16:1
I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit.
Did I not seem to you, on the day before, to have spoken certain great and surpassing things concerning Paul's love toward Christ? For indeed they were by nature great, and beyond all speech;
前一天我論到保羅對基督的愛,豈不是在你們看來說了一些偉大而超凡的話麼?這些原本就是極大的事,且是超乎一切言語的;
16:3
yet the things now spoken have as great a surpassingness over those, as those had over the things that are ours.
And yet I did not think that they could be surpassed; but nevertheless the words read to us today, when they came, appeared far more brilliant than all of those.
Which very thing he himself also perceived, and disclosed it from the outset in the prologue, inasmuch as he was about to enter upon greater matters and to be disbelieved by the many.
But first he makes firm assurance concerning the things he is about to say;
然而他先就自己將要說的話作了堅定的保證;
16:7
which many are wont to do, whenever they are about to say something that is disbelieved among the many, and about which they themselves have been thoroughly persuaded.
For 'I speak the truth,' he says, 'and I lie not, and my conscience bears me witness, that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.'
'For I could wish that I myself were anathema from Christ.'
What are you saying, O Paul? From Christ, the One you long for, from whom neither kingdom nor hell could separate you, neither things seen nor things conceived, nor so many other things — from Him do you now pray to be anathema? What has happened? Have you been changed, and have you dissolved that longing? 'No,' he says, 'fear not;
保羅啊,你在說什麼?要與基督分離嗎?就是你所渴慕的那一位,無論是國度或地獄都不能使你與祂隔絕,無論是看得見的或想得到的,或其他無數的事都不能——你如今竟祈求要與祂分離、被咒詛嗎?發生了什麼事?你改變了嗎?你把那渴慕之情消滅了嗎?他說:「不,你不要懼怕;
16:11
for I have even intensified it the more.'
How then do you pray to be anathema, and seek such estrangement and separation, after which no other can be found? 'Because,' he says, 'I love Him exceedingly.'
How, tell me, and in what manner? For the matter resembles a riddle.
But rather, if it seems good, let us first learn what the anathema really is, and then let us question him concerning these things, and we shall come to know this ineffable and paradoxical love.
What then is the anathema? Hear him as he speaks:
'If anyone love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema.'
That is, let him be separated from all, let him be a stranger to all.
For just as none would dare simply to touch with his hands the votive offering (anathema) that is dedicated to God, nor even to come near it;
因為正如沒有人敢隨便用手去觸摸那奉獻給神的祭物(anathema),甚至不敢靠近它;
16:19
so also him who is separated from the Church he calls by this name from the opposite sense, cutting him off from all and leading him as far away as possible, with much fear forbidding all to separate themselves from him and to shrink from him.
For to the anathema, on account of its honor, none dared to draw near;
因為對那奉獻之物(anathema),由於它的尊榮,沒有人敢靠近;
16:21
but from him who was dishonored, all separated themselves out of the opposite intent.
So that the separation is one, and in like manner both this and that are estranged from the many;
因此,這隔絕本是同一回事,這一種和那一種都同樣是與眾人相隔絕的;
16:23
but the manner of the separation is not one, but this one is even the opposite of that.
For from the one they kept away as being consecrated to God, but from the other as being estranged from God and torn away from the Church.
This then Paul also, making it plain, said:
'I could wish to be anathema from Christ.'
And he did not simply say, 'I wished,' but intensifying it, he says even 'I could pray.'
But if it troubles you, since what is said appears too feeble, consider the matter — not only that he wished to be separated, but also the cause for which he wished it — and then you will see the exceeding greatness of his love;
但若這話令你困擾,因為所說的顯得力量不足,那就思想這事本身——不只是他願意被隔絕,還要思想他之所以如此願意的緣由——那時你便會看見他那超乎尋常的愛;
16:29
since he also circumcised, and we attend not to the deed done, but to the intent and the cause of what was done, and for this reason we admire him the more.
And he not only circumcised, but also shaved his head and offered sacrifice;
他不僅行了割禮,還剃了頭、獻了祭;
16:31
and we by no means say that on this account he is a Jew, but rather that for this very reason he was most of all set free from Judaism, and was pure, and a genuine servant of Christ.
Just as, then, when you see him circumcising and sacrificing
you do not on this account condemn him as Judaizing, but rather for this very reason you crown him, as being a stranger to Judaism;
你不因此定他為猶太化,反倒正因這事更要為他加冕,視他為與猶太教無份的人;
16:34
so also, when you see him desiring to become anathema, be not troubled on this account, but rather for this very reason proclaim him aloud, once you have thoroughly learned the cause for which he wills this.
For if we do not examine the causes, we shall call even Elijah a murderer, and Abraham not only a murderer but even a child-slayer;
因為我們若不查究緣由,就連以利亞也要稱為殺人犯,而亞伯拉罕不僅是殺人犯,還是殺子的人;
16:36
and we shall again indict Phinehas and Peter for murder; and not concerning the saints only, but even concerning the God of all things, he who keeps not this rule will harbor many absurd suspicions.
In order, then, that this may not happen, in all such cases let us gather together the cause and the intent and the occasion and everything that pleads in defense of what is done, and thus let us examine the matters;
所以,為要不使這種事發生,在一切這類的事上,讓我們把緣由、用意、時機,以及一切能為所行之事辯解的因素都聚集起來,然後如此查究這些事;
16:38
which very thing we must now do also in the case of this blessed soul.
The cause? Again it is Jesus Himself, the One longed for.
16:40
'And yet it is not for His own sake,' he says;
μου
'for I could wish to be anathema from Him,' he says, 'on behalf of my brethren.'
And this belongs to his humility;
這也出於他的謙卑;
16:43
for he does not wish to appear as saying something great, and as bestowing this favor upon Christ.
Wherefore he also said 'kinsmen,' in order to conceal his advantage;
因此他才說「骨肉之親」,為要隱藏自己的長處;
16:45
since, that he willed the whole thing for Christ's sake, hear what follows;
然而,他所願的這一切其實都是為基督的緣故,這一點請聽下文;
16:46
for having said 'the kinsmen,' he added:
'Whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; whose are the fathers, and of whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed for ever.'
For if it were on behalf of others' believing that he wished to become anathema, he ought also to have prayed this on behalf of the Gentiles;
因為他若是為了叫別人相信才願意成為受咒詛的,他就也該為外邦人這樣祈求;
16:49
but if he prays it on behalf of the Jews only, he shows that he wills it not for Christ's sake, but on account of his kinship with those men.
And indeed, if he had prayed on behalf of the Gentiles only, this would not have appeared in the same way;
誠然,他若只為外邦人祈求,這事就不會這樣顯明出來;
16:51
but since it was on behalf of the Jews only, it is shown purely that he was zealous for this on account of the glory of Christ.
And I know indeed that what is said seems paradoxical to you;
我確實知道,所說的話在你們看來似乎不合常理;
16:53
yet, if you are not disturbed, I shall speedily try to make it clear.
