← ch. 22ch. 24 →
23:1
The Lord said to my Lord.
Let us rouse ourselves, I beg you, and brace ourselves.
For this psalm discourses to us of exceedingly great subjects of contemplation, standing arrayed not against one form of heresy, but against many and diverse ones.
For it is drawn up in battle-line against the Jews, and against Paul of Samosata, and against those who hold the views of Arius, and against those who hold the views of Marcion, and against the Manichaeans, and against all those who disbelieve in the resurrection.
Since, then, the battle-array is against so many, we too have need of many eyes, so as to observe the wrestling-bouts with exactness.
For in the contests held out of doors, even if some one of the holds in them be overlooked, it did the spectator no harm;
因為在外面舉行的競技中,即使其中某一個招式被人忽略了,對觀眾也毫無損害;
23:7
for that theatre was gathered together not for the sake of instruction, but of amusement.
But here, if you do not know with exactness from what quarter he draws up his line, and from what quarter we strike him, you will sustain no ordinary loss.
In order, then, that you may not suffer this, rouse up your mind, make your hearing alert.
We strike the Jews first, and against them we draw up our line, taking the Prophet from his very words as our ally against them.
For when we say that these things were plainly spoken concerning Christ, these interpretations they will not accept, but they fabricate certain others.
Let us therefore first refute their argument, and then demonstrate our own.
And meanwhile let us now ask them: who is the lord of this righteous man? For it says, The Lord said to my Lord.
For he does not here make mention of one person only, but of one conversing with another.
Whom, then, do they say is the one speaking? God.
23:16
And the one hearing? Abraham.
But others say Zerubbabel, and others yet another;
但另有人說是所羅巴伯,還有人說是別人;
23:18
just like men who are drunk and utter nothing consistent, or rather like men walking in the dark and colliding with one another.
What then, tell me, is Zerubbabel lord of David? And how could that have any reason, seeing that he too, as a mark of great honour, was called David? And what follows also makes it plain that nothing here is said concerning Zerubbabel, nor concerning David;
那麼,請告訴我,所羅巴伯豈是大衛的主嗎?這怎能說得通呢?因為連他自己,作為極大的尊榮,也被稱為大衛。而接下來的話也清楚表明,這裡所說的既不是關於所羅巴伯,也不是關於大衛;
23:20
for none of them was honoured with the priesthood;
因為他們中間沒有一位是蒙受祭司職分之尊榮的;
23:21
but here the words are spoken concerning one who possesses a priesthood strange and marvellous.
For it says, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
But for the present let us unfold what lies before us.
For they say also certain other things staler than these, alleging that these words were spoken concerning the people;
因為他們還說了些比這更陳腐的話,聲稱這些話是論到百姓說的;
23:25
but neither did the people become a priest, nor could the other things spoken ever be fitted to it.
Wherefore, passing this too by as stale, and needing no elaborate construction for its refutation, let us bring into the midst another thing which they say.
For what again do others say? That the servant of Abraham speaks these things concerning his own lord.
And what could again be staler than this? For what has Abraham's servant to do here? And where did his lord become a priest, seeing that he himself made use of Melchizedek as priest, and sought the blessings that came from him? And how could it stand to reason that concerning Abraham should be said, From the womb, before the morning star, I begot you? And how could these things be fitted either to David, or to Zerubbabel, or to the people? For what is said is above human nature.
And the words, Sit at my right hand, what interpretation could they bear, if those persons were the subjects intended? Not a single one.
And how did He say to Abraham, Sit at my right hand, seeing that Abraham deems even to stand beside the angels to be worthy of the greatest honour? But what is their wise argument? And how, he says, do you bring in another Lord, when the Scripture expressly says:
The Lord your God is one Lord, and Him alone shall you serve;
耶和華你的神是獨一的主,你只要事奉祂;
23:32
and besides Him there is no God? To whom, then, tell me, is that word spoken? Chiefly indeed those words were spoken against your ingratitude, O Jew.
For why was nothing of the sort said to Abraham, nor to Isaac, nor to Jacob, nor to Moses, but to you alone, when, having come out of Egypt, you made yourself a calf? For what reason, tell me? But if you yourself are at a loss, learn the cause from me.
For since, having gone out, you made a calf for yourself, and were initiated into Baal-Peor, and were driven in your frenzy toward a throng of gods, bringing in that lawless polytheism, it was to curb your disease that, in contradistinction to the gods which are not, He set down the word 'One'—not for the setting aside of the Only-begotten.
For otherwise, on what account was it said at the very outset, straightway:
«Let us make man according to our image and after our likeness»? And again, «Come, and let us go down and confound their tongues.»
And again David says, «Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.»
But if Moses says, «The Lord thy God is one Lord,»—
it was your own weakness that became the cause of these things.
And why do you marvel if this took place in the matter of doctrines, when even in the matter of practices God led His discourse down from the more perfect to the lesser things, condescending to our weakness? Wherefore also He permitted a man to put away one wife and to bring in another, though He had not so legislated from the beginning.
And concerning foods He made much distinction, and yet at the beginning He had said the very opposite, that «As the green herb have I given you all things.»
And concerning place He laid down many laws, not permitting prayers to be performed everywhere, and yet neither had He legislated this from the beginning.
But He appeared to Abraham even in the land of the Persians, and in Palestine, and everywhere;
反而祂在波斯之地向亞伯拉罕顯現,也在巴勒斯坦,並且在各處顯現;
23:44
and to Moses afterward in the wilderness.
What then? Does Scripture, one asks, contend with itself? God forbid!
but according to the season it dispenses each thing toward what is profitable, correcting the weakness of each generation.
For this very reason it was said to you:
«The Lord thy God is one Lord.»
