Now I beseech you, brethren, to mark those who cause divisions
32:2
和跌人之事、與你們所學之道相違背的人;
and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned;
32:3
因為這樣的人不服事我們的主耶穌基督,只服事自己的肚腹;
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly;
32:4
and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the guileless.
32:5
Again an exhortation, and a prayer after the exhortation.
32:6
For after saying to mark those who cause divisions, and not to hearken unto them, he added:
32:7
「賜平安的神快要將撒但踐踏在你們腳下」;
'And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet';
32:8
and, 'The grace of the Lord be with you.'
32:9
但要留意他是何等溫和地勸勉,並非以謀士的身分,而是以懇求者的身分行這事,且滿懷敬重;
But observe how gently also he exhorts, doing this not in the rank of a counselor, but in the rank of a suppliant, and with much honour;
32:10
for he both called them brethren, and beseeches them.
32:11
'For I beseech you,' he says, 'brethren.'
32:12
Then he also makes them anxious, showing the craftiness of those who plot mischief.
32:13
For as though these persons were not manifest of themselves, he says:
32:14
「如今我勸你們要留意」;
'Now I beseech you to mark';
32:15
that is, to investigate with exactness, and to observe thoroughly and to search out.
32:16
Whom, tell me? Those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned.
32:17
因為這正是教會最大的傾覆之由,就是分裂;
For this above all is the overthrow of the Church, to be divided;
32:18
this is the weapon of the devil, this turns everything upside down.
32:19
For so long as the body is united, he has no strength to find an entrance, but the offense comes from the division.
32:20
But whence comes the division? From the doctrines that are contrary to the teaching of the apostles.
32:21
And whence come such doctrines? From being slaves to the belly and to the other passions.
32:22
'For they that are such,' he says, 'serve not the Lord, but their own belly.'
32:23
因此,除非有人臆造出與使徒教訓相違背的教義,否則就不會有跌人之事,也不會有分裂;
So that there would be no offenses, there would be no division, unless some doctrine were devised contrary to the apostolic teaching;
32:24
which also he made plain here in saying, 'Contrary to the doctrine.'
32:25
And he did not say, 'Which we taught,' but, 'Which ye learned,' anticipating them, and showing that they had been convinced and had heard and had accepted it.
32:26
And what shall we do to those who work such mischief? He did not say, 'Come to close quarters and fight them,' but, 'Turn away from them.'
32:27
因為他們若是出於無知或錯謬而行此事,就當加以糾正;
For if they did this out of ignorance or error, it would be needful to set them right;
32:28
but since they sin knowingly, leap away from them.
32:29
And elsewhere too he says this:
32:30
'For withdraw yourselves,' he says, 'from every brother that walketh disorderly.'
32:31
And in discoursing to Timothy about the coppersmith, he gave such an admonition, saying:
32:32
Then, holding up to ridicule those who dare such things, he tells also the cause from which they devised this division:
32:33
'For they that are such,' he says, 'serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly.'
32:34
This too he said when writing to the Philippians:
32:35
But here he seems to me to be hinting at those of the Jews, whom he is especially wont ever to reproach as gluttons.
32:36
For indeed in writing to Titus he said concerning them:
32:37
'Evil beasts, slow bellies.'
32:38
And Christ too, reproaching them on this account, says, 'You devour the houses of widows.'
32:39
The prophets also bring such accusations against them.
32:40
'For the beloved,' he says, 'grew fat and gross, and kicked.'
32:41
Therefore Moses too admonished them, saying:
32:42
'When you have eaten and drunk and are filled, remember the Lord your God.'
32:43
And in the Gospels too, when they said to Christ, 'What sign do you show us?', passing over all else, they made mention of the manna.
32:44
Thus everywhere they appear to be mastered by this passion.
32:45
How then, you who are Christ's brother, are you not ashamed to have slaves of the belly for your teachers? Such, then, is the ground of the deception; but the manner of the plot is yet another disease—flattery.
32:46
'For by fair speech,' he says, 'they deceive the hearts of the guileless.'
32:47
And well did he say, 'fair speech.'
32:48
For the flattery reaches only as far as the words.
32:49
But the mind is not so; rather, it is full of guile.
32:50
And he did not say, 'They deceive you,' but, 'the hearts of the guileless.'
32:51
And not even with this was he content, but in order to make what was said less burdensome, he says:
32:52
'For your obedience has reached to all.'
