Do you not know that those who run in a race all run indeed, but one receives the prize? (Chapter 1)
23:2
Having shown that condescension is very useful, and that this is the highest perfection, and that he himself, having ascended above all the rest toward perfection—or rather, having even surpassed it by not taking what was his due—descended again more than all, and having made known to us the fitting occasions for each of these, both for perfection and for condescension, he now assails them more sharply, hinting that this practice of theirs, which seems to be a mark of perfection, is a certain superfluous and vain labor.
23:3
他並不如此直白地說出來,免得他們變得厚顏無恥;
And he does not state it thus plainly, lest they should grow shameless;
23:4
but by the means through which he builds up his argument, he makes it clear.
23:5
And having said that they sin against Christ, and destroy the brethren, and gain nothing from their perfect knowledge unless love be present, he again comes to a common example and says:
23:6
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run indeed, but one receives the prize? He says this, not as though here too only one out of all is destined to be saved—far from it—but as though we ought to bring in much diligence.
23:7
因為正如在那裡,雖有許多人下到競技場中,得冠冕的卻不多,這獎賞只歸與一人;單單下場參賽是不夠的,單單抹油摔跤也是不夠的;
For just as there, when many go down into the stadium, not many are crowned, but this comes round to one only, and it does not suffice merely to descend into the contest, nor to anoint oneself and wrestle;
23:8
照樣,在此處單單信了、隨隨便便地爭戰一番,也是不夠的;
so also here it does not suffice merely to have believed and to have contended in a haphazard way;
23:9
but unless we so run as to present ourselves uncaught unto the end and to draw near to the prize, there will be no gain for us either.
23:10
For even if you think yourself perfect, he says, in respect of knowledge, yet you have not yet laid hold of the whole; which is what he hinted at when he said:
23:11
So run, that you may obtain.
23:12
It follows then that they had not yet obtained.
23:13
And having spoken thus, he also teaches the manner:
23:14
And everyone who contends exercises self-control in all things.
23:15
What does 'in all things' mean? Not that he abstains from this, but transgresses in another; rather he masters gluttony, and lust, and drunkenness, and, in a word, all the passions.
23:16
For this, he says, happens even in the outward contests.
23:17
因為在競賽期間,參賽者不可醉酒,也不可行淫,免得耗損了力氣,甚至也不可從事任何別的事務;
For it is not permitted to those who contend to be drunken during the season of the contest, nor to commit fornication, lest they enfeeble their strength, nor even to be occupied with anything else;
23:18
but having once withdrawn themselves from all things, they attend to their exercises alone.
23:19
But if these things are so there, where the crown goes to but one, how much more here, where the honor is also greater.
23:20
For not one alone is crowned, and the rewards also far surpass the toils.
23:21
Wherefore also he sets it down in a way that shames them, saying:
23:22
他們不過是為要得那能壞的冠冕;
They indeed do it to receive a corruptible crown;
23:23
I therefore so run, as not uncertainly.
23:24
For having shamed them by means of the outward examples, he next brings himself also into the midst, which is the best manner of teaching.
23:25
Wherefore also he is seen doing this everywhere.
23:26
But what does 'not uncertainly' mean? Looking, he says, toward some goal, not at random and in vain, as you do.
23:27
For what more do you gain from entering into the idol-temples and displaying that supposed perfection of yours? Nothing.
23:28
但我卻不是這樣的人;反倒我所行的一切,都是為著鄰舍的救恩而行;
But I am not such a one; rather, all that I do, I do for the salvation of my neighbors;
23:29
我若顯出完全,是為著他們;
whether I display perfection, it is for their sake;
23:30
我若顯出屈就,也是為著他們;
whether condescension, it is for their sake;
23:31
我若藉著不接受供給而超過彼得,是為叫他們不至跌倒;
whether I surpass Peter by not accepting support, that they may not be offended;
23:32
whether I descend below all men, being circumcised and shaved, that they may not be tripped up.
23:33
But you—tell me—why do you eat in the idol-temples? Nay, you could not assign any reasonable cause.
23:34
因為食物不能叫你得神的喜悅;
For food does not commend you to God;
23:35
and neither if you eat are you the better, nor if you do not eat are you the worse.
23:36
Therefore you run in a haphazard and random way.
23:37
So I box, as not beating the air.
23:38
他再次暗示那「不隨意、不徒然」的意思,說了這話;
Again hinting at the 'not at random and in vain,' he says this;
23:39
因為我有一位所要擊打的,就是那魔鬼;
for I have one whom I strike, that is, the devil;
23:40
but you do not strike him; rather, you simply pour out your strength to no purpose.
23:41
For the time being, then, still bearing with them, he speaks thus.
23:42
For since he had dealt with them
23:43
more vehemently in what went before, he again restrains his rebuke, reserving the deep incision for the end of the discourse.
