為此,我們自從聽見的那日起,也就不住地為你們禱告祈求,願你們在一切屬靈的智慧和悟性上,滿有認識神旨意的知識;
For this cause we also, from the day we heard it, do not cease praying for you, and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding;
2:2
that you may walk worthily of the Lord unto all pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.
2:3
「為此」——為著什麼緣故呢?因為我們聽見了你們的信心與愛心;
'For this cause' — for what cause? Because we heard of your faith and love;
2:4
because we have good hopes, we are also of good courage to ask concerning the things to come.
2:5
For just as in contests we most of all rouse those who are near to victory,
2:6
so also Paul most of all exhorts those who have already achieved the greater part.
2:7
'From the day we heard it,' he says, 'we do not cease praying for you.'
2:8
We pray for you not one day, nor two, nor three.
2:9
在此,他一面顯出他的愛,一面又婉轉地暗示他們尚未達到目標;
Here he both shows his love, and gently hints to them that they had not yet arrived at the goal;
2:10
for the phrase 'that you may be filled' was declaring this.
2:11
求你留意這位有福之人的明辨;
And observe, I pray you, the discernment of this blessed man;
2:12
他從未說他們全然缺乏,只說他們在各方面尚有欠缺;
nowhere does he say that they had been deprived of the whole, but that they were falling short in every part;
2:13
for the phrase 'that you may be filled' declares this.
2:14
又說:「凡事蒙祂喜悅,在一切善工上結果子」;
And again, 'unto all pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work';
2:15
又說:「照祂榮耀的權能,得以在各樣的力上加力」;
and again, 'strengthened with all power';
2:16
and again, 'unto all patience and longsuffering.'
2:17
For the word 'all' bears witness that they too possess something of those who succeed, even if not the whole.
2:18
他又說:「叫你們得以滿足」,而不是說:「叫你們得著」;
And 'that you may be filled,' he says, not 'that you may receive';
2:19
but 'that you may be filled' in that which is lacking.
2:20
Thus the reproof too became free of offence, and the commendation, being complete, did not suffer them to fall down and become supine.
2:21
But what is 'that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will'? That is, that you must be brought to Him through the Son, no longer through angels.
2:22
你們固然已經知道,必須被引到近前;
That you must indeed be brought near, you have known;
2:23
but this still remains for you to learn — and why He sent the Son.
2:24
For if it had been necessary to be saved through angels, He would not have sent the Son, He would not have given Him up.
2:25
'In all wisdom,' he says, 'and spiritual understanding.'
2:26
For since the philosophers were deceiving them, 'I wish you,' he says, 'to be in spiritual wisdom, not according to the wisdom of men.'
2:27
But if, in order to learn the will of God, spiritual wisdom is needed — so as to know what His essence is — there is need of unceasing prayers.
2:28
他在此顯明,保羅從那時起就一直禱告,尚未成就,卻也未曾止息;
And he shows here that Paul had been praying from that time and had not yet accomplished it, and had not desisted;
2:29
for the phrase 'from the day we heard it' declares this.
2:30
But it brings much condemnation upon them, if being helped by prayers from that time they did not recover themselves.
2:31
他說:「並且祈求」——就是帶著極大的殷勤;
'And asking,' he says — that is, with much earnestness;
2:32
for this the word 'you have known' shows.
2:33
But there is need also to come to full knowledge of something.
2:34
'That you may walk worthily of the Lord.'
2:35
在此他是論到生活與行為;
Here he speaks concerning conduct and works;
2:36
因為這事他到處都如此行;
for this too he does everywhere;
2:37
he always joins conduct with faith.
2:38
But how 'unto all pleasing'? 'Bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.'
2:39
他說:「正如祂一下子向你們啟示了自己,正如你們領受了這樣大的知識,你們也當顯出與這信心相稱的生活;
'Just as,' he says, 'He revealed Himself to you all at once, and just as you received so great a knowledge, so also show forth a manner of life worthy of the faith;
2:40
for this faith requires a great manner of life, and much greater than the old.'
2:41
For he who has known God, and has been counted worthy to be God's servant — nay rather, His son too — see how great a virtue he needs.
2:42
'Strengthened with all power.'
2:43
Here he speaks concerning trials and persecutions: 'We pray that you may be filled, being strengthened, so as not to grow weary, nor to despair.'
2:44
'According to the might of His glory.'
