'For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.'
10:2
Again he rouses their eagerness, because of the many trials that were being brought upon them.
10:3
For it was likely that on account of his absence they had become somewhat weaker for this.
10:4
那麼他說什麼呢?我們不必因受苦而希奇,也不必驚慌;
What then does he say? We must not marvel that we suffer ill, nor be disturbed;
10:5
for indeed we reap many gains therefrom.
10:6
And the things before he had said, namely, that we both carry about the dying of Jesus, and
10:7
furnish a very great demonstration of His power.
10:8
他說:「為要顯明這莫大的能力是出於神」;
'For that,' he says, 'the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God';
10:9
並且我們顯出復活的明證;
and we bring forth a clear proof of the resurrection;
10:10
'For that,' he says, 'the life of Jesus may be made manifest in our mortal flesh.'
10:11
And since together with these things he had said that our inward man also becomes better in this way—
10:12
他說:「所以我們外體雖然毀壞,內心卻一天新似一天」;
'For though our outward man,' he says, 'perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day';
10:13
showing again that this being scourged and driven about is so profitable, he adds, saying that when this comes to its full completion, then the countless good things will spring up for those who have endured these sufferings.
10:14
For lest, hearing that your outward man is perishing, you should grieve, he says that when this comes utterly to pass, then above all you shall rejoice, and shall arrive at a better lot.
10:15
所以,當外體如今部分毀壞時,我們不但不該憂傷,反倒該渴求這毀壞的全部;
So that not only ought we not to grieve when it is now perishing in part, but we ought even to seek the whole of this dissolution;
10:16
因為惟有這樣,才最能引你進入不朽壞;
for this above all leads you to incorruption;
10:17
wherefore also he added, 'For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.'
10:18
因為他既再次操練關於復活的講論——正是他們在其上最為軟弱的事——他便也引用聽眾的判斷,如此加以確立;
For since he is again exercising the discourse concerning the resurrection—the very thing in which they were most sick—he takes to himself also the judgment of his hearers, and thus establishes it;
10:19
但不像先前那樣,倒像是從另一個前提來到這事上的;
but not in the same manner as before, rather as though coming to this from another premise;
10:20
因為他們實在已經被糾正歸正了;
for indeed they had already been set right;
10:21
and he says, 'We know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.'
10:22
有些人固然說,那地上的房屋是指這世界說的;
Some indeed say that the earthly house means this world;
10:23
but I would rather say that he is hinting at the body.
10:24
But consider with me how, by means of the names, he shows the superiority of the things to come over things present.
10:25
因為他既說了「地上的」,就把「天上的」與之相對;
For having said 'earthly,' he set over against it the 'heavenly';
10:26
既說了「帳棚的房屋」,並藉此顯明其易於拆毀、暫時的性質,就把「永存的」與之相對;
having said 'house of the tabernacle,' and having thereby shown its easily dissolved and temporary nature, he set over against it the 'eternal';
10:27
for the name of 'tabernacle' oftentimes indicates that which is temporary.
10:28
Wherefore He says, 'In My Father's house are many mansions.'
10:29
但若祂在某處也稱聖徒的安息之所為「帳棚」,那也不是單單稱作「帳棚」,乃是加上了別的字;
But if anywhere He should also call the resting-places of the saints 'tabernacles,' it is not simply 'tabernacles,' but with an addition;
10:30
for He did not say, 'That they may receive you into their tabernacles,' but, 'into the everlasting tabernacles.'
10:31
And having said 'not made with hands,' he hinted at that which is made with hands.
10:32
那麼怎樣呢?身體是人手所造的麼?斷乎不是;
What then? Is the body made with hands? By no means;
10:33
他在此不是隱指那人手所造的房屋;
but either he is here hinting at the houses that are made with hands;
10:34
or, if not this, then he called the body a 'house of the tabernacle' that is not made with hands.
