But in whatever anyone is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am bold also.
25:2
你再看他怎樣退縮,並如何用推辭與預先的申明;
See again how he draws back, and employs excuse, and a prior correction;
25:3
其實他先前已經說過許多這類的話了;
and yet he has already said many such things;
25:4
「巴不得你們稍微寬容我這一點愚妄」;
'Would that you might bear with me a little in my foolishness';
25:5
又說:「不要有人把我看作愚妄的」;
and again, 'Let no one think me foolish';
25:6
「若不然,你們就把我當作愚妄人接納罷」;
'but if otherwise, yet even as foolish receive me';
25:7
「我所說的,不是照著主說的,乃是像在愚妄裏說的」;
'What I speak, I speak not after the Lord, but as it were in foolishness';
25:8
「既有許多人憑著肉體誇口,我也要誇口」;
'Since many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast';
25:9
and here again, 'But in whatever anyone is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am bold also.'
25:10
He calls it boldness and foolishness to say anything great about oneself, and that too when there is necessity, teaching us superabundantly to flee such a thing.
25:11
因為我們若在行完了一切之後,還必須稱自己為無用的僕人;
For if, after doing all things, we must call ourselves unprofitable;
25:12
when no cause presses, what pardon would he deserve who exalts himself and vaunts? For this reason too the Pharisee suffered what he suffered, and endured shipwreck in harbor, because he was dashed upon this rock.
25:13
For this reason Paul too, though he saw a countless necessity, nevertheless draws back, and continually reminds us that such a thing belongs to foolishness.
25:14
And then at last he ventures boldly, putting forward the defense that arises from necessity, and says, 'Are they Hebrews? So am I.'
25:15
因為並非所有希伯來人都是以色列人;
For it was not the case that all the Hebrews were Israelites;
25:16
since the Ammonites and Moabites were this too.
25:17
Wherefore he added, purifying his nobility of birth, and says, 'Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I.'
25:18
'Are they ministers of Christ? I speak as beside myself—I am more.'
25:19
他不以先前的推辭為足,乃是在此又再度用上它;
He was not content with the former excuse, but from this point again he has employed it;
25:20
'I speak as beside myself—I am more.'
25:21
'I am superior to them and better.'
25:22
其實他有著明確的憑據可證明他的超越;
And yet he had clear proofs of his superiority;
25:23
but nevertheless even so he calls the matter madness.
25:24
And indeed, if they were false apostles, he ought not to have introduced his superiority by way of comparison, but to have done away with their being ministers at all.
25:25
他的確曾抹去它,說:「這樣的人是假使徒,是行事詭詐的工人,裝作基督的使徒」;
He did indeed do away with it, saying, 'False apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ';
25:26
但如今在此他卻不這樣作;
but now he does not do so here;
25:27
for the discourse was about to advance to an examination.
25:28
And no one, when there is no examination, makes a bare declaration, but having first, by way of comparison, laid down the refutation that comes through the facts, he displays it as being also very solid.
25:29
And otherwise, he sets down the opinion of those very men, not his own verdict, saying, 'They are ministers of Christ.'
25:30
And having said, 'I am more,' he advances the comparison, and shows how, not by pronouncing a verdict, but by bringing forward the demonstration that comes through the facts, he maintains the character of his apostleship.
25:31
And leaving aside all the signs, he begins from the trials, speaking thus:
25:32
'In labors more abundantly, in stripes above measure.'
25:33
This is greater than that: to be both struck and scourged.
25:34
And here again there is an intensification.
25:35
'For daily,' he says, 'I die.'
25:36
for often I was delivered over into dangers that held death.
25:37
'Five times I received from the Jews forty stripes save one.'
25:38
Why 'save one'? There was an ancient law that the man who received more than forty stripes should be dishonored in their eyes.
25:39
所以為了免得那擊打者的手勢與衝力多打了過於這數目,以致羞辱了那人,他們就定規只打到少一下;
In order therefore that the sweep and rush of the one striking might not, by bringing on more than the number, dishonor the man, they ordained that he be struck one short of it;
25:40
that even if the one striking should exceed, he might not fall beyond the forty, but remaining within the appointed number, might not dishonor the one being struck.