23:44
因為在此他只說他們是隨意徒然地行事;
For here he says only that they act at random and in vain;
23:45
but later he shows that it is even to the great destruction of their own head, and that, quite apart from the harm to the brethren, they themselves are not without guilt in daring these things.
23:46
But I buffet my body and bring it into bondage, lest by any means, having preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
23:47
在此他顯明他們也是被肚腹的情慾所轄制,任由它放縱不羈,並且假借完全之名,去滿足自己的貪食;
Here he shows that they too were held fast by the desire of the belly and gave loose rein to it, and under the pretext of perfection were satisfying their own gluttony;
23:48
which he had also been travailing to say from before, when he said:
23:49
Foods for the belly, and the belly for foods.
23:50
因為奢華放縱既生出淫亂,而這又生出拜偶像,所以他理所當然地在許多處攻擊這弊病;
For since luxury produces fornication, and this begot idolatry, he reasonably assails the malady in many places;
23:51
and showing how much he suffered for the sake of the gospel, he sets this down along with those things.
23:52
他說,正如我超越了那些命令——而且這對我並非輕省之事;
For just as, he says, I went beyond the commandments—and that though the matter was no light one for me;
23:53
for indeed, We endure all things, he says.
23:54
So too here I endure much toil, that I may live temperately.
23:55
For though desire is hard to bridle and the tyranny of the belly is strong, yet I curb it and do not surrender myself to the passion, but endure every toil so as not to be swept away.
23:56
For do not suppose that I accomplish these things without effort.
23:57
因為這乃是一場賽跑,一場搏鬥,是本性的暴虐,不斷起來反抗,想要放縱不羈;
For it is a race and a wrestling match and a tyranny of nature that continually rises up in revolt and desires to run loose;
23:58
but I do not give way; rather I hold it down and subdue it with much sweat.
23:59
他說這些話,是要叫人不因這事艱難,就對為著美德的爭戰灰心喪志;
He says these things so that no one may despair over the struggles on behalf of virtue, since the matter is laborious;
23:60
wherefore he says, 'I buffet my body and bring it into bondage.'
23:61
他沒有說「我毀滅它」,也沒有說「我懲罰它」;
He did not say, 'I destroy it,' nor, 'I punish it';
23:62
乃是說「我攻克它,叫它服我」——這是主人的作為,不是仇敵的作為;
but, 'I buffet it and bring it into bondage'—which is the act of a master, not of an enemy;
23:63
of a trainer, not of an adversary.
23:64
'Lest, having preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.'
23:65
But if Paul feared this—he who had taught so many, and feared it even after having preached, and after becoming a messenger, and after receiving the oversight of the whole world—what shall we say? For do not suppose, he says, that because you have believed, this suffices for your salvation.
23:66
For if to have preached, to have taught, to have brought countless souls to God does not suffice for my salvation, unless I also present my own conduct as irreproachable, much more is this the case with you.
23:67
然後他又轉到別的例證上;
Then he comes again to other examples;
23:68
and just as before he set forth the examples of the apostles, and those of common custom, and those of the priests, and his own,
23:69
so here too he sets forth those of the Olympic contests.
23:70
And having set down his own examples, he proceeds again to the histories of the Old Testament.
23:71
And since he is about to make his discourse more severe, he casts his exhortation in general terms, and discourses not only about the matters at hand but simply about all the maladies among the Corinthians.
23:72
在論及外邦的競賽時,他是這樣說的;
And in the case of the outward contests he spoke thus;
23:73
but here, 'I would not have you ignorant, brethren.'
23:74
This he said, showing that they had not been very well instructed in these matters.
23:75
And what is this which you do not wish us to be ignorant of? 'That all our fathers,' he says, 'were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;'
23:76
「並且都喫了一樣的靈食,也都喝了一樣的靈水(因為他們喝的是那隨著他們的靈磐石流出來的水;
'and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink (for they drank of a spiritual Rock that followed them;
23:77
ἡ δὲ πέ .
and the Rock was Christ)';
23:78
'but with most of them God was not well pleased.'
23:79
And for what reason, he asks, does he say these things? In order to show that, just as it profited those men nothing to have enjoyed so great a gift, so neither does it profit these to have received baptism and to have enjoyed spiritual mysteries, unless they are minded to display a life worthy of the grace.
23:80
Wherefore he brings forward both the types of baptism and those of the mysteries.
23:81
「受洗歸了摩西」是甚麼意思呢?正如我們信入基督並祂的復活而受洗,好與祂同享一樣的奧祕;
And what does it mean, 'they were baptized into Moses'? Just as we, having believed in Christ and in His resurrection, are baptized, so as to share in the same mysteries with Him;
23:82
因為他說「我們是為死人受洗」,就是為我們的身體受洗;
for 'we are baptized,' he says, 'on behalf of the dead,' that is, of our bodies;
23:83
so also those men, having taken courage from Moses—
23:84
that is, having seen him cross over first—themselves also ventured upon the waters.