10:35
For he did not set this in contrast by way of distinction, but by way of augmenting the encomiums and adding the praises.
10:36
'For indeed in this we groan, earnestly longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven.'
10:37
What kind of habitation? tell me.
10:38
And why do we groan now? Because that other is far better.
10:39
And he says it is 'from heaven' on account of its incorruptibility.
10:40
For it is not that a body comes down to us from above, but by this name he signifies the grace that is sent from thence.
10:41
所以我們不該為那部分臨到的試煉如此憂傷,倒該尋求那全面的;
So then, we ought not to grieve so much over the trials that come in part, but rather to seek the universal one;
10:42
as if he said, You groan because you are persecuted, because your outward man is perishing? groan rather because this is not happening with excess, nor is it perishing entirely.
10:43
你看見他怎樣把這論點翻轉到相反的一面,證明我們該為這些事沒有完全成就而歎息——就是他們為之部分成就而歎息的那些事麼?因此他此後不再稱它為「帳棚」,乃稱它為「居所」;
Do you see how he turned the argument round to the contrary, having proved that we ought to groan for these very things not happening entirely—the things for whose partial happening they used to groan? Wherefore he no longer even calls it a 'tabernacle,' but a 'habitation';
10:44
For the tent is easily taken down, but that other dwelling abides perpetually.
10:45
'If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.'
10:46
That is, even though we lay aside the body, we shall not stand there without a body, but with that same body made incorruptible.
10:47
But some interpret it thus, which indeed is most to be preferred:
10:48
'If indeed being clothed we shall not be found naked.'
10:49
For lest all should take confidence merely from the resurrection, he says:
10:50
就是說,領受了不朽壞以及不朽壞的身體;
that is, having received incorruption and an incorruptible body;
10:51
we shall not be found naked—that is, stripped of glory and of security.
10:52
Which also in the Epistle before this one to the Corinthians he was saying, that 'We shall all rise, but each in his own order';
10:53
and, 'There are heavenly bodies, and bodies earthly.'
10:54
The resurrection is common to all, but the glory is no longer common; rather, some rise in honour, others in dishonour, and some unto a kingdom, others unto punishment.
10:55
This, then, he here also made clear when he said, 'If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.'
10:56
'For we that are in this tent do groan, in that we would not be unclothed, but clothed upon.'
10:57
Here again wholly and plainly he stopped the mouths of the heretics, showing that he is not discoursing simply about one body and another, but about corruption and incorruption.
10:58
'For not for this cause do we groan,' he says, 'that we may be rid of the body' (for this we do not even wish, to be unclothed of it), 'but we hasten to be freed from the corruption that is in it.'
10:59
Wherefore he says, 'We would not be unclothed of the body, but clothed upon it with incorruption.'
10:60
'That what is mortal may be swallowed up of life.'
10:61
因為既然許多人以為脫下身體是件難堪的事,他說「我們歎息,並非願意脫離身體」,就與眾人的看法相牴觸;(因為若魂受這樣的苦,並在與身體分離時哀哭,你怎能說「我們歎息,是因為未與身體分離」呢?)於是為使這些反駁不至用來詰難他,他說:「我也不是說,我們歎息是為要脫下身體」(因為沒有人是毫無痛苦地脫下身體的;
For since to many it seemed grievous to lay aside the body, and he was running counter to the judgement of all in saying, 'We groan, not wishing to be rid of it'—(for if the soul suffers such things and laments when parted from it, how sayest thou, 'We groan because we are not parted from it'?)—that therefore these objections might not be brought against him, 'Neither do I say this,' he says, 'that for this cause we groan, that we may lay it aside' (for no one lays it aside without pain;
10:62
seeing that concerning Peter also Christ says, 'They shall bear thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldest not'), but that we may be clothed upon it with incorruption.
