'Love suffereth long, is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.'
33:2
For since he had declared that, in the absence of this, there is no great profit in faith, or knowledge, or prophecy, or tongues, or gifts, or healings, or a perfect life, or martyrdom, he necessarily proceeds next to sketch her ineffable beauty, adorning her image as it were with certain colours, namely the several parts of virtue, and composing all her members with exactness.
33:3
But do not run past what is said, beloved, but examine each of these things with much diligence, that thou mayest know both the treasure of the thing itself and the art of the painter.
33:4
Consider, then, whence he straightway began, and what he set down first as the cause of all good things.
33:5
這是甚麼呢?就是恆久忍耐;
And what is this? Long-suffering;
33:6
this is the root of all true wisdom.
33:7
'A man that is long-suffering aboundeth in prudence, but he that is faint-hearted is mightily foolish.'
33:8
And comparing it with a city, and that a strong one, he declared it to be safer than that city.
33:9
For it is a weapon invincible, and a tower that cannot be broken, easily beating off all painful things.
33:10
又如一點火星落入深淵,絲毫不能損害那深淵,自己卻輕易地熄滅了;
And just as a spark, falling into the deep, does the deep no harm at all, but is itself easily quenched;
33:11
so whatsoever of unexpected things falls into a long-suffering soul, this indeed is easily made to vanish, but does not trouble the soul.
33:12
因為恆久忍耐實在比萬物都更堅固;
For indeed long-suffering is firmer than all things;
33:13
though you should name armies, though money, though horses, though walls, though weapons, though anything whatsoever, you will name nothing equal to long-suffering.
33:14
因為那被這些東西環繞的人,屢屢被怒氣所勝,就像一個卑劣的少年一樣被弄得顛三倒四,使一切充滿了紛擾與風波;
For he that is compassed about with those things, being oftentimes overcome by wrath, is turned upside down like a worthless stripling, and fills all with tumult and storm;
33:15
但這恆久忍耐的人,卻好像安坐在港灣裡,享受著深沉的平靜;
but this man, as though seated in a harbour, enjoys a deep calm;
33:16
縱使你用損失來圍困他,你也動不了這磐石;縱使你加以凌辱,你也搖不動這高塔;縱使你施以擊打,你也擊不碎這金剛石;
though thou surround him with loss, thou hast not moved the rock; though thou bring insult upon him, thou hast not shaken the tower; though thou inflict blows, thou hast not smitten the adamant;
33:17
他之所以被稱為「恆久忍耐」,正是因為他有一顆寬長而宏大的心靈;
for indeed he is called long-suffering for this reason, because he has a soul that is long and great;
33:18
for that which is long is also called great.
33:19
But this good thing springs from love, providing much benefit both to those who possess it and to those who enjoy its effects.
33:20
For do not tell me of the desperate, who, doing evil and not suffering evil, become worse.
33:21
For here this comes to pass not through the long-suffering of the one, but through those men who do not use it as they ought.
33:22
Do not therefore tell me of these, but of the more reasonable, who gain great things thereby.
33:23
For when, having done evil, they suffer no evil, then, admiring the meekness of the one who suffered, they reap thence a most excellent teaching of true wisdom.
33:24
But he does not even stop at this point, but proceeds to add her other excellences, saying:
33:25
For since there are some who use long-suffering not for their own true wisdom, but for the
33:26
vengeance upon those who have provoked them, tearing themselves asunder, he says that neither does love have this defect.
33:27
Wherefore he also added, 'is kind.'
33:28
因為他們並不用自己的品德去點燃那些已被怒火燒著之人心中的火焰,反而是要使之平息、將之熄滅;
For they do not use their moral character to kindle a flame among those already inflamed by anger, but to soothe and quench it;
33:29
並且他們不僅藉著高尚地忍受,也藉著照料與安慰,來醫治那怒氣的膿瘡,並治好那創傷;
and not only by bearing nobly, but also by tending and comforting, do they heal the sore and cure the wound of wrath;
33:30
For it is possible for one to be both long-suffering and spiteful, and by this that good deed is corrupted.
33:31
But love has escaped even this.
33:32
這就是說,愛不是輕率魯莽的;
That is to say, it is not rash;
33:33
for indeed it makes the one who loves discerning, weighty, and steadfast.
33:34
因為這缺陷是那些以卑劣方式去愛之人所特有的;
For this defect is peculiar to those who love in a shameful manner;
33:35
but he who knows this love is set free from all these things most of all.
33:36
For when there is no wrath within, then all rashness and insolence is done away.
33:37
For indeed, like some most excellent husbandman, love, seated within the soul, permits none of these thorns to spring up.
