'If any man among you thinketh himself to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise.'
10:2
'For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.'
10:3
Which very thing I already said, that even before the proper season, having been carried forth into the accusation against him who had committed fornication,
10:4
並用寥寥數語隱約地將此事稍加揭露,震動了那人的良心之後,就再次奮力進到與那外面的智慧交戰,並向那些因這智慧而自高自大、撕裂教會的人提出責備;
and having enigmatically opened it up a little in a few words, and having shaken his conscience, he presses on again to the combat against the wisdom which is from without, and to the charges against those who from this source were puffed up and were rending the Church asunder;
10:5
so that, having added what was lacking, and having completed the whole subject with exactness, he might thus for the rest let loose his tongue to be borne with vehement force against the fornicator, having first skirmished against him by means of what he had said before.
10:6
「人不可自欺」這話,正是他主要針對那人所說的,先用懼怕把那人磨軟;
For indeed the words, 'Let no man deceive himself,' are of one who is directing them chiefly against that man, and softening him beforehand with fear;
10:7
and the discourse about the stubble is of one who is hinting chiefly at him; and the saying, 'Know ye not that ye are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?' For these two things are especially wont to lead us away from sin: when we consider the punishment laid up for sin, and when we reckon up our own dignity.
10:8
所以他把草和禾稭引到眾人面前,就激起了懼怕;
By bringing the grass and the stubble into the midst, then, he inspired fear;
10:9
又藉著述說他們本身高貴出身的尊榮,使他們知恥,前者使那較為麻木的人變好,後者連那較為明理的人也變好;
but by speaking of the worth of their own noble birth, he made them ashamed, by the former making the more insensible better, and by the latter even the more reasonable;
10:10
'If any man among you thinketh himself to be wise in this world, let him become a fool.'
10:11
正如他吩咐人要向世界成為死的,而這死不但毫無損害,反倒有益,成為生命的緣由;
Just as he bids a man become dead to the world, and this deadness does no harm at all, but even profits, becoming a cause of life;
10:12
so also he bids him become a fool to this world, thereby procuring for us the true wisdom.
10:13
Now he becomes a fool to the world who despises the wisdom which is from without, and is persuaded that it contributes nothing to him toward the apprehension of the faith.
10:14
所以,正如照著神的貧窮成為財富的緣由,卑微成為高升的緣由,輕看榮耀成為榮耀的緣由;
As therefore the poverty which is according to God becomes a cause of wealth, and lowliness of exaltation, and the despising of glory becomes a cause of glory;
10:15
so also becoming a fool makes a man wiser than all.
10:16
For with us all things are from their opposites.
10:17
And why did he not say, 'Let him lay aside his wisdom,' but, 'Let him become a fool'? That with all vehemence he might dishonour the outward instruction.
10:18
因為說「你當放下你的智慧」與說「你當變作愚拙」,並不是一樣的;
For it was not the same thing to say, 'Lay aside thy wisdom,' and, 'Become a fool;'
10:19
他又用另一種方式教導我們,不要以我們中間的樸拙為恥;
and in another way too he teaches us not to be ashamed of the simplicity that is among us;
10:20
for he utterly derides the things which are from without.
10:21
Wherefore neither does he dread the names, since he is confident in the power of the realities.
10:22
所以,正如那看似可羞辱的十字架,成了萬般美善的緣由,並成了那說不出之榮耀的根基與根源;
As therefore the cross, seeming to be a matter of reproach, became the cause of ten thousand good things, and a foundation and root of unspeakable glory;
10:23
so also that which seems to be foolishness became to us a cause of wisdom.
10:24
因為正如一個學錯了東西的人,若不把全部丟棄,將他的心靈磨平,潔淨地交給那將要書寫的人,就必不能清楚學得任何純正的道理;
For just as one who has learned something amiss, unless he lay aside the whole and smooth his soul and present it clean to him who is about to write, will learn nothing sound clearly;
10:25
so also with regard to the wisdom from without, unless you cast out the whole, and sweep clean your understanding, and present yourself to the faith on equal terms with the unlearned, you will know nothing noble with exactness.
