39:1
Whether then it be I or they, so we preach, and so you believed.
Having exalted the apostles and abased himself, then again having exalted himself above them—in order to work out equality (for indeed he did produce equality, showing himself to be both one who has the advantage and one who is at a disadvantage)—and having by this rendered himself worthy of credence, not even so does he leave them, but again ranks himself together with them, displaying the concord that is according to Christ.
Yet he does not do this in such a way as to seem to have flung himself upon them, but so that he too appears in the same rank.
For thus it was profitable for the preaching.
Wherefore he was likewise zealous for both: neither to seem to look down on them, nor, on account of the honor shown to them, to be made cheap in the eyes of those under his charge.
For this reason now also he puts himself on an equal footing again, saying:
Whether then it be I or they, so we preach.
From whom you wish to learn, he says, learn.
And he did not say, 'If you are unwilling to be persuaded by me, be persuaded by them,' but he both renders himself worthy of credence and says that he suffices by himself, and that they suffice by themselves.
For the difference of persons made no difference, since their dignities were equal.
And in the Epistle to the Galatians also he does this, taking them to himself, not as one in need, but saying that he too suffices.
For, he says, they who were of reputation added nothing to me;
他說:「那些有名望的,並沒有加增我甚麼」;
39:13
yet nevertheless even so I pursue concord with them:
For they gave me the right hands of fellowship, he says.
For if Paul's credibility were always going to rest in others and be confirmed by the testimony of others, his disciples would have been harmed in countless ways thereby.
It is not, then, to exalt himself that he does this, but out of fear for the Gospel.
Wherefore here also he says, placing himself on an equal footing:
Whether then it be I or they, so we preach.
Well did he say, 'We preach,' displaying his great boldness.
For not in secret nor in a corner, but we send forth a voice brighter than a trumpet.
And he did not say, 'We preached,' but 'Even now so we preach.'
Here he did not say, 'You believe,' but 'You believed.'
Since they were being shaken, on this account he ran back to earlier times, and adds thereafter the testimony from those very people.
But if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? Do you see how excellently he reasons, and demonstrates the resurrection from the fact that Christ has been raised, having first established that from many quarters? For the prophets foretold this, he says, and He Himself showed it through His appearing, and we preach it, and you believed it.
weaving a fourfold testimony: that through the prophets, that through the outcome of events, that through the apostles, that through the disciples;
他編織出四重的見證:藉著先知的見證,藉著事情的結局的見證,藉著使徒的見證,藉著門徒的見證;
39:26
or rather, even a fivefold one.
For this cause also demonstrates the resurrection—namely, His dying for the sins of others.
If, then, this has been demonstrated, it is quite evident that the other point also follows, namely, that the rest of the dead too are raised.
Wherefore, as concerning a matter admitted, he presses the charge and raises the difficulty, saying:
'But if Christ is preached that He rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?' And thereby again cutting off the audacity of the gainsayers.
For he did not say, 'How say ye,' but 'How say some among you.'
And he neither makes the accusation against all, nor exposes to view these very persons whom he blames, so as not to make them more shameless; nor yet, on the other hand, does he conceal them altogether, so that he may correct them.
For this reason, having severed them from the multitude, he strips himself for the contest against them; thereby making them weaker and confounding them, while keeping the others more securely upon the ground of the truth amid these struggles against those men, and not permitting them to desert to the side of those who were bent on corrupting them.
For indeed he has prepared himself to employ his discourse in the manner of an onslaught.
Then, lest they should say that this at least is plain and manifest to all, namely that Christ has been raised, and no one doubts it;
然後,免得他們說:至少這一點是眾人皆明白清楚的,就是Christ已經復活了,沒有人懷疑;
39:36
yet that this does not likewise compel the other point as well, namely the resurrection of men;
然而這一點卻不能同樣強而有力地推出另一點,就是人的復活;
39:37
for the one—the resurrection of Christ—was both foretold beforehand, and came to pass, and was attested through eyesight;
因為前者——就是Christ的復活——既是預先宣告了,也已經應驗,並藉著眼見得了見證;
39:38
but the other—our own—is still in the region of hope;
但後者——就是我們自己的復活——仍在盼望之中;
39:39
he establishes it again from the other side, which was a matter of great force.
'For what say some,' he asks, 'that there is no resurrection of the dead? Then surely that other truth also is again overthrown by this, namely that Christ has been raised.'
'But if there is no resurrection of the dead, neither has Christ been raised.'
Do you see the force, and the invincible contentiousness of Paul, how he attempts to prove that which is manifest not merely from the manifest fact itself, but even from that which is doubtful to the gainsayers—for the present—that manifest thing? Not because that which had already come to pass needed proof, but that he might show it to be equally trustworthy with the other.
'And what manner of sequence is this?' one asks. For that, if Christ has not been raised, neither are others raised—this is consequent;
有人問:「這是怎樣的邏輯呢?」因為若Christ沒有復活,別人也不復活——這是順理成章的;
39:44
but that, if others should not be raised, neither has He been raised—how could this have any reason in it? Since, then, this did not seem greatly to hold together in reason, observe how he works it out forcibly, casting in the seeds beforehand from above, from the very premise of the preaching itself: namely, that having died for our sins He has been raised, and that He is the firstfruits of them that have fallen asleep.
For of whom would the firstfruits be firstfruits, if not of those who are raised? And how could He be firstfruits if those of whom He is firstfruits are not raised? How then are they not raised? But if they are not raised, why was Christ raised? Why did He come? Why did He take flesh, if He was not about to raise flesh? For He had no need of it Himself, but did it for our sakes.
But these things he sets forth later as he proceeds; for the present he says:
'If the dead rise not, neither has Christ been raised;'
as though the one were bound up with the other;
彷彿那一件事與這一件事是連結在一起的;
39:49
for if He was not about to rise us up, neither would He have done that other thing.