32:53
This he does, not so as to allow them to grow shameless, but forestalling them with praises and holding them in check by the multitude of witnesses.
32:54
'For it is not I alone who bear witness, but the whole world.'
32:55
他並沒有說「你們的聰明」,而是說「你們的順服」;
And he did not say 'your understanding,' but 'your obedience';
32:56
which bore witness to great meekness in them.
32:57
This too is no small praise.
32:58
Then, after the praise, comes admonition.
32:59
For lest, having freed them from the charges, he should make them more careless as though they had escaped notice, he again hints to them, saying:
32:60
'But I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple unto that which is evil.'
32:61
Do you see how he again touches them, yet without arousing suspicion? For this is the mark of one hinting that some of them had indeed been led astray.
32:62
'And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly.'
32:63
For since he had spoken of those who make divisions and offenses, he spoke of 'the God of peace,' that they might take courage concerning their deliverance from these.
32:64
For He who rejoices in this peace will destroy the things that harm it.
32:65
他並沒有說「他要制伏」,而是說更進一步的:「他要踐踏」;
And he did not say, 'He will subject,' but, what is greater, 'He will crush';
32:66
and not those men only, but also Satan, who leads them as general in such things.
32:67
且不是單說「他要踐踏」,而是「在你們腳下」;
And not simply 'He will crush,' but 'under your feet';
32:68
so that they themselves might carry off the victory and become resplendent by the trophy.
32:69
而從所提的時候,又再一次帶來安慰;
And from the mention of time too there is again consolation;
32:70
and this was at once both a prayer and a prophecy.
32:71
'The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.'
32:72
這是最強大的兵器,是攻不破的城牆,是搖撼不動的高臺;
The mightiest weapon, the wall that cannot be breached, the tower that cannot be shaken;
32:73
for he reminded them of grace, that he might make them more eager.
32:74
For if you were delivered from things far more grievous, and were delivered by grace alone,
32:75
much more shall you be delivered from the lesser things, seeing that you have both become friends and contribute your own part as well.
32:76
See how he sets down neither prayer without works, nor works without prayer.
32:77
For having testified to their obedience, he then offered prayer, showing that we need both—both what is from ourselves and what is from God—if we are to be saved with exactness.
32:78
因為不但從前如此,如今也是這樣:我們縱使偉大又蒙嘉許,仍需要那出於他的恩典;
For not only before, but even now, however great and well-approved we may be, we stand in need of the grace that is from Him;
32:79
'Timothy my fellow-worker greets you.'
32:80
Do you see again the customary commendations? 'And Lucius and Jason and Sosipater my kinsmen.'
32:81
Luke too makes mention of this Jason, and sets his manly courage before us, saying that they dragged him before the city rulers, crying out.
32:82
並且那其餘的人,也很可能都是有名望的人;
And it is likely that the others too were among the notable ones;
32:83
for he does not mention kinsmen simply, unless they were like him in piety.
32:84
'I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, greet you.'
32:85
作保羅的代筆人,這也不是微小的稱讚;
This too is no small praise, to be Paul's amanuensis;
32:86
yet he says this not to praise himself, but that he might draw from them warm love on account of his service.
32:87
'Gaius, my host and the host of the whole Church, greets you.'
32:88
Do you see what a crown he wove for him, bearing witness to such hospitality, and gathering the whole Church into that man's house? For here by 'stranger' he means the one who receives strangers, the host.
32:89
But when you hear that he was Paul's host, do not admire him for his liberality alone, but also for the exactness of his life.
32:90
For had he not been worthy of that man's virtue, Paul would never have lodged there.
32:91
For he who was zealous to surpass many of Christ's commandments would not have transgressed this law which bids us make careful inquiry into those who receive us, and lodge with worthy people.
32:92
'Erastus the steward of the city greets you, and Quartus the brother.'
32:93
他加上「本城的管家」這話,並非徒然;
Not without purpose did he add, 'the steward of the city';
32:94
乃是像他寫信給腓立比人所說的「凱撒家裡的人問你們安」,為要顯明所傳的福音甚至觸及了那些顯貴的人;
but just as he wrote to the Philippians, 'They of Caesar's household greet you,' in order to show that the preaching had laid hold even of the great,
32:95
so here too he mentions the man's rank, establishing this same point, and showing that to one who gives heed neither wealth becomes a hindrance, nor the cares of office, nor anything else of the kind.
