And the eye cannot say unto the hand, 'I have no need of you;'
31:2
nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you.'
31:3
使徒既壓制了較小肢體的嫉妒,除去了他們大概會有的沮喪——就是因別人蒙賜更大恩賜而生的沮喪——接著又貶抑那些領受了更大恩賜之人的驕氣;
Having repressed the envy of the lesser members, and removed the despondency which it was likely they had, from others being deemed worthy of greater gifts, he next abases also the pride of those who had received the greater gifts;
31:4
他在對那些人說話時其實也已這樣行了(因為說這是恩賜,而非自身的功勞,這正表明了這一點);
doing this indeed even in what he said to those others (for to say that it is a gift, and not an achievement, this was the mark of one making that plain);
31:5
but now he does it yet more vehemently, still keeping to the same image.
31:6
因為此後他就從身體,並從那由此而來的合一,過渡到肢體本身的比較;
For from the body, henceforth, and from the unity that thence proceeds, he passes on to the very comparison of the members;
31:7
which was the very thing those persons most sought to learn.
31:8
Since it was not so much sufficient to comfort them that all are one body, as to learn that even in those very things which they had they were in no great degree the losers.
31:9
And the eye cannot say unto the hand, 'I have no need of you;'
31:10
nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you.'
31:11
因為那恩賜縱然較小,卻仍是必需的;
For even if the gift be less, yet it is necessary;
31:12
and just as, that member not existing, many things are hindered, so also without this the fullness of the Church is lamed.
31:13
And he said not, 'It will not say,' but that, 'It cannot say.'
31:14
So that even if it should wish, even if it should say so, it is not admissible, nor does the matter have such a nature.
31:15
For this reason, taking each of the two extremes, in these he exercises his argument: first upon the hand and the eye, secondly upon the head and the feet, heightening the illustration.
31:16
For what is meaner than the foot, or what more honorable and more necessary than the head? For this, the head, is most especially the man.
31:17
然而它畢竟不能自足,也不能獨自成就萬事;
Yet nevertheless it is not self-sufficient, nor could it accomplish all things by itself;
31:18
since if this were so, the feet would have been added to us superfluously.
31:19
他並不止於此,反而又尋求另一個更進一層的論點;
And he did not stop even at this, but seeks yet another point beyond;
31:20
which he always does, not contending merely to the point of equality, but advancing even further.
31:21
不但如此,身上那些看似更軟弱的肢體,反而是不可缺少的;
Nay, much rather those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary;
31:22
身上那些我們看為比較不體面的,我們反倒加上更豐厚的體面;
and those which we think to be less honorable of the body, upon these we bestow more abundant honor;
31:23
我們那不俊美的肢體,反得著更豐足的俊美;
and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness;
31:24
everywhere placing the addition on the side of the body, and thereby both comforting the one and repressing the other.
31:25
For I do not say this, he means, that the greater have need merely of the lesser, but that they have much need.
31:26
For if anything in us is weak, if anything is without honor, this both is necessary and enjoys the greater honor.
31:27
And well did he say, 'those that seem,' and 'those which we think,' showing that the verdict is not from the nature of the things, but from the surmise of the multitude.
31:28
因為我們身上沒有一樣是不體面的;
For nothing in us is without honor;
31:29
for what of the generative members among us seems more without honor?
31:30
然而它畢竟得享更大的體面;
And yet nonetheless it enjoys greater honor;
31:31
and those who are exceedingly poor, even if they have the rest of the body naked, would never endure to show those members bare.
31:32
And yet this is not the rank of things without honor; rather, they ought to be despised more than the others.
31:33
For indeed in a household the dishonored servant not only enjoys no greater attendance, but is not even deemed worthy of the same.
31:34
所以,這肢體若也是不體面的,就不但不該得著更多的照顧,甚至連同樣的照顧也不該得;
So that if this member too were without honor, it ought not only not to enjoy greater care, but not even the same;
31:35
but as it is, it enjoys greater honor, and this the wisdom of God has wrought.
