'Our mouth is open to you, O Corinthians, our heart is enlarged.'
13:2
'You are not straitened in us, but you are straitened in your own affections.'
13:3
他既已述說自己所受的試煉與患難;
Having recounted concerning his own temptations and afflictions;
13:4
'For in patient endurance,' he says, 'in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in watchings;'
13:5
他既已表明這事乃是極大的美善;
And having shown that the matter is a great good;
13:6
因為他說:「似乎憂愁,卻是常常快樂」;
For he says, 'As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing';
13:7
「似乎貧窮,卻是叫許多人富足」;
'as poor, yet making many rich';
13:8
'as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.'
13:9
因為他說:「似乎受責罰,卻不至喪命」;
For he says, 'As chastened, and not killed';
13:10
他藉這些話,既顯明了神那極大的看顧,也顯明了祂的大能;
and by these things having made manifest both God's great providential care and His power;
13:11
他說:「叫這莫大的能力顯明是出於神,不是出於我們」;
'For that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God,' he says, 'and not from us';
13:12
他又述說了自己的種種爭戰;
and having recounted his own contests;
13:13
因為他說:「身上常帶著耶穌的死」;
For he says, 'Always bearing about the dying of Jesus';
13:14
並且這乃是復活的明證;
and that this is a clear proof of the resurrection;
13:15
'For that the life also of Jesus,' he says, 'may be made manifest in our mortal flesh.'
13:16
以及他所有分於的是何等的事,並所受託付的是甚麼;
and of what things he had become a partaker, and with what he had been entrusted;
13:17
他說:「我們作基督的使者,就好像神藉我們勸你們一般」;
'For we are ambassadors on behalf of Christ,' he says, 'as though God were entreating by us';
13:18
以及他所作的是甚麼職事,就是那不屬於字句、乃屬於靈的職事;
and of what things he is a minister, that it is not of the letter, but of the spirit;
13:19
並且他不僅因此而配受敬重,也因他所受的試煉而配受敬重;
and that he is worthy of reverence not for this alone, but also for his trials;
13:20
他說:「感謝神,常率領我們在基督裡誇勝」;
'For thanks be to God,' he says, 'who always leadeth us in triumph';
13:21
他如今又要責備他們,因為他們對他並不十分親厚;
he is now about also to rebuke them, as being not very well disposed toward him;
13:22
But being about to do so, he does not come to it at once, but having first spoken of the love which he showed toward them, he then also enters upon the discourse concerning these matters.
13:23
For even if he who rebukes should be worthy of reverence from his own right achievements, yet nevertheless, when he displays also the friendship which he has toward those he blames, he makes his word less burdensome.
13:24
For this reason he too, having come forth from his trials and his own sweats and struggles, passes over to the discourse concerning love, and thus lays hold of them.
13:25
What then are the tokens of love? 'Our mouth is open unto you, O Corinthians.'
13:26
這算是甚麼愛的憑據呢?這話究竟是甚麼意思呢?他說:「我們不能忍住不向你們說話,反倒常常願意、切望向你們發言、與你們交談」;
And what sort of sign of love is this? And what indeed does the saying mean at all? He says, 'We cannot endure to keep silence toward you, but we always wish and desire to speak and to converse with you';
13:27
For what the embraces of the hands are upon the body, that is the fellowship of speech upon the soul. And along with this he hints at yet another thing.
13:28
What is this? That we speak all things unto you with boldness, as unto beloved ones, in nothing drawing back or holding aught in reserve.
13:29
For since he is now about to rebuke, he asks pardon, making the very act of rebuking with boldness a proof of his loving them exceedingly.
13:30
而且加上他們的名字,也是深厚情誼、深切關愛與熱切之心的記號;
And the addition of the name too is a mark of much friendship, and affection, and warmth;
13:31
for we are wont continually to turn over on our lips the bare names of those we love.
13:32
'Our heart is enlarged.'