10:26
For indeed those who see amiss, unless closing their eyes they commit themselves to others, but entrust their own affairs to the corrupted sight of their eyes, will err far more than those who see not at all.
10:27
And how, saith one, could a man lay aside this wisdom? By not making use of its doctrines.
10:28
Then, since he thus bade them so vehemently to depart from it, he also states the reason, saying:
10:29
'For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.'
10:30
For not only does it contribute nothing, but it even hinders.
10:31
One must therefore depart from it, inasmuch as it does harm.
10:32
Do you see how out of abundance he bore off the victory, having shown that it not only profits us nothing, but is even opposed to us? And he is not even content with his own proofs, but again he brought forward a testimony, saying:
10:33
'He that taketh the wise in their own craftiness.'
10:34
'In their craftiness,' that is, overcoming them with their own weapons.
10:35
For since they used their wisdom in order not to need God, by this very thing He convicted them, that they most of all need God.
10:36
How, and in what manner? In that having become fools through it, they were fittingly taken by it.
10:37
因為那些自以為不需要神的人,竟落到這樣缺乏的地步,以致顯得比漁夫和不識字的人還不如,末了竟需要這些人;
For those who thought they had no need of God came into such want as to appear inferior to fishermen and unlettered men, and to need these very men for the rest;
10:38
'In their craftiness He took them.'
10:39
因為說「我要滅絕智慧」,乃是為要引出這智慧毫無用處的意思;
For to say, 'I will destroy the wisdom,' was said with a view to introducing that it is of no use;
10:40
but the saying, 'He that taketh the wise in their own craftiness,' was with a view to showing the power of God.
10:41
Then he states also the manner in which He took them, adding yet another testimony:
10:42
'For the Lord,' he says, 'knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.'
10:43
But when Wisdom infinite thus reckons concerning them, and pronounces them to be such, what further proof dost thou seek of their utter folly? For the judgments of men in many cases go astray, but the sentence of God is everywhere beyond reach and incorruptible.
10:44
Having therefore set up so brilliant a trophy of the judgment from above, he thereafter employs vehement language, turning it against those who were subject, and speaking thus:
10:45
'Therefore let no man glory in men.'
10:46
Again he comes back to the former point, showing that not even over spiritual things ought they to be highly minded, seeing that they have nothing of their own.
10:47
既然那外在的智慧是有害的,而屬靈的恩賜又不是你們自己所賜的,你憑什麼可以誇口呢?論到外在的智慧,他說:「人不可自欺」,因為他們所看重的是有害的事;
When therefore the wisdom that is from without is harmful, and the spiritual gifts are not bestowed by yourselves, whence hast thou to glory? And in the case of outward wisdom he says, 'Let no man deceive himself,' since they were minding a harmful thing;
10:48
but here, since the thing brings benefit, 'let no man glory.'
10:49
And he uses gentler language.
10:50
'Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours, and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's.'
10:51
For since he had rebuked them severely, he again recovers them.
10:52
在上文他曾說:「我們是與神同工的」,並且也藉著許多別的話安慰了他們;
And above he said, 'We are fellow-workers with God,' and by many other means also he comforted them;
10:53
在這裡他也說:「全是你們的」,藉此挫敗那些教師的驕傲,指明他們不但沒有給門徒什麼恩惠,反倒這些教師應當為那些門徒的緣故心存感激;
and here too he says, 'All are yours,' pulling down the arrogance of the teachers, and showing that not only do they confer nothing on them, but that these very teachers ought rather to be thankful to those others;
10:54
for it was for their sake that they became such as they are, and moreover they received grace.
10:55
But since these also were likely to boast, on this account he cut off beforehand this malady too, saying:
10:56
in order that neither those may be high-minded as though bestowing something great, nor these, because of hearing that 'All are yours,' be again lifted up.
