'And working together with Him we also entreat you that you receive not the grace of God in vain.'
12:2
'In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.'
12:3
For since he had said that God entreats, 'and we also are ambassadors and beseech, Be reconciled to God,'
12:4
in order that they might not fall back into sloth, he thereupon again puts them in fear,
12:5
and rouses them up, saying, 'We entreat you that you receive not the grace of God in vain.'
12:6
他說,我們不可因為神來勸勉,並差遣了作使者的人,就因此懈怠;
For, he says, let us not therefore be negligent because He entreats and has sent those who should act as ambassadors;
12:7
反倒正因如此,我們更當急切地去討神的喜悅,並積蓄屬靈的貨財(這正是他在前面所說的,「神的愛激勵我們」;
but rather for this very reason let us hasten all the more to please God, and to gather together a spiritual merchandise (which also above he said, that 'the love of God constrains us';
12:8
that is, it afflicts, urges, presses hard), so that you may not, after so great care taken for you, fall back and, having displayed nothing noble, fall away from such great blessings.
12:9
所以,你們不可因為神差遣了勸勉的人,就以為這事會永遠如此;
Do not therefore, because He has sent those who should entreat you, suppose that this will always be so;
12:10
這事只到祂第二次降臨為止,直到那時祂仍勸勉,只要我們還在此地;
until His second coming this will be, until then He entreats, so long as we are here;
12:11
but after this comes judgment and punishment.
12:12
For this reason, he says, 'We are constrained.'
12:13
For not from the greatness of the blessings and the love toward mankind alone, but also from the shortness of the time, does he ever press them.
12:14
因此他在別處也說:「因為我們得救,現今比初信的時候更近了」;
Wherefore also in another place he says, 'For now is our salvation nearer';
12:15
and again, 'The Lord is at hand.'
12:16
But here he does something even more.
12:17
For not merely from the fact that the remaining time is short and small, but also from the fact that this present season alone is suitable for salvation, does he urge them on.
12:18
'For behold,' he says, 'now is the well-accepted time, behold now is the day of salvation.'
12:19
Let us not therefore betray the opportune season, but let us display a zeal worthy of the grace.
12:20
正因如此,我們也急切前進,因為知道時候的短暫與合宜;
For this reason we also press on, knowing both the brevity and the fitness of the time;
12:21
wherefore also he said, 'And working together with Him we also entreat you.'
12:22
For we work together rather with you than with God, on whose behalf we are ambassadors.
12:23
For He has need of nothing, but the whole of the salvation passes over to you.
12:24
但他若也說自己與神同工,這他也並不推辭;
But if he does also say that he works together with God, neither does he decline this;
12:25
for indeed in another place he says, 'For we are God's fellow-workers.'
12:26
他說,神便是以這樣的方式再次拯救世人;
In this way, he says, He saves men once more;
12:27
for He, when He entreats, does not simply entreat, but does so by putting forward these righteous claims:
12:28
就是祂賜下那義者,那不曉得罪的兒子,並使祂替我們這些罪人成為罪,好叫我們成為義;
that He gave His Son, the righteous One, Him who knew no sin, and made Him to be sin on behalf of us sinners, that we might become righteous;
12:29
祂既擁有這些,且是神,就無需去勸勉,何況所勸的還是人,並是冒犯過祂的人,倒是理當每天受人懇求;
which things, being possessed by Him, and being God, He need not even entreat—and that, men, and men who had offended Him—but rather ought to be entreated day by day;
12:30
but we entreat, having no righteous claim of our own to plead, nor any benefit conferred, but this one thing only—that we entreat on behalf of God, and of Him who has shown forth such things.
12:31
And we entreat you that you receive the benefit, and that you thrust not away the free gift.
12:32
Be persuaded therefore by us, and receive not the grace in vain.
12:33
For lest they should suppose that this alone is reconciliation—to have believed in Him who calls—he adds these words, requiring earnestness with respect to their manner of life.
12:34
For to have been delivered from sins and become a friend, and then to wallow again in one's former sins, is to return to enmity, and to receive the grace in vain, as regards the account of one's life.