33:38
For indeed we see many priding themselves greatly upon these very good deeds, as, for instance, that a man is not spiteful, nor wicked, nor faint-hearted, nor rash.
33:39
For neither do these evils attend upon wealth and poverty alone, but also upon those things that are by nature good.
33:40
But love with exactness purges away all these things.
33:41
恆久忍耐的人未必也是有恩慈的;
The long-suffering man is not by all means also kind;
33:42
and if he be not kind, the matter becomes wickedness, and he is in danger of falling into rancour.
33:43
Wherefore this love, having given the remedy—I mean kindness—keeps the virtue pure.
33:44
Again, the kindly man often becomes easygoing to a fault; but this too love sets right.
33:45
For 'Love,' he says, 'vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.'
33:46
仁慈而恆忍的人往往容易誇口;
The kindly and longsuffering man is often given to boasting;
33:47
but this vice too love does away with.
33:48
And observe how it adorns love not only from what it possesses, but also from what it does not possess.
33:49
For it both brings in virtue, he says, and cuts off vice; or rather, it does not even suffer vice to spring up at the outset.
33:50
因為他沒有說「愛雖嫉妒,卻能勝過嫉妒」,也沒有說「愛雖自高,卻能約束這情慾」,而是說「愛是不嫉妒,不自誇,不張狂」;
For he did not say, 'It envies indeed, but gets the better of envy,' nor, 'It is puffed up indeed, but chastens the passion,' but that 'It envies not, vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up';
33:51
which indeed is most wonderful of all, that it achieves what is good even without toil, and sets up its trophy without war and without battle array.
33:52
For it does not permit the one who has it to sweat and so to receive the crown, but bestows the prize on him without labor.
33:53
For where there is no passion to oppose the temperate mind, what toil could there be? It behaveth not itself unseemly.
33:54
For why do I say, he means, that it is not puffed up, when it is so far removed from that passion that even when it suffers the uttermost for the one it loves, it does not so much as reckon the matter a disgrace? He did not say again that 'It is put to shame, but bears the shame nobly,' but that it does not even take any perception of the shame at all.
33:55
For if those who are lovers of money, enduring all the reproachful things involved in petty trading for the sake of that gain, are not only not ashamed but even exult in it, much more will he who has this praiseworthy love decline nothing whatever for the safety of those he loves; and not only will he not decline it, but he will not even be ashamed while suffering.
33:56
But that we may not draw our example from an evil thing, let us examine this very point in the case of Christ, and then we shall see the power of what has been said.
33:57
因為我們的主耶穌基督既被那些可憐的奴僕吐唾沫,又被他們掌摑;
For our Lord Jesus the Christ was both spat upon and buffeted by wretched slaves;
33:58
祂不但不以此為羞恥,反而歡欣,並稱這事為祂的榮耀;
and not only did He not think it a disgrace, but He even exulted, and called the thing His glory;
33:59
祂還帶著一個強盜與殺人犯,在眾人之先與自己一同進入樂園,又與一個妓女交談;儘管周圍所有的人都在指責,祂卻不以這事為羞恥,反而任憑她親吻自己的雙腳,以眼淚沾濕祂的身體,並用頭髮擦乾;
and bringing a robber and murderer into paradise with Himself before all others, and conversing with a harlot, and that while all the bystanders were finding fault, He did not think the thing shameful, but even allowed her to kiss His own feet, and to bathe His body with her tears, and to wipe them with her hair;
33:60
and this in the very midst of a theatre of His enemies and foes.
33:61
For love behaveth not itself unseemly.
33:62
為此緣故,作父親的,即便比眾人更有學問、更善辭令,也不以與自己的幼兒牙牙學語為恥;
For this reason fathers too, even though they be more philosophical and more eloquent than all men, are not ashamed to lisp along with their little children;
33:63
and none of those who see it finds fault, but the thing seems so good that they even applaud it.
33:64
And should the children in turn become wicked, these fathers still remain, correcting them, caring for them, drawing a veil over their reproaches, and are not ashamed.
33:65
For love behaveth not itself unseemly, but as with certain golden wings it covers over all the sins of those who are loved.
33:66
Thus too did Jonathan love David, and when he heard his father saying, 'Son of maidens who have deserted, reared as a woman,' he was not ashamed, although indeed the words are full of much reproach.
33:67
For what he means is this:
33:68
'Son of little harlots raving mad after men, running out to those who pass by; you unnerved and soft one, having nothing of a man about you, but living to the shame of yourself and of the mother who bore you.'