10:57
For even if it be for your sakes, yet the whole hath been done by God.
10:58
But consider with me how unto the end he continues to place his own name and Peter's underneath.
10:59
And what means, 'Or death'? That even though they die, it is for your sakes they die, running risks on behalf of your salvation.
10:60
Seest thou how again he brought down the disciples' pride, but exalted the teachers? For he discourses with them as with well-born children who have tutors and are about to inherit all things.
10:61
It is possible also to say it in another way: that even the death of Adam was for our sakes,
10:62
that we might be brought to soberness, and the death of Christ, that we might be saved.
10:63
'And ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's.'
10:64
In one manner are we Christ's, and in another manner is Christ God's, and in yet another manner is the world ours.
10:65
因為我們屬基督,是作為祂的工作;
For we are Christ's as His work;
10:66
but Christ is God's as a genuine offspring, not as a work, even as neither is the world ours in that manner.
10:67
So that although the expression is one, yet the meaning is different.
10:68
因為世界屬我們,乃是因它是為我們的緣故而被造的;
For the world is ours, as having been made for our sakes;
10:69
而基督屬神,乃是因神照著父的身分而作祂存在的根源;
but Christ is God's, as having Him for His cause according to His being the Father;
10:70
and we are Christ's, as having been fashioned by Him.
10:71
But if those, he says, are yours, why have ye done the contrary, being called by their names, and not by that of Christ and of God? 'So let a man account of us, as of ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.'
10:72
Since he had brought down their pride, mark how again he recovers it, saying:
10:73
Do not therefore, forsaking the Master, name yourselves after the ministers and those who serve.
10:74
And he said 'stewards,' showing that these things ought not to be given to all, but to whom it is meet, and to those to whom it is fitting to dispense them.
10:75
And the thing further sought in stewards is, that a man be found faithful.
10:76
That is, that he appropriate not to himself what belongs to the Master, that he vindicate not the things to himself as a master, but administer them as a steward.
10:77
因為管家的本分,乃是好好管理所交託給他的事物;
For it is a steward's part to administer well the things committed to his charge;
10:78
not to say that the Master's things are his own, but on the contrary, that his own belong to the Master.
10:79
Let each one consider these things, both he that hath the word and he that hath money
10:80
in his possession—namely, that he was entrusted with the Master's goods, and they are not his own; let him not keep them to himself, nor reckon them as his own, but let him ascribe them to God who gave all things.
10:81
Wilt thou see faithful stewards? Hear what Peter says:
10:82
'Why fasten ye your eyes on us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him to walk?' And to Cornelius also he said:
10:83
'We also are men of like passions with you.'
10:84
'Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.'
10:85
And Paul too, having said that 'I laboured more abundantly than they all,' added:
10:86
'Yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.'
10:87
And in another place also, addressing the same persons, he said:
10:88
「你有什麼不是領受的呢?」因為你一無所有是屬於自己的——無論是錢財、話語,還是那生命本身;
'For what hast thou that thou didst not receive?' For thou hast nothing of thine own—neither money, nor word, nor the very soul;
10:89
for this also belongs to the Master.
10:90
When therefore need calls, lay down this also.
10:91
But if thou art a lover of life, and when bidden to lay it down thou resistest, thou art no longer a faithful steward.
10:92
And how is it possible to withstand God when He calls? This very thing I also affirm, and for this cause I most of all marvel at the loving-kindness of God, that the things which He is able to receive from thee even against thy will, these He is not willing should be brought in unwillingly, that thou too mayest have a reward.
10:93
For instance, He is able to take thy soul against thy will, but He desires it from thee willingly, that thou mayest say with Paul:
10:94
He is able to take thy glory against thy will and to make thee lowly, but He wishes it from thee willingly, that thou mayest have a recompense.
10:95
He is able to make thee poor even against thy will, but He desires thee to become such willingly, that He may weave crowns for thee.