31:36
因為對某些肢體,祂在其本性裡賜下無所匱乏;
For to some members He gave, in their nature, that they should have no need;
31:37
but to others, since He gave it not in their nature, He constrained us to supply it.
31:38
就連走獸也在其本性裡有那無所匱乏的,牠們大多既不需衣裳,也不需鞋履,也不需屋頂;
since even the beasts have in their nature that which is self-sufficient, and most of them need neither garments, nor shoes, nor roof;
31:39
yet not for this reason is our body more without honor than theirs, because it has need of all these things.
31:40
因為人若細細察究,就連在其本性裡,這些肢體也是既尊貴又不可缺少的;
For indeed if one should examine accurately, even in their very nature these members are both honorable and necessary;
31:41
which very thing he too hinted at, adjudging it to them not from our care and from their enjoying greater honor, but also from the nature of the things themselves.
31:42
所以,當他論到軟弱的和不體面的時,他說「看似如此的」;
Wherefore, when he speaks of the weak and the without honor, he says, 'those that seem;'
31:43
但當他論到不可缺少的時,就不再加上「看似如此的」,乃是他自己斷言說它們是不可缺少的;
but when he speaks of the necessary, he no longer adds 'those that seem,' but himself declares, saying that they are necessary;
31:44
for indeed they are useful both for the begetting of children and for the succession of our race.
31:45
For this reason the lawgivers of the Romans also punish those who mutilate these members and make eunuchs, inasmuch as they injure the common race and do outrage to nature itself.
31:46
But away with the licentious, who slander the works of God's creation!
31:47
正如許多人因醉酒的人就咒詛酒,因行淫的婦人就咒詛女人的本性;
For just as many have cursed wine on account of the drunken, and the nature of women on account of the adulteresses;
31:48
so also they have deemed these members to be shameful, on account of those who use them not as they ought.
31:49
For sin is not allotted to the nature of the thing, but is born from the deliberate choice of him who dares the transgression.
31:50
然而有些人認為,保羅論到那較軟弱、較不體面、卻不可缺少、又得享更大體面的肢體,乃是指眼和腳而言;他稱眼為較軟弱卻不可缺少的,因為眼雖在能力上有所不足,卻在功用上佔了優勢,而稱腳為較不體面的;
But some think that what is said by Paul concerning the weaker and less honorable and necessary members, and those enjoying greater honor, is spoken of the eyes and the feet; and that he calls the eyes both weaker and necessary, because, though inferior in power, they have the advantage in usefulness, and the feet the less honorable;
31:51
for indeed these too enjoy much provident care.
31:52
Then, lest again he should produce some other excess, he says:
31:53
But our comely parts have no need.
31:54
For lest anyone should say, 'And what sort of reasoning is this—to despise the honorable, and to attend upon the less honorable?' it is not out of contempt that we do this, he says, but because they themselves have no need.
31:55
And see how great a commendation he inserted in brief, and passed on, doing this profitably and usefully.
31:56
And he is not even content with this, but adds also the cause, saying:
31:57
But God has tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to the part that lacked, that there might be no schism in the body.
31:58
既然祂將它們調和在一起,就不容那較不體面的顯出它本相;
And if He tempered them together, He did not suffer the less honorable to appear as such;
31:59
因為凡被調和的就成為一體,在此之先它原是甚麼樣,已不再顯明了;
for that which is blended becomes one, and it does not appear what it was before this;
31:60
since otherwise we could not even say that it had been blended at all.
31:61
And observe how he continually passes lightly over the defects, saying, 'to the part that lacked.'
31:62
He did not say 'to the dishonorable' or 'to the unseemly,' but 'to the part that lacked.'
31:63
'Lacking' — in what way? According to nature.
31:64
And to what end? That there might be no schism in the body.
31:65
因為他們雖享有無數的安慰,卻仍因自覺領受了較次的分而憂傷,故此他指明他們其實是更被尊重的;
For since, though enjoying countless consolations, they nevertheless grieved as having received the lesser part, he shows that they were in fact the more honored;
31:66
for 'to the part that lacked,' he says, 'He gave more abundant honor.'