For neither did he say these things which he said at random, but since all were saying and accusing God, that though they had been deemed worthy to be called sons of God, and had received the law, and had known Him before all others, and had enjoyed such great glory, and had served Him before the whole world, and had received promises, and were fathers of the same tribes, and — what is greatest of all — had become forefathers of the Christ Himself (for this is what 'of whom is the Christ according to the flesh' means), yet they had been cast out and dishonored, while in their stead had been brought in men who had never acknowledged Him, those from among the Gentiles;
因為他所說的這些話並非隨口說出,乃是因為眾人都在議論、控告神,說:他們雖曾被稱為神的兒子而蒙尊貴,又領受了律法,比眾人更早認識祂,又享有如此大的榮耀,在普世之前就事奉了祂,又領受了應許,並且是同宗各支派的先祖,而最重要的是,還成了基督自己的先祖(因為「按肉體說基督是從他們出來的」正是這意思),如今卻被棄絕、受羞辱;反倒有那些從未認識祂的外邦人被引進來,取代了他們的地位;
16:55
since therefore, in saying these things, they blasphemed God, Paul, hearing this and being stung, and grieving for the glory of God, prayed to be anathema, if only it were possible, so that those men might be saved, and this blasphemy might be abolished, and God might not seem to have deceived the descendants of those to whom He had promised the gifts.
And that you may learn that it was in grieving over this — lest the promise of God should seem to fail, the promise that says to Abraham, 'To you will I give this land and to your seed' — that he prayed these things;
為要叫你明白他是為此憂傷——惟恐神的應許顯得落空,就是那對亞伯拉罕所說的:「我要把這地賜給你和你的後裔」——他才這樣祈求;
16:57
after saying these things, he added:
'Not as though the word of God had failed.'
showing that he endured to bear all these things for the sake of the word of God;
藉此顯明他甘願忍受這一切,都是為了神的話的緣故;
16:60
that is, the promise made to Abraham.
For just as Moses seemed indeed to be interceding on behalf of the Jews, but did the whole thing on behalf of the glory of God (for 'lest they say,' he says, 'that because He was not able to save them, He led them out to destroy them in the wilderness');
因為正如摩西看似在為猶太人代求,其實他所做的一切都是為神的榮耀(他說:「免得他們說,耶和華因為不能把他們領進所應許之地,就在曠野把他們領出來殺了。」);
16:62
so also Paul, 'lest they say,' he says, 'that the promise of God has fallen through, and that He lied in what He promised, and that His word did not come to pass in deed, I could have wished to become anathema.'
For this very reason he says it is not on behalf of the Gentiles (for neither had it been promised to them, nor had they served Him;
正因如此,他說這並不是為外邦人(因為這事既未曾應許給他們,他們也未曾事奉過祂;
16:64
wherefore they were not blaspheming Him on their account), but on behalf of the Jews, who had both received the promise and had been made His own before all others, he prayed these things.
Do you see that, if he had prayed on behalf of the Gentiles, he would not thus have appeared to be doing it purely for the glory of Christ;
你看見了嗎?他若是為外邦人祈求,就不會這樣顯出他純然是為基督的榮耀而行;
16:66
but since he willed to become anathema on behalf of the Jews, then most of all it was shown that he desires these things for Christ's sake alone.
'Whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the service of God, and the promise.'
'For the law also,' he says, 'is from thence, which speaks concerning Christ, and the covenants made with them are all theirs, and He Himself is from among them, and the fathers who received the promises are all from those men;
他說:「因為那論到基督的律法也是從他們而來,一切與他們所立的約也都是他們的,祂自己也是從他們出來的,領受應許的列祖也全是從那些人而出;
16:69
but nevertheless the contrary has come to pass, and they have fallen away from all the good things.'
'For this reason I am cut to the heart,' he says; 'and if it were possible to be separated from the choir gathered about Christ, and to be estranged — not from His love (God forbid, since even these things he did out of love), but even from that enjoyment and that glory — I would have accepted it, so that my Master might not be blasphemed, because of
not hearing certain men say that the matters had become a mere stage-play;
免得聽見有人說,這些事都成了一場戲;
16:72
'He promised to some, and gave to others;
他向這些人應許,卻賜給了那些人;
16:73
He was born of some, and saved others.'
It had been promised to the forefathers of the Jews, yet, passing over their descendants, He brought those who had never known Him into the good things that belonged to those others;
這應許本是給猶太人的祖先的,然而神卻越過了他們的後裔,將那些從未認識祂的人領進了本屬於那些人的美善之中;
16:75
those men laboured in studying the Law and reading the prophecies, while those who but yesterday came back from the altars and the idols have become greater than they;
那些人辛勤研讀律法、誦讀先知的預言,而這些昨日才從祭壇與偶像那裡回轉過來的人,竟然勝過了他們;
16:76
where in this is providence? Therefore, that such things might not be said of my Master, he says, even if they are said unjustly, I would gladly have fallen even from the Kingdom and from that ineffable glory, and I would have endured all dreadful things, accounting it the greatest of all consolations for my toil, that He who is so longed for should no longer be heard blasphemed.
But if you still do not accept what has been said, consider that many fathers have often accepted such things for their children's sake, and have chosen to be parted from them, and only to see them held in honour, reckoning their children's good repute sweeter than their company.
But since we are far from this love, we cannot even understand the things that are spoken.
For thus there are some who are not even worthy to hear the name of Paul, and who stand so far off and distant from his ardour, that they suppose he was speaking these words concerning a temporal death;
因此有些人,連聽見保羅的名字都不配,他們離他那樣的熾熱是何等遙遠,以致以為他所說的這些話,是指著今生短暫的死亡而言;
16:80
of whom I would say that they are as ignorant of Paul as the blind are of the sun's ray;
論到這等人,我要說:他們對保羅的無知,正如瞎眼之人對日光的無知一樣;
16:81
or rather, far more so.
For he who died daily, and set before himself snowstorms of dangers, and said, 'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or famine, or persecution?'—and not content with what he had said, but soaring beyond heaven, and the heaven of heaven, and angels and archangels, and running over all things above, and grasping together at once things present and things to come, things seen and things conceived, things grievous and things good, the things in both, and leaving out nothing at all; and not even so satisfied, but even supposing another creation of like magnitude that does not exist—
how, after all those things, would he have mentioned a temporal death as though speaking of some great matter?
It is not so, it is not!
rather, such a supposition belongs to worms burrowing in a dunghill.
For if he were saying this, how could he have prayed to be accursed from Christ? For such a death would rather have joined him to the choir of Christ, and made him enjoy that glory.
But indeed there are some who dare to say other things even more ridiculous than these.
For he prayed, they say, not to be a death, but a treasure and an offering to Christ.
And who, even of the utterly worthless and abject, would not pray for this? And how was this to be for the sake of his kinsmen? Leaving aside then these fables and follies—for it is not even worth arguing against them, just as it is not against children who lisp—let us return again to the very text, delighting ourselves in the sea of his love, and everywhere swimming in it without fear, and pondering that unspeakable flame;
這樣的事,就是那些極其卑賤墮落之人,誰不願意呢?而這又怎能是為了他親屬的緣故呢?既然如此,我們就撇下這些神話與胡言(因為與這等話爭辯毫無價值,正如不必與牙牙學語的孩童爭辯一樣),讓我們再回到經文本身,在他愛的汪洋中盡情陶醉,無所畏懼地四處游泳,並默想那不可言喻的火焰;
16:90
or rather, whatever one might say, one will say nothing worthy of it.
For it was wider than any sea, and fiercer than any flame, and no word will be able to proclaim it according to its worth;
因為這愛比任何海洋更寬廣,比任何火焰更熾烈,沒有言語能按其真正的份量將它宣揚出來;
16:92
but he alone knows it who has acquired it with exactness.
Come then, let us again bring the very words into the midst;
那麼來吧,讓我們再把這些話本身擺在中間;
16:94
'For I could wish that I myself were accursed.'
What is 'I myself'? He who had become the teacher of all, who had gathered together countless good deeds, who was awaiting countless crowns, who had so longed for Him as to prefer His love to all things, who was daily consumed with fire for His sake, and reckoned all things secondary to his affection toward Him.
