The God of gods, the Lord, has spoken, and has called the earth from the rising of the sun even to its setting.
And elsewhere the same prophet says:
21:3
God stood in the congregation of gods.
For indeed, even if there are those called gods, and many lords.
The sons of God, seeing the daughters of men.
He who curses God shall bear his sin;
咒詛神的,必擔當自己的罪;
21:7
and he who names the name of the Lord shall be stoned.
Let the gods, who did not make the heaven and the earth, perish from under the heaven.
Whom, then, does he indicate by this name in those testimonies, and whom does he here call gods? The rulers.
You shall not revile the gods, nor speak evil of the ruler of your people.
He also refers to those who have been born of some virtuous ancestor.
For since Enosh, having displayed much virtue, was called by the name of God;
因為以挪士彰顯了諸多美德,就被稱為神的名下之人;
21:13
and since all those descended from him, and the offspring of his brother, mingled with one another, he calls the descendants of the virtuous man sons of God.
'For they began,' he says, 'to call upon the name of God.'
He also refers to the people of the Jews, who were honoured with this appellation in the saying:
You are gods, and sons of Israel.
For thus He called their people, out of His own loving-kindness toward mankind.
In this way also that saying is resolved: 'He who curses God shall bear his sin';
如此,那句話也就得了解釋:「咒詛神的,必擔當自己的罪」;
21:19
that is to say, He who speaks evil of the ruler sins.
But he who names the name of the Lord shall be stoned;
但那稱呼主之名的人必被石頭打死;
21:21
that is, he who attaches the name of the God who truly is to those things which have no being.
For since the sin is unpardonable, the punishment for it is also most severe;
因為既然這罪不可赦免,對它的刑罰也就極其嚴厲;
21:23
the gods of the Greeks are also called gods, not by way of honour, nor as a gracious appellation, but because of the deception of those who went astray and who thus named them.
For this reason Paul also says:
'For even if there are so-called gods,' making clear that they have no being, not even so far as an appellation given in honour.
Here then, of whom does he speak when he says, 'God of gods'? To me it seems he speaks of the gods of the Greeks, not as beings that truly are,
but as those which are imagined to be so among the deluded.
For since the Jews were still rather gross, and were not entirely delivered from idolatry, but stood gaping after the idols and retained many remnants of their transgression, from this very point He tears down their conceits, showing that He is Lord even of those idols.
For indeed He is Lord even of the demons—I mean of their very substances;
因為祂實在連眾鬼魔也是主——我是指它們本身的體質;
21:30
for their evil dispositions have been introduced by themselves, and so has all their wickedness.
And this psalm too seems to me to be connected with the preceding one.
For here too there is written a reproof and an accusation of those who have offended;
因為在此處也寫有對那些犯罪之人的責備與控告;
21:33
but there he summoned the whole inhabited world to give ear, while here he summons the very elements themselves that are spread over the whole inhabited world.
There is one theatre here and another audience;
這裡是另一種劇場,另一種聽眾;
21:35
there it was the nations, the earthborn, the rich man, the poor man;
在那裡是列國、地上所生的人、富人、窮人;
21:36
here it is heaven and earth, and he brings in God Himself pleading His cause, and He utters such words as one who is pleading His just cause against the people of the Jews.
Wherefore we too have need of greater attention.
Another prophet also does this, and brings in God pleading His cause, and sets the ravines and the foundations of the earth in the rank of judges.
'Hear,' he says, 'you ravines and foundations of the earth;
他說:「諸山谷與大地的根基啊,你們要聽;
21:40
for the Lord has a controversy with His people, and He will reason with His people.'
'He will enter into judgement with you and with your fathers.'
And in many places of the Scriptures one may see this figure, which is especially most striking and worthy of the loving-kindness of God.
For indeed it displays His unspeakable goodness, in that He condescends so far as to be judged together with men.
'Out of Zion is the beauty of His comeliness.'
What is here said has something prophetic, and also something historical.
For even under the Old Covenant His comeliness came from thence.
For the temple, the Holy of Holies, all the worship and the polity of the old legislation, the multitude of priests, and the sacrifices, and the whole burnt offerings, and the sacred hymns and psalmody—all these were from thence, and from thence the type of the things to come had been foredrawn.
And when the truth itself had come, from thence again it took its beginning.
From thence the cross shone forth;
從那裡十字架發出光輝;
21:50
from thence the countless mighty works.
For this very reason Isaiah too, writing concerning the law of the New Covenant, says:
'For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem, and He shall judge among the nations.'
For by Zion he here means the whole region and the city lying beside it, the mother-city of the Jews.
For from thence, as from some starting-line, the apostles like swift-limbed horses were let loose into the whole inhabited world;
因為從那裡,如同從某條起跑線一般,眾使徒像腿腳矯健的駿馬被放奔向普天下;
21:55
from thence they began to work the signs;
從那裡他們開始行神蹟;
21:56
there the resurrection took place, there the ascension, there the prelude and the beginning of our salvation;
在那裡發生了復活,在那裡有升天,在那裡有我們救恩的開端與起始;
21:57
there the ineffable doctrines began to be proclaimed.
There first was the Father revealed, the Only-begotten made known, and so great a grace of the Spirit given.
And there the apostles exercised the doctrine concerning incorporeal beings, and concerning the gifts, and powers, and the good things to come that were promised.
Pondering all these things, the Prophet calls it His comeliness.
For the beauties of God and His comeliness are His goodness and His love for mankind, and His beneficence toward all.
'God shall come manifestly, our God, and shall not keep silence.'
Do you see how, as he proceeds, he lays the word bare, uncovers the treasure, and sends forth a brighter ray, when he says:
For when did He not come manifestly? When? At His former coming;
祂何時不是顯然而來的呢?何時呢?就是在祂前一次的降臨;
21:65
for He came noiselessly, hidden from the many, and for a long time escaping notice.
21:66
Τί λέγω τοὺς πολλοὺς , ὅπου γε οὐδὲ αὐτὴ ἡ κυοφοροῦσα Παρθένος ᾔδει τοῦ μυστηρίου τὸ ἀπόῤῥητον , οὐδὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτὸν , οὐδὲ ὁ δοκῶν εἶναι πατὴρ μέγα τι ἐφαντάζετο περὶ αὐτοῦ;
Why do I speak of the many, when not even the Virgin herself who bore Him in her womb knew the ineffable mystery, nor did His brethren believe in Him, nor did he who was thought to be His father imagine anything great concerning Him?
And why do I speak of men? He escaped the notice even of the devil himself;
我又何必說人呢?就連魔鬼自己也未曾察覺祂;
21:68
for had he known, he would not, after so long a time, have asked Him upon the mountain, 'If Thou be the Son of God,' and have done this once, and twice, and a third time.
Therefore also He said to John, when he began to reveal Him:
for it was not yet the time for the ineffable mystery of the dispensation to be unveiled;
因為那救贖安排的隱密奧祕,還不到揭開的時候;
21:71
'I wish still to escape the notice of the devil;'
'for thus it is fitting for us.'