25:41
'Thrice I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck.'
25:42
And what has this to do with the Gospel? That he was sent forth on long journeys, and those across the sea.
25:43
'A night and a day I have spent in the deep.'
25:44
有人說他是在大海之中,另有人說他是在游泳;
Some say he was in the midst of the open sea, others that he was swimming;
25:45
which indeed is the truer thing to say.
25:46
But that at least was neither worthy of wonder, nor would he have set it down as something greater than the shipwrecks.
25:47
For he was compelled also to ferry across rivers.
25:48
'In perils of robbers, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness.'
25:49
Everywhere the contests were set before me—in places, in regions, in cities, in wildernesses.
25:50
'In perils from the Gentiles, in perils among false brethren.'
25:51
For not only did his enemies assail him, but also those who
25:52
假冒弟兄之情的人也向他下手;
feigned brotherhood struck at him;
25:53
and this required great vigor and great sagacity.
25:54
Perils succeeded toils, and toils perils, one upon another and unremitting, and did not allow him even a little while to draw breath.
25:55
'In journeyings often, in hunger and thirst and nakedness, besides the things that are without.'
25:56
他所略去未提的,比他所列舉的還多;
The things passed over in silence were more than those enumerated;
25:57
or rather, not even those very things which he enumerated can be told, how great they were.
25:58
因為他並未逐一詳述,只把那些數目容易記述且不多的提了出來,說「三次」、「三次」,又說「一次」;
For he did not set them down in detail, but of those whose number was easy to grasp and small, he made mention, saying 'thrice' and 'thrice' and 'once';
25:59
but of the rest he no longer did so, because he had endured them many times over.
25:60
他並不述說藉這些患難所成就的善工——例如他使多少多少人歸主——只述說他為傳福音所受的苦;
And he does not speak of the good works accomplished through them—as, for instance, how many he converted—but only of what he suffered for the sake of the preaching;
25:61
他既顯出謙抑,同時又表明:縱使一無所成,那勞苦的人仍有更多的所得;
at once showing moderation, and at once showing that even if nothing comes of it, there is still something more for him who toils;
25:62
for thus is the reward made full.
25:63
'That which presseth upon me daily.'
25:64
The tumults, the disturbances, the sieges of the populace, and the onsets of the cities.
25:65
For against this above all things did the Jews wage war, since it above all confounded them and was the greatest refutation of their madness—that he should have suddenly gone over to the other side.
25:66
有極大的爭戰向他吹襲而來,來自本族的人、來自外人、來自那些假冒為善的人;
And great was the war that breathed against him, from his own people, from strangers, from those who played the hypocrite;
25:67
and everywhere waves and precipices, in the inhabited world, in the desolate places, on land, on sea, from without, from within.
25:68
他連必需的食物也不充裕,連一件遮體的衣服也沒有,然而這位普世的鬥士竟赤身爭戰,忍飢角力;
And he had not even the necessary food in abundance, nor a bare covering, but the champion of the inhabited world contended naked, and did his boxing while famished;
25:69
so far was he from acquiring wealth.
25:70
And he was not displeased, but gave thanks for these things to the Steward of the contest.
25:71
'The care of all the churches.'
25:72
This is the sum of all: that his very soul was torn apart, and his mind was cut in pieces.
25:73
For even if nothing had assailed him from without, the war within was sufficient—the successive waves, the snowstorms of anxieties, the war of thoughts.
25:74
因為一個人若只照管一個家,有僕人、有管家、有管理者,尚且常因憂慮連氣也喘不過來,即使沒有甚麼事煩擾他;
For if one who provides for a single household, having servants and stewards and managers, often cannot even breathe for anxiety, though there be nothing to trouble him;
25:75
then this man, who had the care not of one household, but of cities and populaces and nations and of the whole inhabited world, and that over matters so great, and with so many who assailed him, and being alone, and suffering so much, and caring as not even a father does for his children—consider what he endured.