For it was not only his being loved by Christ that concerned him, but also his loving Him exceedingly;
因為他所關切的,不僅是被基督所愛,更是要極其愛祂;
16:97
for on account of this he looked to this alone, and bore all things easily;
正因如此,他單單注目於此,並且輕看地承受一切;
16:98
for one thing he aimed at through all things: to fulfil this good longing.
But since it was not to be so, nor was he to be accursed, he thereafter attempts also to enter upon
a defence against the accusations, and, bringing into the midst the things bruited about by all, to overturn them.
And before entering upon the clear defence of these matters, he already casts down beforehand its seeds.
For when he says, 'Whose is the adoption and the glory and the giving of the Law and the service and the promises,' he means nothing else than that God indeed willed that they should be saved (and this He made plain by what He did before, and by the fact that Christ came from them, and by what He promised to the fathers);
因為當他說:「兒子的名分、榮耀、律法、事奉、應許都是他們的」時候,他所指的無非是:神確實願意他們得救(這一點祂已藉著先前的作為顯明,藉著基督由他們而出顯明,也藉著祂向列祖所應許的顯明);
16:103
but they, out of their own perversity, rejected the benefit.
Therefore he sets down those things too which are indicative only of God's gift, not praises of them;
所以他所列舉的那些事,也只是表明神恩賜的憑據,並非對他們的稱讚;
16:105
for indeed the adoption came of His grace, and the glory and the promises and the Law.
Having considered all these things, and reckoned how great a zeal God together with His Son had shown to save them, he cried aloud and said:
'Who is blessed for ever.'
offering up for all men the thanksgiving to the Only-begotten of God.
For what of it, he says, if others also blaspheme? Yet we who know His hidden things, and the ineffable wisdom, and the great providence, know clearly that He is worthy not of being blasphemed, but of being glorified.
And not content with his own conscience, he attempts thereafter also to lay down an argument, and to use a more vehement word against them;
他不以自己良心的確據為滿足,接下來還試圖提出理據,並用更嚴厲的話來對付他們;
16:111
and he does not press hard upon them until he has first taken away their suspicion.
For that he might not seem to be discoursing as with enemies, he goes on to say:
'Brethren, the good pleasure of my heart, and my supplication to God, is on their behalf, unto salvation;'
and here too, along with the other things he had said, he was preparing the ground so as not to seem to be speaking out of enmity the things he was about to say against them;
在此他也與他先前所說的其他話一同鋪墊,使他即將對他們所說的話不致顯得是出於仇恨;
16:115
wherefore he does not refuse to call them kinsmen and brethren.
For even though it was for Christ's sake that he said what he said, yet he also draws over their mind, and prepares the way for his discourse, and frees himself from all suspicion on account of the things about to be said against them, and only then does he thereafter enter upon the argument sought by the many.
For many were inquiring, as I said before, for what reason those who had received the promise fell away, while those who had never once heard it were saved before them.
Solving this difficulty, then, he brings forward the solution before the objection.
What then? Are you more anxious for God's glory than God is for His own? And, Does He need help from you, so that His word should not fall to the ground? Taking his stand against these things he says:
These things I have said, not as though the word of God has fallen to the ground, but that I might show my affection concerning Christ.
For even with matters having so turned out, we are not at a loss for words on God's behalf, he says, and for showing that the promise stands.
16:122
'To you and to your seed will I give the land;'
and, 'In your seed shall all the nations be blessed.'
Let us see then what sort of thing the seed is, he says;
他說:那麼讓我們看看這後裔究竟是怎樣的;
16:125
for not all who are from him are his seed;
因為凡從他而出的,並不都是他的後裔;
16:126
'For not all who are of Israel, these are Israel;'
'nor because they are Abraham's seed are they all children.'
If then you learn what sort of thing Abraham's seed is, you will see the promise given to his seed, and will know that the word has not fallen away.
What sort of thing then, tell me, is the seed? It is not I who say it, he says, but the Old Testament itself interprets itself, speaking thus:
'In Isaac shall your seed be called.'
What is 'In Isaac'? Interpret it.
That is: it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God;
意思就是:屬肉體的兒女並不是神的兒女;
16:133
but the children of the promise are reckoned as seed.
And behold Paul's understanding and greatness of mind;
你看保羅的悟性與宏大的見識;
16:135
for in interpreting he did not say that 'It is not the children of the flesh who are the children of Abraham,' but 'the children of God;'
因為他在解釋時,並沒有說「屬肉體的兒女不是亞伯拉罕的兒女」,乃是說「神的兒女」;
16:136
joining the old things to the present, and showing that not even Isaac was simply Abraham's child.
And what he means is this:
As many as were begotten after the manner of Isaac, these are children of God and Abraham's seed.
For on account of this He said, 'In Isaac shall your seed be called,' that you might learn that those who are begotten in this manner, the manner according to Isaac, these especially are the seed of Abraham.
How was Isaac begotten? Not according to the law of nature, nor according to the power of the flesh, but according to the power of the promise.
What is 'according to the power of the promise'? 'At this season will I come to you, and Sarah shall have a son.'
This promise then, and the word of God, both fashioned and begot Isaac.
For what of it, though there lay beneath a woman's womb and belly? For it was not the power of the belly, but the might of the promise, that brought forth the child.
So too are we begotten through the words of God;
我們也同樣是藉著神的話語而得重生的;
16:145
for in the pool of the waters it is the words of God that beget us and fashion us anew;
因為在那水的洗池中,正是神的話語使我們得生、將我們重新塑造;
16:146
for being baptized into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we are begotten.
And this begetting is not of nature, but of the promise of God.
For just as, when He had foretold the birth of Isaac, He then brought it to pass,
因為正如祂預先宣告以撒的出生,隨後便使之成就;
16:149
so also He proclaimed our own birth beforehand, many years in advance, through all the prophets, and afterward brought it to accomplishment.
Do you see how great a thing He displayed, and how, having promised something great, He accomplished it with all ease? But should the Jews say that the words, 'In Isaac shall thy seed be called,' mean that those born of Isaac are to be reckoned to him for seed, then the Idumaeans also and all who are descended from him ought to be styled his sons;
你看見祂顯明了何等偉大之事,又是如何應許了偉大之事,卻極其輕易地成就了嗎?倘若猶太人說,「從以撒生的,才要稱為你的後裔」這話的意思,是指凡從以撒所生的都算作他的後裔,那麼以東人以及一切從他而出的,也都當稱為他的兒子了;
16:151
for their forefather Esau was a son of Isaac.
But as it is, not only are they not styled his children, but they are utterly estranged from him.
Do you see that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but that even in nature itself the birth through baptism from above is prefigured? But if you cite the womb to me, I too can point to the water.
But just as here everything belongs to the Spirit, so there too everything belonged to the promise;
然而正如在這裡一切都屬乎聖靈,在那裡一切也都屬乎那應許;
16:155
for the womb was colder than the water, by reason of barrenness and old age.
Let us therefore consider our own high birth with all exactness, and let us display a manner of life worthy of it;
所以,讓我們極其仔細地思量我們自己的高貴出身,並活出與之相稱的生活;
16:157
for it has in it nothing fleshly nor earthly.
For neither sleep, nor the will of the flesh and its embraces, nor the frenzy of desire, but the loving-kindness of God wrought the whole.
And just as there, when the age for it had been despaired of, so also here, when the old age of sins had come upon us, suddenly the man rose up new, and we all became children of God and seed of Abraham.