Do you see how, little by little, the whole economy is overturned by their words and by their unbelief concerning the resurrection? But for the present he says nothing about the incarnation, but only about the resurrection.
For it was not the being made flesh, but the dying, that loosed death;
因為並非成了肉身,乃是那死,才解除了死亡;
39:52
since, so long as He merely had flesh, the tyranny of death still held sway.
'And if Christ has not been raised, then is our preaching vain.'
And yet the consequent thing to say would have been:
'But if Christ has not been raised, ye fight against things manifest, and against so many prophets, and against the truth of facts;'
but he sets before them what is far more fearful:
'Then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.'
For he wishes to shake their mind to its foundation.
'We have lost all,' he says, 'everything is gone, if He was not raised.'
Do you see how great is the mystery of the economy? For if, having died, He had not power to rise again, then neither has sin been loosed, nor has death been abolished, nor the curse
done away; and not only did we preach empty things, but ye also believed empty things.
And not by this alone does he show the absurdity of these wicked doctrines, but he contends further, saying:
'Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we witnessed against God that He raised up Christ, whom He raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.'
But if this is absurd—for it is an accusation against God and a calumny—and if He did not raise Him, as ye say, not this alone, but other absurdities also will follow.
And again he establishes these very points, and takes them up, saying:
'For if the dead rise not, neither has Christ been raised.'
For if He was not about to do this, neither would He have come at all.
But he does not say this; rather he speaks of the end, His resurrection, drawing all men by means of it.
'And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain.'
He continually attaches the resurrection of Christ to that which is plain and admitted, from the stronger point making that which seemed weak and doubtful to be strong and plain.
'Ye are yet in your sins.'
For if He was not raised, neither did He die;
因為若祂沒有復活,祂也就沒有死;
39:73
but if He did not die, neither did He loose sin;
若祂沒有死,祂也就沒有解除罪;
39:74
for His death is the loosing of sin.
'For behold,' he says, 'the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world.'
Wherefore also He was called a lamb, as being slain.
But if He rose not, neither was He slain;
但若祂沒有復活,祂也就沒有被宰殺;
39:78
and if He was not slain, neither was sin loosed;
若祂沒有被宰殺,罪也就沒有得解除;
39:79
and if it was not loosed, ye are in it;
若罪沒有得解除,你們就仍在罪中;
39:80
and if ye are in it, we preached in vain;
若你們仍在罪中,我們所傳的便是徒然;
39:81
and if we preached in vain, ye believed in vain.
And in another way too, death remains immortal, if He rose not.
For if He also was held fast by death, and did not loose its pangs, how did He set all the others free, while yet He Himself was held fast? Wherefore also he adds:
'Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.'
'And why do I speak concerning you,' he says, 'when even all those have perished who accomplished the whole course, and are no longer subject to the uncertainty of the future? And the phrase, In Christ, means either those who died in the faith, or those who died for His sake, who endured many perils, many hardships, who walked by the strait way.'
Where now are the wicked mouths of the Manichaeans, who say that here he means by resurrection the deliverance from sin? For these frequent and continuous syllogisms, and these inversions, betoken nothing of the things which those men allege, but rather that which we affirm.
For indeed resurrection is spoken of concerning that which has fallen.
For this reason also he continually adds not merely 'has been raised,' but subjoins also the words, 'from the dead.'
And moreover the Corinthians were disputing, not concerning the forgiveness of sins, but concerning the resurrection of bodies.
And what necessity is there at all that, unless men were sinless, neither should Christ be so? For if He was not about to raise us, it were consequent to ask, wherefore He came, and took flesh, and rose again; but our case no longer follows.
For whether men sin or sin not, sinlessness is ever present with God, and our case does not follow upon His, nor does this convert into that, as in the matter of the resurrection of bodies.
'If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.'
What sayest thou, O Paul? How is it that in this life only we have hoped, if bodies are not raised, seeing that the soul abides and is immortal? Because, even though the soul abide, even though it be immortal ten thousand times over—as indeed it is—yet apart from the flesh it will not receive those unspeakable good things, just as neither will it be punished apart from it;
保羅啊,你這是什麼意思呢?若身體不復活,而靈魂長存不朽,我們怎麼算是單在今生有了指望呢?因為靈魂縱然長存,縱然萬倍地不朽——它實在是不朽的——然而離了肉身,它就不能領受那些說不出來的美善,正如離了肉身它也不會受刑罰一樣;
39:94
for all things shall be made manifest before the judgment-seat of
Christ, that every one may receive the things done through the body, according to that which he hath done, whether good or bad.
'If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.'
For if the body rises not, the soul remains uncrowned, outside of that blessedness which is in the heavens;
因為若身體不復活,靈魂就仍不得冠冕,被摒棄在那天上的福樂之外;
39:98
But if this be so, we shall then enjoy nothing at all;
但若如此,那時我們就全然一無所享了;
39:99
and if we are to enjoy nothing then, the recompense for our labors lies in the present life.
'What then,' he says, 'could be more wretched than we, in this regard?' Now he said these things partly to establish them in the doctrine concerning the resurrection of the bodies,
and partly to persuade them concerning that immortal life, so that they might not suppose that all our concerns are dissolved in the present.
For having sufficiently established, through what went before, what he intended, and having said, 'If the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised;'
'and if Christ be not raised, we are perished, and are yet in our sins;'
he again brings in this also, shaking down their arrogance.
For indeed, whenever he is about to introduce some necessary doctrine, he first unsettles their hardness of heart by fear;
因為每當他將要引入某項必要的教義時,總是先用懼怕來動搖他們剛硬的心;
39:106
which very thing he did here also, both by scattering these arguments earlier, and by throwing them into anguish, as having fallen away from all;
這正是他在此所做的,既在前面散佈這些論證,又使他們陷入焦慮,彷彿已從一切中墜落了;
39:107
and now again in another way, and in such a manner as would most grieve them, doing this same thing, and saying:
'We are of all men most pitiable,' if, after so many wars and deaths and countless perils, we are to fall short of so many good things, and our concerns stand fast only as far as the present life;
「我們就比眾人更可憐了」,倘若在經歷了這許多爭戰、死亡和無數的苦難之後,我們竟要與這許多福分無份,而我們的一切僅止於今生;
39:109
for indeed everything hangs upon the resurrection.
