10:1
'For the end, concerning the hidden things of the son, a psalm of David.' Another version: 'A triumphal song upon the death of the son, an ode of David.' Another: 'Of the youth of the son.' 'I will give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will declare all Thy wondrous works.'
And this too belongs to the wisdom of the Spirit.
For He made neither all the psalms short, nor drew them all out to great length, but varied the book even in its measure, by length rousing our sloth, and by brevity giving rest to our weariness.
'I will give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will declare all Thy wondrous works.'
The kind of confession is twofold.
For it is either the condemnation of one's own sins, or thanksgiving unto God.
Here, however, it signifies the thanksgiving.
And what does 'with my whole heart' mean? 'With all eagerness, with earnestness,' he says.
Not for prosperity only, but even amid its opposites.
For this above all belongs to a thankful soul, this to a soul given to true wisdom: to give thanks even in griefs, to glorify God for all things, not only for benefits but also for chastisements.
For this procures a greater reward.
For in giving thanks for good things, you have discharged a debt;
因為你在為美善之事感恩時,乃是償還了所欠的債;
10:13
but in giving thanks amid evils, you have made God your debtor.
For he who has fared well and shows gratitude has repaid what was owed.
But he who has fared ill and yet glorifies God has established a debt in his own favour.
In return for this thanksgiving, therefore, God repays many other good things, both then and now;
因此,為報答這樣的感恩,神無論在那時或如今,都賜下許多別的美善;
10:17
so that we shall not even feel the perception of our hardships.
For no one grieves over those things for which he gives thanks to God;
因為沒有人會為那些他向神感恩的事而憂傷;
10:19
so that we shall reap yet another gain besides: the beating back of despondency.
For when you are deprived of your goods and give thanks, the loss cannot bite you so much as the thanksgiving gladdens you.
This is a mortal blow to the devil;
這對魔鬼乃是致命的一擊;
10:22
this makes the mind given to true wisdom;
這使人的心思愛慕真智慧;
10:23
this establishes a true judgement concerning present things.
For many among men do not hold the correct estimate concerning the things here below;
因為人中間有許多人,對於這世上的事物並不持有正確的評判;
10:25
just so do madmen also fear things not to be feared, and often dread things that have no real existence, and flee from shadows.
Like these are also those who dread the loss of money.
For the fear belongs not to nature, but to the will.
For if the thing were truly grievous, all who were deprived of it would necessarily grieve;
因為倘若這事本身真是可悲傷的,那麼凡被奪去它的人都必然要憂傷;
10:29
but if we do not all grieve when we suffer loss, then it belongs no longer to the nature of the thing, but to an imperfect understanding.
For just as in darkness a man has often feared even a rope, supposing it to be a serpent, and suspects everything, and reckons his friends to be enemies;
因為正如在黑暗中,人常常連一根繩子也懼怕,以為那是蛇,並且懷疑一切,把朋友當作仇敵;
10:31
so also those who are held fast by unreason, as though caught in some deep darkness, do not recognise the nature of things, but wallow in the mire, and do not regard grass as being grass;
照樣,那些被無理性所轄制的人,彷彿陷在某種深沉的黑暗之中,也認不出事物的本性,反倒在污泥中打滾,不把草看作是草;
10:32
and being filled full with the love of money, they do not perceive its foul stench;
他們既被貪愛錢財所充滿,就覺察不出其中的惡臭;
10:33
but if they should draw back from it, then they will know.
And just as those who are enamoured of an unshapely woman, when they have ceased from the malady, then come to understand her ugliness;
又正如那些迷戀醜陋婦人的人,當他們的病症止息之後,那時才明白她的醜惡;
10:35
so also are those who are lovers of the love of money.
'And how,' he says, 'shall I be able to cease from this passion?' Again I will make use of the same illustration.
Just as the man who loves the unshapely woman, if he keeps company with her continually, kindles the furnace; but if
he withdraws himself a little from her, the passion gradually ebbs away little by little.
So do you too withdraw a little, yield but a little, and that small distance will become a great one.
Only make a beginning of the good deed.
Have you a superfluous house? Sell it, and give to those in need; and do not reckon that you are making it alien to yourself, but rather that you are making it truly your own.
Look not at the expense, but at the revenue.
Consider not that you are deprived of it here, but that you become its lord there.
Thus too you will be able to recount the wondrous works of God continually.
For this is what the psalm says from the very beginning.
For the lover of money cannot greatly occupy himself with this;
因為那貪愛錢財的人,不能專心致力於此;
10:47
for he is forever anxious about interest, contracts, bonds, wares, wills, the prices of fields, the prices of houses, gains, petty trafficking, and he never ceases both talking of these things and fretting over them.
But where a man's treasure is, there is his heart also.
These are the things he utters, these are the things he is anxious about;
這些就是他口中所說的,這些就是他所掛慮的;
10:50
and just as servants are anxious about their masters' affairs, so too this man is anxious about the affairs of his Master, Mammon;
正如僕人掛慮主人的事務,這人也照樣掛慮他那主人(錢財)的事務;
10:51
what has it ordered? what has been accomplished? what has not yet been accomplished, but is still to come? For this very reason I exhort you, when you have been freed from that besieging care, to occupy yourself with these narratives, recounting the wonders of God that happen day by day, both those in private and those in public, both those toward all and those toward each single person.
For the things in life are teeming with such narratives;
因為生活中處處都充滿了這類可述說的事;
10:53
and from wherever you begin, you will see the prelude gushing forth more brilliantly, whether from heaven, or from the earth, or from the air, or from the irrational creatures, whether from seeds, or from plants;
無論你從何處起頭,都必見那開端更加燦爛地湧流而出,或從天上,或從地上,或從空中,或從那些無理性的活物,或從種子,或從植物;
10:54
if you wish to recount the ancient gifts, whether those before the Law, or those under the Law, or those in grace, or those after our departure from here, or those in death itself, you will find countless seas of these narratives.
How great a folly, then, would it not be, when we have so many things to recount—things through which both delight and gain and profit come to the soul—instead to befoul our reason in the mire, recounting tales of greed and rapine? 2.
And if you please, leaving the things above, let us discourse concerning the earth—its greatness, its position, its use, its nature, its unceasing travails, the manifold and diverse offspring that come from it, the seeds, the herbs, the plants, the flowers, the meadows, the gardens.
From these again let us in our discourse cut off the shape of each tree, its position, its height, its fragrance, its fruit, its season, its service, considering all the rest as well: the fruitful part of the earth itself, and the unfruitful;
然後我們再從中,藉言語逐一剖析每一棵樹的形狀、位置、高度、香氣、果子、時節、用途,並思想其餘的一切,甚至思想這地本身那結實的部分與那不結實的部分;
10:58
for one part has brought forth iron, another bronze, another gold, another silver;
因為這一處出產鐵,那一處出產銅,另一處出產金子,又一處出產銀子;
10:59
and one produces spices, another medicines both varied and of every kind.
What could one say of the usefulness of the waters, both the fresh and the salt, of the use of the mountains, the mines of varied marbles, the springs within them, the trees suited for roofing and for building? All these are the fruit of the wilderness;
論到水的用處,無論是淡水還是鹹水,論到眾山的用處、各樣大理石的礦藏、山中的泉源、那些適於作屋頂與建築的樹木,人又能說盡甚麼呢?這一切都是曠野的出產;
10:61
this it is that nourishes all the animals and the wild beasts.
What could one say of the lakes, the springs, the rivers? For just as women who have given birth, pouring forth a fountain of milk, provide nourishment to their offspring;
論到湖泊、泉源、江河,人又能說甚麼呢?因為正如生育過的婦人湧流出乳汁的泉源,供養自己所生的兒女;
10:63
so too the earth, stretching out its rivers and springs to gardens and paradises as though they were breasts, provides abundant watering.
