Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
12:2
Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
12:3
What Christ said to the disciples, this also Paul now exhorts.
12:4
And what did Christ say? 'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves.'
12:5
'Be therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.'
12:6
That is, be guarded, giving them no handle against you.
12:7
For on this account he adds, 'Toward them that are without,' that we may learn that toward our own members we need not so much caution as toward those without.
12:8
For where there are brethren, there are also many pardonings and acts of love.
12:9
在此固然也當有謹慎,但在外人面前尤當加倍;
There ought indeed to be caution here also, but far more without;
12:10
for it is not the same thing to be among enemies and foes, and among friends.
12:11
Then, since he had frightened them, see how again he encourages them.
12:12
他說:「愛惜光陰」;
'Redeeming the time,' he says;
12:13
that is, the present time is short.
12:14
他並非要他們變得反覆多端,也不是要他們作假冒為善的人;
not wishing them to be shifty, nor hypocrites;
12:15
因為這不是智慧,而是愚妄;
for this is not of wisdom, but of folly;
12:16
那麼是甚麼呢?他說:在那些他們不能傷害你們的事上,不要給他們留下任何把柄;
but what then? In the things wherein they do you no hurt, he says, give them no handle;
12:17
which also, writing to the Romans, he says:
12:18
'Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due;'
12:19
'Let your warfare be for the sake of the preaching alone,' he says;
12:20
let this warfare take no other beginning.
12:21
因為他們若也為別的緣故憎恨我們,我們就得不著賞賜,他們自身也要變得更壞,並且顯得對我們的控告是有理的;
For if they should come to hate us for other reasons too, there will be no reward for us, and they themselves will become worse, and will seem to bring just charges against us;
12:22
as, for instance, if we do not pay the taxes, if we do not render the honors that are due, if we are not lowly.
12:23
Do you not see Paul, where the preaching was in no way hurt, how he is yielding? Hear him then saying to Agrippa:
12:24
'I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before you, especially as you are expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews.'
12:25
But if he had thought it necessary to insult the ruler, he would have overturned everything.
12:26
And hear too concerning those with the blessed Peter, how meekly they answer the Jews, saying:
12:27
'We ought to obey God rather than men.'
12:28
然而,這些人雖已置生死於度外,本可以既加以侮辱,又肆意妄為;
And yet, being men who had despaired of their own life, they were able both to insult and to do anything whatsoever;
12:29
但他們置生死於度外,並非為要炫耀虛榮(因那才是屬乎虛榮的事),乃是為要傳道,並為要放膽宣講一切;
but for this reason they despaired of their life, not that they might indulge vainglory (for this belongs to vainglory), but that they might preach, and that they might utter all things with boldness;
12:30
but that other course belongs to excess.
12:31
'Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt;'
12:32
that is, let the graciousness not fall away into indifference.
12:33
For it is possible both to be gracious, and possible to do this with the becoming decorum.
12:34
'That you may know how you ought to answer each one.'
12:35
So that one must not converse with all in the same way, I mean with Greeks and with brethren.
12:36
since this belongs to the utmost folly.
12:37
'All my affairs shall Tychicus make known unto you, the beloved brother, and faithful minister, and fellow-servant in the Lord.'
12:38
他為何不將一切都寫在書信裡,只寫必要與急迫的事呢?第一,因他不願把書信寫得太長;
How is it that he does not put everything into the letters, but only the necessary and pressing matters? First, because he did not wish to extend them to great length;
12:39
第二,也是要使那前去的人更受敬重,好叫他有些事可以述說;
and secondly, also making the one who was setting out more respected, that he might have something to relate;
12:40
第三,藉此顯明他對那人的看重之情;
thirdly, showing how he is disposed toward him;
12:41
for otherwise he would not have entrusted these things to him.
12:42
Then, there were things which ought not to be disclosed by letters.
12:43
'The beloved,' he says, 'brother.'
12:44
If beloved, he knows all things, and nothing did he hide from him.
12:45
'And a faithful minister and fellow-servant in the Lord.'
