'Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some do, letters of commendation to you, or from you?'
6:2
別人可能要向他反駁的,就是「你在自高」這話,他自己已預先提出,先發制人;
That which was likely to be objected to him by others—namely, 'You are exalting yourself'—this he himself has set down beforehand, anticipating it;
6:3
然而,他先前既已作過那麼大的糾正,又說過「這些事誰能當得起呢?」以及「我們是憑著真誠說話」;
and yet, though he had used so great a correction before, and had said, 'Who is sufficient for these things?' and, 'We speak out of sincerity';
6:4
nevertheless he is not content with those things.
6:5
For such was his character:
6:6
he stood far removed from seeming to say anything great about himself, and fled from it with great abundance and excess.
6:7
But do you, I pray, consider from this also the abundance of his wisdom.
6:8
That which was gloomy—the afflictions, I mean—he so exalted, and showed to be splendid and illustrious, that this very contrast rose up for him out of what had been said.
6:9
And he does the same thing toward the end also.
6:10
For after enumerating ten thousand perils, insults, straits, necessities, and all such things, he added, saying, 'We commend not ourselves, but give you occasion of glorying.'
6:11
And he sets it down again there vehemently, and with fuller consolation.
6:12
For here the words are those of love—'Do we need, as some do, letters of commendation?'—but there the words spoken are laden with a certain lofty spirit, uttered of necessity and profitably and with indignation.
6:13
'For we do not again,' he says, 'commend ourselves, but give you occasion of glorying.'
6:14
And, 'Do you again think that we are making a defense to you? We speak before God in Christ.'
6:15
'For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should not find you such as I would, and that I should be found by you such as you would not.'
6:16
For lest he should seem to be courting the reputation of flattery, as though longing for the honor that comes from them, he says these things: 'I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should not find you such as I would, and I too be found by you such as you would not.'
6:17
然而這些話乃是帶著許多責備說的;
But these words are spoken with much reproach;
6:18
yet at the beginning it was not so, but more gently.
6:19
But what is it that he says? He had spoken concerning the trials and the perils, and that everywhere he is led in triumph by God in Christ, and that the whole world knows these triumphs.
6:20
Since therefore he had uttered great things concerning himself, he raises an objection against himself, saying:
6:21
'Do we begin again to commend ourselves?' And what he means is this:
6:22
Perhaps someone will object to us, 'What is this, O Paul? Do you say these things concerning yourself, and exalt yourself?' Therefore, resolving this suspicion, he says that 'This is not what we desire—namely, to boast and to exalt ourselves;'
6:23
but we are so far from needing letters of commendation to you, that you yourselves serve us instead of a letter.
6:24
'For you are our epistle,' he says.
6:25
「你們就是」這話是甚麼意思?若我們需要向別人被舉薦,我們就要把你們帶到眾人面前,代替薦信;
What does 'You are' mean? If we needed to be commended to others, we would bring you forward into the midst instead of a letter;
6:26
which also in the former Epistle he was saying:
6:27
'For the seal of my apostleship are you.'
6:28
But here he does not speak so, but with a certain irony, so as to make his word more forceful:
6:29
'Unless we need letters of commendation?' And hinting at the false apostles, he added:
6:30
'As some do, letters of commendation to you, or from you to others.'
6:31
Then, since what had been said was severe, he softens it by adding and saying:
6:32
'You are our epistle, written in our hearts, known by all;'
6:33
'being made manifest that you are an epistle of Christ.'
6:34
Here he testifies to them not only love, but also good deeds, seeing that they are able to display to all men, through their own virtue, the dignity of their teacher.
6:35
For this is the meaning of 'You are our epistle.'
6:36
What letters commending us and making us worthy of respect would have accomplished, this you accomplish, both by being seen and being heard.
6:37
For the virtue of disciples is wont to adorn the teacher and to commend him more than any epistle.
6:38
'Written in our hearts.'
6:39
就是說,一封眾人都知道的書信;
That is, one which all men know;
6:40
我們就是這樣把你們四處帶著,並將你們存在心裡;
so do we carry you about everywhere, and hold you in mind;
6:41
這彷彿他在說:你們就是我們向別人的舉薦;
as if he were saying, You are our commendation to others;
6:42
for indeed we have you continually in our heart, and to all men we proclaim your good deeds.
