Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions even as I delivered them to you.
26:2
Having brought to completion the discourse concerning things sacrificed to idols, as was fitting for him, and having wrought it out most perfectly throughout, he passes on to another matter.
26:3
This too was itself a charge, yet not so great a one.
26:4
For, as I said before, this I will now also say, that he does not set down all his severe accusations in unbroken succession, but arranging them in the fitting order, he intersperses among them the lighter ones, softening the harshness of the discourse that arises in the hearers from continual rebuke.
26:5
Wherefore also he sets down the sharpest of all last, that concerning the resurrection.
26:6
But for the present he proceeds to another lighter matter, saying:
26:7
Now I praise you that you remember me in all things.
26:8
因為每逢那罪是眾所公認的,他就嚴厲地責備,並加以警戒;
For whenever the sin is acknowledged, he both accuses vehemently and threatens;
26:9
但每逢那事還有疑問的,他就先加以證實,然後才責備;
but whenever it is doubtful, he first establishes it, and then rebukes;
26:10
and the acknowledged sin he heightens, while the disputable one he shows to be acknowledged.
26:11
例如,姦淫乃是眾所公認的罪;
For instance, fornication was an acknowledged sin;
26:12
wherefore he had no need to show that it was a sin, but there he established the magnitude of the offence, and carried on his discourse by way of comparison.
26:13
再者,在外人面前彼此告狀,固然是罪,卻不是那麼嚴重的;
Again, going to law before others was indeed a sin, yet not so great a one;
26:14
wherefore he both introduced it and established it.
26:15
至於祭偶像之物的事,則是有爭議的,卻是極大的惡;
The matter of things sacrificed to idols, again, was disputed, yet was a very great evil;
26:16
wherefore he both demonstrates that it is a sin, and heightens it by his discourse.
26:17
And whenever he does this, he not only leads them away from the charges, but also brings them on to the contrary virtues.
26:18
For neither did he say only that one ought not to commit fornication, but that one ought also to display much holiness.
26:19
'Glorify God therefore in your body, and in your spirit.'
26:20
And having said again that one ought not to be wise in the outward wisdom, he is not content with this, but bids one even become a fool.
26:21
And counselling them not to go to law before the outsiders nor to do wrong, as he proceeds he even does away with going to law altogether, and counsels them not only not to do wrong, but even to suffer wrong.
26:22
他論到祭偶像之物的時候,並沒有說人只當戒絕那被禁止的事,乃是說:每逢有絆跌人的事發生,連那本可容許的事也當戒絕;
And discoursing about things sacrificed to idols, he did not say that one ought only to abstain from the forbidden things, but even from the permitted ones, whenever an occasion of stumbling arises;
26:23
並且說,不但不可傷害弟兄,就連希臘人和猶太人也不可傷害;
and that one should strike not the brethren only, but neither the Greeks nor the Jews;
26:24
'For be without offence,' he says, 'both to Jews and to Greeks and to the Church of God.'
26:25
Having therefore filled up the whole discourse concerning all these matters, after these things he proceeds now to yet another charge.
26:26
那是甚麼呢?就是婦女們露著頭、不蒙頭而禱告並說預言;
But what was this? The women were both praying and prophesying uncovered and with the head bare;
26:27
因為那時婦女也是說預言的;
for women did prophesy then too;
26:28
至於男人,則因曾致力於哲學而留長頭髮,並在禱告和說預言時蒙著頭;
while the men wore their hair long, as those who had spent their time in philosophy, and covered their heads when praying and prophesying;
26:29
each of which was a custom of the Greek law.
26:30
Since therefore he had already exhorted them concerning these things when present, and perhaps some obeyed while others disobeyed, for this reason through the Epistle also, like a wise physician, applying his words as a fomentation, he corrects the fault.
26:31
For that he had already exhorted them when present is plain from the way he begins.
26:32
For why, having said nothing about this anywhere earlier in the Epistle, but coming out of other charges, does he immediately say:
26:33
'Now I praise you that you remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions even as I delivered them to you'? Do you see that some obeyed—those whom he praises—while others disobeyed—those whom he corrects in what follows, saying:
26:34
「若有人想要辯駁,我們卻沒有這樣的規矩」?因為,倘若在有的行得好、有的卻違背的情形下,他把眾人一概加以責備,就必使前者更加放肆,並使後者更加懈怠;
'But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom'? For if, when some had done well and others had disobeyed, he had subjected all to accusation, he would both have made the former more presumptuous and rendered the latter more careless;
26:35
but as it is, having praised and approved the one party, and censured the other, he both anointed the former the more and prepared the latter to hide themselves for shame.
26:36
因為責備本身已足以刺痛人;
For accusation of itself is sufficient to smite;
26:37
but whenever it is made by comparison with others who have done well and are being praised, it has a sharper sting.
26:38
But for the present he begins not with accusation, but with praises, and with great praises, saying:
26:39
'Now I praise you that you remember me in all things.'
26:40
For such is Paul's wont: even upon small occasions he weaves great praises, doing this not out of flattery—far from it!
26:41
For how could he, who coveted neither money, nor glory, nor any other such thing? but did all for their salvation.
26:42
Wherefore also he heightens the praise, saying:
26:43
'Now I praise you that you remember me in all things.'
26:44
「凡事」是指甚麼呢?因為到此為止,他對他們所講的,不過是論到不可留長頭髮、不可蒙頭這事;
In what sense 'all things'? For so far his discourse to them had been only about not wearing the hair long nor being covered;
26:45
but, as I said, he lavishes his praises, making them more eager.
26:46
Wherefore he says, 'That you remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions even as I delivered them to you.'
26:47
So then he was even delivering many things unwritten at that time, which he also declares in many other places.
26:48
But at that former point he merely delivered the injunction, whereas now he also sets down the reason for it.
26:49
For in this way he both made his hearers stronger, and pulled down the arrogance of those who set themselves in opposition.
