Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: grace be unto you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
1:2
All Paul's epistles are indeed holy, but those which he sent while himself in bonds have something more; such is that to the Ephesians, such that to Philemon, such that to Timothy, such that to the Philippians, and such this present one.
1:3
For this too was sent while he was a prisoner, as he shows when he writes, saying:
1:4
'For which I am also in bonds, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.'
1:5
But this epistle seems to be later than that to the Romans.
1:6
For that one he wrote to the Romans while he had not yet seen them, but this one when he had already beheld them, and was near the close of his preaching.
1:7
For in the epistle to Philemon he says, 'Being such a one as Paul the aged, and also making request on behalf of Onesimus.'
1:8
But in this epistle he sends Onesimus himself, as he says, 'With Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother,' calling him faithful and beloved and a brother.
1:9
Wherefore also he speaks with confidence in this epistle:
1:10
'From the hope of the Gospel, which ye heard, which was preached in all the creation that is under heaven.'
1:11
For the preaching had already lasted some time.
1:12
所以我認為這封信是較晚的,而給提摩太的那封則已臨近他生命的終了;
This epistle then, I think, is later, and the one to Timothy comes near his very end;
1:13
for there he says, 'For I am now ready to be offered.'
1:14
至於給腓立比人的那封,卻是更早的;
That to the Philippians, then, is the earlier;
1:15
for in that one he appears to be at the beginning of his bonds at Rome.
1:16
但我為甚麼說這幾封書信另有一種更深的分量呢?正是為此:他是在被囚中寫這些信的;
But for what reason do I say that these epistles have something more? On this account, that he writes them while in bonds;
1:17
as if some victorious champion, in the very midst of the slaughter and while erecting his trophies, were sending letters.
1:18
因為他自己也知道這是一件大事;
For he too himself knew that this was a great thing;
1:19
for writing to Philemon he says, 'Whom I have begotten in my bonds.'
1:20
And this he said that we might not be vexed at hardships, but might even rejoice.
1:21
腓利門就是在這些人中間的一位;
Here among these people was Philemon;
1:22
for there too, when writing, he says, 'And to Archippus our fellow-soldier;'
1:23
and here he says, 'Say to Archippus.'
1:24
This man seems to me to have been entrusted with some charge of the Church.
1:25
But he had seen neither these, nor the Romans, nor the Hebrews, at the time when he wrote to them.
1:26
And concerning those others he makes it plain in many places; but concerning these, hear him saying, 'And as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;'
1:27
and again, 'For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit.'
1:28
他這樣知道自己的同在,無論在何處都是大事,所以即使不在的時候,也常把自己擺在他們面前;
Thus he knew that his presence was a great thing everywhere, and always sets himself before them, even when absent;
1:29
and when he punishes the fornicator, mark how he sets himself before the tribunal.
1:30
'For I verily,' he says, 'as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged as though I were present;'
1:31
and again, 'I will come to you, and will know not the speech of them that are puffed up, but the power;'
1:32
and again, 'Not only in my presence with you, but much more in my absence.'
1:33
'Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God.'
1:34
It is worth while also to state the subject-matter, which we have found from the epistle.
1:35
What then is it? They were being brought to God through angels, and had many observances, both Jewish and Gentile.
1:36
For this reason also at the very outset he says, 'By.'
1:37
Behold, again he has set down the word 'By.'
1:38
'And Timothy the brother,' he says.
1:39
So then he too was an apostle.
1:40
And it is likely that he too was known to them.
1:41
and this is plain from Laodicea being near.
1:42
'And to the faithful brethren in Christ.'
1:43
Whence, tell me, hast thou become holy? whence art thou called faithful? Is it not because thou wast sanctified through the death of Christ? Is it not because thou believest in Christ? Whence hast thou become a brother? For not by any work, nor by any word, nor by any right achievement of thine didst thou appear faithful.
1:44
Whence wast thou entrusted with so many mysteries, tell me? Was it not for Christ's sake? 'Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father.'
1:45
Whence is grace unto you? whence is peace? 'From God,' he says, 'our Father.'
1:46
And yet in this passage he does not add the name of Christ.
1:47
To those who calumniate the Spirit I will say: whence is God the Father of servants? Who wrought these great things? Who made thee holy? Who made thee faithful? Who made thee a son of God? He that made thee worthy of trust, He also is the cause of thy being entrusted with all things.