But in the case of women, the child must come to the breast;
但論到婦人,卻是嬰孩必須湊近乳房;
10:65
here, however, she herself stretches out her breasts on every side, bringing them down from on high.
The wilderness has yet another use as well.
For it is also more conducive to the health of the body, affording purer air to breathe, and letting one survey the whole inhabited world from on high, and philosophize in the solitude, and take a little respite from the cares of life.
What could one say of the songbirds, of the manner of life of the animals that may be caught? The wilderness has yet another use.
For often it has served the lands in place of walls, having mountains stretched up to a great height, and...
What could one say of the herbs that are born in these places, which render great service to bodies that are ailing? But if the usefulness of wildernesses and mountains is so great, so abundant the supply of good things,
if you should come to the tillable land and the level plains, consider how many springs of narratives you will see.
For just as in our body some things are bones, others sinews, others flesh;
因為正如在我們身體裡,有些是骨頭,有些是筋,有些是肉;
10:73
so too in the earth, some parts are mountains, others ravines, others fertile regions;
在這地上也照樣,有些是山嶺,有些是深谷,有些是肥沃的地區;
10:74
Why do I speak of the earth, so great an element? If you should wish to describe the shape of but a single tree, its use, its fruit, its leaves, its season, and all the rest, you will see the narrative is a vast one;
我何必單論這地,這麼大的一個元素呢?你若只願描述一棵樹的形狀、用途、果子、葉子、時節,以及其餘的一切,你就必見這可述說之事是何等浩大;
10:75
if you should proceed in your discourse to the position of the mountains, to all the rest, to man himself and the fashioning of his very body, here again you will find countless seas of narratives.
Let us therefore occupy ourselves with these things; from these will come to us the greatest delight, from these gain, from these an unspeakable love of wisdom.
Wherefore, making this clear as well, he added:
10:78
I will be glad and rejoice in Thee.
I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
This is no small kind of wisdom—to rejoice in God.
For he who rejoices in God, as he ought, casts out every worldly pleasure.
And what does 'I will be glad in You' mean? It means: having such a Master, this is my pleasure, this is my exultation.
If anyone knows this pleasure as it ought to be known, he perceives no other pleasure at all.
Since indeed all those other things are but names of pleasure, empty of the reality.
This is what lifts a man on high;
這享樂使人超然高舉;
10:86
this is what frees the soul from the body;
這享樂使靈魂脫離肉體;
10:87
this is what gives it wings toward heaven;
這享樂使人生出翅膀飛向天上;
10:88
this is what makes a man higher than the things of this life.
For if those who love beautiful bodies perceive nothing of the affairs of life, but belong to one thing only—the sight of the beloved—
因為那些愛慕美貌身體的人,尚且對生活中的事一無所覺,唯獨繫於一件事,就是所愛之人的容顏;
10:90
he who loves God, as one ought to love, what then will he perceive of the things of this life, whether pleasant or painful? Nothing.
Rather, he will be above all things, luxuriating in things immortal, since the One he loves is also of that nature.
For those who love other things are quickly and unwillingly turned to forgetfulness, when the things they loved perish and wither away;
因為那些愛別的事物的人,當所愛之物毀壞凋殘時,很快便不由自主地轉入了遺忘;
10:93
but this love is boundless, unending, holding both a greater pleasure and a fuller gain;
但這愛卻是無邊、無盡的,既有更大的享樂,也有更多的益處;
10:94
and by this again it comforts the one who loves—by never being dissolved.
I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
This is especially the custom of one who loves.
For indeed those who love sing songs to the ones they love;
因為凡有愛的人,都向所愛之人吟唱詩歌;
10:98
and even when they do not see them, they console themselves through song.
So too does the Prophet do;
先知也正是這樣行;
10:100
since it is not possible to see God, he composes songs to Him, communing with Him through his songs, kindling his longing, and seeming to behold Him;
既然人不能得見神,他便向神作歌,藉著歌詠與神相交,燃起心中的渴慕,彷彿看見了祂;
10:101
or rather, through singing and hymning he kindles longing in many.
For just as those who love speak the praises of the ones they love, and carry their names about everywhere;
因為正如有愛的人述說所愛之人的稱讚,並到處傳揚他們的名字;
10:103
so also does this one: 'I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.'
See how he has raised himself up from the earth, and hung his whole being upon that world above, dedicating himself to God.
For this reason he continually turns His name over on his lips;
因此他不住地反覆稱念祂的名;
10:106
for this too is the custom of one who loves.
'When my enemy is turned back, they shall be weakened and shall perish from before Your face.'
Another version: 'When my enemies are overthrown backward, having stumbled and perished from before Your face.'
And this too belongs especially to one who loves: to tell of the benefits continually, and to glory in them;
這也尤其屬於愛慕之人:就是不斷述說所受的恩惠,並以此為誇耀;
10:110
for this arises from love, and it in turn rekindles love.
And one would not err in saying that here he speaks also of spiritual enemies.
For these too are turned back, whenever they find a noble soul.
A spear that strikes home cuts through a soft object, but against one that is hard and resistant it accomplishes nothing; rather, its point is bent back and it falls off.
So indeed it happens with the soul as well.
For if the darts sent by the devil find it soft and slack, they sink into its depths;
因為魔鬼所射來的箭,若遇見靈魂柔軟鬆懈,便深深射入其中;
10:116
but if they find it hard and stronger, he himself departs without effect, and has wrought nothing dreadful upon it;
但若遇見靈魂堅硬剛強,牠自己便徒勞而退,絲毫不能加害於它;
10:117
and two gains come about—rather, indeed three:
for it neither harmed the soul at all, but even made it stronger, while he himself thereby became the weaker.
But observe how he proclaims the might of God.
'They shall be weakened,' he says, 'and shall perish at Thy presence.'
Again, when you hear 'presence' (or 'face'), suspect nothing bodily.
For here he signifies His working, His manifestation, and the ease of His might.
'Who looketh upon the earth, and maketh it to tremble;'
so indeed here too he says the same thing.
For His mere overseeing gaze suffices to destroy the wicked.
For if the presence of holy men makes the strength of demons feeble, much more does the presence of God.
If His lightning, when it appears, terrifies all men, consider that indestructible power of His — how it strikes terror, how it destroys the wicked.
Did you see the form of the hymns? Did you see the manner of the doxology, and how he recounts His power? And here too he teaches no small doctrine of true wisdom by saying, 'I will sing praise to Thy name, O Most High.'
'When mine enemy is turned back.'
What then is this? That not only in afflictions, but also in times of relief, he remained sober.
For many, when they are humbled by misfortunes, become more diligent;
因為許多人在遭遇不幸而被壓低時,反倒變得更加殷勤;
10:132
but by good fortune they grow more slothful and more careless;
然而一旦得了好處順境,便變得懶散怠惰、鬆懈輕忽;
10:133
which is what he says further on concerning the Jews:
'When He slew them, then they sought Him out.'
but even in prosperity he is sober and stands wide awake.
And this contributes no little to true wisdom.
'For Thou hast maintained my judgment and my cause.'
'Thou hast sat upon the throne, Thou that judgest righteousness.'
'Thou hast rebuked the nations, and the ungodly hath perished.'
'Thou hast blotted out their name for ever and ever.'
See again the wisdom of the man, how he does not himself take vengeance on his enemies, but yields the retribution to God, keeping the apostolic precept:
And it is possible to see not only this, but also that he suffered these things unjustly.
For had he not suffered unjustly, God would not have taken up his cause against them.
'Thou hast sat upon the throne, Thou that judgest righteousness.'
He speaks in a more human manner, mentioning a throne and a seat.