25:76
免得你說:「就算他掛心,也不過是泛泛地掛心罷了。」他便又加上他關切的深切程度,說:「有誰軟弱,我不軟弱呢?」他沒有說「我不過與人同擔沮喪」;
For lest you should say, 'What of it, if he was anxious, but anxious only in a general way?'—he added also the intensity of his concern, saying, 'Who is weak, and I am not weak?' He did not say, 'I do not share in the despondency';
25:77
but rather, 'as though I myself were in the very suffering, as though I myself were in the very sickness, so am I troubled and disturbed.'
25:78
'Who is made to stumble, and I burn not?' See again the excess of his grief, how it is present in the very naming of the burning.
25:79
'I am set on fire, I am consumed,' he says.
25:80
至於那些別的苦難,即或劇烈,卻也迅速過去,且帶著永不凋殘的喜樂;
For those other things, even if they were severe, yet they pass swiftly by, and had a pleasure that did not wither;
25:81
but this was what afflicted and straitened him, and pierced through his mind—to suffer such things over each one of the weak, whoever he might be.
25:82
For he did not grieve over the greater ones while despising the lesser, but even the outcast he reckoned among things of necessity.
25:83
所以他才說:「有誰軟弱?」——表明無論那是誰;
Wherefore also he said, 'Who is weak?'—showing that whoever he might be;
25:84
and as if he himself were the Church throughout the inhabited world, so he grieved over each single member.
25:85
'If I must needs glory, I will glory in the things that concern my weakness.'
25:86
Do you see that nowhere does he glory in signs, but in his persecutions and trials? 'For this,' he says, 'is a matter of weakness.'
25:87
And he shows the war to be many-sided.
25:88
因為猶太人與他爭戰,外邦人起來抵擋他,假弟兄向他揮拳角力,真弟兄又因軟弱與跌倒使他憂傷;
For the Jews warred against him, and the Gentiles set themselves against him, and the false brethren did their boxing against him, and the brethren grieved him by being weak and being made to stumble;
25:89
from every side there was tumult and disturbance to him, from his own people, from strangers.
25:90
這就是使徒的特徵;
This is the apostolic character;
25:91
through these things the Gospel is woven.
25:92
'The God and Father of the Lord Jesus knoweth that I lie not.'
25:93
'The governor under Aretas the king guarded the city of the Damascenes, desiring to apprehend me.'
25:94
他為何在此鄭重作證,卻不曾為先前的事這樣作證呢?大概因為這件事年代較久遠,也較不為人所知;
Why does he give assurance of this, when he did so of none of the former things? Because perhaps this was more ancient and more obscure;
25:95
but those things were well known even to them—the care of the churches, and all the rest.
25:96
Consider then how great the war was, if indeed on his account he guarded the city.
25:97
我說到爭戰時,指的乃是保羅的熱心;
And when I speak of the war, I mean the zeal of Paul;
25:98
for had he not breathed vehemently, he would not have kindled the governor to so great a madness.
25:99
These are the marks of an apostolic soul: to suffer so much and nowhere to be overturned, but to bear nobly the things that befall, and neither to rush headlong into dangers nor to leap upon them.
25:100
See then here how he consented to escape the siege, being let down through a window in a basket.
25:101
For even though he longed for his departure hence, yet nevertheless he also loved the salvation of men.
25:102
所以他常設下這樣的計謀,為傳道的緣故保全自己;
Wherefore he often contrived even such things as these, preserving himself for the preaching;
25:103
當時機需要的時候,他也不推辭運用人的方法;
and he did not refuse even to make use of human devices, when the occasion demanded;
25:104
so watchful and wakeful was he.
25:105
在那無可逃避的災禍之處,就唯獨需要恩典;
For where the evils were inescapable, there was need of grace alone;
25:106
但在那試煉尚有分寸之處,他便也運用自己的許多智謀;
but where the trial was measured, he devised many things even of his own;
25:107
and here again reckoning the whole to God.
25:108
正如一點不滅之火的火星落入大海,雖被許多湧來的波濤淹沒,卻仍再度明亮地浮起;
And just as some spark of unquenchable fire, falling into the sea, though many waves come over it is submerged, yet rises up again bright;
25:109
even so also the blessed Paul: now he was overwhelmed as he stood in danger, now, slipping through them, he came up more radiant, prevailing by suffering ill.