10:63
因為這正是我們被身體所壓重的緣故;
For this indeed is that whereby we are weighed down by the body;
10:64
並非因為它是身體,乃是因為我們所披戴的是朽壞而能受苦的身體;
not that it is a body, but that we are clothed about with a corruptible and passible body;
10:65
因為這正是那給我們帶來憂苦的;
for this it is which brings us grief also;
10:66
but the life, when it comes, consumes and spends the corruption—the corruption, not the body.
10:67
'And how does this come to pass?' one asks.
10:68
Wherefore he added, 'Now He that hath wrought us for this selfsame thing is God.'
10:69
Hence he shows that these things were prefigured from the beginning.
10:70
因為這並非如今才被看為美好,乃是當祂起初從塵土塑造我們、創造亞當的時候就是如此;
For not now did this seem good, but when from the beginning He was fashioning us out of the earth and creating Adam;
10:71
and He created him not unto this end, that he should die, but that He might also make him immortal.
10:72
Then, showing its trustworthiness and furnishing the proof, he added, 'Who also gave us the earnest of the Spirit.'
10:73
For both then He formed us for this end, and now He has wrought us unto this through baptism, and of this He gave us no small pledge—the Holy Spirit.
10:74
And he continually calls it an earnest, wishing to prove Him a debtor of the whole, and thereby to make the argument more credible even to the grosser sort.
10:75
'Being therefore always confident, and knowing.'
10:76
「坦然無懼」是就著逼迫、陰謀,以及那接連不斷的死亡而說的;
The 'being confident' is spoken with reference to the persecutions, to the plots, to the continual deaths;
10:77
as though he said, 'Does someone drive thee and persecute thee and slay thee? Fall not down;'
10:78
for the very thing on account of which thou groanest and art in pain, namely that thou art in bondage to corruption—this henceforth he takes away out of the midst, and delivers thee the more speedily from this bondage.
10:79
Wherefore also he says, 'Being therefore always confident'—not in times of ease only, but even in afflictions—'and knowing that whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord';
10:80
'for we walk by faith, not by sight';
10:81
'and we are confident, and are well pleased rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.'
10:82
他把眾事中最大的一件放在末後;
The greatest thing of all he has placed last;
10:83
for than the receiving of incorruption, to be with Christ is better.
10:84
那與我們爭戰、殺害我們的,並不能熄滅我們的生命;
He that wars against us and slays us does not quench our life;
10:85
for not only does he rid thee of corruption and of the burden, but he also speeds thee onward to the Lord.
10:86
Wherefore neither did he say, 'Being in the body,' as of those who are in what is another's and a stranger's.
10:87
'Knowing therefore that whilst we are at home in the body, we are away from home from the Lord;'
10:88
'and we are confident, and are well pleased rather to go away from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.'
10:89
你看見他怎樣把那令人愁苦的、死亡與離世的名稱隱藏起來,並用那極其可羨慕的稱謂取而代之,稱它們為回到神那裏去的還鄉;
Seest thou how, hiding away the grievous things, the names of death and of decease, he has set in their stead the things exceedingly to be desired, calling them a coming home to God;
10:90
and, leaving aside the things which seem to be sweet, the things of this life, he named them from what is grievous, calling the sojourn here an absence from home away from the Lord.
10:91
life? And this he did, that no one might either cling fondly to the present things, but rather be weighed down by them, nor be dejected when about to die, but rather rejoice, as departing unto greater goods.
10:92
Then, lest anyone, hearing that 'We are away from home from the Lord,' should say, 'What sayest thou? Are we then estranged from Him while we are here?', he corrected this beforehand by saying, 'For we walk by faith, not by sight';
10:93
and here indeed we know Him, but not so clearly.
10:94
Which also elsewhere he says, 'In a mirror,' and, 'In a riddle.'
10:95
'And we are confident, and are well pleased.'
