'The mystery which has been hidden from the ages and from the generations, but now has been made manifest to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory, whom we proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.'
5:2
使徒既述說了我們所領受的,又藉所賜之物的偉大彰顯了神的慈愛與所賜給我們的尊榮,便再引入另一層加深之意——就是連在我們以前也無人曾認識這奧祕;
Having told of the things we obtained, and having shown God's loving-kindness and the honor shown us by the greatness of what was given, he again introduces another heightening—that not even before us did anyone learn it;
5:3
which he also does in the Epistle to the Ephesians, saying:
5:4
Neither angels, nor principalities, nor any other created power, but only the Son of God knew it.
5:5
因此他不僅說「隱藏」,乃說「深藏起來」;
Therefore he did not simply say 'hidden,' but 'hidden away';
5:6
又指明,這事縱然如今才成就,卻是古老的,是神從起初就定意的,並且早已這樣預定成形;
and that, even if it has now come to pass, yet it is ancient, and from above God willed these things, and thus had He fashioned it beforehand;
5:7
'From the ages,' he says, 'from the beginning.'
5:8
And fittingly does he call it a mystery, which no one knew except God.
5:9
它藏在何處呢?藏在基督裡;
And where was it hidden? In Christ;
5:10
正如他在以弗所書中所說的;
just as he says in the Epistle to the Ephesians;
5:11
or as when the prophet says, 'From everlasting and to everlasting You are.'
5:12
'But now,' he says, 'it has been made manifest to His saints.'
5:13
So that the whole is of God's dispensation.
5:14
'But now,' he says, 'it has been made manifest.'
5:15
He did not say 'It came to be,' but 'It was made manifest to His saints.'
5:16
So that even now it is still hidden, if indeed it was made manifest to the saints alone.
5:17
所以,不要讓那些人迷惑你們;
Let not those men, then, deceive you;
5:18
for they do not know why to those alone. 'To whom He willed,' he says.
5:19
See how everywhere he stops the mouth of their questionings.
5:20
'To whom God willed,' he says, 'to make it known.'
5:21
And His willing is not without reason.
5:22
But he said this rather to make them accountable to grace, than to leave them to think highly of themselves over any achievement.
5:23
'What is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles.'
5:24
He spoke solemnly, and added weight, out of deep feeling seeking heightening upon heightening.
5:25
For this too belongs to heightening—to speak indefinitely: 'The riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles.'
5:26
For it is chiefly among the Gentiles that it is displayed, as he also says elsewhere, 'And that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy;'
5:27
and it is displayed also among others, but far more among these is the great glory of the mystery.
5:28
因為單憑赤裸的言語與純粹的信心,毫不費力,便一舉將那比石頭更無知覺的人領入天使的尊榮,這實在是這奧祕的榮耀與豐盛;
For to lead men more senseless than stones all at once into the dignity of angels, simply through bare words and faith alone, without any toil, is truly the glory and riches of the mystery;
5:29
as if one were to take a dog wasted with hunger and mange, foul and ill-favored, unable even to move but lying flung aside, and suddenly should make it even a man, and set it upon the royal throne.
5:30
他們曾敬拜石頭和泥土;
They worshiped stones and the earth;
5:31
他們卻學到自己比諸天和太陽更尊貴,全世界都服事他們;
they learned that they are better than heaven and the sun, and that the whole world serves them;
5:32
他們曾是魔鬼的俘虜與囚犯;
they were captives and prisoners of the devil;
5:33
轉眼之間卻凌駕於牠的頭上,向牠發號施令,並鞭打牠;
all at once they came to be above his head, and gave commands to him, and scourged him;
5:34
他們原是鬼魔的崇拜者與奴僕,如今卻成了眾天使與眾天使長之主宰的身體;
being worshipers and slaves of demons, they became the body of the Master of the angels and of the archangels;
5:35
not even knowing what God is, they suddenly became also [His].