26:50
Then he does not say, 'You indeed obeyed, but others disobeyed'; rather, without giving offence, he hints at it through his teaching in what follows, speaking thus:
26:51
'But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ;'
26:52
'and the head of the woman is the man;'
26:53
and he lays it down thus, making the weaker more attentive.
26:54
那如所當然般既堅定又剛強的信徒,對於凡吩咐他的事,並不需要理由或解釋,單憑所傳授的便心滿意足;
Now the believer who is, as he ought to be, both firm and strong, has no need of reason or explanation for whatever he may be enjoined, but is content with the tradition alone;
26:55
but the weaker one, when he has also learned the reason, then holds fast what has been said with greater earnestness, and obeys with much readiness.
26:56
For this very reason he did not state the cause until he saw the commandment being transgressed.
26:57
What then is the reason? 'The head of every man is Christ.'
26:58
Is He then also the head of the Greek? By no means.
26:59
因為我們若是基督的身體,並且各自作肢體,祂正是在這意義上作我們的頭;那麼對於那些不在身體之內、也不算為肢體的人,祂便不會是他們的頭;
For if we are the body of Christ and severally members of it, and in this respect He is our head, He could not be the head of those who are not in the body nor counted among its members;
26:60
so that when he says 'of every man,' we must understand him to mean 'of every believer.'
26:61
Do you see how everywhere he puts the hearer to shame by starting from above? For when he was discoursing on love, and when on humility, and when on almsgiving, it was from that source that he drew his examples.
26:62
'And the head of the woman is the man.'
26:63
在這裡,那些異端者向我們撲來,想從這些話為子構想出某種次等的地位;
Here the heretics leap upon us, devising from these words some sort of inferiority for the Son;
26:64
but they fall foul of their own argument.
26:65
For if the man is the head of the woman, and the head is of one substance with the body, and God is the head of Christ, then the Son is of one substance with the Father.
26:66
'But it is not the difference of substance that we mean to prove from this,' says he, 'but that He is under rule.'
26:67
What then should we say to this? That above all, when anything lowly is spoken of Him while He is in the flesh, what is said is no disparagement of the Godhead, since it is the economy of the incarnation that admits of the saying.
26:68
But nevertheless, tell me, how do you now wish to establish this from that text? 'That just as the man rules over the woman,' he says, 'so also does the Father rule over Christ.'
26:69
那麼照此推論,正如基督管轄男人,父也照樣管轄子;
Then in that case, just as Christ rules over the man, so also does the Father rule over the Son;
26:70
'for the head of every man,' he says, 'is Christ.'
26:71
And who could ever accept such a conclusion? For if the Son's superiority over us is as great as the Father's over the Son, consider to what depth of meanness you are dragging Him.
26:72
所以在我們身上與在神身上,並非凡事都要以同樣的方式來衡量,縱使所用的字詞相同;
So that not everything is to be examined in the same way in our case and in the case of God, even though the same terms be used;
26:73
rather, we must assign to God a certain proper pre-eminence, and one as great as befits God.
26:74
For if they will not grant this, many absurdities will follow.
26:75
God is the head of Christ, and He is the head of the man, and the man of the woman.
26:76
Therefore, if we take 'head' in the same sense throughout, the Son will be as far removed from the Father as we are from Him.
26:77
而女人與我們相隔的距離,也會如同我們與神——道——相隔的一樣遠;
But the woman too will be as far distant from us as we are from God the Word;
26:78
and what the Son is in relation to the Father, that also shall we be in relation to the Son, and again the woman in relation to the man.
26:79
And who will endure this? But do you understand 'head' differently in the case of the woman and the man, and not as in the case of Christ? Then in the case of the Son and the Father also we must understand it differently.
26:80
'And how are we to understand it differently?' he asks.
26:81
For indeed, if Paul had been seeking to speak of rule and subjection, as you say, he would not have brought forward a woman as his example, but rather a slave and a master.
26:82
For even though the woman is subject to us, yet it is as a woman, as a free person, and as one of equal honour.
26:83
And the Son too, even though He became obedient to the Father, yet it was as the Son of God, as God.
26:84
For just as the obedience of the Son toward
26:85
父的順從,勝過世人對生養他們之人的順從;
the Father is greater than that of men toward those who begot them;
26:86
so also is the freedom greater.
26:87
For surely it cannot be that the Son's relations toward the Father are greater and more genuine than those of men, while the Father's toward the Son are less.
26:88
因為我們若因子順從以至於死,且死在十字架上而讚嘆祂,並將此視為祂身上極大的奇事;
For if we admire the Son because He obeyed so as even to come unto death, and that the death of the cross, and reckon this as a great marvel in Him;
26:89
我們也當讚嘆父,因祂生了這樣一位——不是像受命令的奴僕,乃是像自由地順從、且作謀士的那一位;
we ought also to admire the Father, that He begat such a One—not as a slave who is commanded, but as a free one who obeys and is a counsellor;
26:90
for the counsellor is no slave.
26:91
But again, when you hear 'counsellor,' do not take it as though the Father were in need, but as of the Child being of equal honour with Him who begat Him.
26:92
Do not, therefore, drag the example of the man and the woman into every point.
26:93
因為在我們中間,女人順服於男人是合理的;
For with us the woman is reasonably made subject to the man;
26:94
因為尊榮上的平等往往會引起爭端;
for equality of honour is wont to breed strife;
26:95
and not for this reason only, but also because of the deception which came to pass at the beginning.
26:96
正因如此,她受造之初,並未立刻被置於順服之下;
For this reason she was not made subject immediately upon being created;
26:97
無論是當神領她到那男人面前時,她並未從神聽見任何這類的話,那男人也未對她說任何這類的話;
neither when He brought her to the man did she hear any such thing from God, nor did the man say any such thing to her;
26:98
他所說的,乃是她是他骨中的骨、肉中的肉;
but that she was bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh, this he said;
26:99
然而他從未向她提及管轄或順服之事;
yet nowhere did he make mention of rule or subjection to her;
26:100
but when she had made an ill use of her authority, and she who had been created a helper was found to be a plotter, and had ruined everything, then at last she rightly hears:
26:101
'Thy desire shall be to thy husband.'