31:67
Then he adds the reason as well, showing that it was to their profit that He both made it to lack and honored it the more greatly.
31:68
And what is the reason? 'That there might be no schism,' he says, 'in the body.'
31:69
And he did not say 'in the members,' but 'in the body.'
31:70
因為若有些肢體既蒙本性、又蒙我們自己的照顧,而另有些肢體卻毫無來處的看顧,那就要有極大的不均了;
For there would have been great inequality, if some parts were cared for both by nature and by our own forethought, while others were cared for from no quarter at all;
31:71
它們就要彼此撕裂,因為擔當不起那聯結的束帶;
and they would have been torn away from one another, being unable to bear the bond of union;
31:72
and once these were torn away, harm would have come to the rest as well.
31:73
Have you seen how he showed that greater honor was necessarily given to the part that lacked? For if this had not been done, the ruin would have been common to all.
31:74
因為這些肢體即或未曾蒙你多加看顧,也要因缺少本性的幫助而受損害;
For even if these had not enjoyed much forethought from you, they would have been injured, not having the help that comes from nature;
31:75
既受損害,就要滅亡;
and being injured, they would have perished;
31:76
既滅亡,就要撕裂身體;
and having perished, they would have rent the body;
31:77
and the body being rent, the rest would have perished too, even those far greater than these.
31:78
Do you see that the care of these is bound up with the forethought bestowed on those greater ones? For they do not so possess their being in their own nature as they possess it in being one in the body.
31:79
因此,身體若滅亡了,各個肢體本身的健全於它們毫無益處;
For this reason, if the body perishes, the health of each individual part profits them nothing;
31:80
無論眼睛存留,或是鼻子保守著自己的功用,那聯結的束帶一旦解散,此後就再沒有甚麼益處了;
but whether the eye abides, or the nose preserving its own function, once the bond is dissolved there will thenceforth be no benefit at all;
31:81
whereas if, this remaining, those parts are injured, they are both borne up and quickly return to health.
31:82
In the case of the body this has its reason, that the part which lacks received more abundant honor; but in the case of men how could this appear? Nay, it is in the case of men especially that you would see this coming to pass.
31:83
因為那些約在酉初被雇的人,先領了工錢;
For those hired about the eleventh hour received their wage first;
31:84
那走迷的羊使牧人撇下九十九隻,去尋找牠,尋見了就把牠扛在肩上,並非驅趕牠;
and the sheep that had wandered persuaded the shepherd to leave the ninety and nine, and to run after it, and being found it was carried, not driven;
31:85
浪子也得著比那素有好名聲之人更大的尊榮;
and the prodigal son enjoyed greater honor than he that had been well approved;
31:86
and the thief was crowned and proclaimed before the apostles.
31:87
And in the matter of the talents also you would see this happening.
31:88
For both he that received the five talents and he that received the two were counted worthy of the same things, and by the very fact of receiving the two he enjoyed the more of forethought.
31:89
因為若把五千交託給他,他既不能經營,就要連全部都失去了;
For if the five had been entrusted to him, being unable to manage them, he would have fallen away from the whole;
31:90
but having received the two, and having supplied from his own effort the full return, he was counted worthy of the same things as he who had worked with the five, having the advantage in this — that he obtained the same crowns from lesser labors.
31:91
然而他也是人,正如那領五千的人一樣;
And yet he too was a man, just as he that had the five;
31:92
但主人卻絲毫不與他斤斤計較,也不強他行與同伴僕人同樣的事,也不說:「你為何不能經營那五千?」——祂原可正當地這樣說;
but nevertheless the Master reckons nothing strictly against him, nor compels him to do the same things as his fellow-servant, nor says, 'Why can you not work the five?' — though He might justly have said it;
31:93
but He crowned him also.