And when He came down from the mountain, He charged them that they should tell no one that He is the Christ.
For at that time He came as a shepherd, seeking the sheep that had gone astray, and wishing to hunt down the quarry that had broken loose;
因為那時祂是像牧人一樣來的,尋找那迷失的羊,願意獵取那掙脫奔逃的獵物;
21:75
wherefore also He kept Himself in shadow.
For just as a physician does not at once become fearsome to the sick man, so too He from the outset was unwilling to make Himself manifest, but did so quietly and little by little.
Wherefore, this same prophet, making clear this noiseless coming of His, says as he proceeds:
'He shall come down like rain upon a fleece, and like drops that fall upon the earth.'
For He did not come making a din, nor troubling, nor shaking the earth, nor sending forth lightnings, nor convulsing the heaven, nor bringing with Him hosts of angels, nor tearing asunder the midst of the firmament and so descending upon the clouds;
因為祂來的時候並非發出巨響,不使地震動搖撼,不放射閃電,不震動諸天,不帶著成群的天使,也不撕裂穹蒼的中間、乘著雲彩降下;
21:80
but noiselessly, through a virgin's womb, carried for a nine months' term, He is born like a carpenter's son in a manger, is plotted against while in mean swaddling-clothes, and flees with His mother into Egypt.
Then, after the death of him who had committed such lawless deeds, He returned, and went about continually like one of the multitude in outward appearance; His garment was mean, and His table meaner still, and His walking was unceasing, and so unceasing that weariness came upon Him from the walking.
But then He shall not come thus, but so manifestly as to have no need of one to announce beforehand His coming.
For this reason He too, making clear His own conspicuousness, said:
'If they shall say to you, Behold, He is in the inner chambers, go not forth;'
21:85
'that, Behold, He is in the wilderness, go not out.'
'For as the lightning goeth forth from the rising of the sun, and shineth even unto the west,'
'so shall the coming of the Son of Man be'—itself displaying and proclaiming itself.
For with the lightning this is what happens: we have no need of one to announce it, but at once it appears and becomes known to all, and to all at the same moment.
For 'the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the last trumpet.'
And the prophet also saw Him thus, borne upon the clouds, with a river drawn along before Him, and the fearful tribunal, and the inexorable reckonings.
For then, then is the time of the court and of judgment;
因為到那時、到那時就是審判庭與定罪的時候;
21:92
wherefore He appears no longer as a physician, but as a judge.
Daniel, at any rate, beholds both His throne, and the river drawn along before the tribunal, and all things are shown to him as of fire—the chariot, the wheels.
But not when, at the beginning and in His first coming, He arrived, did He show anything of this sort—no fire, no river, nor anything else of the kind;
但當祂起初、在祂第一次降臨而來的時候,祂並未顯出任何這樣的事——沒有火,沒有河,也沒有別的這類之物;
21:95
but a manger and a lodging, and a hut, and a poor mother.
And in another way, from this too, he shows His unchangeableness and immutability.
For since he had said that He who sat upon the throne had hair white as wool, and a garment as snow, lest you should suppose it to be hair, or a garment, but rather that the pure and translucent fire is everywhere, he says:
'Fire shall be kindled before Him, and round about Him a mighty tempest.'
So this one too, by means of these images, sets forth at once His immutability, and unchangeableness, and radiance, and unapproachableness.
And he does not stop at the fire, but, wishing to set forth the vehemence of the punishment, he goes on to say:
A tempest (kataigis) is spoken of either as an unbearable mass of snow, sweeping away and overturning everything it falls upon, or as a violent rush of winds accomplishing the very same thing, and being unbearable to those
Wishing, therefore, to show the unbearableness of that chastisement, he brought forward these images.
He shall call the heaven above, and the earth, that he may judge his people.
Again he makes mention of the elements, through which countless good things have come to the race of men—not only for the life and constitution of the body, but also as the very foundation of the knowledge of God.
For both the beauties and the magnitudes, and the modes of their arrangements, and the substances out of which these elements are composed, and the things that come to be from them—both those that happen universally throughout all time and those that happen particularly and often—all these both nourish and sustain our bodies, and lead us by the hand to the knowledge of the Maker.
For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead.
For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God—that is, through the wisdom manifested in created things, seeing it is no small, but indeed a very great and most evident teaching—
And the things that come to pass daily through them, even if they seem to happen according to the sequence of nature, yet these too proclaim the Creator.
For the Creator is also the Master of nature.
Do not be amazed if he directs his discourse against the Jews while discoursing about the universal judgment.
For so also Paul says:
Wrath and anger, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that works evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek.
For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law;
凡沒有律法犯了罪的,也必不按律法而滅亡;
21:114
and as many as have sinned under the law shall be judged by the law.
Gather to him his holy ones, who make his covenant upon sacrifices.
Why ever does he here call those whom he is about to accuse, and whom he is about to condemn, holy ones? To heighten the accusation, and to make the honour a greater mark of the punishment.
So too we ourselves, whenever we see certain people who have transgressed, and wish to reproach them more severely, address them together with their titles of dignity, so as to make the accusation heavier, saying:
Summon the deacon, or the presbyter!
Since, then, these too were reckoned a royal priesthood and a peculiar people, and prided themselves greatly on this;
既然這些人也曾被稱為君尊的祭司和屬神的子民,並且大大以此自豪;
21:120
and from this very thing he weaves the magnitude of the charges.
Those who make his covenant upon sacrifices.
Since, daring countless evils, and practising so many forms of wickedness—plundering, taking more than their share, murdering, committing adultery, mingling blood upon blood—they nevertheless supposed that they were achieving great things, and fulfilling the law and the covenant, if only they should sacrifice sheep and calves, he therefore reproaches them on this very score, and mocking them, says:
Those who make his covenant upon sacrifices;
就是那些憑祭物與他立約的人;
21:124
that is, those who suppose that, for their salvation, it suffices to slaughter the bodies of irrational animals.
And the heavens shall declare his righteousness.
Again here, wishing to show the resplendence of his righteousness—its brightness, its clarity, its incontrovertibleness, its acknowledged character—he brings in the insensible elements proclaiming it after the very same fashion as he was saying before:
Determining what is just for each one, he says.
For he did not here set down simply the act of judging, but in order to make clear that he is also righteous, and that he grants this to others as well.
For in the case of God, the word 'Judge' is taken in the sense of 'righteous,' just as Paul also has set it down, saying:
For how shall God judge the world? For this is above all judgement, this is above all what makes one a judge—not merely to render a verdict, but to render it justly.
But the Jews shall be judged—both those of that time, and those who afterward transgressed under the New Covenant;
但猶太人必受審判——既有那時代的人,也有此後在新約之下違法犯罪的人;
21:132
the former having nature and the law as their accuser, but the latter, together with these, also the things that were done by Christ unto
For what could they say, or what cause could they put forward, on account of which they did not believe? But attend to the things being said, I beseech you, that you may be able to silence those who contradict.