1:48
For we are called faithful not merely because we believe, but also because we have been entrusted by God with mysteries which not even the angels knew before us.
1:49
But it was a matter of indifference to Paul so to arrange these things.
1:50
'We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
1:51
It seems to me that he refers everything to the Father, so as not at once to set the doctrine before them.
1:52
'Praying always for you.'
1:53
Not by his thanksgiving only, but also by his unceasing prayer, he shows his love, that even those whom he had not seen he had continually within himself.
1:54
'Having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus.'
1:55
Having above said 'of our Lord,' here he says 'Jesus Christ.'
1:56
他說:「祂就是主」;
'He it is that is Lord,' he says;
1:57
not, the servants of Jesus Christ.
1:58
這些也都是祂恩惠的憑據;
And these too are tokens of His benefaction;
1:59
'For He,' he says, 'shall save His people from their sins.'
1:60
'Having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have toward all the saints.'
1:61
It is Epaphras who brings these tidings.
1:62
But he sends the epistle by Tychicus, keeping the former with himself.
1:63
'And the love,' he says, 'which ye have toward all the saints.'
1:64
'For the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens.'
1:65
'The good things,' he says, 'that are to come.'
1:66
This is said with a view to their trials, that they might not here seek their ease.
1:67
For lest any one should say, And what is the gain of love toward the saints, while they are being cut off? 'We rejoice,' he says, 'because ye are procuring great things for yourselves in the heavens.'
1:68
'For the hope,' he says, 'which is laid up.'
1:69
'Whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth.'
1:70
Here his word is one that smites them, namely that, having had it a long time, they had fallen away.
1:71
'Which you heard before,' he says, 'in the word of the truth of the Gospel.'
1:72
And he bears witness that the word is truth.
1:73
He does not say 'of the preaching,' but he calls it a Gospel, continually reminding them of the benefits of God.
1:74
And having first praised them, in this way he reminds them of these things.
1:75
'Which is come unto you, as it is also in all the world.'
1:76
He said 'is come' in a figurative sense.
1:77
It did not, he says, arrive and then depart, but it remained and is there still.
1:78
Then, since most people are especially confirmed by having many who share their doctrines, for this reason he added, 'As it is also in all the world.'
1:79
Everywhere, he says, it is present; everywhere it prevails; everywhere it stands firm.
1:80
'And it is bringing forth fruit, and growing, as it does also in you.'
1:81
Bringing forth fruit through works, growing by taking in many, by being more and more firmly established.
1:82
For indeed among plants they become thick and abundant precisely when the plant has been firmly rooted.
1:83
He wins over the hearer beforehand with praises, so that he may not fall away even unwillingly.
1:84
The marvel is that you drew near and believed so quickly, and immediately, from the very outset, you displayed the fruits.
1:85
'From the day that you heard, and knew the grace.'
1:86
他說:不是在言語上,也不是在虛謊裡,而是在實在的行為上。這就是他所說「結果子」的意思;
Not in word, he says, nor in deception, but in the very works themselves. This, then, is what he means by 'bringing forth fruit';
1:87
that is, together with the signs and wonders, at the very moment you received them, at that same moment you came to know the grace of God.
1:88
How then is it not grievous that what immediately displayed its own power should now be disbelieved? 'As you also learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow-servant.'
1:89
It is likely that this man had preached there.
1:90
Then, showing the man to be worthy of trust, he says, 'our fellow-servant.'
1:91
'Who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.'
1:92
他說:不要對將來的盼望心存疑惑;
Do not be in doubt, he says, concerning the hope that is to come;
1:93
you see the whole inhabited world turning to conversion.
1:94
And what need is there to speak of what happens among others? The things among yourselves are, even apart from these, trustworthy.
1:95
「因為你們是真真確確地認識了神的恩典」;
'For you knew the grace of God in truth';
1:96
that is, in the works.
1:97
如此,這兩件將來的事就都得了確據:眾人都信了,你們也信了;
So that these two future things are confirmed: both that all believed, and that you also believed;
1:98
and it was not that one set of things happened while Epaphras reported another.