33:69
那又怎樣呢?他因這些話就憂傷、蒙羞掩面、離棄所愛的人嗎?恰恰相反,他反倒以這份情誼為榮;
What then? Did he grieve at these things, and hide his face, and forsake the one he loved? On the very contrary, he even gloried in the affection;
33:70
and this though at that time the one was a king, and Jonathan a king's son, while David was a fugitive and a wanderer.
33:71
然而即便如此,他也不以自己與大衛的友情為恥;
But not even so was he ashamed of his friendship;
33:72
for love behaveth not itself unseemly.
33:73
For this indeed is the wonderful thing about it, that it not only does not suffer the one who is insulted to grieve or be stung, but even makes him rejoice.
33:74
For this very reason that man too, after all these things, as though wreathed with a crown, thus went off and threw himself upon David's neck.
33:75
因為愛根本不曉得羞恥究竟是甚麼;
For love does not so much as know what shame ever is;
33:76
and for this reason it even takes pride in those things at which another hides his face.
33:77
For the shame is not to know how to love, but not that one who loves should risk danger and endure all things for those he loves.
33:78
But when I say 'all things,' do not think that I mean even things hurtful, as if one should say to assist a young man toward a mistress, or if one should deem it right to accomplish some other harmful thing.
33:79
And this I showed you the other day from the case of the Egyptian woman.
33:80
因為惟有那尋求所愛之人益處的,才是真正愛人的;
For that man alone is the one who loves, who seeks the things that are profitable for the one he loves;
33:81
so that if anyone does not pursue this good, even though he should say ten thousand times that he loves, he is more hostile than all enemies.
33:82
利百加也曾如此,因她極其疼愛自己的兒子,便設下計謀,既不因怕被察覺而羞愧,也不懼怕;
Thus too Rebecca once, since she was exceedingly attached to her son, both wrought a deception and was not ashamed lest she be caught, nor was she afraid;
33:83
而其中的危險實在非同小可;
and indeed the danger was no ordinary one;
33:84
but even when her son argued precisely with her, she said, 'Upon me be thy curse, my child.'
33:85
Do you see, even in a woman, an apostolic soul? For just as Paul chose (if one may compare a small thing to a great) to become accursed for the Jews' sake, so she too, that her son might be blessed, chose even to be cursed.
33:86
她把那些福分讓給了他;
And to him she yielded the good things;
33:87
因為她自己當然不會與他一同蒙福;
for she was not, of course, going to be blessed along with him;
33:88
反倒把那些禍患預備獨自一人擔當;
but the evil things she prepared to endure by herself alone;
33:89
yet nevertheless she rejoiced and hastened, and this though so great a danger lay before her, and she was vexed at any delay of the matter.
33:90
For she feared lest Esau, forestalling her, might make her wisdom of no effect.
33:91
Wherefore she both cuts short her words and urges on the youth, and forbearing to make any reply to what he had said, she utters a reasoning sufficient to persuade him.
33:92
For she did not say, 'You speak these things in vain and fear without cause, since your father has grown old and is deprived of the keenness of his perception,' but what? 'Upon me be thy curse, my child;'
33:93
only do not you spoil the drama, nor lose the prey, nor betray the treasure.
33:94
And this same Jacob—did he not serve his kinsman twice seven years? Did he not, along with his servitude, incur ridicule for that deception? What then? Did he perceive the ridicule? Did he think it a disgrace that, being free and of free parents and nobly reared, he underwent the lot of slaves among his own kindred?—which is wont to sting most of all, when one suffers reproachful things among his acquaintances.
33:95
But the cause was love, which made even the long time appear short.
33:96
'For they were,' it says, 'in his eyes as but a few days.'
33:97
So far was he from being stung or blushing at this servitude.
33:98
因此那有福的保羅說得好:「愛是不作害羞的事;
With good reason therefore did the blessed Paul say, 'Love behaveth not itself unseemly;
33:99
seeketh not its own, is not provoked.'
33:100
For having said that 'It behaveth not itself unseemly,' he shows also the manner by which it behaves not itself unseemly.
33:101
And what is the manner? That 'It seeketh not its own.'
33:102
For it reckons the one it loves to be everything, and it is then put to shame, when it is not able to deliver him.
33:103
因此,若能藉著自己所受的羞辱使所愛的人得益處,愛甚至不把這事看作羞辱;
So that if it be possible through its own unseemliness to benefit the one it loves, it does not even reckon the thing to be unseemliness;
33:104
for that other one is henceforth its very self.
33:105
因為友愛正是如此:愛人者與所愛者不再是分開的兩個,乃是合為一個人;
For this is friendship: that the one who loves and the one who is loved should no longer be two divided, but one single man;
33:106
which comes about from no other source than from love.
33:107
Seek not therefore your own, that you may find your own.
33:108
For he who seeks his own does not find his own.