But the phrase 'who judgest righteousness' declares what is customary to God and what is peculiar to His very being.
For in the case of men this cannot be said.
For they do not by all means judge righteousness, even were they a thousand times just, at one time being ignorant of what is right through ignorance, at another through carelessness;
因為人並非總是按公義審判,縱使他們千萬次為義,有時因無知而不明何為公義,有時則因怠惰疏忽而不明;
10:149
but God, being free from all these, and knowing and willing it, brings forth a just verdict.
So then the phrase 'Thou hast sat upon the throne' means 'Thou didst give judgment, Thou didst take up the cause, Thou didst avenge.'
'Thou hast rebuked the nations, and the ungodly hath perished.'
Do you see how He has no need of weapons, nor of sword, nor of bows and arrows, but those things were spoken in a more human manner?
你看見了嗎?神不需要兵器,不需要刀劍,也不需要弓箭,那些說法不過是照著人情而言的;
10:153
for it is enough for God to rebuke, and those who are about to be punished perish.
And that you may learn His might, hear also what follows:
'Thou hast blotted out their name for ever, and for ever and ever.'
Thou hast destroyed them root and all, Thou hast torn them up, Thou hast so utterly abolished them that even the memory of them has perished together with them.
'The swords of the enemy have failed utterly.'
What is this? That, he says, having consumed his devices and his counsels, Thou hast made him destitute of his own weapons.
For such is the wrath of God:
it makes all things vanish away and utterly destroys them.
Or, as another interpreter teaches, saying, 'Desolate ones,'
that not their cities only, but even their desert places hast thou made to vanish away, and their cities hast thou pulled down.
the righteous one waged war, and thus he cast down his adversaries, employing neither weapons nor spears, but having the aid that comes from God.
For this reason his war too was glorious and illustrious, and the victory won by main force.
'Their memorial is perished with a sound.'
What is the meaning of 'with a sound'? Either he speaks of their utter ruin, or of the far-resounding cry of their calamities.
And this too belongs to God's providential care, namely, that He does not do these things in secret, so that by the misfortunes of some others also may become better.
So then, it declares the conspicuousness of their destruction.
'And the Lord endureth for ever.'
For 'to be seated' is in many places used with reference to the permanence of His being;
因為「坐著」一語在許多地方是指祂本體的恆久常存;
10:171
as Jeremiah also shows, when he says, 'Thou that sittest for ever.'
The prophet says this continually concerning the destruction of men, showing the unending nature of His being, and that the race of men, on the one hand, is subject to death,
but His being and His majesty, on the other hand, are without end.
And he does this by holding fear suspended over them, so that from both sides they may be trembling before Him: both because of the greatness of His glory, and because of the unending nature of His own being, and because He abides for ever, and because He ever punishes with exceeding severity.
But if it be needful also to say something according to the higher, anagogical sense, we must not decline it.
10:177
For some things it is possible even to contemplate as they stand;
因為有些事是可以就其字面直接來領會的;
10:178
but other things must be understood in this way, only as they have been spoken;
但另有些事則必須這樣去領會,僅按其所說的字句而已;
10:179
such as the saying, 'In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth;'
but other things run contrary to their literal words;
然而另有些事卻與其字面的字句相反;
10:181
such as the saying, 'Let the hind of thy love, and the colt of thy graces, keep company with thee.'
'Let them be for thyself alone, and let no stranger share them with thee.'
'Let the fountain of thy water be for thyself alone.'
For this, if thou shouldst understand it as it stands, and shouldst not flee the word but pursue only the plain meaning, is even a matter of great inhumanity, namely, not to share even water with anyone;
因為這話,你若照字面來領會,不逃避那字句,卻單單追隨那淺白的意思,那便是極大的不近人情,就是連水也不肯分給人;
10:185
but here the discourse is about a wife, that one should enjoy her with self-control, calling her a fountain of good things, and a hind, on account of the purity of the marriage union.
but in another place one must receive both the literal sense and that which is signified by it;
但在另一處,人卻必須既領受那字面的意思,也領受由其所表明的意思;
10:187
as is the case with the saying, 'Even as Moses lifted up the serpent.'
For this too we must believe, that it happened; for it did happen, and that which came of it was for a type of Christ.
So also here one would not err in taking the things that have been said as referring to Jewish matters.
'Thou hast sat upon the throne, O thou that judgest righteousness.'
'Thou hast rebuked the nations, and the ungodly hath perished;'
'thou hast blotted out their name for ever and ever.'
'The swords of the enemy have failed for ever, and thou hast pulled down cities.'
'Their memorial is perished with a sound.'
For both the calamity of those very men who crucified Christ is manifest throughout the whole inhabited world, and their cities were pulled down, and the devices of the devil have failed, since the providential care of Christ has laid hold of all things.
But leaving these things to the studious to fit together, let us hold fast to the matters before us.
'He hath prepared his throne in judgment.'
Another translator reads, 'He hath established it for judgment.'
And He Himself shall judge the world in righteousness; He shall judge the peoples in uprightness.
Do you see how by little and little he raises up his discourse? For since he had made mention of a throne, he shows the nature of that throne, that it is composed not of wood, nor of any material substance, but of righteousness.
For it is established, he says, in righteousness.
He shall judge the world in righteousness.
He foretells both the things present and the things to come.
For the universal judgment is reserved for that other place;
因為那普世的審判是留待於彼處的;
10:205
but the partial judgment takes place even here.
For even now He works many things, so that those without understanding may not suppose that existing things are governed without providence.
But if not all receive their crowns here, do not marvel.
For He has prepared a day on which He is about to judge the world;
因為祂已預備了一個日子,在那日子祂將要審判世界;
10:209
but the present time is a stadium, and a contest, and a wrestling.
For this very reason, then, not all receive according to their desert; but for those who do well the gifts are reserved in that other place, and for those who
10:211
fall away, the punishments are reserved;
墮落的人,刑罰也被存留在彼處;
10:212
but here there is forbearance and long-suffering, so that through repentance we may wash away the sins that have been committed.
Since even a murderer, so long as he is still upon the road, is master to change his course and to be delivered from punishment;
因為即使是殺人凶手,只要他仍在途中,他便有能力改變,脫離刑罰;
10:214
but when once he has come under the sentence of the judge, thereafter there is the sword, and the executioner, and the pits of doom.
So long as we are in this present life, it is possible for us, by changing our ways, to escape the retribution;
只要我們還在這現今的生命裡,我們便可能藉著改變自己而逃脫那報應;
10:216
but once we have departed to that other place, we shall lament without avail.
For He has prepared His throne for judgment.
But if anyone should take the word, 'He has prepared,' in the sense that has been stated, he will not err;
但若有人按著上文所說的意思來領會「祂已預備」這句話,他也不算有錯;
10:219
for all things are made ready, both the things of the punishments, and the things of the crowns, and the things of the sentence.
There is no delay, nor time, nor slowness with God, seeing that the living shall in no wise anticipate those who are fallen asleep, even as Paul says, that 'We who are living, who are left unto the coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede those who are fallen asleep.'
Behold the wisdom of the Prophet, how he tells of the things present, how of the things to come.
You have rebuked the nations, and the ungodly one has perished;
你曾斥責列國,惡人便滅亡了;
10:223
He has prepared His throne for judgment.
And He Himself shall judge the world in righteousness.
And this he does, so that those who are unbelieving concerning those things to come may receive the proof from the things present.
And the Lord became a refuge for the poor man.
Continually he calls himself both needy and poor, and that too, though he was in royal palaces.
But I am poor and needy.
For he knew, he clearly knew, that all human things are feebler than a shadow, and that nothing is so proper to us as virtue, but that all other things are like leaves attached from without.
For that virtue is our own is plain from this.