13:33
因為正如那使人溫熱的,總是使物寬廣;
For just as that which warms is wont to widen;
13:34
so also it is the work of love to enlarge.
13:35
For virtue is warm and fervent.
13:36
This it was that opened wide the mouth of Paul, and enlarged his heart.
13:37
'For I love not with the mouth only,' he says, 'but I have also my heart accordant.'
13:38
'For this reason I speak with boldness, with the whole mouth, with the whole mind.'
13:39
For nothing is wider than the heart of Paul, who so vehemently loved all the faithful as one might love a beloved, his love not being divided nor becoming weaker, but remaining whole and entire in each one.
13:40
他對信徒如此,何足為奇呢?就連對不信的人,保羅的心也懷抱著全天下!因此他沒有說「我愛你們」,乃是更有力地說:「我們向你們口是張開的,我們的心是寬宏的」;
And what wonder is it in the case of the faithful, when even in the case of unbelievers the heart of Paul embraced the whole inhabited world? For this reason he said not, 'I love you,' but more emphatically, 'Our mouth is open, our heart is enlarged';
13:41
and not even this simply, but with much room to spare.
13:42
因為被愛的人,是在那愛他之人的心裡滿有自由地往來;
For he who is loved walks about within the heart of him who loves with much freedom;
13:43
wherefore he says, 'Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own affections.'
13:44
你且看這責備,是何等有節制地作出的;
And observe the rebuke, how it is made with forbearance;
13:45
which is a mark of those who love exceedingly.
13:46
他沒有說「你們不愛我們」,乃是說「你們不是用同樣的度量愛我們」;
He said not, 'Ye love us not,' but, 'Ye love us not with the same measure';
13:47
for he wishes not to lay hold of them severely.
13:48
And everywhere one may see how he is enkindled with love for the faithful, picking out the words of each of his epistles.
13:49
因為他對羅馬人說:「我切切地想見你們」;
For to the Romans he says, 'I long to see you';
13:50
又說:「我屢次定意往你們那裡去」;
and, 'Oftentimes I purposed to come unto you';
13:51
and, 'If by any means now at length I may be prospered to come unto you.'
13:52
他對加拉太人說:「我小子啊,我為你們再受生產之苦」;
And to the Galatians he says, 'My little children, of whom I travail in birth again';
13:53
and again to the Ephesians, 'For this cause I bow my knees on your behalf.'
13:54
他又對腓立比人說:「我的盼望、喜樂、可誇的冠冕是甚麼呢?豈不也是你們嗎?」他且說,無論在心裡,或在捆鎖之中,都帶著他們;
And to the Philippians, 'For what is my hope, or joy, or crown of glorying? Are not even ye?' And he said that he bore them about both in his heart and in his bonds;
13:55
他對歌羅西人說:「我願意你們曉得,我為你們……是何等地竭力奮鬥,並為那些沒有與我親自見面的人是何等地竭力,好叫他們的心得安慰」;
And to the Colossians, 'For I would have you know how great a conflict I have on your behalf, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts may be comforted';
13:56
他對帖撒羅尼迦人說:「正如母親乳養顧惜自己的孩子,我們既是這樣切慕你們,就樂意將神的福音給你們,連自己的性命也願意給你們」;
And to the Thessalonians, 'As a nurse cherisheth her own children, so, being affectionately desirous of you, we were well pleased to impart unto you not the Gospel only, but also our own souls';
13:57
他對提摩太說:「記念你的眼淚,叫我滿心快樂」;
And to Timothy, 'Remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy';
13:58
他對提多說:「寫信給……我親愛的兒子」;
And to Titus, 'To my beloved child';
13:59
他對希伯來人也寫了許多這類的話,並且不住地勸勉,說:「還有一點點時候,那要來的就來,並不遲延」;
And to the Hebrews also he writes many other such things, and ceases not to exhort, and to say, 'Yet a very little while, He that cometh shall come, and shall not tarry';
13:60
just as a mother does to children who are fretful.