32:96
'The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.'
32:97
Do you see whence one must begin, and where all must end? For from this he laid the foundation of the epistle, and from this he set on the roof, at once praying down upon them the mother of all good things, and reminding them of the whole benefit.
32:98
For this most of all belongs to a noble teacher: to profit not by word alone, but also by prayer
32:99
those who are being taught.
32:100
Wherefore he also said, 'But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.'
32:101
那麼,如今保羅既已離世,誰要為我們代求呢?就是這些效法保羅的人。只要我們使自己配得這樣的辯護,好叫我們不單在此聽見保羅的聲音,也能在我們前往那裡之後,得以被看為配得,親眼看見基督的勇士;
Who then will pray for us also, now that Paul is departed? These imitators of Paul. Only let us render ourselves worthy of such advocacy, that not here alone we may hear Paul's voice, but that, having departed thither, we may also be counted worthy to behold the athlete of Christ;
32:102
or rather, if we hear him here, we shall by all means see him there also, even if we do not stand near him; yet we shall by all means see him shining close to the royal throne, where the Cherubim give glory, where the Seraphim fly.
32:103
There we shall see Paul with Peter, being the chief and foremost of the choir of the saints, and we shall enjoy his genuine love.
32:104
For if, while here, he so loved men that, though it was open to him to depart and be with Christ, he chose to remain here,
32:105
much more will he there display his affection yet more warmly.
32:106
我也為此緣故愛羅馬,儘管我還能從別的方面稱讚她:從她的偉大、她的古老、她的美麗、她的眾多、她的權勢、她的富庶,以及她在戰場上的功勳;
For this reason I too love Rome, although I could praise her on other grounds as well—for her greatness, her antiquity, her beauty, her multitude, her power, her wealth, and her achievements in war;
32:107
but setting aside all else, for this reason I count her blessed: that Paul, while yet living, wrote to them, and so loved them, and being present conversed with them, and there ended his life.
32:108
For this reason the city is renowned, more on this account than for all the rest.
32:109
And like some great and mighty body, it has two shining eyes—the bodies of these saints.
32:110
Not so bright is the heaven when the sun sends forth its rays, as is the city of the Romans, sending out these two lamps to every part of the whole world.
32:111
From there Paul shall be caught up, from there Peter.
32:112
Consider and tremble at what a spectacle Rome shall behold: Paul suddenly rising from that tomb together with Peter, and being taken up to meet the Lord.
32:113
What a rose Rome sends up to Christ, with what crowns the city is encircled—these two—with what golden chains it is girded, what springs it possesses!
32:114
For these reasons I marvel at the city—not for its abundance of gold, not for its columns, not for the rest of its splendour, but for these pillars of the Church.
32:115
Who will now grant me to be poured about the body of Paul, and to be nailed to his tomb, and to behold the dust of that body—of him who filled up what was lacking of Christ, who bore the marks, who sowed the preaching everywhere? The dust of that body through which he ran everywhere; the dust of that mouth through which Christ spoke, and the light shone forth brighter than any lightning, and a voice leapt out more terrible to the demons than any thunder; through which he uttered that blessed word, saying:
32:116
'I could wish that I myself were accursed for the sake of my brethren'; through which he spoke before kings and was not ashamed; through which we came to know Paul, and through which we came to know Paul's Master. Not so fearful to us is the thunder, as that voice was to the demons.
32:117
For if his very garments made them shudder, much more his voice.
32:118
This voice led them captive in bonds; this cleansed the whole world; this dissolved diseases, cast out vice, brought back the truth; it had Christ seated within, and everywhere it went forth together with Him; and what the Cherubim were, that was the voice of Paul.
32:119
For just as He was seated upon those powers, so also was He seated upon the tongue of Paul.
32:120
For it became worthy to receive Christ, uttering only those things which were dear to Christ, and soaring to an unspeakable height like the Seraphim.
32:121
For what is loftier than that voice which says, 'I am persuaded that neither angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus'? How many wings do you think this voice has? How many eyes? For this reason he said:
32:122
'For we are not ignorant of his devices.'
32:123
For this reason the demons fled, not only hearing him when he spoke, but even seeing his garment when he was afar off.