1:99
但為何說「為你們作執事」呢?因他往他那裡去,把你們在聖靈裡的愛心告訴了我們;
But in what sense 'a minister on your behalf'? In that he went away to him, and declared to us, he says, your love in the Spirit;
1:100
that is, the spiritual love.
1:101
But if this man is a minister of Christ, how do you say that access is gained through angels? 'Who also declared to us,' he says, 'your love in the Spirit.'
1:102
因為這愛是希奇而穩固的;
For this love is marvelous and sure;
1:103
whereas the other loves have only the name of love.
1:104
然而有些愛卻並非如此;
But there are some loves that are not such;
1:105
and for that reason it becomes easily dissolved.
1:106
促成友情的緣由有許多;
There are many occasions that produce friendships;
1:107
καὶ .
眼下我們姑且略過那些可恥的緣由;
and for the present let us pass over the shameful ones;
1:108
因為沒有人會為那些辯駁我們,既然它們是邪惡的;
for no one will contradict us concerning those, since they are wicked;
1:109
but, if you will, let us bring forward into the midst the natural and the worldly ones.
1:110
The worldly ones, then, are these:
1:111
例如某人受了恩惠,或從先祖那裡得了一位朋友,或同桌吃飯、同行旅途,或是鄰居;
as when someone received a kindness, or acquired a friend from his forefathers, or shared a table or a journey, or is a neighbor;
1:112
這一類的友情就不純潔;
this kind, then, is not pure;
1:113
for it has in it a certain jealousy and envy.
1:114
出於本性的愛,例如父親對兒子、兒子對父親、弟兄對弟兄、祖父對孫兒、母親對兒女的愛;
The natural loves are such as that of father toward son, of son toward father, of brother toward brother, of a grandfather toward a grandchild, of a mother toward her children;
1:115
你們若願意,我們也加上妻子對丈夫的愛;
and, if you will, let us add also that of a wife toward her husband;
1:116
for indeed all marital loves are worldly and earthly.
1:117
這些愛似乎比前者更為強烈;
These, then, seem to be more vehement than those;
1:118
but they only 'seem' so, I said, because they are often surpassed by the former.
1:119
因為在別的情形中,朋友所顯出的真誠,勝過弟兄之間、也勝過兒子對父親的;
For indeed in other cases friends have shown themselves more genuinely disposed than brothers, and than sons toward their fathers;
1:120
and the one who was begotten did not help, while the one who did not even know him stood by and gave aid.
1:121
然而屬靈的愛高過這一切,如同一位王后管轄自己的臣民,並且有榮美的樣式;
But spiritual love is higher than all these, like some queen ruling over her own, and it has a splendid form;
1:122
for nothing earthly gives it birth, as it does that other love—not habit, not a benefit conferred, not nature, not time—but it comes down from above, from heaven.
1:123
And why do you marvel that it needs no benefit in order to hold together, when it is not even overturned by suffering ill? That this love is greater than that, hear Paul saying:
1:124
'I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren.'
1:125
有哪一位父親曾這樣祈求,情願自己陷入禍患之中呢?他又說:「離世與基督同在,是好得無比的;
What father would ever have prayed this, that he might be among evils? And again: 'To depart and be with Christ is far better;
1:126
but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sakes.'
1:127
What mother would ever have chosen to say these things, so as to overlook her own interests? And again hear him saying:
1:128
'For having been bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart.'
1:129
And here the father, when he was affronted, dissolved the friendship; but there it was no longer so—rather, he went off to those who were stoning him in order to do them good.
1:130
For nothing, nothing is so strong as the bond of the Spirit.
1:131
那因受了恩惠而成為朋友的,若這恩惠不持續不斷,就要成為仇敵;
For he who became a friend on account of receiving a kindness, unless this continues perpetually, will become an enemy;
1:132
he who was inseparable through habit, again, once the habit is broken off, has quenched the friendship.
1:133
妻子呢,若起了爭吵,就撇棄丈夫,斷了那愛慕之情;
The wife again, if a quarrel arises, forsook her husband and dissolved her longing;
1:134
the son, if he sees his father living to a great age, is even burdened by it.
1:135
但在屬靈的事上,這些情形一樣也沒有;
But in the case of the Spirit there is none of these things;
1:136
for by none of these is it dissolved, since it does not even arise from them.
