Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, greets you, always striving on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
13:2
For I bear him witness, that he has much zeal for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.
13:3
在書信的起頭,他便是憑著愛心來推薦這人;
And at the beginning of the Epistle, he commended the man from love;
13:4
and love is shown also by his praising him.
13:5
'Who declared to us,' he says, 'your love in the Spirit.'
13:6
To pray earnestly on another's behalf also shows love and makes one beloved.
13:7
And he commends him, opening a door for his word (for that the teacher be held in reverence is a benefit to the disciples), and again by saying 'from you,' that they might take pride in the man, as bringing forth such men.
13:8
'And always,' he says, 'striving on your behalf in his prayers.'
13:9
He did not simply say 'praying,' but 'striving,' trembling and fearful.
13:10
'For I bear him witness,' he says, 'that he has much zeal for you.'
13:11
'That he has,' he says, 'much zeal for you.'
13:12
That is, that he loves you exceedingly, and is inflamed with affection concerning you.
13:13
'And for those in Laodicea,' he says, 'and for those in Hierapolis.'
13:14
He commends him to those also.
13:15
但他們怎能知道這事呢?他們大概是會聽見的;
But how were they to know this? It was likely, then, that they should hear of it;
13:16
moreover, when the Epistle was read, they came to learn it.
13:17
'For see to it,' he says, 'that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans.'
13:18
At once he both censures them, and without giving offense exhorts and counsels them.
13:19
因為一個人可能既是完全的,卻仍站立不穩,好比有人雖然凡事都通曉,卻仍搖動;
For it is possible both to be perfect and yet not to stand firm, as when one knows all things, but is still shaken;
13:20
and it is possible both not to be perfect and yet to stand firm, as when one knows only a part, yet stands, though not securely.
13:21
But he prays for both: 'That you may stand,' he says, 'perfect.'
13:22
See how again he reminded them of the discourse concerning the angels, and concerning the manner of life.
13:23
'And complete,' he says, 'in all the will of God.'
13:24
For it is not simply enough to do the will.
13:25
He who is complete does not allow any other will to be in him, since otherwise he is not fully assured.
13:26
'For I bear him witness,' he says, 'that he has much zeal.'
13:27
正如他寫信給哥林多人時,自己也這樣說;
just as he himself also says, writing to the Corinthians;
13:28
'Luke, the beloved physician, greets you.'
13:29
This is the Evangelist.
13:30
Yet he does not place him afterwards to humble him, but rather to exalt that other man, Epaphras.
13:31
It is likely that there were also others called by this name.
13:32
And having said, 'Luke the physician greets you,' he added, 'the beloved.'
13:33
This too is no small commendation, but indeed a very great one—to be beloved of Paul.
13:34
'Greet the brethren in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church that is in his house.'
13:35
See how he cements and joins them to one another, not only by the greeting, but also by their exchanging the epistles.
13:36
Then again he shows favor, addressing him privately by name.
13:37
And he does this not without purpose, but also to bring the others into the same standing.
13:38
For it is no small thing, when one is not numbered together with the rest.
13:39
See, at any rate, how he shows the man to be great, if indeed his house was a church.
13:40
'And when the epistle is read among you, see to it that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans.'
13:41
It seems to me that there were certain things written there which these also ought to have heard.
13:42
And for these the benefit was the greater, when, others being accused, they should recognize their own sins.
13:43
'And that from Laodicea, that you also may read it.'
13:44
有些人說,這不是保羅寄給他們的那封信,乃是他們寄給保羅的那封信;
Some say that it is not the one sent by Paul to them, but the one sent by them to Paul;
13:45
for he did not say, 'that to the Laodiceans,' but, 'that from Laodicea,' he says, 'the one written.'
13:46
'Take heed to the ministry which you received in the Lord, that you fulfill it.'
13:47
For what reason does he not write to him directly? Perhaps he had no need of it, but only of a bare reminder, so that he might be more diligent.
13:48
'The salutation of Paul with my own hand.'
13:49
This is a token of genuineness and friendship—both to see the very handwriting, and to be moved by it in some way.
13:50
'Remember my bonds.'
13:51
因為這足以激勵他們去行各樣的事,並使他們在爭戰中更加勇敢;
For this was sufficient to urge them on to all things, and to make them more courageous for the contests;
13:52
and not only more courageous, but it also made them more intimately his own.
13:53
It is a great commendation, and greater than all the rest, to say concerning Epaphras, 'who is of you, a servant of Christ.'
13:54
And he calls him a minister on their behalf, just as he also calls himself a minister of the Church, as when he says:
13:55
'of which I, Paul, became a minister.'
13:56
He raises the man to the same dignity, and above calls him a fellow-servant, and here a servant.
13:57
as though conversing with a mother, and saying:
13:58
But this commendation might have engendered envy.
13:59
因這緣故,他不僅憑這些事來推薦他,也憑他對他們所存的心意來推薦他;
For this reason he commends him not only from these things, but also from his relations toward them;
13:60
and both there he dissolves the envy, and here.
