
這正是他所加上的話,把此意顯明得更為清楚;
which indeed he added, showing it yet more clearly;
13:71
'For the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I practise.'
13:72
'Now if I do that which I would not, it is no more I that work it out, but sin that dwells in me.'
13:73
Do you see how, having freed both the substance of the soul and the substance of the flesh from all blame, he transferred the whole matter to the wicked deed? For if the soul does not will the evil, it is acquitted; and if a man does not himself carry it into effect, the body too is set free; and the whole thing belongs to the wicked choice alone.
13:74
For the substance of the soul is not the same thing as that of the body, nor as the will; but the former are works of God, while the latter is a motion arising from ourselves, directed toward whatever we may choose to bring it.
13:75
因為那意願的能力乃是天生的,是從神而來的;
For the faculty of willing is something innate and from God;
13:76
but the willing of this or that particular thing is our own and belongs to our judgment.
13:77
I find then the law, that when I would do good, evil is present with me.
13:78
那麼這話是甚麼意思呢?他說:我按著良心讚許這律,並且發覺它也是我這願意行善之人的同盟,是加強我心志的助力;
What then is meant by this? I approve the law, he says, according to my conscience, and I find it also to be an ally to me who desire to do good, and one that intensifies my resolve;
13:79
for just as I delight in it, so it too commends my judgment.
13:80
你看見他如何指明:對善惡的分辨知識,是從起初就安置在我們裡面的,而摩西的律法乃是稱許這知識、又被這知識所稱許嗎?因為他在上文並沒有說:我從律法受教,乃是說:我贊同這律;
Do you see how he shows that the knowledge of good things and of things not such was laid within us from the beginning, and that the law of Moses commends this knowledge and is commended by it? For he did not say above, I am taught by the law, but, I consent unto the law;
13:81
nor did he say beforehand, I am instructed by it, but, I delight together with it.
13:82
But what is the meaning of, I delight together with it? It means, I acknowledge it as being good, just as it too acknowledges me who desire to do the good.
13:83
如此,願意善、不願意惡,乃是從起初就從上頭安置在我們裡面的;
So that to will the good and not to will the evil was laid down within us from above from the beginning;
13:84
but the law, when it came, became in the case of evils an accuser of more of them, and in the case of good things a commender of greater ones.
13:85
Do you see that everywhere it bears witness to a certain intensifying and increase only, but nothing more? For even while it commends, and while I delight with it and will the good, the evil still lies close at hand, and the practice of it is not done away.
13:86
So that the law becomes an ally to him who has chosen to do some good only in this respect, in that it too wills the same things as he.
13:87
Then, since he had set this down obscurely, as he goes on he interprets it and makes it clearer, showing how the evil lies close at hand, and how the law is together with him who desires to do the good.
13:88
For I delight, he says, in the law of God after the inward man.
13:89
For I knew the good even before this, he says; but having found it also laid down in writing, I approve it.
13:90
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind.
13:91
Here again he called sin a law that wars against us, not on account of its dignity, but on account of the vehement obedience of those who yield to it.
13:92
所以,正如他稱瑪門為主、稱肚腹為神,並非因它們自身有何尊貴,乃是因那些臣服於它們之人的深重奴役;
Just as, then, he calls mammon lord, and the belly god, not because of any dignity of their own, but because of the great servitude of those who are subject to them;
13:93
so here too he called sin a law, because of those who so serve it and are afraid to forsake it, just as those who have received the law dread to forsake the law.
13:94
他說,所以這罪乃是與那本性之律相對抗的;
This, then, he says, is set in opposition to the natural law;
13:95
for this is what is meant by, The law of my mind.
13:96
And he next introduces a battle array and a combat, and refers the whole struggle to the natural law.
13:97
因為摩西的律乃是後來額外加添的;
For that of Moses was added afterwards, out of abundance;
13:98
然而無論這一個或那一個,一個施教、一個稱許當行之事,在這場爭戰中都沒有成就甚麼大事;
yet nevertheless both this one and that, the one having taught and the other having commended what is fitting, accomplished nothing great in this battle;
13:99
so great was the tyranny of sin, conquering and prevailing.
13:100
And so Paul, making this plain and declaring the utter defeat, said:
13:101
But I see another law warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity.
13:102
For he did not say simply, Conquering, but, Bringing me into captivity to the law of sin.
13:103
He did not say, To the impulse of the flesh, nor, To the nature of the flesh, but, To the law of sin; that is, to its tyranny, its power.
13:104
那麼他怎麼說「附從在我肢體中之罪的律」呢?這是甚麼意思?因為這話並不是使肢體成為罪,反倒特別把它們與罪區別開來;
How then does he say, To the law of sin which is in my members? And what does this mean? For it is not that this makes the members sin; rather it especially separates them from sin;
13:105
for the thing that is in something is different from the thing in which that other thing resides.
13:106
所以,正如誡命並非邪惡,儘管罪藉著它得了機會;
Just as, therefore, the commandment is not wicked because sin took occasion through it;
13:107
照樣,肉體的本性也並非邪惡,儘管罪藉著它與我們爭戰;
so neither is the nature of the flesh wicked, even if through it sin wages war against us;
13:108
since on that reckoning the soul too would be wicked, and much more so, inasmuch as it has the authority over what is to be done.
13:109
But these things are not so, they are not.
13:110
For neither, if a tyrant and a robber should seize a splendid house and royal halls, is what happens a slander against the dwelling; rather, all the blame belongs to those who plotted such things.
13:111
But the enemies of the truth, falling together with their impiety into much folly as well, do not perceive it.
13:112
因為他們不但控告肉體,也毀謗律法;
For they accuse not only the flesh, but also slander the law;
13:113
然而,若肉體是邪惡的,那律法便是良善的;
and yet, if the flesh is wicked, the law is good;
13:114
因為它與肉體交戰、相對抗;
for it wars against it and opposes it;
13:115
但若律法不是良善的,那肉體便是良善的;
but if the law is not good, then the flesh is good;
13:116
for according to them it fights against it and makes war.
13:117
那麼,當他們引入彼此相反的事物時,怎能說二者都屬於魔鬼呢?你看見那愚昧與那不敬虔何等之大嗎?但教會的教義並非如此;她只定罪那罪,並宣告這兩個律法——每一個都是神所賜的,就是本性之律與摩西之律——都是與這罪為敵,而非與肉體為敵;
How then do they say that both belong to the devil, when they bring in things contrary to one another? Do you see how great the folly is, along with the impiety? But the doctrines of the Church are not such; rather she condemns sin alone, and declares that both laws, each given by God—both that of nature and that of Moses—are at war with this sin, not with the flesh;
13:118
for the flesh is not sin, but rather a work of God, exceedingly good, and well suited to virtue for us, if we are but watchful.
