What then? That which Israel seeks for, this it did not obtain, but the election obtained it.
He had said that God has not cast off His people; and, showing how He has not cast them off, he again took refuge in the prophets.
And having shown through them that the greater part of the Jews had perished, lest again he should seem to bring the accusation of himself and to make his words offensive and, as though their enemy, to assail them, he takes refuge in David and in Isaiah, saying:
God gave them a spirit of stupor.
But rather we must begin the discourse from higher up.
For having spoken of the things concerning Elijah, and having shown what grace is, he added:
What then? That which Israel seeks for, this it did not obtain.
But this is the language not so much of one inquiring as of one bringing a charge.
For the Jew, he says, is at war with himself, seeking righteousness which he is not willing to receive.
Then, again depriving them of excuse, from those who had received it he demonstrates their perverseness, speaking thus:
And those men shall condemn these.
Just as Christ also said:
If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.
For that no one might blame the nature of the matter, but rather their own disposition, he points also to those who did obtain it.
Wherefore also he has employed the expression with great emphasis, indicating both the grace from above and their own diligence.
For not in order to do away with free will, he says, does he say that they obtained it, but in order to declare the greatness of the good things, and that the greater part was of grace, not the whole.
For it is our custom too to say, 'So-and-so obtained it, so-and-so found it,' whenever the gain that comes to pass is great.
For it was not by human labors, but by divine bounty that the greater part came to pass.
See when he took courage to declare in his own voice the casting out of the rest.
For he had indeed said it even before, but by bringing in the prophets as accusers;
其實他先前也已說過,卻是藉著引進眾先知作控告者;
19:21
but here he too at length pronounces the verdict himself.
Yet nevertheless not even here is he content with his own pronouncement, but again he brings in Isaiah the prophet;
然而即便在此,他仍不以自己的宣判為足,乃再度引進先知以賽亞;
19:23
for having said, 'They were hardened,' he added:
God gave them a spirit of stupor.
And whence came this hardening? He had indeed spoken of the causes before also, and turned the whole thing back upon their own head, showing that they underwent this from unseasonable contentiousness.
For when he says, 'Eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear,' he does nothing else than accuse their contentious disposition.
For having eyes so as to behold the miracles, and possessing ears so as to hear that wondrous teaching, they used none of these for what they ought.
But as to the word 'gave,' here do not think it means active working, but permission.
And by 'stupor' here he means the soul's condition toward what is worse, that which is incurable and unchangeable;
而此處所謂「昏迷」,他是指靈魂偏向那更壞之境的狀態,就是那無可救治、不能改變的狀態;
19:30
since elsewhere too David says:
That my glory may sing praise to You, and I be not pierced with compunction;
「好叫我的靈歌頌你,並不緘默」;
19:32
that is, I may not be changed.
For just as he who is pierced with compunction in reverence would not easily be moved away,
so also he who is fixed fast in wickedness would not again easily be changed;
照樣,那在邪惡中被扎入固定的人,也不會輕易再改變;
19:35
for to be pierced with compunction is nothing else than to be embedded somewhere and nailed fast.
Therefore, to indicate the incurable and hard-to-alter character of their disposition, he said, 'a spirit of stupor.'
Then, showing that for this unbelief they shall pay the utmost penalty, again he brings in the prophet threatening the very things which came to pass and reached their fulfillment.
For let their table, he says, become a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block;
他說:「願他們的筵席變為網羅、變為機檻、變為絆腳石」;
19:39
that is, Let their luxury, all their good things, be changed and perish, and let them become an easy prey to all.
And to show that they suffer these things as paying the penalty for their sins, he added:
19:41
And for a recompense to them.
Let their eyes be darkened that they should not see, and bow down their back continually.
Do these things, then, still need any interpretation? Were they not plain even to the exceedingly foolish? And even before our words, the very issue of events, coming beforehand, bears witness to what has been said.
For when were they ever so easily subdued? when so easily taken? when did He so bow down their back? when did they undergo such slavery? And, what is even greater, that there shall not even be any release from these calamities;
他們幾時曾這樣容易被制伏?幾時這樣容易被擄掠?主幾時這樣叫他們的腰彎曲?他們幾時受過這樣的奴役?更嚴重的是,他們連從這些禍患得釋放的可能都沒有;
19:45
which the prophet also himself darkly intimated.
For he did not simply say, 'Bow down their back,' but also, 'Continually.'
But if you are contentious, O Jew, about the end, from the things that have already passed learn also the things present.
But it came to two hundred years, and God quickly delivered you from that bondage, and that when you were impious and committing fornication of the most grievous kind;
然而那不過是二百年,神就迅速把你從那奴役中拯救出來,並且是在你行不虔敬、犯最可憎之淫亂的時候;
19:49
you were delivered from Egypt, and you worshiped the calf; you sacrificed your sons to Baal-peor; you defiled the temple; you went into every form of evil; you were ignorant of nature itself; you filled the mountains, the glens, the hills, the springs, the rivers, the gardens with your abominable sacrifices; you slaughtered prophets; you overthrew altars; you displayed every excess of wickedness and impiety;
你既得脫離埃及,卻拜那牛犢;你把兒女獻祭給巴力毘珥;你玷污了聖殿;你行盡各樣的惡;你連本性都棄而不顧;你把山嶺、幽谷、丘陵、泉源、河流、園子都充滿了那可憎的祭物;你殺害先知;你拆毀祭壇;你顯出邪惡與不虔的一切極端;
19:50
but nevertheless, having delivered you over to the Babylonians for seventy years, He again brought you back to your former liberty, and gave back the temple and the fatherland, and the ancient form of prophecy, and prophets again and the grace of the Spirit;
然而,祂雖把你交給巴比倫人七十年,卻又領你回到先前的自由,把聖殿、祖國、以及那古時預言的樣式都歸還於你,先知又再興起,聖靈的恩典也復臨;
19:51
or rather, not even in the time of the captivity were you forsaken, but there too were Daniel and Ezekiel, and in Egypt Jeremiah, and in the wilderness Moses.