26:102
因為這罪很可能會使我們的族類彼此爭戰(既然這事已經發生,她原是出於他這一點,對和睦毫無助益;
For since it was likely that this sin would set our race at war within itself (for that she had come from him would have been no help toward peace, once this had happened;
26:103
反倒是這一點——那出於他的女子竟連自己的肢體也不顧惜——會使那男人更加苛刻);
nay rather, this very fact would have made the man the more harsh, namely that she who had come from him did not even spare her own member);
26:104
God, discerning the malice of the devil, set up this word as a bulwark, and by this sentence He did away with the enmity that was likely to arise from the treachery, and, as by a partition-wall, He held back the grudge born of sin by means of the inborn desire.
26:105
But in the case of God and of that incorruptible Nature, nothing of the kind can be suspected.
26:106
Do not, then, receive the examples as applying in every respect, since elsewhere too many grievous errors will meet you from this course.
26:107
For indeed even in the opening of the Epistle he said:
26:108
'All things are yours, and you are Christ's, and Christ is God's.'
26:109
What then? Are all things ours in the same way, and we Christ's, and Christ God's? By no means; but even to the exceedingly foolish the difference is plain, though the same expression is used of God and of Christ and of us.
26:110
And elsewhere too, having called the man the head of the woman, he added:
26:111
'Just as Christ is the head and Saviour and protector of the Church, so also ought the man to be of his own wife.'
26:112
Shall we then understand what is here said in the same way—both this and all that follows it, written to the Ephesians concerning this subject? Away with the thought!
26:113
因為同樣的話固然既論到神,也論到人;
For the same words are indeed spoken of God and of men;
26:114
但論神的那些話必須以一種方式來理解,論人的這些話則須以另一種方式來理解;
but the former must be understood in one way, and the latter in another;
26:115
然而反過來說,也並非凡事都要當作截然不同的;
and yet again, not everything is to be taken as utterly different;
26:116
since otherwise it will seem to have been introduced at random and to no purpose, we reaping no benefit from these things.
26:117
For just as not everything is to be taken alike, so neither is everything to be simply cast aside.
26:118
But that what I am saying may become clearer, I will try to make it plain by means of an example.
26:119
It has been said: Christ is the head of the Church.
26:120
如今若我不從人性方面取任何東西,那麼這話對我又有何意義呢?可是反過來,若我全然照搬,隨之而來的便是極大的荒謬;
Now if I take nothing from what is human, why has this even been said to me? But again, if I take everything, great absurdity will follow;
26:121
for the head is of like nature with the body, and subject to the same conditions.
26:122
那麼我們該撇下甚麼,又該保留甚麼呢?該撇下我所提及的那些,卻要保留那完全的合一,以及那第一的因與源;
What then must we set aside, and what must we retain? We must set aside these things which I have mentioned, but retain the perfect union, and the first cause and origin;
26:123
而且連這些也不可率意領會,就是在此也要按著題旨本身、以合乎神的方式,去思想那更高之事;
and not even these simply, but here too we must conceive of what is greater in a manner drawn from the subject itself and befitting God;
26:124
for the union is more secure, and the origin more honourable.
26:125
Do not take everything even here, yet neither cast everything away; but having received whatever befits God, that He is of the same essence, that He is from Him, leave upon earth the things that are unfitting and belong to human weakness.
26:126
再者,神曾被稱為光;
Again, God has been called light;
26:127
那麼凡屬這光的一切,我們都要接受麼?絕不;
shall we then accept everything that belongs to this light? By no means;
26:128
for there this is enclosed by darkness and by place,
26:129
又被另一種能力所推動,並被遮蔽;
and is moved by another power and is overshadowed;
26:130
none of which things is it even lawful to conceive concerning that Essence.
26:131
But neither on this account shall we cast everything away; rather we shall pluck something useful also from the example, gathering from it the illumination which comes to us from God, and our deliverance from darkness.
26:132
如此,這些就是針對異端者所說的了;
So much, then, against the heretics;
26:133
but now we must go through the whole passage in its entirety.
26:134
For perhaps someone here might be perplexed, asking within himself: what sort of offence was it for the women to be unveiled, or for the men to be veiled? What sort of offence this is, learn now from what follows.
26:135
許多不同的表記已賜給男人和女人:給前者的是治理的表記,給後者的是順服的表記;
Many tokens, and diverse, have been given to man and to woman: to the one, of rule; to the other, of subjection;
26:136
and along with those, this also: that she should be covered, while he should keep his head bare.
26:137
If then these are tokens, both sin by confounding the good order and the ordinance of God, and by overstepping their proper bounds: the man falling into her lowliness, and she rising up against the man through her outward appearance.
26:138
因為若連互換衣裳都是不合宜的,那麼她披上大氅、他戴上頭巾或蒙帕,也是不合宜的;
For if it is not lawful to exchange one's garment, so neither that she should wrap herself in a cloak, and he in a mantle or a veil;
26:139
因為經上說:『男子的物件不可加在女子身上,男人也不可穿婦女的衣服』;
for it says, The garments of a man shall not be upon a woman, neither shall a man put on a woman's robe;
26:140
much more, then, ought not these things to be interchanged.
26:141
因為那些乃是由人所定為律法的,雖然神後來也認可了它們;
For those things were enacted as law by men, even though God afterwards ratified them;
26:142
but this other is from nature—I mean the being covered and the not being covered.
26:143
而我一說本性,就是指神;
And when I say nature, I mean God;
26:144
for He who fashioned nature is Himself its author.