25:110
For this is the splendid victory, this the trophy of the Church—thus is the devil struck down, when we suffer ill.
25:111
For when we suffer, he is taken captive and suffers ill, at the very time when he wishes to make us suffer.
25:112
Which very thing also came to pass in the case of Paul.
25:113
And the greater the dangers he brought upon him, the more thoroughly he was himself defeated.
25:114
For it was not one kind of temptation that he devised against him, but manifold and various.
25:115
有些帶來勞苦,有些帶來沮喪,有些帶來懼怕,有些帶來痛苦,有些帶來憂慮,有些帶來羞辱,有些則是這一切同時臨到;
For some brought toil, some despondency, some fear, some anguish, some anxiety, some shame, and some all of these together;
25:116
yet nevertheless in all of them he prevailed.
25:117
And just as though a single soldier, having the whole world at war against him, should move about in the very midst of the enemy's battalions and yet suffer no harm,
25:118
so also Paul, appearing alone among barbarians, among Greeks, everywhere on land, everywhere on sea, remained unconquered.
25:119
And just as a spark, falling upon stubble and grass, transforms whatever it burns into its own nature,
25:120
so this man too, coming upon all men, transferred them all to the truth, sweeping over everything like a winter torrent and overturning every obstacle.
25:121
And just as some athlete, himself wrestling, running, and boxing, or a soldier fighting at the walls, on foot, and at sea,
25:122
他也照樣投入各樣的爭戰,噴吐火焰,使眾人無法近前;
so he engaged in every kind of combat, and breathed fire, and was unapproachable by all;
25:123
with one body taking possession of the whole world, with one tongue turning all men about.
25:124
Not so did the many trumpets fall upon the stones of the city of the Jerichoites and cast them down, as this man's resounding voice threw to the ground the strongholds of the devil and drew his adversaries over to himself.
25:125
And when he had gathered a multitude of captives, he armed these very ones and made them once more his own army, and through them prevailed marvelously.
25:126
大衛只用一塊石子就打倒了歌利亞;
David brought down Goliath with but a single stone;
25:127
but if you examine Paul's achievements, that deed will seem the work of a child, and by as much as a shepherd differs from a general, by so much will you see the difference to be.
25:128
因為這人並非藉著擲石打倒歌利亞,乃是單憑開口說話,就瓦解了魔鬼的整個陣營;
For this man did not bring down Goliath by hurling a stone, but by merely speaking dissolved the whole phalanx of the devil;
25:129
and like a roaring lion, sending forth flame from his tongue, so was he unbearable to all, and everywhere he leaped about continually: he ran upon these, he came upon those, he passed over to these, he darted away to others, advancing swifter than the wind; and as though steering one house, or one ship — the whole world — he drew up those who were sinking, he steadied those who reeled with dizziness, he gave orders to the sailors, sitting at the necks, surveying the prow, tightening the ropes, handling the oar, hoisting the mast, looking toward heaven, being all things himself — sailor and helmsman and prow-officer and sail and ship — and suffering all things, that he might loose the evils of others.
