「所以我們在你們的安慰中得了安慰;
'Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort;
16:2
and beyond this we rejoiced yet more exceedingly over the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.'
16:3
See again how he heightens their praises, and shows forth their love.
16:4
他先說:「我甚喜樂,因這封信成就了如此多的果效」,又說:「你們得了如此大的益處」;
For having said that 'I was gladdened that the letter accomplished so much,' and that 'You gained so much;'
16:5
他說:「我歡喜,並非因你們憂愁,乃因你們憂愁以致悔改」;
'For I rejoice,' he says, 'not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved unto repentance;'
16:6
並且顯明了他的愛;
and having shown his love;
16:7
因為他說:「我雖然寫信給你們,卻不是為那虧負人的,也不是為那受虧負的,乃是要在你們面前顯明我們為你們所存的熱切關懷」;
for he says, 'Even though I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of him who did the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered the wrong, but for the sake of making manifest our earnest care for you in the sight of you;'
16:8
他又提到他們善意的另一個憑據,這給他們帶來許多讚美,並顯明他們的愛何等真誠;
he mentions again another sign of their goodwill, which brings them much praise and shows the genuineness of their love;
16:9
'For over your comfort,' he says, 'we rejoiced yet more exceedingly over the joy of Titus.'
16:10
And yet this is not the mark of one who loves ardently—to rejoice more over him than over them.
16:11
For it was not so much on his account as on yours that I was gladdened.
16:12
For this reason he adds the cause also, saying, 'Because his inward affections have been refreshed by you all.'
16:13
他沒有說「他自己」,乃說「他的心腸」;
He did not say, 'He himself,' but, 'His inward affections;'
16:14
that is, his love which is towards you.
16:15
And how has it been refreshed? 'By all.'
16:16
For indeed this too is a very great praise.
16:17
'Because if I have boasted anything to him on your behalf.'
16:18
當教師誇口時,那稱讚何等大;
Great is the praise, when the teacher boasts;
16:19
for he says, 'I was not put to shame.'
16:20
'For this reason I rejoiced, that you appeared better, and through your deeds you proved my words true.'
16:21
So that the credit is double to me: both that you gave increase, and that I was not found falling away from the truth.
16:22
'But as we always spoke to you in truth, so also our boasting before Titus has proved to be truth.'
16:23
在這裡他還暗示著另一件事;
Here he hints at yet another thing;
16:24
就是說,正如我們在你們中間所講的一切都憑真理;
namely, that just as among you we uttered all things with truth;
16:25
因為他很可能也曾就此向他們說過許多稱讚的話;
for it is likely that he had also spoken to them many praises concerning this;
16:26
so also the things spoken by us to Titus concerning you have proved true.
16:27
'And his inward affections are more abundantly toward you.'
16:28
This, for the rest, is the mark of one commending that man, as being exceedingly enkindled and bound together with them.
16:29
And he did not say, 'His love,' but, 'His inward affections.'
16:30
Then, lest he should seem to flatter, everywhere he sets down the causes of the affection, so that, as I said, he may both escape flattery and rather spur those men on, turning the praise round upon them, and showing that it was they who furnished him with the beginning and the ground of so great a love.
16:31
因為他既說了「他的心腸對你們越發深厚」,便接著說;
For having said, 'His inward affections are more abundantly toward you,' he added;
16:32
'While he calls to mind the obedience of you all.'
16:33
And this shows Titus too to be grateful toward his benefactors, seeing that, having taken them into his soul, he returned bearing them all with him, and continually remembers them, and has them upon his lips and in his mind.
16:34
And again he adorns the Corinthians the more, in that, having so won him over, they sent him forth.
16:35
接著他又論到他們的順服,以增進他們的熱心;
Then he speaks also of their obedience, intensifying their earnestness;
16:36
wherefore he adds these words, 'How with fear and trembling you received him.'
16:37
Not with love alone, but also with heightened honour.
16:38
Do you see how he bears witness to a double virtue in them, both that they loved him as a father and feared him as a ruler, neither dimming their love because of fear, nor relaxing their fear because of love? This too he said earlier: 'For your being grieved after a godly sort, how much earnestness it wrought in you, nay, what fear, what longing!' 'I rejoice therefore, that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.'
16:39
Do you see that he rejoices rather on their account? 'Because nowhere did you put your teacher to shame,' he says, 'nor do you appear unworthy of my testimony.'