13:61
So also to them he says, 'Ye are not straitened in us.'
13:62
And he says not only that he loves, but also that he is loved by them, in order that by this too he may the more draw them to himself.
13:63
他確實為他們作見證說:「提多來了,將你們的想念、你們的哀慟、你們的熱心告訴了我們」;
And indeed, bearing this witness to them, he says that 'Titus came reporting to us your longing, your mourning, your zeal';
13:64
他對加拉太人說:「若是能行,你們就是把自己的眼睛剜出來給我,也都情願」;
and to the Galatians, 'If it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me';
13:65
他對帖撒羅尼迦人說:「我們進到你們那裡的情形是怎樣的」;
and to the Thessalonians, 'What manner of entering in we had unto you';
13:66
and to Timothy, 'Remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy.'
13:67
人在眾書信中處處都可見他向門徒作這見證,就是他既愛人,也被人所愛;
And everywhere throughout the Epistles one may find him bearing this witness to his disciples, both that he loved and that he was loved;
13:68
And here also he says, 'If loving you more abundantly, I am loved the less.'
13:69
But this is toward the end; for the present, more vehemently he says, 'Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own affections.'
13:70
'Ye,' he says, 'receive one man, but I a whole city, and so great a people.'
13:71
他沒有說「你們不接納我們」,乃是說「你們是狹窄的」;
And he said not, 'Ye receive us not,' but that 'Ye are straitened';
13:72
hinting at the same thing, but with forbearance, and so as not to lay hold of them severely.
13:73
'Now for a recompense in like kind (I speak as unto children), be ye also enlarged.'
13:74
And yet it is not an equal thing, first to be loved, and then to love in return.
13:75
For even if a man contributes an equal measure, he still falls short by reason of coming second.
13:76
But nevertheless, he says, I make no exact reckoning; even if, having received the beginnings from me, you should but show forth the same measure, I am content and well pleased.
13:77
Then, to show that the matter was actually a debt owed, and that what he had said was free from flattery, he says, 'I speak as to my children.'
13:78
What does 'as to my children' mean? I ask nothing great, if, being a father, I desire to be loved by you.
13:79
And observe his discretion and modesty.
13:80
他在此並不陳明自己為他們所冒的危險、所受的勞苦、以及屢次瀕死的經歷,雖然他有許多可說的;
He does not here set forth the perils he endured for their sake, nor his labors, nor his deaths, though he had much he could say;
13:81
and on this account he claims to be loved: 'Because I became your father,' he says, 'because I am exceedingly inflamed with love for you';
13:82
而這一點恰恰最容易叫被愛的人反感,就是當有人一再向他數說自己所施的恩惠;
which most of all is apt to trouble the one loved, when a person keeps bringing forward his benefactions to him;
13:83
Wherefore Paul does not do this, but says, 'As children, love your father';
13:84
which is rather a matter of nature, and owed to every father.
13:85
接著,為免顯得他說這些是為自己的緣故,他表明他吸引他們來愛他,乃是為了他們的益處;
Then, lest he should seem to say these things for his own sake, he shows that it is for their gain that he draws to himself their love;
13:86
wherefore also he added, 'Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers.'
13:87
Καὶ .
And he did not say, 'Do not mingle with unbelievers,' but rather, laying hold of them as those who were wronging what is right, he says, 'Do not turn yourselves aside.'
13:88
義和不義有什麼相通呢?在此他便作了一個對比,不是把自己的愛與那些敗壞他們之人的愛相比,乃是把他們的高貴與那些人的卑賤相比;
For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? Here, then, he makes a comparison, not of his own love with that of those who were corrupting them, but of their own nobility with the dishonor of those men;
13:89
for thus the discourse became both more dignified and more fitting to him, and drew them the more.