13:119
Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Do you see how great is the tyranny of vice, in that it conquers even the mind which delights in the law? For no one is able
13:120
他的意思是說——能說:罪是在我恨惡律法、離棄律法之時將我制伏的;
to say, he means, that sin subdues me while I hate the law and turn away from it;
13:121
for I delight in it and consent to it and flee for refuge to it; yet nevertheless that law was not able to save even one who fled to it, whereas Christ saved even one who fled from Him.
13:122
你看見那恩典何等的超乎尋常、豐豐富富嗎?然而使徒並沒有這樣直說;
Do you see how great is the surpassing abundance of grace? Yet the Apostle did not put it in this way;
13:123
but only having groaned aloud and lamented greatly, as in a wilderness devoid of any who might help, through his very perplexity he shows the power of Christ, and says:
13:124
誰能救我脫離這取死的身體呢?律法無力,良心不足以濟事;
Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? The law had no strength, the conscience did not suffice;
13:125
and yet I approved the good things, and not only approved, but even fought against the contrary things.
13:126
For by saying, Warring against, he showed that he too was setting himself in array against it.
13:127
Whence then shall come the hope of salvation? I thank God, he says, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
13:128
Do you see how he showed that the presence of grace was necessary, and that the good deeds are common to the Father and the Son? For even though he gives thanks to the Father, yet the Son also is the cause of this thanksgiving.
13:129
But when you hear him saying, Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? do not suppose that he is accusing the flesh.
13:130
因為他並沒有說「罪的身體」,乃是說「死的身體」;
For he did not say a body of sin, but a body of death;
13:131
就是那必死的身體,那被死所制伏的身體,而非那生出死亡的身體;
that is, the mortal body, the one that has been overpowered by death, not the one that gave birth to death;
13:132
which is a proof, not of the wickedness of the flesh, but of the outrage it has suffered.
13:133
正如有人被蠻族擄去,被說成是屬於蠻族的,並非因他是蠻族,乃是因他被他們所拘禁;
Just as, if someone taken captive by barbarians were said to belong to the barbarians, not because he is a barbarian, but because he is held fast by them;
13:134
so too the body is called one of death, because it was held fast by death, not because it procured death.
13:135
Wherefore he himself too does not wish to be delivered from the body, but from the mortal body, hinting at what I have often said, that from its having become passible it also became easily assailable by sin.
13:136
And for what reason, he says, if the tyranny of sin was so great before grace, were sinners punished? Because such things were enjoined upon them as it was possible to accomplish even while sin held sway.
13:137
因為律法並沒有牽引他們達到那最高的品行,反倒容許他們享用財富,不禁止他們娶多妻,也容他們在公義的範圍內發洩怒氣,並適度地享用歡樂;
For it did not draw them to the highest way of life, but even permitted them to enjoy wealth, and did not forbid them to have many wives, and to gratify anger together with justice, and to make use of pleasure in due measure;
13:138
and so great was the condescension, that the written law even required less than the natural law had declared.
13:139
因為本性之律吩咐一個男子始終只與一個女子結合;
For the law of nature bade one man consort continually with one woman;
13:140
which is what Christ also declared when He said, He who made them at the beginning made them male and female.
13:141
But the law of Moses neither forbade to put away the one and bring in another in her place, nor prohibited having two at the same time.
13:142
And apart from this, one may see also many other of the things contained in the law achieved by those before it, who were being trained by the law of nature.
13:143
Those, then, who lived under the Old Covenant suffered no wrong, when a legislation thus proportioned to their strength was brought in for them.
13:144
But if even so they were not able to prevail, the charge of that lies against their own slothfulness.
13:145
For this reason Paul also gives thanks, because Christ, without exacting any strict account of these things, not only did not demand a reckoning of our former deeds, but also made us fit for a greater course.
13:146
Wherefore he says, 'I thank my God through Jesus Christ.'
13:147
And having left the salvation now confessed and acknowledged, he passes on from what has already been established to something yet further, saying that we have not only been delivered from our former sins, but have also become unconquerable with respect to the future.
13:148
For 'there is now no condemnation,' he says, 'to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh.'
13:149
But he did not say this before, until he had again reminded them of their former condition.
13:150
For having first said, 'So then I myself with the mind serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin,' he then went on to add:
13:151
'There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.'
13:152
Then, since it was objected against him that many sin even after baptism, on this account he presses on to the point.
13:153
And he does not simply say, 'To them that are in Christ Jesus,' but, 'To them that walk not after the flesh.'
13:154
so that everything henceforth belongs to our own slothfulness.
13:155
For it is now possible not to walk after the flesh, whereas then it was difficult.
13:156
For he then establishes this in another way as well through what follows, saying:
13:157
'For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free.'
13:158
Here calling the Spirit 'the law of the Spirit.'
13:159
For just as he calls sin 'the law of sin,' so he calls the Spirit 'the law of the Spirit.'
13:160
And yet he called the law of Moses thus as well, saying, 'For we know that the law is spiritual.'
13:161
What then is the difference? Great and infinite.
13:162
For that one is 'spiritual,' but this one is 'the law of the Spirit.'
13:163
And in what does this differ from that? In this, that the one was merely given by the Spirit, while this one abundantly supplied the Spirit as well to those who received it.
13:164
Therefore he also called it 'the law of life,' in contrast to that one of sin, not to the Mosaic law.
13:165
For when he says, 'It hath made me free from the law of sin and of death,' he does not here mean the law of Moses.
13:166
For nowhere does he call it a law of sin.
13:167
For how could that which he has often named righteous and holy, and destructive of sin, be so called? But he means that which wars against the law of the mind.
13:168
For it was this grievous war that the grace of the Spirit dissolved, by putting sin to death, and making the contest light for us, and crowning us beforehand, and then drawing us into the wrestling-matches with much alliance and aid.
13:169
And what he always does, passing from the Son to the Spirit, and from the Spirit to the Son and the Father, and ascribing all that comes from us to the Trinity;
13:170
this he does here as well.
13:171
For having said, 'Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?' he showed the Father doing this through the Son.
13:172
Then again the Holy Spirit together with the Son.
13:173
For 'the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free,' he says.
13:174
Then again the Father and the Son.
13:175
'For what the law could not do,' he says, 'in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.'
13:176
Again he seems to be disparaging the law.
13:177
But if one attends carefully, he even exceedingly commends it, showing it to be in harmony with Christ, and to have chosen the same ends.
13:178
For he did not say, 'The wickedness of the law,' but, 'What it could not do.'
13:179
And again, 'In that it was weak,' not, 'In that it did mischief,' or 'plotted evil.'
13:180
And he does not even impute the weakness to it, but to the flesh, saying:
13:181
'In that it was weak through the flesh.'
13:182
Here again calling 'flesh' not the substance itself and the material subject, but the more carnal mind; by which words he acquits both the body and the law of the accusation.
13:183
And not by these words only, but also by those that follow.
13:184
For if the law were adverse, how did Christ come to its aid, and fulfil its requirement, and stretch out His hand, condemning sin in the flesh? For this was what remained, since the law had of old already condemned sin in the soul.