For it is better that they, being refuted by us now, should be set right, than that, thinking they conquer, they should depart thither and be condemned by the common Judge of the whole world.
What, then, could the Jews say—for what reason did they slay Christ? What small or great thing did they have to charge against him? 'Because he made himself God,' one says.
And yet these were not the words spoken at the time of the cross, but certain others.
For they did not say, 'He who makes himself God,' but, 'He who makes himself a king is no friend of Caesar.'
And yet many times they wished to make him king by their vote, and he fled.
But before this, he says, they were bringing the charge that he made himself God.
And what does this mean? For if it were falsely and unjustly, and He was not what He claimed, the accusation would have had some reason;
這是甚麼意思呢?因為倘若是虛謊而不義的,且祂實在不是這樣,那麼這控告倒還有些道理;
21:141
but if it were justly done, then He ought to have been worshipped, not crucified.
Let us therefore see whether, not being truly God, He was making Himself God — that is, whether He was demonstrating and manifesting it.
From what source, then, do you wish to learn? From the things of that time? From the things of the present? From the things surrounding His birth? Who, then, was ever born of a virgin? Who displayed such a star? Who led magi over so great a road, not by necessity and force, but by persuasion and revelation? Do you see all creation acknowledging its Master? Nature yields first, and does not contradict, nor stand against Him, saying:
I have not learned to bring forth a child from a virgin's womb;
我未曾學會使孩子從童女的胎中生出;
21:145
I do not know how to make a mother apart from marriage;
我不曉得如何使婦人不藉婚姻而為母;
21:146
but it departed from itself and yielded up its own bounds;
」然而它卻超越了自己,讓出了自身的界限;
21:147
for it recognized its own Master.
Again, when He was born, angels appeared, announcing upon earth Him who is in the heavens; and the earth became heaven, since the King was here; and the Magi came and worshipped, having arrived from so great a distance;
祂降生之時,眾天使又顯現,在地上宣告那位在諸天之上者;地就成了天,因為君王在此;博士也從那麼遙遠的地方前來敬拜;
21:149
and the child lay in a manger in Palestine, while these men from a barbarian land offered such honour and worship as is fitting to offer to God.
But perhaps they will not accept these things, and will demand other signs — those pertaining to the present generation.
Yet neither shall we be at a loss for these.
He is surrounded on every side with righteous deeds.
For above all, not even here have they any shadow of contradiction to allege.
For even if you were not present when He was born of a virgin, you ought to have believed the prophet who says:
Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son;
「看哪,必有童女懷孕生子;
21:156
and they shall call His name Emmanuel.
If you were not present when, clothed in flesh, He went about the earth, and the Master consorted with His servants, meet with Jeremiah, and he too will discourse with you, saying thus:
no other shall be reckoned beside Him.
He found out all the way of knowledge, and gave it to Jacob His servant, and to Israel who was beloved by Him.
After these things He was seen upon the earth, and consorted with men.
And in all the other cases too you will see the prophets — whose books you turn over in vain and worry to this very day — clearly proclaiming all things for the sake of this very theme.
But the contests against these people have both often been spoken of by us, and will be spoken of again;
但我們與這些人的爭論,既已屢次論及,將來也還要再論;
21:163
for the present, however, let us hold to the matters before us.
And the heavens shall declare His righteousness, for God is judge.
Here it seems to me that he calls 'righteousness' His great care, His loving-kindness towards those very people, and His manifold and varied dispensation towards all men — that through creation, that through the Law, that through grace, that through things visible, that through things invisible, that through the prophets, that through the angels, that through the apostles, that through chastisements, that through benefactions, that through threats, that through promises, that through the ordering that accords with the times.
Hear, O My people, and I will speak to you; O Israel, and
See again His forbearance and gentleness from the very preamble.
For just as if a man should say to another man who is making a tumult and disturbance, 'If you will listen, I speak';
因為正如一個人對另一個吵鬧攪擾的人說:「你若肯聽,我才說話」;
21:169
so too the Master to His servants: 'If you will hear Me,' He says, 'I will speak.'
For indeed they were slothful and slack, and would not give heed to the reading of the laws even for a little while in quietness.
And a certain prophet who dwelt in Persia, making this plain, said:
I shall be to them as the sound of a sweet-toned harp;
and they continually told the prophets not to prophesy — nay rather, they even thrust them away, and thought themselves troubled by them.
And a king too is shown threatening a certain prophet and commanding him not to gather crowds.
I am the God, thy God.
The repetition is not set down without purpose; but since He was speaking to those who were insensible and hardened and deafened, He raises the subject of His lordship, giving thereby the best possible beginning to the discourse that follows, and showing that they owe Him their liberty, and would in justice be bound to pay it as a debt — as servants to a Master, as works to a Craftsman, as those who have received the greatest benefactions and been honoured with so great an honour.
21:177
I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices;
「我並不因你的祭物責備你;
21:178
and thy burnt-offerings are continually before Me.
For thus the rest of the prophets also accuse them, because, overlooking the greater part of virtue, they placed their hopes of salvation in these things.
For indeed they were about to put this forward in their own defense, saying that 'We pour out sacrifices, we offer up whole burnt offerings.'
But it was not on account of these things, He says, that I came to enter into judgment, nor to bring an accusation because these were neglected.
And Isaiah reaches them even more forcibly than these, saying:
'What to Me is the multitude of your sacrifices? I am full.'
'The whole burnt offering of rams, and the fat of lambs, and the blood of bulls and of goats I do not desire.'
'For who has required these things at your hands?' And yet many words concerning sacrifices have been spoken;
「誰向你們討這些,要你們親手獻上呢?」然而,關於祭物已經說了許多的話;
21:186
yet it was not because He primarily willed these things that He gave the law, but because He condescended to their weakness.
'To what purpose do you bring Me frankincense from Sheba, and cinnamon from a far country?' And all the prophets, so to speak, declare that this is no great thing.
Therefore He Himself also, beginning, spoke thus:
'God, I am your God;'
and thereby showing that this manner of service is unworthy of Him.
For God must be served, not through smoke and the savor of burning fat, but through the best and bodiless and spiritual conduct of life.
But the demons of the heathen are not so; rather, they even seek after these things.
This too a certain poet among the Greeks appears to show, saying:
'For this is the honor that we have obtained as our portion.'
But our God is not so.
For those demons, thirsting for human blood and wishing little by little to lead men on to these murderous deeds, kept demanding these things continually;
因為那些鬼魔渴求人的血,想要漸漸地引誘人陷入這些兇殺的行為,就不斷地索求這些東西;
21:197
but He, wishing little by little to draw them away even from the slaughter of the irrational beasts, made use of this condescension, and permitted sacrifices in order that He might abolish sacrifices.
'I will not accept calves out of your house, nor he-goats out of your flocks.'
'For all the wild beasts of the forest are Mine, the cattle upon the mountains and the oxen.'