But that He has also a Son, the prophets laid up beforehand in their books, and they neither spoke it too plainly, so as not to injure your weakness;
至於祂也有一位子,眾先知早已預先存放在他們的書卷裡;他們並沒有說得太明顯,免得傷害你的軟弱;
23:50
nor did they hide it, so as to give you afterward to come to your senses, and to gather out of your own books the doctrines of the truth.
Thus most of all shall we be able to show that the prophets are indeed prophets, when we hold discourse with the Greeks, and we shall demonstrate the Old Testament to be exceedingly worthy of credit.
For if you take this away, how will you sew up the mouth of the Greek? For what will you say? The exodus out of Egypt, and the things prophesied concerning you? But he will not readily accept them.
But if you expound the things spoken concerning Christ in the Old Testament, and show the truth of the events bearing witness to the fulfillment of the prophecy, he will not even be able to withstand you.
But if you lay hold of our writings, O Jew, how will you make your defense on behalf of the Old Testament? And should someone say to you, «Whence are the things of Moses true?»—what will you say? That we believed them.
Then much rather our writings as well;
既是如此,那就更該相信我們的著作了;
23:56
καὶ γὰρ.
for indeed we too believed;
因為我們也照樣信了;
23:57
and you are but one nation, whereas we are the whole inhabited world; and Moses did not so persuade you as Christ persuaded us;
並且你們不過是一個民族,我們卻是普天下的人;摩西說服你們,遠不及基督說服我們那樣有力;
23:58
and your things have ceased, whereas ours stand fast.
But will you appeal to the predictions? Nay, the predictions among us are more.
So then, if you take away our things, you cast your own into shadow as well.
But will you appeal to the signs? Nay, you have no sign of Moses to show;
難道你要訴諸那些神蹟麼?其實你連摩西的一件神蹟也拿不出來給人看;
23:62
whereas we have many and diverse signs of Christ still coming to pass even now, and predictions shining brighter than the sun.
But will you appeal to the laws? Nay, these of ours are more philosophic.
But what then? You came out while the Egyptians hindered you? Nay, it is not an equal thing to prevail while the whole inhabited world makes war, and to gain the mastery over the Egyptians alone.
And I say these things, not as bringing the Old Testament into conflict with the [New],
but wishing to muzzle the perverseness of the Jews.
For both those things and these have been given and brought about by the same God;
因為那些事和這些事,都是由同一位神所賜下、所成就的;
23:68
but this is what I wish to establish: that the Jew, in taking away the prophecies concerning Christ, does injury to the greater part of the prophecies, and would not be able clearly to show the nobility of the Old Testament, unless he accepted the New.
And that the things spoken are not concerning a mere man is plain to those who have understanding: from His being told «Sit thou at my right hand»; from His being named Lord in like manner with the Lord who speaks; from His having been begotten out of the womb before the morning star; from His being a priest according to the order of Melchizedek; and from its being said, «With thee is thy dominion.»
But if yet another Jew rises up against us, one carrying about the mask of a Christian—I mean Paul of Samosata—it is possible to speak against this man too even from the New Testament.
Nevertheless, lest we should seem to abandon the matters before us and to go off to another quarter of the battle-line, let us strike this man too from here.
What then does this man also say? That He was, he says, a mere man, and that from the time He came into being from Mary, from that time only does He have His existence.
What then, tell me, will you say to that saying which declares:
'From the womb before the morning star I have begotten thee.' But the other things that have been spoken against the Jews must be said against those who spring from them as well.
And of this we are not the cause, but these very men themselves, who hold so great a kinship of doctrines with them;
而這一點的緣由不在我們,乃在這些人自己,他們的教義與那些人有如此深的親緣關係;
23:76
wherefore we shall use the very same weapons against them.
For those who wage war in like manner must be struck with the same darts.
What then does the sharing of the throne signify? For here equality of honour is shown, which is sufficient to silence those who think the things of Arius.
For this reason Christ also, to the Jews who said that He is the Son of David, added, saying:
'How then does David in the Spirit call Him Lord, saying:'
'The Lord said unto my Lord,'
'Sit thou at my right hand.' And going on, Paul also raises the discourse concerning the dispensation, interpreting it more clearly, and to Marcion and Mani, and to all who are sick with such notions, he deals a mortal blow, saying:
for he interprets, with the understanding that befits him, how He became a priest after the order of Melchizedek.
But let us return again to the matter before us.
'The Lord said unto my Lord,'
Do you see the equality of honour? For where there is a throne, there is the symbol of kingship;
你看見那同等的尊榮了嗎?因為哪裡有寶座,哪裡就有王權的象徵;
23:87
where there is one throne, there is equal honour of the same kingdom.
'Who makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire.'
'Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.'
So also Daniel sees all creation standing by, both angels and archangels, and the Son of Man coming upon the clouds, and reaching even unto the Ancient of Days.
But if to speak thus offends some, let them hear that He sits at the right hand, and let them be freed from the offence.
For just as we do not say that He is greater than the Father, because He has the most honoured seat at the right hand,
so neither do you say He is less and inferior, but of equal honour and equal.
For this is what the sharing of the seat makes plain.
'Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.'
And who are the enemies? Hear Paul saying:
'then they that are Christ's at His coming, then the end.'
'For He must reign, till He has put all His enemies under His feet.'
Do you see the harmony of the prophetic and apostolic words? For there indeed he says, 'Until I make thine enemies thy footstool';
你看見先知的話與使徒的話彼此和諧一致嗎?因為在那裡他說:「等我使你的仇敵作你的腳凳」;
23:100
and here, 'Till He has put all His enemies.'
But neither the 'Until' there, nor the 'Till' here, are limits of time.