13:61
'Always,' he says, 'striving on your behalf'—
13:62
not now only among us, so as to make a display, nor among you only, so as to make a show before you.
13:63
He showed great eagerness by saying this.
13:64
Then, lest he should seem to be flattering them, he added that he 'has much zeal for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.'
13:65
And the phrase, 'That you may stand perfect,' this too is not the mark of flattery, but of a reverend teacher. 'And fully assured,' he says, 'and perfect.'
13:66
The one thing he granted them, but the other he said was still lacking.
13:67
And he did not say, 'That you may not be shaken,' but, 'That you may stand.'
13:68
The fact, moreover, that they are greeted by many wins them over, when not only their own kinsfolk from among them, but others also make mention of them.
13:69
'Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord.'
13:70
Most of all he makes them subject to him.
13:71
因為當他責備他們時,他們就再無可指摘他的餘地了,既然這一切都是他們自己所承擔的;
For they would no longer have grounds to blame him when he rebukes them, since they themselves have undertaken the whole matter;
13:72
since it is not reasonable for disciples to speak concerning their teacher.
13:73
But to stop their mouths, he writes these things.
13:74
'Say to Archippus,' he says, 'Take heed.'
13:75
This word everywhere belongs to one who instills fear, as when he says:
13:76
'See to it that no one takes you captive;'
13:77
'Take heed lest this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.'
13:78
And everywhere he speaks thus when he would inspire fear.
13:79
'Take heed,' he says, 'to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you fulfill it.'
13:80
Nor does he allow him to be his own master, just as he himself used to say:
13:81
「我若甘心作這事,就有賞賜;
'For if I do this willingly, I have a reward;
13:82
but if unwillingly, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.'
13:83
continually employing diligence.
13:84
Πά.
那「在裏」一詞,意思又是「藉著主」;
Again the word 'In,' means 'through the Lord';
13:85
He gave it to you, not we.
13:86
連那些人他也使之順服於他,就是藉著顯明他是從神領受了這職分;
And those others too he makes subject to him, by showing that he has been entrusted with the charge from God;
13:87
'Remember my bonds.'
13:88
For even though the teacher is in bonds, yet grace looses him.
13:89
而這也是恩典的作為——就是容許他被捆綁;
And this too belongs to grace—that it permitted him to be bound;
13:90
for hear Luke saying, that 'The apostles departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy
13:91
to suffer dishonor for His name.'
13:92
For truly it is to be counted worthy, both to suffer dishonor and to be bound.
13:93
For if a man who has a beloved reckons it gain to suffer something for that person's sake, much more is it gain to suffer for Christ's sake.
13:94
所以我們不可為那因基督而來的患難憂煩,倒要我們也記念保羅的捆鎖,並且以此作我們的勉勵;
Let us therefore not be vexed at afflictions for Christ's sake, but let us too remember Paul's bonds, and let this be our encouragement;
13:95
for instance, you exhort certain people to give to the poor for Christ's sake? Remind them of Paul's bonds, and count both yourself and them wretched, if he gave over even his body to bonds for Christ's sake, while you do not so much as share your food.
13:96
Are you lifted up over your good deeds? Remember Paul's bonds, and that you have suffered nothing of the kind, and you will no longer be puffed up.
13:97
Have you coveted your neighbor's goods? Remember Paul's bonds, and you will see how absurd it is that he should be in dangers, while you live in luxury.
13:98
你又渴慕享樂麼?就把保羅的牢獄放在心上;
Have you again longed for luxury? Call to mind Paul's prison;
13:99
you are his disciple, his fellow-soldier.
13:100
How is it reasonable that the fellow-soldier should be in bonds, while you are in luxury? Have you fallen into affliction, and thought yourself forsaken? Hear Paul's words, and you will see that being in affliction is no proof of being forsaken.
13:101
Do you wish to wear silken garments? Remember Paul's bonds, and these will appear to you meaner than filthy rags.
13:102
Do you wish to deck yourself with gold ornaments? Call to mind Paul's bonds, and these will seem to you disposed no better than an old rope.
13:103
Do you wish to arrange your hair and appear beautiful? Think of Paul's squalor in the prison, and you will burn with longing for that beauty, and you will count this the utmost ugliness, and you will groan bitterly, longing for those bonds.
13:104
你想在自己身上塗抹脂粉、描畫眉眼,並一切這類的東西麼?就想想他的眼淚;
Do you wish to put upon yourself paints and eye-liners, and all such things? Think of his tears;
13:105
for three years, night and day, he did not cease from weeping.
13:106
你當用這妝飾來美化你的臉頰;
With this adornment beautify your cheek;
13:107
these tears make it radiant.
13:108
I do not say that you should weep for others (though I would wish this too, but this is beyond you), but I urge you to do this for your own sins.
13:109
你吩咐把僕人捆綁,並且動了怒氣、大受激動麼?就記念保羅的捆鎖,你立刻便要止住你的怒氣;
Have you ordered a servant to be bound, and grown angry and provoked? Remember Paul's bonds, and at once you will still your anger;
13:110
call to mind that we belong to those who are bound, not to those who bind; to those whose heart is broken, not to those who break others.