23:85
But since he wishes to bring the type close to the reality, he does not speak in this way, but uses the names belonging to the reality even in the case of the type.
23:86
這確實是那洗滌之洗的表號;
And this indeed is the symbol of the laver;
23:87
but the things that follow are the symbol of the sacred table.
23:88
正如你喫主的身體,那些人也喫嗎哪;
For just as you eat the Lord's body, so those men ate the manna;
23:89
and just as you drink the blood, so also those men drank water from the rock.
23:90
For even though the things done were sensible, yet they were supplied spiritually—not according to the sequence of nature, but according to the bounty of grace—and, together with the body, nourished also the soul, leading it on to faith.
23:91
正因這緣故,他論到那食物就一言未發;
For this very reason he said nothing concerning the food;
23:92
因為那食物所不同的,不僅在乎方式,也在乎本質;
for it was different not only in its manner but also in its nature;
23:93
至於那飲料,因為惟有供應的方式是奇異的,並且需要一番安排;
but concerning the drink, since only the manner of the supply was marvelous, and it required preparation;
23:94
therefore, having said, 'They drank the same spiritual drink,' he added,
23:95
'For they drank of a spiritual Rock that followed them;'
23:96
and he added, 'And the Rock was Christ.'
23:97
他說,發出那水的並不是磐石的本性;
For it was not the nature of the rock that sent forth the water, he says;
23:98
不然的話,那水在此之前早就湧流出來了;
for otherwise it would have gushed forth even before this;
23:99
but some other, spiritual Rock wrought the whole thing—that is, Christ, who was present with them everywhere and worked all the wonders.
23:100
For on this account he said, 'that followed them.'
23:101
你看見保羅的智慧麼,他怎樣顯明基督乃是這兩者的供應者,並藉此使預表貼近實際?他說,那將那些事物供應給那些人的,也就是這一位為我們預備了這桌;
You see Paul's wisdom, how he shows that Christ was the supplier of both, and by this brings the type close to the reality? For He who furnished those things to those men, he says, this same One also prepared this table;
23:102
又是這同一位領那些人經過海,也領你經過洗禮;
and the same One led those men through the sea and led you through baptism;
23:103
and to them He gave manna and water, and to you He gave body and blood.
23:104
祂恩賜的事既是如此;
And such are the things pertaining to His gift;
23:105
but let us look also at what follows, and consider whether He spared these people when they showed themselves unworthy of the gift.
23:106
然而你斷不能這樣說;
But you could not say this;
23:107
wherefore he added, 'But with most of them God was not well pleased'—and that, though He had honored them with so great an honor.
23:108
But this profited them nothing; rather, the greater part perished.
23:109
But lest he should seem to be prophesying utter destruction to these Corinthians also, on this account he said, 'the greater part.'
23:110
他們雖然是無數的,然而他們的眾多卻於他們無益;
And yet they were countless, but their multitude profited them nothing;
23:111
and all those things were tokens of love, but neither did this profit them, since they themselves did not display the works of love.
23:112
因為許多人不信有關地獄的話,只因它既不現前,也不可見,所以他就從那已經發生的事顯明:神必懲罰犯罪的人,縱使祂曾千萬次施恩於他們;
For since many disbelieve the words about hell, inasmuch as it is not present nor visible, he shows from things that have already come to pass that God punishes those who sin, even though He may have benefited them ten thousand times over;
23:113
for even if you disbelieve the things to come, he says, yet surely you will not disbelieve the things that have already happened.
23:114
那麼你們就當思想,祂向這些人所施的恩惠是何等的大;
Consider, then, how great were the benefits He bestowed on these people;
23:115
祂救他們脫離埃及,並在那裏的奴役,祂在他們腳下鋪開了海,從天上降下嗎哪,從地底湧上奇異非常的水泉,祂無論在何處都與他們同在行奇事,四面環繞護庇他們;
He delivered them from Egypt and from the bondage there, He spread out the sea beneath them, He brought down manna from heaven, He sent up from below strange and marvelous springs of water, He was present with them everywhere working wonders, and walling them about on every side;
23:116
yet nevertheless, since they displayed nothing worthy of this gift, He did not spare them, but destroyed them all.
23:117
'For they were overthrown,' he says, 'in the wilderness,'
23:118
signifying by this expression their sudden destruction, and the chastisements and the God-sent punishments, and that they did not even attain the prizes set before them.
23:119
For He did not work these things upon them in the land of promise, but outside it, somewhere far off and remote from that country, punishing them with a twofold punishment: both by not permitting them to see the land—and that though it had been promised to them—and by chastising them severely.
