'Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord;'
10:2
'and whatsoever you do in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father through him.'
10:3
Having exhorted them to be thankful, he shows also the way.
10:4
What sort of way is this? The very one of which we lately discoursed to you.
10:5
Saying what? 'Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.'
10:6
Or rather, not this alone, but also another way.
10:7
因為我曾說過,那些遭遇更慘之事的人當一一數算,那些忍受過比我們所受更艱難之事的人當細細思量,並要為那些災禍未曾臨到我們而感謝;
For I, on my part, said that those who have suffered more grievous things should recount them, and that those who have endured harder things than what we suffer should reckon them up, and give thanks that those calamities did not befall us;
10:8
but what does he himself say? 'Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly;'
10:9
that is, the teaching, the doctrines, the exhortation, in which he declares that the present life is nothing, nor are its good things.
10:10
For if we behold these things, we shall yield to none of the hardships.
10:11
'Let it dwell,' he says, 'in you richly'—not simply, but with great abundance.
10:12
你們一切在世務中、又要照管妻子兒女的人哪,聽著,他是何等切切地囑咐你們要誦讀聖經;
Hear, all you who are worldly and have charge of wife and children, how he enjoins upon you above all to read the Scriptures;
10:13
and not simply, nor in a chance manner, but with great diligence.
10:14
For as the man rich in money is able to bear loss and penalty, so he who is rich in the doctrines of true philosophy will easily bear not poverty only, but also all misfortunes, and far more easily than the other.
10:15
因為在前一種情形,當償付虧損之時,那富有的人必然要減損,並被顯露出來;
For in the one case, in the paying off of the loss, the man who is rich must needs be diminished and be put to the proof;
10:16
他若屢次遭遇這事,就再也承受不住了;
and should he suffer this often, he will no longer be able to bear it;
10:17
for we do not expend our sound reasonings when it is needful to bear something of the things we would not wish, but they abide throughout.
10:18
你且看這位有福之人的明達;
And mark the discernment of this blessed man;
10:19
'Let the word of Christ be in you'—not simply, but what? 'Let it dwell,' and, 'Richly.'
10:20
'In all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another.'
10:21
因為謙卑、施捨、以及一切這類的事,都是智慧;
for humility too, and almsgiving, and all such things, are wisdom;
10:22
just as, on the contrary, their opposites are folly.
10:23
Whence in many places he calls all sin folly.
10:24
'The fool,' he says, 'has said in his heart, There is no God;'
10:25
and again, 'My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.'
10:26
For what, tell me, is more senseless than one who wraps himself in garments, yet overlooks his own brethren going naked? than one who feeds dogs, but neglects the image of God perishing in famine? than one who is simply persuaded that human affairs are nothing, and yet clings to them as though they were immortal? As, therefore, nothing is more senseless than such a man, so nothing is wiser than he who pursues virtue.
10:27
他說,你且看這人是何等有智慧;
For see, he says, how wise he is;
10:28
他把自己所有的分給人,他有憐憫,他待人仁慈;
he imparts of his goods, he is merciful, he is kindly toward men;
10:29
他認清了人的本性乃是眾人所共有的;
he has recognized that our nature is common to all;
10:30
他認清了錢財的用處,知道它毫無足道之處;
he has recognized the use of money, that it is worth no account;
10:31
that one must spare one's own body rather than one's money.
10:32
因此,他既輕看虛榮,就也是一個愛智慧的人;
Wherefore, despising glory, he is also a lover of wisdom;
10:33
for he knows human affairs for what they are.
10:34
Philosophy is the knowledge of things divine and human.
10:35
因此他知道甚麼是神聖之事,甚麼是屬人之事,對前者他有所節制,對後者他則付諸實行;
He knows, then, what things are divine and what are human, and from the one he abstains, but the other he practices;
10:36
他有此認識,就凡事感謝神;
he knows, and gives thanks to God in all things;
10:37
他看今生算不得甚麼;
he counts the present life to be nothing;
10:38
therefore he neither delights in prosperity, nor grieves in adversity.