26:145
When, therefore, you overturn these bounds, see how many harmful things come to pass.
26:146
你也不要對我說,這所犯的罪不過是小事;
And do not tell me this, that the thing sinned in is a small matter;
26:147
因為即便就其本身而論,這也是大事;
for it is great, even in itself;
26:148
and even if it were small, it would become great, since it is a token of great matters.
26:149
And that it is indeed great is plain from this, that it affords such good order to our race, arranging in seemly fashion both the ruler and the ruled.
26:150
So that he who transgresses confounds all things, and betrays the gifts of God, and casts to the ground the honour given him from above—and not the man only, but the woman also.
26:151
For to her also it is the greatest honour to preserve her own rank, just as it is a shame to rebel.
26:152
Wherefore he has laid down the rule in the case of both.
26:153
凡男人禱告或申言,若蒙著頭,就羞辱自己的頭;
Every man praying or prophesying, having anything down over his head, dishonours his head;
26:154
but every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonours her head.
26:155
因為正如我所說的,那時有男人也有女人申言,並有婦女擁有這恩賜,如腓利的眾女兒,以及在她們以前和以後的其他婦女;
For there were, as I have said, both men and women who prophesied, and women who at that time possessed this gift, as the daughters of Philip, and others before them and after them;
26:156
concerning whom also the prophet spoke long before,
26:157
saying, Your sons shall prophesy, and your daughters shall see visions.
26:158
至於男人,他並不總是要求他不蒙頭,乃是單在他禱告的時候;
The man, then, he does not always compel to be unveiled, but only when he prays;
26:159
因為他說,凡男人禱告或申言,若蒙著頭,就羞辱自己的頭;
For every man, he says, praying or prophesying, having anything down over his head, dishonours his head;
26:160
but the woman he commands to be covered continually.
26:161
Wherefore also, having said, Every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonours her head,
26:162
he did not stop at this point only, but went further, saying:
26:163
For it is one and the same thing as being shaven.
26:164
But if to be always shaven is shameful, it is quite plain that to be always unveiled is likewise a reproach.
26:165
And not even with this was he content only, but again he added, saying that the woman ought to have authority upon her head because of the angels.
26:166
He shows that it is not only at the time of prayer, but continually, that she must be veiled.
26:167
But in the case of the man he no longer plies the argument about the covering, but that about the hair, thus:
26:168
for he forbids him to be covered only then, when he prays, but from wearing long hair he turns him away always.
26:169
為這緣故,正如他論到女人時說:『但她若不蒙著頭,就該剪了頭髮』;
For this cause, just as in the case of the woman he said, But if she is not covered, let her also be shorn;
26:170
so also in the case of the man, that If he wears long hair, it is a dishonour to him.
26:171
He did not say, If he is covered, but, If he wears long hair.
26:172
Every man praying or prophesying, having anything down over his head.
26:173
But, Having anything down over his head—showing that even if he prays with his head bare, yet has long hair, he is equal to one that is covered.
26:174
For the hair, he says, is given instead of a covering.
26:175
但女人若不蒙著頭,就該剪了頭髮;
But if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn;
26:176
but if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
26:177
因為在起初的話裏,他只要求她不可露著頭;
For in his opening words he requires only that she should not have her head bare;
26:178
but going on, he hints also at continuance, saying, For it is one and the same thing as being shaven—and that with all care and diligence.
26:179
For he did not say merely to be covered, but to be covered completely, so as to be exactly wrapped about on every side.
26:180
And by the reduction to an absurdity he puts her to shame, laying hold of the matter vehemently and saying, But if she is not covered, let her also be shorn.
26:181
For if you cast away the covering appointed by the law of God, he says, cast away also that which is from nature.
26:182
But if anyone says, And how can this be a shame to the woman, if she ascends to the glory of the man? we would say this, that she does not ascend, but even falls away from her own honour.
26:183
For not to abide within one's own bounds and within the laws appointed by God, but to overstep them, is not increase but diminution.
26:184
因為正如那貪圖別人之物、奪取非己所有之人,並未多得甚麼,反倒受了虧損,連自己所有的也失去了——這事也曾在樂園中發生;
For just as he who covets the things of others, and seizes what is not his own, has not gained anything more, but is diminished, having lost even what he had—which indeed also happened in paradise;
26:185
so also the woman does not gain to herself the nobility of the man, but even loses the comely dignity of the woman.
26:186
And her shame comes not from this source only, but also from her covetousness.
26:187
Having therefore taken the thing acknowledged to be shameful, and having said, But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, he then lays down his own conclusion, saying, Let her be covered.
26:188
And he did not say, 'Let her grow her hair long,' but 'Let her be covered,' laying it down as law that these two things are one, and establishing this from both directions—both from what is customary and from what is contrary to it.
26:189
因為他說,那遮蓋與那長髮乃是同一回事;
For he says that the covering and the long hair are one and the same thing;
26:190
and again, that the woman with shaven head and the woman whose head is bare are the same thing.
26:191
'For she is one and the same,' he says, 'as the woman who is shaven.'
26:192
But if someone should say, 'How then are they one, seeing that the one has the covering which nature gives, while the other, the shaven woman, has not even this?'—we shall answer that, by her own choice, she too has cast that covering away by keeping her head bare.
26:193
But if she is not bare of hair, that belongs to nature, not to her own doing.
26:194
So then, the shaven woman has her head bare, and this other woman likewise.
26:195
For this reason he entrusted it to nature to cover her, so that, learning this even from nature, she might veil herself.
26:196
Then he also sets down a reason—as I have often said—conversing with them as with free men.
26:197
What then is the reason? 'For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, being the image and glory of God.'
26:198
For it is not merely because he has Christ as his head that he ought not to cover his head, he says, but also because he rules over the woman.
26:199
For the ruler who approaches the king must bear the symbol of his office.