12:35
因為我們若生活污穢,便不能從這恩典得著甚麼大益處以致得救;
For we gain no great benefit from the grace unto salvation, if we live impurely;
12:36
but rather we are the more grievously harmed, being weighed down by it even in our sins, in that even after such knowledge and gift we have returned to our former evils.
12:37
但這話他還不立刻說出,免得使他的話語顯得嚴厲;
But this he does not yet set down, so as not to make his discourse harsh;
12:38
he only says that we gain no benefit.
12:39
Then he also reminds them of prophecy, pressing them and urging them on to rouse themselves toward laying hold of their own salvation.
12:40
'In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.'
12:41
'Behold, now is the well-accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.'
12:42
What kind of time is this? The time of the free gift, of grace, when it is not required to render account for one's sins nor to pay the penalty, but along with deliverance to enjoy also ten thousand blessings—righteousness, sanctification, and all the rest.
12:43
For how much labour would it have been necessary to undergo, in order to attain this time? Yet behold, though we laboured nothing, it has come, bringing remission of all things past.
12:44
因此他也稱之為悅納的,因為神連那犯了千萬罪過的人也收納了,並非隨意收納,乃是提升他們到至高的尊榮;
Wherefore also he calls it well-accepted, since He received even those who had transgressed in ten thousand ways, and not merely received them, but brought them up to the highest honour;
12:45
just as, when a king comes, it is not a time for the tribunal, but for grace.
12:46
Wherefore also he calls it well-accepted, so long as we are still in the arena, so long as we labour in the vineyard, so long as the eleventh hour yet remains.
12:47
讓我們前來,並顯出美好的生活;
Let us draw near, and let us show forth a good manner of life;
12:48
for he who contends in such a time, in which so great a gift is poured out, in which so great a grace, will easily obtain the prizes.
12:49
因為即使在地上君王的事上,當他們節慶的時候,並當他們以執政官的裝束顯現的時候,連那只獻上微小之物的人也得著大賞賜;
For indeed even in the case of earthly kings, in the time of their festivals, and when they appear in consular array, even he who has offered but a small thing receives great gifts;
12:50
but on the days when they sit in judgment, there is need of much strictness, much scrutiny.
12:51
所以讓我們也在這恩賜的時候中競賽;
Let us then also contend in the time of this gift;
12:52
這是恩典的日子,是神聖恩典的日子;
it is a day of grace, of divine grace;
12:53
wherefore also we shall easily obtain the crowns.
12:54
For if He received and delivered us when we were laden with so many evils,
12:55
當我們已脫離一切,並獻上自己所有的時候,祂豈不更要收納我們麼?接著,他照常把自己擺在中間,吩咐他們從此取為榜樣,這在此處他也照樣行;
when we have been delivered from all things, and are bringing our own contributions, will He not much more receive us? Then, as he ever does, setting himself in the midst and bidding them take from thence the example, this too he does here;
12:56
因此他也接著說:「凡事都不叫人有絆跌的機會,免得我們的職事被人指摘」;
wherefore also he adds, 'Giving no occasion of stumbling in anything, that our ministry be not blamed';
12:57
persuading them not from the time only, but also from those who had lived rightly.
12:58
且看他何等謙和,因為他並沒有說:「你們要留意我們,因為我們是這樣的人」;
And see how free from pride he is; for he did not say, 'Attend to us, because we are such men';
12:59
but for the present, with a view to removing accusation, he recounts the things concerning himself.
12:60
And he sets down two superlatives of a blameless life, saying, 'in nothing, any.'
12:61
他並沒有說「控告」,乃說那遠為輕微的,「絆跌的機會」;
And he did not say 'accusation,' but that which was far less, 'occasion of stumbling';
12:62
giving to no one any ground for condemnation against us.
12:63
'That our ministry be not blamed.'
12:64
That is, that no one may find fault with it.
12:65
And again he did not say, 'That it be not accused,' but, 'That it may not have even the chance occasion for blame, that no one may be able to lay hold of it in any respect whatsoever.'
12:66
'But in everything commending ourselves, as the ministers of God.'
12:67
For it is not the same thing to be free of accusation, and to display such things that from every side one is manifestly a minister of God.
12:68
For it is not the same thing to be acquitted of accusation, and to overflow with praises.