25:130
他甘受船破之難,為要止息全世界的沉船之災;
He submitted to shipwreck, that he might put an end to the shipwreck of the world;
25:131
他一晝一夜在深海裡,為要把人從迷惑的深淵中打撈上來;
he spent a night and a day in the deep, that he might draw men up out of the deep of error;
25:132
他勞苦,為要使勞苦的人得安息;
he was in toil, that he might give rest to those who toiled;
25:133
他忍受鞭打,為要醫治那被魔鬼所擊打的人;
he endured blows, that he might heal those stricken by the devil;
25:134
他被囚在監牢裡,為要領那些坐在監獄與黑暗中的人進入光明;
he spent time in prisons, that he might lead into the light those sitting in prison and in darkness;
25:135
他屢次瀕臨死亡,為要救人脫離兇惡的死亡;
he was in deaths oftentimes, that he might deliver men from grievous deaths;
25:136
他五次受了四十減一的鞭打,為要釋放那些施行這些鞭打之人,脫離魔鬼的鞭撻;
five times he received forty stripes save one, that he might set free from the devil's scourge those very men who inflicted these things;
25:137
他被棍打,為要領人歸在基督的杖與竿之下;
he was beaten with rods, that he might bring men under the rod and staff of Christ;
25:138
他被石頭打,為要救人脫離那無知覺的偶像石頭;
he was stoned, that he might deliver men from senseless stones;
25:139
他身處曠野,為要把人從曠野中救拔出來;
he was in the wilderness, that he might rescue men from the wilderness;
25:140
他在旅途奔波,為要止住那漂泊流離的人,並開通那通往天上的道路;
he was on journeys, that he might halt the wandering and open the road that leads to heaven;
25:141
他在城市中遭遇危險,為要指示人那在上的城;
he was in perils in cities, that he might point men to the city above;
25:142
他忍飢受渴,為要除去那更為兇惡的飢荒;
he was in hunger and thirst, that he might take away the more grievous hunger;
25:143
他赤身露體,為要把基督的袍子穿在那些蒙羞的人身上;
he was in nakedness, that he might clothe those in disgrace with the robe of Christ;
25:144
他受群眾的擁迫,為要領人脫離群魔的圍困;
he was in the pressing of a crowd, that he might lead men away from the encirclement of demons;
25:145
他被火焚燒,為要熄滅魔鬼那火燒的箭;
he was set on fire, that he might quench the fiery darts of the devil;
25:146
through a window he was let down from a wall, that he might send up from below to above those who had been cast to the ground.
25:147
那麼,我們既連保羅所受的苦都不曉得,還要出怨言嗎?還要提說錢財嗎?我們既已看見他萬千次地輕看性命本身,還要提說妻子、城邑與自由嗎?殉道者不過死一次;
Shall we then still murmur, when we do not even know what Paul suffered? Shall we still speak of riches? Shall we still speak of wife and city and freedom, when we have seen him despising life itself ten thousand times over? The martyr dies but once;
25:148
然而那位有福的人,卻以一個身子、一個魂,忍受了如此眾多的危險,就是足以驚擾一個剛硬如金剛石之魂的危險;
but that blessed man, with one body and one soul, endured so many dangers as would have been enough to shake even a soul of adamant;
25:149
眾聖徒在許許多多的身子上所受的一切苦難,他都獨自一人在一個身子上全然擔當了;
and whatever all the saints suffered in so many bodies, all these things he alone bore in one;
25:150
and as though he had entered the world as an arena, and had stripped for the contest against all, so he stood nobly.
25:151
For indeed he knew that it was demons who were boxing against him.
25:152
因此他從最起初就立即顯得光輝奪目;
Wherefore also from the very outset he at once appeared illustrious;
25:153
從起跑線一直到終點,他始終如一;
from the very starting-line and all the way to the end he remained the same;
25:154
nay rather, he even intensified the pursuit as he drew near to the prize.
25:155
And what is truly wonderful is that, though suffering and doing so much, he knew how to be exceedingly modest.
25:156
因為當他不得不敘述自己的成就時,總是迅速地一筆帶過;
For indeed, when he fell into the necessity of recounting his own achievements, he quickly passed over them all;
25:157
and yet he would have filled countless books, had he been willing to unfold each of the things mentioned in detail — had he told of the churches for which he was anxious, of the prisons and the deeds accomplished in them, of the daily circumstances and assaults of the rest.
25:158
所以,我們既曉得這些事,也當學會謙抑自持,永不因財富誇口,也不因今生其他的事物誇口,惟獨因為基督所受的凌辱誇口——而且即便如此,也只在必要之時;
Knowing these things, then, let us also learn to be modest, and never to boast in wealth, nor in the other things of this life, but in the reproaches endured for Christ's sake — and in these too only when necessity arises;
25:159
so that, if there be no pressing need, we should not even make mention of these things, lest we be lifted up, but only of our sins.
25:160
因為這樣,我們就能輕易地脫離罪過,使神向我們施恩,並且承受那將來的生命;
For thus we shall easily be rid of them, and shall have God gracious to us, and shall attain to the life to come;
25:161
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