32:124
我渴望看見那口的塵土,基督藉這口說出了偉大而不可言傳的事,且是比藉祂自己所說的更大的事;
I longed to see the dust of that mouth through which Christ spoke the great and unutterable things, and things greater than through Himself;
32:125
for just as He wrought greater things through the disciples, so also He spoke through them.
32:126
through which the Spirit gave to the world those wondrous oracles.
32:127
那口成就了何等的善事,豈有遺漏?它趕出鬼魔,赦免罪過,堵住暴君的口,塞住哲士的舌,領普世歸向神,勸化蠻族追求智慧,改變了地上一切的事;
For what good did that mouth not accomplish? It drove out demons, it loosed sins, it silenced tyrants, it stopped the tongues of philosophers, it led the world to God, it persuaded barbarians to love wisdom, it transformed all things upon the earth;
32:128
and the things in heaven also it disposed in whatever manner it willed, binding whom it willed, and loosing there according to the authority given to it.
32:129
Not only of that mouth, but of that heart also I longed to see the dust—which one would not err in calling the heart of the whole world, and the fountain of countless blessings, and the beginning and element of our life.
32:130
For the spirit of life was supplied from there to all, and was distributed to the members of Christ, not sent forth through arteries, but through the choice of good things.
32:131
這心是何等寬廣,竟能容納整座整座的城市、萬民與列邦;
So broad was this heart, that it could receive whole cities and peoples and nations;
32:132
'For my heart,' he says, 'is enlarged.'
32:133
然而,這樣寬廣的心,那使它寬闊的愛卻常常使它緊縮、受壓;
And yet, broad as it was, the love which enlarged it often constrained and pressed it;
32:134
'For out of much affliction,' he says, 'and anguish of heart I wrote to you this.'
32:135
我渴望看見那已化為塵土的心,就是為著每一個滅亡之人焦心如焚的心,為那些流產夭折的兒女再度受生產之苦的心,看見神的心(因祂說:「清心的人有福了,因為他們必得見神。」);
And I desired to see, dissolved into dust, that heart which was on fire for each of those who were perishing, which travailed a second time over the children who were being untimely cast off, which beheld God (for 'the pure in heart,' He says, 'shall see God');
32:136
那已成為祭物的心(因為「神所要的祭,就是憂傷的靈。」);
that heart which had become a sacrifice (for 'a sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit');
32:137
那高過諸天、闊過普世、比日光更明亮、比火更炙熱、比金剛石更堅固、湧出江河的心;
that heart higher than the heavens, wider than the world, brighter than the sunbeam, hotter than fire, more solid than adamant, that sent forth rivers;
32:138
因主說:「從他腹中要流出活水的江河來。」;
'For rivers,' He says, 'of living water shall flow out of his belly';
32:139
那裡有湧流的泉源,所澆灌的不是地面,乃是人的靈魂;
where was the spring that leaped up, watering not the face of the earth, but the souls of men;
32:140
從那裡出來的,不只是江河,還有眼淚的泉源,晝夜不息;
whence not rivers only, but even fountains of tears went forth, both by night and by day;
32:141
that heart which lived the new life, not this life of ours (for 'I live,' he says, 'yet no longer I, but Christ lives in me.'
32:142
如此說來,保羅的心就是基督的心,是聖靈的碑版,是恩典的冊子);
So then the heart of Paul was the heart of Christ, and a tablet of the Holy Spirit, and a book of grace);
32:143
那為別人的罪過而戰兢的心(因他說:「我為你們害怕,惟恐我在你們身上是枉費了工夫。」;「我只怕你們的心或偏於邪,失去那向基督所存純一清潔的心,就像蛇用詭詐誘惑了夏娃一樣。」;「我怕我再來的時候,見你們不合我所想望的。」);
that heart which trembled indeed for the sins of others (for 'I am afraid,' he says, 'lest somehow I have laboured in vain over you'; 'Lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve'; 'Lest somehow, when I come, I find you not such as I wish');
32:144
至於為自身,卻是又懼怕又壯膽(因他說:「我是攻克己身,叫身服我,恐怕我傳福音給別人,自己反被棄絕了。」;
but for itself both fearing and taking courage (for 'I am afraid,' he says, 'lest somehow, having preached to others, I myself should become a castaway';
32:145
and, 'For I am persuaded that neither angels nor principalities shall be able to separate us'); that heart which was accounted worthy to love Christ as no other ever loved Him, which despised death and hell, and was crushed by the tears of the brethren (for 'What do you mean,' he says, 'weeping and breaking my heart?'); that most enduring heart, which could not bear to be parted from the Thessalonians even for the space of an hour.