2:45
This is why I pray, he says, that you may take up such eagerness as befits those who are to give it according to the might of His glory.
2:46
'Unto all patience and longsuffering.'
2:47
In brief we pray, he says, that you may lead a virtuous life worthy of your calling, and that you may stand firmly, as is fitting for those who have been strengthened by God.
2:48
因此他暫且還不論到教義,卻著重在生活行為上,因為在這方面他無可指責他們;
For this reason he does not yet touch upon doctrines, but dwells in the matter of conduct, wherein he had nothing to lay to their charge;
2:49
and having praised them for what was fitting, he then descends to accusation.
2:50
這是他處處所行的;
This he does everywhere;
2:51
for whenever he is about to write to any, having something to blame yet also something to praise, he first praises, and then descends to the charges.
2:52
For he first wins over his hearer, and frees his accusation from all suspicion, and shows that he himself desired throughout to commend them, but is forced by necessity into these words of reproof.
2:53
This he does also in the former Epistle to the Corinthians.
2:54
For having praised them exceedingly as loving him, he then, beginning even from the case of the fornicator, descends to accusation.
2:55
但在加拉太書中卻不再如此,反倒相反;
But in the Epistle to the Galatians it is no longer so, but the contrary;
2:56
or rather, if one examines it, there too the accusation proceeds from praise.
2:57
因為那時他既沒有他們任何正確之事可提,而所指控的又極其嚴重,眾人都已敗壞,並且他們既剛強,便能承受得住,所以他就從責備起頭,說:「我希奇」;
For since he had at that time nothing right of theirs to mention, and the charge was severe, and all had been corrupted, and being strong they were able to bear it, he begins from accusation, saying, 'I marvel';
2:58
so that this too is a form of praise.
2:59
And afterwards he praises them, not for their present state, but for what was past, saying that, 'If it had been possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.'
2:60
This 'being strengthened' refers to works.
2:61
'Unto all patience and longsuffering':
2:62
longsuffering toward one another, patience toward those outside.
2:63
For one is longsuffering toward those whom it is even possible to avenge oneself upon, but endures those whom one is not able to avenge oneself upon.
2:64
因此,論到神,從不說「忍耐」,卻多處說「恆忍」;
For this reason, in the case of God patience is never spoken of, but longsuffering in many places;
2:65
even as this same blessed one says, writing elsewhere:
2:66
'Or do you despise the riches of His kindness and forbearance and longsuffering?' 'Unto all.'
2:67
Not now indeed, but afterwards no longer.
2:68
'In all,' he says, 'wisdom and spiritual understanding.'
2:69
For in no other way is it possible to come to know His will.
2:70
And yet they thought they had His will, but the wisdom was not spiritual.
2:71
'That you may walk,' he says, 'worthily of the Lord.'
2:72
For this becomes the road to the most excellent way of life.
2:73
因為那已深切領會神對人之慈愛的人;
For he who has learned thoroughly the love of God toward mankind;
2:74
而他若看見那子為我們被交出,就必深切領會這愛;
and he learns it thoroughly, if he sees the Son given up for us;
2:75
再者,我們禱告,不僅要你們明白這事,也要你們在行為上顯明出來;
And moreover, we pray not only that you may learn this, but that you may also display it in works;
2:76
for he who knows without doing is destined even to be punished.
2:77
他說,「好叫你們行事為人」;
'That you may walk,' he says;
2:78
that is, always, not once only, but continually.
2:79
As walking is necessary for us, so also is living rightly.
2:80
他總是把這樣的事稱為「行走」,這是合宜的,藉此指明這才是擺在我們面前的生活;
And he always calls such a thing a 'walk,' and rightly so, showing that this is the life set before us;
2:81
but not the worldly life which is of that kind.
2:82
'That you may walk,' he says, 'worthily of the Lord,' and, 'In
2:83
凡事上,在一切善事上」,好叫你們常常長進,絕不停滯不前;
every good work,' so as always to make progress, and nowhere to stand still;
2:84
and metaphorically, 'Bearing fruit and increasing in the knowledge of God,' that so you may be strengthened according to the power of God, as far as was possible for man.
2:85
He did not say 'power,' but 'might,' which is greater.
2:86
他說,「照著祂榮耀的權能」;
'By the might,' he says, 'of His glory';
2:87
because everywhere His glory prevails.
2:88
He has already comforted those who were in reproach, and again, 'that you may walk worthily of the Lord.'