1:137
neither time, nor length of journey, nor suffering ill, nor being ill spoken of, nor anger, nor insult, nor anything else comes in to break it, nor is able to dissolve it.
1:138
And that you may learn this: Moses was being stoned, and yet he interceded on their behalf.
1:139
有哪一位父親會為那用石頭打他的人如此行,而不反倒把他也用石頭打死呢?那麼,讓我們追求這些出於聖靈的友情;
What father would have done this on behalf of the one stoning him, rather than himself have stoned him too? Let us then pursue these friendships that spring from the Spirit;
1:140
for they are strong and hard to dissolve.
1:141
For there too we are forbidden to bring in such motives.
1:142
For hear Christ speaking in the Gospel:
1:143
'When you make a feast, do not call your friends, nor your neighbors, but the lame and the maimed.'
1:144
For great is the reward laid up for these things.
1:145
But you cannot, you say, nor can you endure to feast alongside the lame and the blind, but you count this a heavy and burdensome thing, and you decline? To be sure, it ought not so to be; yet even so there is no compulsion.
1:146
Even if you do not have them sit down at table with you, send them the food from your table.
1:147
因為那請自己朋友的人,並沒有做什麼大事;
For the one who calls his friends has done nothing great;
1:148
for he has already received his reward here.
1:149
But the one who calls the maimed and the poor has God as his debtor.
1:150
所以,當我們在今生沒有得著賞賜時,不要煩惱;倒是當我們在今生就得著時,才當憂心;
Let us not, then, be vexed when we do not receive our reward here, but rather when we do receive it here;
1:151
for there we shall no longer receive it.
1:152
同樣,若人已經償還,神就不再償還;
Likewise, if a man repays, God does not repay;
1:153
but if this man does not repay, then God will repay.
1:154
因此,我們不要專求施惠於那些能報答我們的人,也不要懷著這樣的指望去施惠於他們;
Let us not, therefore, seek to do good to those who are able to repay us, nor let us do good to them upon such hopes;
1:155
你若請你的朋友,那份情誼只維持到傍晚;
If you invite your friend, the favor lasts only until the evening;
1:156
for this reason friendship is spent more quickly than the money laid out, or than the occasions themselves.
1:157
但你若請那貧窮的與殘廢的,那份恩情就永不消滅;
But if you invite the poor man and the maimed, the favor will never perish;
1:158
for you have as your debtor the One who always remembers and never forgets—God.
1:159
And how great a folly is it, tell me, not to be able to sit down with the poor? What do you say? 'He is unclean,' you say, 'and filthy.'
1:160
Then wash him, and bring him up to your table.
1:161
But has he filthy garments? Then change them, and give him a clean robe.
1:162
你豈不見這益處何等之大?基督藉著他來到你這裡,你卻為這事斤斤計較?你請那君王赴你的席,卻為這些事而畏縮嗎?且擺設兩張筵席:一張由這些人坐滿——瞎眼的、瘸腿的、手殘的、腿廢的、赤腳的,只穿一件小褂,而那褂子還是破舊磨損的;
Do you not see how great the gain? Christ comes to you through him, and do you haggle over this? When you invite the King to your table, do you fear expense for such things? Let two tables be set: let the one be filled from these—the blind, the lame, the crippled in hand, the maimed in leg, the barefoot, clad in a single little tunic, and that one worn threadbare;
1:163
but let the other have potentates, generals, provincial governors, great rulers, clad in costly garments and fine linen, girded with golden belts.
1:164
再者,在這窮人的席上,既沒有銀器,也沒有許多酒,只有足夠、且能使人歡暢的;
Again, here at the table of the poor let there be neither silver nor much wine, but only what suffices and is able to gladden;
1:165
杯盞與其餘的器皿,都單用玻璃製成;
and let the cups and the rest of the vessels be made of glass alone;
1:166
但在那裡,在富人的席上,讓一切器皿都是銀的與金的,連那半圓的臥榻也不許一個人搬動,而要兩個少年人勉強才挪得動;
but there, at the table of the rich, let all the vessels be of silver and gold, and let not one man carry the semicircular couch, but let two young men scarcely move it;
1:167
又有一個鍍金的碗,重達半他連得,兩個少年人勉強才抬得起;酒罈一排排陳列,其金光比銀器璀璨得多;
and let there be a gilded bowl weighing half a talent, so that two young men can scarcely lift it, and let the wine-jars stand in a row, gleaming with gold far more splendidly than silver;
1:168
and let the semicircular couch be spread on every side with a soft coverlet.