13:111
你放肆大笑、笑得無度麼?就思想他的哀歎,你便要歎息了;
Have you burst out and laughed aloud immoderately? Take thought of his lamentations, and you will groan;
13:112
these tears show you far more radiant.
13:113
Have you seen people living luxuriously and dancing? Remember his tears.
13:114
What fountain gushed forth so many streams as those eyes did tears? 'Remember,' he says, 'my tears,' just as here he says 'my bonds.'
13:115
他向那些人這樣說,是有充分理由的,就是在他把他們從以弗所召到米利都的時候;
And with good reason he said this to those men, at the time when he summoned them from Ephesus to Miletus;
13:116
so that from those men he requires even the gathering together, but from these only that they should face danger.
13:117
你要拿甚麼泉源來與這些眼淚相比?是那在樂園中、澆灌全地的泉源麼?但你必說沒有一樣能與它相比;
What fountain would you compare with these tears? The one in Paradise, which watered all the earth? But you will call nothing equal to it;
13:118
for this fountain of tears watered souls, not earth.
13:119
若有人指給我們看保羅在流淚歎息,這豈不比觀看無數戴著華冠、喜氣洋洋的歌詠隊還要好得多麼?我不是說你們;
If someone showed us Paul weeping and groaning, would it not be far better to behold than countless choirs brightly crowned? I do not speak of you;
13:120
but if someone were to drag away from the theater and the stage one of the licentious, one inflamed and frenzied with the love of bodies, and were to show him a virgin maiden in the very flower of her age, surpassing her peers in all else, and in her countenance above the rest of her members, having a tender and soft eye set gently, turning gently, moist, mild, calmly smiling, encompassed with much modesty and much grace, crowned above and below with dark lashes, having, so to speak, a living pupil, her brow shining, and below again her cheek
13:121
泛著恰到好處的紅潤,光滑如同鋪陳其下的大理石,且勻稱平整;
coming to a perfect ruddiness, smooth like marble laid beneath, and even;
13:122
然後他若指給我看保羅在流淚,我必撇下那女子,躍身趨向觀看保羅;
and then he showed me Paul weeping, I would let her go and leap up to the sight of him;
13:123
for a spiritual beauty shone forth from those eyes.
13:124
因為那一種美使少年人的魂魄失常,點燃他們、使他們如火焚燒;
For the one causes the souls of the young to lose their senses, inflames and sets them ablaze;
13:125
but this, on the contrary, calms them down.
13:126
He who looks upon these eyes makes the eye of his soul more beautiful, subdues the belly, fills himself with wisdom and with much compassion, and is able to soften even an adamantine soul.
13:127
教會是靠這些得澆灌,人的魂是靠這些眼淚得栽種;
By these the Church is watered, by these tears souls are planted;
13:128
縱然有火,這些眼淚也能熄滅它,無論是有形的、屬肉身的火;
even if there be fire, these tears can quench it, both sensible and bodily fire;
13:129
these tears quench the fiery darts of the Evil One.
13:130
Let us therefore remember his tears, and we shall laugh to scorn all things present.
13:131
These were the tears that Christ pronounced blessed, when He said:
13:132
'Blessed are they that mourn, and blessed are they that weep, for they shall laugh.'
13:133
以賽亞和耶利米所流的,也正是這樣的眼淚;
Such also were the tears that Isaiah and Jeremiah shed;
13:134
'Leave me alone, I will weep bitterly.'
13:135
'Who will give water to my head, and to my eyes fountains of tears?'—as though the natural spring did not suffice.
13:136
沒有甚麼比這樣的眼淚更甘美的了;
Nothing is sweeter than these tears;
13:137
these are sweeter than any laughter.
13:138
They that mourn know how great a consolation the thing brings.
13:139
Let us not deem it a thing to be shunned, but rather greatly to be desired.
13:140
Not that others should sin, but that, when they do sin, we should be broken with grief over them—let us remember these tears, these bonds.
13:141
如此看來,甚至在捆鎖之中,眼淚也不斷流下;
So then, even amid his bonds tears flowed down;
13:142
yet the death of those who were perishing—those who bound him—did not permit him to feel the delight arising from the bonds.
13:143
因為他是為著他們憂傷;
For he grieved on their behalf;
13:144
for he was a disciple of Him who wept over the priests of the Jews—not because they were about to crucify Him, but because they themselves were perishing.
13:145
And He does not do this alone, but also exhorts others so to do, saying:
13:146
'Weep not for Me, ye daughters of Jerusalem.'
13:147
這雙眼睛曾看見樂園,曾看見第三層天;
These eyes beheld Paradise, they beheld the third heaven;
13:148
yet I do not count them blessed on account of that vision so much as on account of those tears, through which he beheld Christ.
13:149
這確實是真正有福的事;
This indeed was truly a blessed thing;
13:150
for he himself also glories in it, saying:
13:151
'Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord?' Yet more blessed is it to have wept in this way.