33:109
Wherefore Paul also said, 'Let no man seek his own, but each the things of his neighbor.'
33:110
For one's own advantage lies in the advantage of one's neighbor, and his in this.
33:111
所以,就如有人把自己的金子埋在鄰舍的屋裏,若他不肯前去那裏尋找挖掘,就永遠看不見它;
As therefore, if someone had his own gold buried in his neighbor's house, if he should refuse to go there and seek and dig it up, he will never behold it;
33:112
so also here, he who is unwilling to seek his own advantage even in the benefit of his neighbor, will not attain the crowns that are given for this.
33:113
For God, for this very reason, so laid it up, that we might be bound together with one another.
33:114
正如有人叫醒一個昏睡的孩子,要他跟隨哥哥走,當那孩子自己不肯去時,便把他所渴望、所喜愛之物交在哥哥手中,好叫他因想要得著它而追趕那握住它的人;這正是實際所發生的;
And just as a man rousing a drowsy child to follow after his brother, when the child is unwilling to go of his own accord, places in the brother's hands the thing the child longs for and desires, so that by the longing to obtain it he may chase after the one who holds it, which is exactly what happens;
33:115
so also here God has given to each one's neighbour that which is profitable to himself, that from this we might run after one another and not be torn apart from each other.
33:116
And if you will, observe this even in our own case, in us who preach:
33:117
for what is profitable to me lies in you, and what is beneficial to you lies in me.
33:118
For it is profitable to you to be taught the things that are pleasing to God; but this task was entrusted to me, that from me you might receive it, and on this account be compelled to run to me.
33:119
而你變得更好,對我也是有益的;
And it is profitable to me that you should become better;
33:120
因為為此我必得著豐厚的賞賜;
for on account of this I shall receive a great reward;
33:121
but this again lies in you, and on this account I am compelled to pursue you, that you may become better, and that I may receive from you what is profitable to me.
33:122
Therefore Paul also said, 'For what is my hope? Is it not even you?' And again, 'My hope, and my joy, and the crown of my glorying.'
33:123
So then, Paul's joy was his disciples, and they possessed his joy.
33:124
For this reason he also wept, whenever he saw any perishing.
33:125
Again, what was profitable to them lay in Paul:
33:126
'For the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.'
33:127
And again, 'These things I suffer for the sake of the elect, that they may obtain eternal life.'
33:128
One might see this also in the affairs of everyday life:
33:129
'For the wife,' he says, 'has not authority over her own body, nor does the husband, but the wife has authority over the husband's, and the husband over the wife's.'
33:130
So also we, whenever we wish to bind certain persons together, do this:
33:131
we leave no one master of himself, but by stretching a chain between them we contrive that this one be held fast by that one, and that one by this.
33:132
Would you see this also in the case of rulers? He who judges does not sit passing sentence for himself, but seeking the profit of his neighbours.
33:133
The ruled, in turn, seek what is profitable to the ruler, through service, through ministry, through all the rest.
33:134
兵丁為我們拿起兵器;
The soldiers take up arms on our behalf;
33:135
因為他們為我們的緣故冒險;
for on our account they face danger;
33:136
而我們為他們的緣故勞苦;
we, on their behalf, endure hardship;
33:137
for from us comes their sustenance.
33:138
But if you say that each one does this while seeking his own advantage, this too I affirm; yet the point is that one's own good is found through another's.
33:139
因為兵丁若不為那供養他的人爭戰,就無人為此供給他;
For the soldier, if he does not fight on behalf of those who feed him, has no one to minister to him for this;
33:140
and this same man in turn, if he does not feed the soldier, has no one to shield him.
33:141
Have you seen love everywhere extended and ordering all things? But do not grow weary, until you have learned this whole golden chain in its entirety.
33:142
For having said, 'It seeks not its own,' he goes on to state the good things that are born of this.
33:143
And what are these? 'It is not provoked, it thinks no evil.'
33:144
See again how it not only masters wickedness, but does not even permit it to arise in the first place.
33:145
因為他沒有說「愛雖被激怒,卻能得勝」,乃是說「愛連激怒也沒有」;
For he did not say, 'It is provoked, yet prevails,' but 'It is not even provoked;'
33:146
and he did not say, 'It does not work evil,' but 'It does not even reckon it.'
33:147
For not only does it contrive nothing wicked, but it does not even suspect any evil against the one beloved.
33:148
How could she be provoked who does not even endure to admit a wicked suspicion? Whence springs the fountain of affection.
33:149
這就是說,愛「不喜歡遭遇不幸的人」;
That is to say, 'It does not rejoice over those who suffer ill;'
33:150
and not only this, but what is far greater, 'It rejoices together with the truth.'