13:90
As if one should say to a child who despises his parents and gives himself over to defiled men, 'What are you doing, my child? You despise your father, and prefer defiled men, laden with countless wickedness? Do you not know how much better and more honorable you are than they?' For thus one would more effectually withdraw him from their company than by admiring the father.
13:91
因為若他說:「你豈不知你父親比他們好得多嗎?」這並不能成就什麼大事;
For if he should say, 'Do you not know how much better your father is than they?' he would accomplish nothing so great;
13:92
but if, leaving the father aside, he should prefer the child himself above them, saying, 'Do you not know who you are, and who they are? Do you not consider your nobility and your freedom, and their dishonor? For what communion have you with those thieves, those adulterers, those cheats?' — then, quickly giving him wings by his own praises, he will bring it about that he is torn away from them.
13:93
因為前一種說法他不會很樂意接受,因為抬舉父親反倒成了對他自己的指責,既顯出他所惹惱的不僅是一位父親,更是這樣一位好父親;
For the former argument he will not very readily accept, because the preferring of the father is a reproach against himself, since he appears to be grieving not merely a father, but such a father;
13:94
but here he will no longer suffer any such thing.
13:95
因為沒有人願意不被稱讚;
For no one would choose not to be praised;
13:96
and by this very means, along with the praises of the hearer, the reproof becomes well-received.
13:97
For the hearer is relaxed, and filled with great high-mindedness, and spits upon their company.
13:98
他可佩服之處還不只在於他如此推進這對比,更在於他還想出了另一件更大更驚人的手法;
And this is not the only admirable thing in him, that he thus advanced the comparison, but that he also devised something else greater and more striking;
13:99
首先,他用發問的方式來推進論述,而發問乃是用於那些明顯且眾所公認的事;
first, advancing the argument by way of question, which belongs to things clear and confessed;
13:100
then, expanding it by the density and multitude of the terms.
13:101
因為他所擺出的不止一個、兩個、三個,而是遠比這更多的詞——用事物的名稱代替人物——並在一面描繪出至高的美德,在另一面描繪出極端的惡;
For not one, two, and three, but many terms beyond these he sets down — the names of the things instead of the persons — and there he sketches the highest virtue, and here the utmost wickedness;
13:102
and he shows the interval between them to be great and boundless, so as not even to need any elaboration.
13:103
For, he says, what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what concord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? (III)
13:104
你可看見他何等赤裸地擺出這些詞,又如何足以叫人回轉?因為他沒有說「違法」,那本是更重的話,也沒有說「屬光的人和屬暗的人」;
Did you see how bare he sets down the terms, and how they suffice him to produce dissuasion? For he did not say 'transgression,' which would have been more, nor did he say 'those of the light and those of the darkness';
13:105
but he sets down the very opposites themselves, the mutually irreconcilable of contraries — light and darkness.
13:106
他也沒有說「屬基督的和屬魔鬼的」,乃是用相隔更遠的稱謂——基督與彼列;
Nor did he say 'those of Christ and those of the devil,' but what stood far more apart — Christ and Belial;
13:107
having called the apostate thus by a Hebrew word.
13:108
Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever? Here now, lest he should seem simply to be running through an accusation of vice and a praise of virtue, he mentions also the persons, indefinitely.
13:109
And he did not say 'communion,' but set down the prizes, saying 'portion.'
13:110
What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God.
13:111
Neither has your King anything in common with him
13:112
(因為基督和彼列有什麼相和呢?)事情也不相同;
(for what concord has Christ with Belial?), nor do the affairs;
13:113
For what communion has light with darkness? Therefore neither ought you to have any.
13:114
And first he sets down the King, and second themselves, by this most of all severing them.
13:115
Then, having said 'the temple of God with idols,' and having declared that 'You are the temple of the living God,'
13:116
he necessarily adds the testimony as well, showing that the matter is not flattery.
13:117
For he that praises, if he does not also furnish proof, seems to flatter.
13:118
What then is the testimony? 'For I will dwell in them,' he says, 'and walk among them.'