So that from this too it is plain, that his discourse was not about sins,
but about the resurrection of the bodies, and about the present life and the life to come.
'But now is Christ risen from the dead, the firstfruits of them that slept.'
Having shown how many evils are begotten from disbelief in the resurrection, he takes up the discourse again, and says:
'But now is Christ risen from the dead;'
continually adding 'from the dead,' so as to sew up the mouths of the heretics.
'The firstfruits of them that slept.'
But if He is the firstfruits, these also must rise.
But if by 'resurrection' he meant the deliverance from sins, and no one is without sin (for Paul too says, 'I know nothing against myself, yet am I not hereby justified'), how, according to you, shall there be any who rise? Do you see that his discourse was about bodies? And in order to make it worthy of belief, he continually brings Christ into the midst, Him who rose in the flesh.
For as I said, whenever he makes an assertion but does not state the cause, the discourse does not become so readily acceptable to the multitude.
What then is the cause? 'For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.'
But if it be by man, then by one who assuredly has a body.
And observe his sagacity, how in yet another way he makes the argument compelling.
For he says, the very one who was overcome must fight again for the nature that was cast down, and himself must conquer;
因為他說,那被打敗的本性,必須由那同一位重新為它爭戰,並由祂親自得勝;
39:124
for thus was the reproach wiped away.
But let us see of what kind of death he speaks.
'For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.'
What then? Tell me, did all die in Adam the death of sin? How then was Noah righteous in his generation? How Abraham? How Job? How all the rest? And tell me, shall all be made alive in Christ? And where are those who are led away to hell? For if this be spoken of the body, the argument stands;
那麼怎樣呢?請告訴我,眾人都在亞當裡死了罪的死嗎?那麼挪亞在他那世代怎能算為義呢?亞伯拉罕又怎樣?約伯又怎樣?其餘的眾人又怎樣呢?請告訴我,眾人都要在基督裡活過來嗎?那被帶往地獄的人又在哪裡呢?因為若這話是指身體說的,這論證便站得住;
39:128
but if it be of righteousness and sin, it no longer stands.
Then, lest hearing of a common quickening you should suppose that sinners also are saved, he added:
'But every man in his own order.'
For do not, because you have heard of a resurrection, suppose that all enjoy the same things.
For if in the matter of punishment not all shall suffer the same things, but there is great difference, much more, where there are sinners and righteous, will the distinction be greater.
'Christ the firstfruits, afterward they that are Christ's;'
that is, the faithful and those who have been approved.
For when those rise, all things shall receive their consummation, not as now, when though Christ is risen, affairs still stand suspended.
Wherefore he added, 'At His coming,' that you may learn that he is speaking of that season.
'When He shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father;'
'when He shall have abolished all rule and all authority and power.'
Here give heed to me with exactness, and see that nothing of what is said escape you.
For indeed our battle is against enemies;
因為我們的爭戰乃是與仇敵相對;
39:141
wherefore we must first exercise ourselves in the reduction to absurdity, which Paul also often does;
因此我們必須先操練那將謬論歸於荒謬的方法,這也是保羅常做的;
39:142
for thus especially will what they say be made easy for us to detect.
Let us then ask them first, what is meant by the saying, 'When He shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father?' For if we take this simply,
and not in a manner befitting God, He will not possess it thereafter;
而非以合乎神的方式來領會這話,那祂此後就不再擁有那國了;
39:145
for he who has delivered a thing to another henceforth ceases himself to hold it.
And this will not be the only absurdity, but also that not even he who received it will be found to have possessed it before receiving.
Therefore, according to them, neither was the Father king before, when He rules over our affairs, nor will the Son afterward appear to be king.
How then does He Himself say concerning the Father, 'My Father works hitherto, and I work?' and Daniel concerning Him, that 'His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, which shall not pass away?' Do you see how many absurdities are begotten, and things at variance with the Scriptures, when one takes what is said in a human fashion? And what kind of rule does he here say is to be abolished? That of the angels? Away with the thought!
But that of the faithful? Neither this.
But what kind? That of the demons, concerning which he says, 'We wrestle not against blood and flesh, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age.'
For now they have not yet been altogether abolished;
因為現今牠們還未被完全廢去;
39:152
for they are active in many places.
'For He must reign, till He hath put all enemies under His feet.'
Again here too another absurdity is begotten, unless we take this also in a manner befitting God.
For the word 'till' implies an end and a limit;
因為「等到」這詞含有終止與界限之意;
39:156
but in the case of God this cannot be.
'The last enemy that shall be abolished is death.'
How 'last'? After all, after the devil, after all the rest.
For indeed in the beginning also it entered last;
因為在起初,牠也是末後才進來的;
39:160
for first came the counsel of the devil, and the disobedience, and then death.
In power, then, it has even now been abolished; but in actual working, then.
'For He hath put all things under His feet.'
But when He saith, 'All things are put under Him,' it is manifest that He is excepted who did put all things under Him.
'And when all things shall be subdued unto Him, then shall the Son also Himself be subject unto Him that put all things under Him.'
And yet before this he said that it was not the Father who put them in subjection, but He Himself who abolishes them;
然而在此以前他曾說,使它們降服的並非父,乃是子自己廢去它們的;
39:166
'For when He shall have abolished,' he says, 'all rule and authority;'
and again, 'For He must reign, till He hath put all enemies under His feet.'