26:200
As therefore none of the rulers would dare to appear without girdle and mantle before him who wears the diadem,
26:201
so neither should you pray to God without the symbols of your rule—which is to be uncovered—lest you dishonor both yourself and Him who has honored you.
26:202
關於女人,也可以說出正相同的話來;
And one might say the very same thing concerning the woman;
26:203
for it is likewise a dishonor to her not to have the symbols of her subjection.
26:204
'But the woman is the glory of the man.'
26:205
So then the rule of the man is according to nature.
26:206
Then, after he has declared this, he sets down yet other arguments and reasons, leading you back to the first creation and speaking thus:
26:207
'For man is not from woman, but woman from man.'
26:208
And if to be from someone is the glory of him from whom one is, much more is it a glory to bear his likeness.
26:209
For indeed the man was not created for the sake of the woman, but the woman for the sake of the man.
26:210
This is a second superiority again—nay rather, a third and a fourth.
26:211
第一,基督是我們的頭,我們卻是女人的頭;
The first, that Christ is our head, but we are the head of the woman;
26:212
第二,我們是神的榮耀,女人卻是我們的榮耀;
the second, that we are the glory of God, but the woman is our glory;
26:213
第三,我們不是由女人而出,她卻是由我們而出;
the third, that we are not from the woman, but she from us;
26:214
the fourth, that we are not for her sake, but she for ours.
26:215
'For this cause ought the woman to have authority upon her head.'
26:216
'For this cause'—what cause, tell me?
26:217
For all these reasons that have been mentioned, he says; nay rather, not for these alone, but also 'because of the angels.'
26:218
'You despise your husband,' he says; 'stand in awe of the angels.'
26:219
如此說來,蒙頭乃是順服與服權柄的記號;
So then, to be covered is a mark of subjection and of authority;
26:220
for it prepares one to look downward, and to be reverent, and to preserve one's proper virtue.
26:221
For the virtue and honor of one who is ruled is to remain in obedience.
26:222
至於男人,卻不被強制行這事;
For the man is not compelled to do this;
26:223
for he is the image of his Master.
26:224
Consider therefore the excess of the transgression, when, having been honored with such great authority, you disgrace yourself by usurping the guise of the woman.
26:225
And you do the very same thing as if, having received a diadem, you should cast the diadem from your head, and instead of the diadem put on a slave's garment.
26:226
'Nevertheless, neither is man without woman, nor woman without man, in the Lord.'
26:227
For since he had given great superiority to the man, saying that the woman is from him, and that she is for his sake and under him—
26:228
in order that he might neither exalt the men more than was fitting, nor abase the women, see how he brings in the correction, saying:
26:229
'Nevertheless, neither is man without woman, nor woman without man, in the Lord.'
26:230
'Do not, I pray,' he says, 'examine only the first things, nor that original creation;'
26:231
因為你若查究後來的情形,就見彼此互為根源——不,就連這樣說也不確,並非彼此互為根源,乃是神為萬有的根源;
for if you inquire into what came afterward, each is the cause of the other—nay rather, not even so is each the cause of the other, but God is the cause of all;
26:232
wherefore he says, 'Neither is man without woman, nor woman without man, in the Lord.'
26:233
'For as the woman is from the man, so also is the man through the woman.'
26:234
「由女人」而出,但反過來又是「由男人」而出;
'From the woman,' but again, 'from the man;'
26:235
for this very thing still remains intact with the man.
26:236
然而這些美善之事並不是出於男人,乃是出於神;
But these good deeds are not of the man, but of God;
26:237
wherefore he added, 'But all things are from God.'
26:238
If therefore all things are from God, and He commands these things, obey and do not contradict.
26:239
「你們自己審察:女人不蒙著頭向神禱告,是合宜的嗎?」他又立他們作所言之事的審判官,正如他在祭偶像之物一事上所行的一樣;
'Judge in yourselves: is it fitting that a woman pray to God unveiled?' Again he sets them as judges of what is said, just as he did in the matter of things offered to idols;
26:240
for there too he says, 'Judge you what I say;'
26:241
and here, 'Judge in yourselves;'
26:242
而且他在這裡還隱約指出某件更可畏的事;
and he here hints at something yet more fearful;
26:243
for here he says that the insult passes over to God.
26:244
But he does not say so plainly, but rather more gently and somewhat more enigmatically, saying:
26:245
「女人不蒙著頭向神禱告,是合宜的嗎?連本性豈不也教訓你們,男人若留長髮,於他便是羞辱;
'Is it fitting that a woman pray to God unveiled? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair, it is a dishonor to him;
26:246
but if a woman wears long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her instead of a covering.'
26:247
他素常所行的——就是引用出於眾人共知的論據——他在這裡也照樣施行,訴諸於通行的習慣,並且大大羞辱那些人:他們竟指望從他去領受那本可從通行習慣中就學會的事;
What he always does—laying down arguments drawn from common experience—this he works out here too, taking refuge in common custom, and utterly shaming those who waited to learn from him the very things which it was possible to learn even from common custom;
26:248
for such things are not unknown even to barbarians.
26:249
And observe how everywhere he uses striking, forceful expressions.
26:250
'Every man praying, having his head covered, dishonors his head;'
26:251
and again, 'But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered;'
26:252
and here again, 'If a man wears long hair, it is a dishonor to him;'
26:253
'but if a woman wears long hair, it is a glory to her, because her hair is given to her instead of a covering.'
26:254
'And if it is given instead of a covering,' he says, 'for what reason must she add another covering?'—so that she may confess her subjection not from nature only, but also from her own choice.
26:255
For that you must be covered, nature also, taking the lead, has already ordained by law.
26:256
所以你也當加上你自己這一分,免得你顯出連本性的律法也要傾覆;
Add therefore also what comes from yourself, lest you seem even to overturn the laws of nature;
26:257
which is a mark of great effrontery—to wrestle not only against us, but even against nature.