31:94
你們既知道這些事,作為較大的,就不可踐踏那些較小的,免得你們在傷害他們之先,先傷了自己;
Knowing these things, then, do not you that are greater trample upon those that are less, lest you injure yourselves before them;
31:95
for when they are torn away, the whole body is corrupted.
31:96
For what else is a body, than the being of many members? As he himself also says, that 'The body is not one member, but many.'
31:97
若這樣就是身體,我們就當留意,使那許多的仍存留為許多;
If then this is a body, let us take care that the many remain many;
31:98
for unless this is preserved, the blow falls upon the vital parts.
31:99
Wherefore he himself also requires not this only, that we be not torn away from one another, but that we be very closely joined together.
31:100
Accordingly, having said, 'That there might be no schism in the body,' he was not content with this, but added,
31:101
'That the members might have the same care one for another;'
31:102
adding this also as another reason why the lesser parts enjoy the more of honor.
31:103
For not merely that they might not be torn from one another did God so order it, but that there might be much love also and concord.
31:104
因為若各人的存在都繫於鄰舍的得救,就不要向我論甚麼較少和較多;
For if the very being of each lies in the salvation of his neighbor, do not talk to me of the less and the more;
31:105
for here there is no more and less.
31:106
因為身體存留的時候,那分別還可以看得出來;
For while the body remains, it is possible even to discern the difference;
31:107
but it will perish, unless the lesser parts also remain.
31:108
If then the great parts also will perish when the small are torn off, they ought in like manner to care for the small, and that as for themselves, seeing that in the salvation of these the greater parts also abide.
31:109
So that though you say ten thousand times over that the member is dishonorable and inferior, yet if you do not care for it in like manner as for yourself, but neglect it as inferior, the harm will pass over upon you.
31:110
For this reason he did not say, 'That the members might merely care one for another,' but he added, 'That they might have the SAME care one for another;' that is, that the small might enjoy the like and the same forethought as the great.
31:111
所以你不要說:「這人不過是個無足輕重的人」,倒要想到他乃是那維繫全體之身體的一個肢體;
Say not, then, 'This man is a mere nobody,' but consider that he is a member of that body which holds the whole together;
31:112
and just as the eye does, so also does he make the body to be a body.
31:113
For wherever the body is being built up, no one has anything more than his neighbor; for neither does this make a body — that one part be greater and another less — but that they be many and diverse.
31:114
You, since you are greater, have constituted the body; so also does he, since he is less.
31:115
So that his inferiority, when the body must be built up, becomes of equal honor with you toward this good contribution;
31:116
不要有較小和較大的肢體,也不要有尊貴和較卑賤的,倒要一切都作眼睛,或一切都作頭;
Let there be no member less and greater, nor honorable and less honorable, but let all be an eye, or all a head;
31:117
will not the body perish? It is surely plain to everyone.
31:118
反過來,若一切都是較小的,也要照樣有同一結果;
Again, if all be lesser, the same thing will result;
31:119
so that in this way too the lesser parts are made equal.
31:120
但若還要多說一句,為叫它得以存為身體,那較小的仍是較小的;
But if one must say something further, in order that it may remain a body, the lesser is lesser;
31:121
so that it is for your sake that he is lesser, that you may remain being great.
31:122
因此,祂也向眾肢體要求同樣的看顧;
For this reason also He requires the same forethought from all;
31:123
and having said, 'That the members might have the same care one for another,' he interprets this same thing again, saying:
31:124
'And whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it;'
31:125
'or whether one member is glorified, all the members rejoice with it.'
31:126
For this reason, he says, He also made the forethought common, having fashioned unity amid so great a diversity, that there might be much fellowship also in the outcomes.
31:127
For if care for one's neighbor is a common salvation, then of necessity both the glory and the dejection must also be common.
31:128
Three things, therefore, He requires here:
31:129
that there be no division, but rather a careful and exact union; that we provide for one another alike; and that we regard what befalls each as common to all.