5:36
你願意看看他們一躍而過的無數台階嗎?首先,他們得學到石頭不是神;
Do you wish to see the countless steps which they leaped over? First they had to learn that the stones are not gods;
5:37
其次,它們不但不是神,反倒連人都不如;
second, that not only are they not gods, but they are even less than men;
5:38
第五,他們把兩極歸為一——就是不但石頭,連泥土、走獸、草木、人、諸天都不當敬拜;
fifth, that they brought the extremes together into one—that not only stones, but neither earth, nor animals, nor plants, nor man, nor heaven [are to be worshiped];
5:39
or again from above: that neither stones, nor animals, nor plants, nor elements, nor the things above, nor the things below, nor man, nor demons, nor angels, nor archangels, nor any other of those powers above ought to be worshiped by human nature.
5:40
As if drawn up from some deep abyss, they had to learn that the Master of all is this God, that Him alone must one worship, that the wondrous way of life is good, that the present death is not death, that this life is not life, that the body rises again, that it becomes incorruptible, that it ascends into the heavens, that it attains immortality, that it stands with the angels, that it is translated.
5:41
But this one, who was down there below, having leaped over all these things, He set on high upon the throne, making him who was beneath the stones more lordly than the angels and archangels and thrones and dominions.
5:42
Truly he spoke well: 'What is the riches of the glory of this mystery.'
5:43
這就好比有人忽然使某個愚人成為哲人一般;
As if one were suddenly to make some fool into a philosopher;
5:44
Or rather, whatever anyone might say, he will say nothing at all.
5:45
For indeed the words of Paul too are boundless.
5:46
'What,' he says, 'is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you.'
5:47
Again, one had to learn that He who is above all, and the Ruler of angels, and He who holds sway over all the other Powers, came down below, and became man, and suffered countless things, and rose again, and was taken up.
5:48
All these things were of the mystery, and he sets it forth with an encomium, saying, 'Which is Christ in you.'
5:49
But if He is in you, why do you seek angels as teachers? Of this mystery.
5:50
For there is also another mystery.
5:51
But this is truly a mystery, which no one knows, which is wonderful, which is beyond common expectation, which was hidden.
5:52
'Which is Christ in you,' he says, 'the hope of glory, whom we proclaim,' bringing Him down from above.
5:53
Teaching and admonishing, not in a commanding manner nor with compulsion.
5:54
For this too belongs to God's love for mankind—that men are not brought near in a tyrannical way.
5:55
Since the word 'Teaching' was a lofty thing, he added 'Admonishing,' which belongs more to a father than to a teacher.
5:56
'Whom we,' he says, 'proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom.'
5:57
That is, with all wisdom and understanding, or speaking all things in wisdom.
5:58
For to be able to learn such things is not for ordinary men.
5:59
'That we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.'
5:60
What do you say? 'Every man'? 'Yes,' he says, 'this is what we strive for.'
5:61
For what then? Even if this does not come about, the blessed Paul was earnest to make them perfect.
5:62
So this is perfection, but that other state is imperfect.
5:63
So that even if one does not possess all wisdom, he is imperfect.
5:64
Not in the Law, nor in the angels.
5:65
In Christ, that is, in the knowledge of Christ.
5:66
He who knows what Christ has done will have higher thoughts than the angels.
5:67
'For which I also labour, striving.'
5:68
'I am not simply earnest,' he says, 'nor in a casual way, but I labour, striving,' with much diligence—that is, with much watchfulness.
5:69
If I am so watchful for your good things, much more ought you to be.
5:70
Then again, showing that it is divine, he says, 'According to His working, which works in me mightily.'
5:71
He shows that this is God's work.
5:72
'He therefore who makes me strong for this, clearly wills this.'
5:73
Wherefore also at the beginning he says, 'By the will of God.'
5:74
So that he has set it down not only in modesty, but also as confirming it by his deed, and by his striving.
5:75
Having said this, he shows that many are contending against him.
5:76
'For I would have you know what a great conflict I have for you, and for those in Laodicea.'
5:77
Then, lest this should seem to be due to their own weakness, he joined others with them, and did not yet condemn them.
5:78
'And as many as have not seen my face in the flesh.'
5:79
He divinely shows here that he saw them continually in spirit.