Since how would that prophetic saying stand, which declares:
'an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom, a kingdom which shall not be destroyed, and of His kingdom there shall be no end'—if indeed He is to reign only up to this point? Do you see that we must not attend simply to the words, but ascend to the meanings? And when you hear the Prophet saying that the Father puts them under His feet, be not at all troubled here.
For these things are not said as though the Son were powerless.
For Paul says that He Himself puts the enemies under His feet;
因為保羅說是祂自己把仇敵放在自己的腳下;
23:106
'For He must reign, till He has put the enemies under His feet.'
And again he ascribes the whole to Him, saying:
'When He shall deliver up the kingdom to God, even the Father, when He shall have abolished all rule and authority.'
That is to say, when He shall have set the kingdom aright, He will bring to an end all rule.
For this is what 'He shall abolish' means.
But in saying that the whole is His, he does not separate the Father from Him, just as neither does he divide the Son from the Father.
23:112
For indeed the things of the One are the other's;
因為那一位所有的,也是這一位的;
23:113
'All Mine are Thine, and Thine are Mine.'
When, therefore, you hear that the Father subdued, do not suppose that the Son stands outside the achievement;
所以,當你聽見說父使萬物降服的時候,切莫以為子在這功業之外;
23:115
and when you learn that the Son subdued, do not say that the Father is a stranger to these things.
For the achievements are held in common, just as all the works also are common.
The Lord shall send forth the rod of Thy power out of Sion.
By 'the rod of power' he means power itself.
He makes mention of Sion because it was from there that the achievements took their beginning.
For there He gave the Law, there He wrought the wonders;
因為神在那裏頒賜律法,也在那裏行了諸般奇事;
23:121
and it was from there that the preaching, once begun, was stretched out to every part of the inhabited world.
But if you wish to take what is said in a higher, spiritual sense, hear Paul when he says:
But ye are come unto Mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the Church of the firstborn.
The Lord shall send forth the rod of Thy power out of Sion.
The rod is at one time chastening and beneficent, and at another time consoling, and a symbol of kingship.
And that it is both of these, hear the Prophet when he says:
Thy rod and Thy staff, they have comforted me.
Thou shalt shepherd them with a rod of iron;
你必用鐵杖牧養他們;
23:129
as a potter's vessels shalt thou dash them in pieces.
What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love and in the spirit of meekness? You see how it belongs to correction.
There shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall spring up out of its root;
從耶西的根必發出一條枝子,從他的根上必生出一朵花來;
23:132
Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever;
神啊,你的寶座是永永遠遠的;
23:133
a rod of uprightness is the rod of Thy kingdom.
Here he has called the power a rod, that power with which the disciples ran throughout the inhabited world, setting characters aright, and leading the nature of men from a certain irrational wickedness to that which is rational.
For, He says, Go ye and make disciples of all the nations.
Moses too had a rod, but he received an operation of God, through which he worked in all things.
And that rod divided rivers, but this one shattered the ungodliness of the inhabited world.
Nor would anyone err in calling the Cross also a rod of power.
For this rod turned about both land and sea, and filled them with much power.
With this rod the apostles went forth into every part of the inhabited world, and accomplished all those things.
Carrying this, they brought all things to pass, taking their beginning from Jerusalem.
And rule Thou in the midst of Thine enemies.
Behold a prophecy shining brighter than the sun.
And what is the meaning of, Rule Thou in the midst of Thine enemies? It is as much as to say, in the midst of the Greeks, in the midst of the Jews.
For thus the Churches were planted in the midst of the cities;
因為眾教會正是這樣栽種在各城的中間;
23:146
thus they prevailed and gained the upper hand.
This is a proof of the splendid victory: to have raised up the altars in the very midst of the foe, to be as sheep in the midst of wild beasts, and as lambs among wolves.
For this too He said when He sent them forth:
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves;
看哪,我差你們去,如同羊進入狼群;
23:150
which was no less than the former wonder.
For to prevail while shut in among enemies is no less a thing than, being in the position of sheep, to prevail over wolves;
因為被圍困在仇敵中間仍能得勝,這與身處羊的地位卻勝過群狼,二者並無高下;
23:152
nay, it is even far greater, and that being but twelve in number they drew the inhabited world to themselves.
And rule Thou in the midst of Thine enemies.
He did not say, 'Conquer in the midst of your enemies,' but 'Have dominion,' in order to show that the trophy did not come from a pitched battle, but that His lordship was exercised by simple command.
For thus did the apostles prevail, having Christ within themselves, and doing all things as if by a command.
Hence every house lay open to them, and those who believed obeyed more readily than any slave, giving over their possessions and laying the proceeds at the apostles' feet, not daring to take anything even for their own need;
因此,家家戶戶都向他們敞開,信的人比任何僕人都更順從地聽命,他們變賣所有的,把價銀放在使徒腳前,甚至連為自己所需用的也不敢取用;
23:157
and so they magnified them, that they did not even dare to cling too closely to them.
And they had such power not only over believers, but also over unbelievers.
For tell me, what is the mark of a slave? Is it not to do whatever his master commands him? And what is the sign of a master? Is it not to accomplish among his slaves whatever he himself wills? Who then were they that accomplished whatever they wished in the days of the kings and rulers of that time? Was it not the apostles? It is quite evident.
For the kings and rulers wished to hold the whole world fast in impiety, and commanded men to serve demons;
因為君王和官長想要把普天下的人拘禁在不敬虔之中,並吩咐人去事奉鬼魔;
23:161
but the apostles willed the contrary, and it was their will that came to pass.
And if you point me to the prison, the scourges, and the tortures, you are telling me of even greater instances of their lordship.