13:152
Many have shared in that vision; yet those who did not share it Christ again pronounces blessed, saying:
13:153
'Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed;'
13:154
but of this thing not many have attained.
13:155
For if to remain here for Christ's sake is more needful than to depart to Him, because of the salvation of others, then also to groan for their sake is more needful than to see Him.
13:156
For if to be for His sake in hell is more to be longed for than to be with Him, and to be separated from Him for His sake is more to be longed for than to be together with Him (for this is what he meant when he said:
13:157
'I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ')—
13:158
much more, then, is it desirable to weep for His sake.
13:159
'I ceased not,' he says, 'to admonish every one with tears.'
13:160
為甚麼呢?並非因為他懼怕危險;
Why so? Not because he feared the dangers;
13:161
乃是好像一個坐在病人旁邊、不知結局如何的人,因著愛而流淚,惟恐病人失去性命;
but just as one sitting beside a sick man, not knowing the end, might weep out of affection, fearing lest he fall from life;
13:162
so also he himself, whenever he saw one who was sick, and had not the strength to rebuke him, would thereupon weep.
13:163
基督也照樣行,為要叫人至少因祂的眼淚而生敬畏之心;
This Christ also did, that at least they might reverence His tears;
13:164
譬如,有人犯了罪嗎?祂便加以責備;
for instance, did someone sin? He rebuked;
13:165
did the one rebuked spurn Him and leap away? He wept, that thus at least He might draw him back.
13:166
讓我們記念這樣的眼淚;
Let us remember these tears;
13:167
thus let us bring up our own daughters, thus our sons, weeping whenever we see them in evil courses.
13:168
凡願意得人喜愛的婦女,都當記念保羅的眼淚,並要歎息;
Let all women who wish to be loved remember the tears of Paul, and let them groan;
13:169
你們這些被稱為有福的,你們這些在新房中的,你們這些活在宴樂中的,都當記念這些事;
you who are counted blessed, you who are in bridal chambers, you who live in pleasure, remember these things;
13:170
mourn, exchange tears for tears.
13:171
That man mourned not for the dead, but for those who were perishing though yet alive.
13:172
我還要提說別的眼淚嗎?提摩太也曾哭泣;
Shall I speak of yet other tears? Timothy also wept;
13:173
wherefore also, writing to him, he said:
13:174
'Being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy.'
13:175
Many also weep out of joy.
13:176
如此,這事也是屬於喜樂的,而且是達於極致的喜樂;
So too this thing is a matter of pleasure, and indeed of pleasure heightened to the utmost;
13:177
thus the tears that come from such sorrow are not burdensome, but are far better than those shed for worldly pleasure.
13:178
Hear the Prophet saying:
13:179
'The Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.'
13:180
For where is the tear not profitable? In prayers, in exhortations? But we misuse them, employing them for that for which they were not given.
13:181
當我們勸戒一個犯罪的弟兄時,就當流淚,捶胸歎息;
When we admonish a brother who is sinning, we ought to weep, smiting the breast and groaning;
13:182
when we exhort someone, and he heeds not, but is perishing, we ought to weep.
13:183
這些才是屬乎真智慧的眼淚;
These are the tears of true wisdom;
13:184
但當有人變為貧窮,當他身患疾病,當他死去時——就不再是如此了;
but when someone becomes poor, when he is in bodily sickness, when he dies—no longer so;
13:185
for these things are not worthy of tears.
13:186
所以,正如我們因不合時宜地使用歡笑而濫用了它;
Just, therefore, as we abuse laughter by using it out of season;
13:187
so also tears, when we employ them out of season.
13:188
γὰρ.
因為每一樣事物的美德,惟有在它被用於合宜的工作時才顯明出來;
For the virtue of each thing is then made manifest, when it is directed to its proper work;
13:189
but when it is directed to what is foreign to it, no longer.
13:190
譬如,酒是為叫人歡暢而賜的,卻不是為叫人醉酒;
For instance, wine is given for gladness, but not for drunkenness;
13:191
bread for nourishment, intercourse for the begetting of children.
13:192
As, then, these things are abused when misused, so also are tears.
13:193
當立下一條律例,只在禱告與勸勉中運用這些眼淚;
Let a law be laid down, to use these only in prayers and in exhortations;
13:194
and see how the thing will even become desirable.
13:195
Nothing so wipes away sins as tears.
13:196
眼淚甚至使人這屬肉體的面容顯為美麗;
And tears make even this bodily countenance fair;
13:197
for it draws the beholder to compassion, and renders it dignified in our eyes.
13:198
Nothing is sweeter than eyes that have wept.
13:199
For this is the nobler member in us, and the fairer, and it belongs to the soul.
13:200
Inasmuch, therefore, as we behold, as it were, the very soul lamenting, we are thus moved to compassion.
13:201
These things have not been said to you without purpose, but that you should not take part in weddings, in dances, or in satanic revels.
13:202
For consider what the devil has devised.
13:203
Since nature itself kept women away from the stage and from the indecencies enacted there, he brought the things of the theatre into the women's quarters—I mean effeminate men and harlots.