13:119
「我要住在殿中,並在他們中間來往」;
'I will dwell in the temples, and walk among them';
13:120
signifying his greater relationship toward them.
13:121
'And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.'
13:122
What is this? he says. You bear God within yourself, and run to those men? God, who has nothing in common with them? And how are these things worthy of pardon? Consider who it is that walks among you, who it is that dwells within.
13:123
所以務要從他們中間出來,與他們分別,不要沾不潔淨的物;
Wherefore, come out from among them, and be separate, and touch not the unclean thing;
13:124
and I will receive you, says the Lord.
13:125
他並沒有說「不要行不潔淨的事」;
And he did not say, 'Do not practice unclean things';
13:126
but, seeking greater strictness, he says, 'Do not even touch them, nor come near.'
13:127
And what is defilement of the flesh? Adultery, fornication, all licentiousness.
13:128
And what of the soul? Unclean thoughts, such as gazing with unchaste eyes, grudges, deceits, and all such things.
13:129
He wishes, then, that they be pure on both sides.
13:130
Did you see how great the prize is? To be delivered from wicked men, to be united to God.
13:131
'And I will be to you a Father, and you shall be to me sons and daughters, says the Lord.'
13:132
Did you see the prophet from of old proclaiming beforehand this present nobility, the regeneration through grace? Having therefore these promises, beloved.
13:133
What promises? To be temples of God, to be sons and daughters, to have Him dwelling within and walking among us, to become His people, to possess God Himself as Father.
13:134
Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit.
13:135
因為這是肉體的污穢;
for this is defilement of the flesh;
13:136
也不要沾染那些玷污心靈的事;
nor from the things that defile the soul;
13:137
And he is not content with this alone, but adds, 'Perfecting holiness in the fear of God.'
13:138
For it is not the mere not-touching of the unclean thing that makes one pure; but we need something else besides in order to become holy — diligence, attentiveness, reverence.
13:139
And well did he say, 'In the fear of God.'
13:140
For it is possible to perfect chastity, not in the fear of God, but through vainglory.
13:141
And along with this he also hints at something else in saying 'in the fear of God' — namely, the manner by which holiness may be accomplished.
13:142
For even though desire is tyrannical, yet, if you fortify against it the fear of God, you have dissolved its madness.
13:143
他在此所說的「聖潔」不僅指貞潔,乃是指脫離一切的罪;
And by 'holiness' here he means not chastity alone, but deliverance from all sin;
13:144
for he is holy who is pure.
13:145
一個人要成為潔淨的,不僅是要脫離淫亂,也要脫離貪婪、嫉妒、狂傲與虛榮;
A man would become clean not only if he were rid of fornication, but also of greed, and envy, and pride, and vainglory;
13:146
尤其是虛榮,這是無論何處都當躲避的,但在施捨的事上更當如此逃避;
and most of all of vainglory, which everywhere we must flee, but far more so in the matter of almsgiving;
13:147
for it would not even be almsgiving, if it has this disease, but rather display and cruelty.
13:148
因為當你所行的不是出於憐憫,而是為了張揚炫耀,這樣的事不但不是施捨,反倒是一種侮辱;
For when you act, not out of mercy, but making a parade of it, such a thing is not only not almsgiving, but is even an outrage;
13:149
for you have made a public example of your brother.
13:150
It is not, then, the giving of money, but the giving with mercy, that is almsgiving.
13:151
既然那些在戲院裡的人也施予,甚至給那些出賣自己身體的少年,以及舞台上的其他人,但這樣的事並不是施捨;
Since those in the theatres also give, even to boys who have prostituted themselves, and to others upon the stage, yet such a thing is not almsgiving;
13:152
and those very men who outrage the bodies of prostituted women also give to them, yet this is not benevolence, but drunken folly.
13:153
To this the vainglorious man is like.