'I know all the birds of the heaven, and the beauty of the field is with Me.'
See how, little by little, He raises up the mind of those who are earthbound, opening up their hardened understanding, and showing that it was not from any need that He enjoined these things, nor because He accepted them that He gave them as law.
'For if I willed to be served in this way,' He says, 'holding the whole world beneath the sun, and being Myself the Creator of all things, I would have provided sacrifices for Myself in lavish abundance.'
Then, both ridiculing and mocking them, so that the accusation might become still more striking, He added:
21:204
'If I were hungry, I would not tell you;'
'for the whole inhabited world is Mine, and the fullness thereof.'
For since He Himself permitted these things in order that little by little He might lead them away from them, but they remained fixed in this paltry practice, reaping nothing great from
this condescension, therefore, speaking somewhat more grossly and in a more human way, He says:
21:208
'If I were hungry, I would not tell you;'
for God will not hunger, will not grow weary;
因為神不飢餓,也不困乏;
21:210
nor, if I willed to be served by these things, would I be at a loss for countless sacrifices and whole burnt offerings.
'For indeed all things lie before Me in great abundance, and being Myself their Lord and Master, I wish to receive My own from you, that by this manner of the way I may draw you to friendship with Me, and withdraw you from the habit of vain things.'
Then, leading them up again to something higher, He says:
'Shall I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?' 'For these things,' He says, 'I did not even command men to do, but I appointed the greatest punishment for those who eat blood.'
'How then should I have need of blood, I who lead My servants away from such a feast?' Having therefore cast out all these things, and shown them to be unworthy of Him, and mingled much ridicule with the accusation, He did not halt His discourse at this point, but shows the manner of another sacrifice, which is a kind of the best physician's art, leading away from things that profit nothing, and laying upon the wounds the things that are able to set them right.
For after bringing these things to completion, He says:
'And how shall I sacrifice,' one asks? Without blood.
For this above all is a sacrifice befitting God.
Therefore, having said, 'Sacrifice to God,' He added, 'a sacrifice of praise;'
因此,祂說了「你要向神獻祭」之後,就接著說「當獻感謝的祭」;
21:219
that is, of thanksgiving, of sacred hymns, of the glorifying that is through works.
And what he says means something like this:
So live that your Master may be glorified.
This very thing Christ also taught, when He said:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
For praise is nothing else than commendation, glory and good report.
Let your life then be such that your Master may be well spoken of, and you will have brought in a perfect sacrifice.
This is the sacrifice which Paul also seeks after, when he says:
Present your members a living sacrifice, holy, well-pleasing to God.
And elsewhere again the same prophet says:
I will praise the name of my God with a song; I will magnify Him with praise;
我要以詩歌讚美我神的名,以稱謝尊祂為大;
21:230
and this will please God more than a young bullock that has horns and hoofs.
Thus too did Job offer sacrifice after those blows that were beyond nature, giving thanks and uttering these very words:
The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; as it seemed good to the Lord, so also has it come to pass;
賞賜的是耶和華,收取的也是耶和華;耶和華看為美的,事就這樣成了;
21:233
blessed be the name of the Lord forever.
And pay your vows to the Most High.
By 'vows' he here means our supplications, so that we should persevere continually in prayer, and repay with all speed whatever we have promised.
For after the promise, the matter becomes a debt.
Thus Hannah rendered back her son, as a most weighty debt.
You too, then, whether you promise almsgiving, or a chaste life, or any other such thing, make haste toward the discharging of it.
But if anyone examines it strictly, even if he makes no promise, he owes to God the things of virtue.
And declaring this, Christ said:
For what we were bound to do, we have done.
And yet He was speaking the parable of the servant who was commanded to render the least service — not to recline at table, but to pass by and to serve.
Do not delay to pay your vow.
Have you made a promise? Pay it, lest death come upon you and cut it short.
for I was not master of my own life.
For this reason it was needful not to delay, considering the uncertainty of one's departure, and that you are not master of your life nor of your going hence.
So that what seems to be a defense is in fact an accusation.
For your failure to pay was not, after all, the doing of death, but of your own delay and postponement.
And call upon Me in the day of your affliction, and I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.
Do you see the recompense given out of great abundance? What then could be equal to such lovingkindness,
when He gives us wages even for virtue itself, and wages far greater than the toils, and bestowed at the very moment of need? And why, one asks, did He say:
Call upon Me? Why does He wait to be called by us? Because He desires to make our intimacy with Him greater, and our friendship toward Him warmer — both by giving, and by being called upon, and by our receiving.
For virtue draws us near to God, and the recompense works the same effect;
因為德行使我們與神親近,那報償也成就同樣的果效;
21:254
and prayer, again, knits together this same intimacy.
21:255
And in giving, too, you yourself receive;
並且在施予之時,你自己也在領受;
21:256
for He Himself has no need of these things.
So that even if you become forbearing, or moderate, or chaste, you have added nothing to God, but have made yourself splendid and better;
所以,你縱然變得寬厚、節制、或貞潔,你並沒有給神增添甚麼,乃是使你自己變得光彩、更為美好;
21:258
yet nevertheless, even for these things He appoints for you, as though you were benefiting Him, the greatest wages and crowns.
And even before those crowns, you enjoy no small pleasure, being nourished by a good conscience, and given wings by good hopes.
By 'a day of affliction' he means here, not the affliction of calamities, nor that of adverse circumstances, but rather this: that even if sin wages war, even if the devil lays siege by introducing wicked desires, you will enjoy an abundant alliance of help.
21:261
'And I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.'
Once again here He says this, not because He stands in need of glory from us — for how could He, who is the God of glory? — but so that through the hymn of thanksgiving there may arise the remembrance of His benefit, and a warmer disposition toward Him, and that one may above all obtain the greatest well-being of life.
Nor would one miss the mark of propriety if he were to say that here He calls 'a day of affliction' also the day that is to come;
若有人說,祂在此所稱的「患難的日子」也是指那將要來的日子,這話也不算失了合宜的分寸;
21:264
for that affliction is unceasing.
For here, indeed, death when it comes puts an end to calamities, and friends by their comfort, and an anticipated conclusion; and often, too, an expected change of affairs, and the length of time, has softened the soul's suffering, as has the misfortune of one's neighbors.
For to have companions in one's sorrows, and to see many such examples, has seemed to many to be a great source of consolation.
But there, nothing of the sort exists;
但在那裡,卻毫無這一類的事;
21:268
for neither is there anyone present to console, but all are in a desolation, bereft of friends.
Nor does length of time soften the pain — for how could it, while the flame presses upon them throughout? —
for the punishment is immortal, and the bodies that are chastised are likewise immortal;
因為那刑罰是不朽的,而受刑的身體也照樣是不朽的;
21:271
nor even is there that which seems to many to bring consolation — namely, to see others in chastisement.