10:96
奇哉!他把這論點引到何處去了?引到對死亡極其熱切的渴慕,把那令人厭苦的顯為甘甜,把那甘甜的顯為厭苦;
Wonderful! Whither has he carried round the argument? Unto an extreme longing for death, having shown the burdensome to be sweet, and the sweet to be burdensome;
10:97
for the 'we are well pleased' means 'we desire,' he says.
10:98
What do we desire? 'To go away from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.'
10:99
And this he always does—which I have also shown before—turning the argument of his adversaries round unto its opposite.
10:100
'Wherefore also we are ambitious, whether at home or absent from home, to be well-pleasing unto Him.'
10:101
'For this,' he says, 'is what is sought—whether we be there or here—to live according to His mind;'
10:102
for this is the chief thing.
10:103
So that from this very moment thou hast the kingdom already, without trial.
10:104
For lest again, having come into so great a longing, they should be distressed at the delay of the sojourn there, he here already gives them the sum of the good things.
10:105
And what is this? To be well-pleasing.
10:106
因為單單離去並不算好,乃是帶著美好見證地離去才好,而正因如此,那離去也才成為好的;
For neither is the mere departing good, but the departing well-approved, on account of which that also becomes good;
10:107
nor is the mere being here grievous, but the being here so as to give offence.
10:108
所以你不要以為單單離開身體就夠了;
Think not then that the departure from the body is enough;
10:109
for there is need of virtue everywhere.
10:110
因為正如他既論到復活,卻不容人單單倚靠復活就放膽,說:「倘若穿上了,就不至於赤身」;
For just as, having spoken of the resurrection, he did not suffer men to take confidence in it alone, saying, 'If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked';
10:111
so also, having shown the departure, that thou mightest not think it sufficient for thy salvation, he added the words, 'We must be well-pleasing.'
10:112
Since therefore he had exhorted them by many good things, henceforth he also strikes fear by the more sombre ones.
10:113
For the profitable consists both in the gaining of good things and in the fleeing from evil things—which is Gehenna and the kingdom.
10:114
但既然這一點具有更大的力量,就是逃避刑罰(因為當損失只到得不著美善之物為止時,眾人便容易承受;
But since this has the greater force — the escaping of punishment (for where the loss extends only to not receiving good things, the multitude bear it easily;
10:115
然而若損失竟延及遭受痛苦,他們就不再輕易承受了;
yet if it reaches even to suffering evil, they no longer bear it easily;
10:116
因為他們本應把那頭一種損失看作不堪忍受的,然而由於眾人的軟弱,以及他們對地上之物卑俗的貪戀,這後一種在他們看來反而更為艱難);
for indeed they ought to reckon that first loss as intolerable, but on account of the weakness of the many and their groveling attachment to earthly things, this second appears to them the harder)
10:117
since therefore the giving of good things does not so rouse the common hearer as does the threat of punishments, he necessarily brings his discourse to a close here, saying:
10:118
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.
10:119
Then, having struck fear into the hearer and shaken him by the remembrance of that tribunal, not even here does he set down the painful things apart from the kindly, but has mingled in a certain sweetness, saying:
10:120
That each one may receive the things done through the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
10:121
And in saying these things, he both raises up with hopes those who have done well yet are persecuted, and makes those who have grown slack more earnest through fear.
10:122
And he was also confirming the doctrine concerning the resurrection of the bodies.
10:123
他說,那服事於此事又服事於彼事的身子,斷不會被置於報償之外;
For surely, he says, that which served for this and that will not be set outside the recompense;
10:124
but together with the soul some parts are punished and others are crowned.
10:125
But some of the heretics say that another body is raised.
10:126
難道一個犯了罪,卻是另一個受刑罰?一個行了善,卻是另一個得冠冕?那麼,當保羅說「我們並不願意脫下這個,乃願意穿上那個」時,你們要怎麼回答呢?並且那必朽壞的怎樣被生命所吞滅呢?因為他並沒有說:「叫那必死的或必朽壞的身體被那不朽壞的身體所吞滅」;
One thing sinned, and another is punished? one thing did well, and another is crowned? But what will you say to Paul when he says, 'We do not wish to be unclothed, but to be further clothed'? And how is the corruptible swallowed up by life? For he did not say, 'That the mortal or the corruptible body may be swallowed up by the incorruptible body';
10:127
but, 'That corruption may be swallowed up by life.'