13:185
What then? Did the law accomplish the greater part, and the Only-begotten of God the lesser? By no means.
13:186
For most certainly it was God who wrought that too, who gave the natural law, and added the written one.
13:187
And otherwise the greater would have been of no profit, if the lesser had not been added to it.
13:188
For what profit is there in knowing what ought to be done, if one does not go after it? None; nay, rather a greater condemnation.
13:189
So then, He who saved the soul is the same who also rendered the flesh tractable.
13:190
因為教導乃是容易的;
For to teach is easy;
13:191
but to point out also some way by which these things could easily be accomplished, this is the wonderful thing.
13:192
And it was for this that the Only-begotten came, and did not depart before He had freed us from that difficulty.
13:193
And what is indeed the greater thing, the manner of the victory.
13:194
For He did not take other flesh, but this very same flesh that was worn down.
13:195
As if a man, seeing in the marketplace a mean and common woman being beaten, being himself a king's son, should declare himself to be her son, and thus deliver her from those who were maltreating her.
13:196
Which is what He Himself did, both confessing to be the Son of Man, and standing by her, and condemning sin.
13:197
It no longer dared, therefore, to strike her; or rather it did strike her, with the stroke of death.
13:198
But by this very act there was condemned and destroyed, not the flesh that was struck, but the flesh that struck.
13:199
which is the most wonderful of all.
13:200
For if the victory had not come about in the flesh, it would not have been so wonderful, since the law too accomplished this.
13:201
But the wonderful thing is that the trophy was set up together with the flesh, and that she who had ten thousand times been cast down by sin, this very one raised up a brilliant victory over it.
13:202
For see how many paradoxical things have come to pass;
13:203
其一,罪未能勝過肉體;
one, that sin did not conquer the flesh;
13:204
其二,罪竟被制伏,而且是被她所制伏;
another, that it was even conquered, and conquered by her;
13:205
for it is not the same thing not to be conquered, and to conquer her who was ever casting one down.
13:206
其三,她不僅得了勝,而且還施行了懲罰;
Third, that she not only conquered, but also punished;
13:207
因為藉著不犯罪,她便未被制伏;
for by not sinning she was not conquered;
13:208
but by dying she conquered and condemned it, showing to it the flesh to be fearful, which formerly had been contemptible.
13:209
Thus, at any rate, He both dissolved its power, and abolished the death that had been brought in through it.
13:210
因為當死抓住罪人的時候,它是按著公義的原則帶進終局;
For so long as it took hold of sinners, it brought in death according to the principle of justice;
13:211
but when it found a sinless body and delivered it up to death, it was condemned as having committed injustice.
13:212
Do you see how many triumphs there were: that the flesh was not vanquished by sin; that it even conquered and condemned it; that it did not simply condemn it, but condemned it as having sinned? For having first convicted it of having done wrong, He thus condemned it, not simply by strength and authority, but also by the principle of justice.
13:213
For this is what he showed when he said, concerning sin:
13:214
他在肉體中定了罪的罪案;
He condemned sin in the flesh;
13:215
as though he were saying that, having convicted it of having greatly sinned, he then also passed sentence upon it.
13:216
你豈不看見,被定罪的處處是罪,並非肉體,反倒肉體還得了冠冕,並且對罪宣告了判決嗎?但他若說神差遣兒子成為罪身的形狀,你不可因此就以為那肉體是別一種肉體;
Do you see how everywhere it is sin that is condemned, not the flesh — indeed the flesh is even crowned, and pronounces the sentence against sin? But if he says that God sent the Son in the likeness of flesh, do not on that account suppose that that flesh was another kind of flesh;
13:217
for since he said 'of sin,' on that account he also added 'the likeness.'
13:218
For Christ did not have sinful flesh, but flesh like indeed to our sinful flesh, yet sinless, and in nature the same as ours.
13:219
So that from this too it is plain that the nature of the flesh was not evil.
13:220
因為基督既沒有取別的肉體來代替先前的,也沒有將這同一肉體按本質加以改變,就這樣使它重新奮戰得勝;
For Christ, neither by taking another flesh in place of the former, nor by changing this same flesh in its very substance, thus prepared it to fight the battle anew;
13:221
乃是任憑它存留在同一本性中,使它勝過罪而戴上冠冕;
but, allowing it to remain in the same nature, he made it bind on the crown against sin;
13:222
and then, after the victory, he raised it up and made it immortal.
13:223
有人說:『這與我何干,若這些事是在那肉體中成就的?』其實這正是與你極有關係的;
'What then,' one says, 'is this to me, if these things were done in that flesh?' Nay, it is above all to you;
13:224
That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh.
13:225
What is 'the righteous requirement'? The end, the aim, the right accomplishment.
13:226
For what did the law will, and what did it ever command? To be sinless.
13:227
如今這事已藉著基督為我們成就了;
This, then, has now been accomplished for us through Christ;
13:228
那抵擋與得勝乃是屬乎他的;
and the resisting and the prevailing belonged to him;
13:229
but the enjoying of the victory is ours.
13:230
We shall not sin then any more, we shall not sin — unless we be exceedingly slack and supine.
13:231
'To those who walk not according to the flesh.'
13:232
因為恐怕你聽見基督已救你脫離罪的爭戰,並且律法的義既在肉體中定了罪就已在你身上成全,你便鬆懈了一切的操練;
For lest, upon hearing that Christ has delivered you from the war of sin, and that the righteous requirement of the law has been fulfilled in you, sin having been condemned in the flesh, you should relax all your discipline;
13:233
for this reason there too, having said 'There is therefore now no condemnation,' he added:
13:234
'To those who walk not according to the flesh;'
13:235
在這裡也是如此,他既說『使律法的義成就在我們身上』,就又加上了同一句話;
and here also, saying 'That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,' he subjoined this same thing;
13:236
or rather, not this only, but even much more.
13:237
因為他既說『使律法的義成就在我們這不隨從肉體而行的人身上』,就又加上『只隨從聖靈』;
For having said, 'That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh,' he added, 'But according to the Spirit;'
13:238
showing that it is not enough only to abstain from evil deeds, but that one must also abound in good.
13:239
因為將冠冕賜給你,是屬乎他的;
For the giving you of the crown was his;
13:240
but the keeping of what was given is yours.
13:241
For that which was the righteous requirement of the law — namely, not to become liable to the curse — this Christ accomplished for you.
13:242
Do not, then, betray so great a gift, but continue guarding this goodly treasure.
13:243
For here he shows you that the washing does not suffice for our salvation, unless after the washing we display a life worthy of the gift.
13:244
So that again he pleads on behalf of the law by saying these things.
13:245
In order to be obedient to Christ, one must do and labor at everything, so that his righteous requirement which Christ fulfilled may remain in us, and not be destroyed.
13:246
他說:因為隨從肉體的人,體貼肉體的事;
For those who are according to the flesh, he says, mind the things of the flesh;
13:247
but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
13:248
For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.