How then does he here call him Father? And this is not the only thing that seems to be a difficulty, but also that he is seized with an exceedingly strange fear, and employs a further correction, saying:
'Except him who subjected all things unto him' — as though some suspected that perhaps even the Father should be subjected to the Son;
「那使萬有服他的,不在其內」——彷彿有些人猜疑,恐怕連父也要服在子的以下;
39:170
than which what could be more irrational? Yet nevertheless he feared even this.
What then is the meaning? For indeed many questions lie here one after another;
那麼,這是什麼意思呢?因為確有許多問題接連擺在這裡;
39:172
but strain your minds attentively for me.
For it is necessary for us first to state Paul's aim and his mind, which one may find shining forth everywhere, and then to bring in the solution;
因為我們必須先陳明保羅的目的與他的心意——這心意你在各處都能看見它熠熠發光——然後才引出解答;
39:174
for this too contributes to our solution.
What then is Paul's mind, and what his custom? He speaks in one way when he discourses concerning the Godhead alone, and in another way when he falls into the discussion of the economy of the incarnation.
For whenever he takes hold of the flesh, he thenceforth utters all the lowly things without fear, being confident that it is sufficient to receive what is said.
Let us then see, here also, whether his discourse is concerning the bare Godhead, or whether it is together with the economy that he declares these things which he says concerning him;
那麼,讓我們也在此察看:他的論述究竟是關於赤裸的神性,還是連同著經綸,才宣講他所說關於他的這些話;
39:178
or rather, let us first show where he did this very thing which I spoke of.
Where then did he do this? Writing to the Philippians he says:
'Who, being in the form of God, counted it not a thing to be grasped to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and being found in fashion as a man;'
'he humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, yea, the death of the cross.'
'Wherefore God also highly exalted him.'
Do you see how, when he was discoursing concerning the Godhead alone, he spoke those great things — the being in the form of God, and the being equal with him who begot him, and he ascribes the whole to him;
你看見了嗎?當他單論神性時,他說了那些偉大的話——本有神的形像,並與那生他的同等,且將一切都歸於他;
39:184
but when he showed him to you made flesh, he brought down his language again? For unless you distinguish these things, there is great conflict in what is said.
For if he was equal with God, how did he highly exalt the one equal to himself? If he was in the form of God, how did he bestow on him a name? For he who bestows, bestows on one who does not have,
and he who exalts, exalts the one who was before in a lowly state.
He will therefore be found to be imperfect, and in want, before he received the exaltation and the name; and countless other absurd conclusions will follow from this.
But if you add the economy of the incarnation, you will not err in saying these things.
These things then reckon here also, and receive what is said with this mind.
And besides these, we will state yet other reasons.
Meanwhile it is necessary to say this also, that Paul's discourse was concerning the resurrection, a matter that seemed to be impossible and was exceedingly disbelieved;
同時,也必須說明這一點:保羅的論述是關於復活的——這是一件看似不可能、又極被人懷疑不信的事;
39:192
and he was writing to the Corinthians, where the philosophers who always mocked such things were more numerous.
For indeed, though in other matters they broke asunder against one another, in this they all, as though from one mouth, breathed together, dogmatizing that there is no resurrection.
Contending therefore on behalf of such a thesis, so disbelieved and derided both because of the preconception that had arisen and because of the difficulty of the matter, and wishing to establish its possibility, he first accomplishes this from the resurrection of Christ;
因此,他為著這樣一個論題爭戰——這論題如此被人不信、被人嘲笑,既因已生成的成見,又因這事的艱難——並且渴望立定它的可能性,他就首先從基督的復活著手成就這事;
39:195
and having demonstrated it both from the prophets and from those who had seen and from those who had believed, since he had obtained the reduction to absurdity as admitted, he then establishes the resurrection of men also;
他既從眾先知、又從那些親眼看見的人、並從那些已信的人證明了它,既得著眾人公認那歸謬之論,此後他也就立定了人的復活;
39:196
'For if the dead rise not,' he says, 'neither is Christ risen.'
Then, having continually turned these things about in what precedes, he sets to work again in another way, calling him a firstfruits, and showing that he abolishes every rule and authority and power, and death last of all.
How then could it be abolished, he says, unless first it cast off the bodies which it held? Since then he had uttered great things concerning the Only-begotten — that he delivers up the kingdom, that is, that he himself accomplishes these things, and he himself conquers in the war, and puts all things under his feet — he added, correcting the unbelief of the many:
'For he must reign, until he has put all his enemies under his feet.'
It was not to set an end to the kingdom that he said 'until,' but to make what was said worthy of belief, and to prepare them to take courage.
For do not, because you have heard, he says, that he will abolish every rule and authority and power, and the devil and the phalanxes of the demons so numerous, and the multitudes of the unbelievers, and the tyranny of death, and all evils, be afraid, as though he were weak;
他說,你不要因為聽見他將廢去一切執政的、掌權的、有能的,並廢去那魔鬼、那眾多的鬼魔隊伍、那不信之人的群眾、那死亡的暴政、以及一切的惡,就害怕,彷彿他是軟弱無力的;
39:202
for until he has done all these things, he must reign;
因為直到他行完這一切事以前,他必要作王;
39:203
not saying this, that after he has done them he does not reign, but establishing this, that even if it does not come to pass now, it will assuredly be.
For his kingdom is not cut short;
因為他的國度並不中斷;
39:205
for it prevails and is mighty and abides, until he has set all things right.
And this usage one may find also in the Old Testament, as when it says, 'But the word of the Lord abides for ever;'
39:207
and, 'But thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.'
These things and the like the prophet says whenever he is narrating matters that are being accomplished over a long time and that will assuredly come to pass, casting out the faint-heartedness of the grosser hearers.
And that 'until,' when spoken of God, and 'while,' does not signify an end, hear what it says:
39:210
'From everlasting to everlasting thou art;'
39:211
and, 'Until you grow old, I am he.'