5:80
And he bears witness to them of great love.
5:81
'That their hearts may be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, unto the knowledge of the mystery of God the Father and of Christ.'
5:82
'In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.'
5:83
By now, then, he is hastening and in travail to plunge into the doctrine, neither accusing them nor releasing them from the accusation.
5:84
That what may come about? 'That we may be knit together.'
5:85
That they may stand firm in the faith.
5:86
But he does not put it so; rather, he cuts short the matter of accusation.
5:87
That is, that they may be united in love, neither by compulsion nor by force.
5:88
For, as I said, he is not burdensome, always yielding to them, and for this reason he says:
5:89
I contend, because I desire it to be with love, and that willingly.
5:90
For I do not simply wish the gathering together to come about, nor merely with the mouth, but that their hearts may be comforted.
5:91
'Being knit together in love, unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding.'
5:92
That is, that they may doubt about nothing, that they may be fully assured concerning all things.
5:93
And by 'full assurance' he meant that which comes through faith.
5:94
For there is also a full assurance that comes through reasonings, but that one is worth nothing.
5:95
'I know,' he says, 'that you believe, but I wish you to be fully assured—not only in riches, but unto all the riches, that you may be fully assured in all things and intensely.'
5:96
And observe the understanding of this blessed man.
5:97
他並沒有說:「你們作得不好,因為你們沒有得著充分的確信」,來責備他們;
He did not say, 'You do wrong, in that you are not fully assured,' and accuse them;
5:98
but rather, 'You do not know how earnestly I strive that you may be fully assured with understanding, and not merely in a casual way.'
5:99
For since he had spoken of faith, 'Do not think,' he says, 'that I spoke of it simply and to no profit, but with understanding, with love.'
5:100
'Unto the knowledge of the mystery of God the Father, and of Christ.'
5:101
So that this is the mystery of God—to be brought near through the Son.
5:102
'And of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.'
5:103
But if they are in Him, then it was wisely that He came even now.
5:104
For what reason then do certain of the foolish bring accusations? See how he converses with the simpler ones:
5:105
'In whom are all the treasures.'
5:106
你們切不可以為已經擁有了一切;
For do not suppose that you already possess the whole;
5:107
這些寶藏連天使也向他們隱藏,不單是向你們隱藏;
they are hidden even from the angels, not from you only;
5:108
因此,人必須向祂求一切;
so that one must ask all things from Him;
5:109
He Himself gives wisdom and knowledge.
5:110
他說「寶藏」,是要顯明其豐盛;
Now by saying 'Treasures,' he shows their abundance;
5:111
他說「一切」,是要顯明其中毫無缺欠;
by 'All,' that not even the least is lacking;
5:112
and by 'Hidden,' that He alone knows them.
5:113
'And this I say, lest anyone should beguile you with persuasive words.'
5:114
Do you see that it was for this reason, he says, that I spoke these things—namely, that you should not seek from men?
5:115
'Lest any man beguile you,' he says, 'with persuasive speech.'
5:116
For what, if he speaks persuasively? 'For though I am absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit.'
5:117
The consistent thing would have been to say this:
5:118
'For though I am absent in the flesh, nevertheless I know the deceivers.'
5:119
But now he has ended in praise.
5:120
'Joying and beholding your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.'
5:121
'Your order,' that is, your good order, he says.
5:122
'And the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.'
5:123
These words are rather matter for praise.
5:124
And he did not say 'your faith,' but 'the steadfastness,' as though addressing soldiers standing in good order and firmly.
5:125
That which is firm no deceit, no temptation can shake.
5:126
'Not only,' he says, 'have you not fallen, but no one has even confounded your order.'
5:127
他把自己安置在他們之上,好叫他們像懼怕他親身在場一般懼怕;
He set himself over them, that they might fear him as if present;
5:128
for thus is order preserved.
5:129
「堅固」這詞含有緊密結合之意;
From the word 'steadfastness' comes the notion of compactness;
5:130
堅固之物正是這樣形成的:當你把許多件聚攏在一起,緊密而不可分割地黏合起來時;
for a firm structure comes to be in this way—when, having gathered many things together, you cement them densely and inseparably;
5:131
then it becomes a solid mass, as in the case of a wall.