12:46
既是忠心的,他就毫無虛謊;
If faithful, he will lie in nothing;
12:47
if a fellow-servant, he has shared in the trials.
12:48
And so from every side he gathered together for him what would win their confidence.
12:49
'Whom I have sent to you for this very purpose.'
12:50
在此他顯明他極大的愛,因為正是為了這緣故他才差遣了他,而這也正是他遠行的原由;
Here he shows his great love, seeing that it was for this reason that he sent him, and that this was the cause of his journey abroad;
12:51
which is also what he said in writing to the Thessalonians:
12:52
'Wherefore, when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone, and sent Timothy our brother.'
12:53
他也把這同一個人差遣到以弗所人那裏去,並且是為了同樣的緣故;
And to the Ephesians also he sends this same man, and for the same reason;
12:54
'That he might know,' he says, 'your affairs, and might comfort your hearts.'
12:55
並不是要你們明白我的光景,而是要我明白你們的光景;
Not that you might learn my affairs, but that I might learn yours;
12:56
thus nowhere does he put his own interest first.
12:57
He shows that they too were amid trials by saying:
12:58
'That he might comfort your hearts.'
12:59
'With Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.'
12:60
'They shall make known to you all things that are done here.'
12:61
This is that Onesimus concerning whom, in writing to Philemon, he said:
12:62
「我本來有意將他留在我身邊,叫他在我為福音所受的捆鎖中替你伺候我;
'Whom I would have retained with me, that in your stead he might minister to me in the bonds of the Gospel;
12:63
but without your consent I would do nothing.'
12:64
And he adds too a word of praise for the city, that they might even take pride in it, and not merely not be ashamed.
12:65
'They shall make known to you all things that are done here.'
12:66
'Aristarchus my fellow-prisoner salutes you.'
12:67
There is no praise greater than this.
12:68
This is he who was brought up with him from Jerusalem.
12:69
他把這人稱為比眾先知更大;
He called this man greater than the prophets;
12:70
for they indeed called themselves strangers and sojourners,
12:71
but this one he calls even a captive.
12:72
For just like a captive, so was he led about and carried off, and lay exposed to all for ill-treatment, or rather even worse than they.
12:73
因為就被擄的人而言,仇敵一旦擄了他們,此後便待之以極大的照顧,因為他們是把他們當作自己的產業來看顧的;
For as to captives, once the enemy have taken them, they thenceforth treat them with much care, inasmuch as they look after them as their own possessions;
12:74
but this man all men led about and carried off as though he were a foe and an enemy, flaying, scourging, insulting, slandering him.
12:75
這對那些弟兄也是一種安慰;
This too was a consolation to those brethren;
12:76
for whenever the teacher himself is in such straits, the disciples are the more encouraged.
12:77
'And Mark, the cousin of Barnabas.'
12:78
他暫且也是憑著親屬的關係來稱讚這人的;
This man too he commended for the present from his kinship;
12:79
for Barnabas was a great man.
12:80
「他若到了你們那裏,你們要接待他。」為甚麼這樣說呢?難道他們若沒有這話就不接待他嗎?他們原是接待的;
'If he come to you, receive him.' Why so? Did they not receive him even apart from this? Yes;
12:81
他卻說:「但我願你們以極大的殷勤來接待他」;
'but I wish it done with much diligence,' he says;
12:82
and this too shows the man to be great.
12:83
Whence they received the commandments, he does not say.
12:84
'And Jesus, who is called Justus.'
12:85
然後,他在說出每一個人各自的特點之後,向眾人獻上一句共同的稱讚;
Then he renders to all a common word of praise, after stating what was peculiar to each;
12:86
'these only are my fellow-workers unto the kingdom of God, who have been a comfort to me.'
12:87
因為他曾說「與我一同坐監」,恐怕使聽者的心靈消沉,你看他怎樣安置這句話,並激勵他們振作起來;
Since he had said 'fellow-prisoner,' lest he should cast down the souls of his hearers, see how he sets this down and rouses them up;
12:88
'Fellow-workers,' he says, 'unto the kingdom of God.'