10:39
不要等候別的教師;
Do not wait for another teacher;
10:40
no one teaches you as those Scriptures do.
10:41
因為人的教師往往隱瞞許多,既出於虛榮,又出於嫉妒;
For a human teacher often conceals much, both through vainglory and through envy;
10:42
Hear, I beseech you, all you who are engaged in the affairs of life, and acquire books, the medicines of the soul.
10:43
If you will have nothing else, at least acquire the New Testament, the Acts of the Apostles, the Gospels, as continual teachers.
10:44
你若遭遇憂傷,就俯身於這些書卷,如同俯身於一箱藥品;
If grief befall you, bend over them as over a chest of medicines;
10:45
從那裏支取安慰以解你的患難,無論是虧損、是死亡、或是親人的喪失;
take thence consolation for your trouble, whether it be loss, or death, or the bereavement of kinsfolk;
10:46
or rather, do not merely bend over them, but take up the whole of them, and keep them in your mind.
10:47
This is the cause of all evils—the not knowing the Scriptures.
10:48
我們赤手空拳,毫無兵器,就上陣去打仗;
We march to war without arms;
10:49
and how are we to be saved? It is a great thing to be saved even with these arms, much less without them.
10:50
不要把一切都推到我們身上;
Do not cast everything upon us;
10:51
你們是羊,卻不是沒有理性的,乃是有理性的;
you are sheep, yet not without reason, but endowed with reason;
10:52
Paul commits many things to you also.
10:53
受教的人不會一輩子總停留在學習上,否則他們就等於沒有真正受教;
Those who are being taught do not spend all their time forever in learning, since then they are not truly taught;
10:54
if you are always learning, you will never have learned.
10:55
不要以永遠只是學習者的姿態前來;
Come not as one who will forever be learning;
10:56
since so you will never know, but come as one who will finish learning, and will teach another.
10:57
但請告訴我,眾人在求學上、在各樣技藝上,豈不都是在定期之內用功嗎?我們眾人都是這樣定出明確的期限;
But tell me, do not all men remain for appointed seasons at their studies, and in all the arts whatsoever? Thus we all fix a definite time;
10:58
but if one is always learning, it is a proof of having learned nothing.
10:59
This reproach God spoke against the Jews:
10:60
'Borne from the womb, and being instructed even unto old age.'
10:61
If you did not always expect this, all things would not thus go backward.
10:62
倘若有些人已經學成,另一些人即將學成,這工作在我們手中就早已向前推進了;
If it were possible for some to be already learned, and others to be about to become so, the work would have advanced for us;
10:63
you would have given place to others, and would have lent your aid to us as well.
10:64
Tell me, if some were to go to a schoolmaster, and then were to remain forever learning their letters, would they not cause the teacher much toil? How long shall we keep discoursing to you about the conduct of life? In the days of the Apostles it was not so; rather, they were continually passing on, appointing those who had learned before as teachers of certain others who were being made disciples.
10:65
In this way they were able to go about the whole inhabited world, precisely because they were not bound fast to any one place.
10:66
How much instruction do you suppose your brethren out in the fields need, and their teachers as well? Yet you hold me fast, having nailed me down.
10:67
For before the head has been rightly ordered, it is superfluous to proceed to the rest of the body.
10:68
你們本當單單從我們學習;
You ought to learn from us alone;
10:69
而婦女們當從你們學習,孩童們也當從你們學習;
but the women should learn from you, and the children from you;
10:70
yet you leave everything to us.
10:71
'Teaching,' he says, 'and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.'
10:72
Observe also the gentleness of Paul, that he lays no heavy burden.
10:73
Since reading involves toil, and much that is burdensome, he did not lead them to narrative histories, but to psalms, so that at once you may both delight your soul by singing, and beguile the toil away.
