36:36
Nevertheless, let Homer be supposed to be not later than the Trojan events, but to belong to that very period of the war, and even to have campaigned together with those around Agamemnon, and, if anyone wishes, even to have lived before the discovery of letters. For the aforesaid Moses will be shown to have lived very many years before the capture of Ilium itself, and far more ancient than the founding of Ilium and than Tros and Dardanus. And for the sake of demonstration I will use as witnesses the Chaldaeans, the Phoenicians, and the Egyptians. And what need have I to say more? For he who undertakes to persuade must make the accounts of matters to his hearers more concise. Berossus, a Babylonian man, priest of Belus among them, who lived in the time of Alexander, having arranged for Antiochus, the third after him, the history of the Chaldaeans in three books, and having set forth the affairs concerning the kings, narrates of a certain one among them, named Nebuchadnezzar, who campaigned against the Phoenicians and the Jews—which things we know to have been proclaimed through our prophets, having come to pass much later than the age of Moses, and seventy years before the supremacy of the Persians. And Berossus is a most competent man; and a proof of this is Juba, who, writing On the Assyrians, says he learned the history from Berossus. And there are two books by him On the Assyrians.