5:132
For those who stand by themselves, when one cements and joins them together accurately, he makes firm.
5:133
And faith likewise does the same, when it does not permit reasonings to enter in.
5:134
For just as reasonings divide and shake, so faith makes firm and causes to be fixed fast.
5:135
For since God has bestowed on us benefits greater than human reasoning can comprehend, with good cause did he bring in faith.
5:136
For it is not possible for one who demands reasonings to be steadfast.
5:137
For behold, see how all our venerable truths are void of reasonings, and hold fast to faith alone.
5:138
God is nowhere, and yet is everywhere.
5:139
What is more irrational than this? Each point by itself is full of perplexity.
5:140
For assuredly he is not in a place, nor is there any place in which he is.
5:141
He came not into being, he did not make himself, he did not begin to be.
5:142
若沒有信心,甚麼樣的推理能接受這些呢?這豈不看似可笑,反倒像個沒有謎底的謎語麼?如此,他的無始、非受生、不可界限、無窮無盡,實在是叫人難以測度;
What reasoning will admit these things, unless there be faith? Or does it not seem to be a matter for mockery, and rather to be an enigma without solution? Thus, then, is his being without beginning, unbegotten, uncircumscribed, and infinite—so baffling to comprehend;
5:143
but let us consider his incorporeality, whether we can ever examine it by reasoning.
5:144
「無形」是甚麼呢?不過是一個空洞的字眼罷了;
What is 'incorporeal'? A bare word only;
5:145
因為思想並未領受甚麼,也沒有在自身刻畫出任何形像;
for the mind has received nothing, nor has it impressed any form upon itself;
5:146
for even if it should form an image, it comes to nature, and to the properties that produce a body.
5:147
So that the mouth indeed speaks, but the understanding does not know what it says, except this one thing only—that it is not a body.
5:148
And why do I speak of God? For even in the case of the soul, what is its incorporeality—the soul that has come into being, that is enclosed, that is circumscribed? Tell me, show me.
5:149
Is it air? But air is a body, even if not dense; and it is clear from many considerations that it is a rarefied body.
5:150
Or fire? But fire is a body; and it is an activity.
5:151
Why so? Because it pervades everywhere.
5:152
然而它自身若是物體,那無形之物便是在某個地方了;
But if this itself is a body, then the incorporeal is in a place;
5:153
and that which is circumscribed is in a figure, and figures come from lines, and lines belong to bodies.
5:154
Again, what notion have we of that which is without figure? It has no shape, no form, no impress.
5:155
你看思想是何等地暈眩麼?再者,那本性是不能容納諸惡的;
Do you see how the understanding grows dizzy? Again, that Nature is incapable of admitting evils;
5:156
but he is also good of his own will.
5:157
Again, was he brought into being willingly, or unwillingly? But neither can this be said.
5:158
再者,他是否界限這世界呢?他若不界限它,他自己便是被界限的了;
Again, does he circumscribe the world, or not? For if he does not circumscribe it, he himself is circumscribed;
5:159
but if he circumscribes it, he is infinite in his nature.
5:160
再者,他是否界限自己呢?他若界限自己,那麼他對自己便不是無始的,只是對我們是無始的罷了;
Again, does he circumscribe himself? But if he circumscribes himself, then he is not without beginning to himself, but only to us;
5:161
everywhere we must grant the opposite.
5:162
Do you see how great is the darkness, and that everywhere faith is needed? This is that which is firm.
5:163
But, if you please, let us come to matters lesser than these.
5:164
That Essence has activity.
5:165
在他而言,作為又是甚麼呢?難道是某種運動麼?那麼他就不是不改變的了;
And what is activity in his case? Is it some kind of motion? Then he is not unchangeable;
5:166
因為凡被推動的,就不是不改變的;
for that which is moved is not unchangeable;
5:167
for it is moved out of a state of rest.
5:168
But nevertheless he is in motion, and never stands still.
