Judges 1

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua that the sons of Israel enquired through the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Chananites, leading the way, to fight against them?

And the Lord said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.

And Judah said to Symeon his brother, Go up with me into my allotment, and let us set ourselves in array against the Chananites; and I also will go with you into your allotment. And Symeon went with him.

And Judah went up, and the Lord delivered the Chananite and the Pherezite into their hands; and they cut them down in Bezek, to the number of ten thousand men.

And they came upon Adonibezek in Bezek, and set themselves in array against him, and they cut down the Chananite and the Pherezite.

And Adonibezek fled, and they ran after him and caught him, and cut off the extremities of his hands and the extremities of his feet.

And Adonibezek said, Seventy kings, with the extremities of their hands and the extremities of their feet cut off, used to gather up what was under my table; as therefore I did, so God has repaid me. And they bring him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

And the sons of Judah were fighting against Jerusalem, and they took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.

And after these things the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Chananite who dwelt in the hill country and the south and the lowland.

And Judah went against the Chananite who dwelt in Chebron; and Chebron came out to meet them. Now the name of Chebron was formerly Kariatharboxepher. And they struck Sessi and Achinaan and Tholmin, the offspring of Enak.

And they went up from there against the inhabitants of Dabir; and the name of Dabir was formerly Kariathsophar, the City of Letters.

And Chaleb said, Whoever strikes the City of Letters and first takes it, to him I will give Ascha my daughter as a wife.

And Gothoniel, son of Kenez the brother of Chaleb, the younger, took it first; and Chaleb gave him Ascha his daughter as a wife.

And it came to pass at her coming in that Gothoniel urged her to ask of her father a field; and she murmured and cried out from off the donkey, You have given me away into a south land. And Chaleb said to her, What is it with you?

And Ascha said to him, Give me, I pray, a blessing, for you have given me away into a south land; and you shall give me a redemption of water. And Chaleb gave her according to her heart the redemption of the upper places and the redemption of the lower.

And the sons of Iothor the Kenite, the father-in-law of Moses, went up from the city of palms with the sons of Judah into the wilderness that is in the south of Judah, which is at the descent of Arad; and they settled with the people.

And Judah went with Symeon his brother, and he cut down the Chananite who dwelt in Sephek, and they utterly destroyed them; and he called the name of the city Anathema, that is, a Thing Devoted to Destruction.

And Judah did not inherit Gaza nor its borders, nor Ascalon nor its borders, nor Akkaron nor its borders, nor Azotus nor its surrounding lands.

And the Lord was with Judah, and he inherited the hill country; for they were not able to destroy utterly the inhabitants of the valley, because Rechab gave charge to them.

And they gave Chebron to Chaleb, as Moses had spoken; and he inherited from there the three cities of the sons of Enak.

And the sons of Benjamin did not take possession of the Iebousite who dwelt in Jerusalem; and the Iebousite dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.

And the sons of Joseph, they also went up to Baithel, and the Lord was with them.

And they encamped and spied out Baithel; and the name of their city was formerly Louza.

And the watchers looked, and behold, a man was coming out of the city; and they took him and said to him, Show us the entrance of the city, and we will deal mercifully with you.

And he showed them the entrance of the city; and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but the man and his kindred they let go.

And the man went into the land of the Chettiin, and built a city there, and called its name Louza; this is its name until this day.

And Manasseh did not remove Baithsan, which is the city of the Scythians, nor its daughter-towns, nor its surrounding villages, nor Thanak nor its daughter-towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor nor its daughter-towns, nor the inhabitant of Balak nor its surrounding villages nor its daughter-towns, nor the inhabitants of Magedo nor its surrounding villages nor its daughter-towns, nor the inhabitants of Ieblaam nor its surrounding villages nor its daughter-towns; and the Chananite began to dwell in this land.

And it came to pass, when Israel grew strong, that he put the Chananite to forced labour; but removing he did not remove him.

And Ephraim did not remove the Chananite who dwelt in Gazer; and the Chananite dwelt in his midst in Gazer, and became subject to forced labour.

And Zaboulon did not remove the inhabitants of Kedron, nor the inhabitants of Domana; and the Chananite dwelt in their midst and became subject to him for forced labour.

And Aser did not remove the inhabitants of Akcho, and it became subject to him for forced labour; nor the inhabitants of Dor, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor the inhabitants of Aalaph, nor Aschazi, nor Chelba, nor Nai, nor Ereo.

And Aser dwelt in the midst of the Chananite who inhabited the land, because he was not able to remove him.

And Nephthali did not remove the inhabitants of Baithsamys, nor the inhabitants of Baithanath; and Nephthali dwelt in the midst of the Chananite who inhabited the land; but the inhabitants of Baithsamys and Baitheneth became subject to them for forced labour.

And the Amorite pressed the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow him to come down into the valley.

And the Amorite began to dwell in the potsherd mountain, where the bears are and where the foxes are, in Myrsinon and in Thalabin; and the hand of the house of Joseph grew heavy upon the Amorite, and he became subject to them for forced labour.

And the border of the Amorite was from the ascent of Akrabin, from the Rock and upward.