16:40
So that it was not so much on Titus's account that he rejoiced, because he enjoyed so great honour, as on their account, because they displayed such gratitude.
16:41
For lest he should be thought to rejoice rather on that man's account, see how here too he sets down the cause.
16:42
所以正如他在上文說過:「因為我若曾向他為你們誇口,我並沒有蒙羞」;
As therefore above he said, 'Because if I have boasted anything to him on your behalf, I was not put to shame;'
16:43
so also here, 'Because in everything I am of good courage concerning you.'
16:44
'Even if I should have to rebuke, I do not fear that you will break away; even if to boast, I do not
16:45
fear being convicted; even if to praise you as compliant, or as loving, or as having zeal, I am of good courage concerning you.'
16:46
「我說要割除,你們就割除了;
'I said cut off, and you cut off;
16:47
我說要接納,你們就接納了;
I said receive, and you received;
16:48
我說你們在提多的事上是何等偉大可欽佩的人,是懂得敬重教師的人;
I said that you are great and admirable men in the matter of Titus, and men who know how to reverence teachers;
16:49
and you proved these things true through your deeds.'
16:50
And he did not so much learn these things from me as from you.
16:51
At any rate he returned having become an ardent lover of you, since you displayed things beyond my words.
16:52
'Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the Churches of Macedonia.'
16:53
Having lifted them up with his praises, he again lets down an exhortation.
16:54
For it was for this reason that he mingled the praises with the rebuke, so that, descending from rebuke to exhortation, he might not make his discourse hard to receive, but, having smoothed their hearing, might thus prepare the way for the exhortation.
16:55
因為他要論到施捨;
For he wishes to discourse concerning almsgiving;
16:56
wherefore also, taking it up beforehand, he said, 'I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.'
16:57
By what they had already accomplished he also makes them more eager for this present task.
16:58
他並沒有立刻說:「那麼你們就施捨吧」;
And he did not say at once, 'Give alms, then';
16:59
but observe his prudence—how from afar off and from on high he first prepares the way for his discourse.
16:60
'For we make known to you, brethren,' he says, 'the grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia.'
16:61
For lest they be lifted up, he calls the matter a grace; and while recounting the deeds of others, by the praises given to others he makes these men more zealous.
16:62
And he composes two praises for the Macedonians, or rather even three:
16:63
其一,他們高貴地忍受試煉;其二,他們知道憐憫人;其三,他們雖然貧窮,卻在施捨上顯出慷慨;
both that they bear trials nobly, and that they know how to show mercy, and that, being poor, they displayed liberality in almsgiving;
16:64
for their possessions had even been plundered.
16:65
And making this plain he said, when he wrote to them:
16:66
'For you, brethren,' he says, 'became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea, because you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Jews.'
16:67
Hear what afterward he said in writing to the Hebrews:
16:68
'For you accepted with joy the plundering of your possessions.'
16:69
And he calls the matter a grace, not only to restrain them, but also to draw them on, and to render his word free from all envy.
16:70
因此他還加上「弟兄們」這稱呼,好斷絕一切的惡意;
Wherefore he also added the name of 'brethren,' so as to cut off all ill-will;
16:71
for he is about to praise them beyond measure.
16:72
For having said, 'We make known to you the grace of God,' he did not say, 'which was given in this or that city,' but he praises the whole nation, saying, 'in the churches of Macedonia.'
16:73
Then he also describes that very grace.
16:74
'That in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy...'
16:75
你看見他的睿智了嗎?他先陳述另一點——不是他所要說的,而是在那之前的另一件事——好叫人不覺得他是刻意如此,倒像是從別的思路循序而來地帶到這點;
Do you see his prudence? For he first states that other point, not what he intends, but something else before it, so that he might not seem to do this on purpose, but to come to it by a chain of reasoning from another matter;
16:76
這一點他寫信給馬其頓人自己的時候也說過:「你們在大患難中領受了道,藉聖靈所賜的喜樂,成了主的效法者」;
which also, when writing to the Macedonians themselves, he said: 'You became imitators of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit';
16:77
and again, 'From you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and in Achaia, but in every place your faith toward God has gone abroad.'
16:78
But what is the meaning of, 'In a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy'? Both things, he says, happened to them beyond measure—both the affliction and the joy.
16:79
Wherefore also it was a great marvel, that so great an abundance of gladness sprang up for them out of affliction.