For, in the first place, it is not even possible to see those who are being chastised, since the darkness, serving as a partition in place of every barrier, overshadows their eyes;
因為,首先,根本無法看見那些正在受刑的人,因為黑暗代替一切間隔作了屏障,遮蔽了他們的眼目;
21:273
and next, the excess of the pain does not even allow one to gain the perception of this consolation.
The rich man, at any rate, reaped from that place no ground for consolation, nor did those who gnash their teeth.
But to the sinner God said:
'Why do you declare My ordinances?' Have you seen the perfectly tuned lyre, the harmonious harp, sounding forth one harmony in its diverse notes? For this same thought may be seen laid down both among the apostles and among other prophets;
「你為何講述我的律例呢?」你可曾見過那調校完美的琴、那諧和的豎琴,以各樣不同的音調奏出一種和諧之聲麼?因為這同一的思想,在使徒中間可以見到,在其他先知那裡也有記載;
21:277
and Paul indeed speaks somewhat in this manner, showing, he too, that there is no benefit in teaching others, when a man does not first take himself in hand and teach himself.
For since they took great pride — as in their sacrifices, so also in possessing the Law and in being reputed teachers of others — showing that they reap no great gain when they themselves remain untaught, and rebuking such men more vehemently, he says:
'You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? You who abhor idols, do you commit sacrilege? You who boast in the Law, do you dishonor God through the transgression of the Law?' Therefore he said also concerning himself:
'I fear, lest by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified;'
thereby demolishing the inflated conceit of those who think highly of themselves over the teaching of the word, while they themselves are destitute of virtue.
And in another way, too, he handles this argument when directing it against the Jews, when he says:
'For when the Gentiles, who have not the Law, do by nature the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law unto themselves.'
'For not the hearers of the Law are just before God, but the doers of the Law shall be justified.'
'They who cling to the Law knew Me not.'
'In vain has the false pen of the scribes been made.'
For what reason? 'Because the turtledove and the swallow, and the sparrows of the field, knew the times of their coming, but My people knew not My judgments.'
But this psalmist says that the man who does not pursue virtue not only gains nothing from teaching others, but even casts himself out of that very seat of honor.
For if in the courts outside the Church the offender is punished with the dishonor of enforced silence, how, he says, could one who is liable for sin have a voice in the common school of teaching? And this school is greater than that tribunal.
For there, indeed, those who are chastised pay penalties;
因為在那法庭裡,受刑的人乃是償付刑罰;
21:291
but here everything is done so that the offenders may not be punished, but may through repentance set right what has been done amiss.
And in royal courts, too, no one would become an interpreter of the royal voice if he were found to be of corrupt life.
For what reason do you recount ordinances and teach others, while you in fact do the very opposite, your life contradicting your words and turning away some of those who would give heed? For you do not so much teach by your words as you lead them astray by your deeds.
For this reason Christ also praises that teacher who displays a teaching made perfect through works as well as through words.
'For whosoever shall do and teach them,' He says, 'the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.'
Let your life, therefore, have a resplendent voice, teaching these things;
所以,要讓你的生活發出光輝的聲音,教導這些真理;
21:297
and even if you stop up your mouth, you will sound forth more brilliantly than a trumpet, both to those who are present and to those who are far off.
Thus does the heaven declare the glory of God;
諸天正是這樣述說神的榮耀;
21:299
having no mouth, moving no tongue, sending forth no breath from below, but by the beauty of its appearance conducting the beholder to wonder at the Creator.
What, therefore, the beauty of appearance is there in the heaven, let virtue be that upon your soul.
But if, being defiled and having ten thousand accusers, and above all your own conscience, you are eager to lay hold of the teacher's chair, then whenever you accuse wickedness you will be accusing no others more than yourself.
And do you take up my covenant in your mouth? Well did he say it;
「你竟用口舌傳講我的約嗎?」他說得好;
21:303
for the heart is desolate of the fruits that come from these things, and the lips move in vain, and to the condemnation of the one who speaks.
But if one should search out the mind, he will find that the warfare is great.
But you hated instruction, and cast my words behind you.
By 'instruction' he here means the teaching of the law, which orders the soul, which drives away wickedness, and which plants virtue.
How then do you handle it and sow it into others, while you yourself do not possess it in your deeds? For 'you cast my words behind you,' he says.
For not only did you add nothing beyond the teaching of the law, but you even maimed that which you had from nature.
For concerning the things not to be done, and the things that are not of such a kind, the reasons are naturally implanted in us.
But you thrust them away, and did not keep them in remembrance.
If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and with the adulterer you cast in your lot.
For since it is not possible to find a man altogether without sin—
Who shall boast that he has a pure heart? or who shall speak with confidence that he is clean from sin? And Paul, having said, 'I know nothing against myself,' added:
21:314
'yet I am not thereby justified.'
and, 'The righteous man is his own accuser in the first speaking,' it is plain that it is concerning the sins committed by him;
又說:「義人在起初申訴時是自己的控告者」,這顯然是指他自己所犯的罪;
21:316
one might say that, if all are in sins, and he commanded the sinner not to recount the ordinances, who then will there be to recount them? Therefore, lest anyone say these things, he also sets down kinds of sins according to their species.
For there is a sin unto death, even as Eli also said:
'If a man sinning shall sin against a man, the priest shall pray for him;
「人若得罪人,有祭司為他祈禱;
21:319
but if he sin against the Lord, who shall pray for him?' And in the law also some things were incurable, so as to be punished even with death;
但人若得罪耶和華,誰能為他祈禱呢?」在律法中也有些罪是不能醫治的,甚至要用死刑懲罰;
21:320
but others had some very speedy remedy;
但另有些罪卻有某種極快速的補救之法;
21:321
so also Christ in the New Covenant:
'If your brother sin,' he says, 'reprove him between you and him alone.'
'But if he will not hear, take with you still two more,' he says.
'If he will not hear these either, let him be to you as the heathen and the tax-collector.'
And yet elsewhere, when Peter had said:
'How often, if my brother sin against me, shall I forgive him?' and having heard:
but here, after two admonitions, he shows the offense to be great, and does not compel one to remain any longer.
What then? Are these things contrary to those? By no means;
那麼怎樣呢?這些話與那些話相矛盾嗎?絕不是;
21:329
but the 'seventy times seven' he speaks of the one who repents.
For how could anyone forgive him who neither confesses that he has sinned nor repents? For indeed, when we ask the physician for remedies, we also show him the wound.
Who then is the sinner concerning whom the Scripture here speaks? Let us listen with exactness.
For indeed he depicts him, saying thus in what follows:
If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and with adulterers you cast in your lot.
Your mouth abounded in wickedness, and your tongue wove together deceits.
Sitting, you spoke against your brother, and against your mother's son you laid a stumbling-block.
τες
Do you see, as in a picture of wickedness, its colors, and how the evil man has become a beast through wickedness, having betrayed the nobility of his nature? Let us not, therefore, go over the picture superficially, but examine it exactly and part by part.
'If you saw a thief,' he says, 'you ran along with him.'