After those things you returned again to your former wickedness, and were driven into frenzy, and went over to the Greek polity under Antiochus the impious;
在那些事以後,你又回到先前的邪惡,如癲狂放蕩一般,並在那不虔的安提阿古手下轉投希臘的制度;
19:53
yet even then, being delivered over to Antiochus for three years only and a little more, through the Maccabees you again set up your glorious trophies.
But now nothing of the sort has happened; on the contrary, quite the reverse has come to pass;
但如今卻毫無這樣的事,反倒全然相反的事發生了;
19:55
and this is what one may most marvel at, that the things of their wickedness have ceased, while the things of their punishment have been intensified, and it holds not even any hope of change.
For not seventy years only have passed, nor a hundred, nor twice as many, but even three hundred and much more, and one cannot find so much as a shadow of any such hope, and that too though you are neither practicing idolatry nor doing the other things which formerly you dared to do.
What then is the cause? The truth succeeded the type, and grace shut out the law;
那麼緣由究竟是甚麼呢?真理承接了預表,恩典把律法關在門外;
19:58
which things, then, the prophet, foretelling from of old, said:
And bow down their back continually.
Did you see the exactness of the prophecy, how he both foretold the unbelief, and showed the contentiousness, and made plain the punishment that would follow, and displayed the endlessness of the chastisement? For since many of the grosser sort, disbelieving the things to come, wished to see the future from the present, from hence already Christ furnished the demonstration of His power in both directions, exalting above the heaven those of the Gentiles who believed, but bringing down to the utmost desolation those of the Jews who disbelieved, and delivering them over to irremediable evils.
Having therefore assailed them vehemently, both from the things wherein they disbelieved, and from the things which they had suffered and were about to suffer, again he consoles what has been said, writing thus:
I say then, Did they stumble that they should fall? God forbid.
When he had shown that they were liable to ten thousand evils, then he devises consolation.
And observe the discernment of Paul;
且看保羅的明智;
19:65
the accusation he introduced from the prophets, but the consolation he sets down from himself.
For that great sins have been committed by them, he says, no one will gainsay;
他說,至於他們犯了大罪這一點,無人能加以否認;
19:67
But let us see whether the fall is of such a kind as to be also incurable and to admit of no correction.
Do you see how he again lays hold of them, and, even while holding out the hope of consolation, makes them liable for sins already confessed? But let us see what consolation he also devises for them.
What, then, is the consolation? 'But when the fullness of the Gentiles has come in,' he says, 'then all Israel'—
'shall be saved,' at the time of the Second Coming and of the consummation.
But he does not say this straightaway;
然而他並不立刻說出這話;
19:72
for since he had vehemently borne down upon them, and heaped accusations upon accusations, bringing in prophets upon prophets to cry out against them—Isaiah, Elijah, David, Moses, Hosea—once, twice, and many times over;
因為他既已猛烈地攻擊他們,將控訴加在控訴之上,引進一位又一位的先知來斥責他們——以賽亞、以利亞、大衛、摩西、何西阿——一次、兩次,乃至多次;
19:73
lest in this way he should cast even these into despair and wall off their return to the faith, and lest, on the other hand, he should lift up into arrogance those of the Gentiles who had believed, so that they too, being puffed up, should be harmed in respect of the doctrine of faith—he again consoles them, saying:
'But by their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles.'
But we ought not simply to hear what is said, but to know the mind and the aim of the one speaking, and what he was eager to accomplish;
但我們不該只是聽所說的話,乃當明白說話者的心意與目的,以及他所切望要成就的是什麼;
19:76
which is what I always exhort your love to do.
For if we receive what is said with this understanding, we shall see that in none of these things is there any difficulty.
For what he is now earnest about is to pull down the arrogance that arises among those of the Gentiles from what has been said;
因為他如今所切望的,乃是要拆毀那從上述話語中在外邦信徒裡滋生的狂妄;
19:79
for thus these too were destined to abide more securely in the faith, having learned to be moderate, while those of the Jews, being freed from despair, would come to grace with greater eagerness.
Looking, therefore, to this aim, let us hearken to all that is said in this passage.
What, then, does he say? And whence does he show that they did not fall incurably, nor were cast off utterly? From the Gentiles, speaking thus:
'By their trespass salvation has come among the Gentiles, so as to provoke them to jealousy.'
And this is not his word alone, but the parables in the Gospels also intend this same thing.
For he who made the marriage feast for his son, when those who were bidden would not come, then called those in the streets.
And he who planted the vineyard, when the husbandmen slew the heir, then let out the vineyard to others.
And even apart from a parable he himself said:
'I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.'
And to the Syrophoenician woman, when she persisted, he again said something further:
'For it is not good,' he says, 'to take the children's bread and give it to the little dogs.'
And Paul, too, said to those of the Jews who were seditious: 'It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you;
保羅也對那些作亂的猶太人說:「神的道先講給你們原是應當的;
19:91
but since you judge yourselves unworthy, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.'
And through all of this it is made plain that the sequence of events was this: that those should come first, and then those of the Gentiles;
藉著這一切都顯明,事情本有的次序乃是:那些人先來,然後才是外邦人;
19:93
but since they disbelieved, the order was reversed, and their unbelief and their trespass caused these to be brought in first.