10:74
'With hymns,' he says, 'and spiritual songs.'
10:75
但如今,你們的孩子們卻學撒但的歌曲和舞蹈,好像廚役、辦席的和跳舞的一樣;
But as it is, your children take up satanic songs and dances, like cooks and caterers and stage-dancers;
10:76
yet not a single one knows any psalm at all; nay, the thing even seems to be a shame and a mockery and a matter for laughter.
10:77
From that source all the evils are kept in being.
10:78
For in whatever soil a plant may stand, such is the fruit it bears.
10:79
若栽在沙地和鹹地裡,所結的便是那樣的;
if in sandy and briny soil, such is its fruit;
10:80
if in sweet and rich soil, again the fruit is like it.
10:81
Thus teachings are a kind of spring.
10:82
Teach him to sing those psalms that are laden with wisdom—for example, on temperance from the very start; or rather, before all else, on not keeping company with the wicked—right from the very beginning of the book (for it was for this reason that the Prophet also began from this point, saying:
10:83
「不從惡人計謀的,這人便為有福」;
'Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly';
10:84
and again, 'I have not sat with the assembly of vanity.'
10:85
「惡人在他眼中被藐視;
'In his sight the evildoer is despised;
10:86
至於敬畏耶和華的人,他卻尊重」);
but he honors those who fear the Lord').
10:87
又有關於與善人結交的(這些你也必在那裡找到);
on keeping company with the good (these things too you will find there);
10:88
有關於制伏肚腹的,有關於約束雙手的,有關於不貪婪的;
on ruling over the belly, on restraining the hands, on not being covetous;
10:89
that riches are nothing, nor glory, and all things of that kind.
10:90
When from childhood you have led him on in these things, little by little you will lead him also to the loftier ones.
10:91
詩篇包含一切,頌詞卻又全無人間之事;
The psalms contain all things, but the hymns again have nothing human;
10:92
when he has learned in the psalms, then he will also come to know the hymns, as being a more divine matter.
10:93
因為天上的眾能者是唱頌詞,並不唱詩篇;
For the powers above sing hymns, they do not chant psalms;
10:94
因為經上說:「讚美的話從罪人口中發出,並不合宜」;
for 'praise is not comely in the mouth of a sinner,' it says;
10:95
又說:「我眼看國中的誠實人,叫他們與我同住」;
and again, 'My eyes are upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell together with me';
10:96
又說:「行驕傲的必不得住在我家之內」;
and again, 'He that works pride did not dwell in the midst of my house';
10:97
and again, 'He that walked in a blameless way, he ministered to me.'
10:98
So take care to associate yourselves not only with friends, but not even with servants who are corrupt.
10:99
For countless evils come upon the free-born, whenever we set corrupted slaves over them.
10:100
因為他們縱然享有父親的慈愛,並這樣豐富的智慧,尚且勉強得以保全;
For if, even while enjoying a father's tender affection and such great wisdom, they are scarcely preserved,
10:101
when we hand them over to the negligence of servants, what will they become? Men treat their slaves as though they were enemies, supposing that their mastery over them is the more secure if they render them stupid and base and worthy of no account.
10:102
Before all else, then, let us be diligent in these matters.
10:103
'I have loved,' he says, 'those who love your law.'
10:104
This man, then, let us also emulate, and let us love such as these.
10:105
為叫孩子們也能有節制自守,讓他們聽先知說:「我滿腰是恥辱」;
And that the children may in turn be temperate, let them hear the Prophet saying, that 'My loins are filled with mockings';
10:106
and again, 'You will utterly destroy every one that plays the harlot away from you.'
10:107
And that one must restrain the belly, let them hear again:
10:108
'And he slew,' it says, 'among the greater part of them, while the meat was yet in their mouths.'