33:151
他說:「愛與那些有美好名聲的人一同喜樂」;
'It takes delight,' he says, 'with those who are of good repute;'
33:152
'to rejoice with those who rejoice, and to weep with those who weep.'
33:153
由此,愛就不嫉妒,由此,愛就不自誇;
Hence it does not envy, hence it is not puffed up;
33:154
for indeed it deems the good things of others its own.
33:155
你看見了愛如何漸漸使她所養育的人成為天使嗎?因為當一個人不動怒、無嫉妒之污穢、脫離一切轄制人的情慾時,你要想到他如今甚至已脫離了人的本性,遷入了天使那樣的無情慾之境。然而愛仍不以這些為滿足,還有比這些更大的可說;
Have you seen how little by little love makes an angel of the one whom she nurtures? For when a man is free from anger, and pure from envy, and delivered from every tyrannical passion, consider that he has now been released even from human nature, and has been transferred to that very impassibility of the angels. And yet love is not content with these things, but has something still greater than these to declare;
33:156
for it sets down the stronger points last.
33:157
It comes from long-suffering, from kindness — even if the things be burdensome, even if grievous, even if insults, even if blows, even if death, even if anything whatsoever.
33:158
And this again it is possible to discern from the blessed David.
33:159
還有什麼比看見兒子起來悖逆、貪圖王位、渴望流父親的血更沉重呢?然而那有福的人連這事也擔當了,甚至如此仍不肯發出一句苦毒的話攻擊那弒父之子,反倒把其餘一切都交給他的將領,只切切囑咐他們要保全那兒子的性命;
For what is more burdensome than to see a son rising up in rebellion and coveting tyranny and thirsting for his father's blood? Yet that blessed man bore even this, and not even so could he endure to utter a bitter word against the parricide, but leaving to his generals all the rest, he charged them earnestly concerning that son's safety;
33:160
for strong was the foundation of his love.
33:161
愛的能力他從此暗示出來,愛的良善則藉著接下來的話顯明;
And its power he hints at from this, but its goodness through what follows;
33:162
'For it hopes all things,' he says, 'believes all things, endures all things.'
33:163
What is 'it hopes all things'? 'It hopes all good things,' he says; it does not despair of the one loved, but even if he be worthless, it remains with him, correcting, providing, taking care.
33:164
他說:「愛不僅盼望,也相信」,這是出於它極深的愛;
'For it does not simply hope,' he says, 'but also believes,' out of its intense love;
33:165
and even if these good things do not turn out according to its hope, but that man be yet more burdensome, it bears even these.
33:166
'For it endures all things,' he says.
33:167
'Love never fails.'
33:168
你看見了他把那頂點的冠冕放在何處,以及這恩賜最為卓越的標記是什麼嗎?「愛是永不止息」是什麼意思呢?就是愛不被割斷,不因擔當忍受而消解;
Have you seen at what point he placed the crowning summit, and what is above all the distinctive mark of this gift? For what is 'It does not fail'? It is not cut off, it is not dissolved by bearing;
33:169
因為愛人的,無論遭遇何事,總不能轉為恨;
for he who loves can never come to hate, whatever may happen;
33:170
for this is love's greatest good.
33:171
Wherefore he also said, 'If by any means I might provoke to jealousy them that are my flesh,' and he continued in hope.
33:172
And he exhorted Timothy, saying:
33:173
'The servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle toward all men, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves, if perhaps God may give them knowledge of the truth.'
33:174
'What then,' one says, 'if they be enemies and pagans, ought one not to hate them?' Hate indeed, yet not them, but their doctrine; not the man, but the wicked deed, the corrupted purpose.
33:175
For the man is the work of God, but the error is the work of the devil.
33:176
所以你不可把神的事與魔鬼的事混雜在一起;
Do not, then, mix together the things of God and the things of the devil;
33:177
因為猶太人也曾是褻瀆的、逼迫的、侮慢的,並且說了無數攻擊基督的惡言;
since the Jews too were both blasphemers and persecutors and insolent men, and spoke countless evils against Christ;
33:178
那麼,保羅——那在眾人中最愛基督的——就恨惡他們嗎?斷然不是,他反倒愛他們,並為他們的緣故做了一切;
Did Paul then hate them, he who of all men loved Christ the most? By no means, but he even loved them, and did all things on their behalf;
33:179
他一面說:「我心裡所願的,並向神所求的,是要他們得救」;
and now he says, 'My good will indeed and my prayer to God on their behalf is for their salvation;'
33:180
and again, 'I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for their sake.'
33:181
So also Ezekiel, seeing them being slaughtered, said, 'Alas, O Lord, wilt thou blot out the remnant of Israel?' And Moses, 'If thou wilt forgive them their sin, forgive.'