10:128
因為惟有當那同一個身體被復活時,這事才得成就;
For this comes to pass then, when the same body is raised;
10:129
but if, leaving that one aside, God fashions another, it is no longer swallowed up, but corruption remains, having prevailed.
10:130
For this reason this does not happen; rather this corruptible, that is, the body, must put on incorruption.
10:131
因為身體是居於其間的,如今處於這種光景中,日後卻要進入那種光景;
For the body is in the middle, now existing in this state, but hereafter to be in that;
10:132
and on this account it is first in this state, since incorruption cannot be dissolved.
10:133
他說,因為朽壞不能承受不朽壞;
For corruption does not inherit incorruption, he says;
10:134
不然,怎能有不朽壞呢?反倒相反,朽壞被生命所吞滅;
since how could there be incorruption? But on the contrary, corruption is swallowed up by life;
10:135
for the one prevails over the other, but that one no longer prevails over this.
10:136
因為正如蠟被火所熔化,它自己卻不能熔化那火;
For just as wax is melted by fire, but itself no longer melts the fire;
10:137
so also corruption is melted by incorruption and made to vanish, but it can never prevail over incorruption.
10:138
Let us therefore hearken to the voice of Paul, which says that we must be presented before the judgment seat of Christ, and let us sketch out that tribunal, and reckon it to be present now, and that our accounts are being demanded.
10:139
For I will set it forth more amply.
10:140
For Paul, since his discourse was concerning affliction, and he did not wish to afflict them again, did not dwell upon the subject, but having in brief spoken the astringent word — 'Each will receive according to what he did' — he swiftly passed it by.
10:141
那麼,讓我們把它當作如今就在眼前,各人衡量自己的良心,且已然思想那審判者就在眼前,一切都被揭露、被帶到眾人面前;
Let us then reckon it to be present now, and let each one weigh his own conscience, and let him already consider that the Judge is present, and that all things are being uncovered and brought into the midst;
10:142
for we must not simply be presented, but also be made manifest.
10:143
你豈不臉紅麼?你豈不驚駭麼?但若如今,那事尚未臨到,不過是憑著假設所給定、憑著思想所勾勒的,我們就已被良心所毀滅;
Did you not blush? Were you not stricken? But if now, when the matter is not yet present, but merely granted by way of supposition and shaped in thought, we are undone by our conscience;
10:144
當那事真正臨到時,我們將要怎麼辦呢?那時普天下都在場,那時天使與天使長都在,那時列陣接著列陣,眾人奔走,被提到雲中,還有滿了戰兢的行伍;那時號筒此起彼落,那些連綿不絕的聲音?因為即或沒有地獄,單是在那樣大的榮光中被推開、蒙羞退去,這是何等的刑罰!因為就是如今,當君王率領隨從進城時,我們各人看見自己的貧窮,從那景象所得的喜樂,還不及因無分於君王左右之事、不得親近那執政者所忍受的沮喪那樣大;
what shall we do when it actually comes, when the whole inhabited world is present, when angels and archangels are there, when there are ranks upon ranks, and the running of all, and snatchings up upon the clouds, and an array full of trembling? when there are the trumpets one after another, those unceasing voices? For even if there were no hell, to be thrust away amid so great splendor and to withdraw dishonored — how great a punishment is that! For indeed even now, when a king rides in with his retinue, and each of us, beholding his own poverty, we take not so much pleasure from the sight as we endure dejection from having no part in the things about the king, nor being near the sovereign;
10:145
那時又將如何呢?難道你以為不得列於那詩班之中、不得配享那說不出的榮耀、被遠遠拋離那歡樂的盛會與那難以言表的美善之物,乃是輕微的刑罰麼?何況那裡還有黑暗、切齒、不能解開的捆鎖、不死的蟲、不滅的火、患難與窘迫、如那財主一般在火焰中被煎烤的舌頭,我們哀哭卻無人聽見,我們在痛苦中呻吟切齒卻無人理會,我們四處張望卻無處有一人前來安慰;
what will it be then? Or do you think it a small punishment not to be ranked in that choir, not to be counted worthy of the ineffable glory, to be cast far off and away from that festal assembly and those unutterable good things? And when there is also darkness, and gnashing of teeth, and bonds that cannot be loosed, and the worm that never ends, and unquenchable fire, and affliction and anguish, and tongues frying in the flame, like that of the rich man, and we lament and no one hears, and we groan and gnash under the pains and no one heeds, and we look everywhere and nowhere is there anyone to comfort;
10:146
where shall we rank those who are in such a state? What is more wretched than those souls? What is more pitiable?