Therefore he says: 'By their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to provoke them to jealousy.'
But if he speaks of that which came about by consequence as though it had happened by primary intention, do not be amazed;
但他若把那本是因後果而發生的事說成彷彿是出於首要的旨意,你不必詫異;
19:96
for he wishes to console their stricken souls.
And what he says is of this kind:
they did not receive him though he worked countless miracles, but crucified him;
他行了無數神蹟,他們卻不接待他,反倒把他釘了十字架;
19:99
he thereupon drew in the Gentiles, so that the honor bestowed on these, stinging their insensibility, might—even out of rivalry toward others—persuade them to come.
For it was fitting that those should be received first, and then we;
因為理當是那些人先被接納,然後才是我們;
19:101
'for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek';
「因這福音本是神的大能,要救一切相信的,先是猶太人,後是希臘人」;
19:102
but since they leaped away, we who were second have become first.
You see, then, how much honor he also gathers for them from this;
由此你看見,他又從這裡為他們積聚了何等大的尊榮;
19:104
one honor, in that he says we were called only then, when they themselves were unwilling;
其一,在於他說我們是到那時才蒙召的,就是當他們自己不肯的時候;
19:105
and a second, in that he says we were called for this end—not that we alone should be saved, but that they too, provoked to jealousy through our salvation, might become better.
What then? he says: had it not been for the Jews, would we not have been called and saved? We would not have been called before them, but in the fitting order.
Therefore also, when he said to the disciples, he did not say simply, 'Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel,' but 'Go rather,' showing that after this it was needful to depart to those others also.
And Paul again did not say, 'It is necessary that the word be spoken to you,' but 'It was necessary that it be first spoken to you,' showing that it should be so a second time also.
And these things both came to pass and were spoken, so that those men might not have even a shameless pretext, as though they had been overlooked and had for that reason not believed.
For this very reason Christ also, though foreknowing all things, nevertheless came to them first.
'But if their trespass is the riches of the world, and their diminishing the riches of the Gentiles, how much more their fullness?' Here he addresses them so as to gratify them.
For even if these had fallen ten thousand times, the Gentiles would not have been saved unless they had shown forth faith;
因為這些人縱使跌倒千萬次,外邦人若不顯出信心,也仍不得救;
19:113
just as, on the other hand, the Jews would not have perished, had they not disbelieved and given themselves to contention.
But, as I said, he consoles them in their fallen state, out of abundance preparing them to take courage concerning their own salvation, if they should change. For if, he says, when they stumbled, so many enjoyed salvation, and in their being cast out, so many were called, consider what it will be when they turn back.
For he did not say, 'how much more their turning back,' nor 'their change,' nor 'their setting-right,' but 'how much more their fullness'—that is, when all are about to enter in.
And this he said to show that even then there will be the greater abundance of grace, and of the gift of God, and, one might almost say, the whole of it.
'For I speak to you Gentiles: inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if by any means I may provoke to jealousy my own flesh, and may save some of them.'
Once more he was earnest to clear himself of an evil suspicion;
他再一次切望要洗清自己,免受惡意的猜疑;
19:119
and he seems to be rebuking those of the Gentiles and humbling their thoughts, while gently pricking the Jew;
他看似在責備那些外邦人、貶抑他們的自高之念,卻又暗暗地刺激著猶太人;
19:120
and he goes about seeking to cover over and console their so great a ruin, yet finds nothing, because of the nature of the matters themselves.
For, from the very things he has said, they were deserving of greater accusation, seeing that others, far inferior to them, have received the things prepared for them.
For this reason, then, he passes over from the Jews to those of the Gentiles, and inserts in the middle the discourse concerning these, wishing to show that he says all these things in order to teach them to be moderate.
'For I commend you,' he says, 'on account of these two things:
on the one hand, because I have a necessity laid upon me, having been entrusted with your ministry;
其一,因我既受託承擔了你們的職事,就有不得不盡的責任;
19:125
and on the other, that through you I may save others.'
And he does not say, 'my brethren, my kinsmen,' but 'my flesh.'
Then, indicating their contentiousness, he does not say, 'if by any means I may persuade,' but 'I may provoke to jealousy and save,' and not even here 'all of them,' but 'some of them';
接著,他為要指出他們的好爭競,並不說「或者可以勸服」,乃說「激動……發憤而拯救」,並且在此也不說「他們眾人」,乃說「他們一些人」;
19:128
And even in this very rebuke he again shows the things of the Gentiles to be glorious;
甚至就在這責備之中,他又再次顯明外邦人的境況是何等榮耀;
19:129
if indeed they become the cause of salvation to them, and that not through the same means;
既然他們竟成了猶太人得救的緣由,而且並非藉著相同的途徑;
19:130
for those became authors of good things to these out of unbelief, while these become authors of good things to those out of faith.
Whence the things of the Gentiles seem both to be equal and to have the advantage.
For what could you say, O Jew? 'Had we not been cast out, would you not straightway have been called?' But this also he of the Gentiles says:
19:133
'Had I not been saved, you would not have been provoked to jealousy.'
And if you wish also to learn wherein we have the advantage: I, out of believing, save you;
你若也想知道我們在何處更佔優勢:我是出於相信而拯救你;
19:135
but you, by having stumbled, have given us a passage before yourself.
Then again, perceiving that he had touched them too sharply, he resumes the former point and says:
For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? Yet this too condemns them again, seeing that others gained from their sins, while they themselves were not even profited by the good deeds of others.
But if he says that what came about of necessity belongs to those men, do not marvel;
但他若說那出於必然而發生的事乃屬於那些人,你不必希奇;
19:139
for in order to both restrain these — as I have often said — and to encourage those, he thus shapes his discourse.
