'For this cause I write these things while absent, that being present I may not deal severely, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for building up, and not for tearing down.'
30:2
He perceived that he had spoken rather vehemently, and especially toward the end of the Epistle.
30:3
For indeed earlier he had said, 'Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ,
30:4
who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.'
30:5
'But I beseech you, that I may not when present be bold with the confidence wherewith I reckon to be daring against some, who reckon of us as though we walked according to the flesh;'
30:6
and, 'Being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled;'
30:7
and, 'For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should not find you such as I would, and that I should be found by you such as you would not;'
30:8
and again, 'Lest, when I come, my God should humble me among you, and I should mourn many of those who have sinned already, and have not repented of the lasciviousness and uncleanness which they have committed;'
30:9
and after these, 'I have said beforehand, and I foretell, as if present the second time, and now being absent I write, that if I come again, I will not spare;'
30:10
'seeing that you seek a proof of Christ speaking in me.'
30:11
Since, then, he had spoken these things and many others besides—frightening, shaming, reproaching, rebuking, defending himself concerning all—he says:
30:12
'For this cause I write these things while absent, that being present I may not deal severely.'
30:13
'For I wish the severity to lie in the letters, but not in the deeds;'
30:14
'I wish the Epistles to be vehement, that the threatenings may remain and not pass into action.'
30:15
他在這番辯白中再次使他的話語更加可畏,也顯明那將要施行懲罰的不是他自己,乃是神;
Again in this defense he makes his word more fearful, by showing also that it is not he himself who is about to punish, but God;
30:16
for he added, 'According to the authority which the Lord has given me;'
30:17
and again showing that he does not desire to abuse his authority for their punishment.
30:18
For he added, 'Not for tearing down, but for building up.'
30:19
正如我所說的,他此刻確是暗示了這事;
And he did hint at this now, as I said;
30:20
but he left it to them to reckon that, if they should remain uncorrected, this too again is building up—namely, to punish those who are so disposed.
30:21
For indeed so it stands, and he himself knows this, and showed it by his deeds.
30:22
「還有末了的話,弟兄們,你們要喜樂,要作完全人,要受安慰,要意念相同,要和睦相處;
'Finally, brethren, rejoice, be perfected, be comforted, be of the same mind, live in peace;
30:23
and the God of love and peace shall be with you.'
30:24
What is the meaning of, 'Finally, brethren, rejoice'? You have grieved them, frightened them, cast them into agony, made them tremble and be afraid—and how do you bid them rejoice? For this very reason indeed I bid them rejoice.
30:25
'For if your part,' he says, 'should follow upon my part, there will be nothing to hinder the joy.'
30:26
'For all that pertains to me has been done;'
30:27
I was longsuffering, I deferred, I did not cut you off; I exhorted, I counseled, I put you in fear, I threatened, so that from every side I might gather you together unto the fruit of repentance.
30:28
But now it remains that the part which is from you should come to pass.
30:29
And so your joy shall be unfading.
30:30
What means, 'Be perfected'? Become complete, fill up the things that are lacking.
30:31
For since the temptations were many and the dangers great, he says:
30:32
Be comforted both by one another, and by us, and by the change unto that which is better.
30:33
因為若喜樂是從良心而生,你們又被建立為完全,那麼你們的歡愉與安慰便毫無缺欠;
For if joy should arise from a good conscience and you should be established as perfect, nothing is wanting to your cheerfulness and comfort;
30:34
for nothing so produces comfort as a pure conscience, even though countless temptations should encompass one.
30:35
'Be of the same mind, live in peace.'
30:36
In the letter, from the very outset, he had made this request.
30:37
For it is possible both to be of the same mind and yet not to live in peace, when some agree in the doctrines but are at variance with one another in their mutual dealings.
30:38
But Paul demands both.
30:39
'And the God of love and of peace shall be with you.'
30:40
For he does not merely admonish and counsel, but also prays.
30:41
For either he prays for this, or he foretells that which shall be.