1:169
再者,在這裡讓有許多僕役,所穿的衣裳不亞於那些斜倚赴席的賓客,衣飾華麗,穿著長褲,容貌俊美,正當青春年華,精力充沛、體格健美;
Again, here let there be many attendants, arrayed in garments no less finely than the guests who recline, splendidly clad, wearing trousers, fair to look upon, in the very flower of their age, vigorous and well-formed;
1:170
但在那裡,只讓有兩個僕役,已將這一切虛華踐踏在腳下;
but there let there be only two attendants, who have trodden underfoot all this vanity;
1:171
and for the one company let the food be costly, but for the other only so much as will quench hunger and fill them with cheer.
1:172
我如今說得夠了嗎?這兩張筵席都佈置得精確了嗎?還缺什麼嗎?就我而言,我想並不缺;
Have I now spoken sufficiently? Are both tables prepared with precision? Is anything wanting? For my part I think not;
1:173
for I have gone over the guests, and the sumptuousness both of the vessels and of the coverlets and of the viands.
1:174
But even so, if we have left anything out, we shall find it as we carry the discourse further.
1:175
Come then, since each table has fittingly received its proper arrangement, let us see where you will take your place.
1:176
至於我,我要去到那瞎眼的、瘸腿的那一席;
For I, for my part, will go off to that table of the blind, of the lame;
1:177
but most of you perhaps will choose this one, that of the generals, the bright and splendid one.
1:178
那麼,讓我們來看看哪一席充滿更多的快樂;
Let us see, then, which is fuller of pleasure;
1:179
因為我們暫且還不查考那將來的事;
for let us not yet examine the things to come;
1:180
for in those things this table of mine prevails.
1:181
為什麼?因為這一席有基督斜倚在席,而那一席有的卻是人;
Why? Because this one has Christ reclining at it, but that one has men;
1:182
this one has the Master, that one the servants.
1:183
But not yet let us speak of these things; rather let us see which has the greater pleasure in the present.
1:184
就這方面而論,我們這一席的快樂乃是更大的;
And in this respect, then, this pleasure of ours is the greater;
1:185
for to recline with a king brings greater pleasure than to recline with the household slaves.
1:186
But let us set even this aside, and examine the matter itself in and of itself.
1:187
那麼,我和那些與我同揀選這一席的人,必要懷著極大的自由與心中的歡暢,暢所欲言,也暢聽一切;
Well then, I and those who have chosen this table with me will, with much freedom and gladness of heart, both say everything and hear it;
1:188
but you, trembling and afraid, and abashed before those who recline with you, will not even dare to stretch out your hand—as though you had entered a schoolmaster's court and not a banquet—trembling as before dread masters.
1:189
But the honor, you say, is great.
1:190
然而我卻享有更大的尊榮;
And yet I am in greater honor;
1:191
for your cheapness appears the greater, when, though you share the same table, you put forward the words of slaves.
1:192
For the slave then most of all appears a slave, when he is reclining together with his master.
1:193
因為他到了本不宜他去的地方,從這親近所得的,與其說是尊嚴,不如說是卑辱;
For he comes to be where it does not befit him to be, gaining from the association not so much dignity as humiliation;
1:194
for then he is exceedingly humbled.
1:195
人可以看見僕人就其自身而言是光彩的,窮人就其自身而言也是光彩的,惟獨不在他與富人同行的時候;
And one may see the slave as splendid in himself, and the poor man as splendid in himself, not when he walks together with the rich;
1:196
for the lowly, when it is near the lofty, then appears lowly, and the juxtaposition shows the lowly to be yet lowlier, not loftier.
1:197
So too does reclining with those men show you to be the cheaper, but not us.
1:198
In these two respects, then, we have the advantage—in freedom and in honor—and nothing is equal to these as a measure of pleasure.
1:199
For I, for one, would rather partake of bread with freedom than of ten thousand dainties with servitude.
1:200
For 'better,' it says, 'is a meal of herbs with friendship and favor, than a fatted ox from the stall with enmity.'