Wherever we go, this we carry about with us;
無論我們往何處去,我們都隨身帶著它;
10:232
This therefore is more proper to us, but the other things are far off.
As, then, we call our own the man who is near to us;
正如我們稱那與我們親近的人為自己人;
10:234
so too we call this virtue more our own than riches, since it is ever near to us.
But observe for me his gratitude also, and his soul devoted to true wisdom.
For though he had horses, and armies, and ten thousand things besides, letting go all those things, he draws to himself the help from above, and ascribes his salvation to Him.
For he did not say, 'My armies became a refuge for me,' nor 'my riches,' nor 'my walls;'
因為他沒有說「我的軍隊作了我的避難所」,也沒有說「我的錢財」,也沒有說「我的城牆」;
10:238
but, 'The Lord became a refuge for the poor man.'
'He Himself,' he says, 'has set me in safety.'
For nothing equals this refuge, whether in respect of ease or of safety.
For all other refuges can be plotted against, nor is it possible to find them quickly and ready at hand; rather they are hindered by time and place and by a thousand circumstances.
But this one you find near at hand, if only you seek it with diligence.
For 'while you are still speaking, I will say, Behold, I am here.'
And, 'I am a God near at hand, and not a God afar off.'
We have no need, then, of running, nor of travelling abroad, but even while sitting at home it is possible to draw to ourselves this refuge.
And at one time He delivers from dangers;
有時他從危險中拯救人;
10:247
at another He makes them the more illustrious and more powerful than their enemies, and both in due and fitting season.
For when those who enjoy His help remain moderate, He grants both.
But if they do not possess this virtue in a high degree, He stops at the one alone, so that they may not, by the addition of the second, fall into presumption.
And that you may learn that this often lifts a man up into presumption—Hezekiah was thereby exalted;
為要叫你明白這事往往使人被抬舉到狂妄自負的地步——希西家便由此高抬自己;
10:251
yet even so He did not overlook him, but since the prosperity of his victory had exalted his mind, He brought upon him the correction that came through sickness.
'A helper in opportune times, in afflictions.'
What does 'in opportune times' mean? 'In due season,' he says, 'seasonably.'
He speaks of a twofold opportuneness: both that He helps, and that He helps in season.
For here he calls affliction itself an opportune time.
...and it delivers a man from death, and above all draws down the inclination of God's favour.
Then sloth is done away with, and dissipation;
那時懶散被除去,放縱也被除去;
10:258
then we become more earnest in our supplications.
And just as winter is a suitable season for the tilling of the earth,
so is affliction for the tending of the soul.
For we always need His help, even when we are in prosperity;
因為我們常常需要他的幫助,即使身處順境之時也是如此;
10:262
but then most of all, when we are in afflictions.
Here he also hinted at something else:
10:264
that we too must be active.
For He helps the one who is at work.
We must not, then, lie idle, but must bring forward supplication, and almsgiving, and everything that is in our own power.
Since allies too help those who are fighting, not those who lie idle and do nothing.
If, then, you wish to enjoy God's alliance, never betray what is your own part.
Thus too was Job helped, standing firm and contending with all his strength.
Thus too were the apostles, being active.
'And let those who know Your name hope in You.'
The prophet does this continually, turning his discourse from prayer to exhortation, being a common teacher of the whole world, and setting forth the treasure of true wisdom in the midst for all.
Well did he say, 'Let those who know Your name hope.'
For those who know You, he says, and Your succour and Your alliance, possess in the hope that is set on You a sufficient anchor, a sufficient ally and an unbreakable tower, which promises not only the loosing of hardships, but also does not allow them to be thrown into confusion even while the hardships are present.
For the one who is set free from human things, and who suspends himself upon the hope from above, not only brings upon himself the swiftest deliverance from hardships, but is not even troubled or agitated in the very midst of those hardships, being helped by the hope of that anchor.
Thus indeed the three children were not only delivered from the furnace, but were not even troubled while they tarried in the furnace.
For they knew the alliance that came from God.
For this reason another too says:
'And they shall put their trust' — that is, they shall take courage and be bold.
For far greater than the security that comes from ruling power amid all its tumults is the security that comes from hope in God.
For the one is merely human, but the other is divine and invincible.
Since he had said that He became a helper, and that He became a refuge, he now shows also how this comes to pass.
How then does it come to pass? When we abide continually, hoping in Him.
But if He does not at once loose our troubles, this too is for the sake of your testing.
For just as, though able to prevent trouble from coming upon us, He allows it, that He may make us more steadfast,
so also, though able to loose it from the very outset, He delays and defers again, straining tight your firmness, and exercising your hope, and making your disposition toward Him more earnest; and He neither permits us to be always afflicted, lest we grow utterly weary, nor always to be at ease, lest we grow slack.
'For You have not forsaken those who seek You, O Lord.'
10:288
Another translator renders it: 'For You did not forsake.'
So too another says: 'Look to the generations of old and see: who ever hoped in the Lord and was put to shame? Or who ever called upon Him, and He forsook him?' And how, one asks, is God to be sought, seeing that He is everywhere? With zeal and eagerness, and with release from all the affairs of this life.
For we often have many things before our eyes and in our hands, yet do not perceive them, but go about searching for what we already possess, whenever our mind is turned toward something else.
How then is it possible to seek God? When we strain our mind toward Him there, when we free ourselves from the affairs of this life.
For the one who seeks, casting all things out of his soul, comes to that which is sought.
And it is not enough simply to seek, but one must earnestly seek out.
The one who earnestly seeks out does not seek by himself alone, but also takes others as helpers, so as to find what is sought.
But in the affairs of this life we have often sought and not found;
然而在今生的事務上,我們屢次尋找卻找不著;
10:296
yet in spiritual things this cannot happen, but it is utterly necessary that the one who seeks should find.
Let us but go forth to the seeking, and God does not allow us to labor much;
只要我們動身去尋求,神就不容我們多受勞苦;
10:298
'Sing praises to the Lord who dwells in Zion.'
'Declare among the nations His doings.'
Another translator says: 'Among the peoples His devisings.'
What do you say? He whose throne is heaven and whose footstool is the earth, in whose hand are the ends of the earth — does this One dwell in Zion? Yes.
For by 'dwelling' here he does not mean being enclosed — for His majesty is boundless — but rather the closeness of relation to the place, and His being at home with respect to it, because through this condescension He drew the Jews toward Himself;
因為此處所謂「住」,並非指被圈限於其中——祂的威嚴本是無邊無際——而是指祂與那地方的親近,以及祂對那處所懷有親密的情誼,因為神藉著這樣的俯就把猶太人吸引到祂面前;
10:303
since a dwelling too is so called in our own case for this reason, because we are on intimate terms with it.
And He is said to dwell in us too, not as being contained by us, but as being on intimate terms with us.
And 'Zion,' by way of a higher spiritual sense, is called the Church.
'For you have come to Mount Zion, and to the Church of the firstborn.'
And fittingly is the Church called a mountain, because of its firmness, its steadfastness, and its unshakenness.
For just as it is impossible to move a mountain, so neither is it possible to move the Church of God.
'Declare among the nations His doings.'
He wills that they be heralds of God's benefactions, and that they never conceal His benefactions.
And this He everywhere requires, both for the sake of those who speak and for the sake of those who hear.
For there is gain both for these and for those, if they give heed.
'For He who avenges blood has remembered them.'
Do you see what he calls the 'doings'? The benefactions.
Here he also hints at a great doctrine:
namely, that murder is not a thing dared with impunity, but is by all means avenged;
就是說,凶殺絕非可以逍遙法外的事,乃必定受到報應追討;
10:317
which Moses also shows in Genesis, when he says:
This is a proof of His boundless providence, of His far-reaching care.
