Marina was the only daughter of her father. Now when her father had entered a certain monastery, he changed his daughter's dress, so that she might appear not a woman but a male. And he asked the abbot and the brothers to receive his only son. When they assented to his prayers, she was received as a monk and was called Brother Marinus by all. She began to live very religiously and to be very obedient. Now when she was twenty-seven years old and her father felt himself drawing near to death, he called his daughter and, confirming her in her good purpose, charged her never to reveal to anyone that she was a woman. She therefore went frequently with a wagon and oxen and brought wood to the monastery.
Now she was accustomed to lodge in the house of a certain man, whose daughter, when she had conceived by a certain soldier and was questioned, asserted that the monk Marinus had violated her. But Marinus, being questioned why he had perpetrated so great a crime, confessed that he had sinned and begged pardon. Immediately cast out from the monastery, he remained at the door of the monastery, and remaining there for three years he was sustained by a morsel of bread. Afterward the son, weaned, was sent to the abbot and handed over to Marinus to be reared, and stayed there with him for two years. But he received everything with the greatest patience and in all things gave thanks to God. At last the brothers, taking pity on his humility and patience, received him into the monastery and enjoined upon him all the lowliest duties.
But he himself received everything cheerfully and did all things patiently and devoutly. At last, leading his life in good works, he departed to the Lord. Now when they washed his body and were arranging to bury it in a lowly place, looking they saw that he was a woman. All were astounded and terrified, and confessed that they had greatly wronged the handmaid of God. All ran to so great a spectacle and begged pardon for their ignorance and offense. They therefore placed her body honorably in the church. But she who had defamed the handmaid of God was seized by a demon, and confessing her crime and coming to the tomb of the virgin, she was set free. To whose tomb peoples flow together from every side, and many miracles are wrought there.