13:249
原來體貼肉體的,就是與神為仇;
Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God;
13:250
因為它不服神的律法;
for it does not submit itself to the law of God;
13:251
But neither is this an accusation against the flesh.
13:252
因為只要它守住自己本分的地位,就沒有甚麼不合宜的事發生;
For so long as it keeps its own proper rank, nothing amiss occurs;
13:253
but when we surrender everything to it, and it, overstepping its own bounds, rises up against the soul, then it ruins and corrupts all things — not by reason of its own nature, but by reason of the excess and the disorder that springs from it.
13:254
隨從聖靈的人,體貼聖靈的事;
But those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit;
13:255
for the mind of the flesh is death.
13:256
他沒有說『肉體的本性』,也沒有說『身體的本質』,乃是說『那體貼的心思』;
He did not say, 'The nature of the flesh,' nor 'The substance of the body,' but 'The mind;'
13:257
which can be corrected and done away with.
13:258
And he says this, not by attributing to the flesh a reasoning of its own — far from it — but by pointing to the grosser impulse of the mind, and naming it from the worse element, just as he is also wont often to call the whole man, having soul and all, 'flesh.'
13:259
'But the mind of the Spirit.'
13:260
Here again he means the spiritual understanding, just as further on too he says, 'But he who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit;'
13:261
and he shows the many good things that come from it, both in the present and in the world to come.
13:262
因為那屬肉體的心思所引進的諸般惡事,屬靈的心思卻供給遠更多的美善;
For than the evils which the carnal mind brings in, the spiritual mind furnishes far more good things;
13:263
這是他藉著說『生命與平安』所指明的;
which he showed by saying, 'Life and peace;'
13:264
『生命』一詞是與前者相對而言的;
the one in contrast with the former;
13:265
因為他說,體貼肉體的就是死;
For the mind, he says, of the flesh is death;
13:266
『平安』一詞則是與下文相對而言的;
and the other in contrast with what follows;
13:267
for having said 'Peace,' he added, 'Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God;'
13:268
which is worse than death.
13:269
Then, showing how it is both death and enmity:
13:270
'For it does not submit itself to the law of God,' he says;
13:271
但你聽見『因為它也是不能服的』這話時,不要驚惶;
But be not troubled at hearing, 'For neither indeed can it;'
13:272
for indeed this difficulty has an easy solution.
13:273
因為他在這裡所說『體貼肉體的心思』,乃是指那屬地的、粗鈍的思慮,就是熱衷於今生之事並惡行的那種;
For by 'the mind of the flesh' he here means the earthly reasoning, the gross one, that which is fluttered after the things of this life and after wicked deeds;
13:274
this, he says, it is impossible should be subjected to God.
13:275
『那麼,若一個惡人不可能變為善的,還有甚麼得救的指望呢?』他所說的並不是這意思;
'And what hope of salvation is left, then, if it be impossible for one that is evil to become good?' He does not say this;
13:276
不然,保羅怎能成為那樣的人呢?那強盜怎能?瑪拿西怎能?尼尼微人怎能?大衛跌倒了,怎能自己回轉?彼得三次不認主,怎能重新振作?那犯了淫亂的,怎能再被列入基督的羊群?加拉太人從恩典中墜落了,怎能回轉到先前尊貴的地位?可見他所說的,並不是惡人不可能變為善的,乃是說:人若仍舊存留在惡中,就不可能服神;
since how did Paul become such as he was? how the robber? how Manasseh? how the Ninevites? how did David, when fallen, recover himself? how did Peter, when he had denied, raise himself up again? how was he who had committed fornication numbered again in the flock of Christ? how did the Galatians, who had fallen from grace, return to their former nobility? So then he does not say this, that it is impossible for the wicked man to become good, but that it is impossible, while remaining wicked, to be subjected to God;
13:277
yet if he change, it is easy for him to become good and to be subjected.
13:278
因為他並沒有說人不能服神,乃是說那惡行不能成為善的;
For he did not say that man cannot be subjected to God, but that the wicked deed cannot be good;
13:279
Fornication cannot be chastity, nor can vice be virtue.
13:280
Which very thing he says also in the Gospel: 'A corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit' — not forbidding the change from vice to virtue, but saying that continuance in vice cannot bear good fruit.
13:281
因為他並沒有說『壞樹不能變為好樹』,乃是說它若仍舊是壞的,就不能結出好果子;
For he did not say, 'An evil tree cannot become good,' but that it cannot bear good fruit while remaining evil;
13:282
since that it is indeed possible for it to be changed, he showed both here and from another parable, when he introduces the tares becoming wheat.
13:283
因此祂也禁止把它們連根拔起;
For this reason He also forbids them to be rooted up;
13:284
祂說:「恐怕你們薅稗子,連麥子也一同拔出來」;
'Lest,' He says, 'while you gather them up, you also pluck up the wheat with them';
13:285
that is, the wheat which is destined to spring forth from them.
13:286
By 'the mind of the flesh,' then, he means wickedness, and by 'the mind of the Spirit' he means the grace that has been given and the working that is judged by a good disposition of will; nowhere here discoursing about hypostasis or substance, but about virtue and vice.
13:287
'For what you were not able to accomplish under the Law,' he says, 'this you will now be able to do—to walk uprightly and without stumbling—if you lay hold of the Spirit's help.'
13:288
隨從肉體而行,卻必須也照著聖靈而行;
to walk according to the flesh, but one must also walk according to the Spirit;
13:289
since it is not sufficient for our salvation merely to turn away from evil, but we must also do good.
13:290
And this will come to pass if we surrender the soul to the Spirit and persuade the flesh to acknowledge its proper rank.
13:291
因為如此我們也必使肉體本身成為屬靈的;
For thus we shall make the flesh itself spiritual;
13:292
just as, on the other hand, if we are slothful, we shall make even the soul carnal.
13:293
For since it was not by the necessity of nature that He implanted the gift, but committed it to the freedom of choice, it rests henceforth with you both to become this and to become that.
13:294
因為凡出於祂的一切都已完全成就;
For all that comes from Him has been perfectly accomplished;
13:295
for sin no longer wars against the law of our mind, nor takes us captive as before, but all those things have ceased and are dissolved, and the passions crouch down, fearing and trembling before the grace of the Spirit.
13:296
But if you quench the light, cast out the charioteer, and drive away the pilot, then reckon the tempest henceforth to your own account.
13:297
That virtue has now become easier, and that for this reason there is a great heightening of the philosophic life, learn well by considering how the affairs of men stood when the Law held sway, and how they now stand, since grace has shone forth.
13:298
For the things which formerly seemed possible to none—virginity, the contempt of death, and mastery over the other manifold passions—these are now everywhere throughout the world successfully achieved.