2:89
He says this concerning the Son, that He prevails everywhere, both in heaven and on earth, because His glory reigns everywhere.
2:90
'Not simply,' he says, 'be strengthened,' but as is fitting for those who serve so mighty a Master.
2:91
同時他也順帶提到有關知識的話;
At the same time he also touches upon the words of knowledge;
2:92
for this is to have gone astray, not to know God as one ought.
2:93
Or, 'so that you may make progress,' he says, 'in the knowledge of God.'
2:94
因為那不認識子的,也就不認識父,所以這認識確是必需的;
For if he who does not know the Son does not know the Father either, then rightly is this knowledge needed;
2:95
for there is no profit in life without this.
2:96
'Unto all patience and longsuffering,' he says, 'with joy giving thanks to God.'
2:97
隨後,他既要勸勉他們,就不提那為他們存留在將來的事,這事他已在起頭時隱約提過,說:「因那給你們存在諸天之上的盼望」;
Then, being about to exhort them, he does not make mention of the things laid up for them in the future, but this he hinted at in the beginning, saying, 'For the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens';
2:98
但在這裡他所題的,卻是那些已經成就的事;
but here he makes mention of things that have already come to pass;
2:99
for the things that have already happened produce more conviction, and more effectively win over the hearer.
2:100
'With joy,' he says, 'giving thanks to God.'
2:101
We do not cease praying on your behalf, and giving thanks for your former state.
2:102
Do you see how he brings himself into the discourse concerning the Son? For if we give thanks with great joy, then great are the things being spoken of.
2:103
因為人可能僅僅出於懼怕而感謝;也可能在憂傷中感謝,正如約伯雖在痛苦中,仍然感謝;
For it is possible to give thanks merely out of fear; it is possible also to give thanks while in grief, as Job gave thanks, though in pain;
2:104
wherefore also he said, 'The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away.'
2:105
For let no one say that what happened did not grieve him, nor that it did not cast him into dejection.
2:106
Nor let anyone rob the righteous man of his great praise.
2:107
But when things are of such a kind, then it is not on account of fear, nor merely on account of His lordship, but on account of the very nature of the things themselves, that we give thanks 'to Him who has made us fit for the portion of the inheritance of the saints in light.'
2:108
Such, he says, are the things given, that He not only gave, but also made us strong to receive them.
2:109
By saying then, 'To Him who has made us fit,' he showed the great weight of the matter.
2:110
譬如,若一個卑微的人成了君王,他便能把足夠的供給賜給他所願意的人;
For instance, if one who is of low estate should become a king, it is possible for him to give sufficiency to whomever he wishes;
2:111
他所能作的不過如此,就是賜與尊位,卻不能同時使他配得那職分(而這樣的尊榮往往反倒使那人成為笑柄);
and he is only able to do this much, to give the rank, but not also to make him fit for the office (and often such honor even makes the man ridiculous);
2:112
if however he both gives the rank, and makes him fit for the honor, and sufficient for the administration, then the thing is truly an honor.
2:113
This then is what he says here also, that God not only gave us the honor, but also made us strong to receive it.
2:114
For this is a double honor, both to give, and to prepare us fit for the gift.
2:115
He did not say simply, 'to Him who gave,' but, 'to Him who made us fit for the portion of the inheritance of the saints in light.'
2:116
That is, to Him who ranked us together with the saints.
2:117
But he did not say simply, 'to Him who ranked us,' but also, 'to Him who granted us to enjoy the very same things.'
2:118
For the portion is that very thing which each one receives.
2:119
因為人可以同住在一座城裡,卻不享受同樣的事物;
For it is possible to be in the same city and yet not to enjoy the same things;
2:120
but to have the same portion and yet not to enjoy the same things is not possible.
2:121
人可以在同一份基業中,卻不擁有同樣的分;
It is possible to be in the same inheritance and yet not to have the same portion;
2:122
for instance, we are all in the inheritance, but we do not all have the same portion.
2:123
But here he does not mean this, but rather the portion together with the inheritance.
2:124
他為何稱之為「基業(承受的產業)」呢?是要顯明沒有人是憑自己的善行得著國度的;
And why does he call it an inheritance? To show that no one obtains the kingdom by his own good deeds;
2:125
but just as an inheritance is a matter of good fortune rather than of merit, so indeed it is here also.
2:126
For no one displays such a manner of life as to be counted worthy of the kingdom, but the whole is of His gift.