23:120
And what have these things to do with us? one asks;
23:121
'Now these things happened as types of us.'
23:122
因為正如那些恩賜是預表,那些懲治照樣也是預表;
For just as the gifts were types, so also the chastisements are types;
23:123
and just as baptism and the table were prefigured beforehand, so also, through the things that came after, it was proclaimed in advance for our sakes that those who are unworthy of this gift shall likewise be punished—that we might become more temperate by those examples.
23:124
'That we should not be desirers of evil things, as they also desired.'
23:125
For just as in the benefits the types went before and the truth followed after, so also in the punishments it will follow.
23:126
Do you see how he shows, not merely that
23:127
they shall be punished, but that they shall be punished even more severely than those of old? For if the one was a type and the other the truth, of necessity there must be great superiority also in the punishments, just as there is in the gifts.
23:128
And observe whom he first lays hold of:
23:129
those who ate in the idol-temples.
23:130
For having said, 'Be not desirers of evil things'—which was the general statement—he adds also the particular kind, showing that each of the sins arose from an evil desire:
23:131
'Neither be idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written,
23:132
The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.'
23:133
Do you hear how he now also calls them idolaters? But here he merely asserts it, while later on he also establishes it by proof.
23:134
And he has set down the cause also, on account of which they ran to those tables:
23:135
所以,他既說了「使我們不作貪戀惡事的人」,又加上「你們不要拜偶像」,便指出這樣違法之事的緣由;
Wherefore, having said, 'That we should not be desirers of evil things,' and having added, 'Neither be idolaters,' he sets down the cause of such transgression;
23:136
and this was gluttony.
23:137
'For the people sat down,' he says, 'to eat and drink.'
23:138
他又加上由此而生的結局,就是「他們起來玩耍」。他說,正如那些人從宴樂放縱轉入拜偶像;
And he adds the result that came of it, that 'They rose up to play.' For just as those men, he says, passed from luxury into idolatry;
23:139
so there is fear lest you also from this fall thither.
23:140
你看見他怎樣顯明這些自以為完全的人,比那些古人更不完全麼?他責打他們,不僅因他們不肯擔待軟弱的人,也因為有些人是出於無知而犯罪,有些人卻是出於貪食而犯罪;
Do you see how he showed these supposedly perfect ones to be more imperfect than those of old? Whom he smote not only by this, that they would not bear with the weak, but also because some sinned from ignorance and others from gluttony;
23:141
and the punishment for the destruction of those he reckons against these; nor does he permit these to refer the pretext of their own sin to another, but declares them accountable both for the harm of those and for their own.
23:142
'Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication.'
23:143
他既在前面論到淫亂已說了那麼多,為何在此又提起它呢?保羅素來的習慣是:每當他為著許多罪責備人時,總是把這些罪按次序排列,逐一加以陳述;且在論及別的罪時,又重提前面的罪;
For what reason does he here mention fornication again, having discoursed so much about it before? It is ever Paul's custom, when he brings accusation concerning many sins, both to set them in order and to go through them one by one as they lie before him, and again in his discourses about others to make mention also of the former ones;
23:144
which indeed God also did under the Old Covenant, reminding the Jews of the calf at each of their transgressions, and bringing that sin into the midst.
23:145
This then is what Paul also does here, at once reminding them of that sin, and teaching that this evil too was born from that source, from luxury and gluttony.
23:146
'Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.'
23:147
他為何不也記下拜偶像所受的刑罰呢?或許因為那事本是明顯而更清楚的;
And why does he not set down also the punishment for the idolatry? Either because it was plain and more evident;
23:148
or because so great a plague did not then occur, as in the case of Balaam, when they were initiated to Baal-peor, the Midianite women having appeared before the army and drawn them into licentiousness according to the counsel of Balaam.
23:149
For that this wicked counsel was Balaam's, Moses makes plain when he afterward speaks thus, near the end of the Book of Numbers:
23:150
'And they slew Balaam the son of Beor in the war of Midian, among their slain, and brought the spoils.'
23:151
'And Moses was wroth, and said:
23:152
Why have you saved alive every female? For these were unto the sons of Israel a stumbling-block, according to the word of Balaam, to make them depart and disregard the word of the Lord for Peor's sake.'
23:153
'Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by the serpents.'
23:154
By this again he hints at another charge, which he also sets down near the end, accusing them of contending about signs, and of murmuring on account of their trials, saying, When will the good things come, when the rewards? Wherefore on this account also he goes on to correct them and put them in fear:
23:155
'Neither murmur, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.'
23:156
For neither is this the only thing required, to suffer for Christ, but also to bear the things that come nobly, and with all gladness.
23:157
因為這才是那全備的冠冕;
For this is the whole crown;
23:158
so that, if this be not so, punishment too will follow those who are impatient.