13:204
這樣的敗壞,竟是藉著婚姻的規例引進來的;
This ruin the law of marriage has brought in;
13:205
or rather not the law of marriage—God forbid—but our own folly.
13:206
What are you doing, O man? You do not know what you are about.
13:207
你娶妻,是為著貞潔與生養兒女;
You take a wife for the sake of chastity and the bearing of children;
13:208
what then do the harlots want there? That the merriment, he says, may become greater.
13:209
And is this not sheer madness? You insult the bride, you insult the women who have been invited.
13:210
For if they take pleasure in such things, the affair is an outrage.
13:211
If to see harlot women behaving shamelessly brings some sense of honour, why do you not also drag in the bride, that she too may look on? It is altogether unseemly and disgraceful to bring effeminate men and dancers, and the whole satanic pomp, into one's house.
13:212
Remember my bonds, he says.
13:213
婚姻是一種捆綁,是神所命定的捆綁;
Marriage is a bond, a bond ordained by God;
13:214
the harlot is a loosing and a dissolution.
13:215
你儘可用別的方式使婚禮增添光彩,例如豐盛的筵席與華美的衣裳;
It is permitted to make the wedding bright by other means, such as laden tables and garments;
13:216
我並不禁絕這些,免得顯得我過於嚴苛;
I do not cut these things off, lest I should seem to be exceedingly harsh;
13:217
and yet for Rebecca a veil alone sufficed.
13:218
It is permitted to be made bright with garments, it is permitted with the presence of venerable men and venerable women.
13:219
Why do you bring in those mockeries, why those monstrous things? Tell me the words you hear from them.
13:220
但你羞於啟齒麼?你自己都覺羞恥,卻還逼別人去作麼?這事若是好的,你為何不自己去作?若是可恥的,你又為何逼別人去作?凡事都當充滿貞潔,充滿莊重,充滿端雅;
But do you blush to speak them? You blush, and yet you compel those others to do them? If it is good, why do you not do it yourself too? But if it is shameful, why do you compel another? All things ought to be full of chastity, full of gravity, full of decorum;
13:221
but now I see the opposite: men leaping about like camels, like mules.
13:222
For the virgin, the bridal chamber alone is fitting.
13:223
她既是貧寒的,就更當是端莊的;
Since she is poor, she ought also to be modest;
13:224
let her have good character in place of wealth.
13:225
你為何又藉著她的行為,使她在另一方面遭人輕看呢?我稱許眾童女前來尊敬她們的同輩,也稱許眾婦女前來尊敬這位被引進她們中間的新人;
Why do you also make her contemptible in another way by her conduct? I commend it that virgins come to honour their peer, that married women come to honour her who is now brought into their company;
13:226
因為這裏有兩隊人:一隊是童女,一隊是已婚的婦女;
for these are two choirs, that of the virgins and that of the married women;
13:227
the one gives her over, the others receive her.
13:228
新娘正處於這兩者之間,既非童女,亦非婦人;
The bride is between these, neither virgin nor wife;
13:229
for from the one company she goes forth,
13:230
and enters upon that other band.
13:231
But the harlots—why? When it is fitting for them to hide themselves whenever there is a wedding, when it is fitting for them to be buried out of sight (for whoredom is the destruction of marriage), we, on the contrary, lead them into weddings.
13:232
每逢你作一件事,甚至連一句口彩,你都留意避開那不吉利的兆頭;
And whenever you do anything, you take omens against the contrary even down to a word;
13:233
譬如,你撒種的時候,或從酒醡中舀取新酒的時候,凡是預示酒變酸的話,你連提都不肯提;
for instance, when you sow, or when you draw off the wine from the vats, you would not so much as utter the things that betoken sour wine;
13:234
yet here, where chastity is at issue, do you bring in the sour wine? For that is what the harlot is.
13:235
你調製香膏的時候,斷不容任何發臭之物挨近;
When you are preparing perfume, you let nothing foul-smelling come near;
13:236
那麼你為何把污泥的惡臭引進香膏的調製中呢?你說甚麼?童女竟起舞,在她的同輩面前也不覺羞恥麼?她原當比新娘更為莊重才是;
why then do you bring in the stench of the mire into the making of the perfume? What do you say? Does the virgin dance, and is she not ashamed before her peer? For she ought to be more dignified than the bride;
13:237
for she has come forth from her mother's arms, not from the wrestling-school.
13:238
For the virgin ought not to appear at weddings at all.
13:239
Do you not see in the royal palaces that those who are held in honour are within, near the king, but the dishonoured are without? You too be within, near the bride.
13:240
只要在家中保守純潔;
But remain pure within the house;
13:241
do not parade your virginity abroad.
13:242
兩隊人各自站立:一隊顯明她們所交付的是何等的女子,另一隊則好如此看守她;
Each choir stands by: the one to show what kind of woman they are giving over, the other that they may guard her thus;
13:243
你為何羞辱童貞呢?因為你若是這樣的女子,新郎也必對她起同樣的疑心;
why do you put virginity to shame? For if you are such a one, the bridegroom will suspect the like about her as well;
13:244
if you wish to be loved, such behaviour belongs to a huckster-woman, a vegetable-seller, a common workwoman.
