What then? Are we better than they? Not at all;
這卻怎麼樣呢?我們比他們強嗎?決不是的;
7:2
for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
因為我們已經指控,無論是猶太人是希臘人,都在罪惡之下;
7:3
There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God.
They have all turned aside, together they have become unprofitable;
他們都偏離正路,一同變為無用;
7:5
there is none that does good, no, not so much as one.
Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips;
他們的喉嚨是敞開的墳墓;他們用舌頭弄詭詐;嘴唇裏有虺蛇的毒氣;
7:7
whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood;
滿口是咒罵苦毒;他們的腳飛跑去流人的血;
7:8
and misery is in their ways, and the way of peace they have not known;
所經過的路便有毀滅和苦楚;他們並不曉得平安的路;
7:9
there is no fear of God before their eyes.
He accused the Greeks, he accused the Jews;
他既已指控了希臘人,又指控了猶太人;
7:11
it was consistent that he should thereafter speak of the righteousness which is through faith.
For if neither the law of nature profited, nor the written law accomplished anything more, but both weighed down those who used them not as they ought, and showed them to be deserving of a greater punishment, then the salvation which is through grace is henceforth necessary.
Speak of it then, O Paul, and show it.
But he does not yet take courage, being suspicious of the effrontery of the Jews, but again brings the discourse round to the accusation of them, and first introduces David as an accuser, saying at length these things which Isaiah said all in brief, thus forging a strong bridle for them, so that none of his hearers, being sufficiently forestalled by the accusations of the prophets, might leap away nor start aside any longer from the arguments exercised concerning the faith.
For indeed the prophet sets down three excesses: that all together were doing evil, saying so, and that they did not mingle good deeds with the evil, but pursued wickedness alone, and that they did this with all intensity.
Then, lest they should say, What then, if these things were spoken to others? he added:
Now we know that whatsoever the law says, it speaks to those who are within the law.
For this reason, after Isaiah who confessedly directed his words against them, he brought in David, in order to show that these things too are of the same sequence.
For what necessity was there, he says, for the prophet who was sent for your correction to accuse others? For neither was the law given to others, but to you.
And why did he not say, We know that whatsoever the prophet says, but, Whatsoever the law speaks? Because Paul is accustomed to call the whole Old Testament law.
Do you not hear the law, that Abraham had two sons? And here he called the Psalms law, saying:
We know that whatsoever the law says, it speaks to those who are within the law.
Then he shows that these things are not spoken merely for the sake of accusation, but that the law might once again prepare the way for the faith.
So great is the harmony of the Old with the New, that even the accusations and the reproofs came about entirely for this purpose: that the door of faith might be opened in splendour before the hearers.
For since this above all destroyed the Jews, namely, thinking highly of themselves;
因為那最能敗壞猶太人的,正是這一點:他們自視甚高;
7:26
which very thing he also said as he went on, that Being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit themselves to the righteousness of God;
the law and the prophet, anticipating this, cast down their high thoughts beforehand, and repressed their swelling pride, in order that, coming to a consciousness of their own sins, and emptying out all their arrogance, and seeing themselves in peril of the utmost dangers, they might with much eagerness run to Him who bestows on them the remission of their sins, and receive grace through faith.
This then is what Paul also here hinted at, when he said:
We know that whatsoever the law says, it speaks to those who are within the law;
that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become subject to the judgment of God.
For here he shows that they are destitute of the boldness which comes from works, but boastful and shameless only in their words.
Wherefore also he used the expression fittingly, saying, That every mouth may be stopped, indicating their shameless and hardly restrained boasting, and their tongue which is stopped only with strictness;
因此他也恰如其分地使用了這說法,說「好塞住各人的口」,藉此點明他們那無恥而難以遏制的誇大之詞,以及他們那唯有嚴加約束才能封住的舌頭;
7:33
for like an unbearable torrent, so did this rush forth;
因為這舌頭正如一股無法抵擋的急流,這樣地奔湧而出;
7:34
but the prophet dammed it up.
But when Paul says, That every mouth may be stopped, he does not mean this, that they sinned for this reason, that their mouth might be stopped, but that they were reproved for this reason, that they might not be ignorant that in this very thing they were sinning.
And all the world may become subject to the judgment of God.
He did not say, The Jew, but, All mankind.
For the words, That every mouth may be stopped, are a covert allusion to those men, even if it is not plainly set down, so that the discourse might not become too harsh;
因為「好塞住各人的口」這句話乃是隱隱指向那些人的,縱然沒有明明地說出來,為要叫這番話不至於過於嚴厲;
7:39
but the words, That all the world may become subject to the judgment of God, are spoken concerning both Jews and Greeks alike.
And this is no small thing toward putting down their
arrogance, when here too they have nothing more than the Greeks, but are alike delivered over, so far as concerns the word of salvation.
For he properly may be called liable to judgment who is not able to suffice for his own defense, but stands in need of another's help;
因為那真正可稱為該受審判的人,乃是不能自為辯護、反倒需要他人相助的人;
7:43
such was our whole condition also, since we had lost the things that make for salvation.
For 'through the law is the knowledge of sin.'
Again he made a spring upon the law, yet with sparing;
他又再次躍向律法,然而是帶著寬容而發的;
7:46
for what is said is no accusation of it, but of the sloth of the Jews;
因為所說的並非控告律法,乃是控告猶太人的怠惰;
7:47
nevertheless he has been earnest here, since he is about to introduce the discourse concerning faith, to show that it had been very greatly weakened.
For if you boast in the law, he says, it rather puts you to shame;
他說,倘若你以律法自誇,律法反倒使你更加羞愧;
7:49
this it is that makes a public show of your sins.
But he did not put it so harshly, but again with abatement;
for 'through the law is the knowledge of sin.'
Therefore the punishment also is the greater, but it falls upon the Jews.
For the law effected this, to make sin manifest to you, but what remained thereafter was yours, namely to flee it;
因為律法所成就的,乃是叫罪向你顯明,而其後所餘下的便是你的本分,就是要逃避罪;
7:54
having then not fled it, you rather drew punishment upon yourself, and the law's achievement became for you the occasion of greater chastisement.
When therefore he had heightened the fear, then at length he brings in the things of grace, having established in them a great longing for the remission of sins, and he says:
'But now apart from the law a righteousness of God has been made manifest.'
He uttered a great thing here, one needing much establishing.