13:299
而且不僅在我們中間,就是在西古提人、色雷斯人、印度人、波斯人,以及其他許多蠻族中間,也都有童貞女的歌隊、殉道者的群眾、修士的團體;如今這些人的數目已多過已婚的人,加上嚴格的禁食和自願貧窮的超越;
And not only among us, but also among the Scythians and Thracians and Indians and Persians, and among many other barbarian peoples, there are choirs of virgins and hosts of martyrs and companies of monks; and these are now more numerous than the married, together with strict fasting and an excess of voluntary poverty;
13:300
things which, save for one or two, those who lived under the Law could not so much as dream of in their sleep.
13:301
Seeing, then, the truth of these facts proclaiming itself more clearly than a trumpet, do not grow soft, nor betray so great a grace.
13:302
For it is not possible, not even after faith, for one who is slothful to be saved.
13:303
For the contests are easy, that you may conquer by striving—not that you may sleep, nor that you may abuse the greatness of grace as an occasion for slothfulness, wallowing again in your former mire.
13:304
'And those who are in the flesh cannot please God.'
13:305
What then? 'Shall we cut in pieces the body,' he says, 'that we may please God, and shall we depart from the flesh, and do you command us to be self-murderers while leading us to virtue?' Do you see how many absurdities are begotten, if we take what is said in a merely literal way? Here too by 'flesh' he does not mean the body, nor the substance of the body, but the fleshly and worldly life, full of luxury and dissoluteness, the life that makes the whole man to be flesh.
13:306
For just as those who are winged by the Spirit make even the body spiritual,
13:307
so those who leap away from the Spirit and are enslaved to the belly and to pleasure make even the soul flesh—not by changing its substance, but by destroying its nobility.
13:308
And this manner of expression is found in many places in the Old Testament as well, 'flesh' signifying the gross and miry life, entangled in unseemly pleasures.
13:309
'My Spirit shall not abide in these men, because they are flesh.'
13:310
然而挪亞自己也是有肉體纏身的;
And yet Noah himself also was clothed with flesh;
13:311
但那罪名並不在於他有肉體纏身;
but the charge was not this, that he was clothed with flesh;
13:312
rather, it was that the fleshly life had been done away with.
13:313
For this reason Paul too says:
13:314
「而屬肉體的人不能得神的喜悅」;
'And those who are in the flesh cannot please God';
13:315
and he added, 'But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit'—again not meaning 'flesh' simply, but flesh of this sort, the flesh dragged along by the passions, the flesh held in tyranny.
13:316
'And why then,' one asks, 'did he not put it thus, and set down the distinction?' In order to lift up the hearer, and to show that he who lives rightly will be, as it were, not even in a body.
13:317
For since it was evident to everyone that the spiritual man is not in sin, he here sets down the greater thing: that the spiritual man is not only not in sin, but is henceforth not even in the flesh, having already become from this an angel and ascended to heaven, and merely carrying about the body.
13:318
But if on this account you slander the flesh, because he calls the fleshly life by its name,
13:319
then you will likewise slander the world, since
13:320
wickedness too is on this account often called by that name, just as Christ also said to the disciples:
13:321
「你們不屬這世界」;
'You are not of this world';
13:322
and to His own brethren He said again:
13:323
'The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me.'
13:324
The soul too will be said to be alien to God, since He called those who live in error 'soulish' (natural).
13:325
But these things are not so, they are not.
13:326
For it is necessary everywhere to attend not merely to the words, but to the mind of the one speaking, and to know the exact distinction of what is said.
13:327
因為有些事物是善的,有些是惡的,有些是居中的;例如靈魂與肉體乃屬居中之列,能成為這樣,也能成為那樣;
For some things are good, some evil, and some intermediate; for instance, soul and flesh are among the intermediate things, being capable of becoming both this and that;
13:328
but the spirit belongs to the good things always, and never becomes anything else.
13:329
再者,肉體的意念——就是那邪惡的行為——乃屬那總是惡的事之列;
Again, the mind of the flesh—that is, the wicked deed—belongs to the things that are always evil;
13:330
for it is not subject to the law of God.
13:331
所以你若把你的靈魂與身體交給那更美者,你就歸入祂那一分;
If, therefore, you give over your soul and body to the better, you become of that portion;
13:332
but if again to the worse, you make yourself a partaker of the destruction here—not because of the nature of the soul and the flesh, but because of the disposition, which has authority to choose either of these.
13:333
And that these things are so, and that what has been said is no slander of the flesh, let us again take up the expression itself and examine it more accurately.
13:334
'But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit,' he says.
13:335
What then? Were they not in the flesh, but went about bodiless? And how could this have any sense? Do you see that he was hinting at the fleshly life? And why did he not say, 'But you are not in sin'? That you may learn that Christ has not only quenched the tyranny of sin, but has also made the flesh lighter and more spiritual—not by changing its nature, but rather by giving it wings.
13:336
For just as when fire comes into contact with iron, the iron too becomes fire while remaining in its own nature,
13:337
照樣,在那些擁有聖靈的信徒身上,肉體此後也被轉移到那運行中,全然成為屬靈的,各方面都被釘十字架,並與靈魂一同展翅飛升;
so also, in the case of the faithful who possess the Spirit, the flesh is henceforth transferred to that working, becoming wholly spiritual, crucified on every side and taking wing together with the soul;
13:338
such as was also the body of him who spoke these words.
13:339
Therefore he laughed to scorn all luxury and pleasure, but reveled in hunger and scourgings and prisons, and felt no pain even while suffering these things.
13:340
「因為我們這至暫至輕的苦楚」;
'For our momentary light affliction';
13:341
so well had he trained even the flesh to run together with the spirit.
13:342
'If indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.'
13:343
This word 'if indeed' he sets down in many places not as one doubting, but even as one firmly believing, and in the sense of 'seeing that' (since), as when he says:
13:344
「既然神看為義,就必將患難報應那加患難給你們的人」;
'If indeed it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you';
13:345
and again, 'You suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it be even in vain.'
13:346
'But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ.'
13:347
He did not say, 'But if you do not have,' but he put forward the painful matter in the persons of others.
13:348
'This one is not His,' he says.
13:349
Again, [he sets] Christ before them.
13:350
那令人痛心的部分是簡短而有節制的;
And the painful part is brief and moderate;
13:351
but the desirable part comes from both sides and through many things, so as to cast the other into shadow.
13:352
And this he said, not calling the Spirit 'Christ'—God forbid!—but showing that he who has the Spirit not only is called Christ's, but also possesses Christ Himself.
13:353
For it is not possible, when the Spirit is present, that Christ should not also be present.
13:354
For wherever one Person of the Trinity is present, there the whole Trinity is present; for it is undivided within itself, and united with all exactness.
13:355
for it is inseparable within itself, and is united with all exactness.
13:356
And what shall come to pass, he says, if Christ be in you? 'The body indeed is dead because of sin;'
13:357
'but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.'
13:358
You have seen how many evils come from not having the Holy Spirit: death, enmity toward God, the inability to please His laws, the not being Christ's as one ought, the not having Him dwelling within.
13:359
Consider then also how many good things come from having the Spirit:
13:360
the being Christ's, the having Christ Himself, the vying with the angels.