23:159
For this cause the apostles also rejoiced when they were scourged, and Paul gloried in his sufferings.
23:160
'And they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.'
23:161
Again he strikes fear by speaking of 'the ends,' and prepares them to expect greater things than those that have happened.
23:162
他說,我們必要受罰,這從所說的話已是明顯的,甚至對那些不信地獄之說的人也是明顯的;
For that we shall pay the penalty is clear, he says, from the things spoken, even to those who disbelieve the words concerning hell;
23:163
and that we shall pay a more grievous penalty is clear from the greater benefits which we have enjoyed, and from the fact that those things were types.
23:164
For if in the gifts there is a superiority, it is evident that there is one also in the punishment.
23:165
For this reason he both called them types, and said they were written for our sake, and made mention of the end, that he might remind them of the consummation.
23:166
For the punishments then were not such as to have any end and be dissolved, but the chastisement is everlasting.
23:167
For just as the punishments here are dissolved together with the present life, so those there abide perpetually.
23:168
But when he says, 'The ends of the ages,' he means nothing else than that the fearful tribunal is henceforth close at hand.
23:169
'Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.'
23:170
Again he cast down the conceit of those who thought highly of themselves on account of their knowledge.
23:171
因為若那些享受過如許之多的人尚且遭受這樣的事,其中有些人單為發怨言就受了這樣的刑罰,另有些人是為試探神;並且他們的人數眾多未能使神顧惜,他們得著這樣的恩典也未能如此;
For if those who had enjoyed so many things suffered such things, and some paid such a penalty for murmuring alone, and others for tempting, and neither did their multitude shame God, nor their attaining to such privileges;
23:172
much more shall this be so in our case, if we are not watchful.
23:173
因為這自恃己力之事,根本就不算按當站立的樣式站立;
For this very thing is not even to stand, as one ought to stand—to be confident in oneself;
23:174
因為這樣的人必快快跌倒;
for such a one will quickly fall;
23:175
since those men too, had they not thought highly and been confident, but had been humbled, would not have suffered these things.
23:176
Whence it is plain that arrogance most of all, and next sloth, and gluttony, are the sources of these evils.
23:177
So that even if you stand, guard against falling.
23:178
For to stand here is not to stand securely, until we are delivered from the waves of the present life, and sail into the calm harbor.
23:179
Therefore do not think highly of yourself because of your standing, but guard against the fall.
23:180
For if Paul feared, who was firmer than all men, much more ought we to fear.
23:181
如今使徒說:「所以自以為站立得穩的,須要謹慎,免得跌倒」;
Now the Apostle said, 'Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall';
23:182
but we cannot even say this, seeing that almost all, so to speak, have fallen and been laid low and lie upon the ground.
23:183
For to whom shall I say this? To the man who plunders every day? But he lies fallen with a great fall.
23:184
Or to the fornicator? But he is cast upon the ground.
23:185
還是向那醉酒之人麼?他也是躺臥著;
Or to the drunkard? But he too lies prostrate;
23:186
and he does not even know that he lies there.
23:187
So that it is not the time for this saying, but for that prophetic one, which He also spoke to the Jews:
23:188
'Shall not he that falls arise?' For indeed all lie prostrate, and are not willing to rise up.
23:189
So that our exhortation is not that we should not fall, but that those who lie fallen may be able to rise.
23:190
Let us then arise, late though it be, beloved—let us arise, and stand nobly.
23:191
How long do we lie? how long are we drunk, stupefied with the great desire for the things of this life? It is seasonable to say even now:
23:192
'To whom shall I speak, and testify?' So deaf are all, even to the very teaching of virtue, and so filled thereby with many evils!
23:193
And if it were possible to see souls laid bare, just as on the battlefields, when the engagement is over, one may behold some dead and others wounded, so also in the Church we should have seen it.
23:194
Therefore I beseech and exhort you, let us stretch out a hand to one another and rise up together.
23:195
For I too am among the wounded, and among those who need one to apply the remedies.
23:196
但你們不要因此就絕望;
But do not on this account despair;
23:197
for though the wounds be grievous, yet they are not incurable.
23:198
Only let us be conscious of our wounds; and even if we have come to the very uttermost of wickedness, He cuts out for us many roads of salvation.
23:199
因為你若饒恕鄰舍的忿怒,你自己的過犯也必蒙饒恕;
For if you forgive your neighbor his anger, your own transgressions shall be forgiven you;
23:200
'For if you forgive men,' He says, 'your heavenly Father will also forgive you.'
23:201
你若施捨賙濟,祂必赦免你的罪;
If you give alms, He will pardon your sins;
23:202
'For redeem your iniquities,' He says, 'by almsgiving.'
23:203
If you pray earnestly, you will obtain remission.
23:204
And this the widow shows, who bent that harsh judge by the persistence of her entreaty.