30:42
他說:「因為你們若行這些事」——就是說,你們若同心合意、和睦相處,神也必與你們同在;
'For if you do these things,' he says, that is, if you are of the same mind and live in peace, then God also shall be with you;
30:43
for God is of love and of peace, and in these He rejoices, in these He is well pleased.
30:44
由此,那從祂之愛而來的平安也臨到你們;
From this source comes to you also peace, from His love;
30:45
from this source comes the removal of all evils.
30:46
This it was that saved the world; this that dissolved the age-long war; this that mingled earth with heaven; this that made men into angels.
30:47
所以,我們也當愛慕這樣的愛;
Let us, therefore, also love this same love;
30:48
for love is the mother of countless good things.
30:49
Through this we were saved; through this all the unspeakable good things are ours.
30:50
Then, leading them on unto this love, he says:
30:51
'Salute one another with a holy kiss.'
30:52
What means 'holy'? Not treacherous, not guileful, as Judas kissed Christ.
30:53
親嘴之所以被賜下,正是為要作愛的火種,為要點燃內心的情意,使我們如此彼此相愛——如弟兄愛弟兄,如兒女愛父親,如父親愛兒女;
For this reason the kiss is given, that it may be a kindling of love, that it may inflame the disposition, that so we may love one another as brothers love brothers, as children their fathers, as fathers their children;
30:54
不但如此,更是遠遠過之;
nay, rather even far more;
30:55
for the former are of nature, but these are of grace.
30:56
Thus are souls bound together with one another.
30:57
For this reason also, when we return from a journey, we kiss one another, our souls hastening on to communion with each other.
30:58
For this is above all the member which proclaims to us the affection of the soul.
30:59
But concerning this holy kiss there is yet another word to be spoken.
30:60
是怎樣的話呢?我們乃是基督的殿;
What manner of word is this? We are the temple of Christ;
30:61
therefore, when we kiss one another, we kiss the porch and the entrance of the temple.
30:62
Or do you not see how many kiss even the porch of this temple, some stooping down, others holding it with the hand and bringing the hand to their mouth? And through these gates and doors Christ both entered and enters in unto us, whenever we partake of the Communion.
30:63
You who partake of the mysteries know what is being said.
30:64
For not as a common thing has our mouth been honored, in receiving the Lord's body.
30:65
For this reason especially we kiss here.
30:66
願那些口出污穢之言的人聽見這話,那些發出辱罵的人也聽見,並要戰兢,因他們所羞辱的是何等的一張口;
Let those who utter shameful things hear this, those who pour forth revilings, and let them shudder at what a mouth it is they are disgracing;
30:67
願那些以淫穢方式親嘴的人聽見這話;
let those who kiss shamefully hear this;
30:68
hear what oracles God has uttered through your mouth, and keep it unstained.
30:69
He discoursed concerning the life to come, concerning resurrection, concerning immortality, that death is no death, and countless other unspeakable things.
30:70
For just as one who is about to be initiated draws near to the mouth of the priest as to an oracle,
30:71
let us hear how full of awe are all these things.
30:72
For indeed he has lost his life from his forefathers, and he comes to seek it out again, and to ask how he might find it and recover it.
30:73
Then God gives him an oracle as to how it might be found, and this mouth becomes more awful than the mercy-seat.
30:74
因為那施恩座從未發出這樣的聲音,反倒只論及遠為次要的事——論及地上的爭戰與和平;
For that mercy-seat nowhere sent forth such a voice, but discoursed concerning far lesser matters, concerning wars and the peace here below;
30:75
but all these things are concerning heaven, and the life to come, and matters new and surpassing the understanding.
30:76
And having said, 'Salute one another with a holy kiss,' he added:
30:77
'All the saints salute you;'
30:78
and thereby giving them good hopes.
30:79
他寫下這問安,是要代替親嘴,藉著這問候的話把他們聯結起來;
This he wrote in place of a kiss, joining them together by means of the greeting;
30:80
for from the same mouth from which the kiss proceeds, the words also proceed.
30:81
Do you see how he gathers all together, both those far separated in body and those near at hand, the one class by the kiss, the other by the letters? 'The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.'