5:169
但請告訴我,是哪一種運動呢?在我們這裏共有七種:向下、向上、向內、向外、向右、向左、以及環繞旋轉;
But what kind of motion, tell me? For with us there are seven kinds: downward, upward, inward, outward, to the right, to the left, and in a circle;
5:170
or, if not this, then growth, diminution, coming-to-be, perishing, alteration.
5:171
然而他不被這些中的任何一種所推動;難道他是像心思被推動那樣被推動的麼?但連這也不是;
But he is moved by none of these; rather, is he moved with such motion as the mind is moved? But not even this;
5:172
for the mind is moved in many ways, and often disorderly.
5:173
意欲與作為是同一回事麼?但他願意萬人都成為良善並且得救;
Is to will the same as to act? But he wills all men to be good and to be saved;
5:174
既然如此,為何未能成就呢?難道意欲是一回事,作為又是另一回事麼?那麼意欲對於作為便不足夠了;
why then does it not come to pass? But is willing one thing, and acting another? Then willing does not suffice for action;
5:175
how then does the Scripture say, 'Whatsoever he willed, that he did'? And again, the leper says to Christ:
5:176
'If you will, you can cleanse me'? Shall I mention yet another? How did the things that are come into being out of things that are not? How are they dissolved into nothing? What is above the heaven? And again, what is above that? And above that, what? And after that, what? And this goes on to infinity.
5:177
地之下是甚麼?是海;
What is below the earth? The sea;
5:178
and after this, what? And again after that, what? But to the right, to the left—is there not the same perplexity? (4)
5:179
Would you have me bring the argument to bear upon things visible? Upon things that have already come to pass? Tell me, how did the sea-monster keep Jonah in its belly
5:180
and he was not destroyed? Is it not an irrational creature? Does it not simply move? How did it spare the righteous man? How did the heat not suffocate him? How did it not cause him to putrefy? For if merely to be in the deep is perplexing, to be also within its bowels and in that heat is far more perplexing still.
5:181
他在那裏怎能呼吸空氣呢?那呼吸怎夠兩個活物之用呢?大魚又怎能把他毫髮無傷地吐出來呢?他又怎能出聲說話呢?他又怎能神智清醒,並且禱告呢?這些事豈不是難以置信的麼?我們若用推理來查究,這些便是難以置信的;
For how did he breathe the air there? How did the breathing suffice for two living creatures? And how did it vomit him forth unharmed? And how did he even utter speech? And how was he in himself, and prayed? Are not these things incredible? If we examine them by reasoning, they are incredible;
5:182
but if by faith, then wholly credible.
5:183
Shall I mention something even beyond this? The grain of wheat corrupts in the bosom of the earth, and rises again.
5:184
Behold the wonders, opposite yet each surpassing the other:
5:185
wondrous that the body did not decay, and wondrous that, having decayed, it should rise again.
5:186
Where are those who disbelieve the resurrection and say, 'How is this bone joined to that one?' and who bring in such fabulous objections? Tell me, how did Elijah go up in a chariot of fire? Fire is wont to burn, not to bear aloft.
5:187
他怎能活這麼長的時間?他在甚麼地方?這事為何發生?以諾又被遷到哪裡去了?他享用的食物與我們的一樣嗎?有甚麼攔阻他不能在這裡呢?然而他並不享用這些食物;
How does he live so long a time? In what place is he? Why did this come to pass? And where was Enoch translated? Does he enjoy such food as we do? And what hinders him from being here? But he does not partake of it;
5:188
and why was he translated? Behold how God trains us little by little.
5:189
This trained us to accept the taking up of Elijah.
5:190
祂又把挪亞關在方舟裡;
Again, He shut Noah up in the ark;
5:191
this trained us to accept the enclosing of the prophet within the whale.
5:192
Thus even the ancient things had need of forerunners and types.
5:193
正如在梯子上,第一階通往第二階,而人不能從第一階直接到第四階,乃是這一階通往那一階,使前者成為後者的路徑;
For just as on a ladder the first step leads on to the second, and from the first it is not possible to come to the fourth, but this step to that one, so that the one becomes a way to the other;
5:194
同樣,在第一階之前,也不可能到達第二階;
nor before the first is it possible to come to the second;
5:195
and you will see this in the ladder that Jacob beheld.