For if those who lived in the law not only did not escape punishment, but were even the more weighed down, how is it possible apart from the law not only to flee vengeance, but even to be justified? For he has set down two extreme things here: both the being justified, and the attaining of these good things apart from the law.
For this reason he did not say simply 'righteousness,' but 'the righteousness of God,' showing from the dignity of the person both that the gift is greater and that the promise is able to be fulfilled;
為此他不單說「義」,乃說「神的義」,藉著那位格的尊貴顯明這恩賜更為浩大,這應許也必能成就;
7:60
and he did not say 'was given,' but 'has been made manifest,' cutting off the charge of innovation;
他也不說「賜下了」,乃說「顯明了」,藉此除去了標新立異的指控;
7:61
for that which is made manifest is made manifest as something old and hitherto hidden.
And not this only, but by what follows also he shows that this is not something recent;
不但如此,他更藉著下文顯明這並非近日之新事;
7:63
for having said 'has been made manifest,' he added, 'being witnessed by the law and the prophets.'
Be not troubled, he says, because it has now been given, nor disturbed as at some new and strange matter;
他說,你不要因它如今才賜下而驚惶,也不要因它彷彿是新奇陌生之事而慌亂;
7:65
for from of old both the law and the prophets foretold it.
And some things he showed by this establishing, while others he is about to show, in the foregoing having brought forward Habakkuk saying:
'The just shall live by faith;'
while in what comes after these, he brings forward Abraham and David, themselves also discoursing to us concerning these matters.
For great was the account of these persons among them;
因為這兩位人物在他們中間享有極大的名望;
7:70
for the one was a patriarch and prophet, the other a king and prophet;
因為一位是先祖兼先知,另一位是君王兼先知;
7:71
and the promises concerning these things had been made to both these men.
Wherefore also Matthew, at the beginning of the Gospel, makes mention of both these men first, and then in due order brings in the forefathers.
For having said, 'The book of the generation of Jesus Christ,' he did not wait to say, after Abraham, both Isaac and Jacob, but together with Abraham he made mention of David;
因為他既說了「耶穌基督的家譜」,便不待在亞伯拉罕之後接著說以撒和雅各,反倒把大衛與亞伯拉罕一同提說;
7:74
and what is indeed marvelous, that he set down David even before Abraham, saying thus:
and then he began to reckon up Isaac and Jacob and all that follow in order.
Wherefore the Apostle also here continually turns them about, and says:
'But a righteousness of God witnessed by the law and the prophets.'
But lest anyone should say, And how is it that we are saved when they contribute nothing to the matter in hand? he shows that we too bring in no small thing toward this, I mean faith.
Accordingly, having said 'the righteousness of God,' he added, 'through faith, unto all and upon all that believe.'
Again here the Jew is troubled, having nothing special beyond the rest, but being numbered with the whole world.
In order then that he may not experience this, he again restrains him by fear, adding:
For do not tell me, that so-and-so is a Greek, so-and-so a Scythian, so-and-so a Thracian;
他說,你不要對我說:某某是希臘人,某某是西古提人,某某是色雷斯人;
7:83
for all are in the same case.
7:84
For even if you received a law, one thing
only did you learn from the law, namely to know sin, not to flee it.
Then, lest they should say, that Even if we sinned, yet not so as those did, he added:
'And come short of the glory of God.'
So that even if you did not sin the same things as the rest, yet you are alike deprived of the glory;
所以,你縱然沒有犯與別人一樣的罪,卻同樣被剝奪了那榮耀;
7:89
for you are of those who have given offense;
因為你是屬於那些觸犯了神的人;
7:90
and he who has given offense is not of those who are glorified, but of those who are put to shame.
for I said these things for this reason, not that I might cast you into despair, but that I might show the loving-kindness of the Master.
'Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness.'
See through how many things he establishes what has been said.
First, from the dignity of the person;
第一,是從那位格的尊貴而論;
7:95
for it is not a man who works these things, so that he should grow weak, but God who is able to do all things;
因為施行這些事的並非一個人,以致會軟弱無力,乃是那無所不能的神;
7:96
'for it is a righteousness of God,' he says.
Secondly, from the law and the prophets;
第二,是從律法和先知而論;
7:98
for do not, because you heard 'apart from the law,' be afraid;
因為你不要因為聽見「在律法以外」就害怕;
7:99
for this seems good even to the law itself.
Thirdly, from the sacrifices that were in the Old Testament;
第三,是從舊約中那些祭物而論;
7:101
for on this account he said, 'in his blood,' reminding them of those sheep and calves.
For if the slayings of irrational beasts, he says, loosed sins, much more this blood.
And he did not say simply 'redemption,' but 'full redemption,' so that we should no more return again to the same slavery.
And he calls it a propitiation for this very reason, showing that if the type had so great strength, much more will the reality display the same.
And showing again that this is not something newer, nor novel, he says, 'set forth.'
And having said, 'God set forth,' and shown the achievement of the Father, he shows that the same is the Son's also;
他既說了「神設立」,顯明這是父的作為,也同時顯明這也是子的作為;
7:107
for the Father set forth, but Christ accomplished the whole in his own blood.
'For a demonstration of his righteousness.'
What is 'a demonstration of righteousness'? Just as a demonstration of wealth is not merely that one should be rich oneself, but should also make others rich;
何謂「顯明義」呢?正如財富的彰顯,不僅在於自己富足,更在於使他人也得富足;
7:110
And it is a proof of His life, that He is not only Himself living, but also gives life to the dead;
這也是祂生命的明證:祂不僅自己是活的,更能使死人復活;
7:111
and of His power, that He is not only Himself mighty, but also strengthens the weak;
也是祂能力的明證:祂不僅自己有能力,更能使軟弱的人剛強;
7:112
so too it is a demonstration of His righteousness, that He is not only Himself righteous, but also suddenly makes righteous others who had rotted away in their sins.
Interpreting this very thing, then, he himself went on to say what the demonstration is:
'That He might be just, and the justifier of him who is of the faith of Jesus.'
7:115
For it is not of works, but of faith.
Do not flee, then, from the righteousness of God;
所以你不要逃避神的義;
7:117
for its benefit is twofold, in that it is both light to bear, and set before all men alike;
因為它的益處是雙重的:既是輕省的,又是擺在眾人面前、人人可得的;
7:118
neither be ashamed nor blush for it.
For if He Himself displays this as His own doing, and, as one might say, glories and prides Himself in it, how is it that you sink down and hide your face over that in which your Master is glorified? Having therefore lifted up the hearer by saying that these things are a demonstration of the righteousness of God, he again by fear urges on the man who shrinks back and hesitates to draw near, speaking thus:
'Because of the passing over of the sins that were formerly committed.'