31:130
And higher up he says that God gave more abundant honor to the member that lacked, because of its need, showing that the very fact of being inferior became the occasion of greater honor;
31:131
but here he also equalizes them according to the principle of mutual care exercised by one for another.
31:132
For on this account, he says, He caused it to enjoy greater honor, that it might not enjoy less care.
31:133
And not from this alone, but also from the pleasant and painful things that befall them, the members are bound together with one another.
31:134
For indeed, when a thorn is often driven into the heel, the whole body is aware of it and is concerned: the back bends, the belly and the thighs contract, and the hands, going forward like guards and attendants, draw out what is embedded; the head stoops down, and the eyes look on with much anxious care.
31:135
So that even if the foot has the disadvantage of not being able to come up, yet by bringing the head down it obtains equality and enjoys the same honor—and especially when the feet bring the head down not as a favor but as a debt owed.
31:136
So that, if the head has the advantage of being more honorable, yet in that, even being such, it owes honor and solicitude to the inferior, and in that it likewise suffers together in the same way, it displays great equality.
31:137
For what is meaner than the heel? And what more honorable than the head? Yet the head goes to that member and moves everything together with itself.
31:138
再者,若眼睛受了甚麼苦,全身都疼痛,一切都停頓下來:腳不行走,手不作工,肚腹也不享用素常所享用的;
Again, if the eyes suffer anything, all the members are in pain, and all are idle: neither do the feet walk, nor the hands work, nor does the belly enjoy its accustomed things;
31:139
and yet the suffering belongs to the eyes.
31:140
Why do you waste away the belly? Why do you hold back the feet? Why do you bind the hands? Because it is bound together with them, and the whole body suffers unspeakably.
31:141
For if it did not suffer together, it would not have consented to share in the care.
31:142
Wherefore, having said, 'That the members should have the same care one for another,' he added:
31:143
「若一個肢體受苦,所有的肢體就一同受苦;
'Whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it;
31:144
or one member is glorified, all the members rejoice with it.'
31:145
有人問說,牠怎樣一同快樂呢?頭被戴上冠冕,全人就得了榮耀;
And how does it rejoice with it? one may ask. The head is crowned, and the whole man is glorified;
31:146
口說話,眼睛就歡笑喜悅;
the mouth speaks, and the eyes laugh and are gladdened;
31:147
and yet the good esteem belongs not to the beauty of the eyes, but to the tongue.
31:148
再者,當眼睛顯為美麗時,全身的婦人都得了妝飾;
Again, when the eyes appear beautiful, the whole woman is adorned;
31:149
and just as these do, so also when a straight nose and an upright neck and other members are praised, they are glad and become cheerful; and again they weep with much abundance in their pains and misfortunes, even though they themselves remain unharmed.
31:150
所以,我們既思想這一切,就當效法這些肢體的愛,不可行相反的事,就是踐踏鄰舍的禍患,並嫉妒鄰舍的好處;
Considering, then, all these things, let us imitate the love of these members, and let us not do the contrary—trampling upon our neighbor's misfortunes and envying our neighbor's good things;
31:151
for this belongs to the mad and those out of their senses.
31:152
因為那挖出自己眼睛的人,顯出了瘋狂至極的憑據;
For indeed, the man who gouges out his own eye brings forth a very great proof of insanity;
31:153
那咬食自己手的人,也提供了明顯狂亂的證據;
and the man who devours his own hand furnishes evidence of manifest madness;
31:154
and this same thing, done likewise upon the brethren as upon the members, fastens on one the reputation of insanity and brings no ordinary harm.
31:155
因為只要那人發光,你自己的俊美也就顯出,全身都得了妝飾;
For as long as that man shines, your own comeliness also appears, and the whole body is adorned;
31:156
因為他並不把美麗單留給自己,也使你得以引以為榮;
for he does not confine his beauty to himself alone, but gives you also to take pride in it;
31:157
但你若把他熄滅,你就使黑暗臨到全身、成為眾人共有的,並把災禍加給一切肢體;
but if you extinguish him, you have wrought darkness common to the whole body, and you have brought the calamity upon all the members;
31:158
just as, on the contrary, if you keep him shining, you preserve the bloom for the whole body entire.