How so, and in what way? Because even when these things happened, it was still their will that came to pass.
For it was not by the law of the many masters, but by virtue, that they won for themselves this lordship—a lordship that needs none of the outward supports, but shines the brighter precisely when it is plotted against by all.
For those other masters have often been destroyed by slaves who plotted against them, because their mastery was imperfect and utterly weak;
因為那些主人往往被心懷詭計的奴僕所除滅,緣故是他們的統治乃是不完全且極其軟弱的;
23:166
but this lordship they could not quench; rather, by plotting against it they only made it shine forth the more.
Who then would be the more illustrious master—the one who needs ten thousand aids in order to rule his servants, or the one who is freed from all those, and who leads and carries off his subjects with authority? It is quite evident that it is the latter.
For those masters, unless they have the laws to aid them and dwell in cities, have often lost their very life along with their lordship;
因為那些主人若沒有律法的幫助,又不住在城中,往往連同他們的統治權一併喪了性命;
23:169
but Paul displayed his lordship even in the deserts and everywhere.
Do you wish to see him more illustrious even than kings? He introduced laws throughout the whole world, and men, forsaking the laws of kings, obeyed his writings.
Moreover, the one held sway over bodies, but the other over souls.
Who then, as a slave to his master, or as a subject obeying his king with goodwill, ever gave such obedience as the faithful did to Paul at his mere written word? What could one say of their longing, of their zeal on his behalf, seeing that they were ready even to pluck out their own eyes for him? Who ever possessed such slaves? Considering all these things—how they subdued the faithful, how they were terrible to the unbelievers, driving them back by main force, and how through them Christ prevailed—the Prophet did not say simply, 'Have dominion in the midst of your enemies,' but 'Rule mightily,' signifying the intensified lordship.
And though the enemies saw these things, they were able to do nothing, even though they had the laws on their side, and executioners, and every kind of authority.
But these men were the mightier, because of Him who dwelt within them.
He it was who exercised dominion through them;
正是祂藉著他們施行統治;
23:176
He did not merely rule, but ruled mightily;
祂不只是掌權,乃是大力掌權;
23:177
and so, because of Him who was in them, they braved fire and sword, and wild beasts, and all the rest.
For Christ was with them in all things—men who, as though contending in bodies not their own, and being set free from all the sorrows of this life, so rejoiced and so leapt for joy, held fast by the lordship of Christ, sparing neither money, nor bodies, nor their present life.
Such things did those who once were enemies and adversaries do;
那些從前作仇敵、作對頭的人,如今竟行了這樣的事;
23:180
but the invincible power of Christ not only freed them from their enmity, but also brought them into servitude and into so great a familiarity with Him.
So that even if the Father is said to put the enemies under His feet, it is not said, as I have remarked, as though the Son wrought nothing;
所以,縱然說父將仇敵放在祂腳下,正如我所說的,這話並不是說子甚麼都沒有作;
23:182
for the whole achievement has been the Only-Begotten's;
因為這全部的功績乃是獨生子所成就的;
23:183
but it is so said in order that, as I said before, you may understand the Father and the Son to be one God, while the distinct property of each is preserved, and that you may not conceive of two unbegotten beings.
For that the whole achievement is His, consider from the things already accomplished;
至於這全部的功績都是屬於祂的,你可以從那已經成就的事來思想;
23:185
and do not take what is said merely in a human sense,
for much absurdity will follow.
But that you too may learn, listen to what I am about to say:
Some, who were formerly enemies, became friends, while others still remain enemies.
But that He Himself made the enemies into friends, Paul also makes clear when he says:
'When He shall deliver up the kingdom to God, even the Father;'
「當祂將國交與神,就是父的時候」(《哥林多前書》十五24);
23:191
and the Saviour also makes it clear, when He says to the Father Himself:
'I have glorified You on the earth; I have finished the work which You gave Me to do.'
But the subjecting of the enemies has been the Father's work.
And yet this is greater than that.
For it is not the same thing to punish enemies who remain enemies, as to make friends of those who were enemies.
But neither is the Son on this account less than the Father, nor the Father on this account less than the Son.
And that you may learn that those things too belong to the Son, just as these belong to the Father, listen:
"Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire, which is prepared for the devil and his angels."
And He who sends the angels to gather the tares is the Only-Begotten, and everywhere we see Him punishing the devil.
And this the demons themselves confess, saying:
"Have You come here before the time to torment us?" So that it is He Himself who is about to torment them.
Do you see that even though the things that come to pass are said to be brought about by the Father, they are the achievements of the Son? And that the things of the Son are also the Father's, listen again to Him saying:
"No one comes to Me unless the Father draws him."
"No one can come to the Father except through Me."
One must not therefore interpret such things in a human fashion.
Since "Your enemies" too must be understood in this way, not as enemies of Him alone.
For "He who does not honor the Son," He says, "does not honor the Father."
So that the Jews were enemies not of Him alone, but also of the Father.
Wherefore He also brought utter destruction upon them, and casting their city to the ground made it a ruin—though not immediately after the cross, and He granted them a long time for repentance, if only they were willing, and He left them the apostles, so that learning His power through them they might at last, however late, turn back.
But when they were sick past all cure, He brought upon them the crowning point of their calamities, thereby again calling them to repentance, so that having fallen from their ancient polity, they might, by the very necessity of circumstances, be led by the hand to the truth—seeing everywhere adored the One whom they had outraged, and all their own things dissolved.
But when even so they do not become better, then at last, being deprived of all pardon, they will fall into the immortal punishment.
And when you hear "footstool," do not suppose that anything perceptible is meant, but rather subjection.
And that He subjects them to Him is clear from what is added:
for since the throne is one, and the footstool is one.