12:89
So that, being partakers of the trials, they are also partakers of the kingdom.
12:90
'Who have been a comfort to me.'
12:91
He shows them to be great men, seeing that they became a comfort to Paul.
12:92
But let us consider Paul's discernment.
12:93
'Walk,' he says, 'in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.'
12:94
意思就是:這時候不是你們的,乃是他們的;
That is: The time is not yours, but theirs;
12:95
do not therefore seek to lord it, but redeem the time.
12:96
And he did not say simply, 'Buy,' but 'Buy up' (redeem), signifying that: By disposing yourselves thus, you make it your own in another way.
12:97
For it is the mark of exceeding folly to devise pretexts for wars and enmities.
12:98
For besides enduring superfluous dangers that bring no gain, there arises yet another harm—namely, that the Greeks do not draw near to us.
12:99
因為當你在弟兄中間時,你有理由放膽自信;
For when you are among the brethren, you are with reason confident;
12:100
Do you see how everywhere he means by 'those without' the Greeks? For this reason too, in writing to Timothy, he said:
12:101
'He must also have a good report from them that are without;'
12:102
and again, 'For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? Walk,' he says, 'in wisdom toward them that are without.'
12:103
For they are 'without,' even though they dwell in the same world as we, being outside the kingdom and outside the Father's little house.
12:104
同時他也藉著稱那些人為「外面的人」來安慰他們;
At the same time he also comforts them by calling those others 'without';
12:105
which is what he said above, that 'Your life is hid with Christ in God.'
12:106
他說,到那時你們才可尋求榮耀,尋求尊貴,尋求其餘的一切;
Then, he says, seek glory, then honours, then all the other things;
12:107
but now do not, rather yield these to those others.
12:108
Then, lest you should suppose that he is speaking of money, he adds:
12:109
'Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every one.'
12:110
他說,這是為叫言語不致充滿虛偽;
That it may not be full of hypocrisy, he says;
12:111
for that is not grace, nor is it seasoned with salt.
12:112
譬如說,若有必要在無危險的情形下向人致敬盡禮,你不要推辭;
For instance, if it be needful to pay court without danger, do not decline it;
12:113
若有機會和藹地與人交談,不要以為這是諂媚;
if there be occasion to converse graciously, do not think the matter to be flattery;
12:114
do all that pertains to honour, without harm to godliness.
12:115
Do you not see how Daniel paid court to an impious man? Do you not see the three children, how with wisdom they bore themselves toward the king, showing both courage and boldness, yet nothing insolent or offensive? For that would no longer be boldness, but vainglory.
12:116
'That you may know,' he says, 'how you ought to answer every one.'
12:117
For one must answer the ruler in one way, and the ruled in another.
12:118
One must deal one way with the rich man, another way with the poor man.
12:119
為什麼呢?因為富人和掌權者的靈魂往往較為軟弱,更容易發炎腫脹,更容易渙散流蕩;
Why so? Because the souls of the rich and of those in authority happen to be weaker, more inflamed, more prone to dissolution;
12:120
so that there one must be more condescending and accommodating;
12:121
至於窮人和居於下位者的靈魂,卻更為堅實、更為明理;
the souls of the poor and of those who are subject are sturdier and more sensible;
12:122
so that here one must use greater frankness of speech, looking to one thing alone, edification.
12:123
並不是因為一個富有、另一個貧窮,就當多敬重這一個、少敬重那一個;
Not that, because the one is rich and the other poor, the one should be honored more and the other less;
12:124
而是因著軟弱的緣故,這一個要被扶持擔待,另一個卻不必如此對待;
but rather, on account of his weakness let the one be supported and borne up, while the other is not treated in the same way;
12:125
譬如,若沒有緣故,就不要稱那外邦希臘人為「污穢的」,也不要對他出言侮辱;
for instance, when there is no cause for it, do not call the pagan Greek 'defiled,' nor be insolent toward him;
12:126
但你若被問及他的教義,就要回答說那是污穢不虔的;
but if you are questioned about his doctrine, answer that it is defiled and impious;
12:127
yet when no one is questioning or compelling you to speak, it is not fitting simply to incur hatred.