10:96
你看見神的仁慈了嗎?你看見我們的怠惰了嗎?你曾得著崇高的尊位,也曾一度握有教會的職分嗎?不要自高;
Sawest thou the loving-kindness of God? sawest thou our sluggishness? Hast thou attained to great dignity, and hast thou at some time laid hold of ecclesiastical office? Be not high-minded;
10:97
it was not thou that acquired the glory, but God that clothed thee with it.
10:98
Spare it therefore as a thing belonging to another, neither abusing it, nor misusing it for things unbecoming, nor being puffed up, nor appropriating it, but account thyself to be poor and inglorious.
10:99
For if thou wert entrusted to keep a royal purple, thou oughtest not to abuse the robe and mar it, but to guard it with the more exactness for Him that gave it.
10:100
你領受了話語的恩賜嗎?不可自誇,也不可誇口;
Hast thou received the gift of the word? Be not puffed up, neither boast;
10:101
for the gift is not thine own.
10:102
Be not ungrateful concerning the Master's goods, but distribute them to thy fellow-servants, and neither be lifted up over them as over things of thine own, nor be sparing to distribute them.
10:103
你若有兒女,他們也是屬神的;
And if thou hast children, they are God's;
10:104
你若如此思想,在得著他們時就會感恩,在被奪去他們時也不至憂傷;
if thou thus account, both in having them thou wilt give thanks, and in being deprived of them thou wilt not grieve;
10:105
'The Lord gave, the Lord hath taken away.'
10:106
因為我們一切所有的,都是從基督而來的;
For all things we have from Christ;
10:107
連我們的存在也是藉著祂而有的,還有生命、氣息、光、空氣和大地;
and our very being we have through Him, and life and breath, and light and air and earth;
10:108
祂若隔絕了這些中的任何一樣,我們就滅亡敗壞了;
and if He shut off any one of these, we are lost and undone;
10:109
for we are sojourners and pilgrims.
10:110
至於這「我的」和「你的」,不過是空洞的言語罷了;
But this 'mine' and 'thine' are mere bare words only;
10:111
in the realm of realities it hath no standing.
10:112
For even if you call the house your own, it is a word empty of any reality.
10:113
For the air, the earth, and the very material belong to the Creator; and even you yourself, who built it, and all other things besides.
10:114
And even if the use of it is yours, yet this too is uncertain, not only because of death, but even before death, on account of the instability of human affairs.
10:115
Continually writing these things upon our own hearts, then, let us practise this wisdom, and we shall gain two very great benefits:
10:116
for we shall be thankful both when we possess and when we are deprived, and we shall never become slaves to things that pass away and that are not our own.
10:117
因為即使祂取去你的錢財,祂所取的乃是祂自己的;無論是尊榮、是榮耀、是身體、甚至是那靈魂本身;
For even if he takes away your money, he has taken what is his own; even if honour, even if glory, even if the body, even if the very soul;
10:118
and even if he takes your son, he has not taken your son, but his own servant.
10:119
因為並不是你塑造了他,乃是那一位造了他;
For it was not you who fashioned him, but He who made him;
10:120
you did but minister to his passage into being, while He wrought the whole.
10:121
Let us give thanks, therefore, that we were counted worthy to minister to the work.
10:122
But what then? You wished to have it for ever? This again is the mark of an ungrateful man, and of one who does not know that he possessed what was another's, and not his own.
10:123
As, therefore, those who give it up readily know that they do not possess what is their own, so those who grieve claim as their own what belongs to the King.
10:124
For if we are not our own, how can those things be ours? For in a twofold manner we are His, both by the principle of creation and by that of faith.
10:125
'My substance is with Thee;'
10:126
and Paul too says that 'in Him we live and move and have our being.'
10:127
And exercising the argument concerning faith, he says:
10:128
'You are not your own, and you were bought with a price.'