For this very reason he also sets death last, so that from the victory over the others this too may become easy for the unbeliever to accept.
For when he has destroyed the devil who introduced death, much more will he dissolve that one's work.
Since then he has ascribed all things to him — the abolishing of the rulers, the authorities, the setting right of the kingdom, I mean the salvation of the faithful, the peace of the world, the destruction of evils (for this is to set the kingdom right, namely to abolish death);
既然他把萬事都歸於他——廢去那些執政的、掌權的,成就那國度,我是指信徒的救恩、世界的平安、諸惡的除滅(因為這正是成就國度,就是廢除死亡);
39:215
and he did not say that the Father does it through him, but that he himself will abolish, and he himself will put under his feet, and nowhere did he make mention of the One who begot him;
而且他沒有說父藉著他行這事,卻說是他親自要廢去,是他親自要放在自己腳下,並且他絲毫未曾提及那生他的;
39:216
he thereafter feared lest on this account the Son should seem to some of the more irrational persons to be either greater than the Father, or some other unbegotten first principle;
此後他就懼怕,恐怕因這緣故,子在某些較不明理的人眼中,就顯得或是比父更大,或是另一個未受生的本原;
39:217
and for this reason, gently guarding against it, he softens the weight of what has been said, saying:
'For he put all things in subjection under his feet.'
ascribing the accomplishments to the Father — not as though the Son were weak (for how could that be, to whom he had borne such great witness before, and to whom he had assigned all the things that were said?), but for the reason which I mentioned, and in order to show that all that was done on our behalf is common to the Father and the Son.
For that he himself sufficed of himself to subject all things to him, hear Paul again saying:
'Who shall transform the body of our humiliation, that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working whereby he is able even to subject all things unto himself.'
Then he employs also a correction, saying:
'But when he says that all things have been put in subjection, it is manifest that it is except him who subjected all things unto him' — bearing here too no small witness to the glory of the Only-begotten.
For if he were less and much more deficient, he would never have feared this dread.
And not even with this is he content, but he adds yet another thing, saying:
39:226
For that no one may suspect and say:
'For what if the Father also is not made subject? This in no way prevents the Son from being stronger' — fearing this impious surmise, since that was not enough to show this also, he added out of great abundance:
'But when all things have been subjected to him, then shall the Son also himself be subjected;'
showing the great concord toward the Father, and that this One is the beginning of all good things and the first cause, He who begot the One who is able to do and to accomplish such great things.
But if he has said more than the argument of the matter required, do not marvel;
但他若說得比這事的論題所要求的更多,你不要希奇;
39:231
for in imitation of his own Teacher he does this.
For indeed, when He too wished to show concord toward Him who begot Him, and that He came not against His will, He descended so far — not so far as the demonstration of the concord required, but so far as the weakness of those present had need.
For He prays to Him who begot Him for no other reason than this, and stating the cause He says, 'That they may believe that thou didst send me.'
In imitation of Him, then, here too Paul has used the expression out of abundance, not that you should suspect a forced servitude — far from it — but that he might cast out those absurd doctrines out of abundance.
For indeed, whenever he wishes to pluck up something by the very roots, he uses much abundance.
Thus at any rate, when speaking also of a believing wife and an unbelieving husband dwelling together by the law of marriage, in order that the wife might not think she was defiled by the intercourse and the embraces about the unbeliever, he did not say that the wife is not unclean, nor that she is in no way harmed by the unbeliever, but — what was much more — that even the unbeliever is sanctified through her; not wishing to show this, that the Greek became holy from her, but hastening by the excess of the expression to release her from her fear.
So here too, being eager to destroy that impious doctrine by the abundance of the expression, he said what he said.
For just as to suspect the Son of being weak belongs to the utmost impiety,
因為懷疑聖子軟弱無能,乃是極端的不敬虔;
39:239
wherefore he corrects this very thing, saying that 'He shall put all His enemies under His feet';
so again, more impious even than this is it to think the Father greater.
Therefore he also removes this notion with much emphasis.
39:242
And observe how he states it:
for he did not say simply, 'Except Him that put all things under Him,' but, 'It is manifest that.'
For 'even though it be admitted,' he says, 'nevertheless I make it secure.'
And that you may learn that this is the reason for what has been said, I would ask you this:
Is there then any addition of subjection made to the Son at that time? And how is this not absurd and unworthy of God? For this is the greatest subjection and obedience, that God, being God, took upon Him the form of a servant.
How then shall He be subjected at that time? Do you see that in removing the absurd suspicion he set this down, and set it down too with a fitting sense? For He obeys as it becomes a Son and God to obey, not after the manner of men, but in freedom and possessing all authority.
Since how else is He seated on the same throne? How, as the Father raises up whom He will, does He Himself also raise up whom He will? How are all things that are the Father's His, and His the Father's? For these things declare to us a perfectly equal authority with Him that begot Him.
But what does it mean, 'When He shall deliver up the kingdom'? The Scripture knows two kingdoms of God: the one according to appropriation, and the other according to creation.
For He reigns over all, both Greeks and Jews and demons
and demons and the adversaries, according to the principle of creation;
以及一切敵對者,都在祂的統管之下;
39:252
but He reigns over the faithful, and the willing, and those who have submitted themselves, according to the principle of appropriation.
This kingdom is also said to have a beginning;
這國度也被說為有一個開端;
39:254
for concerning this He speaks also in the second Psalm:
'Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance';
concerning this too He Himself said to the disciples:
'All authority has been given to Me by My Father,' ascribing all things to Him that begot Him, not as though He Himself were insufficient, but showing that He is a Son and not unbegotten.
This kingdom, then, He delivers up, that is, He brings it to perfection.