33:182
What then does David say? 'Those that hate thee, O Lord, have I hated, and over thine enemies have I pined away;'
33:183
'with perfect hatred did I hate them.'
33:184
其實,詩篇中所說的一切,並非都是大衛以自己的身分說的;
In truth, not all the things said in the Psalms were spoken by David in his own person;
33:185
因為連他自己也說:「我寄居在基達的帳棚中」;
for this same one says, 'I have dwelt among the tents of Kedar';
33:186
又說:「我們曾在巴比倫的河邊坐下,一追想錫安就哭了」;
and, 'By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept';
33:187
yet he neither saw Babylon nor the tents of Kedar.
33:188
But apart from this, more strictness of the higher philosophy is now demanded of us.
33:189
Wherefore also, when the disciples desired that fire should be brought down, as in the case of Elijah, Christ said, 'You do not know of what spirit you are.'
33:190
因為在那時候,他們不但奉命恨惡不敬虔的事,也奉命恨惡那些不敬虔的人本身,免得友誼成為他們犯罪違法的機會;
For at that time they were commanded to hate not only impiety, but the impious men themselves, lest friendship should become for them an occasion of transgression;
33:191
為此緣故,祂斷絕了親屬的關係與往來交錯,並且從各方面把他們隔離開來;
for this reason He cut off kinships and intermixings, and walled them off on every side;
33:192
but now, since He has led us to a greater philosophy, and made us higher than that harm, He also commands us both to receive and to exhort them.
33:193
For no harm comes to us from them, but benefit comes to them from us.
33:194
What then does he say? We must not hate, but have mercy.
33:195
For if you hate, how will you easily turn back the one who is straying? How will you pray for the unbeliever? That one ought indeed to pray, hear what Paul says:
33:196
'I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men.'
33:197
And that not all at that time were believers, is surely evident to everyone.
33:198
And again, 'For kings, and for all who are in high position.'
33:199
And that these were impious and lawless, this too is likewise evident.
33:200
Then, stating also the cause of the prayer, he adds:
33:201
'For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who wills that all men should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.'
33:202
為此緣故,即使有一位外邦(希臘)婦人與一位信主的人同住,他也不拆散這婚姻;
For this reason, even if he finds a Greek (heathen) woman dwelling together with a believer, he does not sever the marriage;
33:203
然而還有甚麼比妻子與丈夫更親密的呢?他說:「二人要成為一體」;
and yet what is more intimate to a man than a woman? 'For the two,' he says, 'shall be one flesh';
33:204
and there the endearment is great and the desire is warm.
33:205
但我們若要恨惡那不敬虔和犯法的人,照這樣下去,我們也將恨惡罪人,如此順著這條路前行,你就要與大多數弟兄,甚或與所有的弟兄斷絕;
But if we are going to hate the impious and lawbreakers, as we go on we shall also hate sinners, and thus, advancing along this road, you will be torn away even from most of the brethren, or rather from all;
33:206
for there is not, there is not, anyone without sin.
33:207
因為我們若必須恨惡神的仇敵,那我們就不但要恨惡不敬虔的人,也要恨惡罪人;
For if we must hate the enemies of God, we ought to hate not only the impious, but sinners also;
33:208
and thus we shall be worse than wild beasts, turning away from everyone and puffed up with madness, just like that Pharisee.
33:209
But Paul did not command thus; rather how? 'Admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient toward all.'
33:210
What then does he mean when he says, 'If anyone does not obey our word by this epistle, mark that man, and do not associate with him'? This was said chiefly concerning brethren, yet not even this simply, but this too with gentleness.
33:211
For do not cut off what follows, but add also the words that come after these.
33:212
For having said, 'Do not associate with him,' he added, 'And do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.'
33:213
Do you see how he commanded to hate the evil deed, not the man? For it is the work of the devil to tear us away from one another, and he is exceedingly eager to destroy love, that he may cut off the road to correction, and keep the one man in error and you in enmity, and so wall off the road to that man's salvation.
33:214
For when the physician also hates the sick man and flees from him, and the sick man turns away from the physician, when will the ailing man ever recover, if neither the one calls him to himself, nor the other goes to him? And for what cause, tell me, do you turn away from and flee him? Because he is impious? Then for this very reason you ought to receive and to tend him, that you may raise up the ailing one.
33:215
但即使他的病是不治之症,你仍舊奉命要盡你自己的本分;
But if his disease is incurable, still you were commanded to do your own part;
33:216
since Judas too was incurably diseased, and yet God did not cease from tending him.
33:217
Therefore neither must you grow weary.