13:361
For this is to mortify the flesh: to live an immortal life, to have even now the pledges of the resurrection, and to run the race of virtue with ease.
13:362
因為他並未只說身體從此對罪停工不動,乃是說它甚至要成為死的;
For he did not say merely that the body should henceforth be idle from sin, but that it should even be dead;
13:363
thereby heightening the ease of the race.
13:364
And without troubles and toils such a one is henceforth crowned.
13:365
For this reason too he added 'to sin,' that you might learn that he did away with the wickedness, and not the nature of the body once for all.
13:366
were this to happen, many of the things able to profit the soul would also be done away with.
13:367
This, then, is not what he means; rather, he wills that while living and abiding it should be dead.
13:368
For this is a sign of having the Son, of the Spirit's being in us: that our bodies differ in no way from the bodies lying in the tomb, as regards the working of the body.
13:369
但你聽見「治死」時不要懼怕;
But do not be afraid on hearing of mortification;
13:370
for you have the true life, which no death shall ever succeed in overtaking.
13:371
因為聖靈的生命正是如此;
For such is the life of the Spirit;
13:372
it no longer yields to death, but consumes death and does away with it, and whatever it has received it keeps immortal.
13:373
Therefore, having said that the body is dead, he did not say that the Spirit is living, but that it is life, to show that it is able to bestow this even on others.
13:374
接著,他再次緊緊抓住聽者,說出這生命的緣由與明證;
Then, again tightening his hold on the hearer, he states both the cause of the life and the proof of it;
13:375
and this is righteousness.
13:376
因為哪裡沒有罪,哪裡也就不見死亡;
For where sin is not, neither does death appear;
13:377
and where death does not appear, life is indissoluble.
13:378
'But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He that raised up the Lord will also quicken your mortal bodies, because of His Spirit that dwells in you.'
13:379
Again he sets in motion the discourse concerning the resurrection, since this hope especially anointed the hearer, and he confirms him from what happened in the case of Christ.
13:380
他說,不要因你披戴著必死的身體而懼怕;
For do not be afraid, he says, that you are clothed about with a dead body;
13:381
have the Spirit, and it shall assuredly rise again.
13:382
What then? Do bodies that do not have the Spirit not rise again? And how must all stand before the judgment seat of Christ? And how shall the word concerning hell be trustworthy? For if those who do not have the Spirit do not rise, then neither will there be a hell.
13:383
What then is meant? All indeed shall rise, but not all unto life; rather, some unto punishment, and some unto life.
13:384
為此他不說「祂要使之復活」,乃說「祂要使之活過來」;
For this reason he did not say 'He shall raise up,' but 'He shall quicken;'
13:385
which was something more than the resurrection, and granted to the righteous alone.
13:386
And setting down the cause of so great an honor, he added, saying, 'Because of His Spirit that dwells in you.'
13:387
So that if, while you are here, you drive away the grace of the Spirit, and depart not having it intact, you shall assuredly perish, even though you rise again.
13:388
For just as He will not endure, when He sees His Spirit shining in you at that time, to deliver you over to punishment, so also He will not consent, when He sees it quenched, to lead you into the bridal chamber, even as neither did He those virgins.
13:389
所以你不要容許身體如今活著,好叫它到那時得以活著;
Do not, therefore, permit the body to live now, that it may live then;
13:390
make it to die, that it may not die.
13:391
因為它若存留活著,就必不得活;
For if it remains living, it will not live;
13:392
but if it die, then it will live.
13:393
這在那普世性的復活上也是如此;
This also happens in the case of the resurrection at large;
13:394
for it must first die and be buried, and then become immortal.
13:395
這在洗禮的水池中也已發生;
This also took place in the laver of baptism;
13:396
for at all events the former self was crucified and buried, and then was raised up.
13:397
這在主的身體上也是如此;
This also happened in the case of the Lord's body;
13:398
for that too was crucified and buried, and then rose again.
13:399
所以,我們也當如此行;
This then let us also do;
13:400
let us mortify it continually in the works themselves.
13:401
I do not mean the substance—God forbid!—but the impulses toward wicked deeds.
13:402
For this too is life; nay rather, this alone is life: to endure nothing merely human, nor to be enslaved to pleasures.
13:403
For he who has subjected himself to these can no longer even live, because of the despondencies that arise from them, and the fears, and the dangers, and the swarm of countless passions.
13:404
因為若料想死亡臨近,他就在死亡之前先因懼怕而死了;
For if death is expected, he has died before death through fear;
13:405
and if he suspects sickness, or insult, or poverty, or any other of the unlooked-for things, he is undone and destroyed.
13:406
What then could be more wretched than such a life? But he who lives by the Spirit is not so; rather, he stands superior to fears and grief and dangers and all change—not by suffering nothing, but by that which is far greater, by despising these very things even as they assail him.
13:407
但這要如何成就呢?就是若聖靈完全住在我們裡面;
But how shall this be? If the Spirit dwells wholly within us;
13:408
for neither did he simply say that it dwells for a little while, but that it dwells within continually.
13:409
For this reason he did not say 'the Spirit that dwelt in,' but 'that dwells in,' indicating its perpetual abiding.
13:410
So then, he who has been mortified to the world is most of all alive.
13:411
'The Spirit is life because of righteousness.'
13:412
And that what is said may become clearer, let us bring forward two men: the one
13:413
沉溺於放蕩、宴樂與今生的迷惑之中;
given over to profligacies and pleasures and the deceit of this life;
13:414
另一個則向這些事已被治死;
and the other mortified to these things;
13:415
and let us see which is the more truly alive.
13:416
假設這二人中的一個極其富有且顯赫,供養著食客與諂媚之徒,且讓他整日耗費於此,狂歡縱飲,酩酊大醉;
For let one of these two be exceedingly rich and distinguished, feeding parasites and flatterers, and let him spend the whole day upon this, reveling and carousing in drunkenness;
13:417
而讓另一個與貧窮、禁食,以及其餘刻苦嚴謹的操練與屬靈的智慧為伴,只在晚間才取用必需的食物,或者,你若願意,就讓他甚至禁食兩三天;
and let the other live with poverty and fasting and the rest of a hard and austere and philosophic discipline, partaking in the evening only of the food that is necessary, or, if you will, let him even remain without food for two or three days;
13:418
那麼這二人中,哪一個對我們才是最真活著的呢?我深知眾人必看重那一個——就是那蹦跳雀躍、揮霍自己財物的人;
which then of these two shall be for us the one that is most truly alive? The many, I well know, will esteem that one—the man who leaps and squanders his own goods;
13:419
but we esteem the other, the one who enjoys due measure.
13:420
那麼,既然此刻有一場爭辯與較量,讓我們進到各人的家中,並且就在那富人於你看來最是活著的時刻,正當他縱情享樂之際,我們也進去察看這二人各處於何等光景;
Since then there is for the time being a contest and rivalry, let us enter into the houses of each, and then, at the very moment when the rich man seems to you most of all to be living, in the very season of his luxury, let us also go in and observe in what state each of these two is;
13:421
for both the living man and the dead are made manifest by their deeds.