12:69
And he did not say 'appearing,' but 'commending,' that is, proving ourselves by demonstration.
12:70
Then he tells also from where they became such.
12:71
From where then did they become so? 'In much endurance,' he says.
12:72
laying down the foundation of good things.
12:73
Wherefore he did not simply say 'endurance,' but 'much,' and he shows also the greatness of it.
12:74
因為忍受一兩件事,算不得甚麼大事;
For to bear one thing or a second is nothing great;
12:75
but he brings in also the snow-storms of trials, saying, 'In afflictions, in hardships.'
12:76
This is the intensity of affliction, when the evils are inescapable, and when a kind of necessity of dreadful things presses hard, from which there is no way out.
12:77
他所指的,或是饑荒的窘迫,以及其他生活必需之物的匱乏;
He means either the necessities of famine, and of the other necessary things;
12:78
or also simply those of trials.
12:79
'In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults.'
12:80
然而這些事中的每一件,單獨一件就已難以忍受——單是受鞭撻,單是被捆鎖,單是被追趕得無處可以安身;
And yet each one of these by itself was unbearable — even the mere being scourged, and the mere being bound, and the being able nowhere to stand still but driven about;
12:81
因為這就是「在擾亂中」的意思;
for this is what 'in tumults' means;
12:82
but when all things, and all together, come upon one, consider how great a soul it requires.
12:83
Then, along with the things from without, he sets down also the things from himself.
12:84
'In labours, in watchings, in fastings, in purity.'
12:85
By these he hints at the toils which he underwent, going about and working, and the nights in which he taught, or that even in them he laboured.
12:86
And along with all these things, he did not even neglect fasting, although indeed these things sufficed in place of ten thousand fasts.
12:87
By 'purity' here he means either again self-control, or the cleanness in all things, or incorruptibility to bribes, or even the preaching of the Gospel without charge.
12:88
「在知識中」是甚麼意思呢?就是在那從神而來的智慧中,在那真正的知識中;
What is 'in knowledge'? In the wisdom given from God, in the true knowledge;
12:89
not like those who think themselves to be wise, and boast in the education which is from without, but by this very thing are made the poorer.
12:90
'In long-suffering, in kindness.'
12:91
For these too belonged much to a noble soul — to bear all things with long-suffering, though provoked and stung on every side.
12:92
Then, showing from where he became such, he added:
12:93
'For in Him we accomplish all these things,' he says.
12:94
But observe when he sets down the help that comes from the Holy Spirit —
12:95
namely, when he has displayed the things from himself.
12:96
And he seems by this to say also something further.
12:97
What indeed is this? That we are filled with much of the Spirit, and from this also we prove our apostleship — from having been counted worthy of spiritual gifts.
12:98
For even if this is grace, yet he too is a cause of it — he who by right actions and by sweat drew the grace to himself.
12:99
And if one should say that, together with the things spoken, he indicates also this — that even in the spiritual grace he gave no occasion of stumbling — he would not miss the sense.
12:100
因為在他們中間那些領受了說方言恩賜、卻因此自高的人,是受了責備的;
For indeed those among them who had received the tongues, and were puffed up, were blamed;
12:101
for it is possible even for one who has received a spiritual gift to use it not as one ought.
12:102
'But not so we,' he says, 'but also in the Spirit,' that is, even in the spiritual gifts we became blameless.
12:103
This was the cause of all good things; this wrought him into such a man; this also made the Spirit abide with him, through which all things were rightly accomplished for him.
12:104
Which he says in many places, that 'Not corrupting the word of God, nor adulterating it, did we continue.'
12:105
That which he always does — ascribing nothing to himself, but the whole to God, and reckoning even his own right achievements to Him — this also he has done here.
12:106
For since he had uttered great things, and had affirmed that he furnished a blameless life throughout all, and the highest philosophy, he ascribes these things to the Spirit and to God.
12:107
For neither were the things spoken ordinary.
12:108
For if even for one living in quiet it is difficult to act rightly and to be blameless, consider of how great a soul it was for one who was harassed by so many trials, and who shone through all things.
12:109
And yet he did not endure these things alone, but also far more than these, which he sets down next.