33:218
For even if, after much effort, you do not deliver him from impiety, nevertheless you will receive the reward as though you had delivered him, and you will make him marvel at your gentleness, and thus all this glory will pass over to God.
33:219
For even if you work miracles, even if you raise the dead, even if you do anything whatever, the Greeks will never marvel at you so much as when they see you exhibiting a meek and gentle and sweet disposition.
33:220
而這也不是甚麼小的成就;
And this is no small achievement;
33:221
for many will be completely delivered from their evil.
33:222
For nothing is able to draw men so much as love.
33:223
因為為了那些事,就是我所說的神蹟奇事,他們甚至會嫉妒你;但為了這一件事,他們卻要既驚歎又愛你;
For on account of those things, I mean the signs and wonders, they will even envy you; but on account of this they will both marvel and love you;
33:224
and loving you, they will lay hold of the truth as they advance along the road.
33:225
但他若不立刻成為信徒,你不要驚異,也不要催逼,更不要一下子就求全部;
But if he does not immediately become a believer, do not marvel, nor press him, nor seek all things at once;
33:226
rather, let him for the time praise and love, and by advancing along the road he will come to this also.
33:227
And that you may learn clearly how great this is, hear how Paul too, when coming before an unbelieving judge, made his defense.
33:228
'For I count myself blessed,' he says, 'that I am about to be judged before you.'
33:229
But he said these things not flattering him — far from it — but wishing through his gentleness to gain him.
33:230
And in part he did gain him, and the one who was for the time reckoned to be a condemned prisoner took the judge captive; and the very one who had been overcome confesses the victory with a clear voice in the presence of all, saying, 'In a little you persuade me to become a Christian.'
33:231
What then did Paul do? He spreads out his net still further, and says:
33:232
'I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except these bonds.'
33:233
保羅啊,你在說甚麼呢?「只是不要有這些鎖鏈」?倘若你以這些為羞恥而躲避它們,而且是在這麼多的人面前,那麼你此後還有甚麼可誇的膽量呢?你不是在你所有的書信中,處處為這件事誇口,稱自己為囚犯,並且處處把這鎖鏈當作冠冕在我們面前佩帶麼?那麼如今發生了甚麼事,叫你竟推辭這鎖鏈呢?他說:「我自己並不推辭它們,也不以之為恥,乃是俯就他們的軟弱;
What are you saying, O Paul? 'Except these bonds'? And what boldness of speech is left to you henceforth, if you are ashamed of these things and flee from them, and that too before so great a people? Do you not everywhere in your epistles boast in this very matter, and call yourself a prisoner, and everywhere carry about this chain for us in place of a diadem? What then has now happened, that you deprecate the bonds? 'I do not myself deprecate them,' he says, 'nor am I ashamed, but I condescend to their weakness;
33:234
for they are not yet able to receive my boast.'
33:235
And I have learned from my Lord not to put a piece of unshrunk cloth upon an old garment.
33:236
For as yet they are prejudiced against our teaching, and are disposed with hostility toward the cross.
33:237
If therefore I should add the bonds as well, the hatred becomes greater.
33:238
For this reason I put these things away, that that (message) might become readily acceptable.
33:239
For being bound seems to them for the present to be a reproach, since they have not yet tasted the glory that is among us.
33:240
It is necessary therefore to condescend.
33:241
For when they have learned to practice the higher philosophy, then they will know also the beauty of this iron, and the splendor that comes from the bonds.
33:242
無論如何,當他向別人講論時,他甚至稱這事為恩典,說:「因為你們蒙恩,不但得以信服基督,並要為祂受苦」;
At any rate, when discoursing to others, he even calls the matter a grace, saying that 'It has been given to us by God not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake';
33:243
but for the present it was a welcome thing that those who heard should not be ashamed of the cross.
33:244
因為沒有人領人進入王宮時,會在他還站在外面尚未看見那外面的門樓之前,就強迫他去察看裡面的東西;
For neither does anyone, when leading someone into a palace, before he has beheld the outer gateways as he stands without, compel him to survey the things within;
33:245
for thus not even will they appear wonderful, unless one, having got within, learns all things thoroughly.
33:246
So then let us also approach the children of the Greeks with condescension, with love.
33:247
For this is a great teacher, and able both to lead men away from error, and to reform their manner of life, and to guide them by the hand toward the higher philosophy, and to make men out of stones.
33:248
And if you wish to learn its power, bring me a man who is cowardly and easily frightened by noises and trembling at shadows, and irascible and harsh, and a wild beast rather than a man, and lecherous and licentious, and having every vice, and hand him over into the hands of love, and lead him into this training-ground, and you will quickly see that cowardly and timid man becoming brave and magnanimous and daring all things with ease.