13:154
因為正如那人侮辱娼妓的身體,卻付給她一份作為侮辱代價的酬金;
For just as that man, outraging the body of the harlot, gives her a wage for the outrage;
13:155
so also do you demand a wage from him who receives the
13:156
outrage, both to clothe yourself and him in an evil reputation.
13:157
And along with these things the loss is unspeakable.
13:158
因為正如野獸或狂犬撲向我們,這惡病與這種殘忍無情也照樣奪去我們的善行;
For just as a wild beast, or a raging dog springing upon us, so does this wicked disease, and this inhumanity, snatch away our good things;
13:159
因為這樣的事的確是無情與殘忍;
for such a thing is indeed inhumanity and cruelty;
13:160
or rather, it is even more grievous than this.
13:161
因為殘忍的人不會施給有需要的人;
For the cruel man would not give to him that is in need;
13:162
然而你所行的比他更甚;
but you do more than he;
13:163
you hinder those who wish to give.
13:164
For when you make a parade of your gift, you both pull down the reputation of him who received it, and hold back the one who was about to give, if he be slack of purpose.
13:165
For henceforth he will not give, as to one who has already received and is not so much in need; and often he will even condemn him, if after having received he should come and ask again, and will count him shameless.
13:166
那麼這算是哪一種施捨呢?你竟雙重地羞辱了你自己、那領受的人、以及那頒下命令的主:既因你已有祂觀看你的施捨,卻在祂之外還尋求同作僕人之人的眼目;又因你違背了那由祂所立、禁止這些事的律法。我本想把其餘的事也一一講論,包括禁食與禱告,並指明虛榮在那些事上也如何敗壞它們;
What sort of almsgiving, then, is this, when you put to shame both yourself, and him who received, and Him who gave the command, doubly: both because, having Him for a beholder of your almsgiving, you seek besides Him the eyes of your fellow servants, and because you transgress the law which forbids these things, laid down by Him? I wished to go over the other matters also, both fasting and prayer, and to show how much vainglory corrupts there also;
13:167
but I remembered that I did not finish a certain necessary discourse in the address before this one.
13:168
那段講論是什麼呢?我曾說,在今生的事務上,窮人勝過富人,因為我當時是在論健康與享樂;
And what was the discourse? I was saying that the poor have the advantage over the rich in the affairs of this life, for I was discoursing about health and pleasure;
13:169
and this was clearly shown.
13:170
Come then, let us today show this, that not in the affairs of this life only, but also in things higher than these, they have the advantage.
13:171
For what leads into the kingdom, wealth or poverty? Let us hear the Master of the heavens Himself saying concerning the former, that 'It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven;'
13:172
but concerning the poor, the contrary.
13:173
Εἰ γὰρ .
For 'If you would be perfect, sell your possessions
13:174
and give to the poor, and come, follow Me, and you shall have treasure in heaven.'
13:175
But if you will, let us view what has been said from both sides.
13:176
'Strait and narrow,' He says, 'is the way that leads unto life.'
13:177
那麼誰行走那窄路呢,是生活奢華的人,還是生活貧窮的人?是無牽無掛的人,還是背負萬千重擔的人?是放蕩鬆懈的人,還是謹慎而滿懷憂慮的人?但既然我們可以直接舉出那些人來,又何須用推論呢?拉撒路是窮的,而且極其貧窮;
Who then walks the narrow way, he who lives in luxury, or he who lives in poverty? he who is unencumbered, or he who bears ten thousand burdens? he who is dissolute and slack, or he who is careful and full of anxious thought? But what need is there of reasonings, when we may come to the very persons themselves? Poor was Lazarus, and exceedingly poor;
13:178
而那從躺在他門口的窮人身旁走過的,卻是富足的;
but rich was he who passed him by as he lay at his gate;
13:179
who then entered into the kingdom, and revelled in the bosom of Abraham? and who was scorched, and was not master even of a drop? But, one says, many poor also will perish, and rich men will enjoy those ineffable good things.
13:180
On the contrary, one may see the opposite, few rich, but far more of the poor being saved.
