12:1
Likewise again He defines concerning the cross in another prophet, who says: "And when shall these things be accomplished? says the Lord. When a tree shall be bent and shall rise, and when blood shall drop from a tree." You have again concerning the cross and concerning Him who was to be crucified.
12:2
And again He speaks to Moses, when Israel was warred upon by the foreigners, and that He might remind them, as they were warred upon, that they were delivered to death because of their sins: the Spirit speaks to the heart of Moses, that he should make a type of the cross and of Him who was to suffer, that, He says, unless they hope upon Him, they shall be warred upon forever. Moses, then, set one shield upon another in the midst of the battle, and standing higher than all stretched out his hands, and so again Israel prevailed. But then, whenever he lowered them, they were being slain.
12:3
To what end? That they might know that they cannot be saved unless they hope upon Him.
12:4
And again in another prophet He says: "All the day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient people, who gainsay my righteous way."
12:5
Again Moses makes a type of Jesus—that He must suffer, and that He Himself will give life, whom they will think they have destroyed—in the sign given when Israel was falling (for the Lord caused every serpent to bite them, and they were dying, since the transgression came through the serpent in Eve), that He might convict them, that because of their transgression they should be delivered to the affliction of death.
12:6
Finally, indeed, Moses himself, having commanded: "You shall have neither molten nor graven image for your god," he himself does it, that he might show a type of Jesus. So Moses makes a bronze serpent and sets it up gloriously, and by proclamation calls the people.
12:7
Coming, then, to the same place they entreated Moses to offer up a prayer for them concerning their healing. And Moses said to them: When, he says, any of you is bitten, let him come to the serpent set upon the wood, and let him hope, believing that it, though dead, is able to give life, and immediately he shall be saved. And so they did. You have again also in these things the glory of Jesus, that in Him are all things and unto Him.
12:8
What does Moses say again to Jesus, the son of Nun, when he gave him this name, since he was a prophet, that all the people only might hear? That the Father reveals all things concerning His Son Jesus.
12:9
Moses, then, says to Jesus, son of Nun, having given him this name, when he sent him as a spy of the land: "Take a book in your hands and write what the Lord says, that the Son of God shall cut off by the roots the whole house of Amalek in the last days."
12:10
Behold again Jesus, not son of man but Son of God, and manifested in the flesh by a type. Since, then, they were about to say that the Christ is the son of David, David himself prophesies, fearing and understanding the error of sinners: "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool of your feet."
12:11
And again Isaiah speaks thus: "The Lord said to my Christ the Lord, whose right hand I have grasped, that nations might hearken before Him, and I will break in pieces the strength of kings." Behold how David calls Him Lord, and does not call Him son.
