Yes. But let us see whether the covenant which He swore to the fathers that He would give to the people—whether He has given it. He gave it; but they were not worthy to receive it because of their sins.
For the prophet says: "And Moses was fasting on Mount Sinai, to receive the covenant of the Lord for the people, forty days and forty nights. And Moses received from the Lord the two tablets written by the finger of the hand of the Lord in the Spirit; and taking them Moses brought them down to give to the people."
And the Lord said to Moses: "Moses, Moses, go down quickly, for your people whom you led out of the land of Egypt have transgressed the law." And Moses understood that they had made for themselves molten images again, and he cast them out of his hands, and the tablets of the covenant of the Lord were broken.
Moses indeed received it, but they were not worthy. But learn how we received it. Moses, being a servant, received it; but the Lord Himself gave it to us as a people of inheritance, having endured for our sake.
And He was manifested in order that they too might be filled up in their sins, and that we, through the Lord Jesus who inherits the covenant, might receive it—He who was prepared for this, that He Himself, appearing, having redeemed from the darkness our hearts already spent in death and given over to the lawlessness of error, might establish a covenant in us by His word.
The prophet, then, says: "I the Lord your God have called you in righteousness, and I will hold your hand and strengthen you; and I have given you for a covenant of the race, for a light of the nations, to open the eyes of the blind and to bring out from bonds those who are bound, and from the prison house those who sit in darkness." We know, then, from where we were redeemed.
Again the prophet says: "Behold, I have set you for a light of the nations, that you may be for salvation to the end of the earth; thus says the Lord, the God who redeemed you."
And again the prophet says: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He anointed me to preach good tidings of grace to the lowly; He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to proclaim an acceptable year of the Lord and a day of recompense, to comfort all who mourn."