Do you see how continually he reminds them of their transgressions? For above he said, 'For by the law is the knowledge of sin,' and after that, that 'All have sinned,' but here more forcibly.
For he did not say, 'because of the sins,' but 'because of the passing over,' that is to say, the deadness.
For there was no longer any hope of health, but just as a body that has been paralyzed needed a hand from on high;
因為已經沒有得醫治的指望了,倒像是一具癱瘓的身體,需要從上而來的一隻手;
7:124
so too the soul, having been made dead.
And what is indeed the more grievous, this very thing which he places as though it were the cause, he shows to be the greater charge.
But what is this? That the passing over took place in the forbearance of God.
'For neither could you say,' he means, 'that you did not enjoy much forbearance and goodness.'
And the words 'at this present time' are meant to show the great forbearance and lovingkindness.
For 'when we had been despaired of,' he says, 'and it was the season for the sentence, and the evils had grown great, and the sins had been filled up, then He displayed His own power, that you might learn how great with Him is the abundance of righteousness.'
For had this been done at the beginning, it would not have appeared so marvelous and paradoxical as now, when every remedy had failed.
'Where then is the boasting? It is excluded,' he says.
'By what law? Of works? Nay, but by the law of faith.'
Great is the struggle for Paul to show that faith had such strength as the law never even imagined.
For since he had said that God justifies man from faith, he again lays hold of the law.
And he does not say, 'Where then are the good deeds of the Jews? Where is their righteous conduct?' but 'Where is the boasting?' everywhere showing that they only talked big, as though they had something more than others, while displaying no work at all.
And having said, 'Where then is the boasting?' he did not say 'It was made to vanish and perished,' but 'It was excluded,' which rather belongs to unseasonableness;
他既說「那誇口在哪裡呢?」卻沒有說「它消失了、滅亡了」,乃說「它被隔絕了」,這反倒是指它失了時機而言;
7:137
for just as when the judgment is at hand, those who wish to repent no longer have the opportunity;
因為正如審判臨近之時,想要悔改的人就再沒有機會了;
7:138
so too, when the sentence has now been pronounced, and all are about to perish, and He who by grace looses these terrors is come, those men no longer had any opportunity to put forward the correction that comes from the law.
For if it had been necessary to rely on these things, it ought to have been before His coming;
因為倘若真該倚靠這些,就當在祂降臨以先;
7:140
but when He who saves through faith had come, the season for such struggles was thenceforth done away.
但當那藉信心施行拯救的主既已來到,那憑功勞爭競的時機從此就被廢去了;
7:141
for as though all had been convicted, so He saves by grace.
7:142
Wherefore also He came now, that they might not say:
'Had He come at the beginning, it would have been possible to be saved through the law, and by our own labors and good deeds.'
So then, to stop this shamelessness of theirs, He waited a long time, so that after they had been clearly proved through all things to be insufficient for themselves, He might then save them through His own grace.
Wherefore also above, when saying, 'For a demonstration of the righteousness,' he added, 'at this present time.'
But if some should gainsay, they do the very same as if a man who had greatly sinned and had been unable to make his defense in court, but had been condemned and was about to be punished, and then, being released by a royal act of grace, should after his release shamelessly boast, saying that he had committed no sin at all.
For before the gift came, he ought to have proved his case;
因為在那恩賜臨到以前,他本該把自己的案子辯明;
7:148
but once it had come, he would no longer have any occasion to boast.
7:149
Which is exactly what happened also in the case of the Jews.
For since they had of themselves been already given up, for this reason He came, doing away with the boasting by the very fact of His coming.
For he who says he is a teacher of babes, and boasts in the law, and names himself an instructor of the foolish, being, like those others, in need of the One who teaches and saves, could have no pretext for boasting.
For if even before this circumcision became uncircumcision, much more now; for it is cast out of both seasons alike.
And having said, 'It was excluded,' he shows also in what manner.
'How then was it excluded?' he says. 'By what law? Of works? Nay, but by the law of faith.'
Behold, he has called faith also a law, dwelling fondly on the terms, so as to soothe away what seemed to be an innovation.
But what is the law of faith? To be saved by grace.
Here he shows the power of God, that He not only saved, but also justified, and led to boasting, and that too without needing works, but seeking faith only.
And he says these things both to bring the Jew who has believed to moderation, and to check the one who has not believed, so as to draw him on.
For the one who has been saved, if he thinks great things of himself in his attention to the law, will hear that he himself stopped his own mouth, he himself accused himself, he himself renounced his own salvation, and shut out his boasting;
因為那已得救的人,若因專注於律法而自高自大,就必聽見:是他自己堵住了自己的口,是他自己控告了自己,是他自己斷絕了自己的救恩,隔絕了自己的可誇;
7:160
while the one who has not believed, being on the other hand humbled by these same things, will be able to be led to the faith.
Do you see how great the abundance of faith is? How it has removed us from the former things, not even allowing us to boast in them? 'Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law.'
When he had shown that they were, from faith, higher than the Jews, then at last with much boldness he discourses also concerning faith itself, and again heals what here seems to cause disturbance.
For there were these two things that troubled the Jews: one, whether it were possible for those who were not saved with works to be saved without works;
因為有這兩件事困擾著猶太人:其一,那些有行為尚且不得救的人,是否可能沒有行為反倒得救;
7:164
and the other, whether it were just that the uncircumcised should enjoy the same things as those who had for so long a time been reared in the law;
其二,未受割禮的人享受與那些長久在律法中受教養的人同樣的福分,是否公平;
7:165
which troubled them far more than the former.
For this reason, having established the former point, he passes on to this one;
因此,他既確立了前一點,便進而論到這一點;
7:167
which so troubled the Jews that they even blamed Peter after his faith on account of this same matter, because of Cornelius and the things that concerned him.
What then does he say? 'Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law.'
He did not say 'a Jew,' or 'him who is under the law,' but, leading the discourse out into open space and opening the doors of salvation to the whole world, he says 'a man,' setting down the common name of our nature.
Then, taking his occasion from this, he resolves an objection that had not been raised.
For since it was likely that the Jews, on hearing that faith justifies every man, would be vexed and stumble, he added:
'Is He the God of the Jews only?' as if he were saying:
'For why does this seem to you absurd, that every man should be saved? Is God then partial? Hereby showing that when they wish to insult the Gentiles, they rather do outrage to the glory of God, if indeed they will not grant Him to be the God of all.'