2:127
正如祂所說:「你們作完了一切,要說:我們是無用的僕人;
As He says, 'When you have done all things, say, We are unprofitable servants;
2:128
for we have done that which was our duty to do.'
2:129
'For the portion of the inheritance of the saints in light.'
2:130
And it seems to me that he speaks at once both of things present and of things to come.
2:131
Then he shows of what things we have been counted worthy.
2:132
For it is not this alone which is marvellous, that we are counted worthy of the kingdom, but also who we were when we received it; this must be added.
2:133
This is the very thing he does also in the Epistle to the Romans, saying:
2:134
「為義人死,是少有的;
'For scarcely for a righteous man will one die;
2:135
yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die.'
2:136
'Who delivered us,' he says, 'from the power of darkness.'
2:137
這一切全在於祂——無論是賜這些,還是賜那些;
The whole is His—both to give these things and those;
2:138
for nowhere is there any good deed of ours.
2:139
他說:「脫離黑暗的權勢」;
'From the power of darkness,' he says;
2:140
that is, from error, from the tyranny of the devil.
2:141
他不是單單說「黑暗」,而是說「權勢」;
He did not say simply, 'darkness,' but, 'power';
2:142
for it held great power over us, and had dominion over us.
2:143
因為單單落在魔鬼底下,已經是何等悲慘;
For grievous indeed it is even simply to be under the devil;
2:144
but to be under him with authority—this is more grievous still.
2:145
'And translated us,' he says, 'into the kingdom of the Son of His love.'
2:146
Not then only in the deliverance from darkness did He show His love toward mankind.
2:147
單單使我們脫離黑暗,這已是何等的大事;
Great indeed is it even to have delivered us from the darkness;
2:148
but to have brought us also into a kingdom is far greater.
2:149
See then how manifold the gift becomes: that He delivered us when we lay in the very depths, that He not only delivered us but also transferred us into a kingdom.
2:150
He did not say 'cast out,' but 'delivered,' showing our great wretchedness, and their captivity.
2:151
接著又顯明神大能的輕而易舉;
Then also the ease of God's power;
2:152
as if one should move a soldier from place to place.
2:153
他也沒有說「帶過去」,也沒有說「挪移」;
And he did not say 'led over,' nor 'transferred';
2:154
因為若那樣,這一切就全歸於那遷移者,而不歸於那被遷過去的人;
for the whole of that would have belonged to Him who transferred, not to him who was brought over;
2:155
but he said, 'translated,' so that this might be both ours and His.
2:156
'Into the kingdom of the Son of His love.'
2:157
他不是單單說「諸天的國」,而是把這話說得更加尊貴,說「愛子的國」;
He did not say simply, 'the kingdom of the heavens,' but he rendered the expression more august, saying, 'the kingdom of the Son';
2:158
因為再沒有比這更大的稱讚了;
for there is no greater encomium than this;
2:159
'If we endure, we shall also reign with Him.'
2:160
他說:「祂使我們與那子一同配得同樣的事」;
'He counted us worthy of the same things as the Son,' he says;
2:161
and not this only, but there is also the intensification, 'the beloved.'
2:162
The enemies, those darkened ones, all at once He translated somewhere—there where the Son is, into the very same honour as He.
2:163
祂還不以此為足,乃是為要顯明這恩賜何等浩大,不以說「一個國度」為滿足,還加上「那子的」;
And He was not content with this alone, but, to show how great the gift was, He was not content with saying 'a kingdom,' but added 'of the Son';
2:164
甚至連這也不夠,還加上「所愛的」;
and not even with this, but also 'of the beloved';
2:165
and not even with this, but also the dignity of His nature.
2:166
For what does he say? 'Who is the image of the invisible God.'
2:167
But he did not come to this at once; rather he first inserted the benefit conferred upon us.
2:168
For lest, hearing that the whole was the Father's, you should suppose the Son to be excluded, he gives the whole both to the Son, and gives it also to the Father.
2:169
For the One transferred us, but this One furnished the cause.
2:170
For what does he say? 'Who delivered us out of the power of darkness.'
2:171
And this is the same as saying, 'In whom we have the redemption, the forgiveness of sins.'
2:172
For if we had not been forgiven our sins, we should not have been translated.
2:173
Behold again here the phrase, 'In whom.'
2:174
And he did not say 'ransoming,' but 'redemption,' so that we should no longer fall, nor become subject to death.