31:159
因為沒有人說「這眼睛美」,乃是說甚麼呢?說「某某人美」;
For no one says, 'The eye is beautiful,' but what? 'So-and-so is beautiful';
31:160
and if the eye itself is praised, it is praised after the common commendation.
31:161
在教會中也是如此發生的;
So it happens also in the Church;
31:162
for if there are some who are held in good esteem, the whole reaps the good repute.
31:163
For our enemies do not divide the praises, but join them together.
31:164
And if anyone is brilliant in speaking, they do not praise him alone, but the whole Church as well.
31:165
因為他們不僅說「某某人可佩」,乃說甚麼呢?說「基督徒有一位可佩的教師」;
For they do not say only that 'So-and-so is admirable,' but what? 'The Christians have an admirable teacher';
31:166
and they make the possession common.
31:167
Then, while the Greeks join together, do you divide, and war against your own body, and set yourself against your own members? Do you not know that this overturns everything? For, He says, a kingdom divided against itself shall not stand.
31:168
And nothing so divides and separates as envy and malice—this grievous disease, deprived of all pardon, and in some respect worse than the root of evils.
31:169
因為貪財的人是在自己得著時纔喜樂;
For the covetous man rejoices when he himself receives;
31:170
但嫉妒的人卻是在別人得不著時纔喜樂,並非在自己得著時纔喜樂;
but the envious man rejoices when another does not receive, not when he himself receives;
31:171
因為他把別人的禍患看作自己的益處,而非把自己的亨通看作益處——他乃是一種公敵,四處與人的本性作對,擊打基督的肢體。有甚麼比他更瘋狂的呢?鬼魔固然嫉妒,卻是嫉妒人,並不嫉妒任何鬼魔;
for he counts the misfortune of others as his own benefit, not his own prosperity—a sort of common enemy going about against the nature of men, and smiting the members of Christ. What could be more frenzied than he? The demon indeed envies, but men, not any demon;
31:172
but you, being a man, envy men, and set yourself against your own kind and kindred, which not even the demon does.
31:173
當你看見弟兄亨通,你本當戴冠冕、歡喜、快樂,卻反倒戰兢、面色蒼白時,你要得著甚麼寬恕、甚麼申辯呢?但你若也願意存熱心,我並不禁止;
And what pardon will you obtain, what defense, when you look upon a brother prospering and tremble and turn pale, whereas you ought to be crowned and to rejoice and exult? But if you also wish to be zealous, I do not forbid it;
31:174
你要存熱心,卻要為叫你能成為像那受尊崇之人一樣;
be zealous, but so that you may become like him who is in good repute;
31:175
not that you may bring him down, but that you may attain to the same summit, that you may display the same virtue.
31:176
這纔是美好的熱心——就是效法而非爭戰,不為別人的好處憂傷,卻為自己的過惡刺痛;
This is a good zeal—to imitate and not to war, not to grieve at others' good things, but to be stung at one's own evils;
31:177
嫉妒所行的卻正與此相反;
of which envy does the very opposite;
31:178
for, neglecting his own evils, it pines away over the good things of others.
31:179
因為貧窮的人並不因自己的貧窮如此受刺痛,倒因鄰舍的富足受刺痛。有甚麼比這更悲慘的呢?因為正如我先前所說,這樣的人在這一點上甚至比貪財的還壞;
For indeed, the poor man is not so stung by his own poverty as by his neighbor's abundance. What could be more grievous than this? For in this respect, as I said before, such a man is even worse than the covetous;
31:180
因為那貪財的,每逢自己得著甚麼,就歡喜;
for the one, whenever he himself receives something, rejoices;
31:181
but the other is gladdened whenever another does not receive.
31:182
Wherefore I exhort you, forsaking this wicked way and turning to a good zeal (for such zeal is vehement and hotter than any fire), to reap from thence great goods.