1:201
For whatever those men may say, the guests present must needs either praise it or give offense, having taken on the role of parasites—or rather, being worse than these.
1:202
因為對那些食客而言,縱使伴隨羞恥與被辱罵,畢竟還有幾分坦率直言的餘地;
For to those men, even if it be with shame and with being insulted, there yet belongs some measure of frankness;
1:203
但你們這邊的卑賤就是這般;
But such is the cheapness on your side;
1:204
for you are afraid and cowering.
1:205
That table, therefore, is bereft of all pleasure, but this one is full of all gladness of heart.
1:206
But let us examine also the very nature of the viands themselves.
1:207
For there one must, even against his will, burst himself with the abundance of wine, whereas here it is not possible to eat and drink against one's will.
1:208
So that there the pleasure arising from the quality of the food is taken away both by the dishonor that goes before it and by the disgust that comes from surfeit.
1:209
因為飽脹之損害折磨我們的身體,不亞於飢餓,反倒厲害得多;
For surfeit no less than famine destroys and pains our bodies, but rather much more grievously;
1:210
and whomever you may choose to give me, I would more easily burst him with surfeit than with famine.
1:211
因為這一樣實在比那一樣更容易忍受;
For truly this is more bearable than that;
1:212
因為一個人或許能忍受飢餓甚至二十天,但飽足連兩天也忍受不了;
for a man might endure hunger even for twenty days, but fullness he could not endure for so much as two;
1:213
那些在田間的人,不斷與飢餓搏鬥,卻健康無恙,也不需要醫生;
and those in the fields, continually wrestling with hunger, are in health and have no need of physicians;
1:214
但這一樣——我是說飽足——他們若不時常延請醫生便無法承受;
but this—I mean fullness—they could not endure without continually summoning physicians;
1:215
or rather, the tyranny of this fullness has often put even the help of those physicians to shame.
1:216
And so, as regards pleasure too, this table holds the first place.
1:217
For if honour is sweeter than dishonour, and to be in authority than to be in subjection, and to be confident than to tremble and be afraid, and to enjoy what suffices rather than beyond
1:218
measure to be plunged into the surging sea of luxury, then this table is better than that even for the sake of pleasure.
1:219
至於花費方面,這一樣也更好;
And in respect of expense too, this is the better;
1:220
for that one is costly, but this one is not.
1:221
But what then? Is this table sweeter only to those who recline at it, or does it bring more pleasure than the other to him who gives the invitation as well? For this is what we are the more inquiring into.
1:222
那邀請那些人的,要在數日之前就作準備,不得不承受麻煩、憂慮與掛心,夜間不能安睡,白日也不得休息;
Now he who invites those others makes preparation many days beforehand, and is compelled to have troubles and cares and anxieties, neither sleeping by night nor resting by day;
1:223
but forming many schemes within himself, conferring with cooks, with confectioners, with those who lay the table.
1:224
Then, when the very day is come, one might see him more fearful than those about to box, lest anything should turn out contrary to expectation, lest he be smitten by envy, lest he thence gain many accusers.
1:225
But this other man is delivered from all this care and trouble, providing his table on the spur of the moment, and taking no anxious thought many days beforehand.
1:226
此外,經過這一切之後,前者立刻就失去了他的賞賜;
And moreover, after all this, the one straightway loses his reward;
1:227
but the other has God as his debtor, and is nourished by good hopes, feasting every day upon that table.
1:228
For the victuals are consumed, but the grace is not consumed; rather, day by day he rejoices and is gladdened more than those who have gorged themselves with much wine.
1:229
For nothing so nourishes the soul as a good hope and the expectation of good things.
1:230
But let us now behold what follows.
1:231
在那裡有笛子、豎琴和簫管,在這裡卻沒有一絲不和諧的曲調;
There are flutes and lyres and pipes, but here no discordant strain;
1:232
but what? Hymns, psalmody.
1:233
There the demons are hymned, but here the God who is Lord of all.
1:234
Do you see how full of grace this one is, and how full of thanklessness and insensibility that one is? For tell me:
1:235
God has fed you from His good things, and while you ought to give thanks to Him after being fed, do you instead bring in the demons? For the songs sung to the harps are nothing else but songs of demons.