23:205
你若自己控告自己的罪,你就有安慰;
If you accuse yourself of your sins, you have consolation;
23:206
'For declare you first your sins, that you may be justified.'
23:207
你若為這些罪憂傷愁苦,這對你也必成為極大的良藥;
If you are downcast on account of them, this too shall be for you a very great remedy;
23:208
'For I saw,' He says, 'that he was grieved and went about mournful, and I healed his ways.'
23:209
If, having suffered some evil, you bear it nobly, you have stripped off the whole.
23:210
For this too Abraham said to the rich man, that 'Lazarus received his evil things, and here he is comforted.'
23:211
你若憐憫寡婦,你的罪就被洗淨;
If you show mercy to a widow, your sins are washed away;
23:212
因為祂說:「你們要為孤兒伸冤,為寡婦辨屈;來吧,我們彼此辯論,這是耶和華說的;
'For judge the fatherless,' He says, 'and do justice to the widow; and come, let us reason together, says the Lord;
23:213
你們的罪雖像硃紅,我必使它們潔白如雪;
and though your sins be as scarlet, I will make them white as snow;
23:214
and though they be as crimson, I will make them white as wool.'
23:215
For He does not suffer even a scar of the wounds to appear.
23:216
但即使我們已墮入那罪惡的深淵,就是那揮霍盡父親家業、以豆莢充飢的人所墮入的深淵,只要我們悔改,就必定得救;
But even if we have come into that depth of evils, into which he fell who had devoured his father's substance and was eating husks, if we repent, we are altogether saved;
23:217
縱使我們欠下一萬他連得,只要我們俯伏下拜、不懷怨恨,一切都必蒙赦免;
and though we owe ten thousand talents, if we fall down and cherish no resentment, all is forgiven us;
23:218
縱使我們流浪迷失到那羊走迷的地方,祂也必從那裡把我們領回;
and though we have wandered astray to that place where the sheep strayed off, from thence too He brings us back;
23:219
only let us be willing, beloved.
23:220
For this reason, in the case of him who owed ten thousand talents, He was content with the prostration; and in the case of him who had devoured his father's substance, with the mere return; and in the case of the sheep, with its willingness to be carried.
23:221
Considering therefore the greatness of His lovingkindness, let us here make Him propitious to us, and let us come before His presence with confession, lest departing hence without defense we endure the uttermost punishment.
23:222
因為我們若在今生顯出殷勤,哪怕只是一點,也必得著至大的益處;
For if in the present life we display zeal, even but a little, we shall gain the greatest things;
23:223
but if we depart hence having become no better here, even though we repent more vehemently there, it will avail us nothing.
23:224
因為人必須在競技場的界限之內爭戰,而不是在戲場散場之後才徒然地哀號流淚;
For one must contend while remaining within the lists, not wail and weep uselessly after the theater has been dismissed;
23:225
which is what that rich man did, lamenting indeed and bewailing, but thenceforth in vain and to no purpose, since he had overlooked the time in which he ought to have done these things.
23:226
不只是他一人,如今還有許多與他一樣的財主,他們不肯輕看錢財,卻為著錢財而輕看自己的靈魂;
And not he alone, but many others also like him are now rich, unwilling indeed to despise wealth, but despising their soul in exchange for wealth;
23:227
at whom I am moved to marvel, when I see them continually entreating God for mercy, yet inflicting incurable evils upon themselves, and being as unsparing of their own soul as though it were an enemy.
23:228
Let us not then trifle, beloved, let us not trifle, nor deceive ourselves, asking God to have mercy on us, while we ourselves set above this mercy both money and luxury and, in a word, everything.
23:229
For if someone brought a suit against you, and in accusing a certain man said that, though about to suffer ten thousand deaths and being able to reverse the sentence with a little money, he chose rather to die than to part with any of his goods, you would not say that he deserved any mercy or pardon.
23:230
那麼,你也當如此思量自己;
This, then, reckon also with respect to yourself;
23:231
for we too do this very thing, and despising our own salvation, we spare our money.
23:232
How then do you ask God to spare you, while you are yourself so unsparing of yourself, and prefer money to your soul? Wherefore I am also greatly amazed at how much sorcery lies hidden in money, or rather not in money, but in the souls of those who are deceived by it.
23:233
For there are, there are indeed, those who even greatly deride this witchcraft.
23:234
For what is there sufficient in these things to bewitch us? Is not the material lifeless? Is it not perishable? Is not the possession of it insecure? Is it not full of fears and dangers? Of murders and treacheries? Of enmity and hatred? Of much sloth and vice? Is it not earth and ashes? What madness is this, what disease!
23:235
But indeed, someone says, one must not only accuse those who are sick with such things, but also dissolve the passion.
23:236
And how shall we dissolve it otherwise than by showing it to be base and full of ten thousand evils? But this is not easy—to persuade the lover concerning his beloved.