13:181
但你要思想,仔細察驗財富的種種攔阻,以及貧窮的種種不利;
But consider, examining carefully the hindrances of wealth, and the disadvantages of poverty;
13:182
不如說,這些既不屬乎財富,也不屬乎貧窮,乃是各屬乎擁有它們的人;
or rather, they belong neither to wealth nor to poverty, but each to those who possess them;
13:183
but nevertheless, let us see which is the more manageable weapon.
13:184
What disadvantage, then, does poverty seem to have? Falsehood.
13:185
And what does wealth have? Pride, the mother of evils, which made even the devil to be a devil, though he was not such before.
13:186
再者,貪財是萬惡之根;
Again, the love of money is a root of all evils;
13:187
who then stands near this root, the rich man, or the poor? is it not plain that it is the rich? For the more a man wraps about himself, the more he lusts.
13:188
再者,虛榮敗壞了萬千的善行義舉;
Vainglory, again, corrupts ten thousand right achievements;
13:189
but near to this also, again, has the rich man pitched his tent.
13:190
但有人說,窮人的苦難,你豈不算進去麼,他的患難、他的窘迫?然而這對富人也是相同的,甚至對他比對窮人更甚;
But the poor man's afflictions, one says, do you not reckon them, his tribulation, his straitness? But this is common to the rich man too, and to him more than to the poor man;
13:191
so that the things which seem to be the evils of poverty are common to both, but those of wealth belong to him alone.
13:192
But what, one says, when through the lack of necessaries the poor man commits many dreadful deeds? But no poor man, none, commits so many dreadful deeds through want, as the rich do through wrapping more about themselves, and not losing what is within.
13:193
因為窮人對必需之物的渴望,不及富人對多餘之物的渴望;
For the poor man does not so crave necessaries, as the rich man craves superfluities;
13:194
nor again has he such strength to practise wickedness, as this man has power.
13:195
and if he has the power, it is plain that he will do so all the more, and more of it.
13:196
For the poor man does not so dread famine, as the rich man trembles and is choked with anxiety over the loss of his goods, and over not yet having laid hold of the goods of all men.
13:197
所以,當他站在虛榮、驕傲、以及貪財這萬惡之根的近旁時;
When, therefore, he stands near both vainglory and pride and the love of money, the root of all evils;
13:198
他若不彰顯出大量真正的智慧,還能有什麼得救的盼望呢?他又怎能行走那窄路呢?所以,讓我們不要被眾人的意見四處搖動,乃要察驗事實的真相。因為這豈不荒謬麼:在錢財的事上不信託別人,卻把它交託給數目與計算;
what hope of salvation will he have, unless he display much true wisdom, and how will he walk the narrow way? Let us not, therefore, be carried about by the opinions of the many, but let us examine the facts. For how is it not absurd, in the matter of money not to trust to others, but to commit this to number and reckoning;
13:199
這豈不荒謬麼:在錢財的事上不信託別人,卻把它交託給數目與計算;
how is it not absurd, in the matter of money not to trust to others, but to commit this to number and reckoning;
13:200
而在判斷重大之事上,卻讓自己隨隨便便被別人的意見沖走,何況我們對萬事還有一個確準的天平、準繩與規則,就是神聖律法的定斷?因此我勸勉、也懇求你們眾人,把某某人對這些事所以為的好處撇在一邊,一切這些事都要從聖經去查問,並且既已認識了真正的財富,就讓我們追求這財富,好使我們也得著那永遠的美福;
but in the matter of judging concerning weighty affairs, to be swept along at random by the opinions of others, and this when we have an exact balance and standard and rule for all things, the declaration of the divine laws? Wherefore I exhort and beseech you all, that laying aside what seems good to this or that man concerning these things, you inquire concerning all these matters from the Scriptures, and having learned the true riches, let us pursue this, that we may also attain the eternal good things;
13:201
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward man of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honour, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