'Why then,' one says, 'has he said nothing about the Spirit?' Because his discourse was not now about this, nor does he confound all things together;
有人說:『那麼,他為甚麼隻字未提聖靈呢?』因為他此刻所論的並不是這件事,他也不將一切混為一談;
39:260
since when he says, 'One God the Father, and one Lord Jesus,' it is by no means because he leaves the Spirit to be less that he is silent on this, but because for the present it was not urgent, that he said this.
For he knows how to make mention of the Father alone, and we shall not on that account cast out the Son;
因為他懂得單單題起父,而我們不會因此就把子逐出;
39:262
he knows how to mention the Son and the Spirit alone, and we shall not on that account set aside the Father.
But what does it mean, 'That God may be all in all'? That all things may be dependent upon Him, that no one may suspect two principles without beginning, nor another kingdom severed apart.
For when the enemies lie subdued under the feet of the Son, and He who has them cast beneath His feet does not rise up in faction against Him that begot Him, but is of one mind with Him in perfect accord, then shall He Himself be all in all.
But some say that he spoke this to signify the abolition of wickedness, as when all henceforth yield and none resists nor does evil.
For when sin is no more, it is quite plain that God will be all in all.
But if the bodies do not rise, how are these things true? For death, the most grievous enemy of all, remains, having accomplished what it wished.
'For they shall no longer sin,' he says.
And what of this? For he is not here discoursing about the death of the soul, but about that of the body.
How then is it abolished? For this is victory: to receive back the things that were taken away and held in captivity.
But if the bodies are going to be held fast in the earth, then his tyranny remains, since these are held, and there is no other body wherein he shall be vanquished.
But if that which Paul said comes to pass—as indeed it will—then the victory of God will appear glorious, He being able to raise up the bodies held fast by him.
Since one conquers an enemy at that time, when he takes the spoils, not when he lets them remain with him;
因為人得勝仇敵,是在奪取戰利品的時候,而不是任憑戰利品留在仇敵那裡的時候;
39:274
but if one should not dare to take his own, how could we say that he had been vanquished? (7)
This manner of victory Christ also says in the Gospels that He has conquered, thus speaking:
'When he binds the strong man, then also will he plunder his goods.'
For unless this comes to pass, neither would the victory be clear.
For just as in the case of the death of the soul, he that has died is justified from sin, and yet we would not call this a victory;
因為正如在魂之死的事上,那已死的人得以脫罪稱義,我們卻不會稱這為勝利;
39:279
for he is the conqueror, not who ceases to add to his evils, but who dissolves the captivity of the passions already come to pass;
因為得勝者並非那不再增添自己惡行的人,乃是那解除了已然發生的、被情慾擄掠之捆綁的人;
39:280
even so also here, I would not say that the halting of death as it preys upon the bodies is a glorious victory, but rather the tearing away of what has already been held fast by him.
But if they should still contend and say that these things were spoken concerning the death of the soul, how is this destroyed last? For in each one being baptized it has been perfectly abolished already.
But if you speak concerning the body, that which is said has room, namely that it is destroyed last.
And if anyone should be at a loss why, in discoursing about the resurrection, he did not bring forward into the midst the bodies that rose in the case of the Lord, we would say this: that this was not to speak on behalf of the resurrection.
For to point to those who rose again dying afterwards was not the act of one demonstrating that death is utterly abolished.
For this reason too he said that it is abolished last, that you may no longer suspect it to rise up again.
For when wickedness is done away, much more will death cease.
For it would have no reason, when the fountain is dried up, that the river issuing from it should hold together, and when the root has vanished, that the fruit should remain.
Since, therefore, in the last day the enemies of God are abolished together with death and the devil and the demons,
let us not be vexed at the enemies of God who prosper.
For the enemies of the Lord, at the very moment of being glorified and exalted, failing, have vanished like smoke.
When you see anyone who is an enemy of God rich, attended by a bodyguard, having many flatterers, do not be cast down, but groan, weep, entreat God, that He may enroll him among His friends;
當你看見一個神的仇敵富有、有侍衛簇擁、有許多阿諛奉承者時,不要灰心喪膽,倒要歎息、流淚、懇求神將他列入祂朋友的行列;
39:292
and the more he prospers while being an enemy, the more do you mourn for him.
For sinners must always be lamented, but most of all when they enjoy wealth and much prosperity, just as we lament the sick when they gorge themselves and are drunken.
But there are some who, even hearing these words, are so wretchedly disposed that they groan bitterly over themselves and say, 'Worthy of tears am I, who have nothing.'
You have said well, 'He who has nothing'—not because you do not have what that man has, but because you count the thing to be blessed;
你說得好,『一無所有的人』——並不是因為你沒有那人所有的,乃是因為你把那事當作可羨慕的福分;
39:296
wherefore you would be worthy of ten thousand lamentations.
For if one who lives in health should count blessed the man who is sick and lies upon a soft bed, this man is far more miserable and wretched than that one, because he has no perception of his own good things.
Which indeed one may see happening in the case of these men also;
這事實在也可在這等人身上看見;
39:299
whence our whole life has been confounded and thrown into disorder.
For these words have destroyed ten thousand, and betrayed them to the devil, and made them more pitiable than those wasting away with hunger.
For that those who covet more are more wretched than the beggars, inasmuch as they are held by a greater and sharper despondency than these, is plain from the following.
A drought once seized our city, and all trembled for the last extremity, and besought God to loose this terror;
有一次乾旱臨到我們的城,眾人都為最壞的結局戰兢,懇求神解除這可怕的災禍;
39:303
and it was possible then to see that which was spoken by Moses, the heaven become as brass, and a death more grievous than all deaths expected each day.
But afterwards, it seeming good to the God who loves mankind, beyond all hope a great and boundless rain was borne down from above, and all were henceforth in festival and celebration, as having ascended from the very gates of death.
But amid so many good things and the common gladness of all, one of these exceedingly rich men went about gloomy and downcast, dead with despondency; and when many asked the cause why, in the common pleasure of all mankind, he alone was in pain, he could not even keep this grievous passion within, but, goaded by the tyranny of his malady, brought forth the cause into the midst:
'For having in my possession,' he says, 'ten thousand measures of grain, I now have no way to dispose of them.'