30:82
Since he had joined them to one another by means of greetings and kisses, he again closes his discourse in prayer, with great exactness joining them also to God.
30:83
'The Holy Spirit is not ranked in the opening salutations of the Epistles'—is He then not of the same essence? For behold, now he has reckoned Him together with the Father and the Son.
30:84
And apart from this, it is possible to say that also—that when writing to the Colossians and saying, 'Grace to you and peace from God our Father,' he was silent concerning the Son, and did not add, as in all the Epistles, 'and the Lord Jesus Christ.'
30:85
Will the Son then, on this account, not be of the same essence? But this is the extreme of folly.
30:86
For this very thing especially shows Him to be of the same essence—namely, that Paul uses this order in varying ways.
30:87
And that what has been said is no mere conjecture, hear how he makes mention of the Son and of the Spirit, and passes over the Father in silence.
30:88
For writing to the Corinthians he says, 'But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.'
30:89
What then, tell me, were these not baptized into the Father? Surely then they were neither washed nor sanctified.
30:90
even as, in fact, they were also baptized.
30:91
那麼他為何不說「你們在父的名裡被洗淨」呢?因為在他看來,這無關緊要——有時題到這一位格,有時題到那一位格;
How then did he not say, 'You were washed in the name of the Father'? Because it is indifferent to him, at one time to make mention of this Person, at another of that;
30:92
and you may find this usage in many places of the Epistles.
30:93
For indeed, writing to the Romans, he says, 'I beseech you therefore by the mercies of God;'
30:94
然而那憐憫也同樣是屬乎子的;
and yet the mercies are also of the Son;
30:95
and, 'I beseech you by the love of the Spirit;'
30:96
and yet the love is also of the Father.
30:97
Why, then, did he make no mention of mercies in connection with the Son, nor of love in connection with the Father? Because he passed over these things in silence as being plain and universally acknowledged.
30:98
And these gifts too will be found again to be set in an interchangeable order.
30:99
For having said, 'The grace of Christ, and the love of God and Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit,' elsewhere he speaks of the communion of the Son and the love of the Spirit.
30:100
'For I beseech you,' he says, 'by the love of the Spirit.'
30:101
And in the Epistle to the Corinthians: 'God is faithful, through whom you were called into the communion of His Son.'
30:102
Thus the properties of the Trinity are undivided.
30:103
凡有聖靈的交通之處,也就顯明有子的交通;
And where the communion of the Spirit is, there it has been found to be also of the Son;
30:104
and where the grace is of the Son, it is also of the Father and of the Holy Spirit.
30:105
'For grace to you,' he says, 'from God the Father.'
30:106
And elsewhere, having enumerated many kinds of it, he added: 'But all these things one and the same Spirit works, dividing to each one severally as He wills.'
30:107
And I say these things not confounding the hypostases—far be it—but knowing both their distinctness and separateness, and the oneness of the essence.
30:108
Let us, then, remain holding fast the exactness of these doctrines, and drawing to ourselves the love of God.
30:109
因為從前我們恨祂的時候,祂就愛了我們;我們作仇敵的時候,祂就使我們與祂和好;
For formerly, when we hated Him, He loved us, and when we were enemies He reconciled us;
30:110
and now that we love Him, He wills to love us.
30:111
Let us, then, remain loving Him, so that we may also be loved by Him.
30:112
For if, when we are loved by powerful men, we are formidable to all, how much more when we are loved by God.
30:113
And whether it be needful to give money, or bodies, or even the very soul for the sake of this love, let us not spare it.
30:114
因為單用言語說我們愛,是不夠的;還必須用行為提出證明;
For it is not enough to say in words that we love; but we must also furnish the demonstration by deeds;
30:115
for neither did He show His love by words alone, but also by deeds.
30:116
所以,你也要藉著行為顯明這愛,並要行祂所看為美善的事;
Do you also, then, show this by works, and do the things that seem good to Him;
30:117
for thus you yourself will again reap the profit.
30:118
因為祂並不需要我們所有的甚麼;
For He has need of nothing that comes from us;
30:119
and this indeed is most of all the mark of genuine love: that One who has no need and is in no want should do all things in order to be loved by us.