10:147
因為我們若進到監牢,看見有的蓬頭垢面,有的被捆鎖又飢餓,有的被關在黑暗裡,我們就心碎、戰慄,並竭力行事,惟恐落到那裡去;
For if, when we enter a prison and see some squalid, others bound and hungry, and others shut up in darkness, we are broken down, we shudder, and we do everything so as never to fall into that place;
10:148
那麼當我們被拖拉到地獄那真正的刑房裡去時,我們將要成為何等的光景呢?因為那些捆鎖不是鐵造的,乃是永不熄滅之火所成的;
when we shall be dragged away into the very torture-chambers of hell, what shall we be? For those bonds are not of iron, but of fire that is never quenched;
10:149
nor are those who stand over us of like rank with us, whom it is often possible to appease, but angels, whom it is not even lawful to look upon, being vehemently wroth on behalf of the things wherein we have insulted the Master.
10:150
那裡不像這裡,可以看見有人送銀錢,有人送食物,有人說安慰的話,得著寬解;
It is not, as here, possible to see some bringing money, others food, others words of consolation, and to obtain comfort;
10:151
反倒那裡一切都是不得赦免的;
but all things are without pardon there;
10:152
and even if there be a Noah, even if a Job, even if a Daniel, and he sees his own kin being punished, he does not dare to intercede.
10:153
For it also comes to pass then that the natural sympathy is taken away.
10:154
因為既然有義人竟是惡子的父親,又有義人竟是惡父的兒女;
For since it comes to pass that the righteous are fathers of wicked children, and children of wicked fathers;
10:155
so that the pleasure may be pure and that those enjoying the good things may not be broken down by the constraint of sympathy, I say that this sympathy too is extinguished, and that they themselves join in indignation with the Master against their own bowels.
10:156
因為若尋常的人,當他們看見自己的兒女卑劣時,尚且與他們斷絕、把他們從親屬中割除;
For if ordinary men, when they see their children base, disown them and cut them off from their kinship;
10:157
much more will the righteous do so then.
10:158
所以無論何人,若沒有行出甚麼良善的事,就不要指望美善之物,縱使他有無數的義祖宗也是枉然;
Therefore let no one hope for good things without having wrought something good, even if he have countless righteous forefathers;
10:159
'he did the things through the body.'
10:160
在此我覺得他也是在暗指那些行淫的人,用那裡的畏懼作為抵擋他們的堡壘;
Here it seems to me that he is also hinting at the fornicators, and building up against them the fear from that place;
10:161
and not against those only, but against all who transgress in any way whatsoever.