For as I said before, even had the Jews been cast off ten thousand times over, yet had the Gentiles not shown forth faith, they would never have been saved.
But he stands by the part that has grown weak, and helps that which has been afflicted.
And observe in what things he shows them favour, merely consoling them by words.
'For if,' he says, 'the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world—'
And what is this to the Jews? 'What shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?' Yet neither is this anything to them, unless they be received.
But what he means is this:
If, while angry with them, He bestowed so much upon others, when He is reconciled to them, what will He not bestow? But just as the resurrection
of the dead is not on account of their reception, so neither is our salvation now on their account;
死人的復活並非因著他們的被收納,照樣,如今我們的救恩也並非因著他們;
19:148
but they were cast out because of their folly, while we were saved by faith and by the grace from above.
And none of these things will be able to profit them, unless they display the faith that is fitting.
Nevertheless, doing what is customary with him, he advances his discourse into another commendation — not truly a commendation, but only seeming to be one — imitating the best of physicians, who console the sick with just as much as the nature of the illness allows.
For what does he say? 'And if the firstfruit is holy, so is the lump;'
'and if the root is holy, so are the branches;'
here calling firstfruit and root those about Abraham and Isaac and Jacob — the prophets, the patriarchs, all who were held in honour under the Old Covenant;
在此他稱亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各一輩人——眾先知、眾族長,以及一切在舊約之下蒙嘉許的人——為新麵和樹根;
19:154
and branches those of them who believed.
Then, since it stood against him that many had disbelieved, see how he again cuts this off, and says:
'But if some of the branches were broken off—'
'And yet above you were saying that the greater number perished, and few were saved;
「然而你在上文說,大多數的人滅亡了,只有少數得救;
19:158
how then here, concerning those who perish, have you put ''some,'' which is indicative of fewness?' 'It is not,' he says, 'that I fall into contradiction with myself, but that I am eager to heal and to recover those who have been afflicted.'
You see how throughout the whole passage he is shown to be establishing this — his wish to console them? And should you take it away, many contradictions will follow.
But do you consider his wisdom for me — how, while seeming to speak on their behalf and to devise consolation for them, he yet strikes them secretly, and shows them to be bereft of all defence, from the root, from the firstfruit.
For consider the wickedness of the branches, when, though not even having a sweet root, they imitate it;
你且思想那些枝子的邪惡:它們連甜美的根都沒有,卻效法它;
19:162
and the evil of the lump, when it is not even changed from the firstfruit.
'But if some of the branches were broken off—'
19:164
'And yet the greater part was broken off;'
but, as I said, he wishes to console them.
For this reason he brings in the statement not from himself, but from those men, and in this way strikes them secretly, and shows them fallen away from kinship with Abraham;
為此,他不是從自己,而是從那些人口中引出這話,藉此暗中觸及他們,並顯明他們已從與亞伯拉罕的親屬關係中墜落;
19:167
for this was what he was eager to say — that they have nothing in common with him.
For if the root is holy, but these are not holy, then these are far from the root.
Then, while seeming to console the Jew, he again strikes those of the Gentiles through this accusation;
接著,他一面看似安慰猶太人,卻又藉這責備再次打擊那出於外邦的人;
19:170
for having said, 'But if some of the branches were broken off,' he added:
19:171
'And you, being a wild olive, were grafted in.'
For the more worthless the man from the Gentiles is, the more does the Jew grieve to see this man revelling in what is his own;
因為那出於外邦的人越是卑微,猶太人看見他享用自己所有的產業時,就越發傷痛;
19:173
and to the Gentile the shame from his lowliness is not so great as the honour from his transformation.
He did not say, 'You were planted in,' but, 'You were grafted in,' in this again biting the Jew, and showing the man from the Gentiles standing firm in the tree that was his own, and this man lying on the ground.
Therefore he did not even stop at this point, nor, having said 'You were grafted in,' did he depart, although by this he had made everything plain;
因此他甚至不止於此,也不是說了「你被接上」就罷手,儘管他藉這話已把一切都表明了;
19:176
but nevertheless he dwells upon this man's prosperity, and enlarges his good repute, saying:
'And you became a partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree.'
And he seems indeed to have placed him in the position of an addition;
他固然看似把這人安置在附加者的地位上;
19:179
but he shows him in no way harmed by this, but having all — as much as the branch that has grown up from the root would claim.
For lest, upon hearing 'But you were grafted in,' you should think him diminished when compared with the native branch, see how he makes him equal, saying:
'And you became a partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree;'
that is, you have come into the same nobility, into the same nature.
Then, having rebuked him and said, 'Boast not against the branches,' he seems indeed to console the Jew, but shows his worthlessness and his great dishonour.
For this reason he did not say, 'Boast not,' but, 'Boast not against them' — do not boast against those men so as to break them off;
為此他沒有說「不可誇口」,而是說「不可向他們誇口」——不可向那些人誇口,以致把他們折斷;
19:185
for indeed you stand in what is theirs, you enjoy what is theirs.
Do you see how he seems indeed to rebuke these, but bites those? 'But if you do boast against them,' he says, 'it is not you that bear the root, but the root you.'
What then is this to the branches that were cut off? Nothing.
For as I said before, a certain shadow
of feeble consolation he seems to devise, and in the very act of directing his words at the man from the Gentiles, he deals them a mortal blow.