32:146
我渴望看見那雙戴著鎖鏈之手的塵土,藉著按手,聖靈得以供應,藉著這雙手,這些書信得以寫成;
I longed to see the dust of those hands that were in chains, through which the Spirit of the laying-on was supplied, through which these letters were written;
32:147
因他說:「請看我親手寫給你們的字是何等的大。」;
'For see,' he says, 'with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand';
32:148
and again, 'The salutation of Paul with my own hand'—of those hands which the viper saw and fell off into the fire.
32:149
I longed to see the dust of those eyes that were nobly blinded, that recovered sight for the salvation of the whole world, that were counted worthy to behold Christ even in the body, that saw earthly things and yet saw them not, that beheld the things unseen, that knew no sleep, that kept vigil in the dead of night, that suffered nothing of what those with diseased eyes suffer.
32:150
I longed also to see the dust of those feet that ran round the whole world and grew not weary, that were bound in the stocks when the prison was shaken, that went about the world and even the uninhabited parts, that journeyed many times.
32:151
何必逐一細說呢?我渴望看見那墳墓,就是安放公義兵器、光明兵器之處,安放那些如今雖已死去卻仍活著之肢體之處;
And what need is there to speak in detail? I longed to see the tomb where the weapons of righteousness are laid up, the weapons of light, the members that now live, though put to death;
32:152
the members in which, while he lived, Christ lived in them all, the members crucified to the world, the members of Christ, clothed with Christ, the temple of the Spirit, the holy building, bound to the Spirit, nailed fast by the fear of God, bearing the marks of Christ.
32:153
這身體作了那城的城牆——比任何高塔、比萬重城郭更堅固——與它一同的,還有彼得的身體;
This body walls in that city—a body safer than any tower and than ten thousand ramparts—and with it the body of Peter;
32:154
'For I went up to visit Peter.'
32:155
For this reason, when he had departed, grace deemed him worthy to make him share the same dwelling with Peter.
32:156
I longed to see the spiritual lion.
32:157
For just as a lion casting fire among herds of foxes, so he fell upon the faction of the demons and the philosophers, and like the stroke of a thunderbolt he crashed down upon the phalanxes of the devil.
32:158
For neither did the devil stand against him in battle array, but so feared and trembled that, if he saw so much as his shadow and heard his voice, he fled far away.
32:159
如此,他雖在遠處,卻把那行淫的人交給魔鬼,隨後又從魔鬼手中把他奪回;
Thus, though he was far off, he delivered over to him the fornicator, and again snatched him out of that one's hands;
32:160
thus also others, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
32:161
你且看他如何率領那些歸在他麾下的人出戰,激勵他們、為他們抹油上陣;
But consider how he leads out into battle also those who were ranged under him, rousing and anointing them for the contest;
32:162
and now to the Ephesians he says:
32:163
「因我們並不是與屬血氣的爭戰,乃是與那些執政的、掌權的爭戰。」;
'Our wrestling is not against blood and flesh, but against the principalities and the powers';
32:164
then he also sets the prize in the heavenly places, saying:
32:165
他說:「因我們所爭的不是地上的事,乃是諸天並天上的事。」;
'For our contest is not concerning earthly matters,' he says, 'but concerning the heavens and the things in the heavens';
32:166
and now to others he says, 'Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more things pertaining to this life?' Considering therefore all these things, let us stand nobly.
32:167
因為保羅也是人,與我們有同樣的性情,其餘一切也都與我們相同;
For Paul too was a man, sharing the same nature as ourselves, and having all other things in common;
32:168
but because he displayed great love toward Christ, he transcended the heavens and stood with the angels.
32:169
So then, if we too are willing to rouse ourselves a little, and to kindle that fire within us, we shall be able to emulate that holy man.
32:170
For otherwise, if this were impossible, he would not have cried aloud, saying:
32:171
'Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ.'
32:172
因此,我們不可單單驚嘆他,也不可只是稱奇,還要效法他,好叫我們也蒙算為配,於離世之後得見他,並同享那不可言傳的榮耀;
Let us not, then, merely marvel at him, nor only be astonished, but let us also imitate him, that we too may be counted worthy, when we depart hence, to behold him, and to partake of the unspeakable glory;
32:173
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, and honour, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
