Οὐκ ἀγνοεῖν δὲ ἄξιον ὡς καὶ αὐτὸν ἐκεῖνον τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ σωτῆρος Πιλᾶτον, κατὰ Γάϊον , οὗ τοὺς χρόνους διέξιμεν, τοσαύταις περιπεσεῖν κατέχει λόγος συμφοραῖς ὡς ἐξ ἀνάγκης αὐτοφονευτὴν ἑαυτοῦ καὶ τιμωρὸν αὐτόχειρα γενέσθαι, τῆς θείας, ὡς ἔοικε, δίκης οὐκ εἰς μακρὸν αὐτὸν μετελθούσης. ἱστοροῦσιν Ἑλλήνων οἱ τὰς Ὀλυμπιάδας ἅμα τοῖς κατὰ χρόνους πεπραγμένοις ἀναγράψαυτες.
And it is worth not being ignorant of this also: that tradition holds that even that very Pilate, of the Saviour's time, fell — in the reign of Caius, whose times we have been recounting — into such great calamities that of necessity he became his own slayer and avenger by his own hand; divine justice, as it seems, not long afterward overtaking him. These things are recorded by those of the Greeks who set down the Olympiads together with the events of the several times.