But if He is the God of all, He also provides for all;
但祂若是萬人的神,就也眷顧萬人;
7:175
and if He provides for all, He saves all alike through faith.
'Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also.'
For He is not partial, like the fables of the Greeks, but common to all and one;
因為祂不是偏於一方的,不像希臘人的神話中那樣,乃是眾人所共有的、獨一的神;
7:178
that is to say, the same Master both of these and of those.
But if you tell me of the ancient things, even then the workings of His providence were common to all, though in differing measure;
但你若向我提說古時的事,那時祂護理眷佑之工也是眾人所共有的,儘管方式有所不同;
7:180
For to you a written law was given, and to them a natural law; and they were in no way inferior, if only they had willed it, but were even able to overcome.
Wherefore also he added this very thing, hinting at it obscurely:
'Who shall justify the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through faith';
「祂要因信稱那受割禮的為義,也要藉著信稱那未受割禮的為義」;
7:183
reminding them of what had been said earlier concerning uncircumcision and circumcision, by which he had shown that there was no difference at all.
But if even then there was no difference, much more is there none now;
既然連那時都沒有分別,如今就更加沒有分別了;
7:185
and now, establishing this yet more clearly, he showed that each alike stands in need of faith.
'Do we then,' he says, 'make void the law through faith? God forbid!'
Do you see his varied and unspeakable wisdom? For by the very saying 'We establish it,' he showed that it was not standing, but had been dissolved.
And mark the surpassing power of Paul, and with how great abundance he establishes what he wishes.
For here he shows that faith, so far from doing harm to the law, actually assists it, even as the law in turn prepared the way for faith.
For as the law, going before, bore witness to faith—
'for it is witnessed,' he says, 'by the law and the prophets'—
so also faith, in its turn, set the law upon its feet when it had grown weak.
'And how did it set it up?' he asks. What was the work of the law, and for what purpose did it do all things? That it might make man righteous.
But that the law was not strong enough to accomplish;
然而律法卻無力成就這事;
7:195
'for all,' he says, 'have sinned';
他說:「因為世人都犯了罪」;
7:196
but faith, when it came, achieved it;
唯有信一來到,就將這事成全了;
7:197
for at once a man believed and was justified.
Therefore faith established the will of the law, and that for which the law did all things, this faith brought to its consummation.
It did not then make it void, but perfected it.
Three things, then, he here demonstrated: both that it is possible to be justified apart from the law, and that the law was not strong enough for this, and that faith is not at variance with it.
For since this above all troubled the Jews—the seeming that faith stood opposed to it—he shows more than the Jew desires: not only that it is not contrary, but that it is even a most powerful ally and fellow-worker;
因為最使猶太人不安的,正是信似乎與律法相敵這件事,他便顯明了比猶太人所盼望的更多:信不但不與律法為敵,反倒是極其有力的同盟與同工;
7:202
which was the very thing they most longed to hear.
But since, after this grace by which we were justified, there is also need of a right way of life, let us display a zeal worthy of the gift;
但既然在我們因之被稱義的這恩典之後,仍需有相稱的品行,就讓我們顯出配得這恩賜的殷勤;
7:204
and we shall display it, if we guard love, the mother of all good things, with much diligence.
But love is not bare words nor mere greetings, but protection and a showing-forth in deeds;
愛卻不是空洞的言語,也不是徒然的問安,乃是扶持與藉行為所顯明的實據;
7:206
such as to relieve poverty, to succour the sick, to deliver from dangers, to stand by those in straits, to weep with them that weep, to rejoice with them that rejoice;
諸如:救濟貧窮、扶助患病的、搭救人脫離危難、在困境中與人同站、與哀哭的人同哭、與喜樂的人同樂;
7:207
for this too belongs to love.
And yet this seems a small thing—to rejoice with them that rejoice;
與喜樂的人同樂,這事看似微小;
7:209
yet it is exceedingly great, and requires a truly philosophic mind;
其實卻極其重大,且需要一顆有真智慧的心;
7:210
and we should find many who accomplish the harder task, yet grow faint before this one;
我們可以發現,許多人能成就那更艱難的,在這件事上卻軟弱無力;
7:211
they weep with them that weep, but no longer rejoice with them that rejoice; rather they shed tears when others are rejoicing;
他們與哀哭的人同哭,卻不再與喜樂的人同樂,反倒在別人歡樂之時流下眼淚;
7:212
which is envy and jealousy.
It is then no small achievement to rejoice when one's brother rejoices—nay, it is even greater than the other;
所以,在弟兄喜樂時能同他喜樂,這並非小小的成就,反倒比那另一件更為重大;
7:214
and perhaps it is greater not only than weeping with them that weep, but even than standing by others in dangers.
Many, at any rate, have shared in others' dangers, yet have been stung when those same men came to honour;
無論如何,有許多人曾與人共冒危難,卻在那些人得享榮譽時被刺痛了;
7:216
so great is the tyranny of envy.
And yet the one is a matter of toils and sweat, but the other of choice and disposition alone;
然而前者乃是勞苦與汗水之事,後者卻單是心志與意向之事;
7:218
yet nevertheless, having endured the harder thing, many have not accomplished the easier, but pine away and perish whenever they see others in good repute, or a whole Church profited, whether by word or by some other means;
可是縱然如此,許多人既已忍受了那更艱難的,卻不能成就這較容易的,反倒在看見別人享有美名,或看見整個教會或藉言語、或藉其他方法得著益處時,便憔悴而滅亡;
7:219
than which what could be worse? For such a man contends no longer merely with his brother, but with the very will of God.
Considering this, then, cease from the disease; and if you will not for your neighbour's sake, at least deliver yourself from ten thousand ills.
Why do you bring war into your thoughts? Why fill your soul with turmoil? Why work up a tempest? Why turn all things upside down? How, being so disposed, will you be able to ask forgiveness of sins? For if to those who forgive not the offences committed against themselves, neither does He forgive their sins, what forgiveness will He grant to those who set themselves to wrong men that have done them no injury? For this is a proof of the utmost wickedness.
Such men, together with the devil, wage war against the Church;
這樣的人是與魔鬼一同攻擊教會的;
7:223
nay, perhaps far worse;
不,或許還遠比魔鬼更壞;
7:224
for against him it is possible to be on guard, but these men, putting on the mask of friendship, secretly kindle the pyre, casting themselves first into the furnace, and sick with a sickness that not only cannot find pity, but even carries much derision with it.