10:109
And that one must be master over gifts, from this they will learn:
10:110
經上說:「若財寶加增,不要放在心上」;
'If riches,' it says, 'flow in, set not your heart upon them';
10:111
and that they should be master over glory, this too they will find:
10:112
'Nor shall his glory go down after him with him.'
10:113
「不要為作惡的心懷不平」;
'Do not be envious over those that do evil';
10:114
要把權勢看為虛無;
to count dominions as nothing;
10:115
「我見過惡人高抬自己,昌盛如利巴嫩的香柏樹;我從那裡經過,看哪,他已不在了」;
'I saw the ungodly exalted on high and lifted up like the cedars of Lebanon, and I passed by, and behold, he was not';
10:116
要把現今的事看為烏有;
to reckon present things as nothing;
10:117
「有這些的百姓,人稱他們為有福」;
'They have called the people blessed to whom these things belong';
10:118
「以耶和華他們的神為幫助的,這百姓便為有福」;
'blessed is the people whose helper is the Lord their God';
10:119
我們犯罪並非毫無後果,乃是有報應的;
that we do not sin without consequence, but there is a recompense;
10:120
that 'You will render,' it says, 'to each according to his works.'
10:121
他為何不天天施行報應呢?經上說:「神是公義的審判者,又是全能的,並且是恆久忍耐的」;
And why does he not render it every day? 'God is a judge,' it says, 'righteous and strong and long-suffering';
10:122
謙卑的心是美好的;
that humility of mind is a good thing;
10:123
經上說:「耶和華啊,我的心不狂傲」;
'Lord,' it says, 'my heart was not lifted up';
10:124
經上說:「因此,驕傲把他們轄制到底」;
'For this cause,' it says, 'pride laid hold of them to the end';
10:125
又說:「神阻擋驕傲的人」;
and again, 'The Lord sets himself against the proud';
10:126
and again, 'Their iniquity will come forth as from fatness.'
10:127
「他施捨錢財,賙濟貧窮;
'He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor;
10:128
他的公義存到永遠」;
his righteousness endures forever';
10:129
'A good man is he who pities and lends.'
10:130
你在那裡還必尋見許多比這些更多、滿有智慧的教訓;
And many teachings even more numerous than these, full of wisdom, will you find there;
10:131
for instance, that one ought not to speak evil:
10:132
'Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor,' it says, 'him did I drive away.'
10:133
What the hymn of those on high is, what the Cherubim say, the faithful know.
10:134
What did the angels say down below? 'Glory to God in the highest.'
10:135
For this reason, after the psalms come hymns, as being something more perfect.
10:136
'Singing with spiritual songs in grace in your hearts to God.'
10:137
Either he means this, that God gave us these things on account of grace; or with the songs that are in grace; or, admonishing yourselves and teaching one another in grace; or that they possessed these spiritual gifts in grace; or it is a further explanation.
10:138
'From the grace of the Spirit,' he says.
10:139
'Singing in your hearts to God.'
10:140
Not simply with the mouth, he says, but with attentiveness.
10:141
因為這才是向神歌唱,那另一種卻是向空氣歌唱;
For this is to sing to God, but the other is to sing to the air;
10:142
for the voice is simply scattered abroad.
10:143
Even if you are in the marketplace, you are able to collect yourself and to sing to God, with no one hearing.
10:144
因為摩西也是這樣禱告,並且蒙了垂聽;
Since Moses too prayed in this way, and was heard;
10:145
「你為什麼向我哀求呢?」其實他一句話也沒有說,只是懷著痛悔的心在心裡呼求;
'Why do you cry out to me?' And yet he had said nothing, but was crying out in his mind with a contrite heart;
10:146
wherefore God alone heard him.
10:147
For one is not hindered even while walking about from praying in the heart and being on high.
10:148
'And whatever you do,' he says, 'in word or in deed, do all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father through him.'
10:149
For if we act in this way, nothing will be defiled, nothing unclean, wherever Christ is invoked.