Shall we then, tell me, count this man blessed for these words—for which he ought rather to be stoned—him who is more savage than any wild beast, the common enemy? What are you saying, O man? Do you grieve that not all perished, that you might gather gold? Have you not heard what Solomon says, 'He that withholds grain to raise its price is cursed by the people'? But you go about as the common enemy of the good things of the world, and a foe to the bounty of the Master of the world, and a friend of Mammon—nay rather a slave? Ought not that tongue to have been cut out? Ought not the heart that gave birth to these words to have been quenched? (8)
Do you see how gold does not permit men to remain men, but makes them wild beasts and demons? For what could be more pitiable than the rich man, who prays each day for a famine to come, that gold may accrue to him? For his passion in the end turns round upon him to his own harm.
For he does not rejoice in the abundance of his stores of produce; nay, for this very reason he is henceforth in pain—because he possesses beyond measure.
And yet he who possesses much ought to have rejoiced;
然而擁有許多的人本該歡喜;
39:311
but this man, for this very reason, is downcast.
Do you see that, as I was saying, the rich do not reap so great a pleasure from what they possess as they endure dejection over what has not yet accrued to them? For the man who possessed countless myriads of measures of grain was in greater pain and groaned more than the man who was hungry;
你看見了嗎?正如我所說的,富人從現有之物所享的快樂,遠不及他們為那尚未到手之物所受的愁苦。那擁有無數萬斗穀糧的人,比那飢餓的人更加痛苦、更多歎息;
39:313
and he who had his necessary food was crowned, and leaped for joy, and gave thanks to God;
而那只有必需口糧的人,卻如同得了冠冕,歡躍跳動,向神獻上感謝;
39:314
while he who possessed much was vexed and thought himself ruined.
It is not, then, abundance that produces pleasure, but a mind schooled in wisdom;
可見產生快樂的並非富餘,乃是一顆存智慧的心;
39:316
for without this, even if a man take and hold all things, he will be so disposed as one bereft of everything, and will lament.
Since even this man, of whom we now speak, even if he had sold all he had at as high a price as he wished, would again have been in pain that it was not for more; and if he had managed to get more, he would again have sought some further excess; and if he had disposed of the bushel for a single gold piece, even there he would again have been cut through by dejection, because the half-bushel was not worth so much.
But if from the beginning the price is not so high, do not be surprised;
但若一開始價格並不那麼高,你不要希奇;
39:319
for even drunkards are not inflamed from the outset, but when they have been filled with much unmixed wine, then they kindle a more grievous flame.
So these men too: the more they wrap about themselves, the greater the want in which they are placed; and those who gain more are themselves most of all the ones who are poor.
These things I have said not with reference to this man alone, but also to every one who is sick with such maladies, and who raises the price of wares, and who trades upon the poverty of his neighbors.
For of love toward mankind there is nowhere any account;
至於愛人之心,卻無處尋見;
39:323
but everywhere the lust of covetousness, at the season of selling, leads many astray; and grain and wine the one sold sooner, the other later, yet neither out of concern for others, but the one that he might get more, the other that he might not get less, when the crop had taken a turn.
For since the majority, making no great account of God's laws, keep all shut up within, God, leading them to love of mankind by another way—so that even if by necessity they should do something good—cast in a fear of greater loss, not suffering the fruits of the earth to last for a long time, in order that, dreading the harm that comes from spoilage, they might set forth their goods to the needy even against their will, the very things which, by burying them at home, they keep to their own hurt.
And yet, even after these things, some are so insatiable that they are not even instructed thereby.
Many, at all events, have emptied whole casks, giving to the poor not so much as a ladleful, nor a piece of silver to the needy, but when the wine turned sour they poured it all out upon the ground, and destroyed their casks along with the produce.
Others again, not sharing so much as a single barley-cake with the hungry, flung whole granaries into the river;
另有些人,連一塊大麥餅也不分給飢餓的人,卻把整倉整倉的糧食拋進河裏;
39:328
and since, when God commanded to give to the needy, they did not hearken, when the moth gave the order they, even against their will, drained out all that was within unto destruction and utter ruin, drawing down upon their own head, along with this loss, much laughter and many curses.
39:329
And the things here are of such a kind;
此世的事既是如此;
39:330
but the things there—what word shall set them forth? For just as these men cast into the rivers the moth-eaten grain that has become useless here, so those who have done such things, having for this very reason become useless, God casts into the river of fire.
For just as the moth and the worm eat up the grain, so cruelty and inhumanity devoured the souls of these men.
And the cause of these things is the being nailed to present goods, and gaping only after this present life;
這一切的緣由,就是釘牢在眼前之物上,並且只顧貪戀今生;
39:333
whence also such men become full of countless dejections.
For whatever pleasant thing you may name, the fear of death is able to blot it all out, and such a man is dead while yet living.
And that the unbelievers should suffer these things is nothing to wonder at;
不信的人遭受這些事,原不足為奇;
39:336
but when those who have enjoyed so many mysteries, and have philosophized so much concerning things to come, cleave to present things, of what pardon could they be worthy? Whence, then, comes this cleaving to present things? From giving heed to luxury, and fattening the flesh, and enervating the soul, and making the burden heavy, and the darkness deep, and the veil thick.
For in luxury the better part is enslaved, and the worse prevails;
因為在逸樂之中,那較優的部分被奴役,那較劣的部分卻得勢;
39:338
and the one is blinded on every side and dragged along maimed, while the other leads and leads about everywhere, though it ought to lie in the rank of those that are led.
For great is the bond of the soul toward the body, this the Creator having contrived, that none might be persuaded to hate it as though it were something alien.