13:245
Are these things not a disgrace? Disgrace is to behave unseemly, even though one be a king's daughter.
13:246
難道貧窮攔阻這事麼?難道所操的職業攔阻麼?縱然一個童女是婢女,也讓她安住在貞潔之中;
For does poverty hinder it? Does one's occupation? Even if a virgin be a slave, let her abide in chastity;
13:247
for in Christ Jesus there is neither slave nor free.
13:248
難道婚姻是戲臺麼?它乃是一個奧祕,是一件偉大事物的預表;
For is marriage a theatre? It is a mystery, and a figure of a great reality;
13:249
and even if you do not reverence marriage itself, reverence that of which it is a figure.
13:250
他說,這是極大的奧祕;
This mystery, he says, is great;
13:251
but I speak concerning Christ and the Church.
13:252
婚姻既是教會與基督的預表,你竟引進娼妓麼?他說,那麼,童女不可跳舞,已婚的婦女也不可跳舞,誰還可跳舞呢?誰也不可;
It is a figure of the Church and of Christ, and do you bring in harlots? If then, he says, neither virgins are to dance, nor married women, who shall dance? No one;
13:253
for what need is there of dancing? In the mysteries of the Greeks there are dances, but in ours there is silence and good order, modesty and self-restraint.
13:254
Away with the harlots, away with the profane!
13:255
How is it a mystery? They come together, and the two make one.
13:256
為甚麼當她進來的時候,沒有舞蹈,沒有鈸聲,只有極大的靜默與極深的安寧;
Why is it that, when she was entering, there was no dance, no cymbals, but much silence and much stillness;
13:257
yet when they come together—making not a lifeless image, nor an image of any earthly thing, but of God Himself—you bring in such an uproar, and disturb those present, and put the soul to shame, and cause a tumult? They come to become one body.
13:258
Behold again a mystery of love.
13:259
這二人若不成為一,就不能生養眾多,只要他們仍是兩個,便是如此;
If the two do not become one, they do not produce many, so long as they remain two;
13:260
but when they come into unity, then they are fruitful.
13:261
What do we learn from this? That great is the strength of union.
13:262
The resourceful wisdom of God divided the one into two at the beginning, and, wishing to show that even after being divided he remains one, He did not allow one alone to suffice for procreation.
13:263
因為那尚且單獨的一個,並不是一個完整的人,乃是一個的一半;
For the one who is as yet alone is not one, but half of the one;
13:264
and it is plain that he does not beget children, just as neither did he before.
13:265
你看見婚姻的奧祕了麼?神從一個造出一個,又再一次把這兩個造成一個,如此使他們成為一;
Have you seen the mystery of marriage? He made one out of one, and again, having made these two one, He so makes them one;
13:266
so that even now a human being is born out of one.
13:267
因為女人和男人並非兩個人,乃是一個人;
For woman and man are not two human beings, but one human being;
13:268
and it is possible to confirm this from many quarters—for instance from Jacob, from Mary the mother of Christ, from the saying:
13:269
Male and female He made them.
13:270
If the one is head and the other is body, how are they two? For this reason the one belongs to the disciple's station.
13:271
他佔有教師的地位;
He holds the rank of a teacher;
13:272
the one has the place of him who rules, the other of her who is ruled.
13:273
And from the very fashioning of the body one may see that they are one; for she came into being from his side, and the two are, as it were, halves of one whole.
13:274
正因如此,祂也稱她為幫助者,好顯明他們原是一體;
For this reason too He calls her a helper, that He might show that they are one;
13:275
for this reason too He sets their dwelling together above father and mother, that He might show that they are one.
13:276
父親也同樣,無論是女兒或兒子出嫁娶親,都一樣歡喜,彷彿身體正朝著自己本有的肢體奔去;
And the father likewise rejoices when either a daughter or a son marries, as though the body were pressing on toward a member proper to itself;
13:277
and so great is the expense and the diminishing of wealth, and yet he does not endure to look on and see the child remain unmarried.
13:278
For as though the flesh had been rent away from him, each of the two is incomplete for the begetting of children, each is incomplete for the ordering of this present life.
13:279
For this reason the prophet also says:
13:280
But how do they also become one flesh? Just as if you take the purest part of gold and mingle it with other gold, so also here: the woman, receiving the richest part of the pleasure as it is fused together, nourishes and cherishes it, and contributing her own share, gives back a man.
13:281
And the child is a kind of bridge.
13:282
So that the three become one flesh, the child joining the two on either side.
13:283
因為正如有兩座城,中間有一條河將它們一路分開,當一座橋兩端把它們連接起來,它們便成為一城;
For just as, if there were two cities and a river dividing them throughout, they become one city when a bridge touches them on either side,
13:284
這裡的情形正是如此,甚至更甚;
so is it here, and even more;
13:285
for the bridge itself is formed out of the substance of them both.