10:162
所以我們也當留心聽;
Let us therefore also hearken;
10:163
縱使你有情慾的火,就以那火去抵擋它,這火便立時被撲滅而消散;
even if you have the fire of desire, set against it that fire, and this, being straightway quenched, will depart;
10:164
你若想說甚麼不合宜的話,就當思念那切齒,畏懼便要作你的嚼環;
and if you should wish to utter something unseemly, call to mind the gnashing of teeth, and fear will be a bridle to you;
10:165
你若想搶奪,就當聽那審判者吩咐說:「捆起他的手腳來,把他丟在外面的黑暗裡」;
and if you should wish to seize by rapine, hear the Judge commanding and saying, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness';
10:166
and thus you will cast out this desire also.
10:167
你若醉酒、終日沉溺於宴樂,就當聽那財主說:「打發拉撒路來,用指頭尖蘸點水,涼涼我在火焰中被煎烤的舌頭」,卻不得如願;
And if you are drunken and pass your life in surfeiting, hear the rich man saying, 'Send Lazarus, that with the tip of his finger he may cool my tongue frying in the flame,' and not obtaining it;
10:168
你若貪愛奢華宴樂,就當思念那裡的患難與窘迫,你便要輕看眼前這奢華;
and if you long for luxury, call to mind the affliction and anguish there, and you will think nothing of this present luxury;
10:169
and if you are harsh and cruel, remember those virgins who, when their lamps were quenched, thus fell away from the bridal chamber, and you will quickly become loving toward men.
10:170
But are you sluggish and slack? Consider him who hid the talent, and you will become more fervent than fire.
10:171
但你若被貪戀鄰舍財物之心所吞吃麼?就當思想那不死的蟲,你便要輕易地把這病也除去,並將其餘一切都行得正直;
But does the desire for your neighbor's substance devour you? Consider the worm that never ends, and you will easily lay aside this disease also, and set right all the rest;
10:172
for he enjoined nothing burdensome nor grievous.
10:173
Whence then do the commandments appear burdensome to us? From our own slothfulness.
10:174
因為正如我們若殷勤,就連那看似不堪忍受的事也要變為輕省容易;
For just as, if we are diligent, even the things that seem intolerable will be light and easy;
10:175
so if we are slothful, even the bearable things will appear hard to us.
10:176
所以我們既思量這一切,就不要只想到那些安逸享樂的人,乃要想到他們的結局是甚麼;
Reckoning therefore all these things, let us not think of those who live in luxury, but of what is their end;
10:177
這裡固然有污穢與肥胖的肉體,那裡卻有蟲子與火;
here indeed there is filth and gross fleshiness, but there the worm and the fire;
10:178
不要只想到那些搶奪的人,乃要想到他們的結局是甚麼;
not of those who plunder, but of what is their end;
10:179
這裡固然有掛慮、恐懼與煎熬,那裡卻有不能解開的捆鎖;
here indeed are cares and fears and agonies, but there bonds that cannot be loosed;
10:180
不要只想到那些貪愛虛榮的人,乃要想到從這些事所生的是甚麼;
not of those who are enamored of glory, but of what is born from these things;
10:181
here indeed are servilities and dissemblings, but there both an intolerable loss and the being perpetually consumed by fire.
10:182
For if we thus reason with ourselves, and continually chant these and suchlike things against our evil desires, we shall quickly cast out both the love of things present and kindle that of things to come.
10:183
Let us therefore kindle it, and let us set it ablaze.
10:184
For if the mere thought of those good things, dim and shadowy though it is, affords us so great a pleasure,
10:185
consider how great a gladness the clear experience itself will bring us.
10:186
那些享受那些美善之事的人,是有福的,是三重有福的,且是屢次如此;
Blessed and thrice-blessed are they who enjoy those good things, and this many times over;
10:187
just as, on the contrary, wretched and thrice-miserable are they who endure the opposite of these.
10:188
所以,為使我們不屬於後者,而屬於前者,讓我們揀選美德;
In order, then, that we may not be of the latter but of the former, let us choose virtue;
10:189
因為這樣,我們也必得著那將來的美善之福;
for in this way we shall also obtain the good things to come;
10:190
ὧν .
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour unto the Father, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