26:258
Wherefore also God, reproaching the Jews, said, 'You have slain your sons and your daughters;'
26:259
'this over and above all your abominations.'
26:260
And Paul again, rebuking those among the Romans who behaved licentiously, thus heightens the accusation, saying that their practice was contrary not only to the law of God, but even to nature itself.
26:261
'For they exchanged the natural use for that which is against nature.'
26:262
For this reason also he here rehearses this argument, showing both this very thing, and that he is enacting nothing strange, and that among the Greeks all the innovations of that which is against nature had their origin.
26:263
So Christ also, showing this, said:
26:264
'Whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you also to them;'
26:265
making it plain that He introduces nothing new.
26:266
'to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the Churches of God.'
26:267
由此可見,抵擋這些事乃是出於好爭辯,而非出於理性;
So then, to oppose these things belongs to contentiousness, and not to reasoning;
26:268
yet even so he made the rebuke measured, instilling the greater sense of shame, which indeed made his word the weightier.
26:269
'For we,' he says, 'have no such custom,' as to be contentious and to wrangle and to set ourselves in opposition.
26:270
And he did not even stop at this, but also added, 'Neither the Churches of God;'
26:271
showing that they set themselves against and oppose the whole world, in not yielding.
26:272
然而,即使哥林多人當時好爭辯,如今全世界卻已經領受並遵守了這條律例;
But even if the Corinthians were contentious at that time, now the whole world has both accepted this law and kept it;
26:273
so great is the power of Him who was crucified.
26:274
But I fear lest, having accepted the outward form, some of the women be found in their deeds shameless, and in another way unveiled.
26:275
For this reason also, when writing to Timothy, Paul was not content with these things, but added others, saying:
26:276
'that they adorn themselves in modest apparel, with reverence and sobriety, not with braided hair or gold.'
26:277
For if she ought not to have her head bare, but everywhere to carry about the symbol of subjection, much more must she display this through her deeds.
26:278
Thus at any rate the women of former times both called their husbands lords, and yielded to them the pre-eminence.
26:279
'For those men also,' one says, 'loved their own wives.'
26:280
這我也知道,並非不曉得;
I too know this, and I am not ignorant of it;
26:281
but when we exhort you concerning the things that pertain to you, do not look to what belongs to them.
26:282
For indeed, when we exhort children to obey their parents, saying that it is written, 'Honour your father and your mother,' they say to us, 'Say also what follows, that You, the parents, provoke not your children;'
26:283
and to the servants, when we say that it is written to obey their masters, and not to serve with eye-service, they too in turn demand of us what follows, bidding us give the same exhortation to the masters also.
26:284
'For indeed to those also,' he says, 'Paul commanded to forbear threatening.'
26:285
但我們不可如此行,也不可在自己被追究本分時,反去尋求那吩咐給別人的事;
But let us not act thus, nor seek the things enjoined upon others when we are called to account for our own;
26:286
因為你若在被控之事上拉個同夥,這對你毫無益處;
for neither, if you take a partner in your charges, will this profit you at all;
26:287
but look to this one thing only, how you may strip off the charges against yourself.
26:288
Since Adam too laid the blame upon the woman, and she again upon the serpent, but this delivered them in nothing.
26:289
Do not you either, then, say this to me now, but be earnest to render with all gratefulness the things which you owe to your husband.
26:290
Since indeed, when I discourse to your husband, counselling him to love and to cherish you, I do not allow him to bring forward into the midst the law laid down for the wife, but I require of him the one written for himself.
26:291
And you, therefore, busy yourself with those things only which pertain to you, and render yourself tractable to him who dwells with you.
26:292
For indeed, if for God's sake you obey your husband, do not allege to me the things that ought to be done by him, but accomplish with exactness those things for which the Lawgiver has made you accountable.
26:293
For this is especially to obey God, even while suffering the contrary, not to transgress the law.
26:294
正因如此,那愛他之人的,愛他,似乎算不得什麼大事;
For this cause he who loves the one that loves him seems to do nothing great;
26:295
but he who cherishes the one that hates him, this man especially is he who is crowned.
26:296
你也當照樣思想:你若忍耐一個難相處的丈夫,就必得著榮耀的冠冕;
In the very same way do you also reckon, that if you bear with a husband who is burdensome, you will receive a splendid crown;
26:297
but if he be gentle and mild, for what will God give you a reward? And I say these things, not bidding the husbands be overbearing, but persuading the wives to bear even with overbearing husbands.
26:298
因為各人若都熱心成全自己的本分,鄰舍的本分也必迅速隨之而來;
For when each is eager to fulfil his own part, quickly the things of his neighbour also will follow;
26:299
as, for example, when the wife is prepared to bear even a harsh husband, and the husband does not insult her even when she is provoked, then all is calm, and a harbour freed from waves.
26:300
古人的情形也是如此;
Thus also it was in the case of the men of old;
26:301
each fulfilled his own part, and did not demand the things of his neighbour.
26:302
亞伯拉罕帶著他兄弟的兒子;
Abraham took his brother's son;
26:303
他吩咐她要走一段遙遠的路程;
he commanded her to journey a far road;
26:304
she did not gainsay even in this, but followed.
26:305
Again, after those many hardships and toils and sweats, having become lord of all,
26:306
卻把首位讓給了羅得;
he yielded the pre-eminence to Lot;
26:307
and not only did Sarah not take this ill, but she did not even part her lips, nor utter any such thing as many of the women now utter, when they see their own husbands worsted in such allotments, and especially by inferiors, reproaching them and calling them fools and senseless and unmanly and traitors and sluggards.
26:308
But she said no such thing, nor thought it, but was content with all that was done by him.
26:309
for after that man had become lord of the choice and had cast the lesser portion to his kinsman, a grievous peril overtook him.