12:128
何必無端製造多餘的仇恨呢?再者,你若在教導某人真道,就當從所立的前提出發來講;
For what necessity is there to manufacture needless enmities? Again, if you are instructing someone in the faith, speak on the basis of an assumed premise;
12:129
話語若用鹽調和過,即使落在一個渙散的靈魂裡,也能振作那鬆懈之處;
If the word be seasoned with salt, then even if it fall upon a dissolute soul, it will brace up what is slack;
12:130
and if it fall upon a rough soul, it will smooth out its hardness.
12:131
Being gracious, let him be neither burdensome nor, on the other hand, frivolous, but let him have both a certain astringency and that which brings pleasure.
12:132
因為他若過度嚴厲收斂,反而是害多於益;
For if he be too astringent beyond measure, he does more harm than good;
12:133
他若過度戲謔詼諧,反而是使人憂傷過於使人得益;
but if he jest beyond measure, he grieves rather than benefits;
12:134
so that in all things there must be due measure.
12:135
也不要垂頭喪氣、面帶愁容;
Neither be downcast and gloomy;
12:136
for that is contemptible and cheapened. Rather, taking the virtue of each and shunning the vice, as the bee takes from the one its brightness and from the other its dignity.
12:137
For if a physician does not treat all bodies alike, much more must a teacher not treat all souls alike.
12:138
而且身體承受不合宜的藥物,尚且比靈魂承受不合宜的話語為易;
And indeed bodies would more readily bear unsuitable remedies than a soul would bear an unsuitable word;
12:139
for instance, a pagan Greek approaches you and becomes your friend; say nothing to him about this matter until he has become truly a friend.
12:140
For observe how Paul too, when he arrived at Athens, discoursed with them.
12:141
他並沒有說:「你們這些污穢、極其可憎的人哪」;
He did not say, 'O you defiled and utterly abominable men';
12:142
but what? 'Men of Athens, in all things I perceive that you are exceedingly religious.'
12:143
再者,當必須嚴厲斥責的時候,他也不推辭;
Again, when it was necessary to rebuke sharply, he did not shrink from it;
12:144
but with great vehemence he said to Elymas:
12:145
'O full of all deceit and all villainy, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness!'
12:146
For just as to have rebuked those men would have been folly, so not to have rebuked this one would have been weakness.
12:147
Again, were you brought before a ruler on account of some matter? Render the honors that are due.
12:148
'They shall make known to you,' he says, 'all things here.'
12:149
Why did I not come myself? he says. And what is meant by 'They shall make known to you all things here'? That is, my bonds and all the other things that detain me.
12:150
I, then, who pray to see them, who even send others in my stead, would not myself have been absent, had not some great necessity held me back.
12:151
And yet this was not the language of men making an accusation.
12:152
And yet it was very much the language of men making an accusation.
12:153
For to learn that he had fallen into trials and had borne them nobly—this was a thing that confirmed the matter and set upright their souls.
12:154
'With Onesimus,' he says, 'the beloved and faithful brother.'
12:155
保羅稱那奴僕為「兄弟」;
Paul calls the slave 'brother';
12:156
seeing that he even names himself a slave of the faithful.
12:157
Let us all cast down our conceit, let us trample underfoot our arrogance.
12:158
Paul names himself a slave—he who is worth the whole world and countless heavens—and do you think great things of yourself? He who leads and carries all as he wills, who holds the first place in the kingdom of heaven, who is crowned, who ascended to the third heaven, calls his slaves brothers and fellow slaves.
12:159
Where is the madness? Where is the arrogance? So trustworthy had Onesimus become, that such matters could be entrusted to him.
12:160
他說:「還有巴拿巴的表弟馬可,你們曾受了關於他的吩咐」;
'And Mark,' he says, 'the cousin of Barnabas, concerning whom you received commandments';
12:161
perhaps they had received commandments from Barnabas.
12:162
他抑制猶太人的自高氣焰;
He puts down the puffed-up pride of the Jews;
12:163
he lifts up these men's souls, because few indeed were of the circumcision, but the greater number of the Gentiles.