For why do you turn pale, tell me, and tremble, and stand full of fear? What dreadful thing has happened? That your brother is illustrious and renowned and of good repute? Then you ought to be crowned, and to rejoice, and to glorify God, because your own member is illustrious and renowned;
請告訴我,你為何面色蒼白、戰慄發抖、驚惶站立?發生了甚麼可怕的事?難道是因你的弟兄顯赫、著名、得享美譽麼?其實你倒該得冠冕,該歡喜,該榮耀神,因為你自己身上的肢體既顯赫又著名;
7:226
but you grieve because God is glorified.
Do you see whither the war tends? But 'it is not because God is glorified,' one says, 'but because my brother is.'
But through him the glory ascends to God;
然而榮耀正是藉著他上達於神的;
7:229
therefore your war too is against God.
'But it is not this that grieves me,' he says; 'rather I wished that God should be glorified through me.'
Then rejoice when your brother is in good repute, and again God is glorified through you also, and all will say:
'Blessed be God, who has such servants, freed from all envy, rejoicing together in one another's good things.'
And why do I speak of a brother? For even were he a foe and an enemy, yet if God were glorified through him, on this account one ought to make him a friend;
我又何必單提弟兄呢?縱然那人是仇敵、是對頭,只要神藉著他得了榮耀,人為此就當與他結為朋友;
7:234
but you make your friend an enemy, because God is glorified through his good repute.
And if a man should tend your body when it is in a bad way, even were he an enemy, you would thenceforth count him among your foremost friends;
倘若有人在你身體染病之時來醫治你,縱然他是仇敵,你從此也必把他算作至交好友;
7:236
but him that adorns the body of Christ, that is, the Church, and is your friend, do you count an enemy? And how else could you display your war against Christ? For this cause, even should a man work signs, even should he show forth virginity, fasting, sleeping on the ground, and by this virtue outstrip the very angels, he will be more accursed than all, having this defect, and more lawless than adulterer and fornicator and robber and tomb-plunderer.
And that no one may condemn my words as an exaggeration, I would gladly ask you this:
If a man, taking fire and mattock, were to pull down and set ablaze this house and dig up this altar, would not each of those present pelt him with stones as accursed and lawless? What then, if a man should bring a flame more consuming than this fire—I mean envy—which does not pull down buildings of stone, nor dig up a golden altar, but overthrows and ruins that which is far more precious than walls and altar, namely the edifice of the teachers—of what pardon would he be worthy? For let no one say to me that though he often attempted it, he had not the strength;
倘若有人拿著火與鋤,來拆毀並焚燒這殿宇、挖掉這祭壇,在場的眾人豈不各要用石頭打他,視他為可咒詛、不法之徒麼?那麼,若有人帶來一種比這火更能吞滅的火焰——我是指嫉妒——它所拆毀的並非石造的建築,所挖的也非金的祭壇,乃是傾覆並毀壞那遠比牆垣、祭壇更為寶貴的,就是眾教師所建立之工——這樣的人又配得何等的赦免呢?誰也不要對我說:他雖屢次動手,卻沒有得逞;
7:239
for actions are judged from the intention;
因為事情乃是按人的存心來論斷的;
7:240
since Saul also slew David, even though he did not succeed.
Do you not consider, tell me, that against the sheep
of Christ you plot, warring against the Shepherd, and against the sheep for whom Christ even shed His blood, and bade us both do and suffer all things? Do you not remind yourself that your Master sought your glory, and not His own, while you seek not your Master's glory, but your own? And yet if you sought His, then you would attain your own also;
你所謀害的乃是基督的羊群,你既與那牧人為戰,又攻擊那羊群,就是基督甚至為之流血、又吩咐我們為之凡事去行去受的羊群。你豈不提醒自己:你的主尋求的是你的榮耀,而非祂自己的榮耀,你卻不尋求主的榮耀,只尋求自己的榮耀麼?其實你若尋求祂的榮耀,那時連你自己的榮耀也必得著;
7:243
but seeking your own before His, you will never enjoy even this.
What then shall be the cure of this? Let us all in common pray, and offer up one voice on their behalf, as for those that are possessed.
For these are in a more wretched case than those, inasmuch as their madness springs from deliberate choice.
For this sickness needs prayer and much supplication.
For if he that loves not his brother, even should he empty out his money, even should he shine forth in martyrdom, gains nothing thereby;
因為那不愛弟兄的人,縱然散盡貲財,縱然在殉道中光耀奪目,也毫無所得;
7:248
consider how great a punishment he would deserve who even wars against one that has done him no wrong.
For if to love them that love us leaves us in no way better off than those men, where shall he stand, tell me, who envies them that love him? For to envy is worse even than to make war.
For he who makes war, once the cause for which the war arose has been removed, also lays aside his enmity;
因為發動戰爭的人,一旦引發戰爭的緣由被消除,也就止息了敵意;
7:251
but the envious man could never become a friend.
And the one displays his fight openly, but the other keeps his hidden in shadow;
前者將他的爭鬥公然顯露,後者卻將它隱藏在暗影之中;
7:253
and the one can often allege a reasonable cause for the war, but the other has nothing else than madness and a satanic disposition.
To what, then, might one liken such a soul? To what viper? To what asp? To what worm? To what beetle? For there is nothing more accursed, nothing more wicked, than such a soul.
For this, this it was that overthrew the Churches, this that gave birth to the heresies, this that armed a brother's hand and caused his right hand to be steeped in the blood of a righteous man, this that tore up the laws of nature and opened the doors to death and brought that curse into effect; and it allowed that wretched man to remember neither the birth-pangs, nor his parents, nor anything else, but so drove him into a frenzy and led him into such raving madness that, even when God entreated him and said, 'Unto thee shall be his turning, and thou shalt rule over him,' not even then would he yield.
And yet God even released him from the charge, and subjected his brother to him;
然而神甚至免去了對他的控告,並使他的兄弟服從於他;
7:257
but nevertheless so incurable is this disease that, even when countless remedies are applied to it, it wells up with its own festering corruption.
For what reason do you grieve, O most wretched of all men? Because God was honoured? But this is a satanic disposition.
But is it because your brother was preferred? Yet it is open to you also to surpass him in turn.