12:110
而真正令人希奇的,不是他在這麼多波濤中航行仍無可指摘,也不是他英勇地忍受了一切,乃是他甚至以喜樂忍受了一切;
And the marvel indeed is not that he was blameless while sailing amid so many waves, nor that he endured all things nobly, but that he endured all things even with joy;
12:111
which he makes all plain to us through what follows, saying thus:
12:112
'By the weapons of righteousness on the right hand and on the left.'
12:113
Did you see the firmness of soul, and the vigorous resolve? For he shows that afflictions are weapons which not only do not cast down, but even fortify and make stronger.
12:114
他把那些看似令人愁苦的事稱為「左手的」;
And he calls 'left' the things that seem to be grievous;
12:115
for such indeed are the things that carry the reward.
12:116
For what reason then does he so call them? Either according to the supposition of the many, or because God commanded us to pray not to enter into temptation.
12:117
'Through glory and dishonour, through evil report and good report.'
12:118
What do you say? That you enjoy glory — do you count this to be a great thing? 'Yes,' he says.
12:119
怎麼會這樣呢?因為忍受羞辱固然是大事;
How so? For to bear dishonour is a great thing;
12:120
but does the partaking of glory not require a manly soul? Manly indeed, and exceedingly great, so that one enjoying it may not be thrown headlong.
12:121
因此他在這事上的心志,與在那事上的心志是一樣的;
Wherefore he is of the same mind in this as in that;
12:122
for in both alike he shone.
12:123
然而它怎能成為公義的兵器呢?因為教師受人尊敬,能引領許多人歸向敬虔;
But how does it become a weapon of righteousness? Because the being in honour on the part of the teachers leads many into godliness;
12:124
and this is a proof of good works, and this glorifies God.
12:125
And this too belongs to the resourcefulness of God, the bringing in of the preaching through opposite things.
12:126
Was Paul bound? This too was for the sake of the Gospel.
12:127
'For the things concerning me,' he says, 'have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the Gospel, so that the more part of the brethren, being confident by my bonds, dare more abundantly to speak the word fearlessly.'
12:128
Did he enjoy glory again? This too again made those men more zealous.
12:129
'Through evil report and good report.'
12:130
Οὐ γὰρ.
因為他所英勇承受的,不只是那些臨到身體的事——就是患難,以及他所列舉的一切——也包括那些單單抓住心靈的事;
For he bore nobly not only those things that were in the body — the afflictions, and all that he enumerated — but also the things that fasten upon the soul alone;
12:131
for neither are these wont simply to trouble one.
12:132
At any rate Jeremiah, having borne many trials, grew weary at these, and, when he was reproached, said:
12:133
'I will not prophesy, nor will I name the name of the Lord.'
12:134
And David too in many places bewails reproach.
12:135
And Isaiah too, after many things, exhorts concerning this, saying:
12:136
Do not fear the reproach of men, nor be dismayed at their reviling.
12:137
And Christ likewise says to His disciples, 'When they utter every evil word against you falsely, rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for your reward is great in the heavens.'
12:138
He would not have appointed so great a reward, had not the contest been great.
12:139
因為在受苦刑之中,身體也與魂一同分擔那些痛楚;
For in the midst of torments the body also shares with the soul in its pains;
12:140
for the suffering belongs both to the body and to the soul.
12:141
Many, then, have fallen from these alone, and have destroyed their own souls.
12:142
And to Job the reproaches from his friends seemed more grievous than the worms and the wounds.
12:143
For there is nothing, nothing at all, more unbearable to those in anguish than a word able to bite the soul.
12:144
Wherefore, together with the perils and the toils, he sets down these things also, saying:
12:145
Many, indeed, even of the Jews, on account of the glory of the multitude, were unwilling to believe.
12:146
因為他們所懼怕的,不是恐怕受刑罰,乃是恐怕被趕出會堂;
For they feared, not lest they should be punished, but lest they should be put out of the synagogue;
12:147
wherefore He says, 'How can you believe, receiving glory from one another?' And we might see many who despised all terrors, yet were overcome by love of glory.
12:148
This is the meaning of, 'Through evil report and good report.'
12:149
'As unknown, and yet well known.'