5:196
Above, it says, the Lord was established, and below the angels ascended and descended.
5:197
這預言了父有一位子;
It was prophesied that the Father has a Son;
5:198
你要我從哪裡向你顯明祂的憑據呢?是從上到下,還是從下到上?必須叫人知道,祂是無所受苦地生出的;
From whence would you have me show His signs, from above downward, or from below upward? It was necessary that it be known that He begets without passion;
5:199
for this reason a barren woman first gave birth.
5:200
更確切地說,讓我們把這論述引向更高之處;
Or rather, let us carry the argument higher up;
5:201
必須叫人相信,子是出於父的;
it was necessary to be believed that He is from Him;
5:202
那麼,怎樣呢?這事確實成就了,雖然模糊不清,因為是在預表和影兒裡,然而畢竟是成就了;
what then? This comes to pass, dimly indeed, inasmuch as it is in type and shadow, yet it comes to pass;
5:203
and as it advances it becomes somehow clearer.
5:204
From man alone came woman, and he remained whole and entire.
5:205
Again, of the conception from the Virgin there had to be some token.
5:206
A barren woman gives birth, not once, but a second and a third time and often.
5:207
如此,不生育的婦人乃是從童女而生之事的預表;
So then the barren woman is a type of the birth from the Virgin;
5:208
and this leads the mind onward to faith.
5:209
Again, this became a type of the fact that God alone is able to beget.
5:210
For if man, being the more principal, gives birth even without woman, much more is one begotten from the more principal One.
5:211
There is also another birth that is a type of the truth, namely our own birth from the Spirit.
5:212
對於這出生,不生育的婦人又是一個預表,因為這出生不是從血氣而來的;
Of this again the barren woman is a type, in that it is not from bloods;
5:213
the one, then, shows its freedom from passion, the other that it can be begotten from One alone.
5:214
基督在上頭,掌管萬有;
Christ is above, ruling over all things;
5:215
this comes to pass on earth in the case of man.
5:216
For 'Let us make man,' He says, 'according to our image and likeness,' and man is set over the rule of all the irrational creatures.
5:217
Thus He trained you, not by words, but by deeds.
5:218
Paradise made plain the pre-eminence of man's nature, and that man is the best of all creatures.
5:219
基督將要復活;
Christ was about to rise again;
5:220
behold now how many tokens there are of such a thing:
5:221
Enoch, Elijah, Jonah, the events in the furnace, the baptism prefigured in Noah, the seeds, the plants, our own birth, and the birth of all the animals.
5:222
For since in this matter everything was at stake, this above all others had many types.
5:223
萬物並非沒有神的眷顧照管,這一點可以從我們中間的事推想得知;
That all things are not without providence, one may infer from the things among us;
5:224
for nothing remains without providence, but even herds and all other things have need of a ruler.
5:225
並且萬物不是自然而然地產生的,這由地獄可以顯明;
And that all things did not come to be of themselves, Gehenna shows;
5:226
and the flood in the days of Noah showed it, and the fire, and the drowning of the Egyptians, and the events in the wilderness.
5:227
洗禮也必須有許多事在先預表它;
Baptism too had to have many things go before it;
5:228
and there came to pass all that was in water, and countless other things, such as the things in the Old Testament, the things at the pool, the cleansing of the man who was not whole, the flood itself, and the baptism of John.
5:229
必須叫人相信,神將祂自己的兒子捨了;
It had to be believed that God gives up His own Son;
5:230
a man did this beforehand.
5:231
Who is this? Abraham the patriarch.
5:232
Of all these things, then, if we are willing, we shall find types, if we seek in the Scripture.
5:233
但願我們不至疲乏灰心,倒要在這些事上規範自己;
But let us not grow weary; rather let us order ourselves in these things;
5:234
let us hold our faith firm, and display exactness of conduct, so that, giving thanks to God in all things, we may be counted worthy of the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