And not only so, but also Rebecca, when she had conceived by one, even by Isaac our father.
Wherefore he sets in motion many considerations, and endeavours from every side to resolve the difficulty.
For if it be strange and novel that those men fell away after so many promises, far stranger is it that we too entered into their good things, we who expected nothing of the kind.
And it happened just as if a king's son, having by promise the right to succeed to his father's dominion, should be cast out into the rank of the dishonoured, while in his stead a condemned man, laden with countless evils, being brought out of the prison, should receive the sovereignty that pertained to the other.
For what could you say? he asks.
That the son was unworthy? But this man also was unworthy, and much more so.
Therefore they ought either to have been punished together, or honoured together.
Some such thing came to pass also with regard to the Gentiles and to the Jews, and something far more paradoxical than this.
For that all are unworthy, he made plain in what has been said, when he declared:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
因為世人都犯了罪,虧缺了神的榮耀;
16:170
but the novel thing is that, though all were unworthy, the Gentiles alone were saved.
But together with these, one might again be perplexed by yet another point, he says.
For if God was not going to fulfil His promises to them, for what reason did He even promise? For men, indeed, not knowing the future, being often deceived, promise their gifts even to those unworthy to receive them;
因為神若原不打算向他們成就祂的應許,那祂又為何要應許呢?誠然,人既不知將來的事,常常受了矇騙,甚至向那些不配領受的人應許自己的恩賜;
16:173
but He who foreknows both things present and things to come, and clearly understands that they will render themselves unworthy of the promises, and therefore will receive none of the things spoken, for what reason does He even promise?
How then did Paul resolve these things? By showing who is the Israel to whom He made the promise.
For once this is shown, that other point too is demonstrated along with it, namely, that all the promises have been fulfilled.
For they are not all Israel who are of Israel.
For this reason he set down, not the name of Jacob, but that of Israel, which was a token of the just man's virtue and of the gift from above and of his having seen God.
And yet he says that all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.
If then all have sinned, how were some saved and others lost? Because not all were willing to draw near;
那麼,眾人既都犯了罪,何以有些人得救,有些人卻沉淪呢?乃因並非人人都甘願前來;
16:180
for as far as His part was concerned, all were saved;
因為就神那一方面而言,眾人都已得救;
16:181
for indeed all were called.
But for the present he does not set this down, but resolves it out of abundance, and from other examples, bringing another question into the midst, and, just as in what went before, he resolved a very great difficulty by means of another difficulty.
For since it was being inquired how, when Christ was justified, all the rest enjoyed that righteousness, he introduced the case of Adam, saying:
For if by the one man's trespass death reigned, much more shall they who receive the abundance of grace reign in life.
And the case of Adam he does not resolve, but the other he resolves by means of it, and shows that there is greater reason that He who died on their behalf should have authority over them, to do as He wills.
For that when one had sinned all should be punished does not seem to the multitude to happen very much according to reason;
因為一人犯了罪,眾人就都受罰,這在眾人看來,並不十分合乎情理;
16:187
but that when one had wrought righteousness all should be justified, would have more reason in it, and be more befitting to God.
Nevertheless he did not resolve that which was in question;
雖然如此,他仍未解開那所要質問的難處;
16:189
for the more obscure it remained, the more was the Jew put to silence;
因為那難處愈是隱晦不明,那猶太人就愈發被堵住了口;
16:190
and the perplexity concerning this passed over to that, and this becomes clearer from that.
So then here also, out of other perplexities he resolves the matters in question;
照樣,在這裡他也是藉著其他的困惑,來解開那所質問的問題;
16:192
for his contest was with the Jews.
For this very reason the examples which he brought into the midst he does not fully resolve;
正因如此,他所引入的那些例證,並不加以徹底的解答;
16:194
for he was not liable to answer for such things, as in the contention with the Jews;
因為在這些事上,他並不像在與猶太人爭辯時那樣負有答辯之責;
16:195
but all his own points he makes clearer from those.
For why do you marvel, he says, that of the Jews some were saved and others were not saved now? For one may see this happening from of old, even in the case of the patriarchs.
For why is Isaac alone called seed, though he too was the father of Ishmael and of many others besides? But was it because Ishmael was of a bondwoman mother? And what has this to do with the one who begot him? Yet I contend nothing about this;
因為以撒何以獨被稱為後裔,雖然他也是以實瑪利以及其他許多人的父親呢?難道是因為以實瑪利出於為奴的母親麼?可是這與生他的父親有何相干呢?不過我在這一點上並不與人爭辯;
16:198
let this one be cast out on account of his mother;
就讓這一位因著他的母親被逐出吧;
16:199
what should we say concerning those born of Keturah? Were they not free, and born of a free woman? Why then were they not honoured with the same precedence as Isaac? And why do I speak of these? For Rebecca alone became wife to Isaac, and bearing two children, she bore them both of Isaac;
那麼,關於那些從基土拉所生的,我們又當說甚麼呢?他們豈不是自主的,且是從自主的婦人所生的麼?他們何以未曾像以撒那樣得著同等的尊位呢?何況我又何必單提這些人呢?因為利百加獨自作了以撒的妻子,生了兩個兒子,這兩個都是從以撒所生的;
16:200
but nevertheless those who were born, being of the same father, of the same mother, having loosed the same birth-pangs, and being of the same father and the same mother, and besides this twins as well, did not enjoy the same lot.
And yet here you cannot lay the blame on the mother's servile condition, as in the case of Ishmael, nor that the one was born of this womb and the other of another, as in the case of Keturah and of Sarah, where indeed they even shared in the very hour of the birth-pangs.
For this reason Paul also, as though advancing to a clearer example, says: And not only in the case of Isaac did this come to pass, but also Rebecca, when she had conceived by one, even by Isaac our father.
For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of Him that calleth, it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger;
因為雙子還沒有生下來,善惡還沒有做出來,只因要顯明神揀選的旨意,不在乎人的行為,乃在乎那召人的主,神就對利百加說:將來大的要服事小的;
16:204
Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
For what reason then was the one loved and the other hated? Why did the one serve and the other was served? Was it because the one was wicked and the other good? And yet, when they were not yet born, the one was honoured and the other condemned;
那麼,為何這一個蒙愛、那一個被惡呢?為何這一個服事人、那一個被人服事呢?難道是因為這一個邪惡、那一個良善麼?可是他們還沒有生下來,這一個已蒙尊榮、那一個已被定罪了;
16:206
for when they were not yet born, God said, The elder shall serve the younger.
For what reason then did God say this? Because He does not wait, as man does, to behold from the outcome of events who is the good man and who is not such, but even before these things He knows who is the wicked and who is not such.
And this came to pass also in the case of the Israelites, with even greater wonder.
For why do I speak, he says, of Esau and Jacob, of whom the one was wicked and the other good? For in the case of the
Israelites the sin was common to all;
以色列人的事上,那罪乃是眾人所共有的;
16:211
for all worshipped the calf.
But nevertheless some obtained mercy, and others obtained not mercy;
然而,有些人蒙了憐憫,有些人卻未蒙憐憫;
16:213
For I will have mercy, He says, on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.
This one may also observe in the case of those who are punished.
For what could you say concerning Pharaoh, that he was punished and paid so great a penalty? That he was hard-hearted and disobedient.
Was he then the only such one, and no other besides? How then was he so severely punished? And why, moreover, in the case of the Jews did God call those who were not a people a people, and again, why did He not count all worthy of the same honor? 'For though the number of them be as the sand of the sea,' he says, 'a remnant shall be saved.'