12:150
This is the meaning of, 'Through glory and dishonour.'
12:151
For to some they were well known and much esteemed, while others did not even deign to know them.
12:152
'As dying, and behold, we live.'
12:153
如同定了死罪、被判刑的人;
As men doomed to death and condemned;
12:154
and this he said to show both the unspeakable power of God and their own endurance.
12:155
因為就那些謀害我們之人所行的而論,「我們是死了」,眾人也都這樣看;
For so far as concerns those who plotted against us, 'we died,' and all suppose this too;
12:156
but through God we escaped the perils.
12:157
Then, showing also for what reason God permits these things, he added, 'As chastened, and not killed;'
12:158
showing that a great gain accrued to them from the trials even before the rewards, and that their enemies, against their will, were benefiting them.
12:159
'As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.'
12:160
因為在外人看來,他們以為我們是在愁苦之中;
For by those without we are supposed to be in despondency;
12:161
but we give no heed to them, and possess a pleasure ever at its height.
12:162
And he did not say merely, 'Rejoicing,' but added also the word 'continually.'
12:163
σί
For 'always rejoicing,' he says.
12:164
What, then, could be equal to this life, in which, when so many terrors assail, the joy becomes the greater? 'As poor, yet making many rich.'
12:165
有人說,這裡所說的財富乃是屬靈的;
Some say that the riches spoken of here are the spiritual;
12:166
但我要說,這也包括屬肉身的;
but I would say it is also the fleshly;
12:167
for in this too they were rich, having in a certain new manner all men's houses open to them.
12:168
And this he made plain by what follows, saying:
12:169
'As having nothing, and yet possessing all things.'
12:170
這怎能如此呢?不如說,那相反的情形怎能成立呢?因為那持有許多的人,卻一無所有;
And how can this be? Nay, rather, how can the contrary be? For he who holds fast much has nothing;
12:171
but he who has nothing possesses all things.
12:172
And not here only, but in other cases also the contrary results were produced by contrary means.
12:173
But if you marvel how it is that one who has nothing has all things, let us bring forward this very man, who gave commands to the whole world, and was lord not merely of their possessions, but even of their very eyes.
12:174
'For if it had been possible,' he says, 'you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.'
12:175
他說這些話,是要教導我們不要因眾人的看法而心煩意亂,即使他們稱我們為迷惑人的,即使他們不認識我們,即使他們把我們當作定了罪的、將要死的、憂愁的、貧窮的、一無所有的人,即使他們把那心中歡暢的人看作是愁苦的;
And these things he says to teach us not to be troubled at the opinions of the multitude, though they call us deceivers, though they be ignorant of us, though they count us condemned men, though doomed to die, though sorrowful, though in poverty, though having nothing, though they think those in good cheer to be despondent;
12:176
for neither is the sun visible to the blind, nor is the pleasure of the sober-minded evident to those out of their wits.
12:177
For the faithful alone are upright judges of matters, and they do not rejoice and grieve over the same things as the rest.
12:178
For indeed, if one inexperienced in contests were to behold a boxer with wounds and wearing a crown, he would suppose him to be in pain because of the wounds, not knowing the pleasure that comes from the crown.
12:179
And these people too, since they know what we suffer, but are ignorant of that for which we suffer, naturally suspect only these things, seeing the wrestlings and the perils, but no longer the prizes and the crowns and the object of the contests.
12:180
What, then, were all the things which Paul possessed, when he said, 'As having nothing, and yet possessing all things'? The things of this life, and the things spiritual.
12:181
For he whom the cities received as an angel, for whom they would have plucked out their own eyes and given them, for whom they laid down their own necks—how should this man
12:182
not possess all that was theirs? And if you wish to behold the spiritual things also, you will see him in these too abounding in riches most of all.
12:183
For he who was so much the friend of the King of all as to share in secret things with the Master of the angels, how was he not more abundantly furnished than all, and possessed of all things? Not otherwise would demons have been thus made subject, not otherwise would sufferings and sicknesses have thus fled away.