26:310
那族長聽見了,就武裝自己所有的人,單靠自己的家丁,預備迎戰波斯人的全營;
And the patriarch, having heard of it, armed all his own men, and made ready against the whole camp of the Persians with his household servants alone;
26:311
就是在那時她也沒有攔阻他,也沒有說出那本是常情的話;
and not even then did she restrain him, nor say what would have been natural;
26:312
'Man, whither are you carried, thrusting yourself down precipices and giving yourself over to so many dangers, pouring out your blood for a man who has insulted you and seized all that is yours? For even if you despise yourself, yet have pity on me, who forsook home and fatherland and friends and kindred and followed you in so long a wandering, and do not encompass me with widowhood and the evils of widowhood.'
26:313
None of these things did she say, nor think, but bore all in silence.
26:314
此後,當她的腹中仍不能生育時,她並不像婦女所常有的那樣傷痛,也不為自己哀哭;
After these things, while her womb remained barren, she does not suffer what women suffer, nor bewail herself;
26:315
but he laments, yet not to his wife, but to God.
26:316
And see how each preserves what is fitting.
26:317
因為他自己既不因撒拉不生育而輕看她,也不用這類話責備她;
For neither did he himself despise Sarah as childless, nor reproach her with any such thing;
26:318
她也照樣殷勤,要藉著使女,為丈夫的無兒之苦想出些安慰來;
and she again was earnest to devise for him some consolation for the childlessness by means of the handmaid;
26:319
for these things were not yet forbidden at that time, as they are now.
26:320
因為如今無論妻子知道或不知道,作妻子的都不可將這樣的事讓與丈夫,作丈夫的也不可從事這樣的結合,縱使無兒之苦攪擾他們千萬次也是不可;
For now it is not lawful for wives to grant such things to husbands, nor for those men, whether the wives know or are ignorant, to attempt such unions, even if the grief of childlessness trouble them ten thousand times over;
26:321
since they too shall hear that 'Their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched.'
26:322
因為如今是不許可的,但那時卻沒有被禁止;
For it is not permitted now, but at that time it was not forbidden;
26:323
wherefore also the wife enjoined this, and he obeyed, and not even so for the sake of pleasure.
26:324
'But see,' one says, 'how he again cast her out at the woman's bidding.'
26:325
For indeed this is what I wish to show, that both he obeyed her in all things, and she him.
26:326
只是你不要單顧念這些事,你這說這話的人,也當察看在先所發生的,就是她(夏甲)侮辱了她,向自己的主母誇口自大——對一個自由、體面的婦人來說,還有什麼比這更叫人痛心的呢?所以,作妻子的不可等到丈夫先有了美德,然後才顯出自己的美德來;
Only do not attend to these things alone, but you who say these things, examine also what went before, that she insulted her, that she boasted over her mistress—than which what could be more painful to a free and honourable woman? Let not the wife, then, wait for the husband's virtue, and only then display her own;
26:327
nor again let the husband wait for the wife's good order, and only then act as a philosopher.
26:328
因為這已不算是他自己的功勞了;
For this is no longer any achievement of his own;
26:329
but let each one, as I have said, first contribute what belongs to himself.
26:330
For if, when outsiders strike us on the right cheek, we must offer the other also, much more must one bear with a husband who behaves insolently.
26:331
And I do not say this in order that a wife should be beaten—far from it!
26:332
因為那乃是極大的侮辱,不是對挨打的人,而是對施打的人;
for that is the utmost outrage, not to her who is beaten, but to him who beats her;
26:333
but rather that, if by some circumstance you have been allotted such a mate, O woman, you should not be vexed, but consider the reward laid up for these things and the praise you win in the present life.
26:334
And to you, the husbands, I say this:
26:335
let there be no such fault as to bring you to the necessity of striking your wife.
26:336
And why do I speak of a wife? For a free man to strike even a maidservant and lay hands upon her would be intolerable.
26:337
But if for a man to beat a slave-girl is a great disgrace, much more is it so to raise his right hand against a free woman.
26:338
And this one may see even from those who legislate outside the Church, who no longer compel the woman who has suffered such things to dwell with the man who struck her, as being unworthy of fellowship with her.
26:339
For it is the utmost lawlessness to dishonour, as though she were a bought slave, the partner of your life, who shares with you in the most necessary and highest of concerns.
26:340
Wherefore I would say that such a man—if indeed one ought to call him a man, and not rather a beast—is equal
26:341
to a parricide and a matricide.
26:342
For if we have been commanded to leave both father and mother for her sake—not wronging them, but fulfilling a divine law, and this being so desirable to the very parents that even those who are forsaken both give thanks and accomplish it with much eagerness—
26:343
how is it not the utmost madness to outrage her for whose sake God commanded us to leave even those who begot us? Is this, then, mere madness? But tell me, who shall bear the shame? And what words shall be able to represent it, when wailings and lamentations are borne through the streets, and there is a running to the house of the man who thus behaves disgracefully, both of neighbours and of passers-by, as though some wild beast were ravaging within? Better were it for the earth to open and swallow up the man who commits such drunken outrages, than that he should henceforth be seen in the marketplace.
26:344
'But the wife is insolent,' he says.
26:345
But consider that she is a woman, the weaker vessel, while you are a man.
26:346
For it was for this very reason that you were appointed ruler, and were given the rank of head, that you might bear with the weakness of her who is ruled.
26:347
所以,要使你的治理成為榮耀的;
Make your rule, then, a glorious one;
26:348
and it will be glorious when you do not dishonour her who is ruled.
26:349
正如一位君王越使他所立的官長顯為尊貴,他自己就越顯為威嚴;
And just as a king will appear the more august in proportion as he makes his governor more august,
26:350
但他若羞辱、貶損那尊位的崇高,他自己的榮耀也必被削去不少;
but if he dishonours and puts to shame the greatness of that dignity, he cuts off no small part of his own glory too;
26:351
so also you, if you dishonour her who rules next after you, will damage in no ordinary degree the honour of your own rule.