And why the remnant alone? Do you see with how great perplexity the matters before us are filled? And that quite reasonably;
為什麼單單是餘數呢?你看,擺在我們面前的這些事充滿了何等的難解之處?而這也是十分合理的;
16:218
for when it is possible to cast one's adversary into perplexity, do not straightway bring forward the solution.
For if he too should appear to be liable to the same ignorance, why do you needlessly endure dangers? Why do you make him more insolent, by drawing the whole matter upon yourself?
For tell me, O Jew, when you are so perplexed and can solve none of these things, how is it that you make trouble for us over the calling of the Gentiles? And yet I for my part have even a just reason to state, on account of which the Gentiles were justified while you fell away.
What then is the reason? Because they sought it by faith, but you as it were by the works of the law.
And by contending over these things you were betrayed on every side.
For being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit themselves to the righteousness of God.
The solution, then, of the whole passage—to state the entire matter, as it were, in summary—is thus brought forward by that blessed soul;
那麼,整段經文的解答——若要概括地把全部道理一言以蔽之——就是由那位有福的心靈這樣提出來的;
16:225
but that these things may also become clearer, let us make our examination of each of the things said, knowing this: that what blessed Paul was eager for was to teach through all that was said, that God alone knows those who are worthy, but no man does, even though he seem to know very well; rather, in many cases the votes of this judgment go astray.
For He who understands the secret things of the mind knows clearly of Himself which are worthy of crowns and which of chastisement and punishment.
For this reason He has both punished many who among men were reckoned to be good, having convicted them, and has crowned those suspected of being wicked, having shown that they were not such;
正因如此,祂既定了許多在人看來算為善的人的罪,加以刑罰,又給那些被疑為惡的人加冠冕,顯明他們並非如此;
16:228
casting His vote not from the opinion of the servants, but from His own exact and incorruptible judgment, and not waiting to see from the outcome of deeds who is base and who is not such.
But nevertheless, that we may not again make the discourse more obscure, let us go to the very words of the Apostle.
'And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac.'
'For I might indeed,' he says, 'have mentioned also those born of Keturah, but I do not;
rather, so as to win the victory with abundance to spare, I bring into the midst those born of one father and one mother.'
For both were from Rebecca, and from Isaac the true son, the approved one, the one preferred above all, concerning whom He said;
'In Isaac shall your seed be called,' he who became the father of us all.
But if that man is our father, then those born of him also ought to be fathers.
Do you see how this comes to pass not in the case of Abraham only, but also in the case of the son himself, and that everywhere it is faith and virtue that shine forth and mark out the true kinship? For from this we learn that the children are called his children not only by the manner of their birth, but also because they are worthy of the virtue of the one who begot them.
For if it were only from the manner of birth, then Esau too ought to have enjoyed the same things as Jacob;
因為倘若單憑出生的方式,那麼以掃也應當與雅各享有同樣的福分;
16:238
for he too was from a deadened womb, and his mother was barren.
But this was not the only thing in question; rather, the manner also, which is no small matter and contributes to our instruction for life.
And he does not say, 'Because the one was good and the other wicked, therefore he was preferred,' lest this should straightway meet him with objection;
他並不說:「因為一個是善的,另一個是惡的,所以這一個蒙了看重」,免得這話立刻遭人反對;
16:241
What then? Are those from the Gentiles rather good than those from the circumcision? For even if the truth of the matter were thus, yet he does not yet lay it down;
那又怎樣呢?難道從外邦人來的比從受割禮來的更善嗎?縱然事情的真相確是如此,然而他此刻還不把它擺出來;
16:242
for indeed it seemed to be somewhat burdensome;
因為這話似乎顯得有些難以承受;
16:243
but upon the knowledge of God
he cast the whole matter, with which no one would have dared to contend, not even if he were exceedingly mad.
'For the children being not yet born,' he says, 'neither having done any good thing, it was said unto her, that The elder shall serve the younger;'
and he shows that the nobility according to the flesh profits nothing, but that one must seek the virtue of the soul, which even before the works God knows.
'For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, it was said unto her, that The elder shall serve the younger.'
For this belongs to foreknowledge, even to choose them out from their very birth-pangs;
因為這正屬乎預知,就是甚至從他們出生的陣痛中便揀選他們;
16:249
'in order that,' he says, 'the election of God might be made manifest, which was according to purpose and foreknowledge;'
for from the first day He both knew and proclaimed both the good man and the one who was not such.
Do not therefore say to me, he says, that you read the law and the prophets, and served so long a time.
For He who knows how to test the soul, He also knows who is worthy to be saved.
Yield therefore to the incomprehensibility of the election;
所以你當讓步於這揀選的不可測度;
16:254
for He alone knows how to crown with exactness.
How many at least seemed to be better than Matthew according to the visible display of works? But He who knew the secret things, and was able to test the aptitude of the mind, recognized even the pearl lying in the mire, and passing by the others and marveling at the beauty of this one, chose him, and adding His own grace to the nobility of his purpose, declared him approved.
For if in these perishable arts, and in all other matters, those skilled in judging do not choose the things set before them from what the laymen decree, but from what they themselves clearly know, and often have dishonored what was approved among the laymen, while approving what had been dishonored;
因為即便在這些易朽的技藝上,以及在其他一切事務上,那些擅於判斷的人也不是根據外行人所投的票來揀選擺在面前之物,而是根據他們自己所清楚知道的;他們往往鄙棄外行人所讚許的,卻認可那被人鄙棄的;
16:257
and horse-tamers have often done this in the case of horses, and the judges of precious stones, and the craftsmen of the other arts too;
馴馬的人論到馬匹也常這樣行,鑒別寶石的人,以及其他各種技藝的匠人也是如此;
16:258
much more will the God who loves mankind, the boundless Wisdom, the One who alone knows all things clearly, not tolerate the surmising of men, but will cast His vote concerning all things from His own exact and unerring wisdom.
For this very reason He chose both a tax collector and a robber and a harlot;
正因如此,祂揀選了稅吏、強盜和妓女;
16:260
but priests and elders and rulers He dishonored and cast out.
This too one may see coming to pass in the case of the martyrs.
For many indeed of those who were utterly despised were crowned in the season of the contests;
因為那許多被人極度輕視的人,反倒在爭戰的時刻得了冠冕;
16:263
and on the contrary, certain ones reckoned by many to be great were tripped up and fell.
Do not therefore demand an accounting from the Creator, nor say;
Why was the one crowned and the other punished? For He knows how to do these things with exactness;
「為何這一個得了冠冕,那一個卻受了刑罰呢?」因為祂知道如何精確地行這些事;
16:266
'Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.'
For that it was justly done, you indeed knew from the end, but He knew clearly even before the end.
For God seeks not only the display of works, but also the nobility of purpose and a right-minded disposition.
For such a man, even if he should ever sin through some circumstance, will quickly raise himself up again;
因為這樣的人,即或偶因某種處境而犯了罪,也必快快地重新站起來;
16:270
and even if he should chance to be lingering in wickedness, he will not be overlooked, but God who knows all things will quickly draw him up;
縱使他偶然停留在惡中,也不至於被撇下不顧,那知道萬事的神必快快地把他拉上來;
16:271
just as the one corrupted in these ways, even if he should seem to do some good thing, will perish, working it with a wicked disposition;
正如那在這些方面已經敗壞的人,即或看似行了某件善事,也必滅亡,因為他是懷著惡念去作的;
16:272
since David too, though he had both murdered and committed adultery, because he was carried away by some circumstance and did not do these things from a deliberate practice of wickedness, quickly washed them away;
既然大衛也是如此,他雖然既殺了人又犯了姦淫,卻因是被某種處境所裹挾,並非出於蓄意行惡的操練才作這些事,就快快地把它們洗淨了;
16:273
the Pharisee, on the other hand, who ventured none of these things, but even prided himself on other good deeds, destroyed everything by his wicked purpose.