6:43
所以,並不是因為你們也是我們向別人的舉薦,我們才需要你們的薦信;
Not therefore, because you are our commendation even to others, do we need letters from you;
6:44
並且因為我們極其愛你們,我們也不需要向你們的舉薦;
but also, because we love you exceedingly, we do not need commendation to you;
6:45
因為人惟有向素不相識的人才需要書信;
for it is toward those who are strangers that one needs letters;
6:46
but you are in our mind.
6:47
他也不僅單單說「你們是」,乃說「寫著的」;
And he did not say simply, 'You are,' but 'Written;'
6:48
that is, you cannot even fall away.
6:49
For just as men reading from letters, so, knowing from our heart, all men know our love, which we have toward you.
6:50
If therefore letters exist for this purpose, that they may show that so-and-so is my friend and may enjoy freedom of access, your love suffices to accomplish everything.
6:51
因為我們若往你們那裡去,就不需要別人來舉薦我們,因你們的情誼已在先了;
For whether we go to you, we need no others to commend us, since your friendship goes before us;
6:52
or whether we go to others, again we need no letters, since that same love stands instead of these.
6:53
For we carry the epistle about in our hearts.
6:54
Then, lifting them up to something yet greater, he even calls them an epistle of Christ, saying:
6:55
'Being made manifest that you are an epistle of Christ.'
6:56
And having said this, he thereupon takes an occasion and a starting point from here to examine the things of the Law.
6:57
他在此也是從另一層意義上說他們是書信;
And in another sense too he here says that they are an epistle;
6:58
因為在上文他是說他們是舉薦的憑據;
for higher up he spoke of them as commending;
6:59
but here as an epistle of Christ, as having the law of God written within them.
6:60
For the things which God willed to make manifest to all and to you, these have been written in your hearts.
6:61
And we prepared you, so that you might receive the writing.
6:62
正如摩西鑿刻那些石頭與石版,我們也照樣鑿刻你們的心靈;
Just as Moses carved the stones and the tablets, so we have carved your souls;
6:63
wherefore he says, 'Ministered by us.'
6:64
然而在這一點上,兩者是相等的;
But in this respect they had equality;
6:65
for those tablets too were written by God, and these by the Spirit.
6:66
Where then is the difference? 'Written, not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God;'
6:67
'not on tablets of stone, but on tablets that are hearts of flesh.'
6:68
聖靈與墨、石版與肉版之間相距多遠,這兩者與那兩者的分別也就有多大;
And by as much as the distance is between the Spirit and ink, and a tablet of stone and one of flesh, by so much is the difference between these and those;
6:69
and consequently also between those who ministered these things and him who ministered those to them.
6:70
For this very reason, since he had uttered a great thing, he quickly checks himself, saying:
6:71
'And such confidence we have through Christ toward God;'
6:72
他又把這一切都歸給神;
and again he refers the whole to God;
6:73
'for of these things,' he says, 'Christ is to us the cause.'
6:74
'Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to reckon anything as from ourselves.'
6:75
Behold again yet another correction.
6:76
For indeed he possessed this virtue above all in a surpassing degree—I mean humility.
6:77
所以,每逢他論到自己說了甚麼偉大的話,他總是竭盡全力,用各樣方法極力緩和所說的話;
Wherefore, whenever he says anything great concerning himself, he uses all diligence, so as vehemently to soften what has been said by every means;
6:78
which he does here also, saying, 'Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to reckon anything as from ourselves.'
6:79
就是說:我說「我們有信心」,並不是說有一部分是我們的,有一部分是神的;
That is: I did not so say 'We have confidence' as though part were ours and part God's;
6:80
but I ascribe and reckon the whole to Him.
6:81
'For our sufficiency is of God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new Covenant.'
6:82
What is 'He made sufficient'? He made us able and fit.
6:83
And this is no small thing—to have brought such tablets and epistles to the whole world, far greater than the former ones.
6:84
Not of the letter, but of the spirit.
6:85
What then? Was that Law not spiritual? How then does he say, 'We know that the Law is spiritual'? Spiritual indeed it was, yet it did not furnish the Spirit.
6:86
For Moses did not bring the Spirit, but letters.
6:87
But we have been entrusted to bestow the Spirit.
6:88
Therefore he works this out further, saying:
6:89
'For the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.'
6:90
He says these things not without purpose, but hinting at those who took great pride in Jewish things.
6:91
他在此以「字句」指那律法,就是那懲罰犯過之人的律法;
By 'letter' here he means the Law, which punishes those who transgress;
6:92
but by 'spirit' he means the grace which through baptism gives life to those who were deadened by their sins.