This is the cause of all evils;
這是一切惡事的根源;
21:339
this most of all is what overturns virtue, what slackens the zeal of the many for what is good—when certain people not only do not rebuke, but even take pleasure together with those who sin.
This is no less a thing than to sin itself.
Hear, at any rate, what Paul says:
They not only do these things themselves, but also give hearty approval to those who practise them.
And this too is no small sin: even though a man does not himself commit the evil deeds, yet to take pleasure together with those who do evil.
For the one has necessity to plead, he can allege his poverty, even if the pretexts are not reasonable;
因為那犯罪的人尚可以推說有其不得已的苦衷,可以歸咎於貧窮,縱然這些藉口並不充分;
21:345
but you, on what ground do you praise the deed that has been done, when you do not even reap from it any pleasure of your own? And that man, perhaps, will even come to repentance;
但是你呢?你憑什麼稱讚那已經做成的惡事,你甚至沒有從中得着任何屬於自己的快樂?而且那人或許還會悔改;
21:346
you, however, shut even these doors, and do away with the remedy, and overturn so great a consolation, on every side heaping up earth to block for him the harbour of return unto repentance.
When, therefore, he sees you, who are outside the sin, and who ought to rebuke it, not only not rebuking, but even helping to conceal it, and not merely concealing it, but even joining in the deed, what will he think concerning himself? and what concerning the thing that has been dared? For, as for the most part, the greater number of men cast these votes concerning what is to be done not out of their own judgement alone, but being corrupted also by the disposition of others;
那麼,當他看見你這置身於罪之外、本應斥責的人,不但不斥責,反而幫着遮掩,而且不僅遮掩,還一同參與,他對自己會怎麼想呢?對所膽敢做的事又會怎麼想呢?因為大多數人往往不只是憑自己的心意來對當行之事投下這些判斷的票,也會被別人的心志所敗壞;
21:348
and if the one who has sinned sees all men turning away from him, he will consider that he has wrought some great and wicked deed;
犯罪的人若看見眾人都轉臉不理他,就會認為自己做了某件重大而邪惡的事;
21:349
but when he sees them not only not indignant, nor displeased, but even bearing it gently and lending a hand, then having corrupted the tribunal that comes from conscience, since the vote of the many co-operates with his corrupted judgement, what will he not dare? and when will he ever condemn himself and cease from sinning without fear? Wherefore it is needful that, even though a man does the wicked deed, he condemn himself;
但當他看見他們不但不憤慨、不厭惡,反而寬容忍讓,還伸手相助,那時他既已敗壞了那出於良心的審判台,眾人的票數又與他敗壞的判斷相配合,他還有什麼不敢做的呢?他幾時才會定自己的罪,止住那毫無懼怕的犯罪呢?所以人縱然行了惡事,也必須定自己的罪;
21:350
for this is a way toward departing from what is wicked;
因為這乃是一條離棄惡事的道路;
21:351
and even though a man does not himself do the good, let him at least praise the good.
For eager readiness is a way toward the doing of it.
Here, however, since he also lends a hand in the things that are done, with good reason does he brand him with exceeding severity.
For if vice, though rebuked, flourishes so greatly, and virtue, though praised, is scarcely called forth to its own labours and sweats;
因為惡若受了斥責尚且如此茂盛,而德行雖受稱讚也難得被喚起去付上它自己的辛勞與汗水;
21:355
what will happen if this should not take place? One might see this happening often even among a company of priests;
那麼,若這事都不發生,又會怎樣呢?人甚至在一班祭司中間也常見到這種事發生;
21:356
and if among disciples this is grievous, much more so among teachers.
What are you doing, O man? The law has been transgressed, temperance has been despised, so many offences have been dared by one of those consecrated to holy office, things above have been turned below, and do you not shudder? But the prophet calls even the very insensible elements to share in and take part in the lamentation over the evils that have been committed against all in common, saying, 'The heaven was astonished, and the earth shuddered exceedingly.'
'Carmel shall mourn, the wine shall mourn, the vine shall mourn.'
And the lifeless things mourn, and groan, and share in indignation with the Master;
連那無生命之物都哀慟、歎息,與主人一同憤慨;
21:360
and do you, the rational being, feel no pain? do you not rebuke, do you not become a stern avenger of the laws of God, but even take part in the fellowship? And what pardon could you have? For God does not need an avenger;
for does He stand in need of helpers? But He wills that you become His servant in this, that you may not fall into the same sins, becoming more temperate through your indignation against another, so that from this also you may show your love for God.
For when, another having sinned, you pass it by, and do not pursue it, nor feel any pain, you make your own soul more slothful and prone to fall, and above all you often prepare yourself to fall into the same sins;
因為當別人犯了罪,你卻置之不理,不去追究,也不感痛苦,你便使自己的靈魂變得更懶散、更容易跌倒,尤其常常使自己準備好陷入同樣的罪中;
21:363
and him too you injure in no ordinary way by this ill-timed favour, making the reckonings sterner for him in the age to come, and rendering him more slothful toward the present things.
These things have been said not concerning thieves only, but concerning every sin;
這些話不僅是論到偷竊的人所說的,也是論到一切罪所說的;
21:365
and he has set down the last of the offences, that you may know that he who has no pardon in such a case will much more, in the case of another sin, not enjoy this consolation.
Hear, then, what he says next as well:
'And with adulterers you set your portion.'
For that former thing is much less than this.
And a certain man, making a comparison of these sins, spoke thus:
21:370
'It is no marvel if a man be caught stealing;
「賊因飢餓偷竊,人不藐視他;
21:371
for he steals in order that he may fill his soul when it is hungry.'
If, then, this is unpardonable, much more so is adultery.
Here he calls fornication adultery.
If, then, you see one of those who herd together with you committing fornication and yet coming forward to the mysteries, say to the one who ministers at the distribution of these things:
'Such a one is unworthy of the mysteries; keep back his profane hands.'
For if he is not even worthy to declare the ordinances, consider to what a pitch the things of his punishment will advance for him, when he even lays hold of the sacred table—and not for him alone, but also for the one who helps to conceal it.
For he did not say, 'And you committed adultery,' but, 'With adulterers you set your portion.'
Alas! how great an evil it is to cover over the corruptions of others, seeing that he says such a one is even a partaker of the punishment for the offence, and no less than the offender himself.
For the one has his passion to plead, even if the pretext is unpardonable, just as the thief has his hunger;
因為那犯罪的人尚有他的情慾可以推說,縱然那藉口不可饒恕,正如那賊有他的飢餓可說;
21:380
Why then, when you have no share in the pleasure, do you become a partner and sharer in the punishment? It is for this very reason that even the pagan judges chastise not only those who dared the deed, but also any of the household servants whom they find to have been privy to the matter; and the masters who hand them over would gladly drink up their blood and taste of their very flesh, and they reckon the responsibility for what was done to belong to these servants no less than to the woman who committed the adultery.