So that if you wish to conquer, do not slay nor destroy him, but let him remain, that the ground of the contest may be preserved, and conquer him while he is alive;
所以你若想得勝,就不要殺害也不要除滅他,倒要讓他存活,使這較量的憑藉得以保存,並要在他活著的時候勝過他;
7:261
for thus your crown would have been glorious;
因為這樣,你的冠冕本可以是何等榮耀;
7:262
but as it is, by destroying him you pronounce against yourself a greater verdict of defeat.
But envy knows none of these things.
And for what reason do you crave glory in so great a solitude? For these two alone then inhabited the earth.
But not even this restrained him; rather, casting all things from his soul, he took his stand with the devil and drew up in battle array;
然而連這也未能約束他,反倒他將一切從靈魂中拋開,與魔鬼一同站立,擺開陣勢;
7:266
for indeed it was he, the devil, who was then acting as general along with Cain.
For since it did not suffice him that man had become mortal, he endeavoured to make the tragedy greater by the manner of the death also, and persuaded Cain to become a fratricide;
因為既然人已成為必死的還不能使他滿足,他便竭力藉著死的方式使這悲劇更為慘烈,慫恿該隱成為殺害兄弟的人;
7:268
for he was in haste and in travail to see the sentence carried out into deed—he who is never sated with our woes.
Just as if a man having an enemy in prison, seeing him having received sentence, should be in haste, before he leaves the city, to see him slain even within, and would not even await the fitting time;
正如一個人若有仇敵下在監裡,看見他已被定了罪,便急不可耐,要在他還未出城之前,就是在城內也要看他被殺,甚至不肯等候那合宜的時候;
7:270
even so also did the devil then.
And though he had heard that man should return to the earth, he was in travail to see something more—a son dying before his father, and a brother slaying a brother, and an untimely and violent murder.
Do you see to how many ends envy has ministered? How it filled up the insatiable purpose of the devil, and spread before him so great a table as that which he desired to behold? Let us therefore flee this disease.
For it is not, it is not possible to escape that fire prepared for the devil, unless we are delivered from this disease;
因為若不脫離這病症,我們斷斷不能逃避那為魔鬼所預備的火;
7:274
and we shall be delivered, if we consider how Christ both loved us and commanded us to love one another.
How, then, did He love us? He gave His precious blood for us when we were enemies and had done Him the greatest wrongs.
Do you also do this toward your brother;
你也當向你的兄弟這樣行;
7:277
for on this account, He says, 'A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another even as I have loved you.'
But rather, not even here does the measure stand still;
然而,這尺度甚至到此仍不止息;
7:279
for He did this on behalf of His enemies.
But you are not willing to give your own blood for your brother? Why then do you even shed his, disobeying the commandment in diametrical opposition? And yet what He did was not out of any debt;
可是你連為兄弟捨自己的血都不肯嗎?那你為何反倒流他的血,全然與那命令背道而馳地違抗呢?況且祂所行的,並非出於任何虧欠;
7:281
but you, if you do it, are henceforth fulfilling a debt;
然而你若這樣行,就是在償還一項虧欠了;
7:282
since that man too, who received the ten thousand talents and yet exacted the hundred denarii, was punished not on this account alone, that he demanded it, but because he did not become better even by the kindness shown him, nor, when his master had led the way, did he follow after and remit the debt;
因為那領了一萬他連得、卻仍向人索討一百銀錢的人,受罰不僅是因為他索討,更是因為他即使蒙了恩惠也未變得更好,主人既已作了榜樣,他卻沒有跟隨去免了那債;
7:283
for indeed what would have been done by the servant, had it been done, would henceforth have been a debt.
For indeed all things whatsoever we do, we do them in fulfilment of a debt.
'When ye shall have done all things,' He says, 'say that We are unprofitable servants;
祂說:「你們作完了一切,只當說:我們是無用的僕人;
7:286
for what we were bound to do, we have done.'
If, then, we show forth love, and if we give money to those in need, we are fulfilling a debt;
所以我們若顯出愛心,若把錢財給那些窮乏的人,也不過是在償還虧欠;
7:288
not only because He Himself began the good deeds, but also because it is His own that we distribute, whenever we do give.
Why then do you deprive yourself of those things of which He Himself wishes you to be lord? For on this account He bade you give them to another, that you yourself might have them.
For as long as you hold them alone, not even you yourself possess them;
因為只要你獨自把持著,連你自己也不算擁有;
7:291
but when you give to another, then you yourself also have received.
Could there be anything equal to this affection? He Himself poured out His blood for His enemies, but we will not even give money for our Benefactor;
還有什麼能與這慈愛相比呢?祂親自為仇敵傾流了自己的血,我們卻連為那施恩者捨錢財都不肯;
7:293
He His own blood, but we not even money that is not our own;
祂捨了自己的血,我們卻連那本不屬我們的錢財都不肯捨;
7:294
He before us, but we not even after Him;
祂在我們之先,我們卻連在祂之後也不肯;
7:295
He for our salvation, but we not even for our own advantage;
祂是為我們的救恩,我們卻連為自己的益處也不肯;
7:296
for nothing more accrues to Him from our love of mankind, but the whole gain comes round to us.
For on this account also we are bidden to give them, that we ourselves may not fall away from them.
For just as, if one were to give money to a little child, he bids him hold it fast, or even to give it to a servant to keep, so that it may not be possible for anyone who wishes to snatch it away;
因為正如一個人若把錢給小孩子,就吩咐他要緊緊拿住,或甚至交給僕人保管,好使凡想搶奪的人都不能奪去;
7:299
'For give to him that is in need,' He says, 'that no one may snatch them from you'—such as a false accuser, or the devil, or a thief, or, after all these, death.
For as long as you yourself hold them, you hold them not securely;
因為只要你自己把持著它們,你就持守得不穩妥;
7:301
but if you give them to Me through the poor, I keep them all for you with exactness, and at the fitting time I will restore them to you with great abundance.
For I do not receive them that I may take them away, but that I may make them more, that I may guard them more exactly, that I may keep them for you against that time in which there is no one who lends nor who shows mercy.
What, then, could be more brutal than we, if after such promises we will not endure to lend to Him? For this very reason we depart to Him desolate and naked and poor, not having the things entrusted to us, because we did not deposit them with Him who guards them more exactly than all.
Wherefore also we shall pay the uttermost penalty.