12:164
'Who have been,' he says, 'a comfort to me.'
12:165
He shows himself to be amid great trials.
12:166
當我們藉著同在、藉著言語、藉著殷勤守候來安慰聖徒的時候,當我們與他們一同受苦的時候(因他說:「要記念被捆鎖的人,好像與他們同受捆鎖」);
when we comfort the saints both by our presence and by our word and by our constant attendance, when we suffer hardship together with them (for he says, 'the prisoners, as though bound with them');
12:167
when we make their sufferings our own, then we shall also share in their crowns.
12:168
Were you not dragged into the stadium? Did you not descend into the contest? One man stripped for the fight, another wrestles.
12:169
然而你若願意,你也可以有分;
But if you will, you too shall have a share;
12:170
anoint that man, become his admirer and zealous supporter, cry aloud to him from outside, rouse him up,
12:171
restore his strength, revive his soul.
12:172
It follows that these same things should be done in the case of all others.
12:173
For Paul had no need, but it was to lift up those men that he said these things.
12:174
所以你在對待其餘眾人時,要堵住那些想要毀謗者的口,為他造就愛慕之人,並以殷勤的照料接待那出去傳道的人;
You, therefore, in the case of all others, silence those who wish to disparage, provide him with admirers, receive him as he goes forth with much attentive care;
12:175
這樣你就在那些冠冕上有分,也在那榮耀上有分;
thus you will share in the crowns, thus in the glory;
12:176
縱然你別無所作,只是為所成就的事歡喜,你這樣也已有分,且不是尋常的一分;
and even if you do nothing else, but only rejoice over what has been accomplished, in this way too you have shared no ordinary share;
12:177
for you have brought love, the sum and crown of all good things.
12:178
For if those who weep are thought to share in the mourning, and confer great favor upon the mourners, and take away much of the pain, much more do those who rejoice make the joy greater.
12:179
For how great an evil it is not to have those who share one's grief, hear the Prophet saying:
12:180
'And I waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none.'
12:181
For this reason Paul also says:
12:182
'Rejoice with them that rejoice, and weep with them that weep.'
12:183
if you see your brother in good repute, do not say, 'His is the good repute; on what account should I rejoice?' These are not the words of a brother, but of an enemy.
12:184
你若願意,那好名聲就不是他的,乃是你的;
If you will, it is not his but yours;
12:185
you are able to make it greater, if you be not downcast but glad, if you become cheerful and bright.
12:186
And that the matter is indeed so is plain from this:
12:187
Those who envy do not envy only those who are in good repute, but also those who rejoice at their good repute.
12:188
Thus they know that these men too are held in high esteem, and that these are indeed the ones who are honored.
12:189
因為那一位受人稱讚時,會滿臉羞紅;
For the one man blushes deeply when he is praised;
12:190
but this other man preens himself with much pleasure.
12:191
Do you not see in the case of athletes how one is crowned and another is not crowned? And the pain and the joy belong to those who love them and to those who hate them.
12:192
Those men leap for joy, those men dance about.
12:193
你看,不嫉妒是何等偉大的事;
See how great a thing it is not to envy;
12:194
勞苦是屬於別人的,快樂卻是屬於你的;
another's is the toil, and yours is the pleasure;
12:195
another wears the crown, and you dance about, you preen yourself.
12:196
Tell me, another has won the victory; why do you leap for joy? But those others too know well that what has happened is shared in common.
12:197
因此,那些嫉妒的人並不指責這人,卻試圖推翻他的勝利;
For this reason those who envy do not find fault with this man, but they attempt to overthrow his victory;
12:198
and you hear them saying words such as these:
12:199
「我把你抹去了」,又說:「我把你摔倒了」;
'I wiped you out,' and, 'I threw you down;'
12:200
and yet the deed belongs to another, but the praise is yours.