"With You is the dominion in the day of Your power."
"Until I make Your enemies the footstool of Your feet"—that no one may suppose the Son to be weak and in need of aid, like one of the apostles, listen how He adds the correction of that very suspicion, saying:
"With You is the dominion in the day of Your power."
What does "With You is the dominion" mean? "In You," He says, "is the dominion"—not something that came about later, but existing in You perpetually.
Which Isaiah also, making it plain, said likewise:
"Whose government is upon His shoulder;"
that is, in Himself, in His essence, in His nature—which is not the case with earthly kings.
For their dominion lies in the multitude of their armies;
因為他們的權柄在於軍隊的眾多;
23:223
which was not the case with the apostles.
For their dominion too came about from a power introduced to them from outside;
因為他們的權柄也是出於一種從外面加給他們的能力;
23:225
but He held the dominion in His nature, in His essence, not having acquired it later after being begotten, nor having gained it as something brought in from without, but being begotten thus.
Wherefore also, when questioned concerning His kingship, He said:
"For this I was born, and for this I have come."
"With You is the dominion in the day of Your power."
But the words "With You is the dominion" declare not only these things that have been said, but others as well—namely, that His dominion is not in another, but is both perpetual and immortal.
For men it often fails, even while they are living;
因為對世人而言,權柄往往在他們活著時就已失去;
23:231
and if not while living, yet altogether when they die;
即或不在他們活著時失去,到他們死時也必完全失去;
23:232
or rather, even while they are living, it is not really with them;
更確切地說,就是在他們活著的時候,那權柄其實也不真正屬於他們;
23:233
but, as I said before, it lies in armies and bodyguards, and in abundance of wealth, and in the encircling of walls, and in all the rest.
But in the case of God not only is this not so, but in Him it exists, and exists perpetually.
And just as it is impossible for His essence not to be, so also it is with His kingdom.
23:236
'In the day of Thy power.'
By 'day of power' one might understand both the day that has already come to pass and the day that is yet to be.
For each of them is a demonstration of the greatest power.
Or does it not seem to you the greatest proof of power, when through death, death is abolished; when brazen gates are shattered; when sin is done away; when the curse is loosed; when all the old evils are overthrown, and other new good things are brought in? For what is equal to this power, whether you examine the miracles or the mighty deeds? The dead were raised, lepers were cleansed, demons were driven out, the sea was bridled, sins were loosed, the paralyzed were made firm, paradise was opened, rocks were rent, the veil was torn, the rays of the sun were turned away and darkness overtook the whole world, the bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, the robber returned to his ancient homeland, the vaults of heaven were flung open, and our nature, which had been trodden underfoot, was led up above the heaven of heavens to the heights; and—what is greater than all this—it was seated upon a royal throne, with angels and the powers standing beside it.
all wickedness was driven out, virtue was restored, the grace of the Spirit was given; fishermen, tax-collectors, and tent-makers stitched up the mouths of philosophers, turned back the tongues of orators, and destroyed the tyranny of demons.
the altars, the temples, the feasts, and the pagan festivals of the Greeks were broken up.
the savour of burnt fat and the smoke and all the accursed sacrifices were driven out with full force; soothsayers and begging priests of the Mother-goddess and augurs and the whole workshop of the devil ran away as fugitives; Churches sprang up everywhere throughout the world, choirs of virgins were formed, orders of monks, and together with the cities the desert too was filled with piety; and choirs of righteous and holy men, taking their stand, sang back in melody to the powers of angels above; and multitudes of martyrs and throngs of confessors were planted everywhere throughout the world; virtue was accomplished with much ease; nations of barbarians were taught to pursue wisdom, and those fiercer than wild beasts displayed their rivalry toward the commonwealth of the angels; and over all the land that the sun looks upon, so far did the word run after the Cross and the Resurrection.
Pondering all these things, the Prophet said:
'With Thee is the dominion in the day of Thy power.'
But if you wish also to behold the day that is to come, and to learn how that day too is a day of His power, consider how great a thing it is to see the heaven rolled up, and all the nature that had been corrupted rising again, and at His
beck all standing forth—the devil put to shame, the demons cast down and bowing low, the righteous being crowned, each one giving account of his transgressions, receiving the prizes of his good deeds, while a new order of another life comes into being—how great a thing this is!
For there will no longer be death, and disease, and old age; no longer poverty, and injuries, and plots; no longer dwellings, and cities, and crafts, and voyages; no longer the wearing of garments, and food, and drink, and roofs, and beds, and tables, and lamps; no longer plots, and battles, and law-courts; no longer marriages, and birth-pangs, and childbearing.
but all these things are dissolved like dust that is swept away, and another better order of life is given, one in which incorruption, immortality, and much power are bestowed upon the body.
And Paul too, making this plain, said:
'For the fashion of this world passeth away.'
But if you disbelieve the things that have been said, because you do not see them present, take from present things the proof concerning things to come.
Go over in thought the whole inhabited world, the land, the sea, Greece, the barbarian lands, the inhabited world, the uninhabited world, the cities upon the land, the islands in the sea, the mountains, and the glens; and seeing everywhere the power of Christ shining forth, and all men proclaiming His precious name, reason with yourself that He who was able to do such things has also promised the things to come.
And if you should wish to take the proof even in part, consider for what reason the whole inhabited world runs together to see a tomb that holds no body.
what power draws those from the ends of the earth, so as to see where He was born, where He was buried, where He was crucified?
Consider the Cross itself, of how great a power it is a sign.
For this Cross, before this time, was an accursed death, a death of reproach, a death the most shameful of all.
But behold, now it has become more honourable than life itself, and more splendid than diadems; and we all carry it about upon our foreheads, not only not being ashamed of it, but even glorying in it.