For what, when accused, shall we be able to say in defence of our own destruction? What pretext shall we put forward? What defence? For why did you not give? Do you disbelieve that you shall receive again? And how could this stand to reason? For He who gave to one that had not given, how shall He not much more give after receiving? But does the sight of them delight you? Then all the more, for this very reason, give, that you may be delighted the more greatly there, where no one shall take them away;
因為當我們受控告時,還能說出什麼來為自己的沉淪辯護呢?要提出什麼藉口?什麼申辯?你為何不施捨呢?你是不信會再度領受嗎?可這怎能講得通呢?因為那位向未曾給過祂的人施予的主,領受之後豈不更要加倍地施予嗎?難道是它們的模樣叫你歡喜嗎?那你更該為此施捨出去,好叫你在那裡——就是無人能奪去的地方——得著更大的喜樂;
7:306
since now at least, by holding them fast, you will suffer countless terrible things.
For like a dog, so does the devil spring upon the rich, as though wishing to snatch away a morsel or a cake that a child is holding.
Let us therefore give them to the Father.
And if the devil sees this done, he will assuredly withdraw;
魔鬼若看見這事成就了,就必定退去;
7:310
and when he has withdrawn, then the Father will give them all to you in security, when that one can no longer trouble you, throughout the age to come.
For as it is now, from little children troubled by curs—
the rich differ in nothing from little children troubled by curs, with all things barking around them, tearing at them, dragging them—and not men only, but also illiberal passions: gluttony, drunkenness, flattery, and every kind of licentiousness.
And when we have to lend, we busy ourselves about those who give much, and look narrowly for the honest debtors;
當我們要放貸的時候,就對那些付得多的人費心打聽,仔細尋找那些守信的借款人;
7:314
but here we do the contrary;
然而在這事上我們卻反其道而行;
7:315
for God, who is a good debtor and provides not the hundredth part but a hundredfold, we let go, but those who will not repay us even the principal, these we seek out.
For what will the belly repay us, consuming as it does the greater share? Dung and corruption.
And vainglory? Envy and malice.
And niggardliness? Anxiety and care.
And licentiousness? Gehenna and the venomous worm.
For these are the debtors of the rich, and it is by paying to these the interest upon the principal that they incur the evils here and the dreadful things that are looked for hereafter.
To such men, tell me, shall we lend at the cost of so great a punishment, and yet shall we not entrust our goods to Christ, who holds out to us heaven, life immortal, and blessings unspeakable? And what excuse shall we have? For why do you not give to Him who will assuredly repay, and repay yet more? Is it, perhaps, because He gives after a long time? And yet even here He gives.
For He who says it cannot lie: 'Seek the kingdom of heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you.'
Do you see the exceeding greatness of His bounty? 'Those things,' He says, 'are kept in reserve for you and are not diminished; but these present things I give you over and above, as a bonus and a surplus.'
And apart from this, the very receiving after a long interval of time multiplies your wealth for you;
此外,正因是隔了長久的時間才領取,這本身就使你的財富倍增;
7:325
for the interest becomes greater.
For indeed in the case of those who lend money we see the lenders doing this very thing, lending more readily to those who repay after a long time.
For he who pays back the whole at once cuts short the running of the interest;
因為那立刻歸還全部本金的人,便中斷了利息的滋長;
7:328
but he who keeps it for a longer time has also made the profit greater. Then, in the case of men, we are not vexed at the delay, but even contrive to make it longer; yet toward God shall we be so mean-spirited as on this very account to shrink back and draw away? And yet, as I said, He gives even here; and along with the reason mentioned, He is ordering something else and greater, laying up the whole in that other world.
For the greatness of what is given, and the beauty of that gift, transcend the meanness of the present life.
For it is not possible in a body that is corruptible and perishable to receive those unfading crowns, nor in the present manner of life, tumultuous and full of disturbance and subject to many changes, to attain to that unmovable and untroubled portion.
But you, if someone who owed you gold, while you were sojourning in a foreign land and had neither servants nor the means to convey it to your house, promised to hand over the loan, you would entreat him in a thousand ways to pay it not in the foreign country but rather at home;
可是你呢,若有人欠你金子,而你正客居異鄉,既沒有僕人,也無法把金子運回家中,那人卻答應要償還這筆借款,你必千方百計地懇求他,不要在異地、而要在家裡把金子交付你;
7:332
and yet those spiritual and unspeakable things you insist on receiving here? And how great a folly is this! For if you receive them here, you will receive things wholly corruptible;
然而那些屬靈、難以言喻的福分,你卻堅持要在此世領取嗎?這是何等的愚昧!因為你若在今世領取,所得的必定是會朽壞的;
7:333
but if you await that other season, He will repay you with things incorruptible and undefiled;
但你若等候那另一時候,祂必以不朽壞、不玷污之物償還你;
7:334
if you receive here, you have received lead;
你若在此領取,所得的乃是鉛;
7:335
but if there, tested gold.
Yet neither has He deprived you of the things here.
For along with that promise He has set down another also, saying thus: that everyone who loves the things there shall receive a hundredfold in this present age, and shall inherit eternal life.
But if we do not receive a hundredfold, we ourselves are to blame, in not lending to Him who is able to give so much;
但我們若沒有得著百倍,那是我們自己的過錯,因為我們沒有借貸給那能賜下如此之多的主;
7:339
since all who have given received such abundance, and that though they gave but little.
For what great thing did Peter give, tell me? Was it not only a torn net, a reed, and a hook? Yet nevertheless God opened to him the houses of the whole inhabited world, and spread out for him land and sea, and all men called him into their own dwellings;
請告訴我,彼得給了甚麼了不起的東西呢?豈不只是一張破網、一根釣竿和一個魚鉤嗎?然而神卻為他敞開了普天下的家門,為他鋪展了陸地與海洋,眾人都邀請他進入自己的家中;
7:341
or rather, selling their own possessions, they brought them to his feet, not even putting them into his hands (for they did not dare), thus paying him, together with their liberality, so great an honor.
'But that man was Peter,' someone says.
And what of that, O man? For it was not to Peter alone that He promised these things, nor
did He say, 'But you, O Peter, alone shall receive a hundredfold,' but, 'Everyone who has left house or brethren shall receive a hundredfold.'
For He knows no distinction of persons, but the right accomplishment of deeds.
'But a band of children surrounds me,' one says, 'and I desire to leave them rich.'
