11:1
In his time, Clement, being trained together with him in the divine Scriptures, was becoming known at Alexandria—he who was of the same name as the one who of old had presided over the church of the Romans, a disciple of the apostles.
And he indeed by name, in the Hypotyposes (Outlines) which he composed, makes mention of Pantaenus as his teacher; and it seems to me that he hints at this same man also in the first book of his Stromateis (Miscellanies), when, indicating the more conspicuous of the apostolic succession which he had received, he says these things:
This work of mine is not a writing composed for display, but notes which I am storing up against old age, a remedy against forgetfulness, an artless image and mere sketch of those vivid and living words which I was counted worthy to hear, and of blessed and truly memorable men.
Of these men, one, the Ionian, was in Greece, another in Magna Graecia, another of them was from Coele-Syria, and another from Egypt; while others were throughout the East, one of these being of the Assyrians, and another in Palestine of Hebrew descent. But when I met the last—though in power he was indeed the first—I found rest, having hunted him out where he lay hidden in Egypt.
But these men, preserving the true tradition of the blessed teaching directly from Peter and James, from John and Paul the holy apostles—a son receiving it from his father (though few are like their fathers)—came, by God's help, even unto us, to deposit those ancestral and apostolic seeds.