2:175
'Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.'
2:176
我們正碰上一個異端最愛抓住的問題;
We are falling upon a question that is dear to the heretics;
2:177
wherefore, deferring it today, we must add it tomorrow, addressing it to your ears while they are at their keenest.
2:178
But if one must say something further, the Son's work is greater.
2:179
怎麼說呢?因為那一件事(把國度賜給仍活在罪中的人)成了不可能的,而這一件卻是較為容易的;
How so? For that other thing becomes impossible—to give a kingdom to those who remain in their sins—but this is easier;
2:180
What do you say? He Himself forgave you your sins; therefore He Himself also brought you near.
2:181
He has already laid down beforehand the root of the doctrine.
2:182
But for the present it is necessary, after saying that one thing, to bring the discourse to a pause.
2:183
And what is this? That having enjoyed so great a benefit, we ought ever to be mindful of it, and to turn over
2:184
continually within ourselves the gift of God, and to ponder both from what things we have been delivered, and what things we have obtained.
2:185
And thus we shall be thankful, thus we shall heighten our love toward Him.
2:186
What are you saying, O man? You have been called to a kingdom, to the kingdom of the Son of God, and you are filled with yawning, and you scratch yourself, and you grow numb? For if it were necessary to leap into ten thousand deaths every single day, ought you not to endure them all? Yet for the sake of a magistracy you do anything whatsoever, but when you are about to share in the kingdom of the Only-begotten, you do not fling yourself down upon ten thousand swords, you do not leap into fire? And this is not yet the dreadful thing, but rather that, when you are about to depart, you lament, and you cling fondly to the things here, being a lover of the body.
2:187
What then is this? Do you actually reckon death to be a thing of horror? Luxury is the cause of this, and soft ease.
2:188
For surely the one who lives a most bitter life would choose even to take wing and to be delivered from here.
2:189
But as it is, we suffer the very same thing as fledglings that have been coddled, wishing to remain forever upon the nest.
2:190
But the longer we remain, the weaker we shall become.
2:191
For the present life is a nest, glued together out of twigs and mud.
2:192
縱使你指給我看那宏偉的宅第,就是那閃耀著大量黃金與寶石的宮殿,我也必以為它們與燕子的窩巢毫無分別;
Even if you show me the great mansions, even the very palaces gleaming with abundant gold and precious stones, I shall reckon them in no way to differ from the nest of swallows;
2:193
因為當寒冬臨到,這一切都必自行傾倒;
for when winter comes upon them, all these will collapse of their own accord;
2:194
and by winter I mean that Day—not a winter to all.
2:195
Since God too calls that season both night and day at once—the one with reference to sinners, the other with reference to the righteous.
2:196
So I too now call it winter.
2:197
If in the summer we are not well nourished, so as to be able to fly when winter comes upon us, the mother birds will not take us up, but will let us be destroyed by famine, or perish when the nest falls.
2:198
For just as a nest—nay rather, even more easily than a nest—God will then take everything down, dismantling and refashioning all things.
2:199
But those who are without wings and unable to meet Him in the air, but were reared in so coarse a fashion as not to have the wing light, will suffer all these things which it is likely that those so disposed should suffer.
2:200
燕子的窩巢一旦墜落,便迅速毀滅;
Now the nest of swallows, when it falls down, is quickly destroyed;
2:201
but we shall not be destroyed, but shall be punished perpetually.
2:202
Winter will that season then be—nay rather, more grievous than winter.
2:203
因為所沖下的不是奔流的洪水,乃是火的江河;
For torrents of water are not swept down, but rivers of fire;
2:204
darkness comes not from clouds, but a darkness that cannot be dispelled and is without light, so that one can see neither the heaven nor the air, but is more straitened than those buried in the earth.
2:205
Often we say these things, but we persuade no one.
2:206
And it is no wonder if we, mean men, suffer this in discoursing about such matters, seeing that even the prophets suffered these things, and that when discoursing not only about such matters,
2:207
but also about war and captivity.
2:208
And Zedekiah was rebuked by Jeremiah, yet he was not ashamed.
2:209
For this reason the prophets said:
2:210
Woe to those who say, 'Let what God will do draw near in haste, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel come, that we may know it.'
2:211
因為那方舟時代的人也不信,直到信心已無利可得時,他們才信;
For neither did those in the days of the ark believe, but they believed when there was no longer any gain from faith;
2:212
nor did those in Sodom expect it, but they too believed when nothing more availed them.