For those who did not draw back the curtains have themselves given the greater licence to the things that were concealed;
因為那些不肯拉開帷幕的人,正是自己給了那些被隱藏之事更大的放縱權柄;
21:382
these men have outraged both the woman who was seduced and the wronged husband and the adulterer himself.
For had they given warning beforehand, had they made the matter plain, they would have scared away the whole quarry.
And just as those men are most of all the ones who cast others into the snares, namely those who
conceal the snares, and lie in wait round about for those who are about to be caught, and hide from every side every deceit, and allow neither a sound nor anything else to occur that might be able to scare away the prey;
把羅網掩藏起來,環伏在那將要被擒者的四周,從各方隱藏一切詭計,既不容有任何聲響,也不容有任何足以驚走獵物之事發生的人;
21:386
so too here: if you sit down beside the snare set by the devil, and knowing that the adulterer is about to fall in, you do not raise an outcry nor startle him, then most of all you destroy him.
Do not, I beg you, allege to me that saying so full of unfeeling callousness:
'What is it to me? I mind my own affairs.'
For then most of all will you be minding your own affairs, when you seek your own interests in what is profitable to your neighbour.
Let no one seek his own, but that of the other.
In order, he says, that you may find your own, seek that of the other.
Your mouth has abounded in wickedness, and your tongue has woven together deceits.
Sitting, you spoke against your brother, and against the son of your mother you laid a stumbling-block.
'I do these things out of love for humanity.'
First of all, what kind of love for humanity could this be — not to hinder nor to hold back one who is about to fall into a pit? To gratify an unjust pleasure? To look on while a man drinks a deadly poison? Yet you will not even be able to say this.
For that this is not love for humanity, but drowsiness and sloth and indolence — how is it that, leaving the wrongdoer alone, you speak evil of the brother who has done no wrong? How do you plot against him who has done no wrong nor committed any offence? See how wickedness is stretched to its extreme on both sides.
The one who is drunk with lust you do not hinder from his drunkenness, so that he might come to his senses; but the one who has done no wrong you chastise.
For sitting, you spoke against your brother, and against the son of your mother you laid a stumbling-block.
See how by the further explanation he heightens the accusation.
Him who was born of the same birth-pangs as you, he says, him who shared the same womb with you, him who partook of the same house and table and nourishment, him who sprang from one root, him who has the same origin of generation, him who from earliest infancy grew up together with you — this one you speak evil of; and not only do you speak evil of him, but you even carry your plot into deed. For this is the meaning of 'You laid a stumbling-block.'
But if one must not speak evil of him who shared in one's natural birth-pangs, much more must one not speak evil of him who shared in the spiritual ones.
Do not, then, either let him who is about to sin fall down headlong, nor slander and revile him who has done no wrong.
21:403
For the one springs from envy, the other from callousness;
因為前者出於嫉妒,後者出於冷酷無情;
21:404
for not to check him who is about to fall is a mark of callousness;
因為不去攔阻那將要跌倒的人,乃是冷酷無情的表現;
21:405
while to cast down him who is standing firm is a mark of envy.
And see how he hints not simply at the accuser, but at the one who does this deed with guile and eager diligence.
For sitting, he says, you spoke against your brother.
And Cain, when he slew his brother, drove but one man out of this present life;
該隱殺了他的弟兄,也不過把一個人從今世逐出;
21:409
but these men, by the evil they speak, cast down countless multitudes, and themselves first of all.
For they harm not only the one accused, but others also;
因為他們所害的不僅是那被控告的人,還有別的人;
21:411
or rather, they harm only those who receive the slander.
For he who is falsely spoken evil of is not only not wronged, but even has a very great reward.
For it is not the one who suffers, but the one who does the evil, who is deserving of punishment;
因為配受刑罰的,不是那受害的人,乃是那作惡的人;
21:414
so also it is the one who speaks, not the one who hears, provided that the latter gives no reasonable handles for the evil-speaking.
Let us not, then, be zealous for this — that we may not be spoken evil of; for this is impossible;
所以,我們不要為此殷勤——就是要免得被人毀謗;因為這是不可能的;
21:416
and there is a declaration of Christ which says, 'Woe to you, when all men shall speak well of you'; but let our zeal be that we may give no handles.
For indeed he who wishes to be well spoken of by all often ruins his own soul, being enamoured of human glory, rendering service in matters where he ought not, pleasing men in things where he should not, so as to purchase their favour.
Again, he who despises being spoken ill of by all likewise brings destruction upon himself as well.
As it is impossible for the virtuous man to be well spoken of by all, so it is impossible that he who has furnished many handles from many quarters for being spoken ill of should not be spoken ill of by all.
But if, while you present a blameless life, there are still those who accuse you, then your reward is even greater, just as it happened in the case of the apostles and of those noble men.
But this too we must know: that even if someone speaks ill of us in a matter which our conscience does not condemn, we ought not on that account to despise the accuser because of the harm he does himself, but rather to do everything with fitting circumspection, so as to remove even the unreasonable pretext.
For this reason Paul too, in the matter of money, sent many to convey the provisions for the poor;
正因如此,保羅在錢財的事上也差派了許多人,去運送給窮人的供養;
21:423
and he gives the reason, saying:
'That no one should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us.'
For it was not the case that, seeing they were going to be wrongly offended, he overlooked and despised the matter;
並不是他見到他們將要無故因此絆跌,就置之不理、輕忽了此事;
21:426
but rather, since he had it in his power to dissolve the stumbling-block, he made provision for the very ones who were being offended.
'If food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to stumble.'
And yet these things were matters of indifference;
然而這些原是無關緊要的事;
21:429
but nevertheless, if it brings a stumbling-block, he says, even though it does me no harm, I do not despise the salvation of those who are being offended.
For if a harm should arise that is greater than the salvation, then despise the one who is offended;
因為倘若所生的損害大於那救恩,你就可以不顧那絆跌的人;
21:431
for this would be the universal boundary and rule, teaching when one ought to disregard those who are offended, and when not.
The Jews were offended because Paul did not keep the law, and on this account many tens of thousands fell away and went lame concerning the faith.
What then does he do? Wishing to heal the stumbling-block — for the salvation of so many tens of thousands was the greater thing — and to set right the lameness, he for the time hindered showing that he did not keep the law, which was the greater consideration.
Again they were offended, because he preached One who had been crucified;
他們又絆跌了,因為他所傳的是一位被釘十字架的;
21:435
here he disregarded those who were offended;
在此他便不顧那些絆跌的人;
21:436
for the gain of the preaching was the greater thing.
For when he was speaking to them concerning foods, and they were offended at his saying that it is not what enters that defiles a man, but what comes forth, he says:
'Every plant which my Father has not planted shall be rooted up.'
But when they demanded tribute of him, although he knew that it was not necessary to pay, nevertheless, since the time did not yet call for his dignity to be uncovered, he says:
'But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and in it you will find a stater;'
'give that to them for me and for you.'