But if He does not seek it out immediately, on the heels of the deed, do not be astonished;
但若祂不立刻、緊隨其後地追討,你不要驚訝;
10:320
for He grants to those who sin an occasion for repentance.
He has not forgotten the cry of the poor.
See again how the poor are held in high esteem.
Yet he does not simply speak of the poor, but of those who are poor in spirit, even as Christ says.
For these especially are heard when they pray, namely the humble in heart and the contrite.
And here he sets down two things: prayer and humility of mind.
For upon whom, He says, shall I look, but upon the humble and quiet one, and him who trembles at My words? And everywhere humility is found to be the chariot of prayer.
For the Lord is near to those who are contrite in heart.
So that the one who prays must above all be free from inflammation of anger — which Paul also requires, when he says:
without wrath and doubting.
Well did he say, 'Of the cry of the poor,' calling 'cry' the disposition of the mind, not the loudness of the voice;
他說「貧窮人的呼求」,說得好;他所說的「呼求」是指心思的態度,而非聲音的高亢;
10:331
and by saying, 'He has not forgotten,' he made clear that those men cried out continually, and did not obtain their request at the very outset.
What then is it that he says? Do not think that God has forgotten, and that for this reason He did not exact retribution;
那麼他所說的是甚麼意思呢?你們不要以為神忘記了,因此沒有追討;
10:333
for it is proper to Him to seek out such matters even when no one entreats;
因為即使無人懇求,尋察這樣的事本是祂所固有的;
10:334
but when they do entreat, and when those who entreat are humble, much more so.
Have mercy on me, O Lord; behold my humiliation at the hands of my enemies,
You who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare all Your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion.
See him ceaselessly fastened to prayer.
For even when delivered from his troubles and brought into safety, he does not desist from praying again, saying, 'Have mercy on me,' and entreating Him also for things to come.
For we always have need of God's providence, but most of all in the deliverance from evils.
For another war succeeds the former, more grievous than it — the war of laziness, the war of presumption;
因為又有一場比先前更艱難的爭戰接踵而至,就是懶散的爭戰、狂傲的爭戰;
10:341
and then the devil blows more fiercely.
So that especially after being delivered from evils, we have need of that support, in order that we may bear our prosperity with ease.
Since the Jews too, when delivered from the Egyptians, were in a grievous war — the war of presumption and of laziness —
and they perished, being unable to command themselves well.
For since they stood nobly firm neither against gluttony nor against faintheartedness, but emulated the passions of the Egyptians, these things destroyed them.
And David too, in the time of Saul, when he had been delivered from his troubles and from his other foes, once he enjoyed relief, underwent a more grievous war — that of unbridled lust — which indeed chastised him the more severely.
Therefore we must be especially afraid at that very time, when we have been delivered from our troubles.
For just as we do not fear a wild beast that is bound as much as one that has been let loose,
so also we ought not to dread wickedness so much in the time of affliction;
照樣,我們在患難之中也不必那樣懼怕邪惡;
10:350
for then it is bound fast by despondency and by the other fetters;
因為那時它已被憂愁和其他鎖鏈綑住了;
10:351
but after the relief — then we must be afraid.
For this very reason you will often see prosperity working greater harm than evils.
Thus Hezekiah too, after the victory, was on the verge of perishing.
Wherefore he too says elsewhere:
10:355
It is good for me that You humbled me.
And he seeks mercy again after his deliverance, and lays down as the ground for that mercy the fact that he suffered ill.
10:357
For 'behold my humiliation at the hands of my enemies;'
因為說「看顧我因仇敵所受的苦難」;
10:358
'You who lift me up from the gates of death.'
For I flee for refuge to my protector and guardian, who ever stretches out His hand to me.
Do you see how, in asking for things to come, he becomes thankful for things past, and speaks of a twofold benefit? For he did not say, 'He who delivers me from the gates of death,' but, 'He who lifts me up.'
For the benefaction of God did not stop at loosing the terrors, but also made them marvellous, and glorious, and more illustrious, and exalted.
And he did not say, 'From the gate,' but, 'From the gates,' indicating the multitude of the dangers.
'That I may declare all Your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion.'
That which he exhorted others to do, this he himself also does;
他所勸勉別人去行的,這事他自己也照樣去行;
10:365
for 'Declare,' he says, 'among the nations His doings.'
10:366
This I too will now do;
這事我如今也要去行;
10:367
and I will not do it in a mere ordinary way, with one, or two, or three present, but in the midst of a full assembly.
10:368
'I will rejoice in Your salvation.'
This is my crown, this is my diadem: that through You I have set up a trophy, that through You I have enjoyed salvation.
So then let us too not seek by all means to be saved, nor by every device to be delivered from our troubles, but to be saved according to God.
I say this because of those who resort to incantations in their sicknesses, and seek out other sorceries for the relief of their infirmity.
For this is not to be saved, but to be destroyed.
For the greatest salvation is to be saved through God.
'The nations are sunk down in the destruction which they made.'
By 'destruction' he means wickedness;
他所說的「敗壞」,指的是惡;
10:376
for nothing so corrupts as wickedness.
For nothing is weaker than the wicked man.
He is taken by his own weapons, just as iron is consumed by rust, and wool by the moth;
他被自己的兵器所擒,正如鐵被鏽所蝕,羊毛被蟲所蛀;
10:379
so also is the wicked man consumed by his own wickedness.
So that, even before the punishment that comes from God, wickedness itself exacts its penalty from the one who works it.
For since he had discoursed much concerning the judgment from above and concerning the inclination of God's favour, and since this judgment does not follow close on the heels of sin, but often lingers and is deferred, and this makes the many more careless, he shows that punishment stands at the very doors, and that the wicked endure it, as Paul also says:
'And receiving in themselves the recompense of their error which was due.'
And observe how strictly he uses the words.
that is, he was held fast with all force; the plot became inescapable for him.
'In this snare which they hid, their own foot was caught.'
'With bonds that cannot be loosed,' he says, 'are the wicked entangled.'
These things happened in the case of the apostles and of the Jews.
For when they warred against the apostles, they did those men no harm at all, but wrapped themselves in countless evils, falling away from their city, and their freedom, and everything else; and while the
preaching increased, those who plotted against it were being destroyed.
And those who cast the three children into the Babylonian furnace were themselves in turn taken by it;
那些把三個少年人扔進巴比倫火窯的人,自己反倒被火窯所吞滅;
10:391
which indeed also happened in the case of Daniel.
But in the case of Daniel this happened with good reason, for they themselves cast him in;
然而在但以理的事上,這是合理發生的,因為正是他們自己把他扔了進去;
10:393
but in the case of the three children, why then, when it was the king who sinned, are these men who stood before the furnace punished? Because these men who were burned up had themselves served the tyrant's command, and had worshipped the golden image.
See how he showed that the accusation against them was beyond words.
For since what was done was full of shame, therefore they conceal it, and try to escape notice.
'The Lord is known by executing judgments.'
Another version: 'He was made known by having executed judgment;'
that is, punishing, avenging, calling to account.
Do you see another kind of benefaction that comes through chastisement? For not only, he says, does it make those who are chastised more earnest, but it also causes the word of the knowledge of God Himself to shine forth.
And one might see Him rather from this turning men back to Himself.
At any rate, when He permitted the herd of swine to be carried down the steep places and to be drowned in the sea, then above all were they astonished.
And in the Old Testament, the Jews, when He slew them, then they sought after Him, as the Prophet says.
And why then does He not do this more continually? Because He does not wish the things of virtue to be accomplished by force, but rather by free choice, and men to be set right by benefaction rather than by chastisement.
And how much better, he says, is it to be good by necessity than evil by choice? It is not possible to be good by necessity.