2:213
And why do I speak of things to come? Who would have expected these things now happening in various places—the earthquakes, the destructions of cities? And yet these are more to be trusted than those—I mean than the ark.
2:214
這從何顯明呢?因為那些人並無別的例證可看,也未曾聽過聖經;
Whence is it plain? Because those men had no other example to look to, nor had they heard the Scriptures;
2:215
but here countless such things have happened, both in our own years and in those before us.
2:216
然而對這等事的不信是從何而來的呢?是從一顆軟弱的心而來;
But whence comes the disbelief of such things? From a soft soul;
2:217
they were drinking and eating, and for this reason they did not believe.
2:218
因為人所願望的,也就是他所以為的,也就是他所盼望的;
For whatever a man wishes, that also he supposes, that also he expects;
2:219
those who gainsay it are mere idle talk.
2:220
因為將來不再有洪水,那刑罰也不僅止於死亡;
For there will be no flood any longer, nor will the punishment last only until death;
2:221
but death is the beginning of the torments for those who disbelieve that there is a judgment.
2:222
他說:『有誰從那裡回來,講說這些事呢?』你若是戲言說這話,就是這樣也不好;
'And who,' he says, 'has come from there and told these things?' If you say this in jest, even so it is not well;
2:223
因為在這等事上,人不可戲言;
for one must not jest in such matters;
2:224
因為我們所玩弄的不是玩物,乃是拿性命冒險而戲;
for we are not playing with playthings, but we play at our peril;
2:225
but if you are truly of this mind, and do not think there is anything after this, how do you say that you are a Christian? For I have no argument with those outside.
2:226
Why do you receive the bath of baptism? Why do you set foot in the church? For do we promise magistracies? All our hope is in the things to come.
2:227
Why then do you come forward, if you do not believe the Scriptures, if you do not believe Christ? I would not call such a man a Christian—God forbid—but even worse than the pagans.
2:228
In what respect? In this: that while reckoning Christ to be God, you do not believe Him as God.
2:229
因為他們那種不敬虔,至少還前後一致;
For that impiety of theirs is at least consistent;
2:230
因為那不認基督為神的人,勢必也不信祂;
for he who does not reckon Christ to be God must of necessity not believe Him either;
2:231
but this impiety has not even consistency—to confess Him as God, and yet not to reckon Him worthy of belief concerning the things He said.
2:232
這些話是醉酒的話,是宴樂的話,是奢侈放蕩的話;
These are the words of drunkenness, of luxury, of wanton excess;
2:233
Not tomorrow, but the very moment you speak these things, you are already dead.
2:234
Shall we then differ in nothing from swine or from asses, tell me? For if there is neither judgment, nor recompense, nor tribunal, for what purpose have we been honored with such a gift—reason—and have all things made subject to us? Why do we rule, while they are ruled? See how from every side the devil presses on to persuade us to be ignorant of the gift of God.
2:235
牠將奴僕與主人混雜在一起;
He mingles the slaves with the masters;
2:236
just as some kidnapper or thankless house-slave forces the free man down into the same baseness as the one who has given offense.
2:237
And he seems to be doing away with the judgment, but he is doing away with the existence of God.
2:238
For such is the devil ever: he puts everything forward by craft, and not straightforwardly, so that we may be on our guard.
2:239
若沒有審判,神就不是公義的;
If there is no judgment, God is not just;
2:240
若神不是公義的,就根本沒有神;
if God is not just, neither is there a God;
2:241
if there is no God, all things are borne along at random, virtue is nothing, vice is nothing.
2:242
But he says none of these things openly.
2:243
Do you see the mind of the satanic scheme—how it wishes to turn men into irrational creatures, nay rather into wild beasts, nay rather into demons? Let us therefore not be persuaded.
2:244
For there is a judgment, O wretched and miserable man.
2:245
我知道你是從何處才落到這些話的;
I know whence you come to these words;
2:246
you have sinned much, you have given offense, you have no confidence, and you think that the nature of things also follows along with your words.
2:247
他說:『眼下,且讓我不要以對地獄的預期使我的魂憂傷;
'For the present,' he says, 'let me not grieve my soul with the expectation of hell;
2:248
and even if there be a hell, I will persuade it that there is none.'