10:150
你若吃,你若喝,你若娶妻,你若出外遠行,都要奉神的名而行;
If you eat, if you drink, if you marry, if you travel abroad, do all in the name of God;
10:151
就是說,要呼求祂作你的幫助;
that is, calling him to your aid;
10:152
in all things first praying to him, then lay hold of your affairs.
10:153
Do you wish to utter something? Set this before it.
10:154
For this reason we too place the name of the Lord at the head of our letters.
10:155
Wherever the name of the Lord is, all things are auspicious.
10:156
For if the names of consuls make legal documents secure, much more does the name of Christ.
10:157
無論說話行事,都要照著神的心意;
Say and do all things according to God;
10:158
do not bring in the angels.
10:159
Do you eat? Give thanks to God, both when about to and afterwards.
10:160
Do you sleep? Give thanks to God, both when about to and afterwards.
10:161
你進入市集嗎?也要照樣行;
Do you enter the marketplace? Do the same;
10:162
nothing worldly, nothing pertaining to this life.
10:163
Do all things in the name of the Lord, and all things will prosper for you.
10:164
Wherever the name of God is set upon a thing, all things are auspicious.
10:165
If it casts out demons, if it drives away diseases, much more will it bring about ease in one's affairs.
10:166
And what is it to do 'in word or in deed'? Either in making a request, or in doing anything whatsoever.
10:167
Hear how Abraham sent his servant in the name of God, how David overthrew Goliath in the name of God.
10:168
'Wondrous is his name and great.'
10:169
Again Jacob, sending his sons, says:
10:170
'And may my God give you favour in the sight of the man.'
10:171
For he who does this has God as his ally, without whom he dared to do nothing.
10:172
Therefore, being honoured by being invoked, he will return the honour by making one's affairs go smoothly.
10:173
Call upon the Son, give thanks to the Father.
10:174
For when the Son is called upon, the Father is called upon, and when he is thanked, the Son is thanked.
10:175
Let us learn these things, so as to fulfil them not merely in words but also through our deeds.
10:176
沒有什麼能與這名相比;
Nothing is equal to this name;
10:177
這名在各處都是奇妙的;
it is marvellous everywhere;
10:178
'Your name,' he says, 'is ointment poured forth.'
10:179
He who said this was straightway filled with fragrance.
10:180
'No one can say the Lord Jesus,' he says, 'except in the Holy Spirit.'
10:181
This name accomplishes so many things.
10:182
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, with faith, you have accomplished all things.
10:183
You have created a new man, and you have wrought all the rest from baptism.
10:184
So fearful is the name when it commands diseases.
10:185
For this reason the devil brought in the worship of angels, grudging us this honour.
10:186
Such are the incantations of the demons.
10:187
即或是天使,即或是天使長,即或是基路伯,你都不可容忍;
Even if it be an angel, even if an archangel, even if the Cherubim, do not tolerate it;
10:188
since not even these powers will accept it, but they will even shake it off, when they see the Master dishonoured.
10:189
'I honoured you,' he says, 'and said:
10:190
而你竟輕慢祂嗎?」你若帶著信心誦唱這咒語,就能趕逐疾病與鬼魔;
and do you dishonour him?' If you sing this incantation with faith, you will drive away both diseases and demons;
10:191
and even if you do not drive away the disease, it is not from weakness, but because of what is expedient.
10:192
'According to your greatness,' he says, 'so also is your praise.'
10:193
Through this name the whole world was converted, the tyranny
10:194
was dissolved, the devil was trampled down, the heavens were opened.
10:195
And why do I speak of the heavens? We ourselves were born anew through this name.
10:196
If we possess this, we shine forth.
10:197
這名造就了殉道者,也造就了認信者;
This makes both martyrs and confessors;
10:198
let us hold fast to this as to a great gift, that we may live in glory, and be well-pleasing to God, and be counted worthy of the good things promised to those who love him, by the grace and lovingkindness (of Christ).