What then shall we say? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
Therefore neither in the case of us and the Jews.
Then he brings forward another matter more obscure than this.
And what kind? For He says to Moses;
'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.'
And again he heightens the antithesis, breaking through it in the middle, and loosing it, and making yet another perplexity.
But that what is said may become clearer, it is necessary to interpret it.
'God said,' he says, 'that The elder shall serve the younger,' before the birth-pang.
What then? Is God unjust? By no means.
Therefore hear also what follows;
所以你也要聽下面的話;
16:284
For there, at least, either virtue or vice made the distinction;
因為在那裡,至少還有德行或惡行作出區別;
16:285
but here the transgression was one and the same among all,
the sin of all the Jews, namely the making of the calf; and yet some were punished, while others were not punished.
'I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.'
For it is not thine to know, O Moses, who are worthy of loving-kindness, but yield this to Me.
But if it was not for Moses to know, much less is it for us.
For this reason he did not set down what was said in a bare fashion, but also recalled to whom it was spoken;
因此他並未只是空泛地陳明這話,反而還提到這話是向誰說的;
16:291
for he says, 'He saith to Moses';
因為他說:「祂對摩西說」;
16:292
so that by the dignity of the person he might also put to shame the one who contradicts.
Having therefore stated the solution of the difficulties, he breaks off in the midst, again bringing in another objection, and saying:
'So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.'
For the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, 'Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show My power in thee, and that My name might be declared throughout all the earth.'
For just as there, he says, some were saved and others were punished,
so also here this man was preserved for this very purpose.
Then again he introduces an objection:
'So then He hath mercy on whom He will, and whom He will He hardeneth.'
'Why doth He yet find fault? For who hath resisted His will?' Seest thou how he took pains to make the matter perplexing on all sides? And he does not at once bring in the solution, doing this also to good purpose;
「這樣,祂為甚麼還指責人呢?有誰抗拒祂的旨意呢?」你看他怎樣費心從各方面使這事顯得難解?而他並不立即引入解答,這樣行也是為著益處;
16:301
but he first stops the mouth of the questioner, speaking thus:
'Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God?' And he does this to check his unseasonable curiosity and his great meddlesomeness, and to put a bridle upon him, and to teach him to know what God is and what man is, and how incomprehensible is His providence, and how it surpasses our reasoning, and how all things must yield obedience to Him;
「你這個人哪,你是誰,竟敢向神強嘴呢?」他這樣行,是為要抑制他那不合時宜的好奇與過多的鑽究,給他套上嚼環,並教導他認識神是甚麼、人是甚麼,祂的護理何等不可測度,何等超越我們的思慮,並萬事何等都當順服於祂;
16:303
so that when he has established this in the hearer, and calmed and smoothed his mind, then, bringing in the solution with much ease, he may render what is said readily acceptable to him.
And he does not say that it is impossible to solve such things, but what? That it is unlawful to inquire into such things;
他並不說這樣的事無法解答,乃是說甚麼呢?乃說去探究這樣的事是不合法的;
16:305
for we must yield obedience to the things spoken by God, and not be over-curious,
even if we are ignorant of the reason of them.
'Who art thou that repliest against God?' Seest thou how he brought low, how he cast down the swelling of pride? 'Who art thou?' Art thou a partner in the rule? But hast thou seated thyself as a judge over God? For in comparison with Him thou canst not even be anything at all, not this or that, but not even anything whatever.
For than to say, 'Thou art nothing,' it is much more abasing to say, 'Who art thou?'
And in another way too he shows the greater indignation by the question.
And he did not say, 'Who art thou that answerest God?' but 'that repliest against Him,' that is, that contradicts, that opposes. For to say, 'It ought to have been thus,' and 'It ought not to have been thus,' belongs to one who replies against Him.
Seest thou how he struck fear, how he astounded, how he made him tremble rather than inquire and be over-curious? This is the mark of the best teacher: not to follow everywhere the desire of the disciples, but to lead them to his own purpose, and to pluck up the thorns, and then to cast in the seeds, and not always to answer straightway to the things asked.
'Shall the thing formed say to Him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?'
Here he says this, not doing away with free will, but showing to what extent one must yield obedience to God.
For as regards calling God to account, we ought to be disposed no otherwise than the clay.
For not only ought we not to contradict, nor to inquire, but not even to utter a word at all, nor so much as to conceive a thought, but to be like that lifeless thing which follows the hands of the potter, and is carried about wheresoever he wishes.
For only for this did he take the illustration, not for the display of a way of life, but for the subjection of obedience and silence.
And this must be observed everywhere, that we ought not to take all the illustrations in their entirety, but selecting the useful part of them, and that for which they were adduced, we should let all the rest go.
As therefore when it says, 'He couched, he lay down as a lion,' we take the unconquerable and fearful quality, not the savage nor any other of the things that belong to the lion;
所以正如經上說「他蹲伏、臥如公獅」時,我們取那不可戰勝與可畏之處,而非那兇殘之性,也非公獅所具的其他任何特徵;
16:319
'I will meet them as a bear bereaved of her whelps'—the punitive quality;
又如「我要遇見他們,如喪子的母熊」——取那施刑報復之處;
16:320
and when it says, 'Our God is a consuming fire,' the consuming quality that comes from chastisement;
又當經上說「我們的神乃是烈火」時,取那從刑罰而來的吞滅之處;
16:321
so then here also we must needs understand the clay and the potter and the vessels in this way.
And when he goes on and says, 'Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?'—do not suppose that these things were said by Paul with reference to a principle of creation, nor to a necessity of moral choice, but to the authority and diversity of dispensations.
For if we do not understand it thus, many absurdities will follow.
For indeed, if the discourse here is about moral choice, then He Himself will be the maker both of the good and of those who are not such, and man will be free of all blame;
因為若這裡所論的是意志的抉擇,那麼祂自己就成了善人與那不善之人的造作者,而人就全然無可指責了;
16:325
and Paul will be seen thus at variance with himself, he who everywhere crowns the freedom of choice.
He wishes therefore to establish nothing else here than to persuade the hearer to yield to God with all excess of submission, and never at any time to demand of Him an account.
For just as the potter, he says, out of the same lump makes what he wills, and there is none to contradict;
他說,正如窯匠從同一團泥裡隨己意造作,而無人反駁;
16:328
so also, when God out of the same race of men punishes some and honours others, do not be over-curious, nor meddlesome, but only worship, and imitate the clay;
照樣,當神從人類同一族類中刑罰一些人、尊榮另一些人時,你不要過分鑽究,也不要多管,只當敬拜,並效法那泥;
16:329
and just as it follows the hands of the potter, so also do thou follow the purpose of Him who orders these things.
For He does nothing simply, nor at random, even if thou art ignorant of the hidden reason of His wisdom.
But thou allowest him to make different things out of the same lump, and dost not accuse him;
然而你容許那窯匠從同一團泥裡造出不同之物,並不控告他;
16:332
yet thou demandest of God an account of the punishments and the honours, and dost not concede to Him to know who is worthy and who is not such, but, because the same lump is of the same substance, thou deemest that the moral choices too are the same.