16:80
For indeed the affliction not only did not beget sorrow, but even became for them an occasion of joy, and that though it was great.
16:81
And this he said in order to anoint them to be noble and unshaken in their trials.
16:82
νῆς·
因為他們並非平常地受患難,乃是受患難到一個地步,藉著忍耐甚至成為經得起考驗的;
For they were not simply afflicted, but so afflicted as even to become approved through their endurance;
16:83
or rather he does not say 'through endurance,' but that which was more than endurance—joy.
16:84
他也不只是說「喜樂」,而是說「滿溢的喜樂」;
And he does not say merely 'joy,' but 'abundance of joy';
16:85
for it sprang up in them great and unspeakable.
16:86
'And their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.'
16:87
Again both these things beyond measure.
16:88
因為正如他們的大患難生出了大喜樂,並滿溢的喜樂;
For just as their great affliction begot great joy, and an abundance of joy,
16:89
so their great want begot a great wealth of almsgiving.
16:90
when he said, 'It abounded unto the riches of their liberality.'
16:91
For it is not by the measure of what is given, but by the mind of those who bestow, that munificence is judged.
16:92
Wherefore nowhere does he speak of the riches of what was given, but 'the riches of their liberality.'
16:93
And what he means is this:
16:94
Not only did poverty not hinder them from bounty, but it even became an occasion for their abounding, just as the affliction became an occasion for their rejoicing.
16:95
For the poorer they were, the more they showed themselves munificent, and gave with greater readiness.
16:96
Wherefore also he greatly marvels at them, that out of such great poverty they displayed such great munificence.
16:97
For their deep poverty—that is, their great and unspeakable poverty—showed forth their liberality.
16:98
但他沒有說「彰顯」,而是說「格外顯出」;
But he did not say 'showed,' but 'abounded';
16:99
他也沒有說「慷慨」,而是說「慷慨的豐盛」——就是說,足以與他們貧窮之深相稱、相抗衡的;
and he did not say 'liberality,' but 'riches of liberality'—that is, a counterweight to the greatness of their poverty;
16:100
or rather, they displayed a far greater mass of bounty.
16:101
Then he also interprets this more plainly, saying:
16:102
「我可以作見證(這見證人是可信的),他們是按著力量,而且是過了力量」;
'That according to their power I bear witness (a trustworthy witness), and beyond their power';
16:103
that is, 'It abounded unto the riches of their liberality.'
16:104
其實他不僅藉這一句,也藉以下所有的話表明了這事;
But indeed not by this alone, but also by all that follows, he makes it plain;
16:105
Behold a third and a fourth point.
16:106
Both being in affliction, and in poverty.
16:107
And a seventh, that they gave even beyond measure.
16:108
Then, since this is what he especially wishes to establish among the Corinthians—that they give of their own free choice—upon this above all he dwells, saying, 'With much entreaty,' and, 'Beseeching us.'
16:109
It was not we who besought them, but they who besought us.
16:110
Beseeching us for what? For the grace, and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
16:111
你看見他如何又高舉這件事,用尊貴的名稱來稱呼它嗎?因為他們熱切追求屬靈的恩賜,他就把這事稱為「恩典」,好叫他們趕緊奔赴;
Do you see how again he exalts the matter, calling it by honorable names? For since they were zealous for spiritual gifts, he names it a 'grace,' that they might hasten to it;
16:112
and again 'fellowship,' that they might learn that they receive, and do not merely give.
16:113
'This, then, was what they besought of us,' he says, 'namely, that we should undertake such a ministry.'
16:114
This he says both with respect to the amount, and with respect to their afflictions.
16:115
'For we should never have hoped,' he says, 'that, being in so great affliction and poverty, they would even have pressed us so urgently, and made so many entreaties.'
16:116
And he made plain their carefulness in the rest of their life as well, saying:
16:117
'But they first gave themselves to the Lord, and to us by the will of God.'
16:118
因為在一切事上,他們順服的過於我們所指望的;
For in all things they obeyed more than we expected;
16:119
nor, because they showed mercy, did they neglect the other virtues, but they first gave themselves to the Lord.
16:120
What is the meaning of, 'They gave themselves to the Lord'? They dedicated themselves; they were shown to be approved in the faith; they displayed great courage in their trials, orderliness, forbearance, love, and readiness and zeal in all other good things.
16:121
What is the meaning of, 'And to us'? They became obedient to us; they loved us, they obeyed—both fulfilling the laws of God, and being bound together with us through love.