2:249
你為何罪上加罪呢?你若犯了罪,卻仍信有地獄,你不過是去為你的罪付代價而已;
Why do you add sins to sins? If, having sinned, you believe that there is a hell, you will depart to pay the penalty for your sins only;
2:250
但你若再加上這種不敬虔,你就要為這不敬虔,並為這番推理,付上最極重的刑罰;
but if you also add this impiety, you will pay the uttermost punishment both for the impiety and for this reasoning;
2:251
and the consolation that came to you for a brief moment will become for you the occasion of a cold and unending punishment.
2:252
你為何還說沒有地獄,慫恿別人犯罪呢?你為何欺哄那更單純的人呢?你為何鬆懈了百姓的手呢?就你這方面而言,一切都被傾覆了;
Why do you also urge others on to sin, by saying there is no hell? Why do you deceive the simpler sort? Why did you loosen the hands of the people? So far as it depends on you, everything has been overthrown;
2:253
殷勤的人不再更加殷勤,反成了懈怠的人;
the diligent will not become more diligent, but slothful;
2:254
nor will the wicked withdraw from their wickedness.
2:255
For do we obtain pardon for our own sins if we corrupt others? Do you not see how the devil set about to bring down Adam? Was pardon granted him for this? Rather, it became the occasion of a greater punishment.
2:256
For that we may be punished not only for our own sins but also for those of others, he contrives every device.
2:257
所以我們不要以為,把別人拖入與我們一同的滅亡裡,就能使那審判台對我們更加寬容;
Let us not then imagine that dragging others down into the same destruction with ourselves will make the tribunal more lenient toward us;
2:258
on the contrary, this very thing will make it more severe.
2:259
Why do we thrust ourselves forward and destroy ourselves? This is wholly satanic.
2:260
人哪,你犯了罪嗎?你有一位愛人的主宰;
O man, have you sinned? You have a Master who loves mankind;
2:261
entreat, supplicate, weep, groan, and put others in fear too, and beseech that they may not fall into the same faults.
2:262
If any servant in a household, being one of those who have given offence,
2:263
should say to his own child:
2:264
'My child, I have offended the master; do you take pains to please him, that you may not suffer the same things'—
2:265
請告訴我,他豈不會得著些寬容嗎?他豈不會使主人回心轉意、屈意相待嗎?但他若撇下這些話,反倒說那另一套話——譬如說,主人不會按各人所配得的報應各人,一切都不過是善惡混雜攪在一處,這家裡毫無公道感恩可言——你想主人對他會存怎樣的意念呢?他豈不要比為自己的過犯付上更重的罰嗎?這也是理所當然的;
will he not, tell me, find some pardon? Will he not bend and soften the master? But if, leaving these words aside, he says those other things—such as that the master will not render to each according to his desert, that everything is simply jumbled together, both the good and the bad, that there is no gratitude in this house—what mind do you suppose the master will have concerning him? Will he not indeed pay a greater penalty than for his own faults? And rightly so;
2:266
for there the passion will offer some defence, even if a weak one, but here there is none at all.
2:267
If then you will imitate no one else, at least imitate the rich man in hell, who said, 'Father Abraham, send Lazarus to my kinsmen, that they may not come into this place'—since he himself could not depart—so that they might not fall into the same sufferings.
2:268
Let us then depart from these satanic sayings.
2:269
'What then,' someone says, 'when the Greeks question us, do you not wish us to attend to them?' But by casting the Christian into perplexity under the pretext of attending to the Greek, you wish to confirm the satanic doctrine.
2:270
For since you yourself, reasoning about these matters with your soul alone, are not persuaded, you wish to bring in others as witnesses.
2:271
But if one must reason with a Greek, the beginning of the discussion is not here, but rather whether Christ is God and the Son of God, and whether the gods among them are demons.
2:272
這些事若得了確立,其餘的一切自然隨之而來;
If these things are established, all the rest follows;
2:273
但在奠定根基之前,去討論結論乃是徒然;
but before laying the foundation, it is vain to discuss the conclusion;
2:274
before learning the first elements, it is superfluous and useless to proceed to the end.
2:275
那希臘人不信有審判,而他所犯的正與你所犯的一樣;
The Greek disbelieves in the judgement, and he suffers the very same thing that you do;
2:276
因為連他們中間也有許多人曾就這些事論究過,縱然他們是把身體與魂靈割裂開來而如此說的;
since he too has many who have philosophized concerning these matters, even if they said this while severing the body from the soul;
2:277
yet nonetheless they set up a tribunal.
