ἀτὰρ καὶ παραδόξου τοιούτου. ἐπὶ τῆς Φιλίππου Καισαρείας, ἣν Πανεάδα Φοίνικες προσαγορεύουσι, φασὶ παρὰ ταῖς αὐτόθι δεικνυμέναις ἐν ταῖς ὑπωρείαις τοῦ καλουμένου Πανίου ὅρους πηγαῖς, ἐξ ὧν καὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην προχεῖσθαι, κατά τινα ἑορτῆς ἡμέραν σφάγιόν τι καταβάλλεσθαι, καὶ τοῦτο τῇ τοῦ δαίμονος δυνάμει ἀφανὲς γίνεσθαι παραδόξως, θαῦμά τε εἶναι περιβόητον τοῖς παροῦσι τὸ γινόμενον. παρόντα δ οὖν ποτὲ τοῖς πραττομένοις τὸν Ἀστύριον, καὶ τὸ πρᾶγμα καταπεπληγμένους ἰδόντα τοὺς πολλοὺς, οἰκτεῖραι τῆς πλάνης, κἄπειτα ἀνανεύσαντα εἰς οὐρανὸν ἱκετεῦσαι διὰ Χριστοῦ τὸν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸν, τὸ λαοπλάνον δαιμόνιον ἐλέγξαι καὶ παῦσαι τῆς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπάτης. ταῦτα δέ φασιν εὐξαμένου ἀθρόως τὸ ἱερεῖον ἐπιπολάσαι ταῖς πηγαῖς, οὕτω τε αὐτοῖς τὸ παράδοξον οἴχεσθαι, μηδενὸς μηκέτι θαύματος περὶ τὸν τόπον γενομένου.
And here is also such a marvel. At Caesarea Philippi, which the Phoenicians call Paneas, they say that beside the springs there shown, at the foot of the so-called Mount Panion—from which also the Jordan is said to flow forth—on a certain festival day a victim is cast in, and that this, by the power of the demon, marvellously becomes invisible, and that the thing done is a wonder famed among those present. Now Astyrius, being once present at these doings, and seeing the many struck with amazement at the thing, took pity on their error; and then, looking up to heaven, he besought through Christ the God who is over all to refute the people-deceiving demon and to make it cease from the deception of men. And they say that, when he had thus prayed, the victim suddenly floated up upon the springs, and so the marvel vanished from them, no wonder any longer occurring about the place.
這裡也有這樣一件奇事。在腓力的凱撒利亞——腓尼基人稱之為帕尼亞——據說在那裡所顯出的泉源旁，就是在那名叫帕尼翁的山麓下（約但河據說也由此流出），每逢某個節期之日，便有一隻祭牲被投入，這祭牲藉著鬼魔的能力，便奇異地隱沒不見，所行的事在在場眾人中成了一件馳名的奇蹟。有一次，亞司提利烏在場目睹這些勾當，又見眾人為此事驚駭，便憐憫他們的迷惑；於是舉目望天，藉著基督懇求那超乎萬有的神，駁倒那迷惑百姓的鬼魔，使它止息對人的欺哄。他們說，他這樣禱告之後，那祭牲忽然浮上泉面，這奇事便從他們中間消失了，那地方再沒有甚麼奇蹟發生。