For he who becomes good through constraint will not always be good, but once freed from the necessity, he will return to wickedness;
but he who is so trained as to become good by his own choice, having become so, remains steadfast.
'In the works of his own hands is the sinner caught.'
He did not say 'of the hands of God,' but 'of the hands of the sinner.'
Do you see how he varies his discourse, both bringing in the punishment from above and introducing the penalty that arises from wickedness itself? How does he speak of the punishment from above? 'The Lord is known,' he says, 'in executing judgments.'
How does he speak of the penalty that comes from wickedness? 'The nations were snared in the corruption which they made.'
10:411
And again the penalty that comes from evil-doing:
'In the works of his own hands is the sinner caught.'
For he does not speak of the punishment from God alone, since it often is delayed and comes slowly;
因為他不單提那從神而來的刑罰,因這刑罰往往遲延,來得緩慢;
10:414
nor of that which comes from wickedness alone, since many even linger and take delight in it;
他也不單提那從邪惡而來的懲罰,因為許多人竟然安於其中,樂此不疲;
10:415
but he makes his argument secure on both sides.
'In the works of his own hands is he caught.'
Do not therefore suppose that you are contriving devices for another when you plot against him;
所以,當你圖謀陷害別人時,切莫以為你是在為他人設計機關;
10:418
for it is for yourself that you are weaving the nets.
'Let the sinners be turned back into hell, all the nations that forget God.'
Again he dwells on the same points, showing that wickedness has chastisement allotted together with it, and that impiety begets death, and sin brings dangers.
'For the poor shall not be forgotten unto the end; the patient endurance of the needy shall not perish for ever.'
'For the expectation of the meek shall not be forgotten unto the end.'
He said well, 'unto the end,' showing that one does not always seek for relief.
For where would the works of patient endurance be displayed, if there were always to be relief? What he means is this:
The wicked shall pay the penalty, and shall suffer the uttermost.
For God will not endure that those who are wronged should for ever be exposed to plots.
By this he both comforts these and strikes fear into those, and displays the loving-kindness of God, that even the delay makes the one sort more approved, and draws the other to repentance.
the poor, not simply so, but those who are contrite in heart.
For these especially are also well fitted for patient endurance;
因為這等人尤其也最適於忍耐;
10:430
or rather, these things build up one another: humility builds up patient endurance, and patient endurance humility.
And how is humility a kind of poverty? We shall say this, that it is more suited to virtue.
For he who is rich is restless and troubled;
因為富足的人心中煩躁不安,惶惶擾攘;
10:433
but the poor man bears everything easily, being, as it were, often exercised by poverty as in a wrestling-school.
For this reason Christ also said that it is hard for one with riches to enter into the kingdom.
What does it mean, 'The patient endurance of the needy shall not perish unto the end'? Never, he says, but he shall assuredly receive his own proper fruit.
This is not possible in the affairs of this life, but one often falls short of the goal, when the labours have been lost.
For both the farmer waits, and the merchant;
因為農夫也等候,商人也等候;
10:438
yet often, through the inconstancy of the weather, both fall short of the fruit of their labours.
But in the case of God this cannot be; rather, it is wholly necessary that one attain the end.
And this is no small thing as a ground of consolation: to have confidence always concerning the end.
'Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail.'
'Let the nations be judged before you.'
Another version reads, 'And before your face.'
Having spoken of the wickedness that holds sway over the greater part of mankind, and having recounted their villainy, their rapacities, their acts of greed, their murders, he calls upon God for the succor of those who are wronged.
For such are the bowels of compassion of the saints: not to be anxious for their own concerns alone, but, as though for a single household—the whole inhabited world—or for a single body—the multitude of mankind—so to make their entreaty to God.
'Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail.'
But what is the meaning of 'Arise, O Lord'? It means: Come forth, he says; give aid; punish those who commit injustice.
And well did he use those bare names, saying, 'Arise,' and, 'Let not man prevail';
so as to make plain that it is the worthless one, the one from the earth, the one who is dust and ashes.
'Let the nations be judged before you.'
What does this mean? Let them pay the penalty, he says, for their sins.
They have not become better through your longsuffering;
demand an accounting for the outrages they have dared to commit.
'Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them.'
'Let the nations know that they are but men.'
What is the meaning of 'Appoint a lawgiver over them'? Since, he says, they do everything as though under their own law, unwilling to pay any penalty, come forth, and let punishment be to them in place of admonition.
This also another writer declared, saying, 'Appoint, O Lord, a terror over them.'
See how he does not seek their punishment, but their admonition and correction, and that they should no longer live lawlessly.
For the punishment will be to them, he says, in place of admonition;
他說:因為刑罰要臨到他們,以代替勸誡;
10:460
and not to them only, but to others as well.
And that you may learn how great the gain is, and how it checks the disease, listen to what follows.
'Let the nations know,' he says, 'that they are but men.'
And what he means is this:
Many have lost even this awareness; they have forgotten their own nature, they have run aground into madness, they have become ignorant of themselves.
And well did he add the word 'Always,' to make plain that it should be so not only in adversities, but also in prosperities.
For indeed, if you chastise them now, while the fear is at its height and the memory of the dreadful things that befell them is fresh, then even should they come into prosperity, they will know their own nature.
Do you see how he makes his supplication on their behalf, and asks that their madness be corrected? For to be ignorant of oneself is more grievous than the uttermost madness and frenzy.
For the one is a disease of necessity, but the other of a corrupted will.
'Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you overlook us in seasons of opportunity, in tribulations?' These things the Prophet speaks in the person of the afflicted, entreating and beseeching, not accusing;
「耶和華啊,你為什麼站在遠處?在急難的時候為什麼隱藏?」先知這樣說,是代表那些受苦之人的口,懇切祈求,並非控訴;
10:470
since many of the afflicted, out of their pain, ask that the judgment come before the fitting time;
因為許多受苦的人,由於疼痛,便求那審判在合適的時候之前就臨到;
10:471
just as those who are undergoing surgery, while the incision is not yet complete, beg the physician to withdraw his hand;
正如那些正接受手術的人,在切割尚未完成之時,便懇求醫生把手縮回;
10:472
asking a favor that is harmful, and this because they cannot bear the pains.
And often they cry out to the physicians, 'You have tortured me, you have destroyed me, you have killed me';
他們常向醫生喊叫說:「你折磨了我,你毀了我,你殺了我」;
10:474
but these are not the words of the understanding, but of the pain.
In just this way many of the fainthearted also speak in their tribulations, being unable to bear the sufferings.
And Zephaniah too employs a like manner of speech.
But these things belonged to the Old Covenant, when the contests were of measured proportion;
但這些事屬於舊約時代,那時所面對的爭戰是有分寸限度的;
10:478
such things are far removed from the higher wisdom that is in the New Covenant.
When the ungodly man exalts himself in pride, the poor man is set aflame;
當那不敬虔的人驕傲自誇時,貧窮人就如同被火焚燒;
10:480
they are caught in the schemes which they devise.
For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul, and he who does wrong is blessed.
The sinner has provoked the Lord to anger.
The Prophet, clothing himself in the guise of a suppliant and interceding on behalf of those who are wronged, speaks also of the sufferings that befall them, which belong to human weakness;
先知以懇求者的姿態披戴己身,為那些受欺壓的人代求,也述說臨到他們身上的苦難,那正是屬乎人性軟弱的;
10:484
namely, that even before the punishment and the vengeance, he who is wronged is in anguish, unable to bear the prosperity of the wicked.
And this too is no small punishment.
Then he asks that they may pay the penalty, and that their plots may be turned back upon themselves;
接著他祈求他們受到應得的懲罰,願他們的詭計反轉臨到他們自己身上;
10:487
and he speaks of a kind of wickedness that is unbearable.