12:184
所以我們也當這樣:每逢我們為基督受甚麼苦,不僅要慷慨承受,更要歡喜;
Let us also, therefore, whenever we suffer anything for Christ, not only bear it nobly, but also rejoice;
12:185
我們若禁食,就當歡躍如同享受豐筵;
and if we fast, let us leap for joy as though we were faring sumptuously;
12:186
我們若被人辱罵,就當歡欣起舞如同得著稱讚;
and if we are insulted, let us dance as though we were being praised;
12:187
我們若破費,就當心懷如同得利一般;
and if we spend, let us feel disposed as though we were gaining;
12:188
我們若賙濟窮人,就當算作是在得取;
and if we give to the poor, let us reckon that we are receiving;
12:189
for he who does not give in this manner will not even give readily.
12:190
Whenever, then, you wish to scatter abroad, do not look at this alone, that you are spending, but also that you are gaining more, and that even before the spending.
12:191
不僅在賙濟一事上,就是在各樣的美德上,也不要計算那勞苦的辛酸,倒要思念那獎賞的甘甜;
And not only in the case of almsgiving, but in the case of every virtue, reckon not the bitterness of the toils, but the sweetness of the prizes;
12:192
尤其要思念那角力的緣由,就是我們的主耶穌;
and above all, the object of the wrestlings, our Lord Jesus;
12:193
and you will readily set foot upon the contests, and will pass the whole time of your life in pleasure.
12:194
For nothing is so wont to produce pleasure as a good conscience.
12:195
因這緣故,保羅雖然天天遭受捶打,仍是歡喜快樂;
For this reason Paul, though beaten every day, rejoiced and exulted;
12:196
but those of the present day, though they endure nothing of these things even in a dream, grieve and lament, from no other cause than from not having a philosophic mind.
12:197
你倒告訴我,你哀哭究竟是為甚麼?是因你貧窮,缺乏生活所需的麼?那麼,正是為了這緣故你更當哀哭——不是因你哭泣,也不是因你貧窮,乃是因你心志狹小;
For on what account, tell me, is your lamentation? Because you are poor, and lack the necessities of life? On this very account, then, you ought rather to lament—not that you weep, not that you are poor, but that you are faint-hearted;
12:198
not that you have no money, but that you value money at so high a price.
12:199
保羅天天冒死,卻不哭泣,倒是歡喜;
Every day Paul died, and did not weep, but rather rejoiced;
12:200
he battled with continual hunger, and did not grieve, but rather gloried in it.
12:201
而你,只因沒有把一整年的所需都儲存起來,就愁苦捶胸麼?有人說:是的;
But you, because you do not have all the year's provisions laid up, grieve and beat yourself? Yes, one says;
12:202
for he cared only for his own concerns, but I care also for servants, and children, and wife.
12:203
然而他恰恰相反,並非單顧自己的事,乃是顧念普天下的事;
But he, on the contrary, did not care for his own concerns alone, but for those of the whole world;
12:204
and you care for one household, but he for the poor in Jerusalem who were so many, for those in Macedonia, for those everywhere in poverty, for those who gave to them no less than for those who received.
12:205
For his care for the world was twofold: both that they might not lack the necessities, and that they might be rich in spiritual things.
12:206
And your children going hungry do not grieve you as much as the affairs of all the faithful grieved him.
12:207
Why do I speak of the affairs of the faithful? He was not even free from anxiety over the unbelievers, but was so consumed by it that he prayed to become accursed on their behalf.
12:208
But you, though famine should prevail ten thousand times over, would never choose to die for anyone whatsoever.
12:209
你不過為一個妻子憂慮,他卻為普天下所有的教會憂慮;
And you are anxious over a single wife, while he was anxious over all the Churches throughout the whole world.
12:210
'For my anxiety,' he says, 'is for all the Churches.'
12:211
人哪,你要拿自己與保羅相比,這樣的戲言要到幾時呢?你這樣的小信懦弱,難道還不肯止住嗎?我們當哭泣,不是在貧窮之時,乃是在犯罪之時;
How long, then, O man, will you make sport by comparing yourself with Paul, and not cease from this great faint-heartedness? For we ought to weep, not when we are in poverty, but when we sin;
12:212
since as for the rest, it is even a matter for laughter.
12:213
'But this is not the only thing that grieves me,' he says, 'but also that so-and-so is in high position, while I am dishonored and cast aside.'