26:352
所以你當這樣思想,凡事持守自守;並且要一同記念那個夜晚,就是她父親召了你來,好像把一件寄託之物一般,將他的女兒交託給你,又叫她離開一切——離開母親、離開他自己、離開家庭——把她全然的看顧交在你的右手裡;
Reasoning thus, therefore, be sober-minded in all things; and along with these, call to mind that evening on which, having summoned you, the father delivered his daughter to you as a kind of deposit, and, having separated her from all—from her mother, from himself, and from the house—entrusted the whole guardianship of her to your right hand;
26:353
consider that, after God, it is through her that you have children and have become a father, and for this reason too be gentle towards her.
26:354
你豈沒有看見農夫麼?那已經領受了種子的土地,即使有無數的缺陷——如土質貧瘠,或長出惡草,或因地勢所在受過量雨水之害——他們仍用各樣的方法悉心照料。你也當這樣行;
Do you not see the farmers, how they tend with every kind of care the land that has once received the seed, even though it have countless defects—as if it be poor soil, or bring forth noxious weeds, or by reason of excessive rains be injured by the nature of its situation? Do you also the same;
26:355
因為這樣,你就必首先享受果實與寧靜;
for thus you will be the first to enjoy both the fruits and the calm;
26:356
for a wife is a haven, and a most excellent remedy for cheerfulness of soul.
26:357
所以你若使這港灣脫離風浪,你從市場回來時,就必享受極大的安穩;
If, then, you rid this haven of winds and waves, you will enjoy great security when you come up from the marketplace;
26:358
but if you fill it with tumults and confusion, you prepare for yourself a more grievous shipwreck.
26:359
In order, therefore, that this may not happen, let this which I say come to pass:
26:360
whenever something painful befalls the household through her fault, comfort her, and do not aggravate the grief.
26:361
因為縱使你失去了一切,也沒有甚麼比家中同住的妻子對你沒有善意更叫人痛苦的了;
For even if you should lose everything, nothing is more painful than to have a wife dwelling within who is not disposed towards you with goodwill;
26:362
and whatever fault you may name, you will name nothing so grievous as to be at strife with her.
26:363
So that for these reasons also let the love of her be more precious than all things.
26:364
For if we ought to bear one another's burdens, much more those of the wife.
26:365
她若貧窮,你不要譏誚她;
And if she be poor, do not reproach her;
26:366
她若愚昧,你不要踐踏她,倒要好好調教她;
and if she be foolish, do not trample upon her, but rather set her in order;
26:367
for she is a member of yourself, and you have become one flesh.
26:368
'But she is a chatterer, and a drunkard, and irascible.'
26:369
Then one ought to grieve over these things, not to be angry; and to call upon God, and to admonish and counsel her, and to do everything so as to cut out the passion.
26:370
但你若打她,且加重那病症,這病是治不好的;
But if you beat her, and grind down the malady, it is not cured;
26:371
for insolence is dissolved by gentleness, not by another insolence.
26:372
Along with these things, consider also the reward that comes from God.
26:373
因為你雖有權休掉她,卻為了敬畏神而不這樣行,反倒忍耐她這許多缺欠,因懼怕那為此所立、禁止人休妻的律法(無論妻子有甚麼毛病),你就必得著無法言喻的賞賜;
For when, though it is in your power to cast her off, you do not do this on account of the fear of God, but bear with so many defects, dreading the law laid down concerning these matters which forbids the putting away of a wife, whatever malady she may have, you shall receive an unspeakable reward;
26:374
and even before the rewards, you will gain the greatest things: both rendering her more obedient, and yourself becoming more forbearing towards her.
26:375
At any rate, it is told of one of the philosophers outside the Church, who had a wicked wife, a chatterer and a drunkard, that when men asked him why, having such a one, he put up with her, he replied that he might have a training-school and
26:376
操練哲學的學堂與角力場;
a wrestling-ground of philosophy in his own house;
26:377
'For I shall be gentler towards the rest,' he says, 'being disciplined every day by her.'
26:378
Did you cry out loudly? But I now lament greatly, when Greeks prove more philosophical than we—we who have been commanded to imitate angels, or rather, who have been commanded to emulate God Himself in respect of forbearance.
26:379
那麼,據說那哲學家正是為此才沒有休掉他的惡妻;
The philosopher, then, is said not to have cast out his wicked wife for this reason;
26:380
and some even say that it was for this reason that he married her.
26:381
但我,因見許多人心思過於不明理,便勸他們從起初就凡事盡力、殷勤,好娶一個相配、滿有各樣美德的伴侶;
But I, since many men are disposed too irrationally, exhort them from the outset to do everything and to be earnest that they may take a well-fitted mate, full of every virtue;
26:382
but if it should happen that they miss the mark and bring into the house a bride who is neither good nor tolerable, then at least let them emulate this philosopher, and set her in order continually, and prefer none of these things to that.
26:383
Since even a merchant, before he makes with his partner such agreements as are able to secure peace, will not first launch the ship into the deep, nor engage in the rest of his trading.
26:384
Let us, therefore, do everything so as to keep her who is the partner of the business of our life and of this vessel within, with all peace.
26:385
For thus all our other affairs also will be calm, and we shall run through the sea of the present life in security.
26:386
願我們看這事比房屋、奴僕、錢財、田地,甚至比政事本身還要緊;
Let us hold this in higher account than house and slaves and money and lands and the very affairs of state;
26:387
and let it be preferred by us above all things, that she who sits with us in our homes should not be at strife nor at variance with us.
26:388
因為這樣,我們其餘的事也必順流而行,就是在屬靈的事上,我們既同心合意地共負這軛,也必大得便利;
For thus our other affairs also will proceed with the current, and in spiritual matters too we shall have great facility, drawing this yoke together with concord;
26:389
既把一切都整理妥當,我們就必得著那所存留的美物;
and having set all things right, we shall attain the good things that are laid up;
26:390
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
