Fear the Lord, he said, and keep his commandments. Keeping the commandments of God, then, you shall be powerful in every deed, and your deed shall be beyond compare; for fearing the Lord you shall do all things well. This is the fear which you must fear, and so be saved.
But do not fear the devil; for fearing the Lord you shall have dominion over the devil, because there is no power in him. And in the one in whom there is no power there is no fear either; but in the one in whom is the glorious power, in him there is also fear. For everyone who has power has fear; but the one who has no power is despised by all.
There are, then, two kinds of fear: for if you wish to do evil, fear the Lord, and you will not do it; and again, if you wish to do good, fear the Lord, and you will do it. So the fear of the Lord is strong and great and glorious. Fear the Lord, then, and you shall live to him; and as many as fear him and keep his commandments shall live to God.
Why, I said, lord, did you say concerning those who keep his commandments, They shall live to God? Because, he said, all creation fears the Lord, but does not keep his commandments. To those, then, who fear him and keep his commandments, to them belongs life with God; but to those who do not keep his commandments, neither is there life in him.