For what reason, then, do we make them poor? For if you leave them everything, you have again entrusted all your goods to an insecure keeping;
那麼,我們為何反倒使他們貧窮呢?因為你若把一切都留給他們,你不過是再一次把你所有的財物交給不可靠的保管;
7:348
but if you leave God to them as a joint-heir and guardian, you have left them countless treasures. For just as, when we avenge ourselves, God does not defend us, but when we yield the matter to Him, more is done than we expect;
但你若把神留給他們作同得產業者與監護人,你就是留下了無數的珍寶。正如當我們自行報復時,神便不為我們伸冤,但當我們將事情交託給祂時,所成就的卻超過我們所期望的;
7:349
so also in the matter of possessions, if we ourselves are anxious over them, He will withdraw His providence concerning them;
在財物的事上也是如此:我們若自己為財物憂慮,祂就撤去祂對財物的看顧;
7:350
but if we cast the whole upon Him, He will establish both them and our children in all security.
And why do you marvel that this happens in God's case? For one may see this coming to pass even in the case of men.
For if you call upon none of your kinsmen when dying, to care for your children, even one who greatly wishes it is often ashamed and blushes to leap of his own accord upon this charge;
因為你臨終時若不託付任何一位親屬照顧你的兒女,那即使極其願意的人,也往往因羞愧而臉紅,不敢擅自出面承擔這責任;
7:353
but if you cast the care upon him, then, being honored with the greatest honor, he too will render the greatest recompense.
If, therefore, you wish to leave much wealth to your children, leave them the providence of God.
For He who, when you had done nothing, both gave the soul and fashioned the body and bestowed life, when He sees you displaying such generosity, and distributing to Him what is theirs along with them, how shall He not open to them every kind of wealth? For if Elijah, fed with a little meal, when he saw that woman preferring him to her own children, showed threshing-floors and wine-vats upon the widow's little chamber;
因為那位在你尚未做甚麼之時,就已賜下靈魂、塑造身體、恩賜生命的主,當祂看見你顯出這樣的慷慨,把兒女所有的連同他們一起分給祂時,祂豈不向他們敞開各樣的財富嗎?因為以利亞不過靠少許麵粉得養,當他看見那婦人看重他過於自己的兒女時,就在那寡婦的小屋裡顯出了滿倉的麥子與滿槽的酒;
7:356
consider how great a kindness the Master of Elijah will display.
Let us not, therefore, look to this, how we may leave our children rich, but how we may leave them virtuous.
For if they trust in wealth, they will take heed to nothing else, since they are able to screen the wickedness of their ways with the abundance of their money;
因為他們若倚靠錢財,就必不留心別的事,因為他們能用錢財的豐裕來遮掩品行的敗壞;
7:359
but if they see themselves bereft of the consolation from that source, they will do everything so as to find, through virtue, much consolation for their poverty.
Do not, therefore, leave wealth, that you may leave virtue.
For it is the height of unreasonableness, while we live, not to make them masters of all our substance, but when we die, to grant a great license to the heedlessness of youth.
And yet, while we live, we shall be able both to demand an account, and to bring back to sober-mindedness and to bridle those who use their substance ill;
然而我們活著時,既能查問他們的帳目,又能使那些濫用家業的人回轉、歸於自守,並加以約束;
7:363
but when we are dead, if together with our absence and their youth we grant them also the license that comes from wealth, we shall thrust those wretched and miserable creatures into countless precipices, casting fire upon fire, and dripping oil upon a grievous furnace.
So that, if you wish to leave them rich with security, leave God as their debtor, and put into His hands the bond of their inheritance.
For if they themselves receive the money, they will not even know to whom to give it, but will fall in with many false accusers and thankless men;
因為他們自己若得了錢財,甚至不知道該給誰,反倒會遇上許多誣告者與忘恩負義之人;
7:366
but if you, taking the lead, lend it to God, the treasure remains thenceforth inviolable, and the repayment will be made with much ease.
For God feels gratitude even when He pays back what He owes to us, and He looks with more pleasure upon His own creditors than upon those who have not lent to Him, and those to whom He owes most, these He loves most.
So that, if you wish to have Him as a friend continually, make Him debtor to you for much.
For no lender so rejoices in having debtors as Christ is gladdened in having creditors;
因為沒有一個放債的人以有債務人為樂,能及得上基督以有債主為喜;
7:370
and those to whom He owes nothing, these He even shuns; but those to whom He owes, to these He even runs.
Let us therefore do everything, so as to have Him as our debtor;
所以讓我們竭盡所能,好叫祂作我們的債主;
7:372
for this is the season for lending, and now He is set in need.
If, therefore, you give Him nothing now, He will not need you after your departure from this world.
For here He thirsts, here He hungers;
因為祂在此世乾渴,在此世飢餓;
7:375
and He thirsts, because He thirsts for your salvation;
祂之所以乾渴,是因為祂渴慕你的救恩;
7:376
for on this account He even begs, on this account He even goes about naked.
procuring for you life immortal.
Do not, therefore, overlook Him;
所以不要輕看祂;
7:379
for He does not wish to be fed, but to feed; not to be clothed, but to clothe, and to fashion for you that golden garment, the royal robe.
Do you not see also, among physicians, those who are more careful, that when they bathe the sick, they too bathe, though they have no need? So He also does everything for your sake, the sick one.
For this reason He does not even demand it of you by force, that He may give you a great recompense;
正因如此,祂甚至不勉強向你索討,為要賜給你豐厚的報答;
7:382
that you may learn that He demands not because He has need, but that He is setting right your own need.
For this reason He also comes to you in a lowly guise, and stretching out His right hand;
正因如此,祂以卑微的形貌來到你面前,伸出祂的右手;
7:384
and if you give but an obol, He does not turn away; and if you dishonor Him, He does not withdraw, but comes to you again;
你即使只給一個小錢,祂也不轉身離去;你即使羞辱祂,祂也不退避,反倒再次來到你這裡;
7:385
for He loves greatly, He loves our salvation.
Let us therefore despise money, that we may not be despised by Christ;
所以讓我們輕看錢財,免得被基督輕看;
7:387
let us despise money, that we may attain to the very money itself.
For if we keep it here, we shall utterly lose it both here and there;
因為我們若把錢財留在此世,就必在今世與來世都全然失去它;
7:389
but if we distribute it with much liberality, in each of the two lives we shall enjoy much abundance.
Whoever, then, wishes to become rich, let him become poor, that he may become rich.
But if these things seem novel and paradoxical, consider the sower, and reckon that not even he can gather in a greater harvest by any other means, unless he scatter what he has and let go what lies ready to hand.
Let us therefore also sow, and let us cultivate heaven, that we may reap with great abundance and attain the eternal good things, through the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