For having said, 'Boast not against them,' and that 'If you do boast against them, it is not you that bear the root,' he showed the Jew that the things which had come to pass were worthy of boasting, even if one ought not to boast against them;
因為他說了「不可向他們誇口」,又說「你若向他們誇口,可知不是你托著根」,便向猶太人顯明:那所成就的事本是值得誇耀的,縱使人不當以此向他們誇口;
19:191
and rousing him and provoking him to faith, and casting himself in the position of an advocate, and showing him the loss which he underwent, and that others hold what was theirs.
'You will say then,' he says, 'The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.'
Again, in the position of an antithesis, he establishes the contrary of the former statement, showing that even the things said a little before he did not say as his primary meaning, but as drawing them on.
For it is no longer by their transgression that salvation came to the Gentiles, nor is their transgression the riches of the world, nor were we saved because they fell, but the contrary.
And he shows that the providence towards the Gentiles was also primary, even if he seems to fashion what has been said otherwise;
他並顯明那向著外邦人的眷顧本是首要的,縱使他看似以別種方式來構築所說的話;
19:196
and he weaves the whole passage through antithesis, freeing himself from the suspicion of hostility, and making his discourse readily acceptable.
Then he also strikes fear again, saying:
'By unbelief they were broken off, but you stand by faith, having been grafted in.'
Behold again another commendation of them, and an accusation of those men.
But again he checks their swelling pride, adding and saying:
'Do not be high-minded, but fear.'
For the matter is not one of nature, but of faith and of unbelief.
And he seems again to silence the man from the Gentiles, but he teaches the Jew that one must not cling to kinship of nature;
他看似又堵住那出於外邦之人的口,實則是教導猶太人:人不當倚靠本性上的親屬關係;
19:204
And he did not say, 'Be humble,' but, 'Fear;'
他沒有說「要謙卑」,而是說「要懼怕」;
19:205
for presumption produces contempt and slothfulness.
Then, being about to portray their calamity in tragic terms, so as to make his discourse less burdensome, he sets it forth in the guise of a rebuke directed at that man, saying thus:
For if God did not spare the branches that were natural,
And he did not say, 'Neither will he spare you,' but, 'Take heed lest he also spare not you'—
thereby softening the harshness of the saying, and making the believer full of holy dread, while at the same time drawing in the one group and restraining the other.
Behold, then, the kindness and the severity of God.
Upon those who fell, severity;
對那跌倒的人,是嚴厲;
19:212
but upon you, kindness—if you continue in his kindness; for otherwise you also shall be cut off.
And he did not say, 'Behold, then, your own good achievement, behold your own labours,' but 'the love of God for man,' showing that the whole is the work of grace from above, and preparing him to tremble.
For the very ground on which you might boast is the same that makes you afraid.
For since the Master has become kind toward you, on this very account fear;
既然主人對你成了恩慈的,正因如此你當懼怕;
19:216
for the good things do not remain fixed and immovable for you, if you grow slothful;
因為你若懈怠,這些美善之事於你並非固定不移;
19:217
just as neither do the evil things remain for those others, if they change.
'For you also,' he says, 'if you do not continue in the faith, shall be cut off.'
'And those others, if they do not continue in their unbelief, shall be grafted in.'
For God did not cut them off, but they themselves were broken off, and fell.
And he well said, 'They were broken off';
他說得好:「他們被折斷了」;
19:222
for never did he thus cast them out, although often and in many ways they had sinned.
Do you see how great is the authority of the will? how great the power of the purpose? For none of these things is immovable, neither your good nor his evil.
Do you see how he both raised up the one who was in despair, and restrained the other who was over-confident? So neither must you, on hearing of severity, give up in despair, nor you, on hearing of kindness, become over-bold.
For this reason he cut you off severely, that you might long to return;
神為此嚴厲地把你砍下,好叫你渴望歸回;
19:226
for this reason he showed kindness toward you, that you might continue.
And he did not say, 'in the faith,' but 'in the kindness'—that is, if you do things worthy of God's love toward man;
他並沒有說「在信心裡」,而是說「在恩慈裡」——就是說,你若行事配得上神對人的慈愛;
19:228
Do you see how he neither let those others lie prostrate, nor allowed these to think highly of themselves, but even provoked these to jealousy, again through those others granting the Jew to stand in this one's place, just as the former had beforehand taken the latter's ground? And the one from the Gentiles he makes to fear on account of the Jews and of what befell them, that they may not be lifted up against them;
你看見他怎樣既不讓那些人倒臥不起,也不讓這些人自高,反倒激動這些人發憤,並且藉著那些人,再叫猶太人得以站在這人的地位上,正如那人先前奪取了這人的地土一樣嗎?他叫那外邦人因猶太人並臨到他們的事而懼怕,免得他們向猶太人自誇;
19:229
but the Jew he prepares to take courage from what was granted to the Greek.
'For you too,' he says, 'shall be cut off, if you grow slothful;'
19:231
for the Jew too was cut off;
因為那猶太人也被砍下了;
19:232
he shall be grafted in, if he be zealous;
他若殷勤,就必被接上去;
19:233
for you too were grafted in.
And very prudently he turns the whole discourse toward the one from the Gentiles—a thing he is ever wont to do, correcting the weak under cover of a rebuke to the stronger.
This too he does at the end of the Epistle, when discussing the observance concerning meats.
Then he establishes his point also from things past, and not from things to come only;
接著他不單從將來的事,也從過去的事來確立這事;
19:237
which was the more persuasive to the hearer.
And being about to maintain an irrefutable sequence of reasonings, he first places his proof upon the power of God.
For even if they have been cut off and cast away, and others have taken their place beforehand, not even so should you despair;
因為他們縱然被砍下、被丟棄,別人也先佔了他們的地位,你仍不可絕望;
19:240
'For God is able,' he says, 'to graft them in again,' he who does even the things that are beyond hope.