23:237
We must therefore set another beauty against it.
23:238
但他既仍在病中,就看不見那非物質的美;
But while still sick he does not see the incorporeal beauty;
23:239
let us therefore display a bodily one, and say to him:
23:240
你且思想那草地和其中的花朵,它們比一切金子更燦爛,比各樣的寶石更秀美、更晶瑩;
Consider the meadows and the flowers in them, brighter than all gold and more graceful and translucent than gems of every kind;
23:241
你且思想那泉源清澈的水流,思想那如油一般無聲地從地裡流出的江河;
consider the clear streams of the fountains, the rivers that flow noiselessly from the earth like oil;
23:242
go up to heaven, and behold the beauty of the sun, the comeliness of the moon, the flowers of the stars.
23:243
For indeed we do not use these things as we use money.
23:244
And yet more than money, inasmuch as the need of them is more necessary, and the enjoyment of them more secure.
23:245
因為你不必懼怕有人會像奪取錢財那樣把它們奪去;
For you do not fear lest someone, as with money, take them and go off;
23:246
but it is possible for you to be confident concerning them continually, and that too without anxiety or care.
23:247
But if you are grieved because you enjoy them together with others, and do not possess them alone as you do money, you seem to me to love not money but only greed.
23:248
For neither would you have loved money, if it lay open in common to all.
23:249
既然我們已找出了你所愛的——我是說貪婪——來吧,讓我指給你看她是何等恨你、厭棄你,她磨了多少刀劍要對付你,挖了多少深坑,張設了多少羅網,預備了多少懸崖;
Since then we have found your beloved—I mean greed—come, let me show you how she hates you and turns away from you, how many swords she whets against you, how many pits she digs, how many nooses she kindles, how many precipices she prepares;
23:250
that even so you may quench the love-charm.
23:251
Whence then is it possible to know these things? From the highways, from the wars, from the sea, from the courts of law.
23:252
For indeed she has filled the deep with blood, and often unlawfully stains the swords of the judges, and arms those who lie in wait upon the roads by night and by day, and has persuaded men to be ignorant of nature, and has made parricides and matricides, and has brought into life all evils.
23:253
Wherefore Paul also calls it the root of these evils.
23:254
She suffers her own lovers to be in no better case than those who labor in the mines.
23:255
因為正如那些人不斷被囚禁、被捆綁在黑暗中,徒勞無益地做工;
For just as those men, continually shut up and bound in darkness, toil to no profit;
23:256
so also these, buried in the caverns of avarice, with no one imposing necessity upon them, of their own accord draw down punishment upon themselves, putting about themselves bonds that cannot be loosed.
23:257
那些被定罪的囚犯,到了晚上至少還得從勞苦中歇息;
And the condemned, when evening comes on, are at least released from their labors;
23:258
但這些人卻晝夜不停地開採這些惡毒的礦坑;
but these, both by day and by night, dig at these wicked mines;
23:259
and for the former there is an appointed measure of that toilsome labor, but these know no measure at all, but the more they dig, the more they long for greater misery.
23:260
And if the former do it unwillingly, but these willingly, you tell me the grievous part of the disease—that they cannot even be delivered, seeing that they do not even hate their wretchedness.
23:261
But like a swine in the mire, so also these, wallowing in the foul stenches of avarice, take pleasure in it, suffering things more grievous than those condemned men.
23:262
For that they are in a worse case, hear the condition of the former, and then you will know that of the latter.
23:263
據說那出產黃金的地方,在那些幽暗的洞穴裡有許多孔穴和藏身之處;
It is said, then, that that gold-bearing land has holes and hiding-places within those gloomy caverns;
23:264
The malefactor, then, who has been condemned to the toils of that place, on this account takes a lamp and a mattock, and so goes in within, and carries with him a little oil-flask, so that from it he may drip oil upon the lamp; for by reason of the darkness the place is without light even in the daytime, as I said before.
23:265
Then, when the hour calls him to his wretched meal, he himself does not know the time; but the keeper of that prison, striking violently upon the cave from above, makes known by that din and by that voice to those working below the ending of the day.
23:266
Did you not shudder on hearing these things? Let us see, then, whether the lovers of money do not suffer things more grievous than these.
23:267
For these too have a heavier jailer, namely covetousness; and by so much the heavier, in that it binds fast together with the body their very soul as well.
23:268
而且這黑暗也比那另一種更為可怕;
And this darkness too is more dreadful than that other;
23:269
for it is not perceptible to the senses, but, engendering it from within themselves, wherever they go they carry it about with them everywhere.
23:270
For the eye of their soul has been quenched.
23:271
Wherefore also, above all others, Christ pronounces them wretched, saying:
23:272
'But if the light that is in you be darkness, how great is the darkness!'
