I am exceedingly grieved on account of Valens, who was once made an elder among you, that he so disregards the office that was given to him. I admonish you, therefore, to keep yourselves from covetousness and to be chaste and truthful. Keep yourselves from all evil.
But he who cannot govern himself in these matters, how can he prescribe this to another? If anyone does not keep himself from covetousness, he will be defiled by idolatry and will be judged as though among the Gentiles, who know not the judgement of the Lord. Or do we not know that the saints shall judge the world? as Paul teaches.
But I have neither perceived nor heard any such thing among you, among whom the blessed Paul laboured, you who are in the beginning of his epistle. For concerning you he boasts in all the churches that at that time alone had come to know the Lord; for we had not yet come to know him.
Therefore, brothers, I grieve greatly for that man and for his wife; may the Lord grant them true repentance. Be sober, therefore, you also in this matter, and do not regard such people as enemies, but call them back as suffering and erring members, that you may save the whole body of you. For in doing this you build up yourselves.