2:278
And so evident is the matter that scarcely anyone is ignorant of it; rather, even the poets and all men agree among themselves both concerning a tribunal and concerning a judgement.
2:279
So that neither does he disbelieve his own writers, nor does the Jew dispute about these things, nor does any man at all.
2:280
那麼我們為何自欺呢?看哪,你向我說這些話;
Why then do we deceive ourselves? Behold, you say these things to me;
2:281
but what will you say to God, who fashioned our hearts individually, who knows all that is in the mind, who is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword? For tell me truthfully:
2:282
do you not condemn yourself when you sin? Is there anyone among men who does not blame himself when he is slothful? And how could such great wisdom have arisen of itself, that the very one who sins condemns himself? For this belongs to great wisdom.
2:283
And will he who gave you such a mind simply let everything drift along unheeded? This then shall be a universal canon and rule:
2:284
凡活在美德中的,無論是希臘人或是異端,沒有一個不信審判之道的;
no one who lives in virtue disbelieves the doctrine of the judgement, be he Greek or heretic;
2:285
no one who lives immersed in much wickedness, save a few, accepts the doctrine of the resurrection.
2:286
And this the Psalmist also says:
2:287
'Thy judgements are taken away out of his sight.'
2:288
為甚麼呢?「因為他的道路時常污穢」;
Why so? 'Because his ways are profaned at all times';
2:289
'For let us eat,' he says, 'and let us drink.'
2:290
Do you see that it belongs to base men to say these things? From eating and drinking come these sayings that overturn the resurrection.
2:291
因為那從良心而生的審判,魂靈實在承受不起——實在承受不起;
For the soul cannot bear—it cannot bear—the tribunal that arises from conscience;
2:292
所發生的正如那兇手一樣,他先給自己設下一個前提,說自己必不被查獲,於是才行兇殺;
and the same thing happens as with the murderer, who first lays it down for himself that he will not be caught, and thus commits the murder;
2:293
since, if his conscience were condemning him, he would not so quickly have come to the daring deed.
2:294
所以他其實是知道的,卻假裝不知道,為要不被良心和懼怕折磨;
And so he both knows, and pretends to be ignorant, that he may not be tormented by conscience and by fear;
2:295
for otherwise he would have become too weak for the murder.
2:296
Just so also those who sin both know that to sin is an evil, and though daily wallowing in the same evils, they are unwilling to know it, even though their conscience is present.
2:297
但我們不要理會那些人;
But let us not give heed to those men;
2:298
for there will be, there most certainly will be a judgement and a resurrection, and God will not leave so many works to go for nothing.
2:299
Wherefore, I beseech you, abstaining from wickedness, let us hold fast to virtue, that we may receive the true doctrine in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2:300
然而哪一樣更容易呢:是接受復活之道,還是接受命定之說呢?那命定之說滿了不義、滿了無理、滿了殘忍、滿了無情;
And yet what is easier: to accept the doctrine of the resurrection, or that of fate? The one is full of injustice, of unreason, of cruelty, of inhumanity;
2:301
而復活之道卻滿了公義,按各人所配得的分給各人;
the other, of righteousness, distributing to each according to his desert;
2:302
and yet they do not accept it,
2:303
since no one who has understanding accepts that other one.
2:304
因為就是在希臘人中間,那些以享樂為人生終極目的的人,也接受了那命定之說;
For indeed even among the Greeks, those who define pleasure to be the end, they accepted it;
2:305
but those who loved virtue did so no longer, but cast it out as irrational.
2:306
And if this is so among the Greeks, much more is it so also in the doctrine concerning the resurrection.
2:307
但請與我一同思想,魔鬼怎樣設計了兩件相反的事;
But consider with me how the devil devised two contrary things;
2:308
for in order that we might neglect virtue and that we might serve demons, he introduced necessity, and by means of each he persuaded men to both.
2:309
那麼,那不信這樣奇妙之事、反倒被那些胡言亂語之人所說服的,還能提出甚麼辯解呢?所以,連這樣的安慰——以為你必得赦免——也不要餵養你;
What defence then will he be able to give who disbelieves so marvellous a thing, and yet is persuaded by those who talk such nonsense? Let not then even this consolation nourish you, that you will obtain pardon;
2:310
but gathering ourselves together, let us rouse ourselves to virtue, and let us truly live to God, in Christ, and so forth.