30:120
Wherefore Moses also said: 'For what does the Lord your God seek of you, but to love Him, and that you be ready to walk after Him?' So that, when He commands us to love Him, then above all He shows that He loves you.
30:121
For nothing so establishes our salvation as loving Him.
30:122
See, then, how all His commandments tend to our rest and salvation and good repute.
30:123
For when He says, 'Blessed are the merciful, blessed are the pure in heart, blessed are the meek, blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are the peacemakers,' He Himself reaps nothing from this, but adorns us,
30:124
並且是在規範這些事的時候發出祂的吩咐;
and setting these things in order He gives His commands;
30:125
not needing the service that comes from us, but anointing you unto lovingkindness.
30:126
For He was able even without you to feed the poor man; but bestowing on you a very great treasure, He gave these commands.
30:127
因為那太陽,雖是受造之物,尚且不需要我們的眼睛(因為即使無人仰望它,它仍舊保有自己的光輝),而得益處的乃是我們,就是當我們享受它光線的時候;
For if the sun, though it is a created thing, has no need of our eyes (for it remains possessing its own brightness, even though no one looks upon it), while it is we who profit when we enjoy its ray;
30:128
much more does this hold true in the case of God.
30:129
But that you may learn this from another quarter also, listen:
30:130
How great do you suppose the distance is between God and us? Is it as much as between gnats and us, or much more? It is quite plain that it is much more, and indeed infinite.
30:131
If, then, we who are vainglorious have no need of help or glory from gnats, much more does the Divine, being both impassible and in want of nothing.
30:132
He therefore enjoys us only so far as we are benefited, so far as He delights in our salvation.
30:133
For this reason too, in many places, forgoing what is His own, He seeks what is yours.
30:134
'For if any man,' he says, 'has a wife that is an unbeliever, and she is content to dwell with him, let him not put her away.'
30:135
'But whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, makes her to commit adultery.'
30:136
你看見祂那難以言喻的良善麼?祂說:若妻子是淫婦,我並不勉強你與她同住;
Do you see His unspeakable goodness? If the wife be a harlot, He says, I do not compel you to dwell with her;
30:137
again, if you have grieved anyone, I bid you leave My offering and hasten to the one you have grieved.
30:138
'For if you bring your gift,' He says, 'and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.'
30:139
那個把一切都吞吃盡了之人的比喻又如何呢?豈不是表明同一件事麼?因為當他吞吃了那一萬他連得時,主憐憫他,免了他的債;
And what of the parable of him who had devoured all? Does it not indicate this same thing? For when he had devoured the ten thousand talents, He had mercy on him and released him;
30:140
但當他向同作僕人的討那一百得拿利時,主就稱他為惡,並把他交付刑罰;
but when he demanded the hundred denarii of his fellow-servant, He both called him wicked and delivered him over to punishment;
30:141
so great is His concern for your rest.
30:142
The barbarian was about to sin against the wife of the righteous man, and He says, 'I kept you from sinning against Me.'
30:143
Paul was persecuting the apostles, and He says to him:
30:144
'Why do you persecute Me?' Others hunger, and He Himself says that He hungers, and goes about naked and a stranger, wishing to shame you, and by this to bring you into the reckoning of almsgiving.
30:145
Considering, then, the love which through all things He has shown and continues to show, having deigned to make Himself known to us—
30:146
which is the greatest sum of all good things, and the light of the understanding, and the teaching of virtue—
30:147
祂又為我們立定了討祂喜悅的生活法則,並為我們的緣故成就了萬事,賜下了祂的兒子,應許了國度,召我們得那說不出來的美善,又為我們預備了最有福的生命——那麼,讓我們凡事都如此行、如此說,好叫我們既顯為配得祂的愛,又得著那將來的美善;
and having legislated a life pleasing to Him, and having wrought all things for our sake, and having given His Son, and having promised a kingdom, and calling us to unspeakable good things, and having prepared for us a most blessed life, let us do and say all things, so that we may both be shown worthy of His love and attain the good things to come;
30:148