12:201
但若在外在的事上,不嫉妒反倒把別人的好處據為己有,是這樣大的善,那麼在勝過魔鬼的事上豈不更是如此;
But if in outward things it is so great a good not to envy, but to make another's good things one's own, much more so in the victory over the devil;
12:202
for then he rages more fiercely against us, plainly because we rejoice the more.
12:203
And indeed, foul as he is, he knows exactly that this joy is a great one.
12:204
Do you wish to grieve him? Be glad and rejoice.
12:205
你想使牠歡喜嗎?你就愁眉苦臉吧;
Do you wish to gladden him? Be downcast;
12:206
你藉著自己的沮喪,減輕了那因你弟兄的勝利而臨到牠的憂傷;
you lighten the grief that has come upon him from your brother's victory by means of your own despondency;
12:207
你與牠站在一起,卻與你的弟兄斷絕了;
you take your stand with him, having been cut off from your brother;
12:208
you do a greater evil than he does.
12:209
因為身為仇敵而行仇敵之事,與身為朋友卻與仇敵站在一起,這兩者並不相同;
For it is not the same thing to do the deeds of enemies while being an enemy, and, while being a friend, to take one's stand with the enemies;
12:210
this latter man is more abominable than the enemies.
12:211
If your brother has won esteem, whether by speaking, or by making a display, or by succeeding, become a partaker of his good esteem; show that he is a member of your own body.
12:212
'And how?' he says; 'for I do not win esteem.'
12:213
你千萬不要說出這話;
Never utter this word;
12:214
Indeed, if you who say these things were standing near me, I would have laid my hand upon your lips, lest at any time the enemy should hear.
12:215
我們彼此之間常懷有仇恨,卻不在我們的仇敵面前顯露出來;
Often we hold enmities against one another, and we do not display them to our enemies;
12:216
yet you display yours to the devil.
12:217
不要說這話,甚至連想也不要想;
Do not say this, do not even think it;
12:218
the glory passes over into the whole body.
12:219
他說:「那麼,為何外面的人不是這樣看待呢?」因為你就是那緣由;
'What then,' he says, 'that those outside are not so disposed?' Because you are the cause;
12:220
當他們看見你把他的喜樂從自己身上疏遠出去,他們也就疏遠了;
when they see you estranging his pleasure from yourself, they too become estranged;
12:221
但當他們看見你把它據為己有時,他們就不敢;
but when they see you making it your own, they do not dare;
12:222
rather you too are equally resplendent.
12:223
You did not win esteem by speaking, but you won esteem by rejoicing together with him, more greatly than he did.
12:224
因為若愛是偉大的,且是萬事的總綱,那麼你就領受了從愛而來的冠冕;
For if love is a great thing and the sum of all, you have received the crown that comes from it;
12:225
he received the one from oratory, but you the one from love.
12:226
He displayed the power of words, but you through your deeds cast down envy, you trampled upon malice.
12:227
因此,你理當比他更配得冠冕;
So that with good reason you would be crowned rather than he;
12:228
you not only trampled upon malice, but you have also accomplished something else.
12:229
He has only one crown, but you have two, and the two more resplendent than the one.
12:230
What sort are these? One which you took up against envy, and a second which you bound about yourself out of love.
12:231
For rejoicing together is a proof not only of being pure from envy, but also of having love firmly rooted.
12:232
因為那人常也被某種屬人的情慾所攪擾,例如虛榮;
For that man is often troubled also by some human passion, such as vainglory;
12:233
你卻是脫離一切情慾、潔淨無瑕的;
but you are pure from every passion;
12:234
for surely it is not out of vainglory that you rejoice over another's good things.
12:235
請告訴我,那人是否把教會扶正了?他是否使會眾增多了?那你就再稱讚他吧;
Has that man set the church aright, tell me? Has he increased the congregation? Praise him again;
12:236
你便有了雙倍的冠冕;
you have the crowns doubled;
12:237
you cast down envy, you bound love about yourself.
12:238
Do you wish to hear of a third crown as well? This one, men below applaud; but you, the angels above.
12:239
For it is not the same thing to display eloquence, and to master the passions.