13:286
在這一點上他們是一體的,正如身體與頭是一個身體;
And in this respect they are one, as the body and the head are one body;
13:287
因為它們是被頸項所分開的;
for they are divided by the neck;
13:288
然而它們與其說是被分開,不如說是被連合起來;
yet they are not so much divided as they are joined together;
13:289
for being in the middle, it brings both together.
13:290
所發生的,就好像一隊被拆散的歌舞班,若從這邊取來它的一部分,從右邊取來另一部分,便使之合成一隊;
And the same thing comes to pass as if a chorus that had been pulled apart should, taking its one part from this side and the other from the right, make one;
13:291
又好像這些互相靠攏、伸出雙手的人,便合成一體;
or as these persons who are drawn together and stretch out their hands become one;
13:292
for the hands, being stretched out, do not allow them to be two.
13:293
For this reason, then, He spoke precisely, not, 'They shall be one flesh,' but, 'Into one flesh,' being joined together, that is, into that of the child.
13:294
那麼,若沒有孩子,他們豈不就仍是二人麼?顯然不是;
What then, when there is no child, will they not even then be two? It is quite evident that they will not;
13:295
for the union effects this, having poured together and commingled the bodies of both.
13:296
And just as one who casts perfume into oil has made the whole one, so also here.
13:297
我知道許多人為所講的這些話感到羞恥;
I know that many are ashamed at the things being said;
13:298
and the cause of this is licentiousness and unbridled behavior.
13:299
婚姻竟以這樣的方式進行、竟被敗壞,這事使婚姻蒙受了毀謗;
The fact that marriages are contracted in this way, that they are corrupted, has brought the matter into disrepute;
13:300
since 'Marriage is honorable, and the bed undefiled.'
13:301
Why are you ashamed of what is honorable? Why do you blush at what is undefiled? These are the ways of heretics, these are the ways of those who bring in harlots.
13:302
For this reason I wish to purge it thoroughly, so as to lead it back to its own nobility, so as to stop the mouths of the heretics.
13:303
神的恩賜、我們得以出生的根源,竟遭凌辱;
The gift of God has been outraged, the root of our coming into being;
13:304
for there is much dung and filth about the root.
13:305
Let us therefore purge this by our discourse.
13:306
Bear with me, then, a little, since even he who holds filth endures the foul smell.
13:307
我願指明,人不該為這些事感到羞恥,倒該為你們所行的那些事感到羞恥;
I wish to show that one ought not to be ashamed at these things, but at those things which you do;
13:308
然而你卻放下了為那些事羞恥,反倒為這些事羞恥;
but you, letting go of being ashamed at those things, are ashamed at these;
13:309
therefore you condemn God, who ordained it thus.
13:310
Shall I tell how it is also a mystery of the Church?
13:311
Christ came to the Church, and was born of her, and entered into union with her in a spiritual fellowship.
13:312
'For I have espoused you,' he says, 'to one husband, a chaste virgin.'
13:313
And that we are of Him, hear how he says:
13:314
'Of His members, and of His flesh are we all.'
13:315
Considering therefore all these things, let us not put to shame so great a mystery.
13:316
Marriage is a type of the presence of Christ, and do you get drunk? Tell me, if you saw an image of the king, would you dishonor it? By no means.
13:317
The things that are done about a marriage seem indeed to be matters of indifference, but they are causes of great evils.
13:318
'Let filthiness, and foolish talking, and jesting not proceed,' he says, 'out of your mouth.'
13:319
而那一切事——淫穢的話、愚妄的話、戲笑的話——並不是隨隨便便的,乃是變本加厲的;
And all those things—filthiness and foolish talking and jesting—not merely, but with intensity;
13:320
因為這事已成了一門技藝,對於那些從事它的人還有大大的稱讚;
for the thing has become an art, and there are great praises for those who pursue it;
13:321
sins have become an art.
13:322
我們追求這些罪,不是隨便的,乃是殷勤地、精熟地;
We do not pursue them simply, but with diligence, with expertise;
13:323
and thenceforth the devil commands his own battalions.
13:324
Where there is filthy speech, the devil is present, bringing in the things that are his own.
13:325
Being feasted with these things, tell me, do you celebrate the mystery of Christ, and yet call in the devil? Perhaps you think me burdensome.
13:326
For this too belongs to the great perversion, that even he who rebukes incurs laughter as being austere.
13:327
Do you not hear Paul saying, 'Whatsoever you do, whether you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God'? But you do it to the dishonoring and disgracing of it.
13:328
Do you not hear the Prophet saying, 'Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice unto Him with trembling'? But you dissipate yourselves.
13:329
難道就不能既得享樂又存著穩妥麼?你願意聽美妙的歌麼?最好其實根本不必;
For is it not possible both to take delight and to do so with safety? Do you wish to hear beautiful songs? Best of all indeed it were not even needful;
13:330
然而,你若願意,我也遷就;
nevertheless I condescend, if you wish;
13:331
only do not hear the satanic songs, but the spiritual ones.
13:332
Do you wish to see dancers? Behold the chorus of the angels.