33:249
而最奇妙的是,這些事的發生並非因為他的本性被改變了,乃是愛心在那極膽怯的魂裡,彰顯了她自己的能力;
And the marvelous thing is that these things come to pass not by his nature being changed, but love displays her own power in that very cowardly soul;
33:250
and it comes to the same thing as if one, having made a sword of lead and not of iron, but remaining in the nature of lead, should cause it to accomplish the work of iron.
33:251
Jacob was guileless, dwelling in a house, and unpracticed in toils and dangers, living a certain relaxed and free life, and just as a virgin in her chamber, so also this man, sitting indoors, was for the most part constrained to keep the house, being freed from the market-place and from the tumults that come from the market-place and from all such things, and remaining continually in security and quiet.
33:252
What then? When the torch of love had kindled him, see how it made this guileless man who dwelt in a house into one who was enduring and fond of toil.
33:253
And hear these things not from me, but from the patriarch himself.
33:254
For, bringing a charge against his father-in-law, he says, 'These twenty years have I been with you.'
33:255
And how did those twenty years pass? For he adds this too: 'consumed
33:256
by the heat of the day and by the frost of the night, and sleep departed from my eyes.'
33:257
These are the words of that guileless man, who dwelt in a house and lived a life of ease.
33:258
And that he was also timid is plain from the fact that, when he expected to see Esau, he was half-dead with fear.
33:259
But observe how this same timid man again became, through love, bolder than a lion.
33:260
因為他把自己當作一道屏障,擺在眾人之前,甘願率先承受那個他以為凶暴、口噴殺氣的人,並以自己的身體為婦女們謀求安全;
For, setting himself as a kind of bulwark before all the rest, he was ready to be the first to receive that savage man who, as he supposed, breathed slaughter, and to secure safety for the women by means of his own body;
33:261
and the man whom he had dreaded and shuddered at, he longed to be the first to see in the line of battle.
33:262
For his love for the women was stronger than this fear.
33:263
Have you seen how, being timid, he suddenly became daring, not by changing his disposition, but by being strengthened by love? For that even after this he was still timid is plain from his shifting from place to place.
33:264
But let no one suppose that what has been said is an accusation of the righteous man.
33:265
因為膽怯本身並非罪責;
For to be timid is not a charge against him;
33:266
but to do, out of cowardice, any of the things one ought not to do.
33:267
For it is possible even for one who is timid by nature to become brave through godly reverence.
33:268
And what of Moses? Did he not flee in fear of a single Egyptian, and remove himself into exile? Yet nevertheless this same fugitive, who could not bear the threat of one man, once he had tasted the honey of love, nobly hastened—with none compelling him—to perish together with those he loved.
33:269
他說:『倘或你肯赦免他們的罪,就求你赦免;
For 'if you will forgive their sin,' he says, 'forgive it;
33:270
but if not, blot me also out of your book which you have written.'
33:271
至於愛使凶狠的人變得溫和,使放蕩的人變得貞潔,在此我們甚至不再需要舉例;
And that love makes the insolent gentle, and the licentious chaste, we no longer even need examples here;
33:272
for even if a man be fiercer than any wild beast, he becomes, through loving, tamer than any sheep.
33:273
For what was fiercer and more frenzied than Saul?
33:274
然而當他女兒放走了他的仇敵時,他卻連一句苛刻的話都沒有向她說;
Yet when his daughter set his enemy free, he did not utter even one bitter word to her;
33:275
他曾為大衛的緣故將所有祭司盡都殺戮,卻在看見女兒放這人從家中逃脫時,連一句怒言都不曾向她發出,而且這事還是對他施行了如此大的詭計之後;
and he who had utterly slaughtered all the priests for David's sake, when he saw his daughter had let him escape from the house, was not angry with her even so far as a word, and that though so great a deceit had been contrived against him;
33:276
for he was held in check by the mightier bridle of love.
33:277
正如愛曉得使人溫和,照樣它也曉得使人貞潔;
And just as love knows how to make men gentle, so also it knows how to make them chaste;
33:278
for if a man love his own wife thus, as he ought to love her, then though he be a thousand times licentious, he will not endure to look upon another, because of his longing for her.
33:279
'For love is strong,' it says, 'as death.'
33:280
So that licentiousness comes from nowhere else than from not loving.
33:281
Since then love is the maker of all virtue, let us with all diligence plant it in our own souls, that it may bring us many good things, and that we may continually possess its overflowing fruit, which ever flourishes and never withers.
33:282
因為這樣,我們也必得著那永恆的美福;
For thus we shall also attain unto the eternal good things;
33:283
which may it be that we all attain, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