13:422
如此,我們將發現那一個正埋首於書卷之中,或在禱告與禁食裡,或在其他某件必要之事上儆醒守望、謹慎自守、與神交談;
So then, the one we shall find to be occupied with books, or in prayer and fasting, or watchful over some other of the necessary things, and sober, and conversing with God;
13:423
但那沉溺於醉酒之中的人,我們必看見他的光景不比死屍好多少;
But the man baptized under drunkenness we shall see disposed no better than a corpse;
13:424
我們若逗留到傍晚,便要看見這死亡更沉重地臨到他身上,隨後又有睡眠接替而來;
and if we tarry until evening, we shall behold this death coming upon him yet more heavily, and then again sleep succeeding it in turn;
13:425
but the other man, sober and awake even in the night —
13:426
Which then shall we say is more truly alive: the man who lies senseless and is set forth as a laughing-stock to all,
13:427
還是那忙於行事、與神交談的人呢?因為你若走近前一個人,向他說些要緊的事,你必聽不見他發出一言,正如你聽不見死人說話一樣;
or the man who is active and holds converse with God? For if you approach that first man and speak to him of some necessary matter, you will hear no utterance from him, just as you would hear none from a dead man;
13:428
but this other man, whether you desire to be with him by night or by day, you will see rather an angel than a man, and you will hear him philosophizing about the things that are in heaven.
13:429
Do you see that the one lives beyond the living, while the other lies in a state more pitiable even than the dead? Even if he seems to be active, he sees one thing for another, and resembles the mad — or rather he is more wretched than they.
13:430
因為若有人辱罵瘋人,我們眾人都憐憫那受辱的,並責備那施辱的;
For if someone should insult the mad, we all pity him who is insulted and rebuke him who insults;
13:431
but as for this man, even if we see someone trampling upon him, not only are we not moved to pity, but we even condemn him as he lies there.
13:432
那麼請告訴我,這是生命嗎?豈不是比萬死更為悲慘嗎?你看見了嗎?那縱情逸樂的人不但是死的,且比死屍更壞,比被鬼附的人更可憐?因為被鬼附的人受人憐憫,這人卻遭人憎恨;
Is this then, tell me, life? Is it not something more grievous than ten thousand deaths? Do you see that the man given to luxury is not only dead, but worse than a corpse, and more wretched than one possessed by a demon? For the latter is pitied, but the former is hated;
13:433
and the one enjoys forgiveness, but the other pays a penalty for the maladies from which he suffers.
13:434
But if outwardly he is thus ridiculous, having putrid spittle and breathing out the stench of wine, consider the wretched soul buried in such a body as in a tomb, in what condition it is likely to be.
13:435
For it is possible to behold something like this: as if one should contrive, with much licence, to set a barbarous, foul, and unclean serving-maid to trample upon and outrage a girl who is orderly, chaste, free-born, noble, and beautiful.
13:436
Who then among those who have sense would not choose to die ten thousand times rather than to live one such day? For even if, when day comes, having risen from that farce he seems to be sober, not even then does he enjoy pure sobriety, while that cloud from the tempest of drunkenness still stands before his eyes.
13:437
But even if one should grant that he becomes purely sober, what is the profit? For this sobriety is of no use to him, except to see his accusers.
13:438
因為當他行事羞恥之時,他至少得著這一點,就是不覺得那些嘲笑他的人;
For while he behaves shamefully, he gains at least this, that he does not perceive those who laugh at him;
13:439
but when day comes, he loses even this consolation, perceiving the servants murmuring, his wife ashamed, his friends reproaching, and his enemies laughing him to scorn.
13:440
還有甚麼比這樣的生命更可憐呢——白日被眾人譏笑,傍晚又照樣行羞恥的事?但如今怎樣呢?你願我們把貪婪的人帶到眾人中間麼?因為這又是另一種醉,且是更為嚴重的醉;
What could be more pitiable than this life — to be laughed at by all in the daytime, and again at evening to behave shamefully in the same way? But what then? Do you wish us to bring the covetous into the midst? For this again is another drunkenness, and a more grievous one;
13:441
and if it is drunkenness, it is also altogether a death far worse than that other, since the drunkenness too is more grievous.
13:442
因為醉於酒,並不像醉於錢財的貪慾那般可怕;
For it is not so terrible to be drunk with wine as with the desire of riches;
13:443
for there the harm halts at
13:444
所受之苦,終於昏迷麻木,並止於醉者本身的敗亡;
the affliction, and ends in insensibility and in the ruin of the drunkard himself;
13:445
but here the injury passes over to ten thousand souls, kindling from every side wars of every kind.
13:446
Come then, let us compare this man too with that one, and let us see in what respects he shares with him, and in what respects again he surpasses him, and let us today make a comparison of the drunken.
13:447
因為那蒙福、靠聖靈而活的人,這些人今後就連與他相比也不配,只能彼此相較;
For with that blessed man, who lives by the Spirit, let these henceforth not even be compared, but let them be examined against one another;
13:448
and let us again bring the table into the midst — the table laden with ten thousand murders.
13:449
那麼,他們在哪些方面相同、彼此相似呢?就在那疾病的本質上;
In what respects then do they share and resemble one another? In the very nature of the disease;
13:450
因為醉的形式雖然不同,一種出於酒,另一種出於錢財;
for the form of the drunkenness is different, since the one comes from wine, the other from riches;
13:451
for in like manner both are held fast by a monstrous desire.
13:452
因為那醉於酒的人,喝乾的杯越多,所渴求的也越多;
For the man drunk with wine, the more cups he drains, the more he craves;
13:453
and the man in love with riches, the more he heaps around himself, the more he kindles the flame of his desire, and prepares for himself a more grievous thirst.
13:454
And in yet another respect the lover of money surpasses him.
13:455
在哪一方面呢?就是那醉於酒的人所受的乃是合乎本性的事;
In what respect is this? That the one suffers a thing according to nature;
13:456
因為酒既是熱的,又加增人與生俱有的乾燥,故此使醉者口渴;
for wine, being hot and intensifying the innate dryness, thus makes the drunken thirsty;
13:457
但那貪財的人——他為何總是渴求更多呢?為何呢?當他更加富有之時,他反倒最為貧窮;
but the other — whence does he ever crave more? Whence? When he has grown richer, then most of all is he in poverty;
13:458
for this affliction is baffling, and more nearly resembles a riddle.
13:459
但你若願意,讓我們也看看他們醉後的光景;
But let us look at them, if you please, even after their drunkenness;
13:460
或者說,那愛財的人根本無法被人看見有醉後之時;
or rather, the lover of money can never be seen after his drunkenness;
13:461
so continually is he in his drunkenness.
13:462
Let us therefore look at both of them while they are in their very drunkenness, and let us consider which is the more ridiculous, and let us portray them, sketching them out again with exactness.