13:333
有人說:「怎麼可能看得見他們呢?」你若把這些東西趕走,基督也必來到這婚筵中;
'And how is it possible,' one says, 'to see them?' If you drive these things away, Christ also will come to this wedding;
13:334
and Christ being present, the chorus of the angels is present also.
13:335
你若願意,祂如今也必行奇事,正如祂當日所行的一樣;
If you are willing, He will work wonders even now, just as He did then;
13:336
祂如今也必叫水變為酒;
He will make the water wine even now;
13:337
and, what is far more wonderful, He will turn about the dissoluteness, the desire that flows away and is cold, and will translate it into the spiritual.
13:338
This is to make wine out of water.
13:339
哪裡有吹笛的人,基督就絕不在那裡;
Where there are flute-players, Christ is nowhere present;
13:340
but even if He should enter, He first casts these out, and then works His wonders.
13:341
What is more distasteful than the pomp of Satan, where all is inarticulate, where all is meaningless? And if there be anything articulate, again all is shameful, all is loathsome.
13:342
Nothing is sweeter than virtue, nothing more delightful than decorum, nothing more to be desired than gravity of soul.
13:343
Let a man celebrate weddings such as I describe, and he shall behold true pleasure.
13:344
But what sort of weddings? Give heed.
13:345
First of all, seek for the maiden a husband who is truly a man and a protector, as one who is about to set a head upon a body — as one about to hand over to him not a slave, but a daughter.
13:346
Do not seek wealth, nor splendour of lineage, nor greatness of country; all these things are superfluous. Rather seek reverence of soul, gentleness, true prudence, and the fear of God, if you wish your little daughter to live in gladness.
13:347
For if you seek a wealthier husband, you will not only fail to benefit her, but will even harm her, making her a slave instead of a free woman.
13:348
For she will not reap so much pleasure from his gold as she will bitterness from her servitude.
13:349
But do not seek these things; rather seek above all one of equal standing.
13:350
But if that be not possible, seek one poorer rather than more affluent — that is, if you wish to give your daughter to a husband, and not to sell her to a master.
13:351
When you have carefully examined the man's virtue and are about to give her in marriage, call upon Christ to be present.
13:352
It is a mystery of His presence.
13:353
Most of all, then, even at that time make your entreaty, that He may grant such a suitor.
13:354
Do not become worse than the servant of Abraham, who, when sent upon so great a journey, knew whither he must have recourse.
13:355
When you take pains and search out the husband, pray.
13:356
Say: 'Whomsoever Thou wilt, do Thou dispose.'
13:357
Entrust to Him the matter, and being honoured by you with this honour, He will requite you.
13:358
Two things, then, must you do: both entrust it to Him, and seek such a one as He Himself would wish — orderly and self-controlled.
13:359
When therefore you make the wedding, do not go about the houses borrowing mirrors and garments.
13:360
For the matter is not for display, nor are you leading your little daughter forth into a pageant.
13:361
But rather, brightening your house with what you have, call in neighbours and friends and kinsfolk.
13:362
As many as you know to be seemly, these call, and exhort them to be content with what is provided.
13:363
Let none from the theatre be present.
13:364
For there the expense is superfluous and vain.
13:365
Call Christ before all others.
13:366
Do you know by whom you shall call Him? 'Whosoever,' He says, 'shall do it to one of these least, has done it unto Me.'
13:367
Do not think it a disagreeable thing to invite the poor for Christ's sake.
13:368
Disagreeable it is to invite harlots.
13:369
For to invite the poor — this is an occasion of wealth, but that other, of ruin.
13:370
Adorn the bride, not with these ornaments of gold, but with gentleness and modesty and her accustomed garments; instead of all adornment of gold and braided tresses, put upon her blushing and bashfulness, and the refusal to desire such things.
13:371
Let there be no uproar, no confusion.
13:372
Let the bridegroom be called; let him receive the maiden.
13:373
Let the meals and suppers be full, not of drunkenness, but of spiritual pleasure.
13:374
For from such a wedding numberless good things will come, and the affairs of life will stand in security.
13:375
But from the weddings now celebrated (if indeed one ought to call them weddings, and not rather pageants), see how many are the evils.
13:376
The bridal chambers are broken up, and straightway comes anxiety and fear lest anything of the borrowed things should be lost; and an unbearable dejection succeeds the pleasure.
13:377
But this indeed is the agony of the mother-in-law.
13:378
Or rather, not even the bride herself has been set free.
13:379
For all that comes after belongs to the bride herself.
13:380
For to behold all things dismantled is a ground of dejection; to behold the house left empty is an occasion of downcast gloom.
13:381
There is Christ, here is Satan.
13:382
There is cheerfulness, here is care.
13:383
There is pleasure, here is grief.
13:384
There is expense, here nothing of the sort; there is unseemliness, here is good order.
13:385
There is envy, here is freedom from grudging.
13:386
There is drunkenness, here is sobriety; here is salvation, here is self-control.
13:387
Considering, then, all these things, let us set a stop to the evil at this point, that we may please God and be counted worthy to attain the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, to the Father together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of the ages. Amen.