12:214
And what of that? For the blessed Paul too seemed to the multitude to be dishonored and cast aside.
12:215
'But that man was Paul,' he says.
12:216
Then it is not the nature of the circumstances, but the weakness of your resolve, that produces your despondency.
12:217
所以,你不要為貧窮哀哭,倒要為你自己這般的心境哀哭;
Do not therefore bewail your poverty, but bewail yourself, who are so disposed;
12:218
or rather, do not bewail yourself, but set yourself right; and do not seek riches, but pursue that which makes men more radiant than ten thousand riches — pursue wisdom and virtue.
12:219
因為有了這美德,貧窮便毫無害處;
For when this is present, poverty does no harm;
12:220
but when this is absent, riches are of no benefit.
12:221
For what benefit, tell me, is there in those who are rich in wealth but have poverty-stricken souls? You do not count yourself so wretched as that rich man counted himself, because he did not possess what belonged to all.
12:222
And if he does not weep as you do, unfold his conscience, and you will see the lamentations and the wailings.
12:223
……你的份,好使你不再稱那些擁有錢財的人為有福呢?你可看見這天,何等美麗、何等宏偉、又何等高懸嗎?這美景,那富人所享受的並不比你多,他也不能把你排擠出去,將這一切據為己有;
your lot, so that you may cease deeming blessed those who are rich in wealth? Do you see this heaven, how fair it is, how great, how it is set on high? Of this beauty that man does not enjoy any more than you do, nor could he thrust you aside and make the whole of it his own;
12:224
for just as it came into being for his sake, so also for yours.
12:225
And what of the sun, this bright and far-shining star that gladdens our eyes — is it not set forth in common for all, and do not all enjoy it equally, both rich and poor? And the crown of the stars, and the circle of the moon — are they not granted alike to all? Rather, if one must say something wonderful, we the poor enjoy them more than they do.
12:226
因為那些富人多半沉溺於醉酒,度日於宴樂與沉睡之中,根本感覺不到這些美物,只因他們常閉居屋內、養尊處優於陰蔽之中;
For those men, being for the most part sunk in drunkenness, spending their time in revelries and in deep sleep, do not even perceive these things, being shut up under their roofs and reared in the shade;
12:227
but the poor, most of all men, are those who take delight in these elements.
12:228
And if you examine the air that is poured out everywhere, you will see the poor man enjoying it purer and in greater measure.
12:229
For travelers and farmers take more delight in these things than those in the city; and again, among those in the city, the craftsmen more than those who are drunk the whole day long.
12:230
And what of the earth — is it not set open in common for all? 'No,' he says.
12:231
How do you say this? Tell me.
12:232
Because the rich man, having acquired more acres both in the city, raises up long enclosing walls, and in the fields cuts off many portions for himself.
12:233
那又如何呢?他既圈佔了這些地,難道就獨自享用嗎?絕不然,縱使他千方百計爭競也是枉然;
What then? Because he cuts them off, does he alone enjoy them? By no means, even should he contend ten thousand times over;
12:234
for he is compelled to distribute the fruits among all, and he tills grain and wine and oil for you, and everywhere ministers to you.
12:235
And of the long enclosures and the dwellings, after the unspeakable expense and the toils and the hardships, he prepares the use for you, receiving from you but a little silver in return for so great a service.
12:236
在澡堂裏,以及各處,人都可見同樣的情形;
And in the baths and everywhere one may see the same thing happening;
12:237
the rich being consumed by their wealth and their cares and their toils, while the poor reap all these things in security for a few obols.
12:238
他從這地上所享受的,並不比你多;
And he enjoys no more of the earth than you do;
12:239
for surely he does not fill ten bellies, while you fill only one.
12:240
「可是他所享用的食物更為豐盛講究?」首先,這算不得甚麼大的優勢;
'But he partakes of more costly foods?' In the first place, this is no great advantage;
12:241
nevertheless, even here we shall find you the one who has the more.
12:242
因為這奢華在你看來之所以可羨慕,乃是因為其中有更多的享樂;
For this costliness seems enviable to you because it holds greater pleasure;
12:243
然而這享樂在窮人身上反倒更多,並且不僅是享樂,更兼有健康;
but this pleasure is greater with the poor man — and not pleasure only, but also health;
12:244
and in this alone does the rich man have the advantage, in rendering his body weaker and in gathering more sources of sicknesses.