But if you seek also an order of facts and a sequence of reasonings, you have the example from your own case with even greater abundance.
'For if you,' he says, 'were cut off from the olive that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a good olive tree, how much more shall these, who according to nature shall be grafted into their own olive tree?' For if faith prevailed in that which is contrary to nature, much more shall it prevail in that which is according to nature.
For if this man, cut off from his own natural fathers, came contrary to nature unto Abraham, much more shall you be able to recover your own. For in the case of the Gentile, the evil was according to nature;
因為這人既從他天生的列祖上被砍下,逆著性歸到亞伯拉罕那裡,何況你更能取回你原有的。因為在那外邦人身上,惡是順乎本性的;
19:244
for he was a wild olive by nature;
因為他天生是野橄欖;
19:245
for it was contrary to nature that he was grafted into Abraham;
因為他被接在亞伯拉罕身上乃是逆著性的;
19:246
but with you the contrary is true: the good is according to nature;
但在你身上卻正相反:善是順乎本性的;
19:247
for you shall be fixed not in an alien root, as the Gentile, but in your own, if you are willing to return.
Of what forgiveness, then, would you be worthy, when, though the Gentile availed to do that which is contrary to nature, you cannot avail even in that which is according to nature, but betray even this? Then, since he had said 'contrary to nature' and 'you were grafted in,' lest you should suppose the Jew to have some advantage, he again corrects it, saying that he too is grafted in;
那麼,當那外邦人尚能行逆性之事,你卻連順性之事也無力去行,反倒連這也丟棄了,你還能得著甚麼赦免呢?接著,他既說了「逆著性」和「你被接上去」,恐怕你以為猶太人有甚麼優越之處,就再加以糾正,說他也是被接上去的;
19:249
'How much more shall these,' he says, 'who according to nature shall be grafted into their own olive tree?' And again, 'God is able to graft them in.'
And before this too he says, that if they do not continue in their unbelief, they shall be grafted in.
But when you hear him continually saying 'contrary to nature' and 'according to nature,' do not think that he means that unchangeable nature, but rather that by these terms he is indicating what is likely and consequent, and again what is unlikely.
For good things and things not such are not matters of nature, but of will and purpose alone.
Consider also how he avoids giving offence.
For having said that 'you too shall be cut off, if you do not continue in the faith, and these shall be grafted in, if they do not continue in their unbelief,' he lets go the more gloomy part, and dwells on the more cheering, and ends with this very thing, weaving great hopes for the Jews, if they should be willing.
'For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own conceits;'
calling it here a 'mystery,' that which is unknown and unspeakable, and which has much of wonder and much of the paradoxical about it;
他在這裡稱那不為人知、不可言傳的事為「奧祕」,這事滿有奇妙,也滿有出人意料之處;
19:257
'Behold, I tell you a mystery: we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed.'
What, then, is the mystery? 'That blindness in part is happened to Israel.'
Here again he strikes at the Jew, while seeming to restrain the one from the Gentiles.
And what he says is of this sort, the same as he had said before, that the unbelief is not entire but partial—just as when he says:
'But if any have caused grief, he has not grieved me, but in part—that I may not overcharge you all;'
and, 'If first I be somewhat filled with your company in part.'
So indeed here also he says this, the same which he had said above:
'God has not cast away his people, whom he foreknew?' And again, 'What then? Did they stumble that they should fall? God forbid.'
This same thing he says here also:
that the nation is not utterly plucked up, but even now many have believed, and are again about to believe.
Then, since he had promised a great thing, he brings forward the prophet as a witness, thus speaking.
For that blindness had come to pass, he adduces no testimony;
至於硬心已經臨到這事,他並不引證據;
19:269
but that they shall believe and be saved, he again brings in Isaiah crying aloud and saying:
'There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.'
setting a mark of the salvation, that no one may draw it back and join it to the former times, he says:
'And this is my covenant with them, when I shall take away their sins;'
not when they are circumcised, not when they sacrifice, not when they perform the other legal ordinances, but when they obtain remission of sins.
If therefore this has been promised, but has not yet come to pass upon them, nor have they enjoyed the remission that is through baptism, it shall assuredly be;
所以這事既已應許,卻尚未在他們身上實現,他們也還未享受那藉著洗禮而來的赦免,那麼這事必定要成就;
19:275
'For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance.'
And not by this alone does he comfort them, but also by what has already come to pass;
他不單以此安慰他們,也以那已經成就的事安慰他們;
19:277
And what came to pass as a consequence, this he sets down as though it were the primary purpose, speaking thus:
As concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake; but as touching the election they are beloved for the fathers' sake.
For lest he who is of the Gentiles should be puffed up, saying, 'I stand fast,' he does not say to him, 'What might have been?' but 'What has come to pass?'—and by this he restrains him, saying: As concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake.
For since you were called, they became the more contentious.
Yet even so God did not cut short your calling, but waits for all those of the Gentiles who are to believe to come in, and then they too shall come.
Then he bestows upon them yet another grace, saying:
But as touching the election they are beloved for the fathers' sake.
And what does this mean? For where they are enemies, there is their punishment;
這是什麼意思呢?因為在他們作仇敵之處,就有他們的刑罰;
19:285
but where they are beloved, the virtue of their forefathers profits them nothing, unless they believe.
Yet nevertheless, as I said before, he does not cease consoling them with his words, that he may draw them on. Wherefore, establishing from another quarter what he had said before, he declares:
For as ye in times past were disobedient to God, but now have obtained mercy through their disobedience;
「你們從前不順服神,如今因他們的不順服,倒蒙了憐憫;
19:288
even so have these also now been disobedient to your mercy, that they also may obtain mercy.