23:273
那些人至少還有一盞發光的燈;但這些人卻連這點光亮也被剝奪了;
And those men at least have a lamp giving light; but these are deprived even of this radiance;
23:274
wherefore also each day they fall into ten thousand pits.
23:275
那些被定罪的人,當夜晚來臨時,便得以喘息,因他們駛入了那遭遇不幸之人所共有的平靜——我是指黑夜;
The condemned, when night comes on, breathe again, having sailed into the common calm of those who are in misfortune—I mean the night;
23:276
但對貪愛錢財的人,貪婪連這港口也淤塞了;
but for the lovers of money, covetousness silts up even this harbor;
23:277
so many things do they anxiously ponder even in the night, grievously, since—no one troubling them—with all leisure they cut themselves to pieces.
23:278
此處的情形便是這樣;
And such are the things here;
23:279
but the things there, what discourse shall set forth?—the intolerable furnaces, the rivers flaming with fire, the gnashing teeth, the bonds that cannot be loosed, the venomous worm, the lightless darkness, the evils that never come to an end. Let us therefore fear, beloved, let us fear the fountain of so many torments, the insatiable madness, the ruin of our salvation.
23:280
For it is not possible at the same time both to love money and to love one's soul.
23:281
Let us learn that riches are earth and ashes, that they forsake us as we depart hence; or rather, that even before our departure they often leap away from us, and injure us both as to the things to come and as to the present life.
23:282
For even before hell and before that punishment, here also it involves us in ten thousand wars, and stirs up factions and battles.
23:283
因為沒有甚麼像貪愛錢財這樣挑起戰爭的;
For nothing is so productive of war as the love of money;
23:284
nothing so productive of poverty, whether it appear amid wealth or amid want.
23:285
For this grievous disease grows up even in the souls of the poor, and afflicts their poverty yet more.
23:286
And if a poor man be found covetous, such a one pays the penalty not in money, but in famine.
23:287
因為他不甘心安然享用自己那點微薄的所有,反倒用饑餓折磨自己的肚腹,用赤身和寒冷懲罰自己的全身,並且處處顯得比囚犯更加骯髒污穢;
For he cannot endure to enjoy his moderate means with security, but he racks his belly with hunger, and punishes his whole body with nakedness and cold, and everywhere appears more squalid and filthy than the prisoners;
23:288
and he is ever wailing and lamenting, as though he were the most wretched of all, even though he have ten thousand poorer than himself.
23:289
這人即使進到市場去,回來時也帶著許多的傷痕;
This man, even if he go into the marketplace, comes away having received many bruises;
23:290
even if into the bath, even if into the theater, he will receive yet more wounds, not from the spectators only, but even from those upon the stage, when he sees many of the harlot women gleaming with gold.
23:291
這人即使航行海上,一想到那些商人、那些載運巨量貨物的船隻、以及那無窮的利潤,就連自己還活著也不肯承認;
This man, even if he sail the sea, considering the merchants again and the ships that carry ten thousand loads and the boundless gains, will not even reckon himself to be alive;
23:292
他若走陸路,一盤算那些田地、郊外的莊園、客棧、浴場、以及從這些而來的收入,此後便要認為自己的生活毫無可過之處;
and if he travel by land, reckoning up the fields, the suburban estates, the inns, the baths, and the revenues from these, he will thenceforth deem his own life not worth living;
23:293
縱使你把他關在家裡,他把從市場帶來的傷口重新撕開,獨自一人時,反倒更劇烈地殘害自己的靈魂;
and even if you shut him up at home, tearing open again the wounds from the marketplace, by himself he will the more grievously ravage his own soul;
23:294
and he knows of but one consolation alone for the evils that possess him—death and the release therefrom.
23:295
But these things not the poor man only, but also the rich man who has fallen into this disease will suffer, and by so much more than the poor man, in that a more vehement tyranny lies upon him, and a greater drunkenness.
23:296
Wherefore also he will deem himself poorer than all men; or rather he even is poorer.
23:297
因為判斷貧富,不是憑財產的多寡,乃是憑心思的意向;
For it is not by the measure of one's substance, but by the disposition of the mind, that wealth and poverty are judged;
23:298
and that man is rather the poorest of all who ever desires more, and can never bring to a stand this wicked desire.
23:299
所以為著這一切的緣故,我們要逃避貪愛錢財,就是那製造貧窮的、敗壞靈魂的、與地獄為友的、與天國為敵的、眾惡之母;
For all these reasons then let us flee the love of money—the maker of poverty, the corrupter of the soul, the friend of hell, the enemy of the kingdom of heaven, the mother of all evils together;
23:300
我們要輕看財富,好叫我們得享財富,並且與財富一同也得享那應許給我們的美善之物;
and let us despise riches, that we may enjoy riches, and together with riches may enjoy also the good things promised to us;