10:129
When, therefore, He calls and wishes to take, let us not, like ungrateful household servants, confound the account, nor purloin our Master's goods.
10:130
Your soul is not your own; and how then is your money your own? How, then, do you spend on things utterly needless what is not yours? Do you not know that for this very reason we shall be called to account, having used them ill? But since they are not ours, but the Master's, we ought to have spent them upon our fellow-servants.
10:131
For this very thing that rich man too was called to account, that he did it not; and so were those who fed not the Lord.
10:132
Do not say, then, 'I am spending what is my own, and living luxuriously on what is mine.'
10:133
這並不是出於你自己的,乃是出於別人的;
It is not from what is your own, but from what belongs to others;
10:134
我說是「別人的」,因為你自己甘願如此;
and I say 'belonging to others' because you yourself will have it so;
10:135
since God wills that those things entrusted to you on behalf of the brethren should be yours.
10:136
然而別人的東西反倒成為你的,若你把它們花費在別人身上;
But things that belong to others become yours, if you spend them upon others;
10:137
whereas, if you spend them lavishly upon yourself alone, then what was yours has become another's.
10:138
For since you have used them cruelly, and say, 'It is just that my goods be spent for my own enjoyment alone,' for this reason I call them another's.
10:139
For they are common to you and to your fellow-servant, just as the sun is common, and the air, and the earth, and all else besides.
10:140
正如在身體的事上,那服事的功用既屬於全身,也屬於每一個肢體;
And just as in the case of the body, the service belongs both to the whole body and to each single member;
10:141
然而當它只歸給某一個肢體時,它就連自己本有的功用也失去了;
but when it comes to belong to one member only, it loses even its own proper function;
10:142
so also does it fall out in the matter of money.
10:143
And that what I say may become clearer: the food of the body, which is given in common to the members, if it come to be in one member, becomes henceforth alien even to that one.
10:144
For when it cannot be digested nor give nourishment, it has become alien even to that member.
10:145
But if it be made common, then it is the proper possession both of that member and of all.
10:146
So also in the matter of money: if you alone enjoy it, you also have destroyed it.
10:147
For you will not reap the reward of it; but if you possess it together with the rest, then it will the more be yours, and then you will reap the benefit.
10:148
你豈不見兩手服事、口咀嚼、肚腹接受麼?肚腹豈說:「既然我接受了,我就當獨自留住這一切」麼?所以,你在錢財的事上也不要這樣說;
Do you not see that the hands minister, and the mouth chews, and the belly receives? Does the belly say, 'Since I have received it, I ought to keep the whole'? Do not you, then, say this either in the matter of money;
10:149
for it belongs to him who receives to impart to others.
10:150
正如肚腹留住食物而不分佈,乃是肚腹的惡病;
As, therefore, it is a vice of the belly to retain the food and not distribute it;
10:151
因為它使全身受害;
for it works harm to the whole body;
10:152
照樣,富人把自己所有的據為己有,也是富人的惡病;
so it is a vice of the rich to keep to themselves what they have;
10:153
for this destroys both themselves and others.
10:154
再者,眼睛接受了全部的光;
The eye, again, receives all the light;
10:155
but it does not keep this to itself alone, but illumines the whole body.
10:156
For it is not in its nature to keep it to itself, so long as it is an eye.
10:157
再者,鼻孔覺察到香氣;
The nostrils, again, perceive the fragrance;
10:158
but they do not keep it to themselves alone, but transmit it to the brain, and set the stomach in a state of fragrance, and through themselves refresh the whole man.
10:159
唯有雙腳行走;
The feet alone walk;
10:160
but they do not merely transport themselves, but also carry the whole body along with them.
10:161
So do you also: whatever be entrusted to you, do not keep it to yourself alone, since you work harm to the whole, and to yourself before all others.
10:162
And one may see this coming to pass not in the case of the members only.
10:163
For the smith too, if he were minded to impart his craft to no one, would overthrow both himself and the other crafts.