1:236
When you ought to say, 「Blessed art Thou, O Lord, for Thou hast fed me from Thy good things,」 do you, like some worthless dog, not even remember, but bring in the demons? Nay rather, dogs, whether they have received or not, fawn upon their own masters, but you do not even this.
1:237
The dog, even when it receives nothing, fawns upon its master, but you, even when you have received, bark against Him.
1:238
再者,狗兒縱使受了外人的善待,也不因此就消除對他的敵意,也不肯被引向友誼;
Again, the dog, even when it is well treated by a stranger, does not on that account lay aside its enmity towards him, nor let itself be drawn to friendship;
1:239
你卻雖然在眾鬼魔手中受盡萬般的苦害,仍把牠們引來赴你的宴席;
but you, though you suffer ten thousand evils at the hands of the demons, bring them in to your feasting;
1:240
so that you are doubly worse than the dog.
1:241
And I have well been reminded of dogs now, in speaking against those who give thanks only when they fare well.
1:242
我懇求你們,在狗兒面前當覺羞愧,牠們縱使飢餓,尚且向主人搖尾親近;
Be ashamed, I beseech you, before the dogs, which even when famished fawn upon their masters;
1:243
but you, if you hear that a demon has healed someone, straightway forsake the Lord, O you who are more irrational than the dogs.
1:244
But the harlots, one says, afford pleasure when they are looked upon.
1:245
甚麼樣的快樂呢?除了羞辱之外,還能是甚麼?你的家已經變成了淫窟,成了瘋狂與癲亂;
What kind of pleasure? And what kind of thing but dishonour? Your house has become a brothel, a madness and a frenzy;
1:246
and are you not ashamed to call these things pleasure? Now, if it be lawful to indulge in every pleasure, the shame is greater and the disgust that comes of it.
1:247
何以見得?把自己的家變作淫窟,並像豬在污泥中打滾一樣取樂,並非難事。但若僅止於觀看,看哪,這又是更大的痛苦;
How so? It is no hard thing to make one's house a brothel and to take pleasure like swine wallowing in mire. But if it goes only so far as looking, behold again a greater anguish;
1:248
for the sight is not pleasure when there is no gratifying of it, but rather the desire is greater and the flame more vehement.
1:249
但你願意知道結局麼?前一種人從筵席上起身時,就像瘋子和精神錯亂的人——蠻橫、暴躁,連在僕役面前也可笑;
But would you learn the end? The one sort rise from the table resembling madmen and those distraught—insolent, wrathful, laughable even to their slaves;
1:250
and the servants withdraw sober, but these masters drunken.
1:251
But there is nothing of the sort in the other case; rather, having sealed the table with thanksgiving, they thus withdraw home, taking pleasure when they sleep, taking pleasure when they rise, delivered from all shame and accusation.
1:252
If you would also see the very guests who were invited, you will see these to be of such a kind:
1:253
inwardly, what those others are outwardly—blind, maimed.
1:254
而這些人身體如何,那些人的靈魂也照樣如何,被水腫與炎症所轄制;
And such as are the bodies of these, such are the souls of those, held fast by dropsy and inflammation;
1:255
因為奢華之後隨之而來的便是殘廢;
for after luxury comes maiming;
1:256
for such is fullness and drunkenness, making men lame and crippled.
1:257
And you will see these too having souls such as the bodies of those—splendid, adorned.
1:258
For those who live in thanksgiving, who seek nothing beyond a sufficiency, who thus pursue the love of wisdom, are in all cheerfulness.
1:259
But let us behold the end here also, and there.
1:260
在那裡有放蕩的享樂、放縱的訕笑、醉酒、輕薄的玩笑、污穢的言語;
There is licentious pleasure, unrestrained laughter, drunkenness, buffoonery, foul language;
1:261
for since they themselves are ashamed to utter shameful things, this is done through the harlots.
1:262
But here is loving-kindness, gentleness.
1:263
如今在那邀請別人的旁邊,站著虛榮,武裝著他;
Now beside him who invites those others stands vainglory, arming him;
1:264
but beside him who does this here stand loving-kindness and gentleness.
1:265
For loving-kindness sets that table in order, but vainglory and cruelty set this one, out of injustice and covetousness.