16:122
Observe how here also he shows the intensity, saying:
16:123
They did not obey God in some things, and the world in others, but in all things obeyed Him, and gave their whole selves to God.
16:124
他們也沒有因為施行憐憫,就自高自大;
For neither, because they showed mercy, were they puffed up;
16:125
but having displayed great humility, great obedience, great honor, great heavenly-mindedness, thus also they wrought their almsgiving.
16:126
And what is the meaning of, 'By the will of God'? Since he had said, 'They gave themselves to us,' lest even this seem to be in a merely human way, they did this too according to the mind of God.
16:127
So that we exhorted Titus, that as he had begun before, so also he would complete in you this grace as well.
16:128
And what kind of sequence is this? A close and very apt one, connected with what went before.
16:129
For since we saw them, he says, vehement and fervent in all things—in trials, in almsgiving, in their love toward us, and in the remaining purity of their life—
16:130
that you also might be made equal to them, we sent Titus.
16:131
But he did not say it in this way; yet this is what he made plain.
16:132
For being urged and entreated by those Macedonians, he says, we were anxious about your affairs, lest somehow with respect to them you should fall short.
16:133
Wherefore we also sent Titus, that from this too, being stirred up and reminded, you might emulate the Macedonians.
16:134
For Titus happened to be there when this epistle was being written.
16:135
And he shows that Titus had even taken the lead in this matter before Paul's exhortation:
16:136
'That as he had begun before,' he says.
16:137
Wherefore he also speaks great praises of him—at the outset indeed, saying, 'Because I found not Titus my brother, I had no rest in my spirit';
16:138
and from this point all those things which he has said, and this very thing too.
16:139
因為這也不是小的稱讚,就是他竟然預先開始了;
For this too is no small praise, that he had even begun beforehand;
16:140
for this belongs to a fervent and boiling soul.
16:141
Wherefore he also sent him, thereby instilling in them the strongest incitement to give—namely, the presence of Titus.
16:142
For this reason he also exalts him with praises, wishing to endear the man more vehemently to the Corinthians.
16:143
For this too is a great help toward persuading—that he who gives counsel should be intimately disposed toward them.
16:144
And well does he, having mentioned the almsgiving once and twice and thrice, call the matter 'grace': now saying, 'Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the Churches of Macedonia';
16:145
and now, 'Of their own accord, with much entreaty beseeching us for the grace and the fellowship';
16:146
and again, 'That as he had begun before, so also he would complete toward you this grace as well.'
16:147
因為這是極大的善事,是神的恩賜,人若行得正確,就照著我們的力量使我們與神自己相像;
For this is a great good and a gift of God, and when rightly practiced it makes us, so far as we are able, like to God Himself;
16:148
for this most of all is what makes a man.
16:149
At any rate, one declaring the proof of a man set this down:
16:150
'For a great thing,' he says, 'is a man, and precious is a merciful person.'
16:151
This grace is greater than to raise the dead.
16:152
因為比起奉耶穌的名叫已死的人復活,餵養飢餓的基督乃是大得多的事;
For than raising those who have died in the name of Jesus, far greater is it to feed Christ when He hungers;
16:153
for here you confer a benefit on Christ, but there He confers it on you.
16:154
And the reward lies in doing good, not in receiving good.
16:155
因為在這裡,我是指神蹟的事說,你自己乃是欠神的債;
For here—I mean in the case of the signs—you yourself are debtor to God;
16:156
but in the case of almsgiving, you have God as your debtor.
16:157
所謂賙濟,乃是當它出於甘心樂意,當它出於豐豐富富,當你不以為自己是在給予,倒以為是在領受,當你像是蒙恩、像是得利而非虧損之時;
And it is almsgiving when it is done with readiness, when with bountifulness, when you do not consider yourself to be giving but rather receiving, when you act as one being benefited, as one gaining and not losing;
16:158
for one ought to rejoice, not to be vexed, at showing mercy to another.
16:159
For how is it not absurd, if, while loosing another's despondency, you yourself should become despondent? For then you no longer allow it to remain almsgiving.
16:160
因為你若因解除了別人的憂愁而憂愁,你就顯出極度殘忍與缺乏人性的憑據;
For if you are despondent because you have delivered another from despondency, you display a token of the utmost cruelty and inhumanity;
16:161
for it is better not to deliver at all than to deliver in this way.