And of how great madness is this!
And yet, even in the case of the potter, the dishonoured and the honourable is not from the lump, but from the use of those who handle them, even as here also it is from the moral choice.
Nevertheless, as I said before, we must take the illustration in this one point only, that we ought not to contradict God, but to yield to the incomprehensibility of His wisdom.
For examples ought to be greater than the matters proposed, and than the things on account of which they are brought into the midst, so as the more to move the hearer;
因為所舉的例子當比所論的事更大,也當比那引用它時所為的事更大,好使聽者更受感動;
16:337
since if it were not greater and did not have the more excess, it would not be able to strike home as it ought, nor to shame the one who contradicts.
So then he thus stopped their unseasonable contentiousness with the fitting excess;
他就這樣以恰當的超越之勢,塞住了他們那不合時宜的爭辯;
16:339
and for the rest he brings in also the solution.
What then is the solution? 'What if God, willing to show His wrath and to make known His power, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction;
那麼解答是甚麼呢?「倘若神要顯明祂的忿怒,彰顯祂的權能,就多用忍耐寬容那可怒、預備遭毀滅的器皿;
16:341
and that He might make known the riches of His glory upon the vessels of mercy, which He had before prepared unto glory;
又要將祂榮耀的豐富,彰顯在那蒙憐憫、早預備得榮耀的器皿上;
16:342
even us, whom He also called, not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles?'
And what he means is somewhat of this kind:
that is, that man kindles the wrath of God through his own hardness;
就是說,那人藉著自己的頑梗,激動了神的忿怒;
16:345
for having enjoyed much long-suffering, he did not become better, but remained incorrigible.
Wherefore also he did not call him a vessel of wrath only, but also 'fitted for destruction';
因此他不但稱他為可怒的器皿,還稱他為「預備遭毀滅的」;
16:347
that is, made complete, but from himself and by his own doing.
For neither did God leave undone any of the things fitted to lead to that man's correction, nor did the man himself leave undone any of the things that ruin him and deprive him of all pardon.
But nevertheless God, even knowing these things, endured with much long-suffering, wishing to lead him to repentance;
然而神即使知道這些事,仍多用忍耐寬容,願意領他悔改;
16:350
for if He had not wished this, He would not even have been long-suffering.
But since he was not willing to make use of the long-suffering unto repentance, but made himself complete unto wrath, He used him for the correction of others, by the chastisement inflicted on him making others more diligent, and by this displaying His own power.
For that God does not wish His power to be made known in this way, but rather in another way, through those whom He benefits, through those to whom He does good, this too He showed throughout, from the beginning.
For if Paul does not wish to appear powerful in this way,
For it is not that we may appear approved, he says, but that you may do what is good.
But since He was longsuffering, that He might lead him to repentance, and yet that man did not repent, He bore with him for a long time, at once displaying His own kindness and at the same time His power, in case that man might be willing to gain some profit from this great longsuffering.
Just as, then, by punishing this man who remained incorrigible He showed His own power,
so by having mercy on those who had sinned much and repented He made manifest His own love for mankind.
Yet he did not say 'His love for mankind,' but 'His glory,' showing that this above all is the glory of God, and that He was zealous for this before all else.
But when he says, 'Which He had before prepared unto glory,' he does not affirm that the whole is of God;
但當他說「這器皿是他預先豫備得榮耀的」時,他並不是說一切全在於神;
16:360
for if this were so, nothing would have prevented all men from being saved;
因為若是如此,就沒有甚麼能攔阻眾人得救;
16:361
rather, he again points to His foreknowledge, and removes the barrier between Jews and Gentiles.
And from this too he furnishes the argument with no small defence once more.
For not only among the Jews did some perish and some were saved, but this also happened among the Gentiles;
因為不單在猶太人中有的滅亡、有的得救,就是在外邦人中也是如此;
16:364
wherefore he does not say 'all the Gentiles,' but 'from among the Gentiles';
所以他不說「一切外邦人」,乃說「從外邦人中」;
16:365
nor 'all the Jews,' but 'those from among the Jews.'
As, then, Pharaoh became a vessel of wrath through his own transgression,
so these too became vessels of mercy through their own right disposition.
For even if the greater part is of God, nevertheless we too have contributed some little thing.
Therefore he did not say 'vessels of good deeds,' nor 'vessels of boldness,' but 'vessels of mercy,' showing that the whole is of God.
For even the saying, 'Not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth,' though it is spoken by way of contrast, yet being uttered by Paul, brings no perplexity at all.
For when he says, 'Not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth,' he does not take away free choice, but shows that the whole is not of man, but that he needs the grace from above.
For one must indeed both will and run, yet take confidence not in one's own labours, but in the love of God for mankind;
因為人固然既要定意又要奔跑,卻不當倚靠自己的勞苦,而當倚靠神愛世人的心;
16:373
'Yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.'
For since they were reproaching them with this, that they were saved by grace, and thought thereby to put them to shame, out of his great abundance he removes this suspicion.
For if the matter brought glory to God, much more did it bring glory to those through whom God was glorified.
Consider his right disposition and his unspeakable wisdom.
For though he might have avoided bringing forward Pharaoh in the discourse concerning those who are punished, and instead brought forward the sinners from among the Jews, and thus made the argument yet clearer, and shown that where the fathers are the same, where the sins are the same, some perished while others obtained mercy, and thus persuaded them no longer to be perplexed, even if some from among the Gentiles were saved while Jews perished—
yet, that he might not make the discourse burdensome, he introduces the proof of punishment from the barbarian, so as not to be compelled to call them vessels of wrath;
然而,他為使論述不致沉重難堪,便從那外邦異族之人引出懲罰的例證,好叫自己不必被迫稱他們為可怒的器皿;
16:379
but those who obtain mercy he draws from the multitude of the Jews.
And yet he sufficiently makes his defence even on God's behalf, that although He knew full well that this man was fashioning himself into a vessel of destruction, nevertheless He brought forward what was His own—forbearance, longsuffering, and not simply longsuffering, but much longsuffering;
並且他也充分地為神辯護,說神雖然明明知道這人正在把自己塑造成滅亡的器皿,卻仍舊獻上了屬乎自己的——寬容、忍耐,而且不是尋常的忍耐,乃是極大的忍耐;
16:381
yet nevertheless He was unwilling to exercise it upon the Jews.
Whence, then, are some vessels of wrath, and others of mercy? From their own free choice.
But God, being exceedingly good, displays the same kindness toward both.
For He had mercy not only on those who are being saved, but also on Pharaoh, so far as His own part was concerned;
因為就神自己的分而言,他不單憐憫那些得救的人,也憐憫了法老;
16:385
for both they and he enjoyed the same longsuffering.
And if he was not saved, the whole is contrary to His will;
他若沒有得救,這全然是違背神旨意的;
16:387
for as far as it depended on God, he had no less than those who were preserved.
Having therefore rendered the solution to the question by means of the facts themselves, so as to make the argument trustworthy from another quarter also, he brings in the prophets foretelling these very things.
For Hosea also, he says, wrote these things of old, speaking thus:
'I will call them My people, which were not My people;
「那本來不是我子民的,我要稱他們為我的子民;
16:391
and her beloved, which was not beloved.'
For that they might not say, 'You are deceiving us by speaking these things,'
he summoned Hosea as a witness, crying aloud and saying:
'I will call them My people, which were not My people.'
For who were the 'not My people'? Plainly the Gentiles.
And who was the 'not beloved'? Again the same.
But nevertheless he declared that they should be both 'My people' and 'Beloved' and sons of God.