6:93
For having stated the difference arising from the nature of the tablets, he does not dwell upon it, but passing it by, he elaborates rather on that point by which he could most win over his hearer, namely from what is advantageous and light.
6:94
'For it has no toil,' he says, 'and it bestows the greater grace.'
6:95
For if, when discoursing concerning Christ, he especially sets forth those things which belong rather to His loving-kindness than to His worth, and which are bound up with one another,
6:96
how much more, in the matter of the covenant, does he do this of necessity.
6:97
What then does 'the letter kills' mean? He had said, 'on tablets of stone, and on tablets that are hearts of flesh,' but he did not yet seem to be speaking of any great difference.
6:98
So he added that the one was written with letter or ink, but this one with the Spirit.
6:99
Neither did this greatly rouse them.
6:100
So then he goes on to say what was enough to give them wings, namely that the one kills, but the other gives life.
6:101
這是什麼意思呢?在律法之下,凡有罪的就受懲罰;
And what is this? Under the Law, the one who has committed sin is punished;
6:102
但在這裡,凡有罪的前來受洗,就成為義的;
but here, the one who has committed sin comes forward and is baptized, and becomes righteous;
6:103
and having become righteous, he lives, being set free from the death of sin.
6:104
律法若拿住一個殺人的,就把他處死;
If the Law seizes a murderer, it destroys him;
6:105
but grace, if it seizes a murderer, enlightens and gives him life.
6:106
And why do I speak of a murderer? The Law took a man who had gathered sticks on the Sabbath, and stoned him; and
6:107
this is what 'the letter kills' means.
6:108
恩典卻接納無數殺人的和強盜,藉著給他們施洗,使他們脫離從前的惡;
Grace takes countless murderers and robbers, and by baptizing them frees them from their former evils;
6:109
this is what 'the spirit gives life' means.
6:110
那一個把它所捉住的人,從活的變成死的;
The one makes the man it catches dead out of living;
6:111
the other fashions the guilty man living out of dead.
6:112
'For come to me,' he says, 'all you who labor and are heavy laden;'
6:113
and He did not say, 'I will punish you,' but, 'I will give you rest.'
6:114
For in baptism our sins are buried, our former deeds are blotted out, the man is made alive, and, as upon a tablet, all grace is inscribed upon his very heart.
6:115
Consider then how great is the worth of the Spirit, when its tablets are better than the former ones, when it displays something even greater than the resurrection itself.
6:116
因為這死亡比從前那一種更為可怕,就是祂所救人脫離的那一種;其嚴重程度,正如魂比身體更美一樣;
For this deadening was more grievous than the former one, from which He also delivers, and by as much as the soul is better than the body;
6:117
並且這由聖靈所賜的生命,乃是藉著那前一種而得以成立的;
and this life which the Spirit gives is established through that former one;
6:118
但祂若能施予這較大的,就更能施予那較小的;
but if He is able to bestow this greater one, much more the lesser;
6:119
for the former the prophets accomplished, but this one no longer.
6:120
For no one is able to forgive sins, except God alone.
6:121
No, nor did the prophets furnish even that former one apart from the Spirit.
6:122
And this is not the only marvel, that He gives life, but that He also granted others to do this.
6:123
'For receive,' He says, 'the Holy Spirit.'
6:124
為什麼呢?難道離了聖靈就不能嗎?只是神為要顯明這事乃是屬乎那至高的權柄,屬乎那君尊的本質,並且祂也有同樣的能力,就說了這話;
Why? For was it not possible apart from the Spirit? But God, showing that this belongs to the supreme authority and to that royal essence, and that He has the same power, says this also;
6:125
wherefore He also adds, 'Whosoever sins you remit, they are remitted, and whosoever sins you retain, they are retained.'
6:126
因此,祂既已使我們得生,我們就當常存活著,不再回到從前的死亡裡去;
Since then He has made us alive, let us remain living, and not go back again to our former deadness;
6:127
for Christ dies no more.
6:128
'For in that He died, He died unto sin once for all;'
6:129
並且祂不願我們總是單靠恩典得救,不然我們就要成為一無所有的了;
and He does not wish us always to be saved by grace, since then we shall be empty of all things;
6:130
wherefore He wishes that something also be contributed by us.
6:131
Let us then contribute, and let us keep the soul alive.