1:266
那一樣的結局,正如我所說,是狂亂、失魂、瘋癲;
And that ends, as I said, in delirium, in ecstasy, in madness;
1:267
因為這正是虛榮所結的果子;
for such is the offshoot of vainglory;
1:268
but this ends in thanksgiving and the glory of God.
1:269
並且從人而來的稱讚,也以這一樣為多;
And the praise, too, that comes from men is greater for this;
1:270
for that man they even envy, but this man all have as a common father, even those who have not been benefited.
1:271
正如在那些受了冤屈的人的事上,連那些未曾受屈的人也一同傷痛,眾人都成了共同的仇敵;
And just as, in the case of those who have been wronged, even they who have suffered no wrong grieve together, and all become common enemies;
1:272
so too, in the case of those who are well treated, even they who have not been benefited, just like those who have, praise and admire the doer.
1:273
And there is much envy, but here much affectionate care, many prayers from all.
1:274
而在那裡,當基督降臨時,這人必坦然無懼地站立,並在全世界面前得聽:「你見我餓了,就給我吃;
And there, when Christ comes, this man will stand with much boldness, and will be heard before the whole world: 「Thou sawest Me hungry, and didst feed Me;
1:275
我作客旅,你留我住,」以及一切這樣的話;
a stranger, and didst take Me in,」 and all such things;
1:276
but that man will hear the contrary: 「Thou wicked and slothful servant;」
1:277
and again, 「Woe to them that live delicately upon their couches, and that sleep upon beds of ivory, who drink the strained wine and anoint themselves with the choicest ointments, who reckoned these things as abiding and not as fleeting.」
1:278
These things have not been said by us idly, but so as to change your mind, and that you may do nothing unprofitable.
1:279
What then, one says, if I do both these things and those? This is a saying common with all.
1:280
And what necessity is there, tell me, when it is possible to do all things usefully, to make a division, and some things to spend not merely on no need but even at random, and others usefully? Tell me, if in sowing you cast some seed upon the rock, and some upon the best ground, would this content you, and would you say:
1:281
For what harm is done if we cast some seed at random and some upon the best soil? Why not cast it all upon the best soil? Why do you diminish the gain? Now if money had to be gathered, you would not talk like this, but would gather it from every quarter; yet there you gather no longer.
1:282
And if he had to lend, he would not say such a thing.
1:283
Why shall we give part to the poor and part to the rich, instead of giving it all to the poor?
1:284
But here, where the gain is so great, why do you not reckon this up and cease at last from squandering at random and spending in vain? Yet this too brings gain, someone says.
1:285
What kind, tell me? It increases friendships.
1:286
Nothing is colder than men who become friends from such things — from the table and from the gluttony of parasites.
1:287
Nothing is more distasteful than a friendship that takes its beginning from this.
1:288
Do not insult so wonderful a thing as love, nor say that this is its root.
1:289
It is as if, when a tree bore gold and precious stones, someone should say that its root was not such, but was born of rottenness.
1:290
For even if a friendship be born from this source, nothing could be colder than it.
1:291
But those tables (of charity) make friendship — not with men, but with God — and an intense friendship, when they themselves are performed with intensity.
1:292
For he who spends part here and part yonder, even if he give much, has done nothing great.
1:293
But he who spends all here, even if he have given but little, does the greater thing.
1:294
For what is sought is not to give much or little, but to give not less than one's own ability.
1:295
Let us call to mind him who had the five talents, and him who had the two.
1:296
Let us call to mind the woman who cast in the two mites.
1:297
Let us call to mind the widow in the days of Elijah.
1:298
That woman who cast in the two mites did not say:
1:299
'What harm is it if I keep one mite for myself and give the other?' But she gave her whole living.
1:300
But you, being in such abundance, are more sparing than she.
1:301
Let us not, then, be careless of our own salvation, but let us apply ourselves to almsgiving.
1:302
For nothing is better than this.
1:303
And the time to come shall show it.
1:304
Yet for the present the time now here has also shown it.
1:305
因此,讓我們為神的榮耀而活,行祂所喜悅的事,好叫我們配得那所應許的美善之事;
Let us therefore live to the glory of God, and let us do the things that are pleasing to Him, that we may be counted worthy of the good things that are promised;
1:306
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might, the honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