31:183
Thus also Paul led those from among the Jews by the hand to the faith, saying:
31:184
'If by any means I may provoke to jealousy my own flesh, and may save some of them.'
31:185
For he who is zealous in this way, as that man desired, does not pine away when he sees another in good repute, but rather when he sees himself falling behind.
31:186
但嫉妒的人卻不是這樣;他倒是在看見別人順利時消瘦;
But the envious man is not so; rather, he pines when he sees another faring well;
31:187
and like some drone, he is one who ruins the labors of others, himself never being eager to rise up, but weeping whenever he sees another risen, and doing everything so as to cast him down.
31:188
To what, then, might one liken this passion? It seems to me to be like this: as if a sluggish ass, weighed down with much flesh, yoked together with a winged horse, were neither willing to rouse itself, nor to attempt to drag that horse down by the weight of its flesh.
31:189
因為這人也是如此,他毫不思想,也毫不切望自己怎樣能從這沉睡中得釋放;
For indeed this man too neither thinks nor is eager at all how he himself might be released from this deep sleep;
31:190
but he does everything so as to trip up and cast down the one flying toward heaven, becoming an exact emulator of the devil.
31:191
那魔鬼看見人在樂園中,並不切望改變自己,卻要把那人趕出樂園;
That one, seeing the man in paradise, was not eager to change himself, but to cast that man out of paradise;
31:192
and again, seeing him seated in heaven and the others hastening thither, he holds to the same pursuit, tripping up those who press on to that place, and thereby heaping up for himself a greater furnace.
31:193
因為這事處處發生;
For indeed this happens everywhere;
31:194
因為那受人嫉妒的,若儆醒,就變得更加顯赫;
for the man who is envied, if he is vigilant, becomes more illustrious;
31:195
but the man who is malicious gathers to himself more evils.
31:196
So it was also with Joseph: he became illustrious.
31:197
For the plotting of the envious made God Himself give sentence in his favour once and again, and caused the rod to bud forth.
31:198
Thus did Jacob enjoy great abundance, together with all his other blessings.
31:199
Thus did the envious impale themselves upon ten thousand evils.
31:200
Knowing all this, let us flee such jealousy.
31:201
For tell me, on what account are you envious? Because your brother received a spiritual gift of grace? And from whom did he receive it? Tell me.
31:202
Was it not from God? Then it is against Him, the Giver of the gift, that you take up your hostility.
31:203
You see whither the evil creeps, and what a crowning height of sins it brings on, and how deep a pit of punishment it digs? Let us therefore flee this passion, beloved, and neither let us envy, but rather let us pray earnestly even for those who envy us, and let us do all things so as to quench their passion.
31:204
But let us not suffer the same as fools do, who, in their wish to exact vengeance on them, do everything so as to kindle their flame the more.
31:205
But let us not be so; rather let us weep over them and lament them.
31:206
For it is they who are the wronged, having a worm perpetually gnawing through their heart, and gathering within themselves a fountain of venom more bitter than any gall.
31:207
Let us therefore beseech the God who loves mankind both to change their passion, and that we ourselves may never fall into the malady.
31:208
因為凡懷有這消蝕之病的人,天國對他乃是不能進入的;
For heaven is inaccessible to the man who has this wasting sickness within him;
31:209
and even before heaven, the present life itself is made unliveable.
31:210
For not so does the moth settling in wood and wool, and the worm, wont to eat through them, as the fever of envy devours the very bones of the envious, and ravages the soul's temperance.
31:211
所以,為要救自己也救別人脫離千萬的禍患,我們當把這比一切消蝕之病更難堪的邪惡熱病,從我們身上趕出去;
In order therefore that we may deliver both ourselves and others from ten thousand evils, let us drive away from us this wicked fever, which is more grievous than any wasting disease;
31:212
叫我們既得著屬靈的力量,就得以跑完當前的賽程,也得著那將來的冠冕;
that having taken up spiritual strength, we may both accomplish the present contest and attain the crowns that are to come;
31:213
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