12:240
這一種讚美是暫時的,那一種卻是永遠的;
This praise is temporary, that one eternal;
12:241
這一種出於人,那一種出於神;
this comes from men, that from God;
12:242
this man is seen to be crowned, but you are crowned in secret, where your Father sees.
12:243
If it were possible, after separating it from the body, to see each person's soul, I would show you this man's more venerable than that man's, shining forth the more.
12:244
Let us trample upon the stings of malice; from this we benefit ourselves, beloved, and we ourselves shall bind about us the crown.
12:245
那嫉妒的人,乃是與神爭戰,而非與那人爭戰;
He who envies fights against God, not against that man;
12:246
for when he sees a man possessing grace, and is pained, and wishes the Church to be pulled down, he fights not against that man, but against God.
12:247
For tell me, if someone were adorning a king's daughter, and won esteem by adorning her and making her comely, but another wished to disgrace her and to make her unable to be adorned, against whom would he be plotting—against this adorner, or against her and her father? So also now you who envy: in fighting against the Church, you make war upon God.
12:248
因為既然教會的益處是與弟兄的美譽緊密相連的,所以當這益處被拆毀時,那美譽也必然被拆毀;
For since the benefit of the Church is bound up together with the good esteem of the brother, of necessity, when the former is dissolved, that also is dissolved;
12:249
so that in this respect you do a satanic deed, plotting against the body of Christ.
12:250
你對這毫無過犯的人心懷痛楚;
Against this man who has done no wrong you are pained;
12:251
but much more against Christ.
12:252
祂如何虧負了你,以致你不容許祂的身體以美麗得妝飾?以致你不容許新婦得裝扮?但請與我一同思想那刑罰是何等的重;
How has He wronged you, that you do not permit His body to be adorned with beauty? that you do not permit the bride to be arrayed? But consider with me the punishment, how great it is;
12:253
你使你自己的仇敵歡喜,而那贏得美譽、你想藉嫉妒使他憂傷的人,你反倒使他歡喜,反倒顯明他因被嫉妒而贏得了美譽;
You gladden your own enemies, and that very man who wins esteem, whom you wish to grieve by envying, you rather gladden him, you rather show that he has won esteem by being envied;
12:254
for you would not have envied him; you rather show that you are being punished.
12:255
因此,我以這些理由來勸勉,實在感到羞愧;
I am ashamed, therefore, to be exhorting from these considerations;
12:256
nevertheless, since we are so weakly disposed, let us, being instructed even from these things, be rid of this destructive passion.
12:257
Are you pained that he has won esteem? Why then do you exalt his esteem by envying? Do you wish to punish him? Why then do you show that you are pained? Why do you exact punishment from yourself in front of this man whom you wish not to win esteem? The pleasure, then, will be double for him, and the punishment for you—not only because you show him to be great, but because you also engender in him another pleasure by punishing yourself.
12:258
And again, over the very things at which you grieve, he takes delight, while you envy him.
12:259
See how we inflict grievous wounds upon ourselves, and yet do not perceive it.
12:260
And yet, why is he an enemy? What wrong has he done? Nevertheless we make our enemy more illustrious, and by this we punish ourselves the more.
12:261
Again we take vengeance upon ourselves, if we perceive that he has come to know it.
12:262
因為他或許並不以此為樂;
For perhaps he takes no delight in it;
12:263
yet we, supposing that he delights in it, again on this account grieve.
12:264
你為何給自己造成創傷呢?親愛的弟兄們,讓我們思想這些事——那不嫉妒之人所得的雙重冠冕,來自世人與來自神的稱讚,以及從惡毒嫉恨而來的種種禍患;
Why do you inflict wounds upon yourself? Let us ponder these things, beloved—the twofold crowns of those who do not envy, the praises from men and those from God, and the evils that come from malice;
12:265
thus shall we be able to quench the wild beast, to be well-approved before God, and to obtain the same rewards as those who are approved.
12:266
縱然我們未能得著,那也是因著對我們有益的緣故而未得著;
And even if we do not obtain them, we shall not obtain them for our profit's sake;
12:267
yet even so, having lived to the glory of God, we shall be able to obtain the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