16:162
但人哪,你到底為甚麼憂愁呢?是恐怕你的金子減少麼?總之,你若存這樣的心意,就索性不要施捨;
But why are you altogether despondent, O man? Lest your gold should become less to you? Altogether, if you have such a disposition, do not even give;
16:163
if you are not confident that it is multiplied for you in the heavens, do not give.
16:164
But here you seek the recompense.
16:165
Why so? Let almsgiving be almsgiving and not a business transaction.
16:166
Now many indeed have received back even here, yet they did not so receive as thereby to have more than those who did not receive here; but some of these, as being weaker, received it because they were not strongly drawn to the things there.
16:167
正如那些貪嘴、粗俗、作肚腹奴僕的人,被請赴王的筵席,卻不等候合宜的時刻,像小孩子一樣,因搶先動手、又用較差的食物填飽自己,反倒敗壞了自己的歡樂;
And just as the greedy and vulgar and slaves of the belly, when invited to a royal table, not awaiting the fitting moment, like little children spoil their own enjoyment by anticipating it and filling themselves with inferior foods;
16:168
so indeed do these men too, who here seek after and receive their reward, diminish the reward that is there.
16:169
再者,你放債時,寧願過較長的時間才收回本金,甚至或許根本不收回,好叫你藉著遲延賺取更多的利息;
Then, when you lend, you desire to receive back your capital after a longer time—or perhaps not even to receive it back, so that by the delay you may make the interest greater;
16:170
但在這裡你卻立刻討回,而且是在你不會久留於此、乃要永遠住在那邊,不在此受審、乃要在那邊交帳的情形下如此行麼?倘若有人在你不打算居住之處為你建造房屋,你必以這事為虧損;
but here you demand it back at once, and that too when you are not going to be here but there perpetually, when you are not to be judged here but to render your accounts there? And if someone were building houses for you where you were not going to remain, you would have counted the thing a loss;
16:171
yet now you wish to grow rich here, whence you must often depart even before evening? Do you not know that we sojourn in a foreign land, like strangers and pilgrims? Do you not know that it belongs to sojourners to be cast out when they do not expect it nor hope for it? Which is exactly what we too suffer.
16:172
For this very reason, whatever we may build up—
16:173
for the Master does not permit us to take these things and depart, whether we build houses, or buy fields, or slaves, or vessels, or anything else of this kind.
16:174
祂不但不容我們從此地帶著離去,也不將賞賜算給你;
And not only does He not allow us to take from here and depart, but neither does He reckon the reward to you;
16:175
因為祂早已預先告訴你,叫你不要建造、也不要花費在別人的產業上,只要用在你自己的產業上。那麼你為甚麼撇下自己的,卻在別人的東西上勞碌花費,以致喪失你的勞苦與賞賜,並要受最重的刑罰呢?我懇求你不要如此;
for He told you beforehand that you should not build nor spend on what belongs to others, but on what is your own. Why then, forsaking your own, do you labor and spend on what belongs to others, so as to lose both your toil and your reward, and to endure the utmost punishment? Do not so, I beseech you;
16:176
but since by nature we are sojourners, let us become such also by our choice, that we may not become there sojourners and dishonored and cast out.
16:177
因為我們若想在此地作公民,我們就在此地與那邊都無分;
For if we wish to become citizens here, we shall be neither here nor there;
16:178
but if we remain as sojourners, and so pass our life as it befits sojourners to live, we shall receive the boldness of citizens both here and there.
16:179
因為義人縱然一無所有,在此地仍要在眾人的財物中,如同在自己的財物中一樣安然度日,並且往天上去的時候,必看見他那永遠的帳幕;
For the righteous man, even having nothing, will here abide among all men's goods as among his own, and having departed to heaven will behold his eternal tabernacles;
16:180
並且他在此地也絲毫不受那些不如意的事;
and here he will suffer none of the unpleasant things;
16:181
因為既然全地都作他的城,就無人能使他成為異鄉客旅;
for no one will be able to make him a stranger, seeing that he has the whole earth for his city;
16:182
and having received back his own homeland, he will obtain the true riches.
16:183
In order, then, that we may gain both—the things here and the things there—let us use what we have for what is needful.
16:184
因為這樣我們就必作諸天的公民,並得享極大的坦然無懼;
For thus shall we be citizens of the heavens, and shall enjoy much boldness;
16:185
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness [of our Lord Jesus Christ], and so forth.