For God commanded us to love our enemies;
神既吩咐我們要愛仇敵;
39:341
but the devil had such power that he even
persuaded some to hate their own body.
For when he says that it belongs to the devil, he establishes nothing other than this;
因為當他說身體是屬魔鬼的時候,他所立定的不外乎這一點;
39:344
which is the utmost folly.
For if it belongs to the devil, whence this great harmony, that it should be adapted on every side for the operations of the wisdom-loving soul? 'And if it is well-adapted,' he says, 'how does it blind her?' It is not the body that blinds the soul—away with the thought, O man!—but luxury.
And whence do we crave luxury? Not from having a body—by no means—but from an evil choice.
For the body needs nourishment, not luxury; the body has need of being fed, not of being cut through and dissolved.
For not to the soul only, but even to the very body that is fed, luxury is an enemy.
For it becomes weaker instead of strong, and softer instead of firm, and diseased instead of healthy, and heavier instead of light, and looser instead of compact, and unsightly instead of comely, and more foul-smelling instead of fragrant, and unclean instead of clean, and full of pain instead of at ease, and useless instead of useful, and old instead of young, and rotten instead of strong, and slow and sluggish instead of swift, and lame instead of sound.
And yet if it belonged to the devil, it ought not to be injured by his things—by wickedness, I mean.
But neither the body nor the food belongs to the devil, but luxury alone.
For through this that wicked demon accomplishes his countless evils;
因為那惡鬼正是藉著奢逸成就牠無窮的惡事;
39:353
thus he broke the neck of a whole people.
'For the beloved,' it says, 'waxed fat, and grew thick, and was enlarged, and kicked.'
And for Sodom, too, from this source came the beginning of those thunderbolts.
And Ezekiel, making this plain, said:
'Yet this was the iniquity of Sodom: in pride and in fullness of bread and in prosperity they lived wantonly.'
For this reason also Paul said:
'But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.'
Why ever so? Because she carries about her body like a tomb, bound with countless evils.
But if the body is thus destroyed, how will the soul be disposed? Of how great a tumult, of how many waves, of how great a storm will it be full? For this very reason it becomes useless for all things, and will not easily be able either to speak, or to hear, or to deliberate, or to do any of the things that are needful;
身體既這樣被毀壞,那靈魂又當如何呢?它要充滿何等的騷亂、何等的波濤、何等的風暴呢?正因如此,靈魂就對一切都成了無用,既不能輕易說話,也不能聽,不能思慮,也不能行任何當行的事;
39:362
but just as a helmsman, when the storm has overpowered his skill, is sunk beneath the waves together with the very ship and the passengers,
so also the soul together with the body is plunged down into the grievous abyss of insensibility.
For just as some mill, God set the belly within us, giving it a power proportioned to itself, and appointing a fixed measure which it must grind each day.
If, then, one throw in more, becoming undigested it harms the whole.
Hence come diseases and infirmities and deformities;
疾病、衰弱、醜陋都是由此而來;
39:367
for luxury makes what is beautiful not only diseased, but also ugly.
For when a woman belches unpleasant things continually, and reeks of putrid wine, and is flushed more than is fitting, and destroys the rhythm proper to a woman, and loses all decency of form, and her flesh becomes flabby, and her eyelids bloodshot and swollen, and there is fatness beyond what is fitting, and superfluous corpulence;
因為當一個婦人不斷打著難聞的嗝,噴出腐酒的氣味,臉紅得過了度,敗壞了婦人所當有的勻稱,喪盡了一切端莊的體態,肌肉變得鬆弛,眼瞼充血浮腫,肥胖過了度,贅肉多餘;
39:369
consider how great is the unpleasantness that thence arises.
And I have even heard physicians say that luxury has especially hindered many from shooting up to their proper height.
For the breath being obstructed by the multitude of the things thrown down, and being occupied about the working-up of these, that which ought to have gone forward for growth is spent upon the working-up of the superfluous matter.
Why should one speak of the gout, of the rheum that wanders everywhere, of the other diseases that come thence, of all the loathsomeness? For nothing is so unpleasant as a woman who eats much.
For this reason among poor women one may see greater comeliness of form, the superfluities being consumed away and not being plastered upon them, like some superfluous clay, idly and to no purpose.
For the daily exercise, and the labors, and the hardships, and the moderate table, and the frugal manner of life, furnish them much good health, and thence also much bloom.
But if you speak of the pleasure of luxury, you will find it reaching only as far as the throat.
For at the same moment it has passed the tongue and flown away,
leaving behind many unpleasantnesses.
For do not look at the luxurious only when they are reclining at table, but when you see them risen and gone, then follow after them, and you will behold bodies more like those of wild beasts and brute animals than of men.
For you will see them with heads heavy and reeling, straining, their limbs bound together, needing a couch and bedding and much quiet, tossed as though upon a great surge of waves, needing others to keep them from sinking, and longing for that former state in which they were before they burst themselves asunder.
For just like women great with child, so they too carry about their bellies weighed down, and can scarcely step, and scarcely see, and scarcely speak, and do everything with difficulty.
And if they happen to doze off a little, again they see strange dreams teeming with a thousand fantasies.
What would one say of that other madness of theirs, I mean the madness of sensual lust? For this too has its springs from this same source.
And like stallions maddened with lust for the mare, so, goaded by the sting of drunkenness, they leap upon everyone, cavorting more irrationally and more frantically than those beasts, and committing many other shameful acts which it is not even lawful to name.
For henceforth they know neither what they suffer nor what they do.
39:385
But the man who lives not in luxury is not such a one;
然而那不貪圖宴樂的人卻不是這樣;
39:386
rather, he sits in harbour beholding the shipwrecks of others, and enjoys a pleasure pure and enduring, pursuing the manner of life that befits a free man.
Knowing these things, therefore, let us flee the wicked banquets of luxury, and cling to a frugal table, that being well-disposed in both soul and body, we may work every virtue and attain the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