13:463
那麼,我們必看見那因酒而顛狂的人,到了傍晚,雖然雙眼睜開卻甚麼也看不見,只是漫無目的地被帶著四處遊蕩,撞著迎面而來的人,嘔吐、抽搐,被羞恥地脫得赤身;
We shall behold, then, the man reeling from wine, when evening has come, seeing no one though his eyes are open, but carried about at random and heedlessly, colliding with those he meets, vomiting, convulsed, and shamefully stripped;
13:464
and if wife be present, if daughter, if serving-maid, if anyone whatever, they will laugh him abundantly to scorn.
13:465
Come then, let us bring the covetous man too into the midst.
13:466
因為在他身上所發生的事,不僅是可笑的緣由,更是咒詛、烈怒、與萬千雷霆的緣由;
For here the things that happen are matter not only for laughter, but also for cursing, and much wrath, and ten thousand thunderbolts;
13:467
yet for the present let us look at the laughter.
13:468
For this man too, like that other, knows none of them all, neither friends nor enemies, and likewise, though his eyes are open, he is blinded; and just as that man sees all things as wine, so this man sees all things as money.
13:469
他的嘔吐也遠為嚴重;
And his vomiting too is far more grievous;
13:470
因為他吐出的不是食物,而是辱罵、凌辱、爭戰、殺戮的言語,將萬千雷霆從天上引到自己頭上;
for he casts up not food, but words of reviling, of insult, of wars, of deaths, drawing down from above upon his own head ten thousand thunderbolts;
13:471
醉酒之人的身體是何等青紫、鬆弛消融,那人的靈魂也是如此;
and such as is the body of the drunken man — livid and dissolving — such also is that man's soul;
13:472
or rather, not even his body itself is freed from this disease, but is rather the more seized by it, since care and wrath and sleeplessness devour it more grievously than wine, and little by little consume the whole of it.
13:473
那被酗酒所轄制的人,至少在夜間還能清醒;
And the man held fast by wine-bibbing can at least be sober during the night;
13:474
but the other is drunk continually, both by day and by night, both waking and sleeping, paying a greater penalty than any prisoner, than those who labour in the mines, and than any other punishment more grievous than these, if such there be.
13:475
那麼請告訴我,這是生命,而不是死亡麼?不,這豈不比任何死亡更為可憐麼?因為死使身體得安息,並使它脫離嘲笑、羞恥與罪;
Is this then, tell me, life, and not rather death — nay, more pitiable even than any death? For death gives the body rest, and delivers it from laughter and shame and sins;
13:476
but these drunkennesses cast a man into all these things, stopping up his ears, blinding his eyes, and holding his understanding in deep darkness.
13:477
For he can endure neither to hear nor to speak of anything else, but only of interest, and interest upon interest, and shameless gains, and hated peddling, and illiberal, slavish dealings, barking like a dog at all men, hating all, turning away from all, warring against all with no underlying cause, rising up against the poor, envying the rich, being kindly disposed toward no one.
13:478
And though he have wife, though he have children,
13:479
though he have friends, if it be not possible for him to gain from every quarter, these are to him more hostile than his natural enemies.
13:480
那麼,還有甚麼比這瘋狂更壞、更可憐呢?當一個人為自己在四面八方造出暗礁、隱石、峭壁、深谷與萬千陷坑,他明明只有一個身體、只事奉一個肚腹?若有人把公共的職役加在你身上,你便逃避,唯恐花費;
What then could be worse than this madness, what more wretched, when a man contrives for himself on every side reefs and sunken rocks and crags and ravines and ten thousand pits, though he has but one body and serves but one belly? And if someone lays public offices upon you, you flee, fearing the expense;
13:481
yet for yourself you contrive ten thousand tasks more grievous than all those, discharging for mammon services not only more costly but also more perilous, and offering to this wicked tyrant not money only, nor toil of body and torment of soul and pangs, but bringing in your very body itself — that what more may accrue to you, O wretched and miserable one, from this barbarous slavery?
13:482
你豈不看見那些每日被抬往墳墓的人,他們如何赤身、被一切所棄地被帶往那些墳墓,甚麼都不能從家中帶走,反倒連身上所穿的衣裳也帶去給蟲子?你每日看看這些人,或許你的病就會減輕——除非你要因裹屍衣的奢華,連從那景象也要發更大的瘋狂;
Do you not see those who are carried each day to the graves, how they are led away naked and bereft of all things to those tombs, able to take nothing from their home, but carrying even the very garments they wear to the worm? Look upon these each day, and perhaps your affliction will abate — unless you are going to be driven still more madly even from that sight, by the costliness of the burial-clothes;
13:483
for grievous indeed is the affliction, and terrible the disease.
13:484
For this reason we too discourse to you concerning this in every assembly, and continually pour it upon your ears, that at least by custom something more may be effected.
13:485
For not only in the day to come, but even before that day, this manifold affliction brings on many punishments.
13:486
For though I should speak of those bound in perpetual chains, though of the man nailed down by long sickness, though of him who wrestles with famine, or of any other whatsoever, I shall be able to point to none suffering such things as those who are in love with money.
13:487
因為還有甚麼比這更悲慘呢:被眾人所恨,又恨眾人,對誰都無好意,永不知足,時常乾渴,與永無止息的飢餓搏鬥——這飢餓比眾人所公認的更為嚴重——每日懷著憂愁,永不清醒,總是處在紛擾與騷亂之中?因為貪婪的人所忍受的正是這一切,甚至比這更多;
For what could be more grievous than to be hated by all, to hate all, to be kindly disposed toward no one, never to be satisfied, to thirst continually, to wrestle with a perpetual famine — one more grievous than that reckoned so by all men — to have daily griefs, never to be sober, to be always in tumults and disturbances? For all these things and more than these the covetous endure;
13:488
因為在獲利時,他們縱然囊括了眾人的財物,卻因渴求更多而毫無快樂之感;
for in gaining, even if they compass all men's goods, they perceive no pleasure, because of craving for more;
13:489
but in suffering loss, even if they lose but an obol, they consider that they have suffered things more grievous than all, and have fallen out of life itself.
13:490
那麼,還有甚麼言語能述說這些禍患呢?此地的事既是如此,你就當思想此後的事:從國度中被逐出、從地獄(欣嫩谷)而來的痛苦、永遠的捆鎖、外面的黑暗、有毒的蟲、切齒、患難、困苦、火的河流、永不熄滅的火爐;
What discourse then could set forth these evils? And if the things here are such, consider the things that come after these: the falling away from the kingdom, the anguish that comes from Gehenna, the perpetual bonds, the outer darkness, the venomous worm, the gnashing of teeth, the tribulation, the anguish, the rivers of fire, the furnaces that are never quenched;
13:491
and gathering all these together, and setting them against the pleasure of riches, tear up this disease by the roots, that having received true wealth, and being delivered from this grievous poverty, you may attain both the present and the coming good things — by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