6:132
And what the life of the soul is, learn from the body.
6:133
因為我們說身體活著,乃是在它步履健全地行走之時;
For we say the body then lives, when it walks with a sound gait;
6:134
but when it lies dissolved by disease, and moves contrary to order, even though it seem to live or to walk, such a life is more grievous than any death.
6:135
And if it utters nothing sound, but the words of the deranged, and sees one thing instead of another, again such a one is more pitiable than the dead.
6:136
魂也是如此,當它毫無健全之處時,即使看似活著,其實已經死了;
So too the soul, when it has nothing sound, even though it seem to live, is dead;
6:137
when it does not see gold as gold, but as something great and precious; when it does not think upon the things to come, but is dragged along the ground; when it does one thing instead of another.
6:138
For whence is it plain that we have a soul? Is it not from its activities? When then it does not perform its own works, has it not died? For instance, when it does not care for virtue, but plunders and transgresses the law, whence can I say that you have a soul? Because you walk? But this belongs even to the irrational beasts.
6:139
But because you eat and drink? But this belongs even to the wild beasts.
6:140
But because you stand upright on two feet? This rather shows me that you are a beast in human form.
6:141
For when you have all else that belongs to a man, but no longer the upward-rising of the soul, you the more disturb and terrify me, and I the more account the thing that appears to be a monster.
6:142
For if I saw a beast speaking with a human voice, I would not on that account say it was a man, but rather on that very account a beast more monstrous than a beast.
6:143
Whence then shall I be able to learn that you have the soul of a man, when you kick like the asses, when you bear malice like the camels, when you bite like the bears, when you plunder like the wolves, when you steal like the foxes, when you are crafty like the serpents, when you are shameless like the dog? Whence shall I be able to learn that you have the soul of a man? Would you have me show you a soul dead and a soul living? Let us bring our discourse back again to those men of old, and, if you please, let us set in the midst the rich man in the story of Lazarus, and we shall know what the deadening of the soul is.
6:144
因為那人也有一個死的魂,這從他所行的就顯明了;
For that man too had a dead soul, and this is plain from what he did;
6:145
τῶν μὲν γὰρ .
for of the works of the soul he did none, but only ate and drank and lived in luxury.
6:146
如今那些沒有憐憫、心腸剛硬的人,也是如此;
Such also are they now who are unmerciful and cruel;
6:147
for these too have a dead soul, just as
6:148
For all its warmth that comes from love toward one's neighbor has been consumed, and it is more dead than a lifeless body.
6:149
但那窮人卻不是這樣;他反倒站在美德的極峰之上,發出光輝;
But the poor man was not such; rather, standing at the very summit of philosophy, he shone forth;
6:150
and wrestling with continual hunger, and not even having a supply of necessary food, not even so did he utter anything blasphemous against God, but bore all things nobly.
6:151
And this is no small work of the soul, but the greatest proof of its vigor and health.
6:152
But when these things are not present, it is plain that it has perished through being deadened.
6:153
Or shall we not call that soul dead, tell me, upon which the devil advances, striking, goading, biting, kicking, while it perceives none of these things, but lies deadened, and when its substance is taken away it feels no pain, but he leaps upon it while it remains motionless, like a body from which the soul has departed, perceiving nothing? For when the fear of God is not present with exactness, that soul must needs be such, and more wretched than the dead. For the soul is not dissolved, like the body, into gore and ashes and dust, but into things more foul than these—into drunkenness and wrath and covetousness, into unnatural lusts and unseasonable desires.
6:154
But if you wish to see its foul stench more exactly, give me a pure soul, and then you will see clearly how noisome this shameful and unclean thing is.
6:155
因為如今你還無法察覺它;
For at present you will not be able to perceive it;
6:156
因為只要我們慣於這惡臭,就感覺不到它;
for so long as we are accustomed to the stench, we do not feel it;
6:157
然而當我們以屬靈的言語得著餵養時,我們才會認識那惡;
but when we are nourished with spiritual words, then we shall come to know that evil;
6:158
and yet to many this seems a matter of indifference.
6:159
而我還未論到地獄;
And I am not yet speaking of hell;
6:160
但你們若願意,我們就查考眼前的事,且不論那行可恥之事的人,乃論那說可恥之言的人——看他是何等可笑,又如何首先羞辱了自己;
but, if you please, let us examine the things of the present, and consider not the man who does shameful deeds, but the man who utters shameful words — how ridiculous he is, and how he first of all disgraces himself;
6:161
just as one who lets forth some filthy mire from his mouth, so does he defile himself.