Not only private persons, but even those very ones who wear the diadems bear it upon their foreheads above their diadems—and very fittingly too.
for it is better than ten thousand diadems.
For while the diadem adorns the head, the Cross makes safe the mind.
This is a defence against demons; this diadem is a destroyer of the soul's diseases.
this is a weapon that cannot be overcome; this is a wall that cannot be stormed.
this is a security that cannot be contended against.
it dissolves not only the assaults of barbarians and the incursions of enemies, but also the very battle-lines of the savage demons themselves.
'In the splendours of the saints.'
He is still discoursing about the day, both the present one and the one to come.
By 'splendour' here he means the beauty of the saints.
What indeed is more splendid than Paul? What more illustrious than Peter? They ran throughout the inhabited world, shining brighter than the sun, sowing the seeds of piety. For as though they were angels come down from heaven, so were they unapproachable to all.
Showing this, he who composed the book of the Acts said that 'No one dared to join himself to them.'
For indeed their very garments were full of grace, and the shadows of their bodies displayed much power.
But if they were such here, consider for me, in that day, when they shall receive incorruptible bodies, when immortal, when bodies gleaming beyond every visible splendour—what shall these men be, and those like them: prophets and apostles, and righteous men, and martyrs, and confessors, and all who have distinguished themselves in the noblest manner of life through faith in Christ?
Consider for me those throngs, the torches, the rays, the glory, the comeliness, the radiance, the festal assembly.
Who shall set these things forth? No word at all.
But experience alone will clearly teach those who are counted worthy to attain to this contemplation, that that splendour
comes to pass as if many suns had blazed forth above the heaven, or as if there were unbroken flashes of lightning;
彷彿有許多太陽在天上發光,又彷彿有連綿不斷的閃電一般臨到;
23:276
or rather, whatever I may say in my eagerness to set forth that beauty, I shall not be able to speak of it in a manner worthy of it.
For all these examples are drawn from bodily things;
因為這一切的比喻都是屬乎物質形體的;
23:278
but the splendour and the glory which shall then shine forth there will blaze out beyond every such beauty.
For the bodies will not only be incorruptible and immortal, but will then also be clothed with unspeakable glory.
'In the splendours of the saints.'
That he might not show Him to be only fearful, he shows also His gentleness and His beneficence, saying:
'In the splendours of the saints.'
And this too belongs to His power, to make those men so resplendent;
這也屬乎祂的大能,就是使那些人如此光輝燦爛;
23:284
which Paul also declared when he said:
'Who shall transform the body of our lowliness, that it may be made conformable to the body of His glory.'
Then, since he had spoken of something great and unutterable, he added:
'According to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.'
Do not ask how, he says, and in what manner;
他說,不要追問如何成就,也不要問用甚麼方式;
23:289
for all things are possible to Him, whatsoever He wills.
But why did he not say, 'In the splendour of the saints,' but 'In the splendours'? Because the prizes are many and diverse.
'For there is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars;'
'for one star differeth from another star in glory;'
'so also,' he says, 'shall the resurrection of the dead be.'
'In my Father's house are many mansions.'
Therefore that splendour has no end.
For it neither yields to night nor gives place to darkness, but being unspeakable and great, and far surpassing this visible light, it has yet this further and greatest property, that it admits no limit — which belongs to the unspeakable power of the King, namely, to bring bodies that are corruptible and perishable into such strength and power.
Then, since he had spoken of certain great things and had given wings to the hearer with these hopes, he shows that these things come to pass with good reason, seeing that He who accomplishes them is so great.
And who is He that accomplishes them? He who is of one essence with the Father.
For to declare this he added:
'From the womb, before the morning star, I begat Thee.'
But those who twist what is said to suit their own opinion assert that these words were spoken concerning the generation according to the flesh.
23:302
How then, tell me, 'before the morning star'?
He spoke thus of the night in which He was born, because He was brought forth before the dawn.
But this was not what he sought to say, nor did he speak it for the sake of narrating history;
但這並非他所要說的重點,他也不是為了敘述史實而說這話;
23:305
and besides, they cannot show that the prophets, who for the most part spoke in a veiled manner, would have said just what the evangelists taught.
Here, then, the phrase 'before the morning star' does not mean before the rising of the morning star, but before its nature, before the morning star came into being.
For Scripture knows how to distinguish these things, when it says 'before the nature' and when it says 'before the working';
因為聖經懂得分辨這些事,何時是說「在其本性之先」,何時是說「在其運作之先」;
23:308
'One must anticipate the dawn to give thanks unto Thee, and to entreat Thee before the rising of the light.'
For here it speaks of the dawn.
For it did not say, 'Before the sun,' but, 'Before the rising';
因為經上不是說「在日頭之先」,而是說「在日出之先」;
23:311
for nothing came into being before the nature of the sun;
因為沒有一物是在日頭的本性之先而有的;
23:312
but, 'Before the rising of the sun,' that it might indicate the dawn.
But elsewhere, when it speaks of what is before the nature of the sun itself, it does not say, 'Before the rising,' but, 'Before the sun.'
Before the sun his name endures.
And before the moon, to all generations of generations.
As, therefore, it is one thing to say 'Before the sun,' and another to say 'Before the rising of the sun':
for the one signifies the working of the sun and the dawn, but the other its very nature;
因為前者表示日頭的運行與清晨的破曉,後者卻表示它的本性;
23:318
so also here, if he had wished to signify the night, he would not have said 'Before the morning star,' but 'Before the rising of the morning star.'
But in another way also, Christ took this psalm not as referring to the dispensation according to the flesh, but to the generation according to the Spirit.