For God hath shut up all unto disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.
Here he shows that those of the Gentiles were first called, then, when they would not, the Jews were chosen, and that the same thing happened again afterwards;
他在此指出,外邦人先蒙召,隨後當他們不肯時,猶太人便被揀選了,其後同樣的事又再次發生;
19:291
for when the Jews would not believe, the Gentiles were brought in again.
But he does not stop at this point, nor does he bring the whole matter to a close in their casting away, but in their being shown mercy once more.
See how much he grants to those of the Gentiles;
看哪,他賜給外邦人何等的分量;
19:294
as much as before he granted to the Jews.
For since you, he says—you who were once of the Gentiles—were disobedient, the Jews came in;
他說,因為既然你們——你們這些從前作外邦人的——不順服了,猶太人便進來了;
19:296
again, since these were disobedient, you came in.
19:297
Yet they shall not perish utterly to the end;
然而他們不至於最終永遠滅亡;
19:298
For God hath shut up all unto disobedience;
「因為神將眾人都圈在不順服之中」;
19:299
that is, he convicted them, he showed them to be disobedient, not that they should remain disobedient, but that through the contention of the one party he might save the other—these through those, and those through these.
You were disobedient, and these were saved;
你們不順服了,這些人便得救了;
19:301
again these were disobedient, and you were saved;
後來這些人不順服了,你們便得救了;
19:302
yet you were not saved in such a way as to be cast out again, as the Jews were, but so that, abiding, you might draw them on by your zeal.
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments!
Here, having gone back to former times, and having considered God's dispensation from on high—that dispensation which reaches from the making of the world unto the present—and having reckoned how variously he had ordered all things, Paul was amazed and cried aloud, giving his hearers assurance that what he had said would assuredly come to pass.
For he would not have cried aloud and been amazed, unless this were altogether certain to come to pass.
And that it is a depth, he knows;
至於這是一個深淵,他是知道的;
19:308
for the utterance is that of one who wonders, not of one who knows the whole.
But having marveled and been amazed at his goodness, and as far as it lay within his power, he proclaimed it by two intensive words, riches and depth; and he was astonished that God both willed and had power to do these things, and by means of contraries wrought the contraries.
How unsearchable are his judgments!
For it is not only impossible to comprehend them, but impossible even to search them out.
And his ways past finding out.
For these too can not only not be known, but not even be sought out.
For not even I, he says, have found out all things, but a small part only, not the whole;
他說,連我也沒有尋見一切,只尋見一小部分,並非全部;
19:315
for he alone knows his own things clearly.
of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? Now what he means is this:
that being thus wise, he is not wise from any other source, but he himself is the fountain of good things;
神既是這樣智慧,他並非從別處得著智慧,而是他自己就是眾善的泉源;
19:318
and having wrought so great things and freely bestowed them upon us, he did not give them as having borrowed them from another, but making them well up from his own store; nor as owing a return to anyone, as though he had received something from him, but himself ever taking the lead in his benefactions.
For this most of all belongs to wealth: to overflow and to have no need of another.
For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things.
He himself devised, he himself made, he himself holds all together;
是他自己設計,是他自己造成,是他自己維繫一切;
19:322
for he is both rich, and needs not to receive from another;
因為他既是富足的,就不需要從別人有所領受;
19:323
and he is wise, and needs no counsellor.
Why do I speak of a counsellor? No one can even know his things, save only he himself, the rich and the wise one.
For indeed it is a mark of great riches to make those of the Gentiles thus wealthy, and of great wisdom to make those who were inferior to the Jews into teachers of the Jews.
Then, since he was amazed, he also offers up thanksgiving, saying:
To him be the glory for ever.
For whenever he says some such great and unutterable thing, he ends in wonder with a doxology of glory.
This he does also in the case of the Son;
他論到聖子時也是這樣行;
19:330
for there too, having marveled, he added this very same thing which he added here also:
Of whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God blessed for ever.
Him therefore let us also imitate, and everywhere glorify God through diligence in our manner of life; nor let us trust in the virtues of forefathers, knowing the example of the Jews.
For this kinship is not, no, it is not the one that holds among Christians, but rather kinship according to the Spirit.
Thus even the Scythian becomes a child of Abraham, while Abraham's own child again becomes more of a stranger than the Scythian.
Let us therefore not trust in the good deeds of our fathers; but even if you have an admirable parent, do not think this suffices you for salvation, or for honor and glory, unless you become his kinsman in your ways;
所以我們不要倚靠父輩的善行;即使你有一位可敬的父親,也不要以為這對你的救恩、或尊榮與榮耀就足夠了,除非你在品行上與他成為同類;
19:336
just as, on the other hand, even if you have a base parent, do not think you are thereby condemned and put to shame, provided you order your own affairs well.
For what is more dishonorable than the Gentiles? Yet nevertheless by faith they quickly became kinsmen of the saints.
And what is more nearly related than the Jews? Yet nevertheless because of their unbelief they were made strangers.
For that kinship is one of nature and of necessity, according to which we are all kinsmen;
因為那一種親屬關係是本於本性和必然的,按照它我們眾人都是親屬;
19:340
for we have all come from Adam, and one man could not be more of a kinsman to another than any other is, whether by reason of Adam, or by reason of Noah, or by reason of the earth, the common mother of all;
因為我們眾人都是從亞當而來的,無論是按亞當的緣故、或按挪亞的緣故、或按大地這眾人共同的母親的緣故,任何人都不會比別人更算得親屬;
19:341
but the kinship worthy of crowns is that which separates us from the base.