What kind is this? That the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul.
For the very things over which he ought to have hidden his face, the very things, he says, of which he ought to be ashamed, for these he is admired and praised.
How then could there henceforth be any cure for this, when wickedness itself is praised? For indeed this happens even now.
This man is admired as a man of power;
這人因是有權勢的而受人驚嘆;
10:492
that man as one who takes vengeance on his enemies;
那人因是向仇敵報復的而受人驚嘆;
10:493
another as prudent, because he has gathered up the goods of all;
又有人因是精明的而受人驚嘆,因他把眾人的財物都聚斂到自己手中;
10:494
and when he has destroyed himself, they still speak well of him;
甚至當他敗壞了自己時,人們仍為他說好話;
10:495
and they have no thought at all for spiritual things.
Nowhere is the man who keeps to himself quickly praised, nor the one who loves poverty;
那安分不惹是非的人,那愛慕貧窮的人,從沒有一處是輕易受人稱讚的;
10:497
but rather the money-maker, the huckster, the flatterer, the man who submits to servile services for the sake of nothing useful.
These things the Prophet laments, that wickedness has so gained the upper hand that it even preens itself and speaks with boldness; and, what is yet more grievous, that it is not ashamed, nor does the man merely praise himself for what he does, but he has others as well to praise him.
What could be worse than this madness? The sinner has provoked the Lord to anger.
Another translator says, Because the lawless one, praising according to the desire of his soul, and blessing the covetous man, has provoked the Lord to anger.
When his wrath is exalted, he does not seek after Him.
Another renders it, Because he has sung praises according to the longing of his soul, and, blessing the covetous man, has reviled the Lord.
The ungodly man, in the loftiness of his wrath, will by no means seek Him out.
But the Seventy render it, The sinner has provoked the Lord to anger;
但七十士譯本譯作:罪人惹動了主的怒氣;
10:505
according to the greatness of his wrath, he will not seek Him out.
Do you see to what a pitch the works of wickedness have advanced? Why do I say, he asks, that he grieves the poor? He provokes God Himself to anger.
And according to the greatness of his wrath, he says, he will not seek out God.
But another translator shows this to refer to the ungodly man, saying, Of his loftiness, that is, of his senselessness, of his arrogance.
Do you see the intensity of the madness, and its corruption? Toward his own kinsmen he is an enemy and a foe, estranged from virtue, a lover and praiser of wickedness.
And well did another say, God is not in all his thoughts;
另一位譯者說得好:神不在他的一切意念之中;
10:511
showing that he does not seek after God, because he is filled with darkness, because he does not have the fear of Him before his eyes.
But just as a rheum darkens the pupil of the eye, so does wickedness darken the understanding, and hurls it down over precipices.
God is not before him.
Another says, Through all his devisings.
His ways are profaned at every season; Your judgments are taken away from before his face.
Another says, Your judgment is removed.
Do you see the fruit of wickedness? His light is quenched, his reasonings are blinded, he is given over as a captive to evil.
For just as the blind man continually falls into pits, so also does this man; since he does not have the fear of God before his eyes, he spends his whole life in wickedness;
因為正如瞎眼的人不斷跌進坑裡,這人也是如此;既然他眼中沒有對神的敬畏,他便終其一生沉溺在邪惡之中;
10:519
Not now in virtue and now in vice, but always in vice; and he remembers neither hell, nor the coming judgment, nor the reckoning to be given.
Having cast out these helps, like a ship without ballast he is given over to wicked winds and savage waves, since there is no one to guide his understanding aright.
Do you see the wicked man undergoing his punishment in his very wickedness? For what is more grievous than an unbridled horse, than a ship without ballast, than a maimed and crippled man? (10)
But more wretched than all these is the man who lives in wickedness, who has quenched the light that comes from the fear of God, and has been handed over as a captive.
He shall have dominion over all his enemies.
For he said in his heart:
I shall not be shaken from generation to generation, without evil.
Another version has: He blows away all his enemies, saying in his heart:
I shall not be overturned from generation to generation.
Do you see the madness? Do you see the unspeakable ruin? Do you see the destruction growing little by little? Do you see the things counted blessed among the foolish, which are full of much misery, and how he sinks down? He is praised in his sins, he is blessed in his acts of injustice.
This is the first pit, and it is enough to break the neck of one who does not take heed.
Therefore we ought rather to welcome those who blame and correct us than those who praise and flatter us to our ruin.
For these men corrupt the dull-witted and push them on to greater wickedness;
因為這等人敗壞那些愚鈍的人,把他們推向更大的惡;
10:532
just as, by puffing up this sinner too, they trained him into folly.
Therefore Paul too says this very thing to the Corinthians concerning the man who had committed fornication:
And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned.
One ought to mourn much over the sinner, not to praise him.
Do you see how perverse is wickedness, that not only is it not accused, but is even applauded? From this point, from his own folly and from the praises, he intensified his wickedness, forgot the fear of God and His judgments;
你看見這惡何等乖謬嗎?它非但不被指責,反倒被讚許。從此,這人因著自己的愚妄和眾人的稱讚,愈發加增他的邪惡,忘記了敬畏神,也忘記了神的審判;
10:537
from this point he forgot even his own nature.
For he who forgets the judgments of God comes in time to be ignorant even of himself.
I shall not be shaken from generation to generation, but shall be without evil.
What is more senseless than this way of thinking—that a man, being mortal and perishable, entangled in transient affairs and subject to countless changes, should imagine such things? And whence does this come? From folly.
For when a senseless man enjoys great prosperity, prevails over his enemies, and is praised and admired, he becomes the most wretched of all.
For because he does not expect any change, he neither bears his prosperity with self-control; and falling into adversity, being untrained and unpracticed, he is troubled and thrown into confusion.
But he ought even in prosperity to have expected adversity every single day;
但他本應在順境中,天天都預料著逆境的來臨;
10:544
For the fear which I feared has come upon me, and that which I dreaded has met me.
I was neither at peace, nor at rest, nor did I take repose;
我不得安寧,不得平靜,也不得安息;
10:546
Remember the time of famine in the time of abundance, of poverty and want in the day of wealth.
But this man, being utterly corrupted, does not consider the human condition, but supposes that his affairs are unshakable because of his good fortune;
但這人既已徹底敗壞,就不思想人生的實情,反因自己的亨通,以為他的境況永不動搖;
10:548
which is the ground of the utmost folly and corruption, and the starting-point of destruction.
Do not therefore call blessed those who are rich, those who prevail over their enemies, those who are praised for these things.
For these are great pits and precipices to those who do not take heed, hurling them down to the very bottom of ungodliness.
Whose mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit.
Under his tongue are toil and pain.
He sits in ambush with the rich in secret places, to slay the innocent.
Another version has: Lying in wait beside the courts.
His eyes are fixed upon the poor man.
He lies in wait in secret like a lion in his den.
Another version has: As in his enclosure.
He lies in wait to seize the poor man, to seize the poor man by drawing him in.
In his snare he will bring him low.
He will crouch down and fall, when he has gained the mastery over the poor.
Another version: But he who is crushed shall be bowed down, when he falls upon the weak together with his mighty ones.
Do you see how he too has become a wild beast? For just as though sketching a wild beast, so the Prophet discourses concerning him, holding up to public view his frauds, his ambushes, his plots.
What could be more wretched than such a man, and what poorer, when he stands in need of the poor man's goods? Shall we then, tell me, call this man rich? Why, then we must call the thief and the burglar rich too.
For what if he does not break into the courts of law? What if he does not come by night, but with guile puts out the light of him who sits in judgment? What if he does not fall upon men while they sleep, but while all are awake? For such a one is the more brazen.