10:164
The shoemaker likewise, the husbandman, the baker, and each of those who follow a necessary occupation, if he were minded not to impart to another aught of his craft, would ruin along with the others himself also as much as the others.
10:165
我又何必單提富人呢?因為即使是窮人,他們若效法你們這些貪婪富足之人的惡行,也必大大損害你們,並且必迅速使你們變窮──不,甚至要毀了你們──若在你們有需要之時,他們不肯把自己所有的分給你們;
And why do I speak of the rich? For even the poor, if they went about the same vice as you who are covetous and rich, would greatly injure you, and would quickly make you poor—nay rather, would even destroy you—if they were unwilling to impart their own to you when you were in need;
10:166
for instance, the labourer his work from his hands, the sailor his trading from the sea, the soldier his valour from wars.
10:167
So that, if for no other reason, at least respect this, and imitate their kindliness.
10:168
你不肯把你的財富分給任何人麼?那麼你也不要從別人領受甚麼;
You impart your wealth to no one? Then neither receive anything from another;
10:169
but if this should come to pass, all things will be overthrown.
10:170
For everywhere the giving and receiving is the beginning of many good things—in the case of seeds, of disciples, of crafts.
10:171
For if any one should be minded to keep the craft to himself, he has overthrown both himself and all of life.
10:172
農夫若把種子埋藏並存留在家中,就必招致慘重的飢荒;
And if the husbandman should bury the seeds and keep them at home, he will bring about a grievous famine;
10:173
so also the rich man, if he do this in the matter of money, will destroy himself before the poor, heaping up the flame of gehenna, more grievous, upon his own head.
10:174
所以,正如教師即使有許多門徒,仍把手藝傳授給每一個人;
As, therefore, teachers, even if they have many disciples, impart the craft to each one;
10:175
你也當如此,使許多人因你得著好處;
so do you also gain many who are benefited by you;
10:176
並讓眾人都說:某人救了他脫離貧窮,某人救了他脫離危難;
and let all say that such a one delivered from poverty, and such a one from dangers;
10:177
and, 'Such a one would have perished, if, after the grace of God, he had not enjoyed your protection;'
10:178
and that you loosed such a one from sickness, delivered another from false accusation, gathered in another who was a stranger, clothed another who was naked.
10:179
Better than boundless wealth and many treasures are these words; they turn all men towards you more than golden garments and horses and slaves.
10:180
因為那些東西使人顯得沉重討厭,被人如同公敵一般恨惡;
For those things make a man appear even burdensome, and to be hated as a common enemy;
10:181
but these proclaim him aloud as a common father and benefactor.
10:182
And what is greatest of all, the good will that comes from God accompanies you everywhere in your dealings.
10:183
那麼,讓這人說:「他幫助我把女兒嫁了出去」;
Let this man, then, say, 'He helped give my daughter in marriage';
10:184
另一人說:「他使我的兒子得以在眾人中嶄露頭角」;
another, 'He made it possible for my son to appear among men';
10:185
又一人說:「他解除了我的災禍」;
and another, 'He undid my misfortune';
10:186
and yet another, 'He delivered me from dangers.'
10:187
這些話語勝過金冠冕:就是在城中擁有無數的傳報者,宣揚自己對人的仁愛;
These words are better than crowns of gold: to have countless heralds in the city proclaiming one's own kindness to mankind;
10:188
these voices are far more pleasant and sweeter than the voice of the heralds who march before the rulers—to be called saviour, benefactor, protector, to bear the names that belong to God, and not to be called grasping, arrogant, insatiable, and petty.
10:189
Let us not, I beseech you, desire any of these latter words, but their opposites.
10:190
For if these things, when spoken upon earth, make a man so illustrious and renowned, then when they are written in heaven, and God proclaims them on the day that is to come, consider how great a splendour you will enjoy, how great a brightness.
10:191
May it be granted to us all to attain to it, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