For here it is not possible for all to be kinsmen, but only those of like manners;
因為在這裡不可能人人都是親屬,唯有那些品行相同的人才是;
19:343
nor do we call brothers those who were born of the same birth-pangs as ourselves, but those who display the same zeal.
Thus also Christ calls them children of God, and thus again, on the contrary, sons of the devil, and thus of disobedience, and thus of Gehenna, and thus of perdition.
Thus also Timothy was Paul's child by virtue, and was called his true child, whereas of his sister's son we do not so much as know the name;
提摩太也是這樣,因著美德作了保羅的兒子,並被稱為他真正的孩子;而保羅妹妹之子,我們連名字也不知道;
19:346
and yet the latter was related to him according to nature.
But this man was separated both by nature and by place (for he was a citizen of Lystra);
但這人無論按本性或按地域都是相隔遙遠的(因為他是路司得的居民);
19:348
and yet, for all that, he became nearer than all others.
Let us therefore ourselves also become children of the saints; or rather, let us become children of God as well.
For that it is indeed possible to become children of God, hear what He says:
'Be therefore perfect, as your Father who is in the heavens.'
For this reason too, when we pray we call Him Father, not only reminding ourselves of His grace, but also of virtue, that we may do nothing unworthy of such kinship.
'And how,' one asks, 'is it possible to be a son of God?' By being freed from all the passions, and by showing gentleness toward those who insult and wrong us;
有人問:「怎樣才能作神的兒子呢?」乃是要脫離一切的情慾,並且對那些侮辱我們、虧負我們的人顯出溫和;
19:354
for your Father too is such toward those who blaspheme Him.
For this reason, though He said much on many occasions, nowhere does He say, 'That you may become like your Father';
正因如此,祂雖多次說了許多話,卻沒有一處說:「使你們可以像你們的父」;
19:356
but when He said, 'Pray for those who despitefully use you, do good to those who hate you,' then it was that He appointed this reward.
For nothing so brings us near to God and makes us like Him as this good achievement.
For this reason Paul too, when he says, 'Be imitators of God,' says, 'Become so in this respect.'
For while we have need of all good achievements, we have need most of all of loving-kindness and gentleness, since we ourselves also stand in need of much loving-kindness.
For indeed we transgress in many things every day;
因為我們實在天天在許多事上犯錯;
19:361
wherefore we have great need of mercy.
But the 'much' and the 'less' are not judged by the measure of what is given, but by the capacity of the substance of those who give.
Let not, then, the rich man be high-minded, nor let the poor man be cast down as one who gives but little;
所以,富人不要自高,窮人也不要因所給的少而灰心喪志;
19:364
for often this latter has given more than the former.
We ought not, therefore, to bewail ourselves on account of poverty;
所以我們不當因貧窮而自憐自嘆;
19:366
for it even makes almsgiving easier for us.
For he who possesses much is held fast by pride and by a greater craving for his possessions;
因為那擁有許多財物的人,被自負與更大的貪慾所轄制;
19:368
but he who has little is freed from both these tyrannies;
但那擁有不多的人,卻脫離了這雙重的暴政;
19:369
and thus he finds more occasions for doing good.
For this man will readily go even to the prison, and will visit the sick, and will give a cup of cold water;
因為這樣的人樂意去到監獄,探望病人,遞上一杯涼水;
19:371
but that other man will accept none of these things, being inflamed as he is by his wealth.
19:372
Do not, then, be despondent on account of poverty;
所以,不要因貧窮而灰心;
19:373
for poverty even makes the commerce of the heavens easier for you.
And even if you have nothing, but have a soul that suffers with others, for this too a reward shall be laid up for you.
For this reason Paul too enjoined us to weep with those who weep, and commanded that we be as those bound together with the prisoners.
For not only to those who weep does it bring some comfort that there are many who suffer with them, but also to those who are in other circumstances;
因為有許多人與之同受苦痛,這不僅給哀哭的人帶來安慰,也給那處在別種困境中的人帶來安慰;
19:377
for there are cases where a word is no less able than money to restore one who has been afflicted.
For it was for this reason that God commanded us to give money to those in need—not only that He might relieve their poverty, but also that He might teach us to suffer together with the ills of our neighbor.
For this reason too the lover of money is hateful, not only because he overlooks those who are in poverty, but because he also trains himself in cruelty and much inhumanity;
正因如此,貪愛錢財的人是可憎的,不僅因為他漠視那些身處貧困的人,也因為他把自己操練成殘忍與大大的無情;
19:380
just as, on the other hand, he who despises money for their sake is for that very reason lovable, because he becomes merciful and full of loving-kindness.
And Christ too, when He calls the merciful blessed, does not pronounce blessed and praise only those who show mercy through money, but also those who do this through their disposition of will.
Let us therefore make this soul of ours ready for mercy, and all good things will follow.
For he who has a loving-kind and merciful disposition, if he has money, will give it forth; if he sees anyone in calamity, he will weep and lament; if he comes upon one who is being wronged, he will stand up for him; if he beholds one being maltreated, he will stretch out a hand.
For having the treasure of good things, namely the loving-kind and merciful soul, he will pour forth from it all things on behalf of the brethren, and will enjoy all the rewards laid up with God.
In order, then, that we too may attain these things, let us before all else make our soul gentle.
For thus, even while we are here, we shall work countless good deeds, and shall enjoy the crowns that are to come;
因為這樣,我們即使還在今世,也必行出無數的善事,並且必享受那將來的冠冕;
19:387
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and loving-kindness [of our Lord Jesus Christ], and so forth.