Since even among robbers, the laws punish more severely those who steal by day.
Do you see the poverty? Do you see the cruelty? Poverty, because he covets what belongs to the poor man;
你看見那貧窮嗎?你看見那殘忍嗎?說是貧窮,因為他貪圖窮人所有的;
10:567
cruelty, because he is not even softened by the man's misfortune, but the very poverty which he ought to pity and to relieve, this he grinds down still further.
Yet nevertheless he does not work these deeds without punishment;
然而,他行這些事終究並非能免於刑罰的;
10:569
but when he prevails, when he seems to have gotten the upper hand, when he supposes himself to be unconquerable, then he shall perish;
反倒是當他得勝、當他看似佔了上風、當他自以為無人能敵的時候,那時他就要滅亡;
10:570
so that both the resourcefulness of God may be made manifest, and the patient endurance of the poor, and this man's incorrigibility, and the forbearance of God's long-suffering.
For this reason justice does not follow hard upon his heels, since God through His long-suffering is calling him to repentance;
正因如此,公義並不立時緊隨在他腳後追上,因為神藉著祂的長久忍耐,是在呼召他悔改;
10:572
but when he gains nothing from the long-suffering, then God admonishes him by punishment.
For these men, though wronged, suffered no harm;
至於這些人,他們雖然受了冤屈,卻並未受害;
10:574
nay, they even became better and more illustrious as a result of the affliction;
不但如此,他們反倒因這苦難而變得更加良善、更加光彩榮耀;
10:575
while God displayed His own long-suffering, in bearing with and enduring evil patiently, and along with the long-suffering also His strength and His abundant resource;
而神則顯明了祂自己的長久忍耐,就是包容並忍耐惡事,並且在這忍耐之外,還顯明祂的能力與豐盛的作為;
10:576
for it is when He is mightier than Himself that He then prevails over him;
因為正是當祂比祂自己更顯大能之時,祂便勝過了他;
10:577
but this man, having remained incorrigible, pays the uttermost penalty.
And this is no small lesson in self-restraint for those who prosper.
Therefore, when you prevail over your enemies, and everything is borne along for you with a fair wind, do not take courage to live in wickedness, but rather then be afraid.
For your wickedness increases, the grounds of your defense are taken away, and your claim to pardon is cut off, so long as you remain wicked.
For he has said in his heart:
He has turned away His face, so as never to see.
See to what a pit of destruction he descends, what manner of tenets he gathers together, which for very shamelessness he does not dare to bring out into the open, but turns them over within himself, warring against the truth, and casting into shadow things clearer than the sun, because of the blindness of his own understanding.
Arise, O Lord my God, let Your hand be lifted high.
Another version: Lift up Your hand.
For what reason has the ungodly man provoked God? For he has said in his heart:
You see, for You perceive trouble and wrath, so as to deliver him into Your hands.
Another version: You have seen, for You will look upon trouble and provocation, so as to give it into Your hand.
Another version: That they may be given into Your hands.
The lawless man says these things, the one who plunders, the one who is grasping, as though he would pay no penalty;
那不法的人說這些話,就是那搶奪的、那貪婪的,彷彿他必不受懲罰似的;
10:591
but the Prophet, doing away with his tenets, fills up the discourse concerning long-suffering.
He has turned away His face, so as never to see;
祂已轉臉不看,永不理會;
10:593
Yet You do see, and You do perceive, and You are long-suffering, until they themselves fall into Your hands.
What does it mean, Until they themselves be given into Your hands? He has spoken in a manner more suited to human understanding.
You wait, You bear with evil patiently, so that by the excess of their wickedness they may be delivered up.
For You are able even from the very beginning to seize and to subdue him;
因為你原是從起初就能夠擒拿並制伏他的;
10:597
but unutterable is the ocean of Your forbearance, in that You look on and do not proceed against them, but wait for them to come to repentance.
But if they are unwilling, then You punish, when they have gained nothing from the long-suffering.
For that He takes great account of those who are wronged, listen how the psalmist establishes this very thing through what follows.
'To You the poor man is left; You were a helper to the orphan.'
10:601
And what he means is this:
This is Your work, this is Your special task.
For He would not have abandoned what is His own and betrayed it.
For just as it belongs to the craftsman to build, and to the pilot to steer the vessel straight, and to the sun to give light,
so also it is Yours to stand as protector of orphans, to stretch out a hand to the poor.
No one is such a champion of these as You, but You alone.
For the word 'is left' presents just this.
'No other,' he says, 'but You alone are the protector of orphans and of the poor.'
'Break the arm of the sinner and the wicked man.'
'His sin shall be sought out, and it shall by no means be found on account of it.'
Another version: 'Let his ungodliness be sought out, that he himself may not be found.'
He does not simply ask that the sinner be crushed, but his strength, his dominion, the fuel of his wickedness.
Then he asks that the man submit to a reckoning and give account of his deeds; and showing the magnitude of his injustice, he says:
'If this happens, he will not even be able to stand, nor will he appear, but he will perish, be gone, be utterly rooted out and destroyed, when his deeds are examined.'
Let no one, then, bewail his orphanhood, let no one lament his poverty.
For by so much as these are intensified, by so much will the help of God be increased.
Let no one be haughty over his power, nor puff himself up.
For this ground is treacherous and full of precipices, and it overturns with great ease those who do not take heed.
'The Lord shall reign forever, and to the age of the age.'
Here he answers those who are troubled and disturbed because sinners do not pay the penalty at once.
Why, he says, are you afraid? Why do you dread? Is the Judge but for a season? Does His kingdom have an end? Even if He does not give it now, He will give it beyond all doubt.
For He who demands the reckoning abides, and reigns perpetually.
'You nations shall perish out of His land.'
'The desire of the poor You have heard, O Lord;'
'Your ear has attended to the preparation of their heart.'
Another version: 'Your ear has hearkened to the purpose of their heart.'
Another version: 'You will prepare their heart; Your ear will give heed.'
'To judge for the orphan and the lowly, that man may no more presume to boast upon the earth.'
Another version: 'To judge for the orphan and the crushed.'
Do you see how the prophet makes a fuller discourse concerning care for the wicked? For it is these especially who fare badly.
For to the one who is wronged the loss is but of money, but to the other the danger concerns the last things.
For what of it, even if they do not perceive the sickness in which they lie? This is an intensification of insensibility, and for this very reason they most of all ought to be pitied.
Since children too take no account of things truly fearful, but often even thrust their hands into fire, while at empty masks they are terrified and tremble at the sight.
The covetous resemble these children: dreading poverty, which is not fearful but is rather a ground of security;
貪婪的人就像這些孩童:懼怕貧窮——貧窮本非可怕,反倒是安穩的根基;
10:635
yet setting great store by unjust wealth and covetousness, which is more fearful than any fire.
For everywhere covetousness is an evil.
This, then, the Prophet urges to be cut off entirely, threatening, terrifying, calling upon God to rise up for the punishment of such insensibility.
'You nations shall perish out of His land'—threatening them with utter destruction, and asking Him to become a helper and avenger of those who are wronged, so that these might take breath and those might be brought to their senses.
Let no one, therefore, pursue an abundance of riches.
From this source many evils are bred for those who give it no heed:
madness, sloth, envy, vainglory, and many others far more numerous than these.
But, that you may be delivered from all these things, cut out the root;
但為叫你們脫離這一切,就要把那根子砍除;
10:643
for while it does not remain, the wicked shoots do not sprout.
For this reason these things also have been said, not that we should merely hear them,
but that we should also amend our ways, and display much virtue in Christ Jesus;
而是叫我們也加以改正,並在基督耶穌裡顯出豐盛的美德;
10:646
to whom be the glory and the dominion unto the ages of ages.