For when he was laying down a law full of much lofty wisdom, and those men were incurable, he reasonably took no thought for them and dissolved the law;
因為當祂頒布一條滿含至高智慧的律時,那些人已無可救藥,祂理當不顧他們,就廢去了那律;
21:443
but when they were not yet able to receive the teaching concerning his dignity, he reasonably condescends again, and by the paying of the tribute veils the doctrine concerning his divinity.
'Sitting, you spoke against your brother.'
21:445
'But it was that I might correct him,' he says.
Then you ought not to have slandered him secretly, but, as Christ commanded, to have taken him aside privately and corrected him.
For accusations made in public often make men even more shameless;
因為公開的控告往往使人更加無恥;
21:448
and as long as most of those who sin see that it is possible for them to escape notice, they readily choose to turn back;
當那些犯罪的人中大多數,只要見到自己仍能不被人察覺,就樂意輕易回頭;
21:449
but when they have lost their good repute in the eyes of the many, some thereafter fall into despair and slide down into shamelessness.
21:450
'But I was wronged in some way by him.'
Why then do you also wrong yourself? For he who takes revenge thrusts the sword against himself.
For if you wish both to benefit yourself and to avenge yourself on him, speak well of the one who wronged you;
因為你若既願造福自己,又願向他報復,就當說那虧負你之人的好話;
21:453
in this way you will make many his accusers in your stead,
and you yourself will receive a great reward; but if you speak ill, you will not even be believed, being suspected of enmity.
So that the fruit of your zeal turns out to the very opposite of what you intended.
For you wish to wound his reputation, but the opposite comes about;
因為你本想傷害他的名聲,結果卻適得其反;
21:457
for this comes to pass through commendation, not through accusation;
因為這事乃是藉著稱讚成就的,而非藉著控告;
21:458
and you shame yourself the more, while your arrows will not so much as touch him.
For the enmity, meeting the minds of the hearers beforehand, does not allow what is said to be lodged in their ears, and the same thing happens as in the case of legal demurrers.
For when someone lodges an objection in a court of law, the whole case is for the moment dissolved;
因為當有人在法庭上提出抗辯時,整個案件便暫時陷於停頓;
21:461
so also here the suspicion of enmity does not permit the suit to be admitted for trial.
Do not, then, speak evil, lest you defile yourself as well; do not weave together filth with mire and brickwork, but plait garlands of roses and violets and the rest of the flowers;
因此,不要說惡言,免得連你自己也被玷污;不要用泥濘與磚土編織污穢之物,倒要用玫瑰、紫羅蘭和其餘的花朵編織花冠;
21:463
do not carry dung upon your mouth, like the beetles—for this is what slanderers do;
不要像糞金龜那樣在口中攜帶糞穢,因為誹謗者所行的正是如此;
21:464
they themselves are the first to enjoy the stench; but gather flowers, like the bees, and weave honeycombs after their manner, and become agreeable to all.
For everyone turns away from the slanderer as from one who reeks with rottenness, like some leech gorged with blood, or a beetle nourished on dung—feeding on the evils of others;
因為眾人都躲避誹謗者,如同躲避散發腐臭之人,如同躲避飽吸血液的水蛭,或以糞為食的糞金龜——他是靠別人的惡事餵養自己的;
21:466
but the man who keeps a mouth of good report they welcome as a common member, as a true brother, as a child, as a father.
And why do I speak of things present and the opinions of men? Consider for me that dreadful day, the tribunal that takes no bribe; for if you speak falsehoods, you will add to yourself a further burden of superfluous sins.
For I say to you that for every idle word which men shall speak, they shall give account for it to God in the day of judgment.
And even if what you say be true, he says, not even so will you escape condemnation, if you parade abroad your neighbor's misfortunes and reproaches.
Consider, at any rate, the Pharisee.
He was not a tax collector, yet he became more sinful than the tax collector, because he spoke ill of the tax collector.
The tax collector was not a Pharisee, yet he became more righteous than the Pharisee, because he counted himself wretched.
These things you have done, and I kept silence.
You supposed, in your lawlessness, that I would be like you.
I will reprove you, and set your sins in order before your face.
Do you see His unspeakable lovingkindness? Do you see the excess of His goodness? Do you see the boundless riches of His longsuffering? For here by 'silence' He means His longsuffering.
You dared such great things, He says, and I did not proceed against you, but bore with you and endured, giving you room for repentance.
But you not only gained nothing from this, but even ran aground upon greater wickedness.
For not only did you not change, nor were you put to shame, nor did you condemn yourself for the things that were done;
因為你不但沒有轉變,沒有慚愧,也沒有為所行的事定自己的罪;
21:480
but you even supposed that I—who had been longsuffering toward you, who had borne with you, who had kept silence, who had endured so much—did so, not out of longsuffering and lovingkindness, but because I did not wish to chastise these things, nor to be indignant at what was being done.
Understand these things, then, you that forget God.
For what has been said in a veiled manner? And what requires much searching out? Above all, the very manner of the teaching introduces a changed way of life.
For indeed, making no great account of the sacrifices, He introduces the evangelical legislation;
因為祂並不看重那些祭物,反倒引進了福音的律法;
21:484
and besides, since they were buried under the great heap of their sins, wishing to draw them up as from certain quagmires of wickedness, and as it were to purge away from their eyes the rheum which the preceding path of their evil habit had left, He rouses them to come to remembrance of the things that had been done, so that they may not, by consigning them to oblivion, depart without profit.
For the habit of sinning works much hardening upon the soul, and makes men senseless, and blinds the keen-sighted eye of the understanding.
21:486
...lest he snatch away, and there be none to deliver.
These are the words of a tender-loving mother—or rather, of a goodness that infinitely surpasses that tender affection.
For He who displayed so great an accusation, who showed forth so great a wrath, takes precaution beforehand.
He who said, 'I will reprove you, and set your sins in order before your face,' and who had pronounced a condemning sentence, again dissolves the sentence—not delivering them over to punishment as condemned, but handing them over, as those who ought to be set right, to admonition and counsel, chastening them by fear, and saying, 'Lest at any time he snatch you away like a lion, and there be none to deliver.'
The sacrifice of praise shall glorify Me, and there is the way in which I will show him the salvation of God.
Having shown His lovingkindness, having admonished, counseled, threatened, put in fear, and set the punishment before them undiluted, and having brought in His counsel, He tells also the manner by which it is possible to set right the things that had been done, saying:
The sacrifice of praise shall glorify Me.
Not only will it stay My wrath, nor merely loose the condemnation, but it will even glorify Me.
Behold the greatness of the good deed, when God is glorified on account of it.
And there is the way in which I will show him the salvation of God.
Do you see the unspeakable reward? Do you see the excess of His lovingkindness? For He promises to show the way of God, and the salvation of God that is truly salvation, to those who do what is right.
Let us therefore obey Him who promises, and by an upright life and a sacrifice of praise let us glorify Him.
For this is the way that leads to salvation, through this sacrifice;
因為這就是那通往救恩的道路,是藉著這祭而成的;
21:499
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the might, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