6:162
因為若那河流如此不潔,就當思想這污泥的泉源是何等的了;
For if the stream is so unclean, consider what the fountain of this mire must be;
6:163
for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
6:164
But I grieve not for this reason alone, but because to some this does not even seem to be among the things that are amiss.
6:165
From this all evils grow, when we both sin and do not even think that we are doing wrong.
6:166
Do you wish, then, to learn how great an evil it is to utter shameful words? Consider those who hear, how they blush at your unseemliness.
6:167
還有什麼比說污穢話的人更卑賤呢?還有什麼更可恥呢?因為這樣的人把自己擠進了戲子與淫婦的行列裡;
For what is more worthless than a man of foul speech? What more dishonorable? For such men thrust themselves into the rank of buffoons and of harlot women;
6:168
or rather, those women blush more than you do.
6:169
How can you teach a woman to be chaste, when by these words you train her to lapse into wantonness? It is better to let forth rottenness from your mouth than a shameful word.
6:170
然而如今,你的口若發臭,你連平常的飲食都不能同享;
Yet as it is, if your mouth smells foul, you do not even partake of the common food;
6:171
但你靈魂裡既有這麼大的臭穢,你竟敢領受聖奧秘(聖餐)嗎?告訴我。若有人拿了不潔的器皿放在你的桌上,你必用棍棒打他趕走他;
but though there is so great a stench in your soul, do you dare to partake of the Mysteries, tell me? And if someone took an unclean vessel and set it upon your table, you would drive him off, beating him with sticks;
6:172
然而當那在自己桌上的乃是神(因為我們的口充滿感恩時,就是祂的桌子),而你竟發出比任何不潔器皿更可憎的話語,告訴我,你豈不以為這是激怒了祂嗎?這怎能不是如此呢?因為再沒有什麼像這些話那樣激怒那位聖潔純淨者了;
yet when it is God who is upon His own table (for our mouth, when filled with thanksgiving, is His table), and you bring forth words more abominable than any unclean vessel, do you not think, tell me, that you provoke Him? And how can this be otherwise? For nothing so angers the Holy and the Pure One as these words;
6:173
再沒有什麼像說並聽這樣的話那樣,使人變得如此放肆、如此無恥的了;
nothing makes men so reckless and shameless as speaking and hearing such things;
6:174
nothing so unstrings the sinews of chastity as the flame kindled by these words.
6:175
神在你口中放置了香膏;
God has placed sweet ointment in your mouth;
6:176
but you lay up words more foul than a corpse, and destroy your very soul, and render it motionless.
6:177
因為當你辱罵時,這並非靈魂的聲音,乃是忿怒的聲音;
For when you revile, this is not the voice of the soul, but of wrath;
6:178
當你說可恥之事時,說話的並非靈魂,乃是放縱;
when you speak shameful things, it is not she who has spoken, but licentiousness;
6:179
當你毀謗時,那是嫉妒;
when you slander, it is envy;
6:180
when you plot against another, it is covetousness.
6:181
For these things are not of her, but of her passions and her diseases.
6:182
所以,正如朽壞並非單純屬於身體,乃屬於死亡以及身體中的病患;
Therefore, just as corruption belongs not simply to the body, but to death and to the affliction that is in the body;
6:183
so likewise these things too belong to the passions that supervene upon her.
6:184
For if you wish to hear the voice of a living soul, hear Paul saying:
6:185
and, Godliness is great gain;
6:186
and, The world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
6:187
Hear Peter saying, Silver and gold have I none;
6:188
but what I have, that I give you;
6:189
hear Job giving thanks and saying, The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away.
6:190
These are the words of a living soul, of one exercising its proper activity.
6:191
『倘若耶和華賜我糧食吃、賜我衣服穿』;
If the Lord will give me bread to eat and a garment to put on;
6:192
so also Joseph: How shall I do this wicked thing, and sin before God? But not so that barbarian woman; rather, as one drunk and raving, so she spoke, saying, Lie with me.
6:193
既然知道這些事,我們就當效法那活的靈魂,逃避那死了的靈魂,好叫我們也得著那將來的生命;
Knowing these things, then, let us emulate the living soul, and flee the deadened one, that we may also attain the life to come;
6:194
which may it be granted us all to share, by the grace and lovingkindness, and so forth.