'For there,' he says, 'shall they be called sons of the living God.'
But if they should say that this was spoken concerning those who believed from among the Jews, even so the argument stands.
For if, upon those who had been unthankful after many benefits, and had been estranged, and had lost even the state of being a people, so great a change came to pass, what was there to hinder even those who had not been estranged after being made God's own, but were from the beginning aliens, from being called, and, upon obeying, being counted worthy of the same things? Having therefore brought forward Hosea, he is not content with this alone, but after him introduces Isaiah also, uttering things in harmony with this.
For Isaiah crieth, he says, concerning Israel;
他說,因為以賽亞指著以色列人大聲喊著;
16:402
that is, he proclaims with boldness, and does not shrink back.
'Why then do you accuse us, when they proclaim these things beforehand more clearly than a trumpet? What then does Isaiah cry? Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved.'
Do you see that he too says that not all shall be saved, but those worthy to be saved? For 'I am not abashed at the multitude,' he says, 'nor does the race, thus poured out abroad, put me to shame; but I save those alone who present themselves worthy.'
And he did not simply mention the sand of the sea, but was reminding them of an ancient promise, of which they had made themselves unworthy.
'Why then are you troubled, as though the promise had failed, when all the prophets declare that not all are of the number of those who are saved?' Then he also tells the manner of the salvation.
Do you see the prophetic exactness and the apostolic understanding—what a testimony he brought forward, how exceedingly fitting? For this passage shows us not only that there are some who are saved and not all, but it also adds how they shall be saved.
How then shall they be saved? And how will God count them worthy of the benefit? 'By finishing and cutting short the account in righteousness, for a short account will the Lord make upon the earth.'
There is no need of a circuit, nor of toils, nor of the hardship that comes from the works of the law, but with great brevity shall salvation come.
In a few words it holds salvation.
'For if thou shalt confess with thy mouth,' he says, 'the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.'
Do you see what it is, 'A short account will the Lord make upon the earth'? And the marvellous thing is that this short account brought not salvation only, but also righteousness.
'And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we should have been as Sodom, and been made like unto Gomorrah.'
Here again he shows something else, that not even those few were saved of themselves.
For these too would have perished and suffered the fate of Sodom—that is, they would have endured utter destruction.
For those others too all perished root and branch, and did not leave behind even the least seed of themselves;
因為那些人也都連根拔起地滅亡了,連一點餘種都沒有留下;
16:417
and these likewise, he says, would have become as those, had not God used great goodness, and preserved them through faith.
And this happened also in the visible captivity;
這事在那有形可見的擄掠中也曾發生;
16:419
for the greater part were led away and perished, and only a few were preserved.
'What shall we say then?' he says. 'That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith;
他說:「這樣,我們可說甚麼呢?那本來不追求義的外邦人反得了義,就是那本乎信的義;
16:421
but Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.'
Here at length is the clearest solution.
For since he had shown it also from the facts—
For not all who are of Israel are Israel.
And drawing upon the ancestors of Jacob and Esau, and upon the prophets, he brings forward the most authoritative solution from Hosea and Isaiah, having first heightened the difficulty.
For there are two things in question: that the Gentiles attained, and that they attained without pursuing—that is, without striving for it.
And again, in the case of the Jews, the two difficulties are alike: that Israel did not attain, and that though striving it did not attain.
Wherefore also he expresses himself more emphatically in his very words.
For he did not say that they 'possessed' righteousness, but 'attained' it.
For this is what is chiefly new and paradoxical: that he who pursued did not attain, while he who did not pursue attained.
And he seems to grant them a favour by saying 'pursuing.'
But afterwards he deals the decisive blow.
For since he has a strong solution to bring forward, he is not at all afraid of making the objection more severe.
For this reason he does not even discuss faith and the righteousness that comes from it, but shows that, even before faith and in their own domain, they were defeated and condemned.
For you, O Jew, he says, did not even find the righteousness that is of the Law;
他說:猶太人哪,你連那從律法而來的義也沒有尋見;
16:436
for you transgressed it, and became liable to the curse.
But these who came not by way of the Law, but by another road, found a greater righteousness than this—the one that is from faith.
which indeed is what he said above as well.
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has whereof to glory, but not before God;
showing that this righteousness is greater than that one.
Before, then, I was saying that there are two things in question; but now the points of inquiry have become three:
that the Gentiles both found righteousness, and found it without pursuing, and found one greater than that which is of the Law.
These same three points are again raised as difficulties, from the opposite side, in the case of the Jews: that Israel did not find, and though striving did not find, and did not find even the lesser righteousness.
Having therefore cast the hearer into perplexity, he next brings in the brief solution, and states the cause of all that has been said.
What then is the cause? Because it was not of faith, but as it were of works of the Law.
This is the clearest solution of the whole passage, which, had he stated it straightway at the outset, would not have been so readily received;
but since he set it down after many difficulties and demonstrations and proofs, and employed countless preliminary corrections, he thereby made it more easily grasped and more readily received.
For this, he says, is the cause of their ruin: that they willed to be justified not of faith, but as it were of works of the Law.
And he did not say 'of works,' but 'as it were of works of the Law,' showing that they did not possess even this righteousness.
For they stumbled at the stone of stumbling, as it is written:
Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence;
and everyone who believes on him shall not be put to shame.
Do you see again how the boldness of confidence is from faith, and how the gift is universal? For it was spoken not of the Jews only, but of the whole race of mankind.
For 'everyone,' he says—be he Jew, or Greek, or Scythian, or Thracian, or whosoever else may believe—shall enjoy great boldness of confidence.
And the marvellous thing about the prophet is that he said not only that they would believe, but also that they would disbelieve;
那先知奇妙之處,就在於他不但說有人要信,也說有人要不信;
16:456
for to stumble is to disbelieve.
As therefore above he made plain both those who perish and those who are saved, saying, 'Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved;'
所以,正如他在前面藉著說「以色列子孫的數目雖如海沙,得救的不過是剩下的餘數」而顯明了那些沉淪的和那些得救的;
16:458
and, 'Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we should have been as Sodom;'
又說「若不是萬軍之主給我們存留餘種,我們早已像所多瑪了」;
16:459
and, 'He called not only from among the Jews, but also from among the Gentiles;'
並說「他所召的不但是從猶太人中,也是從外邦人中」;
16:460
so also here he says that some will believe, while others will stumble;
照樣,他在這裡也說:有些人要信,有些人卻要絆跌;
16:461
and stumbling comes from not giving heed, from gaping after other things.
Since therefore these too gave heed to the Law, they stumbled at the stone.
And he calls it a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence in respect of the mind and the end of those who did not believe.
Have then the things spoken become clear to you, or do they still need much explanation? For my part, I think they are easy to survey for those who have paid attention;
那麼,這些所講的,在你們已經明白了呢,還是仍需許多解釋?我以為,對那些留心聽的人,這些是容易看得清楚的;
16:465
but if they have escaped any, it is possible, by meeting privately, to inquire and to learn.
For this very reason I have extended the exposition of the discourse to greater length, that I might not be compelled, by cutting apart the continuity of the sequence, to mar the clearness of what is said.
Wherefore also I will here bring the discourse to a close, without having discussed with you anything of the more ethical matters, as is our custom, lest I should again overcloud your memory with the multitude of the things spoken.
It is now high time to bring it to the fitting end, sealing up the discourse with the doxology of the God of all things, having in common taken our rest—
both we who speak and you who hear—let us send up glory to him, for his is the kingdom and the power and the glory unto the ages.