For when He had said to the Jews, 'What think ye of the Christ? whose son is He?' and they had said, 'David's,' He brought forward the psalm, saying:
'How then doth David say, The Lord said unto my Lord:
Sit thou at my right hand? If then He is his Lord, how say ye that He is his son?'
What then is that which is said? Here He set forth the genuineness of the begetting.
What then? Is He only before the morning star? By no means.
Before the moon is His throne.
And not before the moon only, since concerning the Father also it says:
'Before the mountains were brought forth, and the earth and the world were formed, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art.'
Not from everlasting only, but even before the ages;
不僅是從亙古,甚至是在萬世以先;
23:329
nor indeed unto the age, but He is without limit.
Do not, then, stumble at the words, but receive the meaning in a manner befitting God.
When he begins the psalm, he did not begin from this point:
'From the womb, before the morning star, have I begotten thee';
「從腹中,在晨星以先,我生了你」;
23:333
but having first displayed His mighty deeds, and having proclaimed Him through His works, afterwards he shows His dignity as coming from the Lord.
'If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.'
'But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works;'
that having learned that He who sits at the right hand of the Father, who is called Lord as the Father is, who has His sovereignty together with Himself, who works such splendour, who exercises dominion among the nations, thou mayest not be troubled if thou hearest that this same One is Son, and that before all creation.
It is worthy of wonder how the Prophet utters some things in the person of God, and others in his own person.
For the saying 'Sit thou at my right hand,' and the saying 'From the womb, before the morning star, have I begotten thee,' which are things too high for himself, he introduces God Himself as speaking;
因為「你坐在我的右邊」這話,以及「從腹中,在晨星以先,我生了你」這話,都是超乎他自己之上的,他便引入神自己來說;
23:339
but the other things he himself narrates.
But consider also how great a fittingness of expression he has employed.
For it would have been enough merely to say, 'I have begotten thee';
本來單說「我生了你」也就夠了;
23:342
but for the sake of those who walk upon the ground, that he might set forth the genuineness of it, he also made mention of this expression.
And just as, when Scripture speaks of a hand, it does not speak in order that we should suspect a hand, but the creative power;
正如聖經提到「手」時,並非要我們猜想有一隻手,乃是指創造的能力;
23:344
so also it made mention of a womb, that it might set forth the genuineness of the begetting.
Then, wishing to frame the prophecy in the form of a judge, he directs his speech toward Him, which was a mark of most vehement love and surpassing joy, and of a soul become wholly possessed by the divine Spirit.
The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent.
Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek.
Seest thou how again he brings the discourse down to what is lowlier, speaking now concerning the Godhead, and now concerning the manhood? which the Evangelists also do, so that on both sides the exactness of the doctrines may be preserved.
And why did he say, 'After the order of Melchizedek'? Both on account of the mysteries, because he too offered bread and wine to Abraham; and because this priesthood was free from the Law; and because of its unendingness, as Paul also says; and because it was without beginning.
For what that man had in the shadows, this came to pass in the truth in the case of Jesus;
因為那人在預表的影兒中所有的,這一切都在真體中應驗在耶穌身上;
23:351
and just as the names ran on ahead—such as Joshua, such as Christ—so also did this.
Melchizedek, then, appears to have neither beginning of days nor end of life, not because he had them not, but because he was not genealogically recorded.
But Jesus had neither beginning of days nor end of life, not after this manner, but because in Him there was altogether no temporal beginning nor end.
23:354
For the one was a shadow, but the other truth.
As therefore, when you hear the name 'Jesus,' you do not suppose it to be the true Jesus, but receive only the form of the name, and seek nothing further;
所以,正如你聽見「耶穌」這名時,並不揣想那真正的耶穌,只是領受這名的樣式,別無他求;
23:356
so also, when you hear that Melchizedek is without beginning and without end, do not seek him in the truth of the actual facts, but be content with the appellation alone, and learn the truth of it upon Christ.
And when you hear of an oath, do not think it to be an oath.
For just as wrath, in the case of God, is not wrath, but the punitive power, and is no passion;
因為正如忿怒,在神身上並非忿怒,乃是那施行懲罰的能力,並不是情慾;
23:359
so God does not swear, but declares that which shall assuredly come to pass. Having therefore spoken of the splendour of the saints, of the setting of the enemies under His feet, and of the
day of His power, He next speaks also of things present.
And observe what an order he gives to his discourse, softening the hardened hearer.
For having first put him in fear by the word of judgement, and softened his stubbornness, he thus introduces also the discourse concerning things present.
For this reason he also makes such a blending.
'Until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.'
'The Lord shall send forth the rod of your power out of Zion;'
'and rule in the midst of your enemies.'
'With you is the dominion in the day of your power, in the splendours of the saints.'
Then again things present, no longer bearing punishment, but benefaction;
然後又提到當前之事,不再帶著懲罰,乃是帶著恩惠;
23:369
'You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.'
For this is the taking away of sin, and reconciliation with God.
Then, having dwelt upon these things as long as he wished, he again lays hold of the dispensation, transforming his discourse to a humbler tone, and saying:
And yet above he said that He Himself sits at the right hand of the Father.
Do you see how one must not simply sit fixed upon the words? What means, 'The Lord at your right hand'? Since he touched upon the dispensation, he turns the discourse to the flesh, which receives the help.
For He is seen in agony, and sweating, and so sweating that clots of blood streamed down, and being strengthened.
For such is the nature of the flesh.
'He shall crush kings in the day of His wrath.'
One would not err in saying this both concerning things present—those who rise up against the Church—and concerning things to come, that they shall render account for the sins and impieties they have committed.
'He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill them with corpses.'
What means, 'He shall judge among the nations'? He shall give sentence, he says, He shall condemn the demons.
