13:1
But Valerian, having not long afterward endured slavery among the barbarians, his son, becoming sole ruler, conducted himself more prudently with respect to the government, and at once by edicts relaxed the persecution against us, commanding by a rescript that those who presided over the word should freely perform their accustomed duties—which rescript runs in this manner: “The Emperor Caesar Publius Licinius Gallienus, Pious, Fortunate, Augustus, to Dionysius and Pinnas and Demetrius and the rest of the bishops. I have ordered the benefit of my bounty to be carried out throughout all the world, that they may depart from the places of worship; and for this cause ye also may use the form of my rescript, so that none may molest you. And this, which it is in your power to accomplish, has already long since been granted by me; and therefore Aurelius Cyrenius, who presides over the highest affairs, will observe this form which has been given by me.” Let these things, rendered more clearly out of the Roman tongue, be here inserted. And there is extant also another ordinance of the same emperor, which he made to other bishops, permitting them to recover the sites of the so-called cemeteries.