12:245
For the poor man's affairs are all managed according to nature, but the rich man's, through their excess, end in corruption and infirmity.
12:246
And if you will, let us behold this very thing by way of an example.
12:247
假如需要燒著一座爐子,一個人拋進絲綢衣裳和無數精細的細麻布來燃燒它,另一個人卻拋進橡木與松木;
For if it were needful to kindle a furnace, and the one man were to throw in silken garments and fine linens, many and beyond number, and so kindle it, while the other threw in logs of oak and pine;
12:248
what more did the former have than the latter? Nothing.
12:249
再說(把同一個譬喻換個方式來講也無妨),假如一個人拋進木柴,另一個人卻在底下焚燒屍體,你甘願站在哪一座爐旁呢——是燒木柴的,還是燒屍體的?顯然你要站在燒木柴的那一座旁;
And what of this? (for nothing prevents us from turning the same example another way) if the one were to throw in logs, and the other were to burn bodies beneath, beside which furnace would you gladly stand — that of the logs, or that of the bodies? It is quite plain that you would stand beside that of the logs;
12:250
因為那一座是照著自然之理燃燒,觀看的人也以為悅目;
for that one burns according to nature, and is a pleasant sight to those who behold it;
12:251
but this one, by the reek and the gore and the smoke and the stench of the bones, would drive all men away.
12:252
Did you shudder on hearing it, and loathe the furnace? Such are the bellies of the rich.
12:253
For in these one would find more putrefaction than in that furnace, and foul vapors and unclean discharges, because everywhere and in each part there is much indigestion by reason of surfeit.
12:254
For since the natural heat is not sufficient to work up the whole, but is buried over, those things lie on top smoldering and producing much loathsomeness.
12:255
To what, then, would one compare the bellies of those men? But do not be vexed at the discourse; rather, if I do not speak the truth, refute me.
12:256
To what, then, would one compare them? For what has been said does not suffice
12:257
to show forth their wretchedness.
12:258
那麼,這可比作甚麼呢?正如在陰溝之中,糞土、乾草、殘稈、石塊、泥漿等許多雜物堆積,造成連連的堵塞,於是那污穢之流便從上面漫溢出來;
To what, then, is this? Just as in the drains, where the many refuse-heaps of dung, grass, straw, stones, and mud cause continual blockages, and thereupon the stream of filth overflows from above;
12:259
在這等人的肚腹上,情形也是如此;
so it happens also in the case of the belly of these men;
12:260
for when it is blocked below, from above there gushes up the greater part of these wicked discharges.
12:261
But it is not so with the poor; rather, just as those springs which pour forth pure streams and water gardens and paradises, so also are the bellies of these men clean of such superfluities.
12:262
But not so are those of the rich, or rather of the luxurious; rather they are filled with humors, phlegm, bile, corrupted blood, putrefied discharge, and other things of the like sort.
12:263
Wherefore no one, living continually in luxury, will hold out even for a short time, but will pass his life in unceasing sicknesses.
12:264
Wherefore I would gladly ask them for what purpose foods have been given;
12:265
that we may be corrupted, or that we may be nourished? that we may sicken, or that we may be healthy? that we may be weak, or that we may be strong? It is quite plain that it is for nourishment and health and strength.
12:266
For what purpose, then, do you misuse them to the contrary, fashioning disease and weakness for the body through these? But not so the poor man; rather, he purchases health and vigor and strength through his simple fare.
12:267
所以,你不要因貧窮而哭泣,貧窮乃是健康之母,你倒要歡喜快樂;
Do not, then, weep on account of poverty, the mother of health, but rather rejoice;
12:268
and, if you wish to be rich, despise riches.
12:269
For it is not the having of wealth, but the not needing to have it, that is most of all abundance.
12:270
我們若把這事辦妥,就在今世比一切富人更為富足,在來世也必得著將要來的美福;
If we set this right, both here we shall be more abundant than all the rich, and there we shall attain the good things to come;
12:271
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
