Again he said to me: Love truth, and let all truth proceed from your mouth, so that the spirit which God caused to dwell in this flesh may be found truthful among all men, and so the Lord who dwells in you may be glorified; for the Lord is truthful in every word, and in him there is no falsehood.
Those, then, who lie set the Lord at nought and become robbers of the Lord, not delivering back to him the deposit which they received. For they received from him a spirit that does not lie. If they give this back as a lying spirit, they have defiled the commandment of the Lord and have become robbers.
When I heard these things I wept bitterly. Seeing me weeping he said: Why do you weep? Because, I said, lord, I do not know whether I can be saved. Why? he said. Because, I said, lord, never in my life have I spoken a true word, but I always spoke craftily with everyone and made my falsehood appear true to all men; and no one ever contradicted me, but my word was believed. How then, I said, lord, can I live, having done these things?
You, he said, think rightly and truly; for you ought to have walked in truth as God's servant, and a wicked conscience ought not to dwell with the spirit of truth, nor to bring grief upon the reverent and true Spirit. Never, lord, I said, have I heard such words so exactly.
Now then, he said, you hear: keep these things, so that even the former lies you spoke in your business dealings, these being found to be true, those too may become trustworthy; for those too can become trustworthy. If you keep these things and from now on speak all truth, you shall be able to gain life for yourself; and whoever hears this commandment and abstains from the most wicked lie shall live to God.