And that He did judge, hear Christ saying:
'Now is the judgement of this world;'
'now shall the prince of this world be cast out.'
'And I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto Myself.'
But if he has used a more sensible and vivid expression, do not stumble at it.
23:385
'He shall crush the heads of many upon the earth.'
If you would receive this in an anagogical sense, one might say that He shall cast down pride;
你若願意按屬靈的深意來領受這話,或可說祂必除滅那狂傲;
23:387
but if also in a literal, sensible sense, then the Jewish calamity, whom He utterly destroyed with great vehemence.
23:388
'He shall drink of the brook in the way.'
Here he shows the lowliness of His manner of living, the frugality of His way of life, that indeed He did these things not in pomp, nor having bodyguards, nor clothed with any perceptible display, but pursuing a plain life, and such a one as to drink from a brook.
For such as was His table, such also was His drink.
His table was barley loaves, His drink was water from the brook.
For He came to teach this philosophic manner of life—to master the belly, to trample upon vain display, to turn away from arrogance.
Then, showing the gain of such a life, he added this:
For this is the fruit of humility and of a life of hardship.
These things are said not concerning His Godhead, but concerning the flesh which drinks from the torrent and which is exalted.
For this lowliness not only did Him no harm at all, but even lifted Him up to an unspeakable height.
Do you also, then, beloved, since you have these examples, disdain the inflamed life that is puffed up and full of vain show;
所以親愛的,你既有了這些榜樣,就當鄙棄那狂熱膨脹、充滿虛華浮誇的生活;
23:398
and pursue the humble and unpretentious life, if indeed you wish to be someone splendid and great.
For your Master came for this very purpose, that He might teach you this way.
For this reason too the prophet, having spoken of the noble achievements, added this very thing, as though all but saying:
When you hear of victory and trophies, do not expect to behold weapons and soldiers, and chariots, and horses, and horsemen, and men-at-arms, and tumults, and confusions.
So humble is he who accomplishes these things, so lowly, as to drink water from a torrent;
成就這些事的人是何等謙卑,何等收斂,以致像從溪流中飲水一般;
23:403
and yet such a man will accomplish all these things.
Let them hear this, those who keep Sybaritic tables, and the dainty dishes, and
who devise every kind of seasoning, and gather from everywhere various tribes of cooks, and enlist sailors and pilots and oarsmen, that they may bring in strange sorts of wine and perfumes and all the rest of that effeminate luxury, and plunge themselves into that very pit, and become more debased than all men.
For to need many things is not wont to make a man lofty, nor is it wont to make him lowly to be in want of few.
And if you will, let us shape the image of each. Let there be one who has many supplying him from every quarter—sailors and pilots, and craftsmen and household servants, and weavers and embroiderers, and cowherds and shepherds, and grooms and horse-breeders—and let him have a great retinue of attendants in all things;
你們若願意,讓我們把這兩種人各自的形象描繪出來。設有一人,四面八方都有許多人供應他——水手與舵手、工匠與家僕、織工與繡工、牧牛人與牧羊人、馬夫與養馬人,在一切事上都有眾多僕役伺候;
23:408
but let another enjoy none of these things, but only bread and water and a plain garment;
另有一人卻不享用這些,只有麵包、清水和一件粗衣;
23:409
which of these is the lofty one, and which the lowly? Is it not quite plain that it is the one who has only the garment? For this man will even be able to despise the very king who reigns;
這兩人中誰是高貴的,誰是卑下的呢?豈不是很明顯,那只有一件衣服的才是高貴的嗎?因為這人甚至連在位的君王也能藐視;
23:410
but that other is the slave of all who furnish him these things, cringing, flattering, courting them all, in dread lest someone forsake him and hurt him in vital matters;
但那另一個,卻是供應他這些東西之眾人的奴隸,向眾人卑躬屈膝、諂媚奉承、百般巴結,惟恐有人棄他而去,在要緊處害了他;
23:411
for nothing makes a man a slave so much as needing many things;
因為沒有什麼比需求許多東西更能使人淪為奴隸的了;
23:412
just as nothing makes a man free so much as needing only what is necessary.
23:413
One might observe this even in the case of the brute beasts.
For what profit is there to an ass laden with a great weight of burdens, though it enjoy them ten thousand times over? And what harm to another that is freed from all these, if it enjoy the food that is needful? For this reason too Christ, in making His own disciples lofty—inasmuch as they were about to discourse with the whole inhabited world—freed them from all cares, rendering them winged, and firmer in tone than adamant.
For nothing so implants strength in the soul as being freed from these things;
因為沒有什麼比脫離這些事物更能把力量注入靈魂的了;
23:416
and nothing so weakens it as being held fast by them.
For just as it is not possible to find sorrow quickly here, so neither pleasure there.
For the one has many masters and mistresses, savage and inhuman;
因為前者有許多主人和女主人,都是兇殘無情的;
23:419
but the other is slave to none, yet rules over all, in great security, enjoying the sunbeam, luxuriating in the air, and having none to trouble him.
Anger does not tear him, nor envy, nor malice, nor do cares waste him away, nor jealousies, nor vainglory, nor pride, nor any other such thing;
怒氣不撕裂他,嫉妒、惡毒也不能,憂慮不耗盡他,猜忌、虛榮、驕傲,以及其他這一類的事都不能;
23:421
but like some calm harbour freed from waves, so are the affairs of his soul disposed, and he journeys toward heaven with ease, held down by none of the things that are present.
That we too, then, may enjoy this security, and the cheerfulness of the present life, and the ease of our journey hence, let us pursue this manner of life, so that we may also enjoy the eternal good things, which surpass all speech and mind and understanding, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the might, unto the ages of ages.
